“A Few Buttons Missing” is a book written by James T.Fisher and L.S.Hawley in 1951. Fisher, a psychiatrist by profession, talks about the Sermon on the Mount in his book:
"If you were to take the sum total of all authoritative articles ever written by the most qualified of psychologists and psychiatrists on the subject of mental hygiene--if you were to combine them and refine them and cleave out the excess verbiage--if you were to take the whole of the meat and none of the parsley, and if you were to have these unadulterated bits of pure scientific knowledge concisely expressed by the most capable of living poets, you would have an awkward and incomplete summation of the Sermon on the Mount. And it would suffer immeasurably through comparison. For nearly two thousand years the Christian world has been holding in its hands the complete answer to its restless and fruitless yearnings. Here ... rests the blueprint for successful human life with optimum mental health and contentment."

We have been reflecting on the different sections of this Sermon for the past four Sundays. Today is the fifth time we are fortunate to visit this Sermon. Next week we shall, as it were, conclude this 'mini-series'. In today’s Gospel passage (Matthew 6: 24-34) Jesus makes three statements… call them suggestions, advice, challenges:
• You cannot serve both God and money.
• Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.
• Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
All these statements sound very ideal and out-of-this-world. But, on deeper analysis, they can be seen as very down-to-earth. It is a question of perspective!

Today’s passage begins with a big challenge that a person cannot serve two masters. While reading this line, my mind instinctively thought of politicians. Who said 'You cannot serve two masters'? We have been serving TWO, even THREE masters for so many years, they would say. They would easily serve several masters at the same time, not letting any of them know where their true allegiance lies.
Tamil Nadu is gearing up for elections and there would be shift of allegiances and forging of alliances. Enmity and friendship would be redefined at every election time. Since the public memory is quite short lived, all the political leaders would be making fresh statements contradicting their previous ones. All these would prove that they could serve more than two masters. Their ultimate master is money. They would do anything; go any distance to serve their great master - Mammon. Jesus makes a specific reference to this in the very next sentence: You cannot serve God and money.

You cannot serve God and money… What did Jesus mean by this? Depending on which word gets the most emphasis, the meaning would change as well. YOU (meaning, Jesus’ disciples) cannot serve both God and money. You CANNOT (meaning, that it would be against the very nature of a disciple) serve both God and money. Similarly we could stress the words SERVE, BOTH and AND. I would like to emphasise the word SERVE. A true disciple of Jesus cannot SERVE God and money.
For Jesus there is nothing wrong with money provided it is kept in its proper place. One can earn, save, and share money; but cannot SERVE money. I was struck by Jesus putting money on par / in competition with God. Can money compete with God? Unfortunately, yes and, worse still, it can win the race.

To worry or not to worry is a crucial human question. In the second part of today’s Gospel, Jesus answers this question in his own style. Erma Louise Bombeck was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for her newspaper column that described suburban home life from the mid-1960s until the late 1990s. Bombeck also published 15 books, most of which became best-sellers. She once wrote about a little guy named Donald. Donald was worrying about going to school. Here is how he expressed his anxieties. “My name is Donald. I don’t know anything. I have a new underwear, a loose tooth and I didn’t sleep last night because I’m worried. What if the bell rings and a man yells, ‘Where do you belong,’ and I don’t know? What if the trays in the cafeteria are too tall for me to reach? What if my loose tooth comes out when we have our heads down and are supposed to be quiet? Am I supposed to bleed quietly? What if I splash water on my name tag and my name disappears and no one knows who I am?”

I am sure most of us smiled reading the list of worries enlisted by poor little Donald. Poor Donald! Poor all of us! We tend to drown in a teaspoon of worry. To worry or not to worry? Does Jesus tell us simply to brush aside worries; sweep them under the carpet; pretend that there is no care in the world? What does Jesus mean by saying ‘do not worry about your life’? I would like to see this as a sequel to the previous section of today’s Gospel, where Jesus had indicated how money can replace God. Here Jesus indicates that we can be drowned in worries so much that God would disappear from our life. Once again God is put in competition with worries.
In today’s Gospel Jesus tries to tell us in a very simple but elegant way that God is much bigger than our worries. Unfortunately, when we are beset with worries it is much hard for us to believe these words of Jesus. Our worries seem much more tangible and over powering than God. Granted. But, by just worrying about actual and imagined things – like poor Donald – what do we achieve? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? This challenge of Jesus is pretty simple and straightforward.

