Nothing ‘holy’ about the Holy Family

Chinese Refugee Family – Martha Sawyers (1902 – 1988)

These were some of the titles of video clippings that appeared on the YouTube at the end of October. These video clippings have been seen by millions of all over the world. It was about a little boy – given a name ‘Carlos’, in order to protect his anonymity – who wandered on to the stage where Pope Francis was leading an evening prayer service in St Peter’s Square on October 26.
As part of the Year of Faith, the Catholic Church celebrated ‘Family Day’ in the Vatican on October 26 and 27. On Saturday, October 26, when the evening prayer service began, children were sitting around the podium where Pope Francis was seated on his chair. One of those children was Carlos, an orphan boy from Colombia. He went over to Pope Francis and for the next ten minutes or so, he stole the show! The media is still talking about this.

When my friends in India and elsewhere asked me about this incident, I told them that this was just one more of the many incidents which give us a glimpse into the heart of Pope Francis. I told them also that Pope Francis seated on the stage with kids all around him, was like a grandpa conducting an evening family prayer with his grandchildren. Referring to Pope Francis as a grandpa may be surprising (even shocking) to some of you. But I am sure he wouldn’t mind being called that way by one of those kids sitting around him. The tender moments Pope Francis spent with Carlos were the best message of the Family Day celebrated in Vatican. The Italian lady, who has adopted Carlos, said, “When Pope Francis blessed my child, I was sure he was blessing all those children abandoned around the world.” In my opinion, the Feast of the Holy Family was celebrated at St Peter’s Square on October 26.
All of us know that Christmas has a special magic around it. It is surely a time for families to come together. It is quite fitting that the Church has allotted the Sunday after Christmas for the Feast of the Holy Family. I wish to share my reflections along two lines:
  • The ‘history’ behind the feast of the Holy Family.
  • One of the challenges faced by the Holy Family.
The History: The feast of the Holy Family was more of a private devotion popularised by some religious congregations for many centuries. The Church made this feast more ‘official’ in the year 1921. The reason behind such a move, as I see, was the First World War. This war was over in 1918. One of the casualties of this war was the family. The tragic death of dear ones killed on the warfront, orphaned children, destroyed ‘homes’…This list would be endless. We lose more and gain almost nothing from any war. It is a pity that we human beings have refused to learn this simple truth. NOBODY wins NOTHING from NO WAR… (Pardon my English!) Wishing to infuse some hope in the hearts of people devastated by this war, the Church officially integrated the Feast of the Holy Family in the liturgical cycle.
The feast of the Holy Family as we have today is a gift of the Second Vatican Council which took place in the 60s. What was so special about the 60s? Although there was no major political war, people had to face other types of wars. The world was experiencing quite a few changes. One of the major crises was the ‘rebellion’ of the youth. Young people were very disillusioned with the way the world was shaping up. Some of them tried to set things right; many others tried to ‘escape’ reality, since it was too hard to face. Many of them sought peace and love outside families. The Church, in an attempt to restore family as the locus of a healthy Christian life, included the Feast of the Holy Family as part of the Octave of Christmas – the Sunday after Christmas.

In many schools and parishes, during the week leading up to Christmas the Nativity Drama would have been staged, mostly enacted by children. This drama usually begins with the Annunciation scene, where a lovely girl, dressed in white and blue, will be praying. An angel – a cute looking, doll-like child all dressed up in white silk and two wings – will tell Mary that she is to become the mother of Jesus. Mary, without any hesitation, would say ‘yes’. Then she would go to Elizabeth and sing and dance the ‘Magnificat’. Then would follow the manger, the shepherds and the Magi… all lovely scenes. I have enjoyed these shows where adorable little ones tried to remind me of the great mystery of the Incarnation.
But, deep down I also felt uneasy that we had ‘sanitized’ the Christmas story so much. What was the original Christmas like? Lot more stark, horrible, horrifying realties stared Mary, Joseph and Jesus – right in their eyes. It is surely good to depict Christmas in such nice, glorious, holy ways. But we also need to think of the first Christmas in its original colour. Was there any colour at all, I wonder!

