Love… better than sacrifices

Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself

Love God… Love your Neighbour… So, what’s new? Nothing. Should novelty dictate my reflections? This was my concern as I began reflecting on this Sunday’s Gospel. Today’s Gospel (Mark 12: 28-34) begins as a sequel to what happened earlier in the same chapter… namely, the conversation (shall we say, confrontation?) of the Sadducees with Jesus over Resurrection. They had fabricated a fancy story (of seven brothers marrying the same lady) to see how Jesus would resolve polygamy and ‘after-life’.
The smart answer of Jesus impressed a scribe standing close by. He begins today’s discussion with a question: "Which commandment is the first of all?" Won’t a scribe know the answer to this question? Was he also trying to corner Jesus? It does not matter… Jesus takes this opportunity to teach the two basic commandments of Christianity… Love God… Love your Neighbour… Jesus literally proclaims it with the familiar phrase of all Israelites, namely, “Hear, O Israel”. When Israelites hear this phrase, they would know that what follows is of substance and significance.

Jesus had not said anything new in this passage. He was merely quoting from the Old Testament – from Moses. The master stroke of Jesus was… that he placed both these commandments, found in two different books of the Old Testament, close to each other and given both of them top priority. For a cursory glance, today’s gospel passage seems to talk of TWO COMMANDMENTS of love. But on closer scrutiny, one can easily find THREE COMMANDMENTS. Three? Yes, the second commandment says: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' We can see that love of self is a pre-condition for love of neighbour. It is obvious that only those who can love themselves, respect themselves, can love and respect others.

Love of self can easily be misinterpreted as self-love… selfishness. Far from it! One who does not have love and respect for oneself becomes self-loving, selfish and self-centred! The latter is a prison which gets filled up with only one person – I. There is no place for God or neighbour. Unfortunately, the commercial world tries its best to equate love of self with self-love and selfishness. Thus it puts a price tag on even the most sincere love!

Another thought that crossed my mind while reading the second-cum-third commandment, in today’s Gospel, was that this is an easier commandment than the one Jesus gave to his disciples at the Last Supper.
John 15: 12-13
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
To love others as Jesus has loved me? Well, that would be my life-long goal, dream etc. But, the commandment given in today’s Gospel: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself' seems like a much easier target that I can strive and even achieve!

The Scribe was pleased with the answer of Jesus. He repeats the words of Jesus as if to express his full agreement on this… But, then he goes further. He says: “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and there is no other but he; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 12: 32-33)
It is surprising to see a scribe speak in this fashion. Was he emotionally carried away? A scribe giving more emphasis on a life lived in love than burnt sacrifices, is a real welcome change. That is why Jesus gave him the final approval: “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
What the scribe said is a lovely definition of LOVE. Love is better than all sacrifices, since a life lived in love is a continuous sacrifice. We can recollect so many persons who have lived a sacrificial life with love. Here are two episodes that tugged at my heart recently.

July 3rd evening, (2012) on the banks of the river in Loudi City Sunshuihe Park, when Deng Jinjie’s body was brought ashore, both shores were crowded with hundreds and thousands of city residents who had heard what happened. His two dogs were still waiting anxiously outside of the crowds for their master to take them home, but Deng Jinjie who loved his dogs as much as his own life will never again be able to take care of them.
An hour earlier, in order to save a family of three from drowning, 27-year-old Deng Jinjie had jumped into the river without regard for his personal danger. Unfortunately, he ran out of strength and was swallowed by the rapid river waters. What makes people bitterly disappointed is that, just as Deng Jinjie was in danger and whether he was alive or dead was unknown, not only did the family of three that he rescued not actively try to help, they also didn’t stick around to see what would happen, instead indifferently choosing to leave… A witness says: When the crowd stopped the family of three from leaving, the woman said “none of my damn business” before driving away.

Here is another episode taken from the memoirs of  Bl.Mother Teresa:

One night a man came to our house and told me, “There is a family with eight children. They have not eaten for days,” I took some food and I went. When I finally came to the family, I saw the faces of those little children disfigured by hunger. There was no sorrow or sadness in their faces, just the deep pain of hunger. I gave the rice to the mother. She divided it in two, and went out, carrying half the rice with her. When she came back, I asked her, “Where did you go?” She gave me this simple answer, “To my neighbors-they are hungry also.”
I was not surprised that she gave–because poor people are generous. But I was surprised that she knew they were hungry. As a rule, when we are suffering, we are so focused on ourselves we have no time for others.

Respectful Perspective

Healing of the Blind Man by Brian Jekel

“Calling by name” and “Having proper perspective” are two ideas that crossed my mind when I read today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 46-52). These two ideas are inter-linked. Calling by name gives the basic respect due to a person. But, many a time this basic respect is not given because of our refusal to have proper perspective!

