We come to this Sunday’s liturgy with a heavy heart. Our heart is heavy due to the unbridled abuse of brute power unleashed by the Israel army on innocent civilians in Gaza; the senseless retaliation of the Hamas; and the mysterious crash of the Malaysian Airlines in Ukraine, killing 298 persons.

Our heart bleeds at the thought of the price paid by innocent civilians, especially children, for the senseless hatred sown and harvested by adults with warped, fundamental thinking. We bring the massacre that is going on in Gaza to this Sunday’s liturgy for two reasons: The first is – that this ‘war’ in Gaza affects all of us. The second reason is – in today’s liturgy Jesus talks of how easy it is for us to mix up the wheat and the weeds. (Matthew 13: 24-30)

The senseless massacre perpetrated in Gaza has many unseen layers by which all of us become ‘part-time-players’. Let me try to explain. Here is a mail sent by Avaaz, the voice of conscience operating via the internet. ‘The Guardian’ considers Avaaz "the globe's largest and most powerful online activist network".

This mail is titled “Israel-Palestine: This is how it ends”. Here are some extracts that give us an idea that ‘we are all in this together’.

As a new round of violence kicks off in Israel-Palestine and more children are killed, it's not enough just to call for another ceasefire. It’s time to take definitive non-violent action to end this decade long nightmare.

Our governments have failed -- while they have talked peace and passed UN resolutions, they and our companies have continued to aid, trade and invest in the violence. The only way to stop this hellish cycle of Israel confiscating Palestinian lands, daily collective punishment of innocent Palestinian families, Hamas firing rockets, and Israel bombing Gaza is to make the economic cost of this conflict too high to bear.

We know it works -- when EU countries issued guidelines not to fund the illegal Israeli settlements it caused an earthquake in the cabinet, and when citizens successfully persuaded a Dutch pension fund, PGGM, to withdraw, it created a political storm.

This may not feel like a direct way to stop the current killing, but history tells us that raising the financial cost of oppression can pave a path to peace. What caught my attention in this write-up was that the pension funds of unsuspecting senior citizens of other countries have been invested in Israel. It is thus that we, the unsuspecting citizens, are made ‘part-time players’ of such senseless tragedies. That is reason no.1 to bring this conflict to our liturgy and pray for lasting peace in the Holy Land! We pray that the Good Lord gives us enough wisdom to see through the manipulations of the MNCs that rope us into bloody wars!

Reason no.2 is that today’s gospel invites us to think of the wheat and the weeds that grow within us and around us. In the tragic situation prevailing in Gaza, the media, as usual, is projecting only those who sow the ‘weeds’. But, there are many persons on both sides of this conflict who are sensible and who wish to sow and reap good seeds of peace.

For instance, Adam Keller, a peace activist from Israel has invited people to join him in a Peace Demonstration in Habima Square in Tel Aviv, on Saturday, 19 July 2014, around 8 p.m. The appeal Mr Keller has sent via the media is very strong and disturbing. Here are a few lines from his appeal:

It is forbidden to shoot at civilian populations. It is forbidden and still it happens. Both sides do it. Hamas shoots on the population of Israel. The IDF shoots at the population of Gaza.

Two equal sides? Far from it. The State of Israel has enormous military and economic strength. With massive financial assistance from the United States the State of Israel built the “Iron Dome” system, a great technological achievement which protects us. Therefore, the missile attacks on Israeli cities are mostly a nuisance. The air raid alarms are irritating, a bit disruptive to the routine of life, sometimes frightening – but not much more.

Gazans have no Iron Dome, no protection whatsoever against the death which falls down on them from the air and the sea and the land. The State of Israel is pounding Gaza, killing and killing and killing. True – The State of Israel has no premeditated purpose of killing innocent civilians, women and men and the elderly and children playing football on the beach. There is no premeditated purpose – but there is a reality. The killing of unarmed civilians in Gaza is going on, day by day and hour by hour. More than two hundred Palestinians have been killed. A large part of them were unarmed civilians, dozens of them were children. And it goes on.

Hence, Adam Keller, founder member of the Israeli peace campaign Gush Shalom, is inviting people to join with peace and human rights organizations in a protest against the cruel and unnecessary war called ” Operation Protective Edge”.

