"Have you anything here to eat?" “உண்பதற்கு இங்கே உங்களிடம் ஏதேனும் உண்டா?”

A blanket manufacturing factory in Jalandhar, North India collapsed on Sunday, April 15^th. Although more and more gloomy news pours in from the Jalandhar disaster, we have heard of two young men having been rescued from the collapsed building 55 hours (Sanjeev Kumar) and 72 hours (Nithish Kumar) after the disaster. As Nitish was taken away by the rescue teams and paramedics to hospital for treatment, his brother, Mithilesh Kumar, said they had lost all hope of seeing him again. "We are so happy to see him alive. We had almost given up all hopes," Mithilesh said as tears rolled down his eyes. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com

Extreme joy and extreme sadness bring tears. These extreme situations also leave us stunned in disbelief. “Oh, my God, I can’t believe this” is the cry of a person bursting with joy or burning in agony. We hear of a similar situation in today’s Gospel: They (the disciples) still disbelieved for joy, and wondered… What Jesus did with the stupefied disciples was more stupefying. The same verse talks about this: And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, Jesus said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" (Luke 24:41)

The idea of the Resurrection was not a clear concept for the disciples. So, Jesus could have easily taught them about the Resurrection by showing himself in all his glory as he had done once earlier on Mount Tabor. Such a revelation would have cleared the doubts of the disciples once and for all. Jesus had other ideas. A brilliant manifestation of his glory would have surely dazzled the disciples; but, would that have left a lasting impression on them? I wonder! The way Jesus, the master-par-excellence, chose to reveal the great mystery of the Resurrection left lasting impressions on the disciples and changed their life entirely.

“Have you anything here to eat?” was the way Jesus began his lessons. In most of the post-resurrection encounters of Jesus with his disciples food became a central element. Jesus sharing a meal with them can be seen from two perspectives.

The first perspective is drawn from our own life situations. When a family loses a dear one, especially if it is the sudden death of a younger person, the family would be devastated. The family members will neither eat nor sleep. Those who are close to this family will somehow force the family members to eat something. I see Jesus doing something similar among his disciples. The disciples of Jesus as well as Mother Mary must have stopped eating after the tragedy at Calvary. So, Jesus came to them to force them to eat by sharing a meal with them.

The second perspective comes from the way Jesus and his disciples had been sharing food during their life together. Since their life had become very hectic, private moments of sharing a meal must have become rare. When such ‘private moments’ arrived, they were moments of deep sharing – not only sharing of food, but also sharing of their inner selves. The peak moment of such a sharing occurred three days back when Jesus shared the Paschal meal with his disciples. It was during that meal that he had assured them of his continued presence in the form of food – bread and wine.

When Jesus met them after the Resurrection, he wanted to remind them of that Special Supper. He also wanted to tell them that nothing had changed. By sharing another meal with them, he assured them that his presence continued with them.

Sharing of food, a very common feature in daily life is not simply a filling of one’s stomach with some edible stuff. It is filled with so many other aspects of human life. Especially when a meal is shared among those who are very close, food assumes a sacramental meaning.

Before sharing this meal, Jesus did another simple thing among his disciples. Here is the first part of today’s gospel: “As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them. But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit.  And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?"

Jesus showed them his pierced hands and feet as proofs of his Resurrection rather than the torn screen of the Temple or the empty tomb. Once again, Jesus made the experience of his Resurrection much more personal than a grand exhibition of his power and majesty. His pierced hands and feet were a deeper testimony of his power of love than any other outward manifestation. I am reminded of a lovely story from Tolstoy that talks about ‘hands’:

Tolstoy once told a story of a Czar and Czarina who wished to honour the members of their court with a banquet. They sent out invitations and requested that the guests come with the invitations in their hands. When they arrived at the banquet the guests were surprised to discover that the guards did not look at their invitations at all. Instead they examined their hands. The guests wondered about this, but they were also curious to see who the Czar and Czarina would choose as the guest of honour to sit between them at the banquet. They were flabbergasted to see that it was the old scrub woman who had worked to keep the palace clean for years. The guards, having examined her hands, declared, "You have the proper credentials to be the guest of honour. We can see your love and loyalty in your hands."

Sharing of a meal, showing the wounded hands and feet had such a lasting impact on the disciples that they became messengers of the Resurrection even to the point of laying down their lives. The Risen Christ is not a magician who dazzles us momentarily by his brilliance, but a Saviour who accompanies us in the day to day events of our lives making a great difference!

ஜலந்தரில் கட்டடம் ஒன்று இடிந்தது.

சஞ்சீவ் குமார் என்ற 17 வயது இளைஞன் கட்டட இடிபாடுகளிலிருந்து 55 மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின் உயிரோடு மீட்கப்பட்டார்.

