We begin
this Sunday’s reflection with some ‘politics’. The word ‘politics’ has become unacceptable, especially in religious contexts. This is because politics is identified
with party politics played by our politicians. Today’s Gospel from Luke Chapter
4: 16-21 inspired me to think of ‘politics’ in its original, right sense.
We begin
with two historical events and two recent events… On January 26, 1950, India India Indian Republic India
The second
historical event that draws our attention today is the International Holocaust
Remembrance Day observed on January 27th every year. This is an
international memorial day for the victims of the Holocaust, the genocide that
resulted in the annihilation of millions of Jews and other innocent people by
the Nazi regime and its collaborators. This day was designated by the United
Nations General Assembly, since on January 27, 1945, the prisoners of the
largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, were liberated by the Soviet
troops. The Republic Day of India as well as the International Holocaust
Remembrance Day strongly drive home the message that the world stands in need
of liberation, STILL!
Jesus
proclaimed that he was anointed to proclaim liberation to captives. Luke 4:
16-21 is one of my favourite passages in the Bible. This is popularly known as
the Manifesto of Jesus – his inaugural address before he took up his public
ministry. Unfortunately, the word ‘manifesto’ has many shady connotations now,
since the word has been misused by political parties and candidates. Recently
two such ‘manifesto’s were brought to my notice – the speech given by Rahul
Gandhi while he assumed a key position in his political party, and the speech
given by Barack Obama when he assumed the leadership of the U.S. government for
the second term. I have not paid close attention to both these talks due to my
prejudicial notions of both these leaders. In general, when political leaders
speak, I have hard time trying to turn off my internal speaker which seems to
discredit whatever they are saying.
As against
such empty rhetoric, it would help us to analyse the manifesto or Jesus given in
today’s gospel. It is quite interesting to see that Jesus did not create this
manifesto. He simply borrowed it from Isaiah. Real leaders speak to the people
from their hearts; they are not interested in being brilliantly original. They
are more interested in getting the attention of the people and inspiring them
with hope rather than getting their applause. Jesus did this in Nazareth
Jesus spoke
this punch line when all eyes were turned on him. Hence, his words must have
gone home. What was so special about these words? The word ‘Today’ was special.
Let me explain.
The Israelites
living at the time of Jesus were trained to look to the future. Many of their
teachers and religious leaders had insisted on the time to come. That was a
safer bet than telling them that salvation had already come, since things
looked as miserable as before. Jesus changed that perspective. He said TODAY
fulfilment had come.
We have
surely heard of the famous phrase: Grace of the Present Moment.
Jesus lived the present, the here-and-now moment all his life. He tried his
best to instil this thought into his people through his words and deeds. In his
miracle at Cana (labelled as his first sign),
“he told the workers, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of
the banquet.’” (John 2:8). When Jesus told the workers ‘now’, it was not clear
whether water had turned into wine. Still, the workers did it and it was
already wine! Perhaps this was Jesus’ way of teaching people to trust the here
and now!
When he
asked the ten leprosy patients to go and show themselves to the priests, they
were not cured yet. As they were going, they were healed. (Luke 17). Similarly,
he tells the paralytic to carry his bed and walk immediately. (Matthew 9). The
miracle of feeding the people stranded in the desert once again illustrates
that Jesus believed in the here and now. When the disciples asked Jesus to send
the people away, he asked them how much food they had there and then. (Mark
6:38) He began the miracle with what they had, not with what they would have or
could have had.
In the
famous prayer taught by Jesus, he asks us to pray: ‘Give us TODAY our daily
bread.’
The
crowning moment of this ‘here and now’ creed came out when he was hanging on
the cross. One of the two men crucified along with Jesus, made an impossible
request, namely, to give him a place in the Kingdom. How could someone think of
a Kingdom while hanging on a cross? Anyone in that position would have given up
on the Kingdom or, at least, postponed such thoughts. If Jesus were a normal
political leader, he could have poured out his anger and desperation on the guy
who was talking of the Kingdom. Not Jesus. Although he was fighting for every
breath on the cross, Jesus still spoke with assurance, “I tell you the truth, TODAY
you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) What better proof is needed to say
that Jesus was a PRESENT, HERE-AND-NOW person. The grace of the present
moment was overflowing in him.
