To Serve or not to Serve – God or mammon

Rich vs Poor

September 15, last Sunday, we remembered the Feast of the Mother of Sorrows. The figure of Mother Mary carrying the lacerated body of Christ is etched deep in every Christian’s mind. This image naturally brought to mind thousands of mothers who mourn the loss of their children in places like Syria.
September 15, was also the International Day of Democracy. September 21, Saturday, was the International Day of Peace. Democracy and Peace are probably getting removed from the vocabulary of the next generation. For them, these terms could have only some historical value. Or, they would be taught another warped definition of Peace and Democracy.
One of the most popular definitions of Democracy that our generation can still remember is the famous line given by Abraham Lincoln: “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The moment I thought of this quote, my mind instinctively thought of another popular quote of Lincoln, namely: “You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” (There are various versions of this quote, although the sense remains the same.) Is there an intrinsic connection between these two quotes of Lincoln? Has ‘fooling all the people all the time’ got anything to do with Democracy – and Peace - as we see today?

As I was thinking of the combination deception and democracy, my mind also thought of the word ‘scam’ and I was literally flooded with information from the web about scams in human history. One of them was titled “THE BIGGEST SCAM IN HISTORY”. This article was about the Federal Reserve Bank, a private company of bankers in the U.S. The opening line of this article goes like this: “Pay attention now, you're about to read about the biggest and most successful scam in History.” For a person living at present these words would sound as a joke, since we keep hearing of scams right, left and centre. As I was browsing through this article, I came across some interesting data about Lincoln and Kennedy. I quote from this article:
On June 4, 1963, President Kennedy signed a Presidential decree, Executive Order 11110.  This order virtually stripped the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the United States Government at interest.  President Kennedy declared the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank would soon be out of business.  In less than five months after signing that executive order President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
Lincoln also took on the bankers and that brave bold step may also have cost him his life.
During the Civil War (from 1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War for the North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was horrified and greatly distressed, and he would not think of plunging his beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.
So Lincoln advised Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort… The Treasury notes were printed with green ink on the back, so the people called them "Greenbacks". Lincoln had printed 400 million dollars worth of Greenbacks (the exact amount being $449,338,902), money that he delegated to be created, a debt-free and interest-free money to finance the War…Lincoln was assassinated shortly after the war and Congress revoked the Greenback Law and enacted, in its place, the National Banking Act…
When you follow the money, you find there was no one in the world who had a better reason to kill these two Presidents than the bankers.

We usually think that the American President is a very powerful person. But, when I read about these two Presidents, my ideas changed. There seem to be other super powers controlling the American President – mainly money power! When money becomes powerful enough to replace God, what becomes of a President? It is interesting that on every dollar bill of the U.S. the words “In God We Trust” are printed. What a paradox! The ‘God’ mentioned in a dollar bill, I presume, is the Dollar itself! The power of money is not a phenomenon specific to the U.S. This is a world-wide phenomenon.
Why are we speaking about money in our Sunday reflection? We are invited to reflect on choosing between God and mammon in today’s Gospel. Jesus closes today’s Gospel with a clear, powerful statement: “You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Any person with some practical sense would hesitate to take these words of Jesus seriously. How does one live without money? – would be the most common-sense question. Is Jesus saying that we need to give up money in order to obtain God? I don’t think so. In the above statement of Jesus the key word is – Serve. You cannot serve God and mammon. If we look at the whole verse, this becomes clear:
No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Luke 16:13)
Once a person begins a debate between whom to serve… God or mammon (money), the unseen God gets side-lined while the much seen money is enthroned on the altar. Unfortunately such an enthronement relegates not only God, but all human values.
Getting back to our topic of how the U.S. seems to serve mammon, I came across some videos of the interviews given by John Perkins, the author of the famous best-seller of 2004 – namely, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.
In his interview he spoke about ‘Corporatocracy’ – the reign of corporate people! He claims that whether the U.S. is ruled by the Republicans or the Democrats it is the corporate people who pull all the strings. He talks of how the U.S. got into the Latin America, Asia and the Gulf countries to extend the empire of the corporate giants.
As a member of the group of economic hit men sent to the Latin American countries, he seems to be speaking from his personal experience. It is frightening to listen to him. Even if half of what he says is true, it is still disturbing and frightening. Countries like India which suffered heavily as a British colony, now suffer from neo-colonisation of the U.S., rather from ‘Corporatocracy’.

