Decision, to move mountains…

The Power of ONE - Dashrath Manjhi
On August 21, last Friday, the film, “Manjhi – The Mountain Man” was released. It is a biopic of a man called Dashrath Manjhi, a poor labourer from the state of Bihar. This film is getting quite a bit of media attention right now. It may also get some awards. But, the person on whom this film is based, has left this world without any recognition or reward.

The following is a write-up from www.thebetterindia.com on Dashrath Manjhi:
This is the story of an ordinary man. This is the story of Dashrath Manjhi: the man who moved a mountain, so that his people could reach a doctor in time.
It was 1960. Landless laborers, the Musahars, lived amid rocky terrain in the remote Atri block of Gaya, Bihar, in northern India. In the community of Gehlour, they were regarded the lowest of the low in a caste-ridden society, and denied the basics: water supply, electricity, a school, a medical center. A 300-foot tall mountain loomed between them and all the basic facilities that they had always longed for.

Like all the Musahar men, Dashrath Manjhi worked on the other side of the mountain. At noon, his wife Phaguni would bring his lunch. He would watch and wait for Phaguni. That day, she would come to him empty handed, injured. As the harsh sun beat down, Phaguni tripped on loose rock, and was badly injured. Her water pot shattered. She slid down several feet, injuring her leg. Hours past noon, she limped to her husband. He was angry at her for being late. But on seeing her tears, he made a decision. He decided that he was not going to wait for anyone to solve his problems, he was going to do-it-himself.

Dashrath bought a hammer, chisel, and crowbar. He had to sell his goats, which meant a lower income for his family. He climbed to the top, and started chipping away at the mountain. Years later, he would recount, “That mountain had shattered so many pots and claimed so many lives. I could not bear that it had hurt my wife. If it took all my life now, I would carve us a road through the mountain.”

He would start early in the morning, chip the mountain for a few hours, then work on the fields, and come back to work on the mountain again. He would hardly sleep. The villagers gradually began to respect him, and started donating food to his family. He eventually quit his wage job, and started spending as much time as he could, breaking the mountain.

Then, Phaguni fell ill. The doctor was in Wazirganj, which stood just on the other side of the mountain, but the road leading to it was 75 kilometers long. Unable to make the journey, she passed away. Her death not only enraged him more, it spurred him on.

It was not an easy task. He would often get hurt by the rocks falling from the unyielding mountain. He would rest and then start again. After 10 years, as Manjhi chipped away, people saw a cleft in the mountain and some came to help. Manjhi broke through that last thin wall of rock, and walked into the other side of the mountain. After 22 years, Dashrath Das Manjhi, the common man, the landless laborer, had broken the mountain: he had carved out a road 360 feet long, 30 feet wide. Wazirganj, with its doctors, jobs, and school, was now only 5 kilometers away. People from 60 villages in Atri could use his road. Children had to walk only 3 kilometers to reach school. Grateful, they began to call him ‘Baba’, the revered man.

But Dashrath did not stop there. He began knocking on the Government’s doors, asking for the road to be tarred and connected to the main road. He did the unthinkable to get the government’s attention. He walked along the railway line all the way to New Delhi, the capital. He submitted a petition there, for his road, for a hospital for his people, a school and water. In July 2006, Dashrath went to the then Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Junta Durbar’. The minister, overwhelmed, got up and offered ‘Baba’ his chair, his minister’s seat; a rare honor for a man of Manjhi’s social status.

The government rewarded his efforts with a plot of land; Manjhi promptly donated the land back for a hospital. They also nominated him for the ‘Padma Shree’, but the forest ministry officials fought the nomination, calling his work illegal. “I do not care for these awards, this fame, the money,” he said. “All I want is a road, a school, and a hospital for our people. They toil so hard. It will help their women and children.” It would take the government 30 years more to tar the road. On August 17, 2007, Dashrath Manjhi, the man who had conquered a mountain lost his battle with cancer. All his life – spanning 73 years – he had toiled for his people and for no personal gain.

“I started this work out of love for my wife, but continued it for my people. If I did not, no one would,” Manjhi’s words reflect the reality of India and many other poor countries, where people expect the government to make decisions for them. If only each of us decide to do something – big or small – to change our present condition… this world would become a far better place!

