"Faster, Higher, Stronger" and NOBLER

Olympic Motto

XXX Summer Olympics – London 2012 is getting over this Sunday, August 12. One can easily see that Olympics is no more a simple sports event. It is a media event. And, as happens always in the media, it is more interested in feeding us with drama than sports. For this drama to happen, the media wants to write a script. What better script to write than create a protagonist and an antagonist… the hero and the villain in every event. The fight between good and evil. Such a script constantly brings to focus that Olympics is all about CONFLICT, and COMPETITION.
This is a far cry from the well known Olympic Motto: “The most important thing is not to win but to take part!” This motto was introduced by Pierre de Coubertin, who is the founder of the International Olympic Committee, and is considered the father of the modern Olympic Games. It is said that De Coubertin got this motto from a sermon by the Bishop of Pennsylvania during the 1908 London Games.
Of course, the media would quote another motto of the Olympics – namely, “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, which is Latin for “Faster, Higher, Stronger”. This motto, once again, was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. Comparative terms in English imply competition. But, on a deeper analysis, one can interpret ‘faster, higher, stronger’ in terms of oneself rather than as against someone else. I can be faster than what I was yesterday. I can also be faster than XY and Z. If only Olympics can make us better persons… better in the sense… better than what we were yesterday, and not better than so and so!!!
Comparisons between athletes reach its climax at the medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze. Gold is the summit of achievement. What about Silver and Bronze? Those who win these medals are looked upon… not as winner of Silver and Bronze, but losers of Gold. This is a pity! Especially after the invasion of the television into the Olympics arena, winners of Gold are given undue media attention and the winners of Silver and Bronze are ‘accommodated’.

Tony Rossi is a writer for the website: Christopher Closeup. He has written quite a few articles on the sports persons – past and present. On July 31, 2012 he wrote an article on former gymnast Shawn Johnson who won a gold medal and three silver medals in Beijing Olympics 2008. Here are some excerpts from that article titled: Former Olympic Gymnast Shawn Johnson on Being a Winner in God’s Eyes vs. the World’s Eyes
One of the most aggravating aspects of the Olympics to me is when reporters treat silver medallists like losers – as if being the second best athlete in your field in THE ENTIRE WORLD is somehow something to hang your head about. In her engaging and enjoyable new memoir “Winning Balance”(co-written with Nancy Anderson French), former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson reveals she had a hard time with that attitude herself. In fact, she was shocked by it.
During the individual all-around competition at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, both Shawn and her friend/teammate, Nastia Liukin, were expected to be in a tight competition for the gold medal. That’s exactly what happened. Their scores were close throughout most of the competition in which they had to compete in fourcategories: vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises. After the balance beam, however, Shawn saw from the scoreboard that it was mathematically impossible for her to beat Nastia.
A little dispirited because there had been such an emphasis on her winning gold, Shawn briefly questioned whether she should just give up. She quickly realized that failure – and that’s exactly what giving up would be: failure – was not an option. Recalling the moment, Shawn writes, “I was still determined to give this performance my entireheart and soul, but my motivation had changed. In some strange way, once I knew the gold was out of reach, I was free to go out there and just be me, the natural competitor who nonetheless had stuck with gymnastics since age three for the pure joy of the sport. I would show the world what I could do while having fun doing it.”
And so she did. Shawn earned the silver medal in the all-around, while Nastia won the gold. For the first time ever, Americans had won the top two spots in this competition. Ever a model of class and dignity, Shawn was genuinely happy for Nastia and also satisfied with her own performance. Until the reporters stepped in.
Instead of asking how great it felt to win silver, they asked Shawn how it felt to lose. The happy young gymnast was surprised and disheartened. With the negative focus of the questions aimed at her, she admits to fighting to hold back tears. In retrospect, however, that experience became a defining moment. Even though she went on to win a total of three silver medals (in Team, Floor, and All Around) and one gold (in Balance Beam), it was the silver in the all-around that taught her the greatest life lesson.
During an interview on Christopher Closeup, Shawn told me, “I honestly was more proud of my silver medals than the gold or any other for that matter. Going into the all-around competition, it was my event. It’s what I worked my entire life for. And there’s something sad about being given a silver, and having the world think that you aren’t worth the attention. It makes you find the pride for the work and success within yourself. To me, that made me the strongest and most proud person I could have been.” http://www.patheos.com/blogs/christophers/

