Making connections between world events and the Word of God is one of the preoccupations of any priest before the Sunday Liturgy. This Sunday is the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord. This Sunday, June 5th, is the World Environment Day (WED). I wanted to see a connection between these two significant days. The First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, especially the message given by the ‘men-dressed-in-white’, came to my aid instantly.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he (Jesus) was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1: 10-11)
The question ‘Why do you stand here looking into the sky?’ brought a smile to me. This was a perfect question to connect the Ascension with the World Environment Day… Here is how it goes! I am trying to say what those two men, perhaps, intended to say: “Okay, folks, Christ has gone to Heaven. Let’s not keep staring into the sky… Let’s turn our gaze on earth. We have more things to accomplish here on earth.”
Here is a brief intro from the Wikipedia on World Environment Day (WED): It is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It is on 5 June. It was the day that the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began in Stockholm… World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of 5 June.

This year (2011) WED will be celebrated in New Delhi, India with the theme: Forests: Nature at your Service. My interest in this day all the more increased due to the call made by NCCI.
Churches in India are being encouraged to observe June 5 as ‘Green Sunday’ in commemoration of the World Environment Day. The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) is urging churches to conduct special prayers, sermons and intercessions on World Environment Day which falls on Sunday. (Cathnews India) I thought I would do my bit in promoting this Sunday as Green Sunday by concentrating my reflections on WED alone.
Although WED was established in 1972, (Next year we shall be completing 40 long years of WED!) we have not made much progress in learning how to protect our environment. 20 years back a 13 year old girl tried to teach the world some lessons. The Earth Summit 1992 held in Rio, Brasil was swept away by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a 13 year old girl from Canada. Hello, I'm Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O. - The Environmental Children's Organisation. We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds from Canada trying to make a difference: Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me. We raised all the money ourselves to come five thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future.
Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock market. I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go. We cannot afford to be not heard.
I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what chemicals are in it. I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear about animals and plants going extinct every day -- vanishing forever. In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.
Did you have to worry about these little things when you were my age?
All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions, but I want you to realise, neither do you!
• You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer.
• You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream.
• You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct.
• And you can't bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert.
If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!
Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organisers, reporters or politicians - but really you are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, aunts and uncles - and all of you are somebody's child.
I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family, five billion strong, in fact, 30 million species strong and we all share the same air, water and soil -- borders and governments will never change that. I'm only a child yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal. In my anger, I am not blind, and in my fear, I am not afraid to tell the world how I feel.
In my country, we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and yet northern countries will not share with the needy. Even when we have more than enough, we are afraid to lose some of our wealth, afraid to share. In Canada, we live the privileged life, with plenty of food, water and shelter -- we have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets.
Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent some time with some children living on the streets. And this is what one child told us: "I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicine, shelter and love and affection." If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy? I can't stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.
I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be!
At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us:
• not to fight with others,
• to work things out,
• to respect others,
• to clean up our mess,
• not to hurt other creatures
• to share - not be greedy.
Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?
Do not forget why you're attending these conferences, who you're doing this for -- we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in.
Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying "everything's going to be alright", "we're doing the best we can" and "it's not the end of the world".
But I don't think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? My father always says "You are what you do, not what you say."
Well, what you do makes me cry at night. You grown ups say you love us. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words. Thank you for listening.
One of the most powerful lines from this speech was: “If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!” If only we could listen to our future generations and stop breaking the universe, the environment and the human family… If we cannot leave a wholesome universe for our next generation, let us at least leave a broken world instead of a completely devastated one for them!
Warning bells do ring now and then about this impending devastation… the last one being from Fukushima, Japan. But, I think most of us live in a dreamy world. May the words of the men in white shake us out of our slumber – ‘Why do you stand here looking into the sky?’ May the assurance of Jesus given to us in today’s Gospel help us as we take up the enormous duty of saving our Planet Earth! “I am with you always, to the very end of the age”. (Matthew 28: 20)
இன்று இயேசுவின் விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழா. இன்று ஜூன் 5ம் தேதி - உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாள். விண்ணேற்றத் திருநாளையும், உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளையும் இணைத்து சிந்திக்க இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தின் இறுதியில் இறைத்தூதர்கள் சீடர்களுக்குச் சொன்ன வரிகள் உதவியாக உள்ளன.
திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் 1: 9-11
இவற்றைச் சொன்னபின்பு, அவர்கள் கண்கள் முன்பாக இயேசு மேலே எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார். மேகம் ஒன்று அவரை எடுத்துச் சென்று அவர்கள் பார்வையிலிருந்து மறைத்துவிட்டது. அவர் செல்லும் போது, அவர்கள் வானத்தை அண்ணாந்து பார்த்துக் கொண்டே இருந்தார்கள். அப்போது வெண்ணுடை அணிந்த இருவர் தோன்றி, “கலிலேயரே, நீங்கள் ஏன் வானத்தைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே நிற்கிறீர்கள்? இந்த இயேசு உங்களிடமிருந்து விண்ணேற்றமடைந்ததைக் கண்டீர்களல்லவா? அவ்வாறே அவர் மீண்டும் வருவார்” என்றனர்.
"ஏன் வானத்தைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே நிற்கிறீர்கள்?" என்று இறைத்தூதர்கள் கேட்ட கேள்வியைக் கொஞ்சம் விரிவாகச் சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்கலாம். "வானத்தைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே நிற்பதில் அர்த்தமில்லை. இந்தப் பூமியைப் பாருங்கள். இங்கு நீங்கள் ஆற்றவேண்டிய பல பணிகள் உள்ளன. அவற்றைத் தொடருங்கள்." என்று இறைத்தூதர்கள் சீடர்களிடம் மறைமுகமாய் உணர்த்தினர். இந்த வார்த்தைகள் நமது பார்வையையும், நமது கவனத்தையும் இந்த உலகை நோக்கித் திருப்புகின்றன. இன்றைய ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையில் நாம் இம்மண்ணை நோக்கி, இவ்வுலகை நோக்கி நம் சிந்தனைகளைத் திருப்புவோம்.
நம் வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு நொடியிலும் நமது சுற்றுச்சூழலை எதோ ஒரு வகையில் நாம் பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். நம்மை வாழவைக்கும் இந்தப் பூமியை, நமது சுற்றுச்சூழலை நாம் வாழவைக்கிறோமா? இல்லையே. நமது பேராசையால் நமது பூமியையும், நாம் வாழும் சூழலையும் காயப்படுத்தி வருகிறோம்.
ஸ்வீடன் அரசின் முயற்சியால், ஐ.நா. பொதுஅவை உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் கருத்தரங்கு ஒன்றை 1972ம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 5ம் தேதி துவக்கியது. இதற்குப் பின், ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் ஜூன் 5ம் தேதியை உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளாகக் கொண்டாட முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளன. உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளைப் பற்றி நாம் கொண்டாட அதிகம் காரணங்கள் இல்லை. ஆனால், இந்த நாளைப் பற்றி பாடங்கள் பயில ஆயிரம் காரணங்கள் உள்ளன. 1972ம் ஆண்டு ஆரம்பமான இந்த முயற்சி, வரும் ஆண்டு 2012ல் 40 ஆண்டுகளை நிறைவு செய்யும். இந்த நாற்பது ஆண்டுகளில் மனித குலம் சுற்றுச்சூழலைப் போற்றிக்காப்பது பற்றி அதிகம் கற்றுக் கொண்டதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. இந்தப் பாடங்களை 13 வயது நிரம்பிய ஒரு சிறுமி மனித குலத்திற்குச் சொல்லித் தந்தாள்.
ஸ்வீடன் நாட்டு கருத்தரங்கு முடிந்து, 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் 1992ல் Brasil நாட்டில் பூமிக்கோளத்தின் உச்சி மாநாடு (Earth Summit 1992) ஒன்று நடந்தது. இந்த மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ள 172 நாடுகளிலிருந்து பல உயர்மட்டத் தலைவர்கள் வந்திருந்தனர். பல நாட்டுத்தலைவர்கள், பல உலக நிறுவனங்களின் தலைவர்கள் அனைவரையும் Severn Cullis-Suzuki என்ற கனடா நாட்டுச் சிறுமி அதிர்ச்சியில், அமைதியில் ஆழ்த்தினாள்.