My friend, Fr E. Abraham S.J., the present Director of XLRI, India, had sent me a short reflection with the title - NOT JUST AN ECONOMIC CRISIS. Let me quote a few lines from this write-up:
Unfortunately, wealth has become an idol of immense power in our globalized world – a power that, in order to keep going, demands more and more victims everyday. It is a power that dehumanizes and impoverishes human history more each day.  Right now we find ourselves trapped in a crisis that is brought about, for the most part, by an obsession with accumulating things.
In effect, everything is organized, moved, and energized from this rubric: go for more productivity, more consumption, more well-being, more energy, more power over people… This rubric is imperialistic. If we don’t stop it, it can put at risk all human beings and the planet itself.

Maybe the first step is to be conscious of what is happening. This isn’t just an economic crisis. It’s a social and human crisis. At this point we already have enough data gathered from near and far to see the extent of the human drama we are immersed in. Every day it is more evident that a system that leads a minority of the rich to accumulate more and more power, abandoning millions of human beings to hunger and misery, is an unacceptable stupidity. It’s needless to look any further.
At this point even the most progressive societies aren’t capable of providing a dignified job for millions of their citizens. What kind of progress is it that pushes us toward well-being, while leaving so many families without resources to live in dignity?
This crisis is destroying the democratic process. Pushed by the demands of big money, governments can’t serve the true needs of their people. What is politics if it no longer serves the common good?

What happened on September 7 must be still fresh in our memory. In the choice between God and mammon, many of us, irrespective of religion, chose God on that day through our prayers and fasting. On that day, when money power was muscling its way to bombard Syria, millions across the globe turned to God to rein in this destructive power. At least for the time being, God seems to have won this encounter. Let us continue to put God back on the altar, removing mammon from the prime place in our personal lives, first, so that we can hope to remove mammon from the high place it holds in our world!

Rich vs Poor

•              You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man - அதாவது, 'பொருளாதாரம் கொண்டு கொலைசெய்த ஒருவரின் பாவ அறிக்கை' என்பது இந்நூலின் தலைப்பு.

Lost and Found காணாமல் போவதும்...

The month of September has three Feasts of our Lady coming in quick succession. September 8 – Birthday of Mary; September 12 – The Holy Name of Mary and September 15 – The Mother of Sorrows. Of these, September 8, and 15 fall on Sunday, this year. Hence, we did not really celebrate these Feasts. Still, the Birthday of Mary, which is also celebrated as the Lady of Good Health in India (especially Velankanni), and the Feast of the Mother of Sorrows require some attention in the context of the world as well as the Gospel for this Sunday.
Good Health and Sorrows are two ‘motherly’ aspects which all of us have experienced. Mothers suffer sorrow after sorrow while providing good health to the family members. The world today seems to be drifting in the opposite direction to these ‘motherly’ qualities. The world seems to deny good health to its people by inflicting sorrow after sorrow. In recent times, our conversations have been on chemical weapons, military attack, more loss of life, more misery to the people who have already suffered the tragedy of war for the past two years.

Against such a background, Pope Francis called for a day of prayer and fasting on September 7. The response to this call – not only from the Christian world, but from all over the world – was a clear proof that the human family is craving for peace, harmony… in short, Good Health. The efforts undertaken on the eve of the Feast of our Lady of Good Health (Sep. 7) seem to have infused some health into this ‘trigger-happy’ world. For the past one week there is less talk of military aggression and more thoughts on diplomatic solutions to the problems of Syria.
Although we thank God and our Lady for this ‘improved health’ of the world, we are still far from safe. The war clouds around Syria are still dark and gloomy. Hence, we bring those innocent people before the Lord once again this week. These ‘lost people’ need to get back home!

The Gospel we have for this Sunday’s liturgy talks of getting back home. It makes very much sense with the present situation, especially around Syria! When I speak of how the Gospel makes sense with this situation, I am disturbed by the efforts of the media world, especially in the U.S., to make sense of the present tense situation of Syria vis-à-vis the Bible. There have been some programmes raising the question: If and when the U.S. begins its attack on Syria, would that be the ‘end of Damascus’ as predicted in the Bible by the Prophet Isaiah?
While Pope Francis and the Christian world are trying to make sense of this meaningless tragedy that has surrounded Syria and many other countries, with the help of God’s words, it is sickening to see how the media in the U.S. is trying to ‘sensationalise’ the destruction of Damascus via Biblical references!
Here are two headlines that appeared in the media depicting this ‘media game’:

Leaving aside this media game, let us turn to today’s Gospel taken from Luke Chapter 15. This Chapter from Luke is called ‘A Gospel within the Gospel’, since it gives us those uplifting ‘lost and found’ stories of the Sheep, Coin and Son! It is the story of getting back home, being welcomed by God… all that is the core of God’s love.
I may have reflected on this parable at least on ten different occasions for my homilies. Almost on all these occasions, I have focussed more on the second part of the parable… the sweet ending which tells us that the Father, the Lost Son and, possibly, the First Son ‘lived ever after happily’!
Today I would like to spend more time on the first part of the parable… namely the part where the younger son gets lost and rediscovers himself! Getting lost could be a help to fresh discovery. The younger son, the Lost Son gets his enlightenment while feeding the pigs – a very unlikely place for ‘enlightenment’!

My inspiration to focus on the first part of the parable came from Ron Rolheiser, a great Columnist and Author. In one of his reflections titled ‘Lost is a Place Too’, he writes like this (I quote him extensively):
During the summer when I was fourteen, my inner world collapsed. It began with the suicide of a neighbor. A young man whose health and body I envied went out one night and hung himself. Then another young man from our small farming community was killed in an industrial accident, and the summer ended with a classmate, a close friend, dying in a horse-back riding accident. I served as an altar-server at each of their funerals. My outside world stayed the same, but inside…things were dark, spinning, scary. I was in a free-fall. The specter of death suddenly colored my whole world and, even though I was only fourteen years old, I was now an old man inside. A certain youthfulness and joie de vivre slipped away from me for good. It truly was a summer of my discontent. I envied everyone who wasn't as depressed as I was. I felt myself the saddest 14 year-old in the world.
But, as all that pain, disillusionment, and loss of self-confidence was seeping into my life, something else was seeping in too, a deeper faith, a deeper vision of things, an acceptance of my vulnerability and mortality, and a sense of my vocation. I'm a priest today because of that summer. It remains still the most painful, insecure, depressed period of my life. But it remains too the time of deepest growth. Purgatory on earth, I had it when I was fourteen.
Sometimes when the world is falling apart and we are haunted by the question: What is wrong? The real answer is that there is nothing wrong. The necessary storm has finally arrived and it is a good thing too because our falling apart is the only thing that can break down and transform that spoiled, rich, self-centered kid that is inside us all. http://www.ronrolheiser.com/columnarchive/?id=376

September 5 marked the 16th anniversary of the death of Bl. Mother Teresa. The whole world, irrespective of nation, language, religion, keeps talking highly of this great lady. Mother Teresa has been the model of so many Christian virtues. She could also be a great example of one whose world fell apart; but who rebuilt it in a matchless way… Hard to believe that Mother Teresa had tough time in her life? Read on.
A book published in 2007 is titled “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light - The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta (Edited and with Commentary by Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C.) I have not read this book. But I saw some enlightening remarks made by Ron Rolheiser on this book and on Mother Teresa. Once again, I quote him extensively:
A recent book on Mother Teresa, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, makes public a huge volume of her intimate correspondence and in it we see what looks like a very intense, fifty-year, struggle with faith and belief. Again and again, she describes her religious experience as "dry", "empty", "lonely", "torturous", "dark", "devoid of all feeling". During the last half-century of her life, it seems, she was unable to feel or imagine God's existence.
Many people have been confused and upset by this. How can this be? How can this woman, a paradigm of faith, have experienced such doubts? And so some are making that judgment that her faith wasn't real. Their view is that she lived the life of a saint, but died the death of an atheist. What's to be said about all of this? Was Mother Teresa an atheist? Hardly! In a deeper understanding of faith, her doubts and feelings of abandonment are not only explicable, they're predictable.
What Mother Teresa underwent is called "a dark night of the soul." This is what Jesus suffered on the cross when he cried out: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" When he uttered those words, he meant them. At that moment, he felt exactly what Mother Teresa felt so acutely for more than fifty years, namely, the sense that God is absent, that God is dead, that there isn't any God. But this isn't the absence of faith or the absence of God, it is rather a deeper presence of God, a presence which, precisely because it goes beyond feeling and imagination, can only be felt as an emptiness, nothingness, absence, non-existence.
In a remarkable book, The Crucified God, Jurgens Moltmann writes: "Our faith begins at the point where atheists suppose that it must end. Our faith begins with the bleakness and power which is the night of the cross, abandonment, temptation, and doubt about everything that exists! Our faith must be born where it is abandoned by all tangible reality; it must be born of nothingness, it must taste this nothingness and be given it to taste in a way no philosophy of nihilism can imagine."
Mother Teresa understood all of this. That is why her seeming doubt did not lead her away from God and her vocation but instead riveted her to it with a depth and purity that, more than anything else, tell us precisely what faith really is.