The Challenges: I want to reflect on the Holy Family from this ‘colourless’ black-and-white perspective. The original Holy Family was not all the time praying, singing praises to God, sharing pleasantries to one another. They had to face their share of problems. One such problem is given in today’s gospel – the problem of leading the life of a Refugee. This is the problem faced by millions (or billions) of families around the world today. The Gospel of Matthew tells us how Joseph was asked to flee his native land and take refuge in Egypt. Ironically, this was the land where his ancestors suffered years of bondage. Now, Joseph is asked to find his freedom in that land of slavery. The land flowing with milk and honey, promised by God, was turned into a land of death and destruction by Herod, the megalomaniac! He was so addicted to his power that he felt that even a newborn child would be a threat to his throne! History has seen many megalomaniacs whose ruthless suppression has taken a heavy toll of innocent people.
The Feast of the Holy Family painfully brings to our attention the problem of the Refugees. On July 8, Pope Francis visited Lampedusa, an island in the southern part of Italy. Thousands of refugees have come into Italy via this island. Some of the over-crowded boats have capsized in the sea before reaching Lampedusa. Pope Francis went there to celebrate Mass for the refugees who had perished in the sea. While he was there he spoke about ‘the globalisation of indifference’ that was sweeping over the world today.

It is a pity that this ‘indifference’ is sweeping over families. The victims of this indifference within families are mainly the elderly. The passage from Sirach warns us about how we treat our parents, especially in their advanced years…
Sirach 3: 3-4, 12-14
Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure… O son, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; even if he is lacking in understanding, show forbearance; in all your strength do not despise him. For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, and against your sins it will be credited to you.
Instead of treating our parents as a priceless treasure, many of us have very cheap price tags attached to our parents, especially in their old age.
The words of St Paul gives us a no-nonsense message about how to live in a Christian Family.
Colossians 3: 12-14
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
May the Holy Family help us to become more and more human in our day to day life.

Dreams Deliver ‘Emmanuel’ ‘

Angel appears to Joseph in a dream

Christmas is just around the corner… ‘Around the corner’ is a lovely expression to add excitement and expectation. I am sure thousands are children are spending these last few days and nights dreaming of their Christmas gifts. They are also dreaming of Santa Claus bringing these gifts to them. Of course, some grown ups are trying the kill these dreams of children, calling those dreams dangerously childish. In general, adults look at dreams as childish. Imagine a world without dreams! It would be unimaginable!
This year we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the famous speech – ‘I have a dream’ – delivered by the great Martin Luther King Junior on August 28, 1963. We must acknowledge that although his dream of equality between races has not been fully realised, it has been realised up to a certain extent by putting a black person in the White House. The dream of Martin Luther found its echo in Nelson Mandela who fought for this equality in South Africa. Last week we spoke of the Indian poet Bharathiyar who dreamt of a Free India – free not only from the British rule but also from the chains of caste and gender discriminations. The world would be a lot poorer if these ‘dreamers’ had not dared to dream the seemingly impossible!

We are talking of dreams today, since today’s Gospel talks of Joseph meeting an angel in his dreams. The New Testament identifies Joseph as ‘the just man’. Joseph is a silent saint. No word of his is recorded in the gospels. Indeed no word was needed, since his whole life was a great Gospel!
Joseph is honoured by the Church as well by popular devotion as the patron and guardian of so many aspects of human life. He is the patron of the Catholic Church, of virgins, of families, of labourers, of immigrants, of holy death and many, many more... (The patronage list given under St Joseph is stunning. Those who wish to see this list, please go to: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-joseph/ I wish to add one more to this list. I wish to honour St Joseph as the guardian and patron of dreams. It is interesting that both Joseph, the Patriarch as well as Joseph, the Husband of Mary are portrayed as ‘dreamers’. Joseph is mentioned in Matthew’s gospel only on three occasions. In all of them, he is portrayed as being visited by the angel of God in his dreams. One of those instances is given as today’s gospel:
Matthew 1: 18-24
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins…When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife.
Two other instances where Joseph is mentioned, also speak of the angel visiting him in dreams:
Matthew 2: 13-14 and Matthew 2: 19-21

