Stars... only at night

I was fond of Christmas plays, especially the final scene when the Magi would appear on stage. These three Kings would come in glittering clothes and a crown made of golden paper. These Kings looked more attractive than the poor shepherds, Mary, Joseph and even Baby Jesus. These Kings still attract me… for very different reasons. The feast of the Three Kings or the Three Wise men is properly known as the Feast of the Epiphany. There are quite a few obvious and not-so-obvious lessons we can learn from this Feast.

First and foremost this Feast tells us one basic truth about God. God is not a private property of any human group. In all probability this day must have shocked quite a few orthodox Jews. They were very sure that the one and only true God was theirs, EXCLUSIVELY. God must have laughed at this idea; but with parental love, God would have allowed them to hold on to this ‘monopoly’. God waited for the opportune time. By inviting the wise men from the East to visit the Divine Babe at Bethlehem, God had broken the myth of the Jews that God was their ‘exclusive property’! God is a true iconoclast, indeed!
God cannot be the private property of any human group. This message is still very relevant to us, especially in the light of all the divisions created by various individuals and groups who have used God and religion as a political weapon of division. The year 2011 began with a bomb explosion in the Coptic Church in Egypt where more than 20 people were killed. The year closed with bomb explosions in some churches in Nigeria where more than 40 people were killed. It is so sad to see that places of worship where God wishes to embrace the whole human race have become battlefields tearing the human family to shreds. God is surely not party to any divisive force! Unifying, reconciling… these are God’s ways. Let us pray on the Feast of the Epiphany that the whole human family may live together as one divine family.

Although this feast is mainly about Jesus revealing himself to the whole world, still, the main characters of this feast seem to be the ‘Magi’. Very little is given about these persons (Kings? Wise men? Astrologers?) in the Bible. Only Matthew’s Gospel (2: 1-12) talks about these persons. But, their effort in following the star has inspired countless men and women to ‘follow the star’ in their lives.
Following a star is a lovely theme to dwell on. The moment I hear the word ‘star’, many thoughts rush in. The first time, probably, I heard this term was in my KG class… “Twinkle, twinkle little star…” From then on, I have learnt of quite a few ‘stars’ in my life. The term ‘star’ is used to indicate someone or something special. Unfortunately, in India this term has been used very generously. We have too many stars – mega stars, super stars! It is unfortunate that those who ‘follow these stars’ are actually chasing a mirage and reach nowhere.

Following a star is possible only at night. Stars are not visible during the day. This means that these wise men must have done most of their journey in the night – not an easy option given their mode of transport etc. It must have been very difficult to gaze upon one little star among the hundreds on a clear sky. What if the sky was not clear? Then they would have to wait until clouds and mist clear. So, their journey must have taken nights, many nights. On quite a few of those nights they may have lost sight of the star due to various reasons. Still, they persisted. This alone is reason enough to celebrate! Patience and persistence seem to have become obsolete words in our dictionary. For us living in the 21st century, there seems to be no time to look to the heavens to gaze upon stars. We are dazzled and even blinded by too many artificial stars and hence real stars have receded from our view. We hardly look up.

