Recently, the Hollywood movie ‘Man of Steel’ was released in many countries. This is, probably, the 10th attempt to bring ‘Superman’ to the screens, starting from 1951. The background information on how this comic character was created gives us a link to our Gospel today (Luke 9: 18-24). 80 years back, in 1933, two high school students - Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster – created the ‘Superman’ character. The first version of this character was portrayed ‘as a bald telepathic villain bent on world domination’. This attempt did not receive warm welcome. Hence, they changed the ‘Superman’ as a hero using his extraordinary powers to save the world. This ‘Superman’ became an instantaneous success. The rest is history.

We do have quite a few characters – Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Wonder Woman, Power Girl – who have special powers, which others don’t possess. Most of these characters are born like other human beings, but achieve this special stature by realising their potentials step by step. This journey of discovering their extraordinary self, begins with the basic question: ‘Who am I?’.

‘Who am I?’ sounds like a philosophical question. Behind this question lurks diffidence, at times and desire, at other times. Diffidence of not being sure who we really are and, more especially, who we seem to be to others. ‘Know thyself’ was proposed, by Socrates, as the crowning wisdom a human being could achieve. Desire for self-knowledge has made sages spend their entire life on the question: Who am I? The end of such a life-time search was Enlightenment! While sages went to mountain tops to face the question of ‘Who am I?’, most of us face this question in our daily lives, within our families and work situations. This ‘Who am I?’ question is closely linked to ‘Who am I to others – my family, my friends, my colleagues…?’ In other words this question is similar to what we hear from the Gospel today… ‘Who do people say that I am?’ (Luke 9: 18-24)

I have heard that in government circles an exercise is taken up every day. What appears on the TV as evening news and what appear in the morning papers are collected, categorised, prioritized and given to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. A special officer is appointed to do this. This is only a hearsay information and you are welcome to take it with more than a pinch of salt. But, I guess such an exercise is in place in any organisation. We are aware of service agencies which provide ‘special information’ to the higher-ups!

This exercise is undertaken to feel the pulse of the people. More often, this exercise is undertaken with some trepidation. I guess the first question that confronts most of the political leaders in the morning will be: what do the people think of me and my government? In other words, who do people say that I am?

Why did Jesus ask these questions? Was he worried about his popularity? Nope! There were other reasons. This is how I interpret this Gospel event. Jesus was interested in helping his disciples share some of the popular trust people had in Him. He also wanted to prepare them for the passion message he was going to share with them. Jesus was probably giving his disciples the bitter pill (predicting his passion) coated with sugar (a profession of faith, a faith shared by common people)!

These questions of Jesus are not addressed to His disciples alone. Down the centuries they have been addressed to all of us. They have perennial value, in season and out of season.

On quite many occasions, surveys have been undertaken to discover who has influenced the history of humankind. Almost in all of them, Jesus Christ has figured either in the first place or within the first three positions. Such has been his influence.

Who do people say that Jesus is?

People have said and, still, are saying so many things… good and bad, true and false, profession of faith and downright blasphemy! Ocean of opinions… Jesus is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. I am reminded of the famous passage “One Solitary Life”

One Solitary Life

He was born in an obscure village, a child of a peasant woman.

He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty,

Then became an itinerant preacher.

He never wrote a book.

He never held an office.

He never did one thing that usually accompanies greatness.

He had no credentials but Himself.

While still a young man, public opinion turned against Him.

His friends ran away.

One denied Him.

He went through the mockery of a trial.

He was nailed to a cross between two thieves.

His executioners gambled for His only piece of property - His coat.

He was laid in a borrowed grave.

Nineteen wide centuries have come and gone.

Today He is the centerpiece of the human race.

All the armies that ever marched,

All the navies that ever sailed,

All the parliaments that ever sat,

And all the kings that ever reigned put together,

have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as that

One Solitary Life.

Who do you say that I am?

Hey, wake up… this question is personally addressed to you and me. Who do I say that Jesus is? All the answers I have been memorising since childhood may not be helpful. Neither is Jesus interested in my memorised answers. I am now asked to face this question seriously, personally.

More than a question, it is an invitation – an invitation to be convinced of the person of Jesus so that I can follow Him more closely. Most of us become speechless and, perhaps, embarrassed by such a direct question… such a confrontation… rather, ‘care-frontation’!

