21^st December, 2012 began and ended without much consequence. Although there were a few activities around the Mayan ruins in South America (Mexico and Gautemala) and around the village and nearby mountain of Bugarach, France, the day went by pretty quietly. We are alive and the world is alive! That is what matters. Now we can look forward to Christmas with some excitement.

As we look forward to Christmas, my mind inadvertently turns to the business people for whom Christmas is over. They began Christmas a month back. For them, there is nothing more to sell in the name of Christmas. On a deeper analysis, one can see that the name of Christmas is slowly fading away from the festive package promoted by the business world.

The business world would move on to the next event or festival since they have had their fill of Christmas. They don’t have any more need for Christmas until… the next year! For us, Christmas is just beginning. We need to take Christmas to all those who need peace and joy. Instead of filling our Christmas with gifts as did the business world, we need to become gifts – as shown by Mary and Elizabeth in the scene of Visitation.

One Christmas, while his nation was suffering a terrible civil war, Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke these words: “No one can celebrate a genuine Christmas without being truly poor. The self-sufficient, the proud, those who, because they have everything, look down on others, those who have no need even of God - for them there will be no Christmas... Only the poor, the hungry, those who need someone to come on their behalf, will have that someone. That someone is God, Emmanuel, God with us.”

Our story from today’s Gospel features two women, Mary and Elizabeth who were in need of God. One can even say that they were desperately in need of God. Elizabeth’s need was more personal than that of Mary’s. Elizabeth wanted God o redeem her from the cruel condemnation her society had heaped upon her for being barren. Mary wanted God to redeem her society suffering under the tyranny of the Roman occupation as well as from other forms of slavery. God fulfils their needs … and how!

The Gospel gives us the famous scene of the Visitation. The barren woman and the virgin met to recount what the Lord had done in their lives. (Luke 1: 39-45) Both Elizabeth and Mary were invited by God to bear witness to one great truth, namely, that nothing is impossible for God. Both knew that there was no logical explanation to what they were asked to do… rather, what they were asked to be. Both said almost a blind ‘yes’ relying on God and God alone. They did not have any other support – not even their families. Even their families would not have understood their position: the barren woman, quite advanced in age, conceiving? Unthinkable, they would have said. A virgin conceiving out of wedlock? Unthinkable, unacceptable, unpardonable. They would have stoned her to death.

Perhaps for us living in the 21st century such news would not create any excitement. With all the advanced biotechnology at our disposal, the barren can easily conceive. With the unbridled life-style prevalent today, the virgin shall conceive… what is so great about this? I can well imagine many of us asking this question with a shrug of the shoulders. What is so great about this? A typical question for our times.

Nothing seems great, nothing seems wonderful. Our generation seems to have lost the sense of wonder. If this is the case with us, what will happen to the generationext? The word ‘wonder’ may vanish from their dictionary! What a pity!

Setting aside our brainy questions, let us look at this event with a believing heart. As the Bible constantly illustrates, God's timing usually takes us by surprise. Sometimes, as with Elizabeth, God moves too slowly. Sometimes, as with Mary, he moves too quickly. Like Elizabeth, some of us have been praying for a long time for something to happen. We began to think that it might never happen. Obviously we could not make it happen, because if we could have, we would have. Clearly, we are not in control. On the other hand, like Mary, some of us find that too many things happened too quickly in our lives. God had conceived something in our life that we didn't ask for. We were thrust into situations we never bargained for. Clearly, we are not in control either.

Whether nothing seems to be happening in our lives, or whether too many things are happening in our lives, we need to have the humility to let go and allow God to enter our lives. This is the core of Christmas. The challenge of Christmas.

It is fascinating that, according to Luke's gospel, after Mary discovered that she would give birth to the Messiah the first person she went to, with haste, was not Joseph or her parents but her relative Elizabeth whose life was also clearly out of control. Mary probably thought that only Elizabeth would understand her situation. Elizabeth not only understood Mary but blessed her in some of the most beautiful words a human person can ever hear.

In blessing Mary, Elizabeth blessed herself. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, we are told that the child within her leapt for joy. When Elizabeth experienced this, her only question was to ask, "And why has this happened to me that the mother of my Lord comes to me?" Why me?

We are a people who want to make sense of our lives. We wish to find and give explanations. No adequate explanations come forth. We find it hard to explain the tragedies that occur in our lives and around us. It is harder still to explain the blessings that have come to us without reason. "Why me," we ask. The explanations are not there.