Analysis of these three passages will give us good reasons to say that Joseph is indeed the guardian and patron of dreams. Joseph must have felt extremely happy to have been betrothed to Mary, probably the most admired young girl in Nazareth. But his joy was short lived. His dreams of having a glorious life with Mary, came crashing down when he learnt that Mary was pregnant. It was his choice to either make this public or solve this problem more quietly. He decided on the latter. He was a gentleman to the core. If Joseph had decided on making this public, he would have been honoured; but Mary would have faced death by stoning.
Three years back, all of us were quite disturbed by the famous (infamous?) news about Sakineh Ashtiani, a 43 year old mother, who was accused of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning by the court in Iran. While this news captured the headlines, there were gory details as to how this sentence would be carried out. The accused lady would be buried up to her neck and then people (are they human beings?) would stand around and throw stones at her head until she died.
Last December the gang rape of a young woman in Delhi sent shock waves around the world. This case is still causing pain to the collective conscience of India. For every one or two of these instances that capture media attention, thousands of women are brutally murdered and buried without any trace of attention. If this was the case in the ‘civilized society’ of 21st century, it must have been worse during the time of Joseph and Mary.
As Joseph was struggling to solve this problem, the angel came to him in a dream. If Joseph was a selfish person thinking only of his honour and did not care about Mary, the angel would have found it difficult to enter Joseph’s conscious or subconscious world. God would find it difficult to enter a selfish person’s heart. The more selfless and sensitive a heart, the brighter the chances of divine interruptions… not only during waking hours but also during dreams!

All human beings dream. Then why make Joseph the patron of dreams? I can think of two reasons. There could surely be more.
Reason 1: Joseph was capable of interpreting his dreams as good news even during his agony. For many of us this may not be easy. When we are hemmed in by trials all around us, we tend to lose our normal, day to day activities, especially our sleep. Even if we manage to get some sleep, we may get more nightmares than dreams. Joseph must have been in such a predicament. Still, he recognised his dreams as divine promptings and interventions. Only persons without deceit, persons who are just, are capable of this. Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph?
Reason 2: It is easy to dream dreams; but not easy to act on them. In all the three gospel passages we cited, Joseph woke up from sleep and followed the instructions from the angel. If these instructions were easy, cosy things, then we won’t mind following them. Such instructions are dictated to us through our ‘commercial dreams’… a cream would change our complexion in a matter of days, or a toothpaste would make our friends flock around us all the time. We tend to follow these dreams, don’t we? The instructions that Joseph received in his dreams were demanding, tough decisions – taking a pregnant woman as his wife, taking a baby and his mother at night and travelling to a strange land… Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph? Don’t we wish to honour St Joseph, the Patron of dreams?

By recognising his dreams as divine promptings, and by taking concrete actions on his dreams, Joseph saved not only Mary and Jesus, but also saved the world by letting the Saviour become Emmanuel among us! May St Joseph, the Patron of Dreams, help us dream dreams and be ready to pay the price to make them come true!

Doing Good with a vengeance

Dear Friends,
I am resuming my blog posting after a gap of six weeks. I was out on a vacation.

December 11, last Wednesday, was a very special day. Its date was 11.12.13. The next time this date will appear only in the year 2113… that is 100 years from now. Ever since the Third Millennium began, we have had quite a few days with special numbers. We began this on January 1, 2001 with the number 01.01.01. Then we went on to 02.02.02, 03.03.03 and so on. Last year, 2012, on December 12 we took special note of 12.12.12. These days were ‘celebrated’ not just as special numbers, but with some purpose. Attempts to bring our attention to ‘save our planet’ were taken up by some organisations. I am not sure whether on 11.12.13 any such special attempts were made.

‘Saving our planet’ cannot be achieved on such special days alone. We need to take concerted, continuous efforts to save the environment and save ourselves. The Season of Advent is specially dedicated to remind us how Jesus came as our Saviour and also to remind us that we need to save ourselves and our world. The Third Sunday of Advent is called ‘Gaudete Sunday’ – ‘Rejoice Sunday’. Today’s first reading from Isaiah is highly symbolic and ‘too good’ to be true. Here are the opening lines of this passage:
Isaiah 35: 1
The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus*, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
(*Crocus = flowers in yellow, white and purple shades)
As I read these lines to prepare my reflections, I could easily sense two streams of thoughts within me. On the one side, I wished that impossible dreams like this come true. On the other hand, my ‘practical’ mind tried to brush these dreams aside as too much fantasy, too poetic! Fantasy and poetry cannot feed the stomach, says my practical mind. Is there a place for fantasy and poetry in this world? I think so… definitely. DEFINITELY! What kind of a world will ours be, where there is no poetry, painting, sculpture etc.? In short, what will the world be without art? World without heart!
Art, in my opinion, has been the heart-beat of the human race and has kept alive our dreams and hopes. Art, in its turn, has been kept alive for centuries by religion. Religious scriptures have given birth to so many masterpieces of art! The passage we have just heard from Isaiah is a good sample to show that scriptures have many inspiring, artistic pieces and they become inspiration for other art forms. They contain inspirational passages to lift human spirits which, otherwise, would be weighed down by and entangled in ‘practical’ thinking.