I am speaking of Dashrath Manjhi at such length for two reasons:
Reason 1:  This is my way of paying respect to this noble person. We are sadly aware that the title ‘Padma Shree’ was denied to him, since he broke through a mountain without the government permission. After his death, the politicians from Bihar were making suggestions that he could be considered for ‘Bharat Ratna’. In case, the Indian Government decides to honour him with this title (which is very unlikely), it would be a true honour to the title rather than to Shri Manjhi. Whether the Government decides to honour him with titles or not, I am certain, that Shri Manjhi is already revered in the hearts of thousands of persons all over the world. My first reason is, therefore, to add to the number of persons paying respect to Shri Manjhi – from among you!

Reason 2: Dashrath Manjhi gives us a lesson in one of the basic human capacity – the capacity to decide! Decision making is one of the features of this Sunday’s liturgical readings.

Today’s readings talk about Joshua and Simon Peter making decisions under difficult circumstances. “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24: 15) was the decision of Joshua. When he speaks of his house, it can be taken as not only his close family but also his kith and kin… and even his domestic employees! In the Gospel of John, Simon Peter makes a similar decision for the twelve disciples when Jesus asks the poignant question: “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him in one of the oft-quoted Bible verses: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6: 68-69) Peter spoke on behalf of his friends!

Two aspects of these decisions struck me. The first aspect is the ‘collective’ tone of the decision. Both Joshua and Peter make use of the ‘we’ word! They were speaking on behalf of the whole group. The word ‘we’ seems to be receding from our vocabulary in subtle ways. I wish we become aware of this trend and take the necessary precautions. When crucial decisions have to be made in families, collective responsibility seems to take the backseat.
When an individual speaks for the group, we can assume that that person has a good knowledge of the group and has gained the confidence of the group as well. Such healthy knowledge and trust will be a great help in families, especially when they are going through tough times.

The second aspect of these decisions is the tough situation in which they were made. When life moves smoothly, there is hardly any need for decisions. Even if there are a few tiny decisions to be made, they can be made easily. It is during times of crisis that we need to make major decisions – as in the case of Joshua, Peter and … Manjhi.

Let me close these reflections with an email I received long time back. It contained photographs with the title: Pictures to Help You Restore Your Faith In Humanity.
All the photographs were packed with positive energy. These pictures depicted small or big decisions – acts of kindness – performed by individuals for those in need. There was the picture of a person who removes his sandals and gives it to a poor girl who is bare-footed, and this takes place on the pavement on a hot, sunny day (presumably).
Another picture showed a young girl holding an umbrella over an older man unable to walk and crawling on a wooden board to cross the road in drenching rain… There were quite a few people on the road witnessing this, which meant that only the young girl took the decision to help the older person.

Two pictures in this collection, touched me deeply. They depicted how decision and dedication go hand in hand as in the case of Shri Dashrath Manjhi. The first picture showed a 97 years old woman, who is bent almost double by hunchback, feeding a man lying on a cot. When I read the caption for this picture, I choked… A mother (97 years old) in China, feeding and taking care of her paralysed son (60 years old) everyday for more than 19 years. A reminder of the amazing spirit of human compassion and, more importantly, motherly love. The mother could have decided to send her son to the care centre, especially when she herself required assistance. But, she had taken a decision and followed it with dedication for more than 19 years!

Another picture in this collection that tugged at my heart was taken in a hospital. It showed a young father and a mother kissing goodbye to their dying child, while the hospital staff stand around the bed and pay their respects. The caption written under the picture, once again, moistened my eyes…
A father and mother kissing their dying little girl goodbye. If you are wondering why all the medic people are bowing: in less than an hour, two small children in the next room will be able to live, thanks to the little girl's kidney and liver.

All of us keep taking decisions in life – big, small, crucial, casual, tough, easy… At this moment, we pray especially for those who are at crossroads in their lives – in terms of making proper decisions on job, life-partner, way of life etc. May Dashrath Manjhi, the 97 years old Mom, the young parents of the dying child, as well as Joshua and Simon Peter help us make the right decisions! Human-centred decisions relying on God!