When I read this powerful write-up of Mr Keller, I did make a background check on who this person is. I was impressed by the information given in Wikipedia about this person:

Adam Keller (born 1955 in Tel Aviv-Yafo) is an Israeli peace activist who was among the founders of Gush Shalom, of which he is a spokesperson… Keller has served several prison terms for refusing reserve military duty in the 1967-occupied territories. In April-May 1988, Reserve Corporal Adam Keller was charged with "insubordination" and "spreading of propaganda harmful to military discipline" in that while on active military duty he had written on 117 tanks and other military vehicles graffiti with the text: "Soldiers of the IDF, refuse to be occupiers and oppressors, refuse to serve in the occupied territories!" as well as placing on electricity pylons in the military camp where he was serving - and on inside doors of the stalls in the officers' toilet - stickers with the slogans "Down with the occupation!". Keller was convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment. (Wikipedia)

Whether the peace demonstration that took place in Tel Aviv will bear fruit or not… only time will tell. We know that weeds grow faster than regular plants of grain. Hence, they are more easily seen. The weeds of violence that sprout by the dozens daily get easy media coverage, while so many positive efforts take longer time to bear fruits.

It requires a lot more patience to grow a regular plant. This is the key theme in today’s parable. The owner of the fields is presented as the personification of patience. When his workers wanted to gather the weeds, this is the wise response of the owner: 'No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.' (Mt. 13: 29-30)

While weeds of violence make headlines day after day, the wheat of peace and reconciliation take longer time to grow. They require lots of patience. They may never make the headlines at all. Hence, they require perseverance too!

Patience, perseverance, prayer are the key themes proposed by Pope Francis in restoring peace in the land where the Prince of Peace was born! Let us join the Holy Father in this peace effort with determination!

Israel-Palestine - This is how it ends - Avaaz Campaign

கனத்த இதயத்துடன் நாம் இந்த ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையைத் துவக்குகிறோம். இரத்தவெறி கொண்டு, அப்பாவி மக்களைக் கொன்றுவரும் இஸ்ரேல், பாலஸ்தீன நாடுகளை எண்ணியும், வெளிப்படையான காரணம் ஏதுமின்றி, உக்ரைன் நாட்டில் எரிந்து விழுந்த மலேசிய விமானத்தில் உயிரிழந்தோரை எண்ணியும் நம் மனம் கனத்துப் போயுள்ளது.

உலகின் ஏதோ ஒரு மூலையில், ஏதோ சில நாடுகள் சண்டையிடுவதை நாம் ஏன் ஞாயிறு சிந்தனைக்குக் கொணரவேண்டும் என்ற கேள்வி எழலாம். இன்று உலகின் எந்த ஒரு மூலையில் பிரச்சனைகள் வெடித்தாலும், அவை உலகில் ஏனைய நாடுகளையும், அங்கு வாழும் நம் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பாதிக்கின்றன என்பதை நாம் உணரவேண்டும்.

இஸ்ரேல், பாலஸ்தீன மோதல், இரு சிறு நாடுகளுக்கிடையே நிகழும் பிரச்சனை அல்ல. அதன் பின்னணியில் பல நாடுகள், பல பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்கள், அந்த நிறுவனங்களுடன் தொடர்புகொண்டுள்ள நாம் என்று அனைவரும் இந்தப் பிரச்சனையின் ஒரு பகுதியாகிறோம்.

இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவம், வரைமுறை ஏதுமில்லாமல், அப்பாவி மக்கள் மீது தன் படைபலத்தைக் காட்டிவருகிறது என்றால், அந்த நாட்டை, அந்நாட்டின் இராணுவத்தை அத்தனை சக்தி மிக்கதாக மாற்றியதில் நமக்கும் பங்கு உண்டு என்பதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டும். புரியவில்லையா? விளக்க முயல்கிறேன்.

இஸ்ரேல் நாட்டில், பல அரசுகளும், வங்கிகளும் தங்கள் பணத்தை பல வழிகளில் முதலீடு செய்துள்ளன. இந்தப் பணத்தின் ஒருபகுதி முதியோரின் ஓய்வுத் தொகையிலிருந்து திரட்டப்பட்ட பணம் என்பதற்குத் தகுந்த ஆதாரங்கள் உள்ளன. தங்கள் ஓய்வு காலத்தின் பாதுகாப்பு கருதி முதியோர் தங்கள் அரசிடமும், வங்கிகளிலும் தங்கள் ஓய்வூதியத்தை செலுத்தியுள்ளனர். சில அரசுகளும், வங்கிகளும், இஸ்ரேல் அரசின் பல திட்டங்களில் இந்தப் பணத்தை முதலீடு செய்துள்ளன. இஸ்ரேல் அரசின் முக்கியத் திட்டங்களில் ஒன்று, அதன் வலிமை மிக்க இராணுவம். எனவே, தீர ஆய்வு செய்தால், அரசிடமும், இவ்வங்கிகளிலும் தங்கள் ஓய்வூதியத்தை ஒப்படைத்த முதியவர்களும், இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவம், தற்போது மேற்கொண்டுள்ள இத்தாக்குதல்களுக்கு ஏதோ ஒருவகையில் காரணமாக உள்ளனர் என்பதுதானே எதார்த்தம்?