It is ironic that although Shawn Johnson says that she is more proud of her silver medals than the gold, the book ‘Winning Balance’ introduces her as ‘Olympic Gold Medalist’ on the front cover!!! I guess we cannot easily get over our craze for gold!!!

Winning Gold, Silver and Bronze may be easier than ‘Winning Balance’ in life. Here is an anecdote about another athlete who had won this inner peace and balance and then went on to win Gold in both 100 and 200 meters race in the 1972, Munich Olympics… This Olympics will remain as the games which got sadly mixed up with politics… politics that always feeds on ‘better-than-thou’ competition. We are referring to the massacre of the athletes from Israel during Munich Olympics!
At this Olympics, the Ukrainian Valeriy Borzov won the 100m and 200m double as an athlete from the U.S.S.R. In an interview recorded after his victories, Borzov revealed the favourite training exercise of his first coach, Boris Voitas.
We made paper tubes and Voitas would order us to run 100m holding them in our teeth. The one who did not bite or squeeze the tube was considered a sprinter. The rest were considered to be simply runners. This helped me develop the main quality of a sprinter – the ability to relax.
Tension inhibits speed. The moment a sprinter starts to worry about what the man next to him is doing, his muscles tighten and he starts to slow down.
When the American athletes were making disparaging remarks against Borzov winning the medals, such taunts did not bother Borzov. For, he had one quality that made him an all-time great – he was super cool. The sprinter never cared about the big names of sprint. In an interview to a television channel shortly after his 1972 golden moment, he said, “My only opponent is the stopwatch.”

This statement of Borzov can be seen as spoken by a very haughty person or by a person who is more focussed. I prefer to see the latter.

One of my favourite sports persons is Roger Federer. His style of playing has often been compared to ballet dancing. One can easily sense that he enjoys playing tennis rather than overly preoccupied with defeating the opponent. Rosyln Sulcas, the writer who covers dance for The New York Times, once wrote about Federer’s way of playing tennis in The Times’s Tennis blog:
“I’ve always thought of Roger Federer as the Baryshnikov of dance, possessing a similar ability to apparently bend time to his will as he executes the most difficult of physical feats -– and to do it with both grace and clarity, making it look not just easy but inevitable.”

Truly great sports persons can teach us a good lesson about life… We need to live life to the fullest trying to make ourselves better than what we were yesterday, and not better than another person. This way of living makes us enjoy what we are doing. If success comes, then we take it thankfully. If there are no medals, we are still happy that we did the job to our heart’s content!
“The most important thing is not to win but to take part!” in LIFE…

We trust in… Atomic Energy

Atomic Bomb Paper

Every year, at the beginning of the month of August haunting memories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki flood our memory. The gory details of this human massacre are well-known. So, let us not go over those statistics. They can only feed our curiosity. Has Hiroshima and Nagasaki become only museum pieces to be visited once a year or, are they schools where we can learn a lesson or two?
I am afraid that even Japan is treating this tragedy as a ‘treasured museum piece’. Why do I say this? If Japan had treated Hiroshima and Nagasaki as schools, then Fukushima would not have happened. After Fukushima nuclear threat, Japan began to close down its atomic plants one by one. I was so happy about it that I announced this news in Vatican Radio with full gusto. Unfortunately, my happiness was short-lived. Japan has begun reopening its atomic stations once again!
Sadly, Japan as well as the whole world is madly… MADLY… in love with nuclear energy still. On a day like this, we need to focus on our tragic romance with nuclear energy. The cenotaph at the Hiroshima Peace Park is inscribed with an ambiguous sentence: "Let all the souls here rest in peace; this mistake shall not be repeated." (Wikipedia) But from Hiroshima to Fukushima nuclear mistakes have been repeated – all over the world! This begins our reflections…

