Dying and Living Meaningfully

Life Beyond the Grave

Last Saturday, October 25, Reyhaneh Jabbari, a young (26 years old) Iranian woman was hanged. She was executed in Iran's Evin Prison, for the 2009 murder of an intelligence officer with a penknife, when he, according to her, tried to rape her. Reyhaneh was in prison for the past 7 years. Many countries and human-rights organisations tried in vain to release her, claiming that the court proceedings were flawed. Iran went ahead with the execution.
In a heartbreaking voice message to her mother Sholeh, Reyhaneh narrates how she faced death for the crime of defending herself against a man who tried to rape her. She also tells Sholeh to donate her organs after her death. This voice message, which has been translated by National Council of Resistance of Iran, has reached the media far and wide.
When I read the transcript of Reyhaneh’s message, my heart ached. I was deeply touched by the words of Reyhaneh pleading with her mother to beg the court permission to donate her organs after death and to do it without seeking any publicity. Here are the words of Reyhaneh to her mother:
However, before my death I want something from you, that you have to provide for me with all your might and in any way that you can. In fact this is the only thing I want from this world, this country and you. I know you need time for this. Therefore, I am telling you part of my will sooner. Please don't cry and listen. I want you to go to the court and tell them my request. I cannot write such a letter from inside the prison that would be approved by the head of prison; so once again you have to suffer because of me. It is the only thing that if even you beg for it I would not become upset although I have told you many times not to beg to save me from being executed.
My kind mother, dear Sholeh, the one more dear to me than my life, I don't want to rot under the soil. I don't want my eye or my young heart to turn into dust. Beg so that it is arranged that as soon as I am hanged my heart, kidney, eye, bones and anything that can be transplanted be taken away from my body and given to someone who needs them as a gift. I don't want the recipient know my name, buy me a bouquet, or even pray for me. I am telling you from the bottom of my heart that I don't want to have a grave, for you to come and mourn there and suffer. I don't want you to wear black clothing for me. Do your best to forget my difficult days. Give me to the wind to take away.

These words of Reyhaneh gave me a unique perspective on death and dying. This Sunday, (November 2) the Church invites us to commemorate the Dear Departed. Hence this message of Reyhaneh seems more appropriate to reflect on. In recent years the world has awakened to the beauty of organ donation. In the recent months I have read many instances from Tamil Nadu, where the organs of accident victims were generously donated by the family members. This is a very meaningful way of proclaiming to the world that one’s life does not end with the grave. On a special day of remembering the Dear Departed, we thank God for awakening in the hearts of men and women the generosity of organ donation.

The other segment from Reyhaneh’s message that affected me deeply was her trust that God will set things right in the heavenly court. Here are the words spoken by Reyhaneh to her mother:
The world did not love us. It did not want my fate. And now I am giving in to it and embrace the death. Because in the court of God I will charge the inspectors, I will charge inspector Shamlou, I will charge judge, and the judges of country's Supreme Court that beat me up when I was awake and did not refrain from harassing me. In the court of the creator I will charge Dr. Farvandi, I will charge Qassem Shabani and all those that out of ignorance or with their lies wronged me and trampled on my rights and didn't pay heed to the fact that sometimes what appears as reality is different from it. Dear soft-hearted Sholeh, in the other world it is you and me who are the accusers and others who are the accused. Let's see what God wants.

When the war in Syria was at its peak, many innocent children were killed. A graphic photo of one of those children – a 3 year old boy – bleeding and dying on a hospital bed, was flashed in the media with the headline: The last thing a 3 year old Syrian said before he died: “I’m gonna tell God everything” Whether this was a true incident or not, no one is sure. But one can surely believe that out of the mouths of babes God can teach us very harsh truths about this life and the life after.

All true religions of the world teach us that the life on earth is not an end in itself; it is rather a journey that has a special destination on the other side of the grave. “Christian death is like putting out the candle, since daylight has come” is one of my favourite quotes on death. The same idea is expressed in the Preface for the Mass for the Dead:
Indeed for your faithful Lord, life is changed, not ended;
and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust,
an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.