இச்சிறுமி அந்த உச்சி மாநாட்டில் 6 நிமிடங்களே உரையாற்றினாள். ஆனால், அவள் சொன்னவை உலகில் இன்றும் பேசப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. The Little Girl Who Shocked World Leaders Into Silence 'உலகத் தலைவர்களை அமைதியில் உறையச் செய்த சிறுமி', அல்லது, 'இந்த உலகைச் சில நிமிடங்கள் அசையாது நிறுத்திய சிறுமி' என்ற தலைப்புகளில் இணையதளத்தில் இந்தச் சிறுமியின் உரை இன்றும் காணக் கிடக்கிறது. ஆர்வம் உள்ளவர்கள் நேரம் ஒதுக்கி, இவ்வுரையைக் கேளுங்கள். இதோ Severn Suzukiயின் உரையில் இருந்து ஒரு சிலப் பகுதிகள்:

வெளியில் சென்று சூரிய ஒளியில் நிற்பதற்கோ, வெளிக் காற்றைச் சுவாசிப்பதற்கோ எனக்குப் பயமாக உள்ளது. இவைகளில் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள மாற்றங்களை ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நான் கேட்டு வருகிறேன். அதனால், எனக்குப் பயமாக உள்ளது.”
இவ்விதம் தன் உரையைச் சூடாக ஆரம்பித்த சிறுமி Severn Suzuki, அவர்களை நோக்கிச் சிலக் கேள்விகளை எழுப்பினாள். அன்று அம்புகளாய் அத்தலைவர்களை நோக்கிப் பாய்ந்த அக்கேள்விகள் இன்று நம்மையும் நோக்கி பாய்ந்து வருகின்றன.
“நீங்கள் சிறுவர்களாய் இருந்தபோது என்னைப் போல் சூரியனையும், காற்றையும் பற்றி பயந்தீர்களா? கவலைப் பட்டீர்களா? நான் வாழும் இந்த உலகில் நடக்கும் பயங்கரங்களுக்கு என்ன பதில் என்று சிறுமி எனக்குத் தெரியாது. உங்களுக்கும் அந்தப் பதில்கள் தெரியாது என்ற உண்மையை நீங்கள் உணர வேண்டும் என்று கூறவே நான் இங்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன்.
விண்வெளியில் ஓசோன் படலத்தில் விழுந்துள்ள ஓட்டையை அடைக்க உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.
இறந்து போகும் உயிரினங்களை மீண்டும் உயிர்ப்பிக்க உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.
காடுகள் அழிந்து பாலை நிலங்களாய் மாறிவருவதைத் தடுக்கும் வழிகள் உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.
உடைந்து போன இயற்கையைச் சரி செய்ய உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதபோது, அதை மேலும் உடைக்காமல் விடுங்கள். அது போதும் எங்கள் தலைமுறைக்கு.”
Severn Suzuki பேசியபோது பல உலகத் தலைவர்களின் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தது. பலர் குற்ற உணர்வோடு அந்தச் சிறுமியை ஏறெடுத்துப் பார்க்கவும் துணியாமல் தலை குனிந்து அமர்ந்திருந்தனர். தொடர்ந்து உண்மைகளைப் பேசினாள் அச்சிறுமி.
“நான் வாழும் கனடாவில் நாங்கள் அதிகப் பொருட்களை வீணாக்குகிறோம். பல பொருட்களை முழுதாகப் பயன்படுத்தாமல் தூக்கி எறிகிறோம். அதே நேரத்தில், எத்தனையோ நாடுகளில் தேவைகள் அதிகம் இருக்கும் கோடிக்கணக்கானோர் வாழ வழியின்றி இறக்கின்றனர். தூக்கி ஏறிய எண்ணம் உள்ள எங்களுக்கு, இவற்றைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள எண்ணம் எழுவதில்லை.
நான் சிறுமிதான். ஆனால், எனக்குத் தெரியும் சில உண்மைகள் ஏன் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை? நாம் இன்று போருக்குச் செலவிடும் பணத்தைக் கொண்டு இவ்வுலகின் ஏழ்மையை முற்றிலும் ஒழிக்க முடியும், நமது இயற்கையை காக்க முடியும் என்ற பதில்கள் எனக்குத் தெரிகிறதே; ஏன் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை?
குழந்தைகளாய் நாங்கள் வளரும்போது, எங்களுக்குப் பல பாடங்கள் சொல்லித் தருகிறீர்கள்:
மற்ற குழந்தைகளுடன் சண்டை போடக்கூடாது;
மற்றவர்களை மதிப்புடன் நடத்த வேண்டும்;
நாங்கள் போட்ட குப்பையை நாங்களே சுத்தம் செய்ய வேண்டும்;
மற்ற வாயில்லா உயிரினங்கள் மேல் பரிவு காட்ட வேண்டும்;
எங்களிடம் உள்ளதை மற்றவர்களோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்; எல்லாவற்றையும் நாங்களே வைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது...