All the three synoptic gospels record the event of Jesus curing a blind person as the final miracle before the Passion. It looks as if Jesus was making a final appeal to those around him that they may see better! Only in Mark, the visually challenged person is given an identity - Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus. Usually, in the gospel miracles of curing, the patients are mentioned by general terms: leprosy patient, one possessed, the paralytic, the deaf and mute etc… This is the only miracle where the patient, and that too a blind beggar, is given a proper name. (This reminds us of the only parable where Jesus mentions one of the characters by name – Lazarus, once again a beggar!) This gives us an opportunity to reflect on ‘being called by name’. By calling someone by name, that person who is usually looked upon as a thing, a furniture… blossoms into a PERSON!
All of us were born into this world as a mere number – the 304th child in the hospital, or the fifth child in the family etc. The name given to us changes us from a number to a unique person. Our name is an identity we carry life-long. This identity is precious, provided our names are cherished by people around us. But for many of us, this identity gets twisted, mangled, tarnished, broken, shattered… So, there are two sides to this coin called ‘calling by name’.

First the bright side of the coin: In the medical profession, the person who becomes a doctor, is often called by the title ‘doctor’ than by the name. The same goes for teacher, professor, police inspector etc… These professional titles almost replace the names of the individual. Such practices are followed in religious circles too. The titles - Father, Brother, Sister, My Lord, Your Grace… All these titles can make one forget one’s name. I guess the identity of the profession is so respectful that these persons do not mind losing the identity they acquired at birth – the identity of their own names.

Now, the darker side of the coin: How do we call those who do menial services like sweeping the streets, mending shoes, cleaning vessels and clothes in our houses? Are they called by their ‘profession’? Do we consider these works as ‘profession’ at all? Do we call these individuals by their names? Do we take the effort to know the names of these persons? Hardly… For most of us those who are involved in these hard labours simply belong to the group of “Hei, you”.
In every institution that I served or visited, I made it a point to learn the names of those who were doing services like the receptionist, the table boys, the sweepers, the peons… and called them by name. I have enjoyed the smile my effort brought to their faces. In the midst of an avalanche of ‘hei, you’ greetings, my attempt to call them by name, surely made a difference. There is a special power behind calling someone by name, especially those who serve us in different ways… Try it. You won’t regret this effort!

The second idea that we can derive from this gospel is “having a proper perspective”.
Bartimaeus could not see with his physical eyes. But he had a better perspective of Jesus – calling him by the special title: Jesus, son of David. This is an insight that Bartimaeus received even before receiving his bodily sight. He could see with the eyes of the heart… the eyes of faith. The lovely words of Helen Keller are enlightening: “The most beautiful things in the world can’t be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” I am sure Helen Keller knew what she was talking about.

Let me remind you of two stories that talk about the power of seeing with the heart and having proper perspective:
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city’s skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. He was thoroughly shocked. The nurse asked him why he looked so shocked. He recounted all that had happened in that room with his neighbour. What the nurse told him made him freeze in further shock. The nurse said that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. This visually challenged person could see beyond the wall… just to make life easier for his companion.

The other story also has some connection with a window. Husband and wife move into a new home. The next day morning, the lady sipping her coffee, sees through her glass window at the backyard of the next house. She then calls her husband and tells him, “Oh, our neighbour doesn’t know how to wash clothes. See, how dirty they are.” This complaint goes on for three days. On the fourth day, the lady is surprised to see the washed clothes all spick and span. She called her husband and said: “Our neighbour must have heard my comments. Today she has done a good job of washing her clothes.” The husband said, “Honey, this morning I cleaned our window panes.”

Getting a proper perspective is a gift from God. Let us ask along with Bartimaeus, “Rabbi, let me see again.”

கண் பார்வை இல்லாமல், காது கேளாமல், வாய் பேசாமல் இருந்த ஹெலன் கெல்லெர் கூறிய அழகான சொற்கள்: “The most beautiful things in the world can’t be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

CHAIR or CROSS? CHOICE IS YOURS

Servant Leadership Logo

In the recent months, the Presidential race of the U.S. has caught the media attention of the world for many right and wrong reasons. As against this, without much media attention, this Sunday, October 21st, known as the Mission Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI will declare seven Blesseds as Saints. These two events – the Presidential race and the Canonisation of seven Blesseds – seem to present the main theme of today’s Gospel.
This Sunday’s Gospel is about a choice – Chair or Cross? Boss or Servant? Of course, our Christian instincts tell us to choose the latter. Instincts alone can’t take us far. We need convictions. Take up the cross? Yes. Carry the Cross? Okay… Be nailed to the cross? May be… Be nailed to it for hours, days, … for ever? Well, let me think about it!
I think both a Chair and a Cross are thrones. Chair with a capital C denotes the chair of power. There have been many who have died for a Chair and many more who have killed for a Chair. We also know that many have been killed on a cross and many have died for the Cross.

