Two sets of ideas which seem poles apart are juxtaposed this Sunday. Yes… Today’s Liturgy presents to us readings that talk of self-respect and respect for others. This Sunday also calls our attention to those who have been stripped of self respect. Yes… January 19, this Sunday, is also the World Day of Migrants and Refugees observed (mind you… I am not using the word ‘celebrated’) by the Catholic Church. In 1914, when the world was shocked by the news of World War I, St Pius X, the then Holy Father, instituted this World Day. This year marks the Centenary Year of this World Day. While the liturgical readings talk of self respect, this Sunday also talks of those who are denied self respect in many ways.

Self respect is a seed planted in every human being at birth. This seed can either grow well and bear fruit or wither away depending on how the family nurtures this seed. A well-knit family is a like a field that is fenced around so that the plants can grow without danger from outside predators. When such protection is lacking in the family, the plants, naturally, become a prey to outside forces. The plants get devoured by unwanted social, psychological and spiritual predators.

The seed of self respect planted in each of us needs careful nurturing. Proper growth in self respect calls for proper self-knowledge. Respect for one’s self breeds respect for others. All these thoughts are reflected in the three readings of this Sunday:

Prophet Isaiah says: “I am honoured in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength.” (Is. 49: 5). St Paul says that we are ‘sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people’. (I Cor. 1: 2). The Gospel of John brings to focus two great persons who admired and respected one another – John the Baptist and Jesus.

A few years back, I received a lovely Powerpoint Presentation sent via email by one of my Jesuit friends. ‘VALUE WHAT YOU HAVE’ was the title. Here is the text of that presentation:

The owner of a small business, a friend of the poet Olavo Bilac, met him on the street and asked him, “Mr Bilac, I need to sell my small farm, the one you know so well. Could you please write an announcement for me for the paper?”

Bilac wrote: “For sale: A beautiful property, where birds sing at dawn in extensive woodland, bisected by the brilliant and sparkling waters of a large stream. The house is bathed by the rising sun. If offers tranquil shade in the evenings on the veranda.”

Some time later, the poet met his friend and asked whether he had sold the property, to which he replied: “I’ve changed my mind when I read what you had written. I realised the treasure that was mine.”

Sometimes we underestimate the good things we have, chasing after the mirages of false treasures. We often see people letting go of their children, their families, their spouses, their friends, their profession, their knowledge accumulated over many years, their good health, the good things of life. They throw out what God has given them so freely, things which were nourished with so much care and effort.

Look around and appreciate what you have: your home, your loved ones, friends on whom you can really count, the knowledge you have gained, your good heath… and all the beautiful things of life that are truly your most precious treasure…

The theme of ‘valuing what we have – especially all the hidden treasures in our lives’ reminds me of another familiar story. In a small village lived a beggar who sat at a particular place day after day to ask for alms. He would not move to any other place. It looked as if he owned that piece of land as his own. After a few years, the beggar died on the very spot where he was begging. The people of the village decided to bury him at the same spot. When they began to dig for his burial, they found a treasure trove buried under the very same spot where the beggar sat all those years, begging.

Of all the treasures we can possess, the most precious treasure is ourselves. This treasure may or may not be approved and appreciated by the world. But, what is most important is that we are honoured in the eyes of the Lord. This is the core of the first reading today (Isaiah 49: 5). A person who respects him/herself is capable of respecting others. This is illustrated in the Gospel. St John the Baptist was already a popular preacher. If he had chosen to remain popular, he could have done so, ignoring Jesus walking towards him. But, the moment John saw Jesus, he knew that the one superior to him had arrived and he did not hesitate to acknowledge it (John 1: 29-34). Jesus on his part, showered on John one of the best compliments ever given to a human being – Matthew 11:11. Acknowledging another as superior to oneself should spring from one’s own self appreciation. Otherwise, it would be false humility and would sound faked and hollow. John and Jesus were self-assured, self-respecting persons and hence they were able to appreciate the other.

This Sunday also calls our attention to persons who are deprived of self-respect in a big way, namely, those who are forced to leave their countries for various reasons. When World War I broke out in 1914, Pope Pius X created the World Day of Migrants and Refugees so that broken families, displaced people will be supported by the prayers of the Catholic Church. This year marks the Centenary Year of this World Day. For this occasion, Pope Francis has given a message. 