Why are mistakes repeated? There could be hundred of reasons. But, I wish to focus on two of them. The first is… when mistakes are covered up with falsehood and made to look like the right thing, they tend to be repeated. The mistake of the U.S. was well covered up. Delayed information, distorted information, downright lies accompanied the dropping of the atomic bombs. As I was going through many details of this historic tragedy, something struck me hard. When the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, it was 8.15 a.m. on August 6th. It was still night in most of the U.S. and the people there were asleep. One can see that this nation is still struggling to wake up from this sleep and find out the real truth. Here is a news item to illustrate this:
New York: Pax Christi commemoration of Hiroshima & Nagasaki
Posted: Monday, July 30, 2012 9:41 pm
Pax Christi Metro New York is hosting 'Nuclear Lies, Nuclear Truths' a lecture, silent procession, prayers and discussion to mark the 57th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki this Sunday 5 August.
In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a few thoughtful Americans questioned the morality of the bombings. Alarmed by those questions, men such as Conant, Bundy, and Stimson went about creating an explanation of why atomic bombs were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That explanation has been widely accepted; however, the vast majority of historians who have studied the matter since then believe that the story told by men like Conant, Bundy, and
Stimson—and later by Truman—was profoundly misleading.
"As part of a Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial, David Harrington Watt, a member of the Religious
Society of Friends (the Quakers) and a Professor of History at Temple University, will address this controversy.
Leila Zand, an Iranian-American who lived in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war, the Iranian reconstruction period following the war, and the Iranian reform years, and who now serves as
Civilian Diplomacy and Middle East Program Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, will follow with a look at today’s controversy regarding 'Militarization of the Middle East: Iran-US Relations.'

Dear friends, I have quoted extensively from this news item to show that at least some conscientious persons are still trying to learn from history so that we don’t repeat it. I was also equally impressed with the stand of the Christians in the U.S. soon after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1946, a report by the Federal Council of Churches entitled Atomic Warfare and the Christian Faith, includes the following passage:
"As American Christians, we are deeply penitent for the irresponsible use already made of the atomic bomb. We are agreed that, whatever be one's judgment of the war in principle, the surprise bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are morally indefensible." (Wikipedia)
When we mistakes are not covered up in lies, we can surely learn from those mistakes, since truth will always set us free. But, unfortunately, every government in the world is dishing out lies as far as nuclear warheads are concerned. As if the threat of nuclear warheads is not enough, every country is moving towards nuclear plants. On this front as well lots of lies have been told about the safety of a nuclear plant and about the different accidents that have happened in nuclear plants. Hence, here is my simple (you may call this ‘simplistic’) conclusion: Nuclear energy can thrive in the seedbed of lies!
If you wish to read more truth, kindly read the news feature: HIROSHIMA, NAGASAKI BOMBINGS WERE AVOIDABLE by David Krieger, President, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. (IDN-InDepthNews – August 3, 2012)

Why are we so madly in love with nuclear energy? Is there no other alternative? I am not a scientist and hence my answer to this question cannot be scientific. But I am a believer. My belief says that our world can survive, in fact, flourish in safer environment if we depend on other natural sources of energy – wind, water, sunlight… My belief says that the universe is designed in such a way that it can sustain itself when we are able to tap the sources appropriately. The catch words are: tap and appropriately… Unfortunately, our present generation has not tapped natural sources of energy but has exploited them indiscriminately!
Our natural sources of energy can surely sustain the whole of humanity, provided we decide to satisfy our needs and not our desires… our unbridled desires of accumulation. Our mad passion for self above everything else has created more demands on our resources. Since nature could not satisfy our mad rush for more and MORE… we looked for artificial sources of energy. Look, where we have landed up… We have landed on a planet that is waiting to explode any time.