நிதிஷ் குமார் என்ற 18 வயது இளைஞன் 72 மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின், வியாழன் அதிகாலையில் உயிரோடு மீட்கப்பட்டார்.

கடந்த சில நாட்களாக ஊடகங்களில் வந்த செய்திகள் இவை. ஏப்ரல் 15, கடந்த ஞாயிறு, நள்ளிரவில் வட இந்தியாவில் ஜலந்தர் எனும் நகரில் கம்பளம் உற்பத்தி செய்யும் நான்கு மாடி கட்டடம் ஒன்று திடீரென இடிந்து விழுந்ததில், பலர் உயிரிழந்தனர். இன்னும் பலர் மீட்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

ஹெயிட்டி நாட்டின் நிலநடுக்கத்தில் பதினாறு நாட்களுக்குப் பின் இளம்பெண் உயிரோடு மீட்கப்பட்டது, சிலே நாட்டு சுரங்க விபத்தில் அகப்பட்ட 33 தொழிலாளிகள் 69 நாட்களுக்குப் பின் உயிரோடு மீட்கப்பட்டது... என்ற செய்திகள் கடந்த இரு ஆண்டுகளில் நம்மை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளன.

72 மணி நேரத்திற்குப் பின், ஏப்ரல் 19, இவ்வியாழன் அதிகாலையில் நிதிஷ் குமார் மீட்கப்பட்டபோது, அவரது சகோதரர் மிதிலேஷ் குமார் சொன்னது இதுதான்: "நேரம் செல்லச் செல்ல, நிதிஷை உயிரோடு பார்ப்போம் என்ற நம்பிக்கை பறிபோனது... இப்போது அவன் உயிரோடு இருப்பதை இன்னும் என்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை." என்று கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தோட அவர் சொன்னதாகச் செய்திகள் கூறுகின்றன. மகிழ்வின் உச்சத்தில் மிதிலேஷ் வடித்தது ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர். துயரத்தின் உச்சியிலும், மகிழ்வின் உச்சியிலும் கண்கள் கண்ணீரைச் சிந்துகின்றன.

நிதிஷ் உயிரோடு இருப்பதை தன்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை என்று மிதிலேஷ் சொன்னதுபோல் நாமும் பலமுறை சொல்லியிருக்கிறோம். “Oh my God, I can't believe this” “கடவுளே, என்னால் இதை நம்பவே முடியவில்லை” என்று மகிழ்வின் உச்சத்தில் நாம் கத்தியிருக்கிறோம். இதே வார்த்தைகளைத் துயரத்தின் உச்சத்திலும் நாம் சொல்லிக் கதறியிருக்கிறோம். மகிழ்வு, துயரம் இரண்டின் உச்சநிலைகளும் நம்ப முடியாத ஒரு நிலைக்கு நம்மைத் தள்ளிவிடுகின்றன. மகிழ்வின் உச்சிக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்ட இயேசுவின் சீடர்களைப் பற்றி இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் இவ்வாறு வாசிக்கிறோம்:

“சீடர்களோ மகிழ்ச்சி மேலிட்டு, நம்பமுடியாதவர்களாய், வியப்புக்குள்ளாகி இருந்தார்கள்.” (லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 24: 41)

தனது உயிர்ப்பை நம்பமுடியாத அளவு வியப்பும், மகிழ்வும் அடைந்த சீடர்களை இன்னும் அதிகமாய் வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தி, உயிர்ப்பின் வல்லமையை இயேசு அவைகளுக்குக் காட்டியிருக்க வேண்டும். அதற்குப் பதிலாக, தன் உயிர்ப்பை நிரூபிக்க இயேசு செய்தது மிகவும் எளிமையான, சர்வ சாதாரணமான ஒரு செயல். இது நம்மை மேலும் ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்துகிறது. “உண்பதற்கு இங்கே உங்களிடம் ஏதேனும் உண்டா?” என்று இயேசு கேட்கிறார்.

உயிர்த்தபின் இயேசு தன் சீடர்களைச் சந்தித்த பல நிகழ்வுகளில் உணவு ஒரு முக்கிய அங்கமாகிறது. தன் உயிர்ப்பை நிரூபிக்க, சீடர்களின் நம்பிக்கையை வளர்க்க இயேசு உணவை ஒரு கருவியாகப் பயன்படுத்தியதை நாம் இரு கோணங்களில் சிந்திக்கலாம்.