If we can put money and worry in their proper place, if we develop a habit of seeing them in the proper perspective, if we do not replace God with money or worry… we are on the right track! The closing words of Jesus in today’s Gospel are truly golden words:
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

"ஒரு சில பொத்தான்களைக் காணோம்" (A Few Buttons Missing) என்பது 1951ல் James T.Fisher என்பவரால் எழுதப்பட்ட புத்தகம். மனநல மருத்துவரான Fisher தன் அனுபவங்களையெல்லாம் நகைச்சுவை கலந்து எழுதியுள்ளார். புத்தகத்தின் இறுதி பக்கங்களில் வாழ்வில் தான் கற்ற சில பாடங்களைத் தொகுத்து வழங்கியுள்ளார். அப்பாடங்களில் ஒன்று இயேசுவின் மலைப்பொழிவைப் பற்றியது:
"உலகின் புகழ்பெற்ற மனநல மருத்துவர்கள், அறிஞர்கள் கூறியுள்ள அனைத்து கருத்துக்களையும் ஒன்று திரட்டுவோம். அவைகளில் உள்ள தேவையற்ற வார்த்தைகளை எல்லாம் எடுத்துவிடுவோம். மனநலம் பற்றி ஆடம்பரமற்ற, கலப்படமற்ற உண்மைகளை எல்லாம் திரட்டினால், அவற்றில் இயேசு போதித்த மலைப்பொழிவின் சில பகுதிகளையாவது காணலாம். மன நலத்துடன், மன நிறைவுடன் வாழும் வழியைக் காட்டும் அற்புத திசைக்காட்டி இந்த மலைப்பொழிவு." என்று Fisher கூறியுள்ளார்.
அமெரிக்காவின் 33வது அரசுத் தலைவராக இருந்த Harry Truman சொன்ன கூற்றுகளில் ஒன்று இது: "மலைப்பொழிவு தரும் பாடங்களினால் தீர்க்கமுடியாத பிரச்சனைகள் அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டிலோ, உலகிலோ இல்லை."
கிறிஸ்தவம், சமயம் என்ற எல்லைகளைக் கடந்து, உலகத்தலைவர்களை, பெரும் அறிஞர்களைக் கவர்ந்துள்ள இயேசுவின் மலைப்போழிவைக் கடந்த நான்கு ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமைகளில் சிந்தித்தோம். இன்று ஐந்தாம் முறையாக சிந்திக்க வந்திருக்கிறோம்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு நமக்கு மூன்று அறிவுரைகளைத் தருகிறார்:
• கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்திற்கும் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது.
• எதை உண்போம்? எதைக் குடிப்போம்? எதை அணிவோம்? என்று கவலை கொள்ளாதீர்கள்.
• நாளைக்காக கவலைப் படாதீர்கள். அந்தந்த நாளுக்கு அன்றன்றுள்ள தொல்லையே போதும்.