Here is an incident recorded by a priest who offered to work with Mother Teresa when she was in Kolkatta. I am taking this incident as narrated by Fr Joseph Pellegrino in his homily (http://homilies.net): “Fr. John Fullenbach is a professor of ecclesiology in Rome. One year he had a lot of time between the semesters he was teaching, so he decided to go to India and work alongside Mother Theresa and her sisters. He relates that he felt very good about himself on the plane on the way to India. That feeling did not last one full day. The first day he went to volunteer, one of the sisters asked him to join her walking through a very difficult section of Calcutta. It was the place where the poorest were dropped off to die. When they got there, a frail woman begged the sister and Fr. Fullenbach to follow her. She led them to an elderly man, probably her husband, spending his last few days lying in filth. Fr. Fullenbach bent over the man to reassure him and tell him they would take him indoors to a comfortable place to rest. As he bent down, the man spit in Father’s face. True story. Fr. Fullenbach was furious. He came all the way from Rome for this? He was a famous theologian and author. But he swallowed hard, picked up the man and brought him to the empty warehouse the sisters had made into a hospice. It was nothing more than a huge room with cots. There Fr. Fullenbach cleaned the man and fed him. But the entire time he was angry that this man should behave so badly towards him. Fr. Fullenbach was being taught humility. It was more important for him to help the man than for the man to be grateful.” Fr Pellegrino goes on to talk about how Fr Fullenbach learnt a lot more lessons during his stay with Mother Teresa.

I remember another incident related in connection with the Mother. Once a journalist spent one full day with Mother Teresa and at the end of the day he seemed to have said that even if he was offered ten thousand dollars, he would not be able to do that work. The Mother seemed to have said: “Neither will I do this for ten thousand dollars.”
Ten thousand dollars is nothing compared to the throne Mother Teresa has set up in the hearts of millions of people around the world. Not only she… There are many more selfless persons who have chosen the cross and hence are enthroned in many hearts.

Servant Leadership is a concept that has gained momentum in quite a few companies and institutions around the world. I think even business schools have begun to teach this! My curiosity about Servant Leadership led me to Wikipedia. I felt good reading in that site that the wisdom from the East – India and China – has helped the west to think about Servant Leadership. The quote from Chanakya’s Arthashastra is quite enlightening.
“The king (leader) shall consider as good, not what pleases himself but what pleases his subjects… The king (leader) is a paid servant and enjoys the resources of the state together with the people.”
The leader is a paid servant! Come an election… Most of our ministers would wax eloquence calling themselves public servants. They are expected to enjoy the resources of the state TOGETHER WITH THE PEOPLE. Although this wisdom came from India, we have lost this wisdom somewhere along the way.
The Chinese wisdom is again quite significant. There are passages that relate to servant leadership in the Tao Te Ching, attributed to Lao-Tzu, who is believed to have lived in China sometime between 570 B.C. and 490 B.C.: “The highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware. Next comes one whom they love and praise. Next comes one whom they fear. Next comes one whom they despise and defy. When you are lacking in faith, Others will be unfaithful to you. The Sage is self-effacing and scanty of words. When his task is accomplished and things have been completed, All the people say, ‘We ourselves have achieved it!’”
After quoting Chanakya and Lao-Tzu, Wikipedia quotes Jesus and the passage from Mark which we heard in today’s Sunday liturgy. Jesus urged his followers to be servants first. He told his followers: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28; also Mark 10:42-45)

The Servant Leadership, inspired by Jesus, Chanakya and Lao-Tzu has inspired quite a few great leaders. Here is a story of one such inspiring leader: During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers who were busy pulling out a horse carriage stuck in deep mud. Their officer was shouting instructions to them while making no attempt to help. The stranger who witnessed the scene asked the officer why he wasn't helping. With great dignity, the officer replied, "Sir, I am a Corporal!" The stranger dismounted from his horse and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers himself. When the job was completed, he turned to the corporal and said, "Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this, and don’t have enough men to do it, inform your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again." Too late, the proud Corporal recognized General Washington.

Here are some relevant snippets from an article Warren Buffet: Humblest Billionaire on Earth
“According to a report, he lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, which he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house.
Amazingly, it is reported that he drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him. Because of his genuine love and tremendous financial and moral supports he offers to the needy and humanity around the world, he doesn’t fear danger as his house does not have a wall or a fence. The report adds that “he does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television”
If that is incredibly unbelievable, then take this: “Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk and never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.” Yet with an estimated current net worth over US$50 billion, his 2006 annual salary of about $100,000 is infinitesimal by all standards compared to remuneration of other CEOs in similar and relatively smaller companies.