முதல் கோணம்: பொதுவாக எந்த ஒரு குடும்பத்திலும் நிகழ்வது. ஒரு வீட்டில் மரணம் நிகழ்ந்தால், அதுவும் வாழவேண்டிய வயதில் ஒருவர் மரணம் அடைந்தால், அந்தக் குடும்பத்தில் இருக்கும் மற்றவர்கள் தாங்கமுடியாத துயரத்தில் மூழ்குவர். அவர்களின் எண்ணங்களிலிருந்து உணவும், உறக்கமும் விடைபெறும். இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு சூழலில், அக்குடும்பத்தினர் மீது ஆழ்ந்த அக்கறை கொண்டவர்கள் எப்பாடு பட்டாவது அவர்களை உண்ணும்படி வற்புறுத்துவர்.

இந்தக் கோணத்தில் நாம் இயேசுவின் செயலைச் சிந்திக்கலாம். தனது மரணத்தால் மனமுடைந்து போயிருக்கும் சீடர்களும், அன்னை மரியாவும் கடந்த மூன்று நாட்களாக உண்ணாமல் இருந்ததால், அவர்களை மீண்டும் உண்ணும்படி வற்புறுத்தவே இயேசு உணவைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறாரோ என்று நான் எண்ணிப்பார்க்கிறேன். பரிவுள்ள ஒரு தாயின் அன்பு உயிர்த்த இயேசுவில் தொடர்வதைக் காணலாம்.

இரண்டாவது கோணம்: இயேசுவும் அவரது சீடர்களும் கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகள் பணிவாழ்வில் அதிகம் மூழ்கிப் போயிருந்தவர்கள். பலநாட்கள் பணியில் அதிக நேரம் செலவழித்ததால், உண்பதற்கு நேரமோ, சூழலோ சரிவர அமையாமல் தவித்துள்ளனர். அவர்களது பணியால், இறுதி சில மாதங்கள் பகையும் சூழ்ந்தது. எனவே, நிம்மதியாக ஓர் இடத்தில் அமர்ந்து உணவு உண்ட நேரங்கள் மிகக் குறைவே. அப்படி அவர்கள் சேர்ந்து உணவு உண்ட அரிய நேரங்களில், அவர்கள் மத்தியில் உணவு மட்டும் பகிரப்படவில்லை, உணர்வுகளும் பகிரப்பட்டன. இந்த ஆழமான பரிமாற்றங்களின் உச்சமாக மூன்று நாட்களுக்கு முன்  அவர்கள் உண்ட அந்த இறுதி பாஸ்கா இரவுணவு அமைந்தது. அந்த இறுதி இரவுணவின் தாக்கம் இன்னும் அவர்கள் மனதில் ஆழமாய்ப் பதிந்திருந்தது. ஆழ்ந்த உறவுகளை, உண்மைகளை வெளிப்படுத்திய அந்த இரவுணவை மீண்டும் அவர்களுக்கு நினைவுறுத்த, இயேசு உயிர்த்தபின்பும் அவர்களோடு உணவருந்த வந்திருந்தார் என்றும் எண்ணிப் பார்க்கலாம்.

தன் பிரசன்னத்தை உலகில் தொடர்ந்து நிலைநிறுத்த, இறுதி இரவு உணவின்போது இயேசு உணவைப் பயன்படுத்தினார். உயிர்ப்புக்குப் பின் தனது பிரசன்னம் தொடர்கிறது என்பதை மீண்டும் அவர்களுக்கு வலியுறுத்திக் கூறுவதற்காக இயேசு உணவை மீண்டும் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். உயிர்ப்பு என்பது நம்மை வியப்பிலும் பிரமிப்பிலும் ஆழ்த்தும் ஒரு பெரிய மந்திரச் செயல் அல்ல. அது வெகு சாதாரண அன்றாட வாழ்வில் நம்முடன் இணைந்த ஓர் அற்புதம் என்ற ஓர் உண்மையை இந்த உணவுப் பகிர்தலில் இயேசு சொல்லித் தந்தார். இந்த நிகழ்வின் மூலம் இயேசு தன் சீடர்களிடம் சொல்லாமல் சொன்னது இதுதான்:

"கல்வாரிச் சிலுவையும், கல்லறையும் நம் உறவை அறுத்துவிட்டதென நீங்கள் எண்ணுகிறீர்கள். சிலுவையும், கல்லறையும் நம் உறவை அழித்துவிட முடியாது.  உங்களுடன் இத்தனை ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்த நான், இதோ உங்களோடு வாழ்வைத் தொடர வந்துள்ளேன். எனவே, உண்பதற்கு இங்கே உங்களிடம் ஏதேனும் உண்டா?" என்று இயேசு கேட்டார். உணவின் வழியாக, உயிர்ப்பைப்பற்றி, தொடரும் தன் உறவைப்பற்றி இதைவிட அழகான பாடங்கள் சொல்லமுடியுமா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான்.