I would like to add this note on Mother Teresa here. What she did for most part of her life would have drained any human being of both physical and emotional energy… even spiritual energy. She was dealing with misery, abandonment and suffering 24x365 year after year. Witnessing the darkest side of humanity day after day must have drained out all her energy. Every night she must have asked quite a few questions to God about the misery she was witnessing. If these questions did not arise in her, she was either a robot simply programmed to do charitable works or an angel camouflaged as a human. She was neither. She was simply an ordinary human being with an extraordinary heart. That is why even when her world was totally dark, she brought light to so many thousands. Only a person like Teresa could have gone through hell so long!
This picture of Mother Teresa also brings to mind the Mother of Sorrows. She was standing at the foot of the cross and was witnessing the darkest hour of Christ’s agony when he seemed lost; when he raised the piercing question: My God, why have you forsaken me? (Mt. 27: 46) The Mother must have prayed that her Son would be able to find himself, his God and his home. Her prayers must have been answered, since Jesus found peace in placing himself in his Father’s hands. (Lk. 23: 46)

Let us come back to the younger son feeding the pigs… While feeding the swine, he decided not to be buried in self-pity, but to get up and go back to the father. I have read somewhere that the difference between a saint and us ordinary mortals is that when a saint comes to the end of a rope, he or she makes a knot and hangs on. Jesus did. Mother Teresa did. The Prodigal Son did. We are called to do so!
We pray that through the intercession of the Mother of Sorrows, people all over the world, especially those in Syria who are totally lost, may find themselves, their God and Peace!

Mother Teresa - Come Be My Light" என்ற நூல் வெளியானது.

Disciple… No ‘average Christian’

The Cost of Discipleship

We begin today’s reflections with an anecdote narrated by one of the Presbyterian Ministers: When I was at Duke, Will Willimon was telling our class about a parent who called him one day, very upset, and said, “I hold you personally responsible for this!” It turns out his daughter was going to—in his words—“throw it all away” to go do mission work in Haiti with the Presbyterian Church: “A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke, and she’s going to dig ditches in Haiti!” As the conversation went on, Willimon pointed out that it was actually the parents who had started all of this. They were the ones who had her baptized, who read Bible stories to her, who took her to Sunday School. “You’re the ones who introduced her to Jesus, not me,” he said. And the father said, “But all we ever wanted her to be was a Presbyterian.”

To be a Presbyterian, to be a Roman Catholic, to be a Christian… What does it entail? Being an ‘average Christian’, fulfilling the Sunday obligations, doing some charitable works that does not involve ‘too many risks’? When someone decides not just to follow a Christian Denomination, but Christ Himself, it becomes more challenging. Discipleship was and is always tough. When we listen to Jesus in today’s gospel, we get some idea of what is in store for a true disciple of Jesus.
Luke 14: 25-33
Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'
“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.”

Here is an extract of a sermon titled ‘The Cost of Discipleship’, preached by Dr. Mark E. Hardgrove on this Gospel passage:
Dietrich Bonhoeffer lived in Germany during the regime of Hitler. Bonhoeffer was part of the resistance to the Gestapo, and though he lived in America for a short time and could have avoided persecution, he chose to go back to Germany. He went to encourage others in Germany, especially the church, to refuse to crumble before the despot government ruling the country that he loved. Eventually Bonhoeffer, along with other members of his family, were arrested and placed in concentration camps. While in Tegel Prison Bonhoeffer was a source of encouragement to many other prisoners. Even the guards took a liking to him and they often smuggled out his writings and poems. Eventually, Bonhoeffer was executed at the Flossenburg Concentration Camp on April 9th, 1945, just a few days before it was liberated by the Allies…
I told you all of this to let you know that the man who wrote the book ‘The Cost of Discipleship’ was writing out of experience… Bonhoeffer didn’t just write about this, but he lived and died the truths he believed. He understood the cost of discipleship, he counted those costs, and still he chose to follow Jesus rather than capitulate to the popular political agenda of the time.