For those of you who are interested, here is another story of a noble lady from West Bengal, who decided to turn her tragic experience towards helping others – as in the case of Shri Dashrath Manjhi:

Subhasini Mistry is the founder of the ‘Humanity Hospital’ in Hanspukur, West Bengal – a hospital dedicated to the poor. I came to know of this lady through an email sent by one of my friends with the title: ‘A hospital story’. While searching more on this lady, I came across the other article in the Weekend Leader written by Anita Pratap – ‘Humanity Hospital was built by a woman whose husband died for want of medical help’ (24 Aug 2012)
Subhasini herself made a decision about forty years back when she lost her husband due to medical negligence. Through her tears and fears, Subhasini made an oath that fateful day. No one should suffer her fate. Basic medical attention could easily have saved her husband who had nothing more than a bout of gastro enteritis. But poverty and callous hospital staff had killed her husband. She vowed she would do what it takes to spare people of this nightmare. She would build a hospital for the poor. (Anita Pratap)
When people heard of her decision, they laughed at her. But she was determined. She made her son Ajoy pursue medicine. In 1993, the foundation stone for the Humanity Hospital was laid… The rest is history! How did she achieve all this? She says: “Inner Strength.” She adds with rustic wisdom: “God in his infinite grace gave me a vision at the darkest moment in my life. From then on, my life had a purpose. I used whatever strength God gave me to make sure other poor people did not lose their loved ones for lack of medical attention.” (Anita Pratap)

Subhasini Mistry and the Humanity Hospital

Change from within…

Eat my Flesh and drink my Blood
20th Sunday of Ordinary Time – Justice Sunday
“Do you ever have one of those mornings, when you just can't be bothered to put your legs on?” When I read that line, I was literally jolted… Have I ever given a thought to my legs when I got up from bed? Very, very rarely… How much have I taken life for granted! Giles Duley, the person who has posed this question, is the focus of this Sunday’s reflection.

In India, the Sunday following the Independence Day (August 15), is observed as Justice Sunday. Hence, today, August 16th, we shall focus our thoughts on Justice. When I listened to Giles Duley on Ted.com, I felt as if I was listening to a homily shared for this specific Sunday – Justice Sunday. Before going to his talk, let’s get introduced to Giles.

Giles Duley was a fashion photographer who, some years ago, got tired of celebrity photoshoots and the attendant egos and tantrums that often accompanied them. He flung his camera on the photoshoot bed and it bounced out the window into the streets of SoHo, London. At that point he decided to change course and dedicated himself to using his camera to "tell unheard stories of those caught in conflict and economic hardship around the world." His work took him to Sudan, Angola, Ukraine and Bangladesh, among other places. Early in 2011, on assignment in Afghanistan, Giles stepped on a landmine. Despite the fact that the horrific accident left Giles a triple amputee, he continues to dedicate his life to telling stories through photography.

Two turning points in Giles Duley’s life… one, when his camera leapt out of the window and two, when he stepped on the landmine in Afghanistan. The first one – losing his camera –  changed him from seeing the artificial world of glamour through the eyes of the camera, to seeing the real world with his own eyes. The second one – losing his limbs – transformed him into a living witness of the ravages of war. Let me try and share some of the lines he had spoken at TEDxObserver. The title of the programme is… Giles Duley: When a reporter becomes the story:

He begins his talk by saying, “I spent the last forty years hiding behind a camera, so I didn’t have to speak…” He then goes on to speak about three stories that have inspired him and his assignment in Afghanistan in Februray, 2011. “In Afghanistan I became part of the story… I never set out to Congo, to Angola, to Bangladesh to take photographs; I went to those places because I wanted to make some changes and photography was my tool. Then I became aware that my body was in many ways a living example of what war does to somebody. I could use my own experience, my own body to tell that story… The stories I had documented have given me the courage to get back on my new legs and come here to tell you their stories and my own story.”

Then Giles shows a slide where his broken body is depicted in typical fashion photography style and then he goes on to say: “It’s a self-portrait, because I wanted to tell what a bomb does to somebody, but also to show… that losing your limbs doesn’t end your life; that you can have what people say disability, but not be disabled; that you can be able to do anything if you put your mind to it and a belief in it. It is strange that when I look back the past one year, I realise that I have a lot of things now, I didn’t have then.”