உணவின் வழியாக உயிர்ப்பின் பெரும் உண்மையைக் கூறிய இயேசு, அதற்கு முன்னதாக, காயப்பட்ட தன் கரங்களையும், கால்களையும் சீடர்களுக்குக் காட்டுகிறார். மற்றுமொரு எளிமையான அடையாளம். Tolstoy எழுதிய ஒரு சிறுகதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. ஒரு நாட்டின் அரசன் தன் அவையில் பணிபுரியும் அனைவருக்கும் விருந்தொன்றை ஏற்பாடு செய்தார். அனைவருக்கும் அழைப்பிதழை அனுப்பினார். விருந்துக்கு வருபவர்கள் தங்கள் அழைப்பிதழைக் கையோடு கொண்டு வரவேண்டும் என்றும் வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்தார். அந்த விருந்தில் அரசனுக்கு அருகில் அமரும் வாய்ப்பு யாருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் அனைவரும் அழைப்பிதழைக் கொண்டு வந்திருந்தனர். விருந்து மண்டபத்தில் நுழைந்தபோது, அவர்களுக்கு ஆச்சரியம் ஒன்று காத்திருந்தது. வாயில் காப்பவர்கள் அவர்கள் கொண்டு வந்திருந்த அழைப்பிதழைப் பார்க்கவில்லை, மாறாக, அவர்கள் உள்ளங்கைகளைப் பார்த்தனர். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் அரண்மனையைக் கூட்டி, கழுவி சுத்தம் செய்யும் பணிப்பெண்ணின் கைகளைப் பார்த்த வீரர்கள், "அரசரின் சிறப்பு விருந்தினராக அமரும் வாய்ப்பு உங்களுக்கே உள்ளது. அரசர் மீது நீங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள விசுவாசமும், அன்பும் உங்கள் கைகளில் தெரிகிறது" என்று சொல்லி, அவரை அழைத்துச் சென்று அரசனுக்கு அருகே அமர வைத்தனர்.

வெடித்துச் சிதறிய கல்லறை, மேலிருந்து கீழ்வரை இரண்டாகக் கிழிந்த திருக்கோவிலின் திரை என்ற அடையாளங்களைவிட, ஆணிகள் அறைந்த இயேசுவின் காயப்பட்ட கரங்களும், கால்களும் சீடர்களின் மனங்களில் உயிர்ப்பின் அடையாளங்களாய் ஆழமாய்ப் பதிந்தன.

உயிர்ப்பு என்ற ஆழமான ஓர் உண்மையை வெகு வெகு எளிதான வாழ்வு அனுபவங்களின் வழியாக இயேசு எடுத்துரைத்ததால், சீடர்களின் உள்ளங்களில் இந்த மறையுண்மை வெகு ஆழமாகப் பதிந்தது. இந்த மறையுண்மைக்காக தங்கள் உயிரையும் தியாகம் செய்யும் அளவுக்கு அவர்கள் வாழ்வு மாறியது. உயிர்ப்பை ஒரு மாயச் சக்தியாக இறைமகன் இயேசு காட்டியிருந்தால், ஒரு நொடிப்பொழுது வியப்பில் சீடர்கள் பரவசம் அடைந்திருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அவர்கள் வாழ்வு மாறியிருக்குமா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான். வாழ்வை மாற்றும் ஒரு சக்தியாக இயேசு உயிர்ப்பைக் காட்டியதால், அதன் தாக்கம் சீடர்களின் வாழ்வு முழுவதும் தொடர்ந்தது.

மனித உறவுகளை அறுப்பதில் மிகவும் உறுதியான, முடிவான துண்டிப்பு சாவு என்று நாம் நம்புகிறோம். அந்தச் சாவும் உண்மையிலேயே ஒரு முடிவு அல்ல, கல்லறைக்குப் பின்னும் உறவுகள் தொடரும் என்பதைக் கூறும் மறையுண்மையே உயிர்ப்பு. அந்த மறையுண்மையை உணவு, காயப்பட்ட கரங்கள், கால்கள் போன்ற எளிதான மனித நிகழ்வுகளின் மூலம் இயேசு இன்று நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தந்ததற்காக அவருக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம்.

கடவுள் மந்திர மாயங்கள் செய்யும் மந்திரவாதி அல்ல. நம் வாழ்வில் தொடர்ந்து மாற்றங்கள் செய்யும் அன்பர் அவர்.

மாயங்கள் செய்து மலைக்க வைப்பது மந்திரவாதியின் கைவண்ணம்.

வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்கள் செய்து நிலைக்க வைப்பது இறைவனின் அருள்வண்ணம்.
