May 11, this Sunday – the second Sunday in May – is celebrated as Mother’s Day in more than 80 countries around the world. The Church also invites us to celebrate this Sunday as the Good Shepherd Sunday as well as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. There is an intrinsic connection among all these three days – namely, Mother’s Day, Good Shepherd Sunday and World Day of Prayer for Vocations!

Mother’s Day… Is it Mothers’ Day - Plural? Or Mother’s Day - Singular? Anna Jarvis, the lady who popularised this day in the U.S., answers this question: In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association. "She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world." We are not celebrating ‘Mother’ as a concept, but Mother as a concrete person – Mom – in our personal lives. We are thankful to Anna Jarvis for her efforts to popularise this lovely day. Unfortunately, Anna was appalled by the way this day was commercialised in a few years. This day, sadly, has been hijacked by the commercial world very much. We need to redeem this day from the clutches of the market people!

Reading through quite a few vignettes on the evolution of this day, I was very impressed with the "Mother's Day Proclamation" written by Julia Ward Howe… once again, from the Wikipedia:

The "Mother's Day Proclamation" by Julia Ward Howe was one of the early calls to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States. Written in 1870, Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation was a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. The Proclamation was tied to Howe's feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level.

From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own.

It says: "Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."

Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.

As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,

Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.

Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means

Whereby the great human family can live in peace,

Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,

But of God…

This poem, as we see, was written as a mother’s response to wars. Our world is constantly at war and hence this poem has relevance for us today. The suggestion given by Julia towards the end of the passage got my attention. As men leave their homes to fight the war, women too must leave their homes to fight for peace.

On this special day – Mother’s Day – we shall celebrate our own Moms. It is our duty to liberate this special Day from the clutches of commercial exploitation, which heaps on us packed gifts. Instead of these ready-made gifts, we need to unpack the real gift called Mom.

It is significant that on this day the Church invites us to celebrate the Good Shepherd Sunday. Good Shepherd was probably the oldest figure by which Jesus was represented. The early Church remembered Jesus more as a Good Shepherd than by any other imagery. A good shepherd is more of a mother to the sheep.

All of us – male and female – do possess motherly instincts in us. We should not hesitate to accept this. Pope Francis expressed this in a different way when he shared the homily on the day when he took up the leadership of the Church on the Feast of St Joseph last year – March 19, 2013. He spoke of how the responsibility of protection and leadership draw their inspiration from St Joseph, the protector of the Holy Family. 

“Here I would add one more thing: caring, protecting, demands goodness, it calls for a certain tenderness. In the Gospels, Saint Joseph appears as a strong and courageous man, a working man, yet in his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love. We must not be afraid of goodness, of tenderness!” (Pope Francis)

Tenderness is usually considered as a feminine (and hence, weak) quality. How wrong! We are glad that our Holy Father has made it more than clear that we must not be afraid of goodness, of tenderness!

In the Gospel chosen for the Good Shepherd Sunday (John 10:1-10), Jesus talks of how he, the Good Shepherd, would provide safety and security to his sheep. This discourse of Jesus defines three main qualities of a good shepherd:

Calling the sheep by name.

Leading them.

Laying down one’s life for the sheep.

Being called by name is one of my favourite themes found in the Bible. Every time I reflect on this theme, my mind automatically tends to think of how our present generation is marked more by numbers than by names. Our identity is tied up very much with numbers, especially for those living in the so-called advanced countries. If a person living in one of these advanced countries loses her / his wallet with all the “cards”, it would almost erase one’s identity. It is scary to think of how much our identity is tied up to plastic cards and numbers. As against this, the idea of being called by name must define our identity and make each of us unique.

Jesus would call each of his sheep by name and lead them to green pastures. Legend has it that Napolean knew all his soldiers by name and not simply by their designated number. I guess that a phenomenal memory alone is not enough to register names in one’s mind. True involvement with each person guarantees this. This is the hallmark of a true leader – being truly interested and involved with each individual!