என்று எங்களுக்கு எத்தனைப் பாடங்கள் சொல்லித் தருகிறீர்கள். பிறகு, நீங்கள் ஏன் இந்தப் பாடங்களுக்கு எதிராக நடந்து கொள்கிறீர்கள்?”
இறுதியாக, அச்சிறுமி அவர்கள் மனசாட்சியைத் தட்டியெழுப்பும் வகையில் பேசி முடித்தாள்.

பயந்து கலங்கிப் போயிருக்கும் குழந்தைகளைப் பெற்றோர் அரவணைத்துத் தேற்றும்போது, ‘எல்லாம் சரியாகிப் போகும்’ என்று சொல்லி குழந்தைகளைச் சமாதானம் செய்வார்கள். எங்கள் தலைமுறைக்கு இந்த வார்த்தைகளை உங்களால் சொல்ல முடியுமா? ‘எல்லாம் சரியாகிப் போகும்’ என்று மனதார உங்களால், எங்களைப் பார்த்து சொல்ல முடியுமா? எங்கள் மீது அன்பு கொண்டிருப்பதாக நீங்கள் அடிக்கடி சொல்கிறீர்கள். நீங்கள் சொல்வது உண்மையென்றால், அதைச் செயலில் காட்டுங்கள். இது நான் உங்கள் முன் வைக்கும் ஒரு சவால். இதுவரைப் பொறுமையுடன் எனக்குச் செவி மடுத்ததற்கு நன்றி.”
அந்த ஆறு நிமிடங்கள் உலகச் சமுதாயத்தின் மனசாட்சியைத் தட்டி எழுப்பி, சங்கடமான கேள்விகளை விட்டுச் சென்றாள் அந்தச் சிறுமி. இது நடந்து இப்போது ஏறத்தாழ 20 ஆண்டுகள் கழிந்து விட்டன. Severn Suzuki அன்று எழுப்பிய அந்தக் கேள்விகள் இன்றும் நமக்கு எழுப்பப்படுகின்றன. இக்கேள்விக் கணைகள் நம்மீது பாயும்போது, நாமும் தலைகுனித்து நிற்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. மனிதச் சமுதாயம் இன்னும் இயற்கைக்கு இழைத்து வரும் அழிவுகளை நிறுத்தாததால், இந்த ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதம் ஜப்பான் நமக்கு மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை எச்சரிக்கை மணியை ஒலித்துள்ளது. கேட்கச் செவி உள்ளவர்கள்தாமே நாம்... இந்த எச்சரிக்கையைச் சரியாகக் கேட்டிருக்கிறோமா?
இவ்வாண்டு 2011, ஜூன் 5ம் தேதி இந்தியத் தலைநகரம் புது டில்லி உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளுக்கெனத் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த ஆண்டின் மையக் கருத்து: 'காடுகள்: உங்களுக்குப் பணி செய்யும் இயற்கை'. நமக்குப் பணிகள் செய்யும் இயற்கையை நாம் பணிவுடன் அணுகினால், மதிப்புடன் பாதுகாத்தால் நமது அடுத்தத் தலைமுறையினருக்கு நல்லதொரு உலகை நம்மால் விட்டுச் செல்ல முடியும். இந்த ஆண்டு இந்தியாவின் தலைநகரில் உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாள் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுவதையொட்டி, அனைத்துக் கிறிஸ்தவ சபைகளும் இணைந்து ஜூன் 5, இந்த ஞாயிறை பசுமை ஞாயிறு என்று கொண்டாட அழைப்பு விடுத்துள்ளன.
"ஏன் வானத்தைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே நிற்கிறீர்கள்?" என்று இறைத்தூதர்கள் கேட்ட கேள்வியை மீண்டும் நினைவுக்குக் கொணர்வோம். வானத்தையேப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிராமல், நமது சுய நலம் என்ற சிறு கனவுலகிலேயே அடைபட்டுக் கிடக்காமல், இந்த உலகை, சுற்றுச்சூழலைக் காக்க முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்வோம். விண்ணேற்றம் அடைந்த பின்னும், 'இதோ! உலக முடிவு வரை எந்நாளும் நான் உங்களோடு இருப்பேன்' என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நமக்கு வாக்களித்துள்ள இறைமகன் இயேசு, நம்மை இந்த நற்பணியில் வழிநடத்த வேண்டுவோம்.