Living in
the present moment is a real challenge. A quick look at a typical day in our
life would prove this point. The moment we wake up, many thoughts crowd our
mind… most of them either memories of what happened the previous day,
especially the sad ones, or anxieties of the day ahead of us. I am not sure how
many of us notice the myriad little miracles that happen around us day after
day… like the water that refreshes our mouth and face every morning, the
exercises that awaken the body fully. If we are in the habit of doing yoga, or
meditation in the morning, I don’t know how many of us are aware of the cool
air that enters our nostrils when we breathe in and the hot air that is
breathed out.
How many of
us eat our meals, not being involved in what we are doing? The result? More
visits to the doctor! Being more and more involved in the here and now,
cherishing the ‘grace of the present moment’ can help not only our soul but
also our body.
If only we
are totally involved with the present moment, we can surely avoid many, many
mistakes and subsequent regrets. Living in regrets is one sure way to kill
TODAY. Jesus told the people in Nazareth
Today,
if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts… (Psalm 95: 7-8)

நாம் சிந்திக்கும் மற்றொரு வரலாற்று
நினைவு நாள் - ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் சனவரி 27ம் தேதி கடைபிடிக்கப்படும் 'அகில உலக தகன நினைவு நாள்' (International
Holocaust Remembrance Day). இரண்டாம் உலகப் போரின்போது உருவாக்கப்பட்ட நாத்சி வதை முகாம்கள், மனித வரலாற்றில்
ஆழமான காயங்களை விட்டுச் சென்றுள்ளன. இந்த மரண முகாம்களிலேயே மிகப் பெரிய Auschwitz-Birkenau முகாம்களில் இருந்தோரை 1945ம் ஆண்டு
சனவரி 27ம் தேதி இரஷ்யப் படையினர் விடுவித்தனர். இந்த நாளின் நினைவாக, சனவரி 27ம் தேதி ‘அகில உலக தகன நினைவு நாள்’ எனக் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்தியக் குடியரசு நாளும், அகில உலக தகன நினைவு நாளும் சொல்லும் அடிப்படை செய்தி... உண்மையான
மனித விடுதலை அனைவருக்கும் தேவை!
பல வடிவங்களில் தளையுண்டிருக்கும் மனிதர்களுக்கு
விடுதலை வழங்கவே தான் அருள்பொழிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளதாக இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் முழங்குகிறார்
இயேசு. தன் பணிவாழ்வின் துவக்கத்தில் அவர் ஆற்றிய முதல் உரை லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 4ம் பிரிவில்
இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. “ஆண்டவருடைய ஆவி என்மேல் உளது” என்று ஆரம்பமாகும் நற்செய்தி வார்த்தைகள் இயேசு தன் பணிவாழ்வைத்
துவக்கியபோது அறிவித்த 'கொள்கை விளக்க அறிக்கை' (Manifesto)!
பொதுப்பணியைத் துவக்கும் பலர்
முக்கியமான உரைகள் நிகழ்த்துவதைக் காண்கிறோம். அண்மையில் இரு அரசியல் தலைவர்கள் நிகழ்த்திய
உரைகளை நாம் கேட்டிருப்போம், வாசித்திருப்போம், விமர்சனமும் செய்திருப்போம். இந்திய அரசியல் கட்சியொன்றின் முக்கிய பொறுப்பை ஏற்ற
இராகுல் காந்தியும், இரண்டாம் முறையாக அமெரிக்க அரசுத் தலைவர்
பொறுப்பை ஏற்ற பாரக் ஒபாமாவும் ஆற்றிய உரைகள் இவை. மக்களுக்காக உழைப்பதே தங்கள் கனவு
என்பதை இவ்விருவரின் உரைகளும் பல வழிகளில் உணர்த்த முயன்றன.
உலகத் தலைவர்களின் உரைகளை கேட்கும்போது, அவர்கள் சொல்வதை முற்றிலும் ஏற்றுகொள்ள முடியாமல் போராடுகிறோம். இதற்குக் காரணம்...
உரையாற்றும் தலைவருக்கும், அவரது கூற்றுகளுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள முரண்பாடுகள்.
இவரை நமக்குத் தெரியாதா? இவர் சொல்வதற்கும், இவரது வாழ்வுக்கும் தொடர்பில்லையே என்ற
எண்ணங்கள் உள்ளத்தில் ஒலித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்.
தன் பணிவாழ்வின் துவக்கத்தில் இயேசு
ஆற்றிய உரையை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இவ்விதம் கூறுகிறது:
லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 4: 16-21
இயேசு தாம் வளர்ந்த ஊராகிய நாசரேத்துக்கு
வந்தார். தமது வழக்கத்தின்படி ஓய்வுநாளில் தொழுகைக் கூடத்திற்குச் சென்று வாசிக்க எழுந்தார்.
இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயாவின் சுருளேடு அவரிடம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. அவர் அதைப் பிரித்தபோது
கண்ட பகுதியில் இவ்வாறு எழுதியிருந்தது: “ஆண்டவருடைய ஆவி என்மேல் உளது; ஏனெனில், அவர் எனக்கு அருள்பொழிவு செய்துள்ளார். ஏழைகளுக்கு நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்கவும் சிறைப்பட்டோர்
விடுதலை அடைவர், பார்வையற்றோர் பார்வைபெறுவர்
என முழக்கமிடவும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை விடுதலை செய்து அனுப்பவும் ஆண்டவர் அருள்தரும் ஆண்டினை
முழக்கமிட்டு அறிவிக்கவும் அவர் என்னை அனுப்பியுள்ளார்.” பின்னர் அந்த ஏட்டைச் சுருட்டி ஏவலரிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டு அமர்ந்தார்.
தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் இருந்தவர்களின் கண்கள் அனைத்தும் அவரையே உற்று நோக்கியிருந்தன. அப்பொழுது
அவர் அவர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் கேட்ட இந்த மறைநூல் வாக்கு இன்று நிறைவேறிற்று” என்றார்.
இயேசுவின் இந்த அற்புத உரையைப் பல்வேறு
கோணங்களில் நாம் சிந்திக்கலாம். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் அவர் சொல்லியிருக்கும்
ஒரே ஒரு கூற்றை மட்டும் சிறிது ஆழ்ந்து சிந்திக்க உங்களை அழைக்கிறேன்... “நீங்கள் கேட்ட இந்த மறைநூல் வாக்கு இன்று நிறைவேறிற்று”
இன்றைய நாளில், இந்தப் பொழுதில் வாழ்வதென்பது அவ்வளவு எளிதல்ல. இயேசு வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், நாளை
நல்ல காலம் பிறக்கும் என்று கனவு காண்பதற்கு யூதர்கள் அதிகம் பழகிப் போயிருந்தனர்.
நாளை நமக்கு விடிவு வரும் என்று அடிக்கடி பேசிவந்த அவர்களிடம், அந்தத் தொழுகைக் கூடத்தில், இன்று, இப்போது, இங்கே... நிறைவு, விடிவு, மீட்பு வந்து விட்டது என்று இயேசு அழுத்தந்திருத்தமாய் கூறினார்.
இயேசு உலகில் வாழ்ந்தபோது ஒவ்வொரு நாளையும், ஒவ்வொரு பொழுதையும் முழுமையாக வாழ்ந்தவர். நேற்று, நாளை என்பதெல்லாம் அவர் மனதை, வாழ்வை ஆக்ரமிக்கவில்லை. ஆக்ரமிக்க
விடவில்லை அவர். அவர் ஆற்றிய புதுமைகள், சொன்ன சொற்கள், இவைகளைச் சிந்தித்தால், அவர் நிகழ்காலத்தில், நிகழ் நொடியில் வாழ்ந்தவர் என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். இன்று இப்போது என்று வாழ்ந்து
காட்டிய இயேசு,
இறுதியில் கல்வாரியில் சிலுவையில் தொங்கியபோதும் அதே எண்ணங்களை
வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.
இயேசுவுடன் சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டவர்
விண்ணரசில் நுழைய அனுமதி கேட்டபோது, அந்தக் கொடிய துன்பத்தின்
உச்சியில், இயேசு ஒரு விரக்தியுடன் “என்ன பெரிய அரசு...
அந்த அரசுக்கு வந்த கதியைத்தான் பார்க்கிறீரே. ஒரு வேளை நாளை அந்த அரசு வரலாம். அப்போது
நான் அந்த அரசில் ஒரு வேளை நுழைந்தால், நீரும் நாளை என்னோடு
வரலாம்” என்று நம்பிக்கை இழந்து சொல்லியிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அதற்கு மாறாக,
இயேசு கூறிய நம்பிக்கையூட்டும் சொற்கள் இவை: "நீர்
இன்று என்னோடு பேரின்ப வீட்டில் இருப்பீர் என உறுதியாக உமக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்."
(லூக்கா 23:43) இயேசு இன்றையப் பொழுதில், இப்போதைய
நொடியில் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு வாழ்ந்தார் என்பதற்கு இதைவிட சக்திவாய்ந்த சாட்சி இருக்க
முடியாது. ‘நிகழ் பொழுதின் அருள்’ என்று பொருள்படும் The Grace
of the Present Moment என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொற்றொடரின் முழு விளக்கமாக
இயேசு வாழ்ந்தார்.