I feel that George Washington, Mother Teresa and Warren Buffett hold a special place in humanity. They are living examples of what Jesus speaks of in today’s Gospel – Servant Leadership.
Chair and Cross are signs of getting enthroned. The way to the Chair is overcrowded. You may have to step on others’ toes and sometimes may have to crush others under your feet. The way to the Cross, on the other hand, will be relatively free.  The choice is yours!

Carved in stony hearts…

Brooklyn Museum - The Pharisees Question Jesus - James Tissot

I am sure many of you have heard of the Jesuit priest Anthony de Mello, who blazed a unique trail for himself in the world of spirituality. Of course, he had also been the centre of quite a few controversies… I love his stories. One of his stories is the starting point of our Sunday reflection today… The Guru’s Cat, published in ‘The Song of the Bird’.
Here is the original version as given by Fr de Mello:
Each time the guru sat for worship with his students, the ashram cat would come in to distract them, so he ordered them to tie it when the ashram was at prayer.
After the guru died, the cat continued to be tied at worship time. And when the cat expired, another cat was brought into the ashram to make sure that the guru’s orders were faithfully observed at worship time.
Centuries passed and learned treatises were written by the guru’s scholarly disciples on the liturgical significance of tying up a cat while worship is performed.

When I read the Gospel passage for this Sunday, this story spontaneously presented itself to me. Kindly allow me to embellish this story a bit… to drive home a point – the point about rituals!
When the guru died, the cat, which was attached to the guru, did not bother to go to the prayer hall. But the ashram members thought that it was odd to begin their worship without the cat. So, they searched the ashram, found the cat, brought it to the prayer hall, tied it to a particular pillar and then sat down for prayer.
When the cat died, the members of the ashram went all over the town to look for a cat that was the exact replica of the one that died. They made sure that the new cat was tied to the same pillar and then sat down for their prayer.
Centuries passed; many things had changed in the ashram. But the one thing that had not changed was the ‘cat-rite’ that had to be done at the time of worship… Pardon me if my embellishment looks a bit laboured!

The cat which was considered a distraction during the worship, over time became essential for the worship. Prayer was considered more precious than the cat and hence, it was tied up. But, over the years, the cat became more precious than prayer and, therefore, worship was tied to a cat-rite. This is the power of rituals!
Our day to day life is filled with lots of rituals, starting from the way we freshen up in the morning. These rituals are a help to us, as long as they remain… helps. The moment they assume more importance, they can become hell, instead of help. This is not a simple play on words. We are only painfully aware of the amount of violence unleashed when some rituals are tampered with.

Today’s Gospel passage is about the ritual washing practised by the Israelites. This ritual was only a tiny part of the life of Israelites filled with hundreds of rituals. These rituals were defined and redefined by the religious leaders… Year after year, these rituals and their prescriptions seemed to expand… against the warning given to them by Moses, not to do so. We read this warning of Moses in the first reading today:
Deuteronomy 4 : 1-2
"And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you, and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Moses gave them a simple instruction… don’t add or delete anything, just follow them in life. Jesus was aware that this warning of Moses was not heeded. The religious leaders seemed to derive special pleasure in imposing rules and more rules on the innocent people. Hence, we see Jesus giving a warning to the simple people about these leaders:
Mathew 23: 1-4
Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice. They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.

A society which carries a heavy load of tradition, cult, ritual etc., tends to ‘deify’ these rituals. Such a situation alienates them from God and ties them to the rituals. A warning to this effect was given by the Prophet Isaiah to which Jesus makes an allusion in today’s Gospel. Here is the original warning as given by Isaiah:
Isaiah 29: 13
And the Lord said: "Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men learned by rote.”

It is so easy to memorise prayers, mumble them as part of one’s ritual, while our hearts remain far away from God. Here is a tiny story written by William Barclay to illustrate this:
A man steeped in religious rituals was pursuing an enemy to kill him. In the midst of the pursuit the public call to prayer sounded. Instantly the ‘religious’ man got off his horse, knelt down and prayed the required prayers as fast as he could. Then he leaped back on his horse to pursue his enemy in order to kill him.

Let me close these reflections with a final imagery that flashed across my mind about those who would die or kill for their rituals. We know that when rituals are carved on stone, they tend to stay for ever. When there are not stones available in the external world, the stony hearts of the ritualistic persons are available! Beware of idolatry… the idolatry of worshipping stony hearts!