ஓய்வுகாலம் என்ற நிலத்தில் பாதுகாப்பு என்ற பயிரை வளர்க்க, முதியோர் தங்கள் பணத்தை அரசிடமும், இவ்வங்கிகளிலும் ஒப்படைத்தனர். ஆனால், அவர்கள் ஒப்படைத்த பணம், வன்முறை என்ற களைகளை வேற்று நாடுகளில் வளர்த்துவிட்டன. உலகின் ஏதோ ஒரு மூலையில், ஏதோ சில நாடுகள் போரில் ஈடுபட்டால், அதில் நாமும் ஏதோ ஒருவகையில் பிணைக்கப்படுகிறோம் என்பது ஓரளவாகிலும் தெளிவாகியிருக்கும் என்று நம்புகிறேன்.

தன் வயலில் நல்ல கோதுமைக் கதிர்கள் வளர வேண்டுமென்றால், தன்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ள வயல்களிலும் நல்ல கதிர்கள் வளர வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன், அந்த வயல்களின் உரிமையாளர்களுக்கு நல்ல விதைகளைக் கொடுத்தவரைப் பற்றி சென்ற வாரம் நாம் சிந்தித்தோம். அதேபோல், இவ்வுலகம் என்ற வயலில் களைகள் அதிகம் வளர்ந்தால், அதற்கு நாம் அனைவரும் பொறுப்பு என்ற உணர்வுடன் இன்றைய ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையைத் தொடர்வோம்.

இந்த ஞாயிறன்று வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள நற்செய்தியில், நிலத்தில் விதைக்கப்பட்ட கோதுமையையும், களைகளையும் குறித்து இயேசு அழகான ஓர் உவமையைக் கூறியுள்ளார். இஸ்ரேல், பாலஸ்தீனம் என்ற இரு நாடுகளிலும், அமைதியை விரும்பும் கதிர்களாக வளர்ந்துள்ள மக்கள் பல்லாயிரம். அவர்கள் நடுவே, வெறுப்பு, வன்முறை, பழிக்குப் பழி என்ற உணர்வுகளை வளர்க்கும் களைகளாக அரசுகளும், ஒரு சில அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுக்களும் வளர்ந்துள்ளன. இந்தக் களைகள் தற்போது, அவ்விரு நாடுகளிலும் வளர்ந்துள்ள மக்கள் என்ற கதிர்களை விழுங்கி வருகின்றன.

இஸ்ரேல் நாட்டில் பிறந்தாலும், இஸ்ரேல் அரசின் நடவடிக்கைகளை எதிர்த்து, அமைதியை நிலைநாட்ட அங்கு வளர்ந்துள்ள ஓர் அழகிய கதிரின் பெயர், Adam Keller. Tel Aviv நகரில், Gush Shalom என்ற அமைதி இயக்கத்தை நிறுவிய Adam Keller என்ற யூதர், இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவத்தில், கட்டாயத்தின் பேரில் இணைந்தாலும், ஆக்கிரமிக்கப்பட்ட பாலஸ்தீனப் பகுதியில் பணியாற்ற மறுத்தார். எனவே பல முறை சிறை தண்டனை பெற்றார். அமைதியை விரும்பும் அழகிய கதிராக வளர்ந்துள்ள Adam Keller அவர்கள், ஜூலை 18, இச்சனிக்கிழமை, Tel Aviv நகரில் Habima என்ற சதுக்கத்தில் அமைதிப் பேரணி ஒன்றை முன்னின்று நடத்தினார். அந்தப் பேரணிக்கு அவர் விடுத்த அழைப்பில், இஸ்ரேல் பாலஸ்தீன நாடுகளுக்கிடையே நடைபெறும் மோதலைக் குறித்து சில கருத்துக்களை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்:

அப்பாவி குடிமக்களைச் சுடுவது எந்த ஒரு நாட்டிலும் விதி முறைகளுக்கு முரணானது. எனினும் இரு தரப்பினரும் இந்த விதிமுறைகளை மீறி வருகின்றனர்.