"எவரும் இரு தலைவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது" இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் துவக்கத்தில் இயேசு கூறும் வார்த்தைகள் இவை. இவ்வார்த்தைகள் நாம் வாழும் இன்றைய உலகின் அரசியல் குறித்து நம்மைக் கொஞ்சம் சிந்திக்க வைக்கிறது. தமிழகம் விரைவில் தேர்தல்களைச் சந்திக்க இருப்பதால், இவ்வரிகளை ஓரளவு சிந்திப்பது பயனளிக்கும்.
இயேசு இவ்வார்த்தைகளைச் சொன்னபோது, உண்மையான தலைவன், உண்மையான பணியாளரைப் பற்றி அவர் நினைத்துப் பார்த்திருக்க வேண்டும். நல்ல பண்புகள் உள்ள ஒருவரைத் தலைவராக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளும் பணியாளர், அத்தலைவன் மீது உள்ள மதிப்பினால், அன்பினால் அவருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வார். தலைவன் தரும் ஊதியம், அல்லது பிற பயன்கள் இவைகளுக்காகச் செய்யப்படும் பணிவிடை அல்ல இது. அவைகளையெல்லாம் தாண்டி, பணியாளரின் பணிவிடை அமைந்திருக்கும். சில குடும்பங்களில் பல ஆண்டுகள் முழு விசுவாசத்துடன் பணிபுரிபவர்களைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம், அல்லது கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம். அத்தலைவனின் மகன் தலையெடுத்து வரும்போது, அவரிடம் தன் தலைவனிடம் இருந்த பண்புகள் இல்லையென்றால், பணியாளர் அவருக்கு உழைக்கத் தயங்கி விலகுவதையும் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம்.

“எவரும் இரு தலைவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்ய முடியாது” என்ற இயேசுவின் கூற்று, நமது அரசியல் தலைவர்கள், தொண்டர்களுக்குப் பொருந்தாது. இந்தத் தலைவர்கள், தொண்டர்கள் அனைவரும் வேறொரு தெய்வத்திற்குப் பணியாளர்கள். பணம் என்ற தெய்வத்திற்கு இவர்கள் அனைவரும் பணிவிடை செய்பவர்கள்.
இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் செல்வத்திற்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வது குறித்தும் பேசியிருக்கிறார். "கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்திற்கும் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது." என்று இயேசு கூறும் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்கும் இத்தலைவர்களும் தொண்டர்களும் உள்ளூர ஏளனமாய்ச் சிரித்துக் கொள்வார்கள். இயேசு சொல்வதை மறுத்து இவர்கள் சொல்வது இதுதான்... ‘கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்திற்கும் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது’ என்று யார் சொன்னது... நாங்கள் கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்திற்கும் பணிவிடை செய்கிறோம். ஏனெனில் எங்கள் கடவுளே செல்வம்தான், என்று சொல்பவர்கள் இவர்கள்.

"கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்திற்கும் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது." என்று இயேசு கூறியுள்ள இவ்வார்த்தைகளைப் பலமுறை நான் வாசித்திருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், இம்முறை வாசித்தபொழுது, என் மனதில் ஓர் எண்ணம் எழுந்தது. கடவுளுக்கு இணையாக உயிரற்ற ஒரு பொருளை இயேசு முன் வைக்கிறாரே... கடவுளுக்கு இணையாக, கடவுளுக்குப் பதிலாக, கடவுளுக்கும் மேலாக உயிரற்றப் பொருளை, செல்வத்தை வைக்க முடியுமா? இது சாத்தியமா? என்ற அதிர்ச்சிக் கேள்விகளுக்கு இது சாத்தியமாகியுள்ளது, சரித்திரமும் ஆகியுள்ளது என்ற பதில்கள் கிடைக்கும். கடவுளுக்குப் பதில் செல்வத்தைக் கடவுளாக்கி, வழிபடும், பணிவிடை செய்யும் பலரை நாம் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம்.