Quite many poets were much ahead of their times and, in that sense, they were prophets. Although, on a personal level, they lived a miserable life, their words lifted people out of their misery. One such poet was the revolutionary Tamil poet Subramaniya Bharathi whose birthday we celebrated on the special day 11.12.13, December 11. His thirst for a free India consumed him while he was only 38 (December 11, 1882 - September 11, 1921). Although he was chained by the oppressive structures and his own poverty, he was eloquent in speaking of real true freedom. His idea of freedom went far beyond political freedom, to gender justice and other forms of freedom and equality… much ahead of his times.

In today’s Gospel we are presented with another hero similar to Bharathi, who, in his personal life, was an unbridled spirit – John the Baptist! Here is the best compliment Jesus gives about John in today’s Gospel: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…” (Matthew 11: 11). John was a lonesome voice in the desert; but, he made himself heard by the people. While he welcomed the common people and gave them hope, he was severe on religious and political leaders. He was becoming too dangerous to the powerful. Result? Imprisonment. Even in prison, John was not bothered about his personal life; he was more worried about his people. He was hoping that after his imprisonment, Jesus would have taken the lead role to set free his people. When nothing was happening after his imprisonment, John sent word to Jesus asking him the key question: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Jesus did not answer this question directly since the idea of freedom was very different between Jesus and John. John’s idea of freedom for the Israelites revolved around these steps: drive away the powerful, capture power from them, and set the people free – in that order. Jesus’ idea began with setting the people free, free from personal bondages first. This is where he seems to resonate with Prophet Isaiah’s dream: Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. (Isaiah 35: 5-6)

The lines leading up to these two verses give us deep thoughts. In the preceding verse Isaiah says:
“Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isaiah 35: 4). When I read the word ‘vengeance’ my mind was curious to find how God’s vengeance would work. But, what a disappointment! Verses 5 and 6 talk nothing about vengeance. Doing something good is not a way of vengeance? Think again. This is probably a much stronger vengeance. God performs miracles with a vengeance!
An ‘eye for an eye’ is the usual, narrow sense of the idea of vengeance. But, ‘turning the other cheek’ is also another form. Doing good is a much stronger way of responding to evil. Such ‘vengeance’ does take place in the world even today. Here is an incident that took place 8 years back. It gives us a lesson in ‘holy vengeance’.
In November 2005 Ahmad Khatib, a 12 year old boy, was killed by the Israeli soldiers who mistook his toy gun for real. His parents Ishmael Khatib and Ablah are simple people and Ishmael is a mechanic. Realising their mistake, the soldiers rushed Ahmad to a hospital. But it was too late. Ahmad died… He was killed by the Israeli soldiers.
Both the parents decided to do something marvellous. They decided to donate all the organs of Ahmad to the hospital in Israel. Many Palestinians were furious with this decision. When asked about this decision, Ishmael said: “They (Israeli forces) killed my son who was healthy, and we want to give his organs to those who need them. No one can tell me what to do. I feel very good that my son’s organs are helping six Israelis . . . I feel that my son has entered the heart of every Israeli. We are doing it for humane purposes and for the sake of the world’s children and the children of this country. I have taken this decision because I have a message for the world: that the Palestinian people want peace — for everyone.” His mother, Ablah, said: “We have no problem whether it is an Israeli or a Palestinian (who receives his organs) because it will give them life.” (A victory over death and hate, Nov. 9, 2005 - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east)
This gesture of Ishmael is all the more marvellous since he spent time in Israeli jails in the 1980s as a militant who fought against occupation. But now he runs the Ahmed Khatib Center for Peace, a small youth center in the Jenin refugee camp. http://www.arabamericannews.com/

God comes with vengeance to shower blessings. Jesus continued this style in his life. It is our duty to continue this rich tradition of ‘vengeance’ during this Advent Season.