Elizabeth asked the “why” question and did not get an answer. Mary asked the “how” question at the annunciation. She too did not get an adequate answer. When they met, they still had lots of unanswered questions locked up within. But, they did not ‘waste’ their time in a question-and-answer session. They did not indulge in any intellectual arguments. They simply allowed themselves to be drenched in God’s shower of blessings. Simply exclamations. No explanations.

Trying to explain life is only another way of trying to control it. One of the central messages of Christmas is that we are not in control of the blessings. There is no logic to a blessing, only gratitude. We pray that during this Christmas we may be like Mary and Elizabeth accepting the gifts that come our way with childlike gratitude.

Just a closing thought… All of us know the famous myth of ‘The Frog and the Princess’. We know that the ugly frog turns into a handsome prince once it is kissed by the princess. It is said that once the TV show "Sesame Street" had put a twist on this myth, namely, that once the princess kisses the frog, she turns into a frog herself. This is closer to the Christmas story where God kisses the human family and becomes one among us!

21-12-2012 வந்தது, போனது... உலகம் இன்னும் இயங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. நாம் இன்னும் வாழ்கிறோம். டிசம்பர் 21, இவ்வெள்ளிக்கிழமையன்று, உலகம் அழிந்துவிடும் என்ற வதந்தி பல நாடுகளில் பரவியிருந்தது. இந்த வதந்தியையொட்டி, மெக்சிகோ மற்றும் கவுதமாலா ஆகிய நாடுகளில் மாயன் கலாச்சாரத்தின் பழமைச் சின்னங்களாக விளங்கும் கோவில்கள் அருகே மக்கள் கூடி நின்றனர். அதேபோல், பிரான்ஸ் நாட்டின் Bugarach என்ற குன்றைத் தேடி மக்கள் சென்றனர். இந்த மக்கள் கூட்டத்தில் ஒரு பகுதியினர் எல்லாம் முடியப்போகிறது என்ற பயத்துடன் காத்திருந்தனர். மற்றொரு பகுதியினர் புதிதாக எல்லாம் ஆரம்பமாகப்போகிறது என்ற எண்ணத்தைக் கொண்டாடக் கூடியிருந்தனர். ஒரே நாள்... ஒரே நேரம்... ஒரே செய்தியின் இருவேறு கண்ணோட்டங்கள்... ஒன்று மட்டும் உறுதி. இன்றைய ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையை நாம் பகிர்ந்துகொள்கிறோம் என்றால், நாம் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறோம், நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள உலகம் இன்னும் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது உறுதி. நம்மையும், உலகையும் வாழவைக்கும் உறுதியை வழங்க வரும் கிறிஸ்துவின் பிறப்பை நாம் நெருங்கி வந்துள்ளோம்.

'தவளையும், இளவரசியும்' என்ற பழங்காலக் கதை நமக்கு நினைவிருக்கலாம். இக்கதையில், அழகான ஓர் இளவரசி, அழகில்லாத ஒரு தவளையை முத்தமிடுவார். உடனே, அத்தவளை அழகான ஓர் இளவரசனாக மாறும். 'Sesame Street' என்ற ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சித் தொடரில், இக்கதை மாற்றி அமைக்கப்பட்டது. அதாவது, அத்தவளையை இளவரசி முத்தமிட்டதும், அவர் தவளையாக மாறிவிடுவார்.

இறைவன் மனிதராவதை இக்கண்ணோட்டத்தில் நாம் சிந்திக்கலாம். இறைவன் மனுக்குலத்தை முத்தமிட்டதால், அவரே நம்மில் ஒருவராக மாறியதைக் கொண்டாடும் விழாதான், கிறிஸ்மஸ் பெருவிழா. இப்பெருவிழாவை நாம் நெருங்கியுள்ளோம்.

கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா நெருங்கியுள்ளது என்று வியாபார, விளம்பர உலகத்தினரிடம் சொல்லிப் பாருங்கள். அவர்கள் நம்மைப் பார்த்து சிரிப்பர். அவர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை, கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா ஒரு மாதத்திற்கு முன் துவங்கியது... அந்த விழாக்காலம் நாளையோடு முடிவடையும். கிறிஸ்துபிறப்பை மூலதனமாக்கி, வியாபார, விளம்பர உலகம் விற்பதற்கு இனி ஒன்றும் இல்லை. இன்னும் ஆழமாக ஆராய்ந்தால், கிறிஸ்மஸ் விற்பனைக்கு வியாபார உலகம் பயன்படுத்தும் அடையாளங்களில் கிறிஸ்துபிறப்பு என்ற மையமான உண்மையும், கிறிஸ்மஸ் என்ற வார்த்தையும் பெரும்பாலும் மறைந்துள்ளதை நாம் உணரலாம். நம்மைப் பொருத்தவரை, நாளைதான் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா ஆரம்பமாகும். கிறிஸ்துபிறப்பை மூலதனமாக்கி, இப்பெருவிழாவின் மகிழ்வை இன்னும் பல நாட்கள்... ஏன், முடிந்தால், வருடம் முழுவதும் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள நாம் அழைக்கப்படுகிறோம்.