இயேசுவின் இந்தக் கூற்று செல்வத்திற்கு எதிராக, செல்வத்தைக் கண்டனம் செய்து பேசப்பட்டதாகத் தோன்றலாம். செல்வம் சேர்ப்பது, செல்வத்தைப் பகிர்வது, செலவிடுவது இவைகளை இயேசு குறை கூறவில்லை. செல்வத்திற்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வதையே அவர் தவறு என்று எச்சரிக்கிறார். செல்வம் என்ற உயிரற்றப் பொருள் நமக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யவேண்டும். இதுதான் இயற்கை. அதற்குப் பதிலாக, உயிரற்ற செல்வத்திற்கு உயிரும், அறிவும் கொண்ட நாம் பணிவிடை செய்வது தவறு என்று இயேசு எச்சரிக்கிறார்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு கூறும் அடுத்த அறிவுரை:
உயிர் வாழ எதை உண்பது, எதைக் குடிப்பது என்றோ, உடலுக்கு எதை உடுத்துவது என்றோ நீங்கள் கவலை கொள்ளாதீர்கள்.
இந்த அறிவுரையைப் பற்றி பேச எனக்குச் சிறிது தயக்கம், பயம். என் உடன்பிறந்தோர், உற்றார், நண்பர்கள் மத்தியில் அவ்வப்போது நான் இயேசுவின் இந்த அறிவுரையை எடுத்துக் காட்டியிருக்கிறேன். அவர்களில் பலர் எனக்குத் தந்த பதில் இதுதான்: "சாமி, உங்களுக்கென்ன, புள்ளயா, குட்டியா கவலைப்படுவதற்கு? கவலைப்பட வேண்டாம்னு நீங்க ஈசியா சொல்லிடுவீங்க. ஆனா, எங்க நிலைலே இருந்தீங்கனாத் தெரியும்." இது அவர்களின் வாதம். நான் முற்றிலும் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன். குடும்ப பாரங்கள் உள்ளவர்களின் கவலைகள் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் அதிகமாகிக்கொண்டே வருகின்றன. உண்மைதான். ஆனால், கவலைகளின் சுமைகளால் நமது உள்ளங்கள் நசுங்கிவிடாமல் காக்கும் வழிகளையும் சிறிது சிந்திப்பது நல்லதென்று நினைக்கிறேன். முயன்று பார்ப்போம்.

கடவுளையும், செல்வத்தையும் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் முதல் பகுதியில் ஒப்புமைப்படுத்தி பேசிய இயேசு, கடவுளையும், கவலைகளையும் இரண்டாம் பகுதியில் ஒப்புமைப் படுத்துகிறார். செல்வத்தைக் கடவுளுக்கு இணையாக வைத்து வழிபடுவதும், பணிவிடை செய்வதும் தவறு என்று கூறும் இயேசு, கடவுளை நம் கண்களிலிருந்து மறைக்கும் அளவு நம்மைக் கவலைகளால் நாமே சூழ்ந்து கொள்வது பற்றியும் எச்சரிக்கிறார். சிறு, சிறுத் துளிகளாய் சேரும் கவலைகள் விரைவில் நம்மை மூழ்கடிக்கும்.

Erma Louise Bembeck என்ற எழுத்தாளர் 1960களில் அமெரிக்க நகர வாழ்வைப் பற்றி சிறு, சிறு பகுதிகளாக நாளிதழ்களில் எழுதி வந்தார். வேடிக்கையும் கருத்தும் நிறைந்த தன் எழுத்துக்களால் பல நல்லெண்ணங்களை விதைத்துள்ளார். இவரது எண்ணங்கள் 15 புத்தகங்களாய் வெளிவந்துள்ளன. பள்ளிக்குச் செல்ல பயந்த Donald என்ற சிறுவனைப் பற்றி Bembeck ஒரு நாள் எழுதிய ஒரு சிறு பகுதி இது:
"என் பெயர் Donald. எனக்கு எதுவும் தெரியாது. என்னுடைய ஒரு பல் ஆடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. நான் இதைப் பற்றி அதிகம் கவலைப்பட்டதால், இரவு சரியாகத் தூங்க முடியவில்லை. என் பள்ளியில் உள்ள உணவகத்தில் நாற்காலிகள் அதிக உயரமாய் இருந்தால், நான் எப்படி அதில் ஏறி அமர முடியும்? நான் பள்ளியில் முகம் கழுவும்போது, என் சட்டையில் குத்தப்பட்டுள்ள அட்டையில் தண்ணீர் பட்டு, என் பெயர் அழிந்துவிட்டால், என்ன செய்வேன்? ஆடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் என் பல் வகுப்பு நடக்கும்போது, விழுந்துவிட்டால், என்ன செய்வேன்? கொட்டும் இரத்தத்தை யார் துடைப்பார்கள்?"
சிறுவன் Donaldன் இந்தக் கவலைப் பட்டியலை வாசிக்கும்போது, வயது முதிர்ந்துவிட்ட நமக்கு மனதில் ஒரு இலேசான கேலிச் சிரிப்பு எழுகிறது... இல்லையா? மனதைத் தொட்டுச் சொல்லுங்கள்... எத்தனை முறை நாம் சிறுவன் Donald ஆக மாறியிருக்கிறோம், இன்றும் மாறி வருகிறோம். தமிழ் திரைப்படம் ஒன்றில் ஒரு நடிகர் மனநல மருத்துவரிடம் பட்டியலிடும் "பயங்கள்" நம் நினைவுக்கு வரலாம். "எனக்கு எல்லாம் பயமயம். கவிதை பயமெனக்கு... கதை பயமெனக்கு." என்று அந்த நடிகர் சொன்ன பட்டியல் நம்மில் சிரிப்பை வரவழைத்திருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அந்த பயங்கள் போலவே நாமும் எல்லாவற்றையும் கவலை மயமாக்குவதையும் சிந்திக்கலாம்.