A quick, superficial glance at the second part of today’s gospel (verses 28-33) gave me lot of comfort. ‘He who fails to plan, plans to fail’ is a basic tenet of management lessons. Planning a course of action, planning a career is basic common sense. Jesus, after having spoken tough words, really tough words, about discipleship in the first part of the gospel (verses 25-27), suddenly becomes a master in management lessons… lessons in how to plan a building, how to plan a war… This is what made me feel comfortable.
In my comfort zone, I began dreaming of ‘what if’s… We are aware of the popular books ‘If Aristotle Ran General Motors’ and ‘If Harry Potter Ran General Electric’ written by Tom Morris. ‘If Jesus Taught in a Business School’ was the title of my book… To my surprise, in Google search, I came across two books with similar titles: ‘Jesus CEO’ by Laurie Beth Jones (1995), and ‘Jesus Christ: Millionaire, Entrepreneur, CEO’ by John R.Colt Ph.D., (2002). Thinking of Jesus as a CEO, as a professor in a business school was a cute dream!

As I was lost in these dreams, came the PUNCH… The last line of today’s Gospel! It was a KNOCKOUT PUNCH! “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has, cannot be my disciple.”
When I read this last line, I felt as if some logic was missing there. Sometimes in our Sunday liturgy we omit certain verses in our readings. I thought that in today’s Gospel some verses were omitted before this final line. So, I checked. No. Today’s Gospel was Luke 14: 25 to 33 with no omission. The last line simply flowed from the previous lines.
  • Now, what is the big fuss about this last line and calling it a punch etc.?
  • The last line reads this way: “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has, cannot be my disciple.”
  • Yes, I can see that… Jesus always talks about sacrifice, giving up etc… So what?
  • Not so fast, dear Friend. Please read the last line again.
If Jesus had simply said ‘If any of you who does not give up…’ it would have been the usual ‘formula’ of Jesus. But, this sentence begins with ‘In the same way…’ This phrase seems out of place here. But, on deeper reflection, this line seems to be the punch line of the whole Gospel… perhaps, the whole concept about discipleship for me. The KO Punch!

The phrase ‘In the same way…’ set me thinking. In the same… which way?
This is how I rephrase this last line of Jesus… Jesus seems to say: “When one of you wants to build a tower or when one of you goes to war, don’t you sit down and plan every detail? Building a tower occupies your mind day and night, every day… Going to war may occupy not only your days and nights, but precious years of your life. In the same way… IN THE SAME WAY… becoming my disciple should involve you, should occupy your thoughts, words and deeds day and night, every day, ALL YOUR LIFE.” Dear Friends, this is how I interpret the phrase ‘In the same way…’ used by Jesus in the last line of this Gospel passage.
How many, in today’s world have given up sleep, food, family… so many necessities of life in order to reach a position or power. We have surely seen and heard of people who pursued, or who were ‘driven’ by a dream in their life. Perhaps, a ‘worldly’ dream! We have also seen and heard of those who have pursued ‘other-worldly’ dreams… like Bonhoeffer, many other saints – recognised and unrecognised by the Church! This is the real challenge for us… to match the passion and perseverance of those who pursue ‘this worldly’ and ‘other-worldly’ dreams… This is the criterion to become a true disciple!

P.S. By the way, all these reflections on discipleship are meant NOT ONLY to priests and religious. Jesus did not address these words to his disciples when they were alone. The first line of today’s Gospel says: Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said… Yes. This gospel is addressed to the large crowds, to every Christian, to you and me!

Dietrich Bonhoeffer எழுதிய ஓர் அற்புதமான, புகழ் பெற்ற புத்தகத்தின் பெயர் 'The Cost of Discipleship'  அதாவது, 'சீடராவதற்குத் தரவேண்டிய விலை'.

(He who fails to plan, plans to fail)

Jesus’ Manual of dinner etiquettes

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Food is a basic necessity of any human being… in fact, of any living organism. Taking food in a group is a human activity as well as that of animals. Poor trees and plants… They have to simply stand rooted in a spot and take their food all alone… from the ground and the sun. Unfortunately, human beings are imitating trees and plants, taking food standing all alone in this fast food age. When talking of food being taken in groups, I cannot but think of how families these days are losing the habit of sitting down and eating together. We are aware of the famous axiom ‘A family that prays together, stays together.’ The present day world would call for a similar axiom that says: A family that dines together shines together… or, something like that. Even when a family decides to eat at a prescribed time, most often these times are determined by the programmes on the TV. I know of families and religious communities that sit in front of the TV, eating their supper ‘together’, not even aware of what they are eating, since their eyes and minds are devouring the TV programmes. Such trends are a guarantee that our medical bills will double or triple!