This day of the commemoration of the dead, serves as a reminder that all of us are pilgrims here on earth. If only we can understand this concept and believe this fact, we can solve so many problems in our personal life as well as in the international arena. Unfortunately, most of us tend to believe that our life here is permanent. The cost we pay to secure this permanency brings along with it, most of the problems we face in life. When I say ‘cost’ I am not talking of the money factor, only.
Many of us may be aware of the process of ‘cryonics’. Alcor Life Extension Foundation says: “The object of cryonics is to prevent death by preserving sufficient cell structure and chemistry so that recovery (including recovery of memory and personality) remains possible by foreseeable technology.” We can see that science is interested in prolonging human life beyond the natural process called death.

The extreme example of deluding ourselves that life on earth is permanent, would be the lifestyle of some of the richest persons on earth. I am thinking specially about the billion dollar house (Antilia) built in Mumbai by one of these richest persons. If only those who live in this house, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only those who have stacked up money in Swiss banks, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only those who have ravaged nature for their own personal benefits, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only our leaders who play a double game, misleading people all the time, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
All of us know that this litany could go on. We should include ourselves in this litany. If only all of us truly and sincerely believe that we are all pilgrims on earth… many problems can be and will be solved and we can live in peace and, at the end, truly RIP (rest in peace)!

We cannot wish death away. We can make it more meaningful by making our life more meaningful. As we celebrate the memory of our Dear Departed, let me close with the thoughts and words attributed to Henry Van Dyke, on death. This was a fresh perspective on death for me. I do hope it also gives you a new perspective on death:
Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Iran’s hanging of Reyhaneh Jabbari condemned

Christian death is like putting out the candle, since daylight has come.

Questions and more questions…

Love God, Love People, Do Something About it

There are questions and questions – the right ones and the wrong ones; the good ones and the bad ones. Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics, and one of the developers of the atomic bomb, was once asked how he became a scientist. Rabi replied that every day after school his mother would talk to him about his school day. She wasn't so much interested in what he had learned that day, but how he conducted himself in his studies. She always inquired, "Did you ask a good question today?" "Asking good questions," Rabi said, "made me become a scientist."

There are also different modes of asking questions. Questions that spring from a humble, sincere search for truth will lead one to light. Questions that spring from the apparent-all-knowing-arrogance will lead to darkness. In my teaching career, I have come across quite a few brilliant students who were much better in knowledge and skill than I. A few of them would surprise me with questions during class hours. Quite a few times I could smell a trap in their questions. They knew the answer and still wanted to test whether I knew it all right. Most of the time, I could tackle these situations to the best of my ability. Such moments left me humbled as well as enlightened!

Today’s gospel gives us an account of how Jesus met with a lawyer who knew too much and asked a question to find out whether Jesus knew enough. The very opening lines of today’s gospel tell us that the political game of the Pharisees (which we saw in the last Sunday’s gospel) was not finished yet.
Matthew 22: 34-36
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

In comparison to the expert in the law, Jesus was a simple itinerant preacher. The expert would have surely known that Jesus did not attend any of the law schools. Then why question him on the greatest commandment in the Law? This was the best way to prove in front of the people that Jesus was only an upstart and did not have solid foundation in Mosaic Law.
Jesus knew the ploy. Still, it was a profound question and Jesus was not one to let go of an excellent opportunity. Hence, Jesus gave him a reply. What a reply it was! This reply of Jesus has served as the heartbeat of Christian tradition all these centuries. Jesus combined two famous passages from the Old Testament – namely, Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. Here is the reply of Jesus as recorded by Matthew:
Matthew 22: 37-40
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

This incident is recorded in all the three synoptic gospels, each one with a few differences. It is interesting and instructive to pay attention to these different versions. While Matthew closes the event with the reply of Jesus, Mark goes on to say:
Mark 12: 32-34
“Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
Jesus and the teacher of the law admired each other in this question-and-answer session, and parted company as friends! True admiration for another comes as a result of having a true sense of admiration of oneself, first. I can surely say that Jesus did have an honest appraisal of himself and hence he could admire others when they were truly admirable, even if they were his ‘adversaries’.