Following a star would also mean following an ideal. To follow such stars one needs to look not with the physical eye but with an inner eye, the eyes of our heart.
Leo Buscaglia once told a story that happened while he was a professor at the University of Southern California.  He had a student, Joel, who was brilliant and filled with potential.  Joel, however, had lost his meaning and purpose for living.  His Jewish tradition and background did not serve him. God had become a meaningless symbol.  He had no motivation to live another day and no one could convince him otherwise.  On his way to take his life, he stopped by Leo’s office.  Fortunately, the good doctor was in.
The student told Leo that he had lots of money, clothes and cars.  He had been accepted at several of the top engineering schools for their masters programs.  He had everything going for him even good looks. Women circled around him like sharks.  Yet he had nothing inside.  There was no fire or passion in his belly.  His five senses were incapable of communicating to his faltering identity anything that might produce goals, vision, joy, laughter, enthusiasm, peace and harmony.  He had created an invisible gulf that no one could cross.
Leo said, “Before you take your life, I want you to visit some old people at the Hebrew Home which is adjacent to our campus.”  “What for?” Joel countered.  Leo said, “You need to understand life through the eyes of your heart.”  “The eyes of my heart?” he asked.  “Yes, you need to experience what it is like to give to those who have lost their connection to a meaningful life.  Go to the desk and ask if there are people there who have not been visited for a long time by anyone. You visit them.”  “And say what?”  “I don’t know,” Leo said, “Tell them anything that will give them hope.”  Notice Leo’s strategy – We get back what we give. When we give away what we have, our barriers dissolve.
Leo did not see the student for months.  In fact, he had largely forgotten about him.  One day during the fall, he saw him with other students, a bus and a group of seniors, some who were in wheel chairs.  Joel had organized a trip to the baseball game with a group of his new senior friends who had not been to a game in years.  The two chatted for a moment.  Just before parting Joel said, “Thanks for helping me find the ‘eyes of my heart.’”  Leo nodded and smiled.
"Using The Eyes Of Your Heart" - Sermon Preached By Rev. Richard E. Stetler

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints. (Ephesians 1:18)

Twinkle, twinkle little star

Inventing Reasons… to Celebrate!

Triple Festival (Mupperum Vizhaa) has been in vogue in India, especially in Tamil Nadu for some years now. The Triple Festival concept has been popularised by our politicians who undertake this effort more as a show of their party strength or their sycophancy to their leader. Reasons are discovered or invented by them in order to celebrate any occasion as a Triple Festival. If at all there is something we can learn from the politicians, it will be the concept of celebrating life for reasons… discovered and invented. Of course, we also need to unlearn their pomp and extravaganza.

For the first day of January, we don’t need to discover or invent reasons. There are already more than three, in fact, four reasons that call for celebration. It is a Quadruple Festival. The first reason: this is the beginning of another year in the Gregorian calendar. This is accepted as the New Year Day in most countries. We also have various other calendars that specify different dates as the New Year Day – the Chinese, the Tamil, the Telugu… etc. It would surely help the human spirit if each day of the year is celebrated as ‘first days’. That way we shall have 365 days to celebrate. This year we shall have 366 days, since this is a leap year that comes once every four years.
The U.N. has assigned 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives. The U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said, “Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.” Cooperation can surely begin from our individual families and then extend to the international family. 2012 is also observed as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. Cooperation and Sustainable Energy for All are achievable goals for the human family and very sublime reasons to celebrate.

The second reason to celebrate January 1st is that this is the eighth day after Jesus’ birth. On this day, according to the Gospel of Luke (Lk. 2: 21), the child was taken to the temple for circumcision and he was given the name Jesus. The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is shifted to January 3rd.
The third reason is that the first day of the year is dedicated to praying for world peace. It was introduced in 1967 and was inspired by the encyclicals ‘Pacem in Terris’ and ‘Populorum Progressio’ of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. The World Day of Peace has often been a time when Popes make magisterial declarations relevant to the social doctrine of the Church. Paul VI and John Paul II have each year made important statements on the United Nations, human rights, women's rights, labour unions, economic development, the right to life, international diplomacy, peace in the Holy Land, globalization and terrorism.
Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the theme "Educating Young People in Justice and Peace” for the celebration of the 45th World Day of Peace on January 1, 2012. The theme focuses on an urgent need in the world today: to listen to and enhance the important role of new generations in the realization of the common good, and in the affirmation of a just and peaceful social order where fundamental human rights can be fully expressed and realized. The Message is addressed especially to parents, families and all those involved in the area of education and formation, as well as to leaders in the various spheres of religious, social, political, economic and cultural life and in the media. http://www.news.va/en/news/papal-message-for-world-day-of-peace-2012
Although world peace is still a distant dream, we can surely celebrate this dream and pray fervently that this dream may be realised especially among the youth. Let us give a chance for the youth to live in Peace!