Talking of taking food in groups also calls our attention to formal dinners. The richer the dinner, the more complicated the rituals! As a Priest, I have been invited to many dinners. Whenever I attended formal dinners, I have been all the time on my guard, trying to do things according to rituals. Whenever I returned from such dinners my stomach was half empty and my heart… quite empty. In sharp contrast, I have enjoyed the simple, shared food in poor families without the additional burden of rituals. I returned from these meals, more ‘filled’ in every way!

Is this a Sunday homily or a lesson on how to conduct a dinner or conduct ourselves in a dinner? The Gospel today (Luke 14: 1,7-14) talks of Jesus being invited to a dinner by a Pharisee who happened to be a ruler on a Sabbath Day! (Pharisee + Ruler + Sabbath … the picture gets more complicated, meaning… ritualistic!) Instead of simply attending the dinner, Jesus begins teaching them some ‘strange’ lessons as to how to conduct a dinner and how to attend a dinner. I call these lessons ‘strange’, because they were not done that way among the Jews.
A Jewish dinner would have quite a few rituals to be followed… the ritual of washing before entering the house, the ritual of wishing one another, rituals before, during and after the meal… This being a Sabbath, there would have been extra rituals, perhaps. Was Jesus familiar with all these rituals? Not having been trained as a Pharisee and not caring for empty rituals all his life, Jesus would not have followed the required rituals minutely. To make things more complicated, the Gospel says that Jesus was being watched! Here are the opening words of today’s Gospel: One Sabbath when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. (Luke 14: 1)

Jesus was not a stranger to being watched or gazed at. He has always been surrounded by common people who paid close attention to all he said and all he did. That was the adoring gaze of the poor people and Jesus, perhaps, would have enjoyed that attention. Now, the gaze of the Pharisees would have been more discomforting to Jesus.
I put myself in the place of Jesus. If I am being watched at a dinner, I would like to hide from the gaze of those people. I would be extra careful not to make a mistake. I would like to escape from the dinner scene as quickly as possible. Jesus was quite different. When surrounded by those scrutinising Pharisees, he taught them a few things that were ‘more proper’ than the rituals they had in their minds. He gave a very practical advice to those who were seeking the first place.
Luke 14: 7- 11
Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the places of honour, saying to them, "When you are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honour, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Jesus’ lesson in humility can easily be misinterpreted. I imagine myself entering a banquet hall. The words of Jesus ring in my heart… Go and sit in the lowest place So, I choose the last place wishing that the host sees me and takes me to the higher place. Dinner begins. The host comes around wishing everyone. As he comes close to me I am waiting to hear him say: “Oh, Father, why are you here? Come up higher…” But… to my great disappointment, nothing like that happens. He comes, greets me and… and… moves on. No invitation to move up. All my efforts at humility are wasted. Surely Jesus did not talk of this type of humility.

Jesus then turned to the host and gave him another lesson. Usually a formal dinner is loaded with calculations. On the part of the host, there are calculations in terms of whom to invite, who takes which seat of honour, how many types of liquor to serve, how many dishes… etc. etc… On the part of the guests, there are calculations as to what to wear for this occasion, what presents to take, how much to eat, whom to meet and whom to avoid… etc. etc… The more the calculations, the more artificial the dinner!
In some other dinners, like the one given by Herod, when liquor overflows, lines of decency and civilization get erased. Some twisted, perverted thinking creeps in… all in the name of enjoying a dinner. The result? The head of John the Baptist on a platter! (Dear Friends, August 29, last Thursday, we remembered the beheading of John the Baptist. It is a pity that such a noble person like John the Baptist had to be killed for such silly reasons… namely, the promises blurted out by the intoxicated Herod during a dinner!) Whenever Jesus attended a ‘big’ dinner, this dinner-tragedy must have haunted him.

In contrast to those artificial dinners, those excesses of dinner parties, Jesus taught them and still teaches us as to how a real dinner should be conducted…
Luke 14: 12-14
Jesus said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbours, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."