True interest and involvement may demand from a true leader the ultimate test of his leadership, namely, to risk one’s life for the followers, as illustrated by the Jesuit Priest, Fr Frans van der Lugt who decided to stay on in Homs, Syria, with the suffering people. Both Christians and Moslems benefitted by his courageous decision. He paid the price of his decision by his death on April 7, 2014. His good friend, another Jesuit, Fr Paolo dall Oglio, also remained with the people although both of them were given a choice to leave the country. Fr Oglio who was kidnapped in July 2013 and nothing is known of him yet.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we also celebrate maternal instincts manifested by the Good Shepherd. These tender instincts are planted in each of us. Only with motherly care can we sustain this world in peace! The World Day of Prayer for Vocations is specifically directed towards young men and women to heed the call of Christ to follow Religious, Priestly life. We know that May and June are the months when young men and women make important decisions in their life – in terms of further studies, choosing a job, a way of life, choosing a partner etc. Personally I consider all the choices we make to lead a meaningful life of service to others can be called a ‘Vocation’! Jesus called only family persons to follow him and carry forward his mission!

May ‘Mother’s Day’ and the ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’ inspire us to follow our call to serve others with ‘goodness and tenderness’!

இன்று அன்னை தினம். உலகின் 80க்கும் மேற்பட்ட நாடுகளில் ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் மே மாதம் இரண்டாம் ஞாயிறு அன்னை தினமாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. இந்தியா, இலங்கை, பாகிஸ்தான், பங்களாதேஷ், ஆஸ்திரேலியா, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் என்று பல நாடுகளில் இவ்வாண்டு மே மாதம் 11ம் தேதி கொண்டாடப்படும் அன்னை தினத்தை நம் ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையின் முதல் பகுதியாக்குவோம்.

அன்னைக்கென வருடத்தின் ஒரு நாளை அர்ப்பணிக்கும் எண்ணம் 19ம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஆரம்பமானது. சமூக ஆர்வலரும், கவிஞருமான Julia Ward Howe, 1870ம் ஆண்டு சக்திவாய்ந்த ஒரு கவிதையை எழுதினார். "அன்னைதின அறைகூவல்" (Mother's Day Proclamation) என்ற பெயரில் வெளியான இக்கவிதை, உலகெங்கும் அன்னை தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடுவதற்கு வித்திட்டது. இக்கவிதை விவரிக்கும் பெண்மை, தாய்மை, தலைமைத்துவம் ஆகியப் பண்புகள் நமது இன்றைய உலகிற்கு மிகவும் தேவையான பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தருகின்றன. இதோ இக்கவிதையின் வரிகள்:

மகளிரே, இன்று எழுந்து நில்லுங்கள்! இதயமுள்ள மகளிரே எதிர்த்து நில்லுங்கள்!

உங்களது திருமுழுக்கு, தண்ணீரால் நடந்திருந்தாலும், கண்ணீரால் நடந்திருந்தாலும் சரி... இப்போது எழுந்து நில்லுங்கள், எதிர்த்து நில்லுங்கள்.

உறுதியாகச் சொல்லுங்கள்:

“வாழ்வின் மிக முக்கியக் கேள்விகளின் விடைகளைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் உரிமையை குடும்பத்துடன் சிறிதும் தொடர்பற்ற நிறுவனங்களுக்கு விட்டுக்கொடுக்க மாட்டோம்.

சண்டைகளில் உயிர்களைக் கொன்று குவித்த கொலை நாற்றத்துடன் வீடு திரும்பும் கணவர்கள், எங்கள் அரவணைப்பையும், ஆரவார வரவேற்பையும் பெறுவதற்கு நாங்கள் இணங்கமாட்டோம்.

பிறரன்பு, கருணை, பொறுமை என்று நாங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை மாற்றி, அவற்றிற்கு எதிரான பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தருவதற்காக, அரசோ, வேறெந்த நிறுவனமோ எங்கள் குழந்தைகளை எங்களிடமிருந்து பறிப்பதற்கு நாங்கள் விடமாட்டோம்.

ஒரு நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த பெண்களாகிய நாங்கள், மற்றொரு நாட்டுப் பெண்கள் மீது கனிவு கொண்டவர்கள். எனவே, எங்கள் மகன்கள் அப்பெண்களின் மகன்களைக் காயப்படுத்த விடமாட்டோம்.