The fourth and final reason is that this is the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God – the official Feast of January 1. Of all the four reasons, this is given as the prime reason by the Catholic Church for a Solemn Feast. Of all the four reasons, this one seems the most intriguing. The very reason the Church gives as a reason for celebration would have been a reason for condemnation in Mary’s time. She became a Virgin Mother defying not only natural laws, but also the laws of her Jewish society. This is an example to tell us that we can discover or invent reasons to celebrate life against all odds.

Christmas and New Year is a peak time for sharing greetings. Millions of greetings fill our communication lines. We greet those we love and admire. Here is a greeting to Mary, the Mother of God, in the form of a letter:

Dear Mother Mary,
We, your children, pen these few lines to show you how much we love and admire you for being such a great Mother. On the very first day of the calendar year we wish to think of you as the Mother of God and celebrate it. But, I was just wondering whether it was possible for you to celebrate this very same fact – becoming the Mother of God. For you, the days following your meeting with Angel Gabriel must have been quite fearful and uncertain.
The land in which you lived is still surrounded by fear and uncertainty. We realise that it is not easy for people to live in war zones – especially for young girls. You lived as a young lady in Roman occupied territory. You must have spent days and nights in constant fear.
Today we celebrate your Motherhood and we have even built magnificent churches  in your name. Some of these churches are marvels in marbles and granite stones. But, if the people of your times had learnt that you had become a mother before your wedding, they too would have used stones… to kill and bury you. We take pride in building thousands of churches in your name since you had built yourself into a temple of God trusting only on God.
Rightly has William Wordsworth written these lovely lines about you:
Mother! whose virgin bosom was uncrost
With the least shade of thought to sin allied;
Woman! above all women glorified,
Our tainted nature's solitary boast;…
Not only Wordsworth, but thousands upon thousands of artists have been inspired to sing your praises through their masterpieces of art. You are such an inspiration for all of us, Mom! It is so fitting that you have taken the pride of place on the very first day of the year. May you have many more special days in our New Year!

With love and admiration,
Your fortunate children.

“Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.”
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

(Woman! above all women glorified,Our tainted nature's solitary boast)

Adoration of the Shepherds
Gerard (Gerrit) van Honthorst (1590-1656)
http://www.joyfulheart.com/christmas/christmas_artwork.htm

About ten years back I was celebrating the Christmas Midnight Mass in one of the suburbs of Chennai. Every year when Christmas comes around, the thought of that Mass would cross my mind. This year too it is there fresh in my memory.
The church was overflowing and they were all dressed for the occasion. As the time for the homily drew near, I looked up at the audience and at the entrance to the church. Suddenly a thought crossed my mind and I began the homily with this question: “Friends, suppose Mary and Joseph of the original Christmas night were to walk into this church right now, what would happen? How would we feel?”
I could see a lot of smiles among the people… One of the ladies, as if speaking for the rest of them said, “Oh, what a joy! That would be the most meaningful Christmas we would have ever celebrated! It would be a great blessing indeed.” I told them not to be so quick in responding but, to think of that situation a little more deeply. I continued to explain the situation in detail… “Sure! We would be the happiest people on earth if we knew that the two persons entering our church were Mary and Joseph. But, none of us know that. They are simply two strangers in our neighbourhood. We have not seen them earlier. They have, perhaps, travelled for three to four days on a donkey or a mule. Their clothes are not clean, to say the least. They may not have had a wash. They are extremely tired. Above all, the lady is pregnant and is expecting the child any moment. Perhaps, she is already feeling the birth pangs. That is why the man, seeing a church close by, must have brought her in…”
As I was giving these details, their enthusiasm as well as their smiles vanished. There was a murmur. Most of them in that church were repatriates from a neighbouring country. Therefore they knew firsthand what it would be like to land in a strange place in a crisis situation. I continued with the homily trying to share with them my ideas of the first Christmas and how it was not that glorious as we celebrate it today.
After the Mass and in the subsequent years during Christmas Season this question would come back to me quite often… What would I have done if Mary and Joseph walked into the church where I was celebrating the Midnight Mass? Would I have stopped celebrating the Mass and helped the poor couple? I would have certainly done so, if … a BIG IF… IF I had known that they were Mary and Joseph and that Mary was about to give birth to Jesus, the only reason why we were gathered in the Church. What better place than a church for Jesus to be born! What a truly blessed Christmas Mass it would turn out to be!
All these are lovely holy thoughts… but, the reality would be different. Unfortunately, I would have been as ignorant as the people around the altar. Therefore, in all probability, I would have suggested some alternate place, an alternate solution for the poor couple and proceeded with the Midnight Mass. Neither I nor the people in the church could be faulted for our decisions. We simply did not know that real Christmas was going to happen among us!