I wish to bring to your attention some key sentences from this message, titled - Migrants and Refugees: Towards a Better World:

A better world will come about only if attention is first paid to individuals; if human promotion is integral, taking account of every dimension of the person, including the spiritual; if no one is neglected, including the poor, the sick, prisoners, the needy and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:31-46); if we can prove capable of leaving behind a throwaway culture and embracing one of encounter and acceptance.

Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity. They are children, women and men who leave or who are forced to leave their homes for various reasons, who share a legitimate desire for knowing and having, but above all for being more…As the Church accompanies migrants and refugees on their journey, she seeks to understand the causes of migration, but she also works to overcome its negative effects, and to maximize its positive influence on the communities of origin, transit and destination.

Finally, in considering the situation of migrants and refugees, I would point to yet another element in building a better world, namely, the elimination of prejudices and presuppositions in the approach to migration. Not infrequently, the arrival of migrants, displaced persons, asylum-seekers and refugees gives rise to suspicion and hostility. There is a fear that society will become less secure, that identity and culture will be lost, that competition for jobs will become stiffer and even that criminal activity will increase. The communications media have a role of great responsibility in this regard: it is up to them, in fact, to break down stereotypes and to offer correct information in reporting the errors of a few as well as the honesty, rectitude and goodness of the majority.

A change of attitude towards migrants and refugees is needed on the part of everyone, moving away from attitudes of defensiveness and fear, indifference and marginalization – all typical of a throwaway culture – towards attitudes based on a culture of encounter, the only culture capable of building a better, more just and fraternal world. The communications media are themselves called to embrace this “conversion of attitudes” and to promote this change in the way migrants and refugees are treated.

அண்மையில், பொங்கல் பெருநாளைக் கொண்டாடினோம். இவ்விழா பல்வேறு காரணங்களுக்காகக் கொண்டாடப்பட்டாலும், இவ்விழாவின் முக்கியக் காரணம் அறுவடை. சில நூறு மணிகளாக நாம் நிலத்தில் விதைத்தவற்றை, பல்லாயிரம் மணிகளாக அறுவடை செய்வதைக் கொண்டாடும் நாள் பொங்கல் பெருநாள். தரையில் விழுந்த விதை தானாகவே வளர்கிறது என்பது உண்மைதான். ஆனால், நல்ல நிலத்தில் விதைக்கப்பட்டு, நீர் ஊற்றப்பட்டு கரிசனையுடன், கவனிப்புடன் வளர்க்கப்படும் விதைகள் பல நூறு மடங்கு பயன்தரும் என்பது அதைவிட முக்கியமான உண்மை.

அழகிய அறுவடைத் திருநாளையொட்டி வரும் இஞ்ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு, இரு வேறு துருவங்களாய் தெரியும் சிந்தனைகளை நம்முன் வைக்கிறது. நல்ல நிலங்களில் வளரும் பயிர்களைப் போல, பாதுகாப்பானச் சூழல்களில் வளர்ந்து, நம்மை நாமே அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்வதால், நாம் எவ்விதம் நமக்கும் பிறருக்கும் பயன்தரும் கருவிகளாக மாறமுடியும் என்ற அழகான எண்ணங்களை இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள் நம் உள்ளத்தில் விதைக்கின்றன. இது ஒரு துருவம்.

இதற்கு நேர்மாறான துருவமாக, விதைக்கப்படவும், வேரூன்றவும் நிலமின்றி, பதர்களைப் போல, சருகுகளைப் போல அலைந்து திரியும் மக்களை எண்ணிப்பார்க்கவும் இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு நமக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. சனவரி 19, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, குடியேற்றதாரர், புலம்பெயர்ந்தோர் உலக நாள் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகிறது. 1914ம் ஆண்டு திருத்தந்தை புனித பத்தாம் பயஸ் அவர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இந்த உலக நாள், கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையில் இவ்வாண்டு, 100வது முறையாக கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகிறது என்பது தனிச்சிறப்பு. தாய்நாட்டில் தங்கள் சுய அடையாளங்களை இழந்து, தஞ்சம்புகும் அடுத்த நாடுகளிலும் அன்னியர்களாக, தவறான அடையாளங்களுடன் வாழவேண்டிய கொடுமைக்கு உள்ளாகும் மக்களை எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பது நமக்கு முன் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சவாலான மற்றொரு துருவம். இவ்விரு துருவங்களையும் இணைத்துச் சிந்திக்க, இறைவன் இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு வழியாக நம்மை அழைக்கிறார்.