நிர்மூலமாக்கப்பட்ட இந்தப் பூமியின் அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து எழும் ஓர் ஓலம் எங்கள் குரல்களுடன் இணைகிறது. அது சொல்வது இதுதான்: "ஆயுதங்களைக் களையுங்கள்! ஆயுதங்களைக் களையுங்கள்! உயிர் குடிக்கும் வாள் ஒருநாளும் நீதியை நிலைநாட்டும் தராசு ஆகாது!" என்பதே பூமியின் அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து எழும் அந்த ஓலம்.

போர்க்கள அழைப்பைக் கேட்டு, தங்கள் நிலங்களையும், தொழிற்சாலைகளையும் விட்டுச் சென்றுள்ள ஆண்களைப் போல், பெண்களும் தங்கள் இல்லங்களை விட்டு வெளியேறட்டும். போரில் ஈடுபடும் ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் நல்ல முடிவுகள் உருவாக, பெண்களும் தங்கள் வீடுகளை விட்டு வெளியேறட்டும். போரில் இறந்தோரை நினைவுகூர, அவர்களுக்காக அழுது புலம்ப, பெண்கள் ஒன்று சேரட்டும். இந்த மனிதக் குடும்பம் அமைதியில் வாழ்வதற்குரிய வழிமுறைகளைப் பெண்கள் கலந்து பேசட்டும்.

தாய், அல்லது அன்னை என்றதும் வீட்டுக்குள், அடுப்படியில் முடங்கிக் கிடக்கும் பெண்ணாக அவர்களை எண்ணிப்பார்த்த காலத்தைக் கடந்து, சமுதாயத்தில் நல்ல முடிவுகளை எடுக்க, பெண்கள் வீட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டும்; அவர்களது மென்மை கலந்த உறுதி உலகின் பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்கும் வழிகளை உருவாக்கும் என்று 19ம் நூற்றாண்டில் எழுதப்பட்ட இக்கவிதை முழங்குகிறது. அமெரிக்காவில் உள்நாட்டுப் போர் நடந்த காலத்தில் இக்கவிதை எழுதப்பட்டது. அப்போரின் விளைவுகளைக் கண்ட Julia Ward Howe அவர்கள் எழுதிய இவ்வரிகள், இன்றும் நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள அவலங்களைக் கூறுகின்றன. அத்துடன், அன்னையர் இவ்வுலகிற்குத் தேவையான பல முக்கிய முடிவுகளை எடுக்க, பலத் துறைகளில் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பை மேற்கொள்ள முன்வரவேண்டும் என்பதையும் இக்கவிதை முழங்குகிறது.

பல வடிவங்களில் வன்முறையைச் சந்தித்து காயப்பட்டிருக்கும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு, தாய்மை, பெண்மை ஆகிய குணமளிக்கும் குணங்கள் அதிகம் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. எனவே, இந்த அன்னை தினம் வெறும் வியாபாரத் திருநாளாக இல்லாமல், நம் ஒவ்வொருவரிலும் உள்ள தாய்மையை வெளிப்படுத்தும் ஒரு நாளாக, அதன் வழியாக உலகின் அமைதிக்கு உறுதியான அடித்தளமிடும் ஒரு நாளாக இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று சிறப்பாக வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம்.

அன்னை தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடும்போது, பெண்மை, தாய்மை என்ற மென்மையான பண்புகளை இவ்வுலகம் உணர வேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுகின்றோம். இப்பண்புகள் பெண்களுக்கு மட்டுமே உரியன என்பது தவறான கருத்து. அனைத்து மனிதர்களிடமும் இந்த மென்மையான பண்புகள் காணப்படவேண்டும். குறிப்பாக, இவ்வுலகின் முக்கிய முடிவுகளை எடுக்கும் தலைவர்கள் மத்தியில் இந்தப் பண்புகள் மேலோங்கி வளர வேண்டும்.

திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், சென்ற ஆண்டு தலைமைப் பணியை ஏற்ற புனித யோசேப்பு திருநாளன்று (2013, மார்ச் 19), தலைமைப் பணி, பாதுகாக்கும் பணி ஆகியவற்றைக் குறித்து அவர் பேசியது  நம் கவனத்தை இப்போது ஈர்க்கிறது:

பாதுகாவல் என்ற பணிக்கு, தலைமைப் பணிக்கு, நன்மைத்தனமும், மென்மையும் கொண்டிருப்பது அவசியம். புனித  யோசேப்பு, உடலளவில் உறுதிவாய்ந்த தொழிலாளியாக இருந்தார் எனினும், மனதில் மென்மை உணர்வுகள் கொண்டிருந்ததால், அவர் பாதுகாவலராக இருக்க முடிந்தது. மென்மையான மனது கொண்டிருப்பதை வலுவிழந்த நிலையாகக் காண்பது தவறு. மென்மை உணர்வுகள் கொண்டோரிடமே, கனிவு, கருணை, பிறரின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிப்பது போன்ற நற்பண்புகள் காணப்படும். எனவே, நன்மைத்தனத்தையும், மென்மையான உணர்வுகளையும் கண்டு நாம் அஞ்சக்கூடாது.

புனித யோசேப்பின் கண்காணிப்பில் வளர்ந்த இயேசு, நன்மைத்தனமும், மென்மையான உணர்வுகளும் கொண்ட ஒரு நல்ல ஆயனாக தன்னை உருவகித்துப் பேசிய வார்த்தைகள் மக்கள் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதிந்தன. எனவேதான், கிறிஸ்துவை ஓவியமாகத் தீட்ட முனைந்த பலர், துவக்கத்தில் அவரை ஒரு நல்ல ஆயனாகவே வடித்தனர். தாய்மை உணர்வுகளும், தலைமைப் பண்பும் கொண்ட அந்த நல்ல ஆயனுக்கு இந்த ஞாயிறு அர்ப்பணிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

இஞ்ஞாயிறை நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறென்றும், இறையழைத்தல் ஞாயிறென்றும் கொண்டாட தாய் திருஅவை நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். தாயாக நம்மைக் காத்து, தலைவராக நம்மை வழி நடத்தும் நல்லாயனை எண்ணிப் பார்க்கும்போது, மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டரைப் பற்றிய ஒரு கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.

மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டர் தன் படையுடன் மக்ரான் என்ற பாலை நிலத்தைக் கடக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. கொளுத்தும் வெயிலும், எரிக்கும் மணலும் வீரர்களின் உயிரைக் குடிக்கும் தீயாய் மாறின. அலெக்சாண்டரும் தாகத்தால் துடித்தார். அவர் தாகத்தைத் தணிக்க, இரு தளபதிகள் நீண்ட தூரம் நடந்து, தங்கள் கவசத்தில் சிறிது தண்ணீர் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அலெக்சாண்டர் அத்தளபதிகளின் விசுவாசத்தைப் பாராட்டினார். பின்னர், அவர்களிடம், "வீரர்களுக்கும் தண்ணீர் கிடைக்க வழி உண்டா?" என்று கேட்க, அவர்கள், "இல்லை மன்னா. உங்கள் ஒருவருக்கு மட்டுமே தண்ணீர் கிடைத்தது." என்று சொன்னார்கள். வீரர்களுக்குத் தண்ணீர் இல்லாதபோது, தனக்கும் தண்ணீர் தேவையில்லை என்று கவசத்தில் இருந்த நீரை மணலில் ஊற்றினார் அலெக்சாண்டர். சூழ இருந்த வீரர்கள், தங்கள் தலைவனைப் பெருமையுடன் எண்ணி, ஆர்ப்பரித்தனர்.