Here is a story of a world famous trapeze artist who was performing death defying stunts over a canyon exceedingly deep. In one such stunt, he was taking a wheelbarrow filled with rocks over the rope. He was blindfolded too! When he had completed this particular stunt, one of his ardent fans rushed to him, grabbed his hands and told him that he was surely the best in the world. The artist felt happy about these compliments. Then he asked his fan whether he believed in his capacity to do all these dare-devil stunts. “I believe you are the best, ever!” was his firm, affirmative answer. Then the trapeze artist told him, “Okay then, now I would like to perform the final adventure. I shall take this wheelbarrow once again over the rope. This time you sit in it.” (Story taken from “At Home With God” by Hedwig Lewis, S.J.) I presume that that ardent fan must have disappeared into thin air, when he was given this ‘invitation’!

It is so easy to answer the ‘theoretical’ question: “Who do people say that I am?” But when Jesus turns around and says, “Who do YOU say that I am?” I feel like running away from this ‘care-frontation’. Am I ready to sit in the wheelbarrow and be transported by Jesus over the canyon… the canyon between reason and faith? Hm… yes, perhaps… well, you see… it’s actually like this… No clear answer seems to be forthcoming. Well, dear friends, there is no easy answer to this question. I wish there is an easy answer! “Who do you say that I am?” is a crucial question we can try and answer during this Year of Faith!

'எஃகு மனிதர்' (Man of Steel) என்ற ஹாலிவுட் திரைப்படம், ஜூன் 14ம் தேதி உலகின் பல நாடுகளில் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. நம்மில் பலருக்குத் தெரிந்த 'சுப்பர்மேன்' என்ற 'காமிக்' படத்தொடர் நாயகனை மையப்படுத்திய கதை இது. 1933ம் ஆண்டு, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster என்ற இரு பள்ளி மாணவர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட காமிக் கதை நாயகன்... ‘சூப்பர்மேன்’. Krypton என்ற மற்றொரு கோளத்தில் பிறந்து, ஒரு குழந்தையாக மண்ணை வந்தடையும் ‘சூப்பர்மேன்’, ஏனைய மனிதர்களைவிட வேறுபட்ட, உயர்ந்த பல சக்திகள் கொண்டவர். ‘சூப்பர்மேன்’ கதையிலும், இன்னும் சக்திகள் பெற்ற ஏனைய நாயகர்களின் கதைகளிலும் பொதிந்துள்ள அடிப்படை தத்துவம் என்ன? ஒருவர் தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவைப் பெற்றால், அவரது சக்திகளை ஆக்கப்பூர்வமாகப் பயன்படுத்தமுடியும் என்பதுதான் அந்தத் தத்துவம். தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவு பெற 'நான் யார்?' என்ற தேடலில், 'சூப்பர்மேன்' இறங்குகிறார். உலகில் பிறந்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் ஏதோ ஒரு நேரம், அல்லது பல நேரங்களில் சந்திக்க வேண்டிய, சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு கேள்வி: 'நான் யார்?'

"நான் யார்?" என்றத் தேடலின் விடையாக, "உன்னையே நீ அறிவாய்" “Know thyself” என்று கிரேக்கப் பேரறிஞர் சாக்ரடீஸ் கூறிச்சென்றார். தன்னை அறிதலே அனைத்து அறிவுகளிலும் தலைசிறந்தது; ஏனைய அறிவுகள் அனைத்தும் இதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக உருவாகின்றன என்பது சாக்ரடீஸ் கூறிய பெரும் உண்மை. 'நான் யார்?' என்ற இத்தேடல், மலையுச்சிகளில், காடுகளில் ஆழ்நிலை தியானத்தில் மிகச் சிலர் மேற்கொள்ளும் முயற்சி. ஆனால், நம்மில் பலர் இக்கேள்வியை நம் சாதாரண வாழ்வில், நம் குடும்பங்களில், பணியிடங்களில் பலமுறை சந்திக்கிறோம். 'நான் யார்?' என்ற கேள்வியின் பின்புலத்தில் புதைந்திருக்கும் வேறு கேள்விகளும் உண்டு. நான் யாரென்று பிறர் கூறுகின்றனர்? ... மக்கள் மத்தியில் நான் யார்?, என் உறவுகள், நண்பர்கள் மத்தியில் நான் யார்? என்பன அக்கேள்விகள்.

இயேசுவுக்கும் இத்தகையக் கேள்விகள் எழுந்தன. இயேசுவின் இந்தத் தேடலை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்குக் கூறுகிறது.