நமக்கே உரித்தான அடையாளங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்வதைப்பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், நண்பர் ஒருவர் மின்னஞ்சலில் அனுப்பியிருந்த ஓர் அற்புதமான கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. Value What You Have - அதாவது, உன்னிடம் உள்ளதை மதித்து வாழ்வாயாக என்ற தலைப்புடன் என்னை வந்தடைந்த சிறுகதையை உங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துகொள்கிறேன்.

Olavo Bilac என்பவர் பிரேசில் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு கவிஞர், பத்திரிக்கையாளர். ஒரு நாள் அவரது நண்பர் அவரைத் தேடிவந்தார். தன்னுடைய சிறு பண்ணை வீட்டை தான் விற்க விரும்புவதாகக் கூறிய நண்பர், அதை விற்பதற்கு நல்லதொரு விளம்பரத்தை எழுதித் தரும்படி Bilacஇடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். Bilac பின்வரும் விளம்பர வரிகளை எழுதினார்:

"ஓர் அழகிய பண்ணை வீடு விற்பனைக்கு வருகிறது. இங்கு பறவைகளின் கானம் அதிகாலை முதல் ஒலிக்கும். பண்ணையின் நடுவில் அழகிய, தெளிந்ததொரு நீரோடை செல்கிறது. காலை இளஞ்சூரியனின் ஒளியில் வீட்டின் முகப்பு தினமும் குளிக்கும். மாலையில் பண்ணையில் பரவும் நிழலும், அமைதியும் நிம்மதி தரும்." என்ற இவ்வரிகளை எழுதி நண்பரிடம் கொடுத்தார் Bilac.

ஒரு சில வாரங்கள் சென்று தன் நண்பரைச் சந்தித்த Bilac, "என்ன? அந்த பண்ணை வீட்டை விற்றுவிட்டாயா?" என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு நண்பர், "இல்லை நண்பா! நீ அந்தப் பண்ணை வீட்டைப்பற்றி எழுதிய விளம்பரத்தை வாசித்தபின், என் பண்ணை வீடு எவ்வளவு அழகானதென்று அறிந்து கொண்டேன். அதை நான் விற்கப் போவதில்லை." என்று புன்னகையுடன் பதில் சொன்னார்.

நம்மைப் பற்றி, நம்மிடம் உள்ளவற்றைப் பற்றி எவ்வளவு தூரம் நாம் அறிந்துள்ளோம்; நம்மை நாமே எவ்வளவு ஆழமாய் புரிந்து வைத்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதைப் பொறுத்து நமது நல் வாழ்வு, நமது நல வாழ்வு அமையும்.

நம்மிடம் உள்ள உண்மையான கருவூலங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளாமல், தூரத்துக் கானல்நீரை, துரத்துவதால் வாழ்வின் பெரும் பகுதியை, நாம் வீணாக்குகிறோம். நம் உண்மை அடையாளங்களை உலகிற்கு உணர்த்தாமல், அவரைப்போல், இவரைப்போல் என்று போலி முகமூடிகளை அணிந்து எமாற்றமடைகிறோம். பல நேரங்களில் இந்தப் பொய்யான, மாயைகளைப் பெறுவதற்கு, நம்மிடம் உண்மையாய் இருப்பவற்றை விலை பேசுகிறோம். நம் குடும்பம், தொழில், நண்பர்கள் என்று நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள நல்லவைகளை இழந்துவிட்டு, பின்னர் வருந்துகிறோம். நாம் நாமாகவே வாழ்வதற்கு, நம்மைப்பற்றிய தெளிவு முதலில் நமக்கு வேண்டும். இந்தத் தெளிவு நம்மைப்பற்றிய உண்மையான மதிப்பை நமக்குள் உருவாக்கும். வேறு யாரும் நம்மை மதிப்பதற்குமுன், நமது பார்வையில் நாம் மதிப்புப் பெறவேண்டும். நமது பார்வையில், இறைவன் பார்வையில் நாம் மதிப்பு பெற்றவர்கள் என்பதை இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயாவைப் போல் நாமும் நெஞ்சுயர்த்திச் சொல்லவேண்டும்.

இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா 49: 1,5

கருப்பையில் இருக்கும்போதே ஆண்டவர் என்னை அழைத்தார்: என் தாய் வயிற்றில் உருவாகும்போதே என் பெயர் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிட்டார். தம் கையின் நிழலால் என்னைப் பாதுகாத்தார்... ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் நான் மதிப்புப்பெற்றவன்; என் கடவுளே என் ஆற்றல்.

ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் பார்வையில் மதிப்புப் பெறும்போதுதான், அடுத்தவரையும் நம்மால் மதிக்கமுடியும். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இதற்கு நல்லதோர் எடுத்துக்காட்டு. தன்னைச் சுற்றிலும் எப்போதும் அலைமோதும் கூட்டத்தைக் கண்டு, யோவான் நிலைதடுமாறவில்லை. தன் உண்மையான நிலை, தன் மதிப்பு அனைத்தும் இறைவனின் வழியை ஏற்பாடு செய்வதில்தான் அடங்கியுள்ளது என்று தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவு யோவானுக்கு இருந்தது. தான் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த வழிக்குச் சொந்தக்காரர் வந்துவிட்டார் என்பதை உணர்ந்ததும், மக்களின் கவனத்தை இறைவன் பேரில் திருப்பினார். இதைத்தான் இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்குச் சொல்கிறது.

யோவான் நற்செய்தி 1: 29,34

இயேசு தம்மிடம் வருவதைக் கண்ட யோவான், “இதோ! கடவுளின் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி! ஆட்டுக்குட்டியாம் இவரே உலகின் பாவத்தைப் போக்குபவர். எனக்குப்பின் வரும் இவர் என்னைவிட முன்னிடம் பெற்றவர்... இவரே இறைமகன் எனச் சான்றும் கூறிவருகிறேன்.”

தன்னை விட வேறொருவர் அதிக மதிப்புடையவர் என்று சொல்வதற்கு, தன்னம்பிக்கையும், தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவும் தேவை. இத்தகையத் தெளிவும், நம்பிக்கையும் இல்லாமல் பிறரை உயர்த்திப் பேசும்போது, அதில் ஒரு போலியான தாழ்ச்சி தெரியும். தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவான எண்ணங்களும், தன்னைப்பற்றிய சரியான மதிப்பும் கொண்டிருந்தால் மட்டுமே அடுத்தவரை உயர்வாக எண்ணமுடியும், மதிக்கமுடியும்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் இயேசுவைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி, புகழுரைகள் சொன்னார். இயேசுவும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைக் குறித்து மிகச்சிறந்த புகழுரை வழங்கியுள்ளார் என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம். மனிதராய்ப் பிறந்தவர்களுள் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைவிடப் பெரியவர் எவரும் தோன்றியதில்லை. (மத்தேயு நற்செய்தி 11: 11) என்று இயேசு கூறினார். இயேசுவும் யோவானும் ஒருவரையொருவர் புகழ்ந்துகொண்டது, வெறும் முகத்துதி அல்ல. இருவரும் தங்களை உள்ளூர உயர்வாக மதித்தவர்கள், எனவே அவர்களால் அடுத்தவரின் உயர்வையும் மனதார உணரமுடிந்தது. வாயாரப் புகழமுடிந்தது.

இதுவரை நாம் சிந்தித்தது... இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு, நம் முன் வைத்துள்ள முதல் துருவம். இனி, இரண்டாவது துருவம்...

தங்கள் சுய மாண்பை இழந்து, அடுத்தவர்களால் இகழப்படும் நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ள குடியேற்றதாரரையும், புலம் பெயர்ந்தோரையும் எண்ணிப்பார்க்க தாய் திருஅவையும், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களும் நம்மை இந்த ஞாயிறு அழைக்கின்றனர். சனவரி 19, இந்த ஞாயிறன்று கடைபிடிக்கப்படும் குடியேற்றதாரர், புலம்பெயர்ந்தோர் 100வது உலக நாளையொட்டி, திருத்தந்தை அவர்கள் சிறப்புச் செய்தியொன்றை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார். "சீரியதோர் உலகை நோக்கி" என்ற தலைப்பில், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் வழங்கியுள்ள அச்செய்தியிலிருந்து ஒரு சில வரிகளை எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பது பயனளிக்கும்:

சீரியதோர் உலகை உருவாக்குதல் என்பது வெறும் கட்டுக்கதையோ, கனவோ அல்ல; மனிதரின் முழுமையான முன்னேற்றத்தில் அக்கறை கொண்ட நம்மால் சீரியதோர் உலகை உருவாக்க முடியும்.