In the gospel of Luke, (10:25-37) we get a very different picture of this incident. Here, Jesus, instead of saying these famous words himself, made the expert in the law say the famous line about the love of God and love of neighbour. Here again, Jesus admired the expert and told him: “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” (10:28) But, the expert wanted to ‘justify himself’… justify his years in the law school, justify his position in front of the people and asked the famous question: “And who is my neighbour?”
Jesus could have easily brushed aside the impertinence of the expert with a condescending smile and gone his way… But, no, Jesus answered this question. And, once again, what an answer! He came out with the world famous parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’. We are thankful to this expert in the law for being the catalyst in bringing to light one of the best parables from Jesus.

What Jesus said at the beginning and at the end of this parable is very relevant for us. At the beginning of this parable, Jesus told the expert: “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” (10:28) The closing conversation after the parable goes like this:
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” (10:36-37)
The emphasis is on ‘doing’. Actions more than thoughts and words… Do this, do likewise! We are sent into the world to live the Gospel… to live the love of God and love of neighbour. The world today has become more and more eloquent in defining what love is. We are offered hundreds of ‘love-machines’ that creates an illusion that the whole world is a family. This ‘family’ created by the business world is a virtual world. The real world is getting more and more torn and fragmented, leaving millions orphaned, widowed and estranged.

Against the background of this real world, today’s first reading comes as a wake-up call. The words given in this passage are very practical and they emphasise concrete, practical, day to day actions. Moreover, these words are given to us as coming from God.
Exodus 22: 21-27
Thus says the Lord: “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.
“If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest. If you take your neighbour’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset, because that cloak is the only covering your neighbour has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

Setting aside all eloquence, God seems to talk to us directly today. Christ, on his part, encourages us to love God and neighbour in action. If all of us can translate all our thoughts and words into actions – actions of sincere love and support, then we shall live. “Do this and you will live.”

The Greatest Commandment

Give back Caesar to God

Render to Caesar

For the past few months India has witnessed the rise and fall of many politicians. In other countries politics has played havoc – as in the case of the Gaza strip, in the form of ISIS, Boko Haram etc. Our reflections today, revolve around politics and politicians. I have very minimal respect for politicians. This may be due to the fact that I am yet to meet an honest, noble politician in person. I have read about such persons in books. I am sure there are a few of them; but they must be a rare breed. My idea of politics does not allow honest persons to survive there for long. My definition of politics has ‘connivance’ and ‘compromise’ written all over it.
When I say ‘politics’, I do not mean only party politics that dominates government circles in all the countries. I also mean politics that is present in all the other human spheres of activities, including religion. Politics and religion have been almost like inseparable twins in human history. They have co-existed as friends and foes. When convictions came to the fore, they were foes; but when compromises were struck, they were friends. In compromises, it was always politics that thrived, whereas religion – true religion – died.

Was Jesus involved in politics? I think so. In so far He had to deal with various powers that were operative in his times, he had to deal with politics. We are given one such incident in the life of Jesus as our gospel today. Here is the gospel passage as given in Matthew:
Matthew 22:15-21
Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”
But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