லூக்கா 9: 18-24

இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுடன் தனித்திருந்த வேளையில், "நான் யார் என்று மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?", "நான் யார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?" என்ற இரு கேள்விகளை கேட்டார் என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. இச்சூழல் நம்மை ஒரு கற்பனை காட்சிக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது.

தலைவர் ஒருவர் நண்பர்களோடு நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். திடீரென, தலைவர், நண்பர்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பி, "மக்கள் என்னப்பத்தி என்ன சொல்றாங்க?" என்று கேட்கிறார். நண்பர்கள் சில நிமிடங்கள் திகைத்து நிற்கின்றனர். அவர்கள் மனதில் ஓடும் எண்ணங்கள் பலவாறாக இருக்கும். அந்தத் தலைவர் மக்களுக்கு நல்லது செய்யும் தலைவராக இருந்தால், துவக்கத்தில் ஏற்படும் தயக்கத்திற்குப் பிறகு, பல உண்மையான பதில்கள் வெளிவரும். ஆனால் அந்தத் தலைவர் ஒரு தாதாவாகவோ அல்லது ஒரு அரசியல்வாதியாகவோ இருந்தால்... இக்கேள்விக்கு உண்மையான பதில் சொல்ல முடியாமல், அவருடைய நண்பர்கள் தடுமாறிப் போவார்கள்.

மக்கள் தங்களைப்பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறார்கள் என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ள அரசியல் தலைவர்கள் மேற்கொள்ளும் முயற்சிகள் அதிகம். உண்மைக்குச் செவிக்கொடுத்து, மனசாட்சியின்படி நடந்துகொள்பவர்களாக அவர்கள் இருந்தால், மக்களின் கருத்துக்கள் அவர்களை மாற்றவேண்டும். ஆனால், இத்தலைவர்களைச் சுற்றியுள்ள 'ஜால்ராக்கள்' அவர்களிடம் உண்மையைச் சொல்வார்களா, அப்படியேச் சொன்னாலும், அதை அத்தலைவர்கள் ஏற்றுகொள்வார்களா என்பதெல்லாம், பெரும் கேள்விக்குறியே!

நம் கற்பனையைத் தொடர்வோம். இன்னும் சிறிது தூரம் சென்றதும், தலைவர் மீண்டும் திரும்பி, "மக்கள் சொல்றது இருக்கட்டும். நீங்க என்னைப்பத்தி என்ன சொல்றீங்க?" என்று கேட்டால், நண்பர்கள் திகைப்பில் உறைந்து நின்றுவிடுவர். உடன் பதில்கள் வராது... ஏனெனில், இக்கேள்விக்கு ஆழ்மனதிலிருந்து பதில் வரவேண்டும். அந்நேரத்தில் யாராவது ஒருவர், உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் இருந்து பிறக்கும் உண்மையான பதிலைச் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தால், மற்றவர்களும் தங்கள் மனதில்பட்டதைச் சொல்ல, அங்கு ஒரு நல்ல கருத்து பரிமாற்றம் நடைபெறும்.

இந்தப் பரிமாற்றம் உண்மைப் பரிமாற்றமாக இருக்க, தலைவர் உண்மைத் தலைவராக இருக்கவேண்டும். தலைவர், தவறான வழி செல்பவராக இருந்தால், இந்தப் பரிமாற்றத்தில் வெளியாவதேல்லாம் தலைவருக்குச் சாமரம் வீசும்  வார்த்தைகளாகவே இருக்கும். இது, தலைவருக்கும் தெரியும், சுற்றியுள்ள 'ஜால்ராக்களு'க்கும் தெரியும்.

நமது நற்செய்திக்கு வருவோம். இயேசு இந்த நற்செய்தியில் கேட்கும் இரு முக்கியமான கேள்விகள்: மக்கள் என்னைப் பற்றி என்ன சொல்கிறார்கள்? நீங்கள் என்னைப் பற்றி என்ன சொல்கிறீர்கள்?

மக்கள் இயேசுவைப் பற்றி என்ன சொல்கிறார்கள்?

என்னென்னவோ சொல்லி விட்டார்கள்... நல்லதும், பொல்லாததும்... உண்மையும், பொய்யும்... விசுவாசச் சத்தியங்களும், கற்பனைக் கதைகளும்... அளவுகளின்றி சொல்லி விட்டார்கள். இவ்வளவு சொன்னாலும், இன்னும் சொல்லிக்கொண்டே போகலாம் இயேசுவைப்பற்றி. இயேசு இவர்தான், இப்படிப்பட்டவர்தான் என்று சொல்வது மிகக் கடினம்.