God the Father has a simple solution to offer in the first reading today: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not.” (Exodus 16: 4) Gather only what is needed for the day and not more. Only on the sixth day they were allowed to gather for two days. We see later in this chapter that there were people who did not obey this instruction and gathered more. These were the ancestors of some of the world leaders today who have accumulated mind boggling amount of wealth. Will they carry this beyond their graves?
And the people of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less... He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat. And Moses said to them, "Let no man leave any of it till the morning." But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. (Ex. 16: 17-21)

In the gospel today Jesus gives another simple solution to those who came seeking him ‘not because they saw signs, but because they ate their fill of the loaves’. Jesus could see that they were seeking a short cut to fulfil their desires. He too offers another solution in the very next line : “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal.” (John 6: 26-27)
The solutions given in both these readings sound extremely simple. We can give them a try. Otherwise, we need to build more temples (nuclear plants) to worship nuclear energy!

Sharing is our Security

The Olympic rings are lit with pyrotechnics during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics on July 27, 2012. DAVID GOLDMAN / AP

30th Summer Olympics began in London on Friday with a great opening spectacle. The Royal Wedding, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth and now the Olympics… Britain seems to be in the lime-light with good shows. But, beneath all these external pomp and glory, every one of these events must have kept the British government on pins and needles to make sure of the security measures. As one may remember, London won the vote to conduct the 2012 Olympics on July 6, 2005. The very next day July 7 (known as 7/7) there were four bomb blasts in London – three in the subways and one in a double-decker bus, killing 56 persons and injuring more than 700 people. This was projected as one of the worst terrorist attacks in the country's history. From then on, Britain’s headaches began. Here are some of the headlines that appeared in recent days:
  • London Feels More Like a Military Base Than an Olympic Park
  • Unprecedented security measures for London Olympics
  • England's stuffiness, security measures add up to a right proper Games
  • London's Olympic security headache
With more than 36,000 members of the security force for the 10,000 athletes and a security budget in the range of 1.6 billion pounds, one wonders whether the world needs to conduct a sports festival like this. Is this a festival at all, in the first place?
Another irony that comes to my mind is the anomaly of the term ‘truce’. We are aware that in view of this Olympics, all the 193 member countries of the U.N. unanimously passed a resolution that between July 27 to September 9, 2012, when the Paralympics will get over, they would not take up any armed conflicts. So, these countries have laid to rest all the weapons for around 40 days. The irony is… that around all the sports complexes of the Olympics 2012, weapons have been piled up, in case… In spite of all these precautions, still something could go wrong… Hence, we need to turn to God to protect the athletes, spectators and the common folks in London for the Summer Olympics as well as for the Paralympics which will follow.

We are painfully aware that one of the greatest problems facing us today is insecurity – physical, social, financial, political, psychological etc…etc. We can easily see that all these are inter-related. The more financial and social insecurity, the greater the violence! There is no strong political will to find a permanent solution to this situation. Any one can easily see that the gap between the haves and the have-nots is becoming a bottomless chasm! I feel that in the final analysis this is the main reason for all the insecurity we feel. Instead of bridging this gap, most of the governments spend more and more money on weapons. The best shield that can protect us is SHARING of our resources rather than stocking up wealth and weapons.

Sharing is the main theme in today’s liturgy. The readings from II Kings as well as the Gospel of John talk of the miraculous feeding of people. At first glance, these readings seem to highlight the miraculous intervention of God. But, on a deeper analysis, we can find that God and Jesus did not produce food out of nothing. There was the element of human contribution.
2 Kings 4:42-44
A man came from Ba'al-shal'ishah, bringing the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Eli'sha said, "Give to the men, that they may eat." But his servant said, "How am I to set this before a hundred men?" So he repeated, "Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and have some left.'" So he set it before them. And they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the LORD.