The closing thoughts of his talk gripped me… “Ten years ago when I sat down to work out what I could do to make a difference in this world, I realised that my photography was a tool and a way to do it. That’s what is really the key – that we all be part of that wheel… to be cogs in the wheel of change. We can all make a difference. Everybody has an ability to use something to make a difference to the world. We can all sit in front of TV and go… ‘I don’t know what to do about it’ and forget about it. The reality is that we can all do something. It might be just writing a letter. It might be standing on a soap box and talking… but every single one of us here, if we want to make a difference, we can and there is nothing to stop us…”

Change and transformation are key to social justice. All of us would agree that if Justice is to be established, the human family needs to undergo lots of changes - very fundamental, radical changes. But, we disagree on where this change should begin… Should it begin within or without? Many of us will have a long list of changes that need to take place in the world - a change in the government, a change in the mindset of the rich, a change in the caste or class structure, a change in this, a change in that etc. These changes, we believe, would bring about Justice. But, we forget that unjust tendencies that are nurtured within each of us is THE cause of our unjust society. So, changes need to begin from within.

Changes in the government, and social structure, which are not accompanied by changes from within, can only be a ‘band-aid’ solution. When the human family is hurt by injustice, it is easy and quick to stick a band-aid without trying to heal the wound. The wound of social injustice is a festering wound that needs a much radical (in the literal sense of the word – namely, getting to the roots) treatment than a mere band-aid. Such a treatment is given by Jesus in today’s Gospel (John 6: 51-58) to the people who came looking for him.

The Israelites had tasted the miraculous feeding accomplished by Jesus. It was not merely an experience that filled their stomach, but also their hearts, since they witnessed a dinner where everyone was treated as equal. They came searching for Jesus, the miracle worker, who can fulfill not only their physical need, but also the social need of equality. Knowing their ‘hidden agenda’, Jesus challenged them to become ‘givers’ rather than mere ‘receivers’. He kept repeating to them that he was willing to give himself and invited them to do so.

Let me close my reflection with a short passage from my favourite writer – Fr Ron Rolheiser: When the chaos that lies within the recesses of our private lives remains untouched and untamed, it will remain untouched and untamable in the world at large. As long as the demons and chaos within our hearts lie untouched and untamed, our social action is not worthy to be called spirituality. It is merely political action, nothing more. It is power doing battle with power. Ultimately it will be successful or unsuccessful on the basis of the Machiavellian principle of “might is right.”  The kingdom of God does not work by this kind of power. It works by conversion. Conversion, in the final analysis, is an eminently personal act.

(“Do you ever have one of those mornings, when you just can't be bothered to put your legs on?” – Giles Duley)

May the paper cranes fly

I am the Bread of Life

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
A few years back I saw a short video featuring two panthers and a stag. The moment I mentioned ‘two panthers and a stag’, many of us may have already decided the outcome of this feature – namely, the panthers would have hunted down the stag and torn it to pieces. No… a BIG NO… The panthers and the stag were playing with one another like little children. The only thing missing was the innocent giggle of the children. At the end of this short video, the following lines appeared on the screen: “When animals are not hungry, there is no violence. Why then humans resort to violence for no reason at all?”
This question seems to bind together hunger and violence. We must acknowledge that there is no easy answer to the question: ‘Why human violence?’ In the last few years we have seen an uncontrolled and indiscriminate outburst of violence which has not spared even innocent children.
70 years back such an atrocious, indiscriminate violence was unleashed on Japan by the U.S. Government. This Sunday, coinciding with August 9, the day when the U.S. dropped the second atomic bomb over Nagasaki, (the first one was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6), our thoughts, naturally, revisit this atrocity unleashed on human beings by human beings.

I feel that the question that appears at the end of the short video, linking hunger and violence, actually does injustice to the animal kingdom. The word ‘violence’ cannot be associated with animals. When they kill other animals to satisfy their hunger, we cannot term that killing as ‘violence’. The term ‘violence’ belongs to the human species and our violence erupts due to the different forms of hunger we suffer from.