உலகின் செம்மறி அவர்... செம்மறிகளை வழிநடத்தும் ஆயன் அவர்...

குற்றப்பழி சுமந்த குற்றவாளி... குற்றங்களைச் சீர்தூக்கி, நீதி வழங்கும் நீதிபதி...

தாகம் தீர்க்கும் வாழ்வு நீர்... தன் தாகத்தைத் தீர்த்துக் கொள்ள முடியாமல் சிலுவையில் தவித்தவர்...

மக்களின் பசிபோக்கும் வானக உணவு... தன் பசிபோக்க புதுமை செய்ய  மறுத்தவர்...

மனித குலத்தை மீட்பவர்... தன்னையே மீட்க முடியாமல் சிலுவையில் இறந்தவர்...

இத்தகையக் கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் பார்க்கும்போது, இயேசுவை ஓர் இலக்கணத்தில் அடக்க முயல்வது வீண் முயற்சி என்பது நமக்குத் தெளிவாகிறது.

"நான் யார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?"

அன்று இயேசு தன் சீடர்களிடம் தொடுத்த இந்தக் கேள்வியை, இன்று நம்மிடமும் தொடுக்கிறார். சிறு வயது முதல் அம்மா, அப்பா, குருக்கள், அருள்சகோதரிகள், ஆசிரியர்கள் அனைவரிடமும், புத்தகங்கள் வழியாகவும் நான் பயின்றவைகளைப் பட்டியலிட்டு,  "நான் யார் என்று மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?" என்ற இயேசுவின் முதல் கேள்விக்குப் பதில் ஒப்பித்துவிடலாம். ஆனால், இந்த இரண்டாவது கேள்விக்கு அப்படி எளிதாகப் பதில் சொல்லிவிட முடியாது. அறிவுப்பூர்வமான, மனப்பாடங்கள் இந்தக் கேள்விக்கு பதிலாக முடியாது. நாம் அனுபவித்து உணர்ந்த நம்பிக்கையே இந்தக் கேள்விக்குரிய பதிலைத் தர முடியும்.

முதல் கேள்விக்கு நாம் அளிக்கும் விடைகள் நம் அறிவை வளர்க்கும். நமது விவாதங்களுக்கு உதவும். இரண்டாவது கேள்விக்கு நாம் தரும் பதில் நமது வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றும். இந்தச் சவாலைத்தான் இயேசு இன்று நற்செய்தி  வழியாக நமக்குத் தருகிறார். "நான் யார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?" என்று இயேசு எழுப்பிய நேரடியான கேள்விக்கு, பேதுரு அன்று சொன்னது ஆழமான பதில். ஆனால் பேதுரு வெளியிட்ட விசுவாச அறிக்கைக்குப் பின், அங்கு நடந்தது வியப்பைத் தருகிறது. "இதை யாரிடமும் சொல்ல வேண்டாம் என்று அவர்களிடம் இயேசு கண்டிப்பாய்க் கூறினார்" என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் வாசிக்கிறோம். பேதுருவிடம் மட்டுமல்ல, அங்கிருந்த அனைவரிடமும் இந்த எச்சரிக்கையைத் தரும் இயேசு, தொடர்ந்து தன் பாடுகளைப் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறார். அதுமட்டுமல்ல, அந்தப் பாடுகளில் பங்கேற்க, தன் சீடர்களையும் அழைக்கிறார்.

இயேசு கூறியதை நாம் இவ்வாறு எண்ணிப் பார்க்கலாம்: "என்னைப்பற்றி ஓரளவு புரிந்துகொள்ள ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறீர்கள். நல்லது. இன்னும் என்னை புரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும் என்றால், என்னைப்போல நீங்களும் துன்பப்பட வேண்டும். என்னையும் என் வார்த்தைகளையும் சரியாக புரிந்துகொண்டால், என் செயல்பாடுகளிலும், என் சிலுவையிலும் உங்களுக்குப் பங்கு உண்டு" என்ற உண்மையை இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுக்கு உணர்த்துகிறார்.

கடவுளைப் பற்றி வெறும் புத்தக அறிவு போதாது. அப்படி நாம் தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் கடவுளைக் கோவிலில் வைத்துப் பூட்டிவிடுவோம். விவிலியத்தில் வைத்து மூடிவிடுவோம். அனால், இறைவனை, இயேசுவை அனுபவத்தில் சந்தித்தால், வாழ்க்கையில் பல மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படும். பல சவால்களைச் சந்திக்க வேண்டும்.