நிகழ் பொழுதின் அருளில் நாம் வாழ்கிறோமா
என்பதைச் சிந்திப்பது நல்லது. நமது தினசரி நிகழ்வுகளைக் கொஞ்சம் அலசுவோம்.
காலையில் நாம் எழுந்ததும், முகத்தில் தெளிக்கும் அந்த நீரினால் அங்குள்ள உயிரணுக்களெல்லாம்
கண்விழித்து, குளித்து, சிலிர்த்து முகமெல்லாம் இரத்த ஓட்டம்
பரவுகிறதே... இதை நம்மில் எத்தனை பேர் உணர்கிறோம்? காலையில்
ஆரம்பித்து, நாம் அனுபவித்து இரசிக்கக்கூடிய ஆயிரமாயிரம் சின்னச் சின்னச் செயல்கள்
ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நடக்கின்றன. நம்மில் எத்தனை பேர் இந்தச் செயல்களையெல்லாம் முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன்
இரசித்துச் செய்கிறோம்?
முக்கியமாக, சாப்பிடும்போது, வேறு சிந்தனைகளில் மூழ்கிப்போய் என்ன சாப்பிடுகிறோம் என்பதையும் மறந்து ஏதோ ஒரு
கடமையைச் செய்வதைப்போல் சாப்பிடுவது மருத்துவ கண்ணோட்டத்தின்படி நம் உடலுக்கு நல்லதல்ல
என்பதை நாம் அறிந்தவர்கள்தானே... இருந்தாலும், சாப்பிடும் நேரங்களில்
பல சிந்தனைகளுடன் சாப்பிட்டு, அதன் பின்விளைவாக, மருத்துவரை எத்தனை முறை நாம் நாடியிருக்கிறோம்? நாம் செய்யும்
ஒவ்வொரு செயலையும், வாழும் ஒவ்வொரு நொடியையும் ஈடுபாட்டுடன்
வாழ்ந்தால், மருந்துக்கும் மருத்துவர் பக்கம் போகத் தேவையில்லையே. நிகழ்
பொழுதின் அருளில் வாழ்வது மனதுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, உடலுக்கும் அதிகப்
பயன் தரும்.
நாசரேத்தின் தொழுகைக் கூடத்தில்
இயேசு வாசித்த ஏசாயாவின் சொற்கள் பல சமுதாயச் சிந்தனைகளை எழுப்பக்கூடியது.
அவைகளைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்காமல், இன்று, இப்போது என்று நான் பேசியது இன்றைய நற்செய்திக்குத் தகுந்த விளக்கம்
இல்லை என்று உங்களில் ஒரு சிலர் நினைக்கலாம்.
உடலளிவிலும், மனதளவிலும் கட்டுண்டு கிடந்த மனித சமுதாயத்தை விடுவிக்கவே தான் வந்ததாக இயேசு
கூறிய இந்த வார்த்தைகளுக்கு விளக்கங்கள் தேவையில்லையே! சமுதாய நீதி பற்றிய கனவுகள் என்றோ எப்போதோ நனவாகும் என்று
எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்த, வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த யூத
மக்களுக்கு இன்றே,
இப்போதே என்று இயேசு கொடுத்த பாடங்கள் நம்பிக்கையை
வளர்த்த முதல் பாடங்கள். சமுதாய மாற்றங்கள் இனிவரும் என்றல்ல, இப்போதே வந்துவிட்டது என்று அவர்களை நம்பவைக்க இயேசு முயன்றது, அவரது முதல்
வெற்றி என நான் நினைக்கிறேன்.
இன்று, இப்போது என்று வாழ்வில் நாம் முழுமையாக ஈடுபட்டால்... அவ்வண்ணமே நம்மைச்
சுற்றியுள்ள ஒவ்வொருவரும் ஈடுபட்டால், சமுதாயத்தில்
குறைகள் அதிகம் தோன்றாது. அப்படியே தோன்றும் குறைகளைக் களைய அன்றே, அப்போதே செயல் படுவோம். தீர்வுகளை அன்றே காண்போம். குறையற்ற சமுதாயம் உறுதியாக
உருவாகும். ‘உருவாகும்’ என்பது எதிர்காலம். சீரியதொரு
சமுதாயம் உருவாகிறது; உருவாகிவிட்டது; நல்லவைகள் நடக்கின்றன என்று நம்புகின்றோம்.