For the past three weeks, our Sunday reflections revolve around the 6th chapter of St John. All the three Sundays relate a few biblical events dealing with hunger and feeding. Although these readings talk of the physical hunger of individuals and people, when one goes deeper into the passages, we can see other forms of hunger that we humans suffer from and the consequences of such hungers!
For instance, today’s first reading, taken from I Kings, 19:4-8, talks of the Prophet Elijah, praying to God in the wilderness for his death and the angel of the Lord visiting him with food. On the surface, this looks like an incident of a hungry man being fed by the angel. But, on a deeper analysis, we begin to wonder why Elijah was in the wilderness and why did he pray for his death. The answer to these questions reveals to us the hunger for revenge nursed by a queen. Prophet Elijah was running away from queen Jezebel who was hungry to devour the prophet, since he had interfered with her ‘god’ - Baal. Elijah had proved to King Ahab that Baal, brought into Israel by Jezebel, was a false god.

Creating and worshipping false gods (like power, money etc.) is an insatiable hunger for some human beings. Those who have the courage to tear down the façade of such false gods are put to death. That was the story of Jezebel and Elijah. God intercepted Elijah’s wishful trip to death and gives him enough strength to carry on his mission of demolishing false gods. Strengthened by the nourishment from the angel, Elijah continued his struggle with the worldly powers, sheltering and worshipping false gods!

When I read this incident, my mind thought of many other struggles taken up by people against false gods and worldly powers. The recent news from Tamil Nadu is one such struggle taken up by the people against the government. It is so heartening to see that common people, especially the youth, are at the forefront in spearheading this struggle demanding that the government close down liquor shops in Tamil Nadu. It is a pity that the political leaders are trying to highjack this meaningful struggle with their meaningless accusations of one another. We are happy to see that the Bishops of Tamil Nadu have also voiced their opinion in support of the struggle of the people. We pray that the Government of Tamil Nadu listens to the painful cry of the people trying to tell the hard truth that liquor is a false god and its worship by the government is not justified at any cost!

Listening to the truth is, perhaps, one of the hardest challenges for human beings. It requires a noble mind to swallow the bitter pill of truth. More often, when a bitter ‘truth-pill’ is given, one tends to spit it out and, get angry with the one who provided the ‘truth pill’. This is the scene described in today’s Gospel – John 6: 41-51.
The opening lines of today’s gospel give us enough food for thought:
John 6: 41-43
The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, ‘I am the bread which came down from heaven’. And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, “Murmur not among yourselves”.

Let us back track a little bit. People in thousands followed Jesus to the desert to listen to him. Jesus had pity on them and fed them with five loaves and two fish. (Gospel on July 26) Having seen an easy way to fill their stomach, they followed Jesus to the next spot. Jesus, if he were an ordinary ‘fame hungry’ or ‘power hungry’ person, he would have performed miracles to keep the people always following him, singing ‘hosanna’. But, Jesus was different. He did not hesitate to tell them the hard truth:
John 6: 26-27
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life” (Gospel on August 2)

This was indeed a bitter pill to swallow. Sometimes, when faced with bitter truths, some tend to resort to a defence tactics – namely, trying to find loop holes in not ‘what is said’ but ‘who said it’. This is what happened to Jesus when he invited the people to a higher plane of getting nourished by the person of Jesus. The Jews (namely, the religious leaders) began attacking the person of Jesus rather than what he said. Jesus does not buckle down under this attack, but continues to invite them to a share of his life – eternal life! We shall continue this incident from Chapter 6 of St John’s gospel for another two weeks to come. For the time being, we shall leave this conversation at this point and turn our attention to August 9.

On August 9, 1945, the second atom bomb was dropped in Nagasaki. More than 240,000 innocent civilians were killed by the two atomic bombs. Half this number died on the day or in a few days later. But the other half had suffered for years and died a slow death. One of them is Sadako Sasaki. Here is an extract on Sadako as given in http://www.cnduk.org
Sadako Sasaki’s Cranes for Peace
Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Ten years later, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and informed that she had only one year to live.
Sadako’s friends reminded her of a Japanese legend: that if you make a thousand paper cranes, you get one wish. Sadako spent the remainder of her life folding paper cranes – but had only reached 644 when she died. After her death, her friends continued making her paper cranes, and raised the money to build a monument in her honour.
Now, children from all over the world fold paper cranes to be placed beneath her statue in commemoration of the atrocities suffered in Hiroshima.

We are aware that paper cranes don’t fly. But the dreams and desires of thousands of children who made those paper cranes can fly beyond human made boundaries and create a world without war. May Sadako and millions of children, killed in senseless wars, plead before the throne of God to bring lasting peace to our war-torn planet. May the paper cranes fly high!