இவ்விரு தரப்பினரும் சமமான, இணையான அமைப்புக்களா? இல்லவே இல்லை. அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாடு அள்ளித்தரும் நிதி உதவியுடன் இஸ்ரேல் அரசு, தன்னைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள "Iron Dome", அதாவது, "இரும்புக் கூரை" என்ற தற்காப்புத் தொழில்நுட்பத்தைக் அமைத்துள்ளது. எனவே, Hamas நடத்தும் தாக்குதல்கள், இஸ்ரேல் பகுதியில் அதிக சேதத்தை உருவாக்காத வாண வேடிக்கைகளாக மாறுகின்றன. அதிகப்படியாக, இஸ்ரேல் மக்கள் இழப்பதெல்லாம் இரவுத் தூக்கம்தான். ஆனால், இந்த 'இரும்புக் கூரை' வசதி இல்லாத ஏழை பாலஸ்தீன குடிமக்கள், இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவத்தால் பெருமளவில் கொல்லப்படுகின்றனர்.

கடற்கரையில் கால்பந்தாட்டம் ஆடிய சிறுவர் முதல், வயது முதிர்ந்தோர் வரை, ஒன்றுமறியா அப்பாவி மக்களின் உயிர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் பலியாகின்றன. இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவமும், Hamas போராளிகளும் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள அர்த்தமற்ற தாக்குதல்களை நிறுத்துமாறு, இச்சனிக்கிழமை இரவு, Habima சதுக்கத்தில் பேரணி ஒன்று நடைபெறுகிறது. அமைதியை விரும்புவோர், நம் எதிர்காலச் சந்ததியரைக் காப்பாற்ற விரும்புவோர் இந்தப் பேரணியில் கலந்துகொள்ள வாருங்கள்.

அமைதிக் கதிர்களை வளர்க்க விரும்பும் Adam Keller அவர்கள், களைகளை அகற்றி, கதிர்களை வளர்க்கும் பணிக்கென அனைவருக்கும் இந்த அழைப்பை விடுத்துள்ளார். நமது ஊடகங்கள், கதிர்களை விட, களைகளைப் பற்றி பேசுவதிலேயே குறியாக இருக்கின்றன என்பது நமக்குத் தெரிந்த உண்மை. கடந்த இரு நாட்களாக ஊடகங்கள், களைகளின் தாக்கத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூறும் பல செய்திகளில் ஒன்றை இங்கே தர விழைகிறேன்:

இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவம் மேற்கொண்ட ஏவுகணை தாக்குதலில் காசா பகுதியில் உள்ள ஒரு கத்தோலிக்கப் பங்குக் கோவிலின் அடுத்த கட்டிடம் தரைமட்டமானது. காசா பகுதியில் மாற்றுத் திறனாளிகளுக்கென, அன்னை தெரேசாவின் அருள் சகோதரிகள் நடத்திவரும் இல்லத்தை ஆபத்து சூழந்ததால், அங்கிருந்த சகோதரிகள், மாற்றுத் திறன் கொண்ட 28 குழந்தைகளுடனும், வயதான 9 பெண்களுடனும் பங்குக் கோவிலில் தஞ்சம் அடைந்துள்ளனர் என்றும், இவ்வியாழன் நடந்த தாக்குதலால் குழந்தைகளும் சகோதரிகளும் அச்சத்துடன் வாழ்கின்றனர் என்றும் அருள் சகோதரி ஒருவர் (Laudis) கூறினார்.

இந்தச் செய்தியை ஆய்வு செய்யும்போது, அன்னை தெரேசா அருள் சகோதரிகள் அப்பகுதியில் ஆற்றிவரும் அன்புப் பணிகள் என்ற பயிர்களைப் பாழாக்கும்வண்ணம், இஸ்ரேல் இராணுவத் தாக்குதல்கள் களைகளைப் போல் வளர்ந்து, கதிர்களைக் கொன்றுவிடும் ஆபத்தை உணர்கிறோம்.

இஸ்ரேல் பாலஸ்தீன நாடுகளிடையே நிலவி வரும் அர்த்தமற்ற உயிர் புலிகளைப் பற்றி இந்த ஞாயிறு பேசுவதற்கு இரு காரணங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒன்று... பழிக்குப் பழி, அழிவு என்ற களைகளை வளர்த்துவரும் இவ்விரு நாடுகளும், அமைதிக் கதிர்களை வளர்க்கும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபடவேண்டும் என்ற வேண்டுதல் நம்மிடமிருந்து எழவேண்டும். இது முதல் காரணம்.