The people of Bethlehem too did not know that during the first Christmas. That brings us to one of the key sentences in today’s Gospel … namely, “there was no place for them in the inn.” (Lk. 2: 7) This sentence usually makes us angry towards the people of Bethlehem, especially the inn-keeper, who refused a place for the birth of Jesus. IF they had known that the long-awaited Saviour was at their door, would they have refused a place? Most certainly not. If an angel with ‘a multitude of heavenly host’ had appeared before them and said: “Behold your Saviour!”, not only the people in the inn, but the whole of Bethlehem would have gathered around Mary and Joseph to give them and the New-born a royal welcome… The key words here are: if they had known… a BIG IF, indeed! The people of Bethlehem did not know them. The people and I in the suburb of Chennai would not have known them either. On the first Christmas night, God slipped into humanity in the quietest way possible and surprised all of us. While we keep looking for surprises under the Christmas Tree, God keeps surprising us in various other ways year after year.

This was not the only surprise that Jesus had in store. The most awaited message of thousands of years, namely, “Your Saviour is born” was given on this very same day, but not in the way the people of Israel had expected. This message was not trumpeted from the pinnacle of Jerusalem temple, but to the shepherds in the fields. Surprise, again! The shepherds as well as the message given to them are crucial to our reflection today.
Today’s Gospel begins with the solemn words… “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled… And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. (Lk. 2: 1, 3) If the whole world was to be enrolled, then why were the shepherds out in the field? Were they not to be enrolled? In all probability they were not counted among the human race. That is why they were there as part of the cattle. To them this great message was given.
The message given by the angel goes like this: “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Lk. 2: 10-12)
Two groups of people mentioned in this message, set me thinking… The ‘you’ (meaning, the shepherds) and ‘all the people’ are contrasted. I would like to rephrase the message of the angel in the following words: “Don’t be afraid, my shepherds. I have brought good news of great joy meant for all the people. But, the people are too busy and pre-occupied with so many things to receive this news. Therefore I am bringing it to you. A Saviour is born for you and like you… on the fringes of human society. There was no place for him in the inn. A babe is lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes. I am sure you will not miss the babe. I doubt whether the people would recognise a Saviour in this Babe. You would surely be able to recognise your Saviour easily.”

Here is an imaginary scene, but could well happen to any one of us… Daddy has come home for Christmas after five years. He has been abroad, working hard. He has brought so many gifts. Children are overjoyed and have begun to decorate the house and the crib with all fancy stuff Dad has brought. On Christmas night Dad is bringing Baby Jesus to place Him in the crib… But, the crib is filled with so many things from abroad that there is no place for Baby Jesus there!

Is there room for the Saviour in our lives, or, are we too busy with Christmas? Are we ready to recognise the Saviour lying in a manger wrapped in rags?