We can see the traits of two types of politics in this passge: the more commonly used ‘dirty politics’ of the Pharisees and the Herodians as well as the rarely found ‘good politics’ as demonstrated by Jesus.
First, the ‘dirty politics’: The opening lines of today’s gospel reveal some of the traits of this more-commonly-found-dirty-politics… The fist one: planning to trap someone in his/her words. As far as my idea of politics goes, this is probably the ONLY work done by most politicians. The very next sentence gives us a clue to another trait of politicians – striking a compromise to defeat a common enemy. It is also clear from these lines how political leaders act… namely, how they would depute emissaries in critical situations. In today’s gospel we see how the Pharisees sent their disciples along with the Herodians. Both Herod and the Pharisees themselves would not burn their fingers. They had had enough encounters with Jesus to have learnt how smart He was. Then, why risk one more time?
The Pharisees and the Herodians were usually sworn enemies. They held very opposing views of the Roman domination and Caesar. For the Pharisees, God was the supreme ruler and anyone who claimed divinity was an abomination. Caesar claimed divinity and hence, for the Pharisees he was an abomination. For the Herodians, Caesar was a saviour of sorts. Following their leader Herod, they were willing to serve Caesar. These two groups belonging to two different enemy camps were willing to compromise their positions to thwart a common enemy – Jesus. For the Herodians, compromises were their ‘daily bread’ since they were proper politicians. But for the Pharisees? Well, for them too… since they were politicians in clerical garb and with clerical titles.
The way they talk to Jesus brings to light another aspect of politicians, namely, how they approach their enemy carrying a garland within which are hidden daggers. If politicians speak out their real thoughts and real intentions, they would be laughed at. Hence, almost by instinct, they lay their snares with sugar-coated words. Thus, the opening lines of today’s gospel give us quite a few thoughts on ‘dirty politics’.

Now, to the ‘good politics’: The second part of today’s gospel gives us hope that politics can still be saved. Here we see the ‘good politics’ as practised by Jesus. Good politics begins by calling a spade a spade. As against the sweet talk of the Pharisees and the Herodians, Jesus confronts them with their insincerity. Such courage has been found in the history of politics, but very rarely.
Coming to the core of today’s gospel, we are given one of the most famous lines spoken by Jesus. These words of Jesus is probably one the most oft-quoted lines: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” If only these words of Jesus are followed in all spheres of life, namely, give each one what is due to him or her, this world would automatically become heaven.

The whole reflection may have sounded as venting my anger over politicians. But, as one of my fingers is pointed towards them, I need to be aware that three more are pointing towards me. Thus I need to examine myself thrice over to see how many of the traits of ‘dirty-politics’ are present in my life and also to see how much of the ‘good politics’ I can put into practice.
“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” When Jesus told us to give back to Caesar his coins since they bore his image, in the same breath, He reminded us that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1: 26) and therefore we need to give ourselves back to God. In that sense, Caesar too is to be given back to God!

This Sunday (October 19) we have two lovely reasons to break forth in celebration:
Reason 1 - Pope Francis will raise Pope Paul VI to the altars as a Blessed. Paul VI was the first Pope to set foot in India. In fact it was Pope Paul VI who broke the 200 year old custom of the Popes not leaving Italy. Pope Paul VI became a ‘pilgrim Pope’. In 1964, Pope Paul VI visited Bombay to take part in the International Eucharistic Congress. On the Golden Jubilee year of his visit to India he is raised to the altars. This calls for a celebration!
Reason 2 - The Extraordinary Synod that took place in Vatican for the past two weeks has come to a close, paving way for the Ordinary Synod that would follow next year. This Synod surely calls for a special celebration since ‘Family’ was the main focus of this Synod. The role of the Family is recognised as the heart beat of the Church.

Family ties… made simple!

If your brother sins against you
Some emails go around the web world quite a few times. One such mail that I have been receiving now and then in the past seven years is the short reflection written by Brian G. Dyson, who was the former CEO of Coca Cola. I am sure all of you must have seen this reflection quite a few times. Brian’s reflections as well as today’s gospel talks about family relationships. Here is what Brian wrote:
Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air.
You name them - Work - Family - Health - Friends - Spirit, and you're keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls -- family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.