பொருளாதார முன்னேற்றம் மட்டுமே சமுதாய முன்னேற்றம் என்று எண்ணும்போது, அச்சமுதாயத்தில், வறியோர், முதியோர், நோயுற்றோர், அன்னியர், சிறையிலிருப்போர் போன்றவர்கள் தேவையற்றவர்களாகிவிடுகின்றனர். தேவையற்றதைத் தூக்கியெறியும் கலாச்சாரம் வெகுவாக வளர்ந்துள்ள இன்றையச் சூழலில், பொருளாதார அடிப்படையில் 'தேவையற்றவர்' என்று முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்ட மனிதர்களையும் தூக்கி எறியும் ஆபத்து அதிகரித்துள்ளது. நாடுவிட்டு நாடு செல்லும் கட்டாயத்திற்கு உள்ளாக்கப்படும் அன்னியர்கள் 'தேவையற்றவர்' என்ற முத்திரை குத்தப்படுகின்றனர். சதுரங்க விளையாட்டில், காவல் வீரர்கள் எளிதில் பலியாவதுபோல, சமுதாயம் என்ற சதுரங்கத்தில், அன்னியர்கள் எளிதாகப் பலியாகின்றனர்.

சீரியதோர் உலகை உருவாக்குவதற்கு, உலகில் நிலவும் வறுமையைக் களைவது மிகவும் அவசியம். நாடுவிட்டு நாடு செல்வோர் இன்று பெருமளவில் கூடியிருப்பதற்கு, உலகின் பல நாடுகளிலும் தாண்டவமாடும் வறுமை ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம். நாடுகளிடையிலும், ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டுக்குள்ளும் வறுமையைக் களையும் முயற்சிகள் பெருகினால், மக்கள் தங்கள் நாடுகளிலேயே வேரூன்றி வாழும் வாய்ப்புக்களும் பெருகும்.

சீரியதோர் உலகை உருவாக்குவதற்கு முக்கியமான தேவை... முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்களை முற்றிலும் நீக்குவது. அன்னியராய், அகதிகளாய் ஒரு நாட்டிற்குள் வருவோரைக் குறித்து தவறானக் கருத்துக்களை மக்கள் மனதில் பதிப்பது பெரும் ஆபத்து. நாட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்துள்ள அன்னியரால் தங்கள் நாட்டின் பாதுகாப்பும், கலாச்சாரமும் குலைந்துவிடும்; தங்கள் வேலைவாய்ப்புக்கள் பறிக்கப்படும்; நாட்டில் வன்முறையும், குற்றங்களும் பெருகும் என்ற பல முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்கள் மக்கள் மனதில் வேரூன்றி விடுகின்றன. இவ்வெண்ணங்களை மக்களிடையே விதைப்பன நமது ஊடகங்கள். நாட்டிற்குள் தஞ்சம் தேடிவரும் அன்னியரைக் குறித்து உண்மையான, சரியான தகவல்களை ஊடங்கள் வழங்கினால், பாதகமான முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்கள் நீங்கி,  அன்னியருக்கு அடைக்கலம் தரக்கூடிய பரந்த மனது வளர வாய்ப்புண்டு.

அகதிகளாய், அன்னியராய் நாடுவிட்டு நாடு செல்வோருக்கு அன்னை மரியாவும், புனித யோசேப்பும் அழகிய எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்கள். பதவி வெறி பிடித்த ஏரோதின் கொடுமையிலிருந்து குழந்தை இயேசுவைக் காப்பதற்காக, எகிப்திற்குத் தப்பிச் சென்ற அன்னைமரியாவும், புனித யோசேப்பும், நாடுவிட்டு நாடு துரத்தப்படும் மக்களுக்குப் பாதுகாவல் அருள்வார்களாக!

சொந்த நாட்டையும், அடையாளத்தையும் இழந்து, உலகில் அலையும் மக்கள் தங்கள் தாயகம் திரும்பி, நலமுடன், மாண்புடன் வாழும் வழிகள் உலக நாடுகள் அனைத்திலும் உருவாகவேண்டும் என்று சிறப்பாகச் செபிப்போம். நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் நமக்குரிய மதிப்பை முதலில் நமக்குள் நாமே வளர்த்துக்கொண்டு, பிறருக்கும் அவரவருக்குரிய மதிப்பை வழங்க ஆரம்பித்தால், உலகம் மதிப்பு பெறும், மீட்பு பெறும்.

மதிப்பை விதைப்போம். மாண்பை அறுவடை செய்வோம்.