மீட்பர் வருகிறார் என்ற மகிழ்வைப் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள இளம் பெண் மரியாவும், வயதில் முதிர்ந்த எலிசபெத்தும் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் சந்திக்கின்றனர், நம்மையும் சந்திக்க வருகின்றனர். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் மரியாவும், எலிசபெத்தும் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்கள் பல உள்ளன. இவ்விருவரும் தங்கள் வாழ்வில் இறைவனைத் தேடியவர்கள். தன்னைத் தேடியவர்களைத் தேற்ற இறைவன் வந்தார் என்பதை ஆணித்தரமாக உணர்த்தும் ஓர் அற்புத விழாவே கிறிஸ்மஸ்... இது நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரப்படும் முதல் பாடம்.

இலத்தீன் அமெரிக்க நாடுகளில் ஒன்றான எல் சால்வதோரின் தலைநகரான சான் சால்வதோரில் பணிபுரிந்தவர் புகழ்பெற்ற பேராயர் ஆஸ்கர் ரொமேரோ. உள்நாட்டுப் போரில் துன்புற்ற எல் சால்வதோர் மக்களுக்கு பேராயர் ரொமேரோ வெளியிட்ட கிறிஸ்மஸ் செய்தியின் ஒரு பகுதி இது:

"உண்மையில் ஏழையாக மாறாதவர்கள் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவைக் கொண்டாடமுடியாது. தன்னிடம் எல்லாமே உள்ளன, தான் மட்டுமே தனக்குப் போதும் என்ற மமதையில் வாழ்பவர்களுக்கு இறைவன் தேவைப்படுவதில்லை. அவர்களுக்குக் கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பும் தேவைப்படுவதில்லை. ஏழைகள், பசியுற்றோர், தேவையில் இருப்போர்... இவர்களாலேயே கிறிஸ்துபிறப்பு விழாவில் பொருள் காண முடியும். அவர்களைத் தேடியே எம்மானுவேல், அதாவது, 'கடவுள் நம்மோடு' என்ற பெயர் தாங்கிய இறைவன் வருவார்."

இறைவனைத் தேடியவர்கள் மரியாவும், எலிசபெத்தும்... அவர்களுக்கு இறைவன் வெகுவாகத் தேவைப்பட்டார். குழந்தைப்பேறு இல்லாமல் தவித்த எலிசபெத்து, தன் சொந்த வாழ்வின் குறையைத் தீர்க்க இறைவனை இரவும் பகலும் தேடினார். இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்.

மரியா என்ற இளம்பெண்ணும் இறைவனைத் தேடினார். தன் சொந்தத் தேவைகளைக் காட்டிலும், சமுதாயத்தின் தேவைகளுக்காக அவர் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார். அவர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், யூதேயா முழுவதும் உரோமைய ஆதிக்கம், அராஜகம். இந்த அடக்குமுறையை உறுதிப்படுத்த உரோமைய அரசு, படை வீரர்களை அதிகம் பயன்படுத்தியது. அடுத்த நாட்டை அடக்கியாளச் செல்லும் படைவீரர்களால் அதிகம் பாதிக்கப்படுவது அந்த நாட்டில் வாழும் பெண்கள்... முக்கியமாக, இளம்பெண்கள். பகலோ, இரவோ எந்நேரத்திலும் இப்பெண்களுக்குப் படைவீர்களால் ஏற்படும் ஆபத்துகள் ஏராளம். அந்நியப் படைவீரர்களால் ஆக்கிரமிக்கப்பட்ட ஆப்கானிஸ்தான், ஈராக், போன்ற நாடுகளில் வாழும் பெண்களைக் கேளுங்கள்... அங்கு ஏராளமான கண்ணீர் கதைகள் வெளிவரும்.