Brian goes on to give 12 tips as to how one can balance one’s life. Today’s Gospel talks of how to achieve balance in a relationship that is soured or how to set right the mistake committed in our family circles. The words of Jesus sound simple - I would even say simplistic - but, very challenging. Here is the text from today’s Gospel of Matthew:
Matthew 18: 15-17
Jesus said: “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.
But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.'
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

The opening words of Jesus are a veritable salvo… Although I have read this passage quite a few times, this was the first time I felt the impact of this salvo. Jesus begins by saying, “If your brother sins against you,…”
When a problem arises in our family or among friends, we expect the one who had committed the mistake to take the first step. But, here Jesus reverses this logic. Not the one who sins, but the one who is sinned against needs to take the first step towards setting things right! I am reminded of the famous lines of Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount.
Matthew 5: 23-24
Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
Jesus did not say ‘if you have something against your brother or sister’, but he makes it clear that even ‘if your brother or sister has something against you’, you cannot proceed with your offering… Talk about challenges!

In both these instances, I presume Jesus was more keen on getting the problem resolved rather than spending time on investigations as to who caused the problem or wait for the ‘culprit’ to take the initiative. Hence, he proposes that we take the initiative and He says this simply AS A MATTER OF FACT, as a matter of NORMAL COURSE OF ACTION. If only in every family someone takes the initiative to resolve the conflict as soon as it arises, instead of allowing it to fester, so many hurt feelings can be healed… So many psychiatrists, and, even priests, would go out of business!

Jesus proposes three steps. The first one is the most sensible adult-to-adult transaction. Confronting (or, care-fronting) the person privately and telling him or her about the mistake… calling a spade a spade! When this does not work, then the second and third steps, namely, the third party intervention is needed.
Quite a few scripture scholars say that the very last step proposed in Matthew’s gospel, namely, “treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector”, may have been an addition by Matthew. This line does not reflect the ‘all-inclusive-attitude’ of Jesus. I tend to agree with this view, especially since Jesus, in the opening lines of this passage, proposes the hard step of taking the initiative to resolve problems. This initiative is more towards reconciliation and healing rather than sitting in judgement on my brother or sister.

Talking of family problems, one can think of the way TV serials (soap operas) handle these problems. Every episode tries to make family problems more and more complicated. The more complex the problem, the better for the soaps. Unfortunately, there is a sizeable audience which tends to agree with soaps that tell us that family problems are always complicated. As against this, when Jesus proposes simple, adult-to-adult transactions, we tend to brush his words aside saying that they are too idealistic or impossible!

Talking of how simple things can help foster family ties, I am reminded of the meeting Pope Francis had with the families last year – October 2013. There were thousands of family people who had gathered in St Peter’s Square as one of the peak events of the Year of Faith. This meeting of Pope Francis is etched deep in our memory due to a small boy in yellow shirt! He kept Pope Francis engaged for quite a few minutes and this video went viral in YouTube!
In this meeting, Pope Francis spoke of three magical words that would make any family healthy. Here are the words of Pope Francis:
“Some weeks ago, in this very square, I said that in order to have a healthy family, three words need to be used. And I want to repeat these three words: please, thank you, sorry. Three essential words! We say please so as not to be forceful in family life: “May I please do this? Would you be happy if I did this?”  We do this with a language that seeks agreement. We say thank you, thank you for love! But be honest with me, how many times do you say thank you to your wife, and you to your husband?  How many days go by without uttering this word, thanks! And the last word: sorry. We all make mistakes and on occasion someone gets offended in the marriage, in the family, and sometimes - I say - plates are smashed, harsh words are spoken but please listen to my advice: don’t ever let the sun set without reconciling. Peace is made each day in the family: “Please forgive me”, and then you start over. Please, thank you, sorry!  Shall we say them together? [They reply “yes”] Please, thank you and sorry.  Let us say these words in our families! To forgive one another each day!”

What Jesus proposes in the today’s Gospel sounds too simplistic and hence, we back off. We would rather go to a psychiatrist who may make things more complicated than go to Jesus. Similarly, the three magical words of Pope Francis - Please, thank you and sorry - also may sound too simplistic. Simple things, quite often, slip out of our focus.
If only we could give an honest chance for the words of Jesus as well as the advice of Pope Francis!!!...