We see a similar scene in John’s gospel – John 6: 1-15. This passage seems like a sequel to last week’s passage from Mark. The closing lines of last week’s gospel gave us a picture of the compassionate shepherd:
Mark 6:34
As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
This week’s gospel begins with Jesus, the Good Shepherd being concerned about feeding the people. His question of how to feed those people met with more questions. Then came a solution: "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish". Jesus, as if waiting for this clue, told his disciples to make the people sit down for a meal! All that Jesus required was a little effort from one of them and it came via a child!

Usually this miracle is looked upon as a miracle of multiplication performed by Jesus. But, there is another interpretation to this episode. This interpretation stems from the basic question – how is it that a child carried food to the desert? When a family goes on a journey, children do not think of carrying food. This is the job of the parents. They foresee what would be required by children and get prepared.
For the Jews, this foresight was almost second nature. Having suffered slavery and shortage of food for generations, they were careful to carry food whenever they left their house. So, here was a family which had come to the desert to meet Jesus. The mother of the family had prepared five loaves and two fish for the family to eat. The child was simply carrying the food packet. We can easily presume that many of those who were there around Jesus, carried some food.
As it was getting late, they began to feel pangs of hunger. They were hesitant to open their packets since they knew that what they had was insufficient to feed the crowd. Hesitations, questions, calculations are typical of adults. Thank God, children are different. Hence, the miracle happened. The little lad heard Jesus discussing with his disciples about feeding the people. Without a second thought, the lad offered what he had carried from home – five loaves and two fish! Once the crowd saw this, then it was easy for them to open their packets and share…
Five loaves + two fish + Jesus’ blessing = more than 5000 people fed + 12 baskets of left-overs!
Not a simple mathematics, but pure magic! I consider this – namely, that Jesus and the child inspiring the people to share – a much more powerful miracle than simply Jesus multiplying the loaves!

The world needs extraordinary miracles of sharing. How do we get rid of the scandal of millions dying of hunger? We can pray for God’s direct intervention; we can hope for efficient actions of governments; we can fight with the haves to share with the have-nots… OR, as the little lad we can start sharing.
Let me close these reflections with a news item I read a fortnight back.
Spearheading a revolution with handful of rice (Source: UCAN-India)
July 15, 2012. Every drop makes an ocean. That adage perhaps never held so true as in the case of a Christian community in one of the poorest areas of India. A small community in Mizoram despite having not much to depend on for themselves have been religiously paying their tithes – “a handful rice.”
This community in the northeast not only supports itself financially, but has also managed to send out hundreds of missionaries. Behind their success is a simple practice called "a handful of rice."
Lalua lives in a tiny, remote village in Mizoram. Her family sustains on a meager income of less than $1 a day. Despite abject poverty, simple women like Lalua are spearheading a revolution that's sweeping the world of missions.
"Buhfai tham" is a practice where each Mizo family puts aside a handful of rice every time they cook a meal. Later, they gather it and offer it to the church. The church, in turn, sells the rice and generates income to support its work.
"It is not our richness or our poverty that makes us serve the Lord, but our willingness," said Rev. Zosangliana Colney, leader of Mizoram Presbyterian Church. "So we Mizo people say, 'As long as we have something to eat every day, we have something to give to God every day.'"
With 1,800 missionaries in India and many overseas, the Mizoram church is known as a missionary church around the world. This success is attributed to their selfless and creative giving.

I rest my case.

P.S. When I was looking for a picture to go with my reflection, I came across a blog from which I have taken this picture. There is a write-up in this blog on a new film called ‘The Hunger Games’, released in March, 2012. This is a movie based on a book with the same title written by Suzanne Collins in 2008. Boys Sharing Food