தன் சொந்த நாட்டிலேயே இரவும் பகலும் சிறையிலடைக்கப்பட்டதைப் போல் உணர்ந்த மரியா இறைவனைத் தேடினார். "இந்த அவல நிலையிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க ஒரு வழியைக் காட்டமாட்டாயா இறைவா?" என்ற வேண்டுதலை அவர் கண்ணீரோடு அடிக்கடி எழுப்பி வந்தார். மரியா எழுப்பிவந்த வேண்டுதல்களுக்கு விடை வந்தது. எப்படிப்பட்ட விடை அது! மணமாகாத அவரை தாயாகுமாறு அழைத்தார் இறைவன்.

இது அழைப்பு அல்ல. தீர்ப்பு. மரணதண்டனைக்கான தீர்ப்பு. மணமாகாத இளம் பெண்கள் தாயானால், அவர்களை ஊருக்கு நடுவே நிறுத்தி கல்லால் எறிந்து கொல்லவேண்டும் என்பது யூதர்களின் சட்டம். இதை நன்கு அறிந்திருந்தார் மரியா. அதுவும் உரோமையப் படைவீரர்களால் பாலியல் வன்முறைகளுக்கு உள்ளாகி, கருவுற்ற பல இளம்பெண்கள் இவ்வகையில் கொல்லப்பட்டதை மரியா நேரில் கண்டிருக்கவேண்டும். பின்னர் தனிமையில் வந்து கதறி அழுதிருக்க வேண்டும்.

மணமாகாமல் தாயாகும் நிலைக்கு தான் அழைக்கப்படுவதை மரியா உணர்ந்தார். இறைவன் தந்த இவ்வழைப்பிற்கு சரி என்று சொல்வதும், மரணதண்டனையைத் தனக்குத் தானே வழங்கிக்கொள்வதும், விருப்பப்பட்டு தூக்குக் கயிறை எடுத்து, கழுத்தில் மாட்டிக்கொள்வதும்... எல்லாம் ஒன்று தான். இருந்தாலும், அந்த இறைவன் மேல் அத்தனை அதீத நம்பிக்கை அந்த இளம் பெண்ணுக்கு. 'இதோ உமது அடிமை' என்று சொன்னார் மரியா. அவரது நம்பிக்கையை வளர்க்கும் வண்ணம் வானதூதர் இன்னொரு செய்தியைச் சொன்னார். அவரது உறவினராகிய எலிசபெத்து கருதரித்திருக்கிறார் என்பதே அச்செய்தி. குழந்தைப்பேறு இல்லாமல், அழுது புலம்பி, ஊராரின் பழிச்சொற்களைக் கேட்டு, கேட்டு மனம் வெறுத்து வீட்டுக்குள் தன்னையே சிறைபடுத்திக்கொண்ட எலிசபெத்தைச் சந்திக்க மரியா சென்றார். இந்தச் சந்திப்பை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்குக் கூறுகிறது. 

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 1: 39-45

அக்காலத்தில் மரியா புறப்பட்டு யூதேய மலைநாட்டிலுள்ள ஓர் ஊருக்கு விரைந்து சென்றார். அவர் செக்கரியாவின் வீட்டை அடைந்து எலிசபெத்தை வாழ்த்தினார். மரியாவின் வாழ்த்தை எலிசபெத்து கேட்டபொழுது அவர் வயிற்றிலிருந்த குழந்தை மகிழ்ச்சியால் துள்ளிற்று. எலிசபெத்து தூய ஆவியால் முற்றிலும் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டார். அப்போது அவர் உரத்த குரலில், “பெண்களுக்குள் நீர் ஆசி பெற்றவர்; உம் வயிற்றில் வளரும் குழந்தையும் ஆசி பெற்றதே! என் ஆண்டவரின் தாய் என்னிடம் வர நான் யார்? உம் வாழ்த்துரை என் காதில் விழுந்ததும் என் வயிற்றினுள்ளே குழந்தை பேருவகையால் துள்ளிற்று. ஆண்டவர் உமக்குச் சொன்னவை நிறைவேறும் என்று நம்பிய நீர் பேறுபெற்றவர்” என்றார்.

இறைவன் நம் வாழ்வில் செயலாற்றும் அழகை இவ்விரு பெண்களின் வாழ்வும் நமக்குக் கூறுகிறது. எலிசபெத்தின் வாழ்வில் இறைவன் மெதுவாக, மிக, மிகத் தாமதமாகச் செயல்பட்டார். ஆண்டுகள் பலவாய் குழந்தைப்பேற்றுக்காக எலிசபெத்து வேண்டிவந்தார். வயது கூட, கூட, இனி தன் வாழ்வில் குழந்தைப்பேறு இல்லையென்ற தீர்மானத்திற்கு அவர் வந்த வேளையில், இறைவன் அவர் வாழ்வில் குறிக்கிட்டார். நம்ப முடியாத ஒரு செயலை நிகழ்த்தினார். நாமும் வாழ்வில் பல ஆண்டுகளாய் வேண்டிக் காத்திருந்த ஒரு காரியம், திடீரென எந்த முன்னறிவிப்பும் இல்லாமல் நிறைவேறுவதில்லையா?