நம் மனதைக் கவர்ந்த ஒருவரை, கருத்தளவில் புரிந்துகொள்வதோ, அவரைப் புகழ்வதோ எளிது. அவரைப் போல வாழ்வதோ, நம்பிக்கையோடு அவரைத் தொடர்வதோ எளிதல்ல.

எனக்கு ஒரு கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.

கயிற்றின் மேல் சாகசங்கள் செய்யும் கழைக்கூத்தாடிகளைப் பார்த்திருப்போம். இவர்களில் ஒரு சிலர் நடந்து மட்டும் சாகசங்கள் செய்வதில்லை. கயிற்றின் மேல் படுத்தல், சாப்பிடுதல், சைக்கிள் சவாரி செய்தல்... இப்படி அவர்களது சாகசங்கள் பல விதம்...

உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற ஒரு கழைக்கூத்தாடி பெருநகர் ஒன்றில், இரு அடுக்கு மாடி கட்டிடங்களுக்கிடையே கயிறு கட்டி சாகசங்கள் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரது சாகசங்களில் ஒன்று நூறு செங்கல்கள் அடுக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு கை வண்டியைத் தள்ளிக்கொண்டு அந்தக் கயிற்றில் நடப்பது.

அதையும் அற்புதமாக அவர் முடித்தபோது, இரசிகர் ஒருவர் ஓடிவந்து அவரது கைகளை இறுகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டு, "அற்புதம், அபாரம். நீங்கள் உலகிலேயே மிகச் சிறந்த கலைஞர்." என்று அடுக்கிக்கொண்டே போனார். "என் திறமையில் உங்களுக்கு அவ்வளவு நம்பிக்கை உள்ளதா?" என்று கழைக்கூத்தாடி கேட்டார்.

"என்ன, அப்படி சொல்லிவிட்டீர்கள்... உங்கள் சாகசங்களைப் பற்றி மற்றவர்கள் என்னிடம் சொன்னபோது, நான் அவைகளை நம்பவில்லை. இப்போது நானே நேரில் அவைகளைக் கண்டுவிட்டேன். இனி உங்களைப்பற்றி மற்றவர்களிடம் சொல்வதுதான் என் முக்கிய வேலை." என்று ஆர்வமாய்ச் சொன்னார்.

"மற்றவர்களிடம் என்னைப்பற்றிச் சொல்வது இருக்கட்டும். இப்போது ஓர் உதவி." என்று கேட்டார் கழைக்கூத்தாடி.

"உம்.. சொல்லுங்கள்." என்று இரசிகர் ஆர்வமாய் பதில் சொன்னார்.

"நான் மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை அந்தக் கயிற்றில் தள்ளு வண்டியோடு நடக்கப் போகிறேன். இந்த முறை, அந்த செங்கல்களுக்குப் பதில், நீங்கள் அந்த வண்டியில் அமர்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்... பத்திரமாக உங்களைக் கொண்டு செல்கிறேன். பார்க்கும் மக்கள் இதை இன்னும் அதிகம் இரசிப்பார்கள். வாருங்கள்..." என்று அழைத்தார்.

அந்தக் கழைக் கூத்தாடியின் அருமை பெருமைகளை உலகறியச் செய்வதற்கு ஆர்வமாய் இருந்த அந்த இரசிகர், இருந்த இடம் தெரியாமல் காற்றோடு கரைந்தார்.

விவிலியத்திலும், கோவிலிலும் இயேசுவைச் சந்தித்து, அவரது அருமை பெருமைகளைப் பேசுவதோடு, இயேசுவுடன் நாம் கொள்ளும் தொடர்பு நின்றுவிடுமா? அல்லது, அவர் தரும் அழைப்பை ஏற்று, அவரை நம்பிக்கையோடு தொடர்ந்து, அவர் பணியிலும், பாடுகளிலும் பங்கேற்க நாம் தயாராக இருக்கிறோமா?

"நான் யார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?" என்று இயேசு நம் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் நோக்கிச் சொல்வது, வெறும் கேள்வி அல்ல, ஓர் அழைப்பு. அவரை நம்பி அவரோடு நடக்க, அவரைப்போல் நடக்க, இரவானாலும், புயலானாலும் துணிந்து நடக்க அவர் தரும் ஓர் அழைப்பு. இயேசுவின் இந்த அழைப்புக்கு, மனதின் ஆழத்திலிருந்து வரட்டும் நம் பதில்கள்.