கதிர்களை வளர்க்க இவ்வுலகில் பொறுமை கூடுதலாகத் தேவை என்பதை இன்றைய உவமை நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகிறது. இது இரண்டாவது காரணம். கதிர்களும், களைகளும் இணைந்து வளரும் உலகிற்கு இஸ்ரேல், பாலஸ்தீன நாடுகள் சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள். அங்கு நடப்பதெல்லாம் வெறும் போர் என்ற களைகள் மட்டுமல்ல. அமைதி முயற்சிகளும் அங்கு ஏராளமாக நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன.

எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, Adam Keller என்ற அந்த அமைதி விரும்பி, இச்சனிக்கிழமை மேற்கொண்ட பேரணி, அமைதி, அன்பு, மன்னிப்பு என்ற விதைகளை விதைத்துள்ளன என்று நம்புவோம். Adam Keller நடத்திய பேரணியின் தாக்கத்தைப் பொறுத்திருந்துதான் பார்க்கவேண்டும்.

வன்முறை என்ற களையின் தாக்கம் உடனடியாக வெளிப்படும். ஆனால், அன்பு, அமைதி, ஒப்புரவு என்ற கதிர்கள் வளர, அவற்றின் தாக்கத்தை உணர நமக்குப் பொறுமை வேண்டும். இந்தப் பொறுமையை இன்றைய உவமையில் நில உரிமையாளர் வடிவில் நாம் காண்கிறோம். தாங்கள் விதைத்த கோதுமை கதிர்கள் மத்தியில் பகைவன் ஒருவன் களைகளை விதைத்துவிட்டான் என்பதை அறிந்ததும், பணியாளர்கள் செயலில் இறங்கத் துடித்தனர். அவர்கள் ஆத்திரத்திற்கும், ஆர்வத்திற்கும் மாற்று மருந்தாக, நிலா உரிமையாளர் அவர்களுக்கு பொறுமையின் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தந்தார். இதோ நற்செய்தியின் அந்த அழகியப் பகுதி:

மத்தேயு நற்செய்தி 13: 29-30

பணியாளர்கள் அவரிடம், “நாங்கள் போய் களைகளைப் பறித்துக் கொண்டு வரலாமா? உம் விருப்பம் என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர், “வேண்டாம், களைகளைப் பறிக்கும்போது அவற்றோடு சேர்த்துக் கோதுமையையும் நீங்கள் பிடுங்கிவிடக்கூடும். அறுவடைவரை இரண்டையும் வளர விடுங்கள். அறுவடை நேரத்தில் அறுவடை செய்வோரிடம், 'முதலில் களைகளைப் பறித்துக் கொண்டு வந்து எரிப்பதற்கெனக் கட்டுகளாகக் கட்டுங்கள். கோதுமையையோ என் களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்த்து வையுங்கள்' என்று கூறுவேன்” என்றார்.

இந்தப் பொறுமையையும், களைகள் மத்தியில் கதிர்களும் வளரும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையையும் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களும் தன் புனித பூமி திருப்பயணம் முதல், வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தபோதெல்லாம் வெளிப்படுத்தி வருகிறார். கடந்த மாதம் 8ம் தேதியன்று இவ்விரு நாடுகளின் தலைவர்களும் வத்திக்கான் வந்திருந்து, திருத்தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் அமைதிக்காக வேண்டினர். இவ்வெள்ளி காலையில், இஸ்ரேல் அரசுத் தலைவர், Shimon Peres அவர்களையும், பாலஸ்தீன அரசுத் தலைவர் Mahmoud Abbas அவர்களையும் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் தொலைபேசியில் அழைத்துப் பேசியபோது, தான் அவ்விரு நாடுகளுக்காக தொடர்ந்து செபித்து வருவதாகத் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

வெறுப்பு, வன்முறை என்ற களைகள் சூழ்ந்திருக்கும் இவ்வுலகில், நாம் நம்பிக்கையைத் தளரவிடாமல், அன்பு, அமைதி, ஒப்புரவு, மன்னிப்பு என்ற நற்கதிர்களை வளர்க்கும் வரம் வேண்டுவோம். அமைதியின் இளவரசனாம் இயேசு பிறந்த புனித பூமியில், அமைதிக் கதிர்கள் மீண்டும் செழித்து வளரவேண்டும் என்று, திருத்தந்தையுடன் இணைந்து, அறுவடையின் தலைவராம் தந்தை இறைவனிடம் மன்றாடுவோம்.