மரியாவின் வாழ்வில் இறைவன் மிக வேகமாகச் செயல்பட்டார். மீட்புக்காக மரியா காத்திருந்தது உண்மை; ஆனால், அந்த மீட்புக்கு அவரே வழியாக வேண்டும் என்பதை அவரால் நினைத்துகூட பார்க்கமுடியவில்லை. மிகத் தாமதமாகவோ, அல்லது புயல் வேகத்திலோ வாழ்வில் காரியங்கள் நடக்கும்போது, கூடவே கேள்விகள் பலவும் எழுகின்றன. ஏன் எனக்கு? ஏன் இப்போது? இதுபோன்ற கேள்விகள் மரியாவின் உள்ளத்திலும், எலிசபெத்தின் உள்ளத்திலும் கட்டாயம் எழுந்திருக்கவேண்டும்.

கேள்விகள் எழுவது இயற்கை. ஆனால், எல்லாக் கேள்விகளுக்கும் விடைகள், விளக்கங்கள் கிடைக்காது. மரியா வானதூதரைச் சந்தித்தபோதும், மரியாவும், எலிசபெத்தும் சந்தித்தபோதும் ஒரு சில கேள்விகள் வெளிப்பட்டன. பல கேள்விகள் அவர்கள் மனதில் அடைபட்டிருந்தன. அவர்கள் சந்தித்தபோது, இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்கெல்லாம் விளக்கங்களைத் தேடவில்லை. கேள்விகள் கார் மேகங்களாக அவர்களைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்தாலும், அந்த மேகங்களிலிருந்து பெய்த இறைவனின் கருணை என்ற மழையில் அவர்கள் நனைந்தனர். கடவுளைக் கேள்விக் கணைகளால் துளைப்பதற்குப் பதில், கடவுளின் கருணை மழையில் நனைவது மேலான ஒரு வழி. இது மரியாவும் எலிசபெத்தும் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தரும் இரண்டாவது பாடம்...

இவ்விருவருக்கும் இடையே நிகழ்ந்த அச்சந்திப்பு ஒருவரை ஒருவர் வாழ்த்துவதிலும், ஆசீர்வதிப்பதிலும், இறைவனைப் புகழ்வதிலுமே நிறைந்தது. எலிசபெத்து மரியாவைப் புகழ்ந்த மொழிகள் மனிதர் ஒவ்வொருவரும் கேட்கவேண்டிய, சொல்லவேண்டிய அழகான ஆசி மொழிகள்... "பெண்களுக்குள் நீர் ஆசி பெற்றவர்; உம் வயிற்றில் வளரும் குழந்தையும் ஆசி பெற்றதே!" நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தினமும் மற்றவர்களை இப்படி வாழ்த்தினால், ஆசீர்வதித்தால் இந்த பூமியில் எவ்வளவு நலம் வளரும்! பிறரை வாழ்த்தும்போது, ஆசீர்வதிக்கும்போது நாமும் வாழ்த்தப்பெறுகிறோம், ஆசீர் பெறுகிறோம். வயதில் முதிர்ந்தவர்கள், "மவராசனா இரு" என்று வாழ்த்தும்போது எழும் நிறைவு, கேட்பவரையும் நிறைக்கிறது, கொடுப்பவரையும் நிறைக்கிறது. மரியாவும், எலிசபெத்தும் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தரும் மூன்றாவது பாடம் இது.

நல்லவைகள் வாழ்வில் நடக்கும்போது, கேள்விகள் கேட்டு, விடைகள், விளக்கங்கள் தேடி நம் அறிவை நிரப்புவதற்குப் பதில், நன்றியால் நம் மனதை நிரப்ப முயல்வோம். கருமேகங்களாய் சூழ்ந்துவரும் பிரச்சனைகள் மத்தியில் மின்னல் கீற்றுபோலத் தோன்றும் நல்லவற்றை உறுதியாகப் பற்றிக்கொள்ளவும், அந்த நல்ல செய்திகளை நான்கு பேரோடு பகிர்ந்து, நம்பிக்கையை வளர்க்கவும் மரியா, எலிசபெத்து என்ற இரு அற்புதப் பெண்கள் வழியாகப் பாடங்களைப் பயில்வோம்.