தன்னைப் பின் தொடர்பவர்களின் இன்ப, துன்பங்களில்... முக்கியமாக, அவர்களின் துன்பங்களில் தன்னையே இணைத்துக் கொள்பவரே உண்மைத் தலைவர். உண்மை ஆயர். தன்னை நல்ல ஆயனாக உருவகித்து இயேசு கூறும் வார்த்தைகள் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியாக ஒலிக்கின்றன. அத்துடன், ஆடுகளின் நலனில் அக்கறை கொள்ளாமல், தங்கள் சுயநலனுக்காக, சுய ஆதாயத்திற்காக ஆடுகளைப் பலியாக்கும் திருடர், கொள்ளையர், கூலிக்கு மேய்ப்பவர் ஆகியோருடன் தன்னை ஒப்பிட்டு இயேசு பேசியுள்ள வார்த்தைகள் நம் மனதில் பல கேள்விகளை ஏக்கங்களை உருவாக்குகின்றன.

இந்தியாவில், இன்னும் சில நாட்களில் தேர்தல் முடிவுகள் வெளியாகவுள்ளன. நல்ல தலைவர்களைத்தான் நாம் தேர்ந்தேடுத்திருக்கிறோமா என்ற கேள்வியும், ஏக்கமும் இந்நாட்களில் மனதை நிறைக்கின்றன.

நல்ல ஆயனுக்கு, நல்ல தலைவனுக்கு உரிய பண்புகளை இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். பெயர் சொல்லி பாசமாய் அழைத்தல், முன்னே சென்று ஆடுகளை வழி நடத்துதல் ஆகிய நற்பண்புகளுடன் ஆயனின் மற்றொரு முக்கியமான குணத்தையும் யோவான் நற்செய்தி 10ம் பிரிவில் இயேசு குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.

நல்லாயனின் ஒரு முக்கியமான குணம்... ஆடுகளுக்காகத் தன் உயிரையேத் தருவது. எந்த ஒரு சூழலிலும் தன்னைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்காமல், மற்றவர்களையே எண்ணி வாழ்வதைப் போன்ற ஓர் உயர்வான வாழ்வு உலகில் இல்லை. மனித வரலாற்றில் தங்களையே மறந்து, பிறருக்காக வாழ்ந்த பலரைப்பற்றி கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம்.

கடந்த ஈராண்டுகளாக முற்றுகையாலும், வன்முறைகளாலும் துன்புற்றுவரும் சிரியாவின் ஹோம்ஸ் நகர் மக்களைவிட்டுப் பிரியாமல், அவர்களுடனேயே தங்கியவர் 76 வயது நிறைந்த இயேசு சபை அருள் பணியாளர் Frans van der Lugt அவர்கள். கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் மட்டுமல்லாமல், இஸ்லாமியரும் இவரது பாதுகாப்பைத் தேடிவந்தனர். இவர், ஏப்ரல் 7ம் தேதி அடையாளம் தெரியாத ஒருவரால் சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்பட்டார்.

தாய்மை, தலைமைத்துவம் ஆகிய உன்னதப் பண்புகளை வளர்க்கும் நாற்றங்கால், நமது குடும்பங்கள். குடும்பங்களில்தான் இறை அழைத்தலின் விதைகளும் ஊன்றப்படுகின்றன.

·         எனவே, அன்னை தினம், நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு, இறை அழைத்தல் ஞாயிறு என்ற மூன்று ஆழமான எண்ணங்களைக் கொண்டாடும் இந்த நாளில், நம் குடும்பங்களுக்காகவும் சிறப்பான செபங்களை எழுப்புவோம்.

·         பள்ளிப் படிப்பு, கல்லூரி படிப்பு ஆகியவற்றை முடித்துவிட்டு, வாழ்வில் சில முக்கிய முடிவுகளை எடுக்கக் காத்திருக்கும் இளையோரை இன்று சிறப்பாக இறைவனின் திருப்பாதம் கொணர்வோம். நல்லாயனாம் இயேசுவின் அழைத்தலை ஏற்று, மக்கள் பணிக்குத் தங்களையே வழங்க முன் வரும் இளையோரை இறைவன் வழிநடத்த வேண்டுமென்று இறையழைத்தல் ஞாயிறன்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

·         மக்கள் மீது உண்மையான அக்கறை கொண்ட தலைவர்களை இந்தியத் தாய் இந்த தேர்தல் வழியே பெற்றெடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று உருக்கமாக மன்றாடுவோம்.