"கவலைப்படாதீர்கள்" என்று மட்டும் இயேசு கூறிச் சென்றிருந்தால், அவருக்கென்ன... இறைமகன், பிரமச்சாரி... எளிதாகச் சொல்லிவிட்டார் என்று நாம் குறை கண்டுபிடித்திருப்போம். கவலை கொள்ளாமல் இருக்க இயேசு வழிகளையும் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். கவலைக்குப் பதில் கடவுள் நம்பிக்கையால் மனதை நிரப்புங்கள் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.
கவலைப்படுவதால் உங்களில் யார் தன் உயரத்தைக் கூட்டமுடியும் என்று அவர் நமக்கு முன் வைக்கும் ஓர் எதார்த்தமான சவால், நம்மை விழித்தெழச் செய்கிறது. கவலைப்படுவதால் ஒருவேளை நாம் குறுகிப் போக, உடல்நலம் குறைந்துபோக அதிக வாய்ப்புக்கள் உண்டு. உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், அதுவும் பல வழிகளிலும் வளர்ச்சியடைந்துள்ள நாடுகளில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்பவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையும் வளர்ந்து வருகிறது என்பது நம் அனைவருக்கும் தெரியும். தற்கொலைக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக கவலைகளால் உருவாகும் வயிற்றுப்புண், இரத்த அழுத்தம், இதயக் கோளாறு ஆகியவற்றால் இறப்பவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையும் அதிகம் என்பது இன்றைய புள்ளிவிவரங்கள்.
கவலைப் படுவதால், உடல் உயரத்தைக் கூட்ட முடியாது, உடல் நலத்தையும் கூட்ட முடியாது. செல்வம் சேர்க்காதீர்கள், கவலைப்படாதீர்கள் என்று இயேசு சொல்லவில்லை. காசையும், கவலைகளையும் கடவுளுக்கு இணையாகவோ, கடவுளாகவோ மாற்ற வேண்டாம், அவைகளுக்குக் கோவில் கட்டவோ, அவைகளுக்கு அடிமைகளாய் பணிவிடை செய்யவோ வேண்டாம் என்று இயேசு தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார்.

இயேசு இன்று நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் கூறும் வார்த்தைகள் நம் மனதில் ஆழமாய் பதிய வேண்டும். மிகவும் எளிதான, வாழ்வில் கடைபிடிக்க வேண்டிய அறிவுரை இது:
நாளைக்காகக் கவலைப்படாதீர்கள். ஏனெனில் நாளையக் கவலையைப் போக்க நாளை வழி பிறக்கும. அந்தந்த நாளுக்கு அன்றன்றுள்ள தொல்லையே போதும்.
