After attending a convention led by Billy Graham, a woman wrote to him: “Dear Sir, I feel that God is calling me to preach the Gospel. But the trouble is that I have twelve children. What shall I do?” The televangelist replied: “Dear Madam, I am delighted to hear that God has called you to preach the Gospel. I am even more delighted to hear that He has already provided you with a congregation in your own home.”

Humorous though this may sound, it is the simple truth. While the lady saw the children as a hurdle to pursue her mission of preaching the Gospel, Mr Graham saw them as the means to fulfil that mission. All of us have a ‘congregation’ in our own families where we are called to share the good news and make disciples. This is the core message of the Feast we are celebrating today – the Feast of the Ascension!

This Feast is not about Jesus going up into heaven in a splendid show of glory. It is more about the final message Jesus shared with his disciples. In the Gospels, as well in the Acts of the Apostles, there are different versions of where and when the Ascension took place. Was it in Jerusalem, in Bethany or in Galilee? Was it forty days later or soon after the Resurrection? These are unanswered questions. The Evangelists and the author of the Acts of the Apostles were not interested in the historical details of the event. They were more interested in the message – the Mission – entrusted to the disciples by Jesus. It will be a worthwhile effort to focus our attention on the farewell message of Jesus.

This message, like many other statements of Jesus, has been interpreted by Christians in very different, sometimes, contrary ways. The parting message of Jesus given in today’s Gospel goes like this: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). In the Gospel of Mark, the message is: Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. (Mark 16:15).

The moment we hear the phrases ‘making disciples’ and ‘proclaiming the good news’, our minds tend to assign these ‘duties’ to Bishops,  Priests and Religious. It would be good to take a look at those standing around Jesus when these mission statements were made. They were all simple family persons – fishermen, tax collector etc.

Moreover, most of us may imagine churches and pulpits as appropriate places to proclaim the good news, as did the mother of the twelve children. Billy Graham tried to bring her back to the solid ground by saying that the family – familiar surrounding – is the best ‘pulpit’. By choosing Galilee as the place to give his special mission, Jesus has already made it clear that familiar, day to day surroundings are the best places to proclaim the good news.

During the time of Jesus, the land of Israel was divided into three parts - Judea, Samaria and Galilee. Of these, Judea, with the temple of Jerusalem, was considered holy, noble and cultured. The Jews who lived in Judea considered the neighbouring Samaria an unholy area due to the presence of the Samaritans. Galilee, which was at the north, was also considered contaminated due to foreign influence.

Jesus chose Galilee as the ‘headquarters’ of his ministry. It was Galilee where Jesus chose his disciples for the first time and it was Galilee where he and his disciples spent quality time together. It was the same Galilee where Jesus met his disciples for the final time and gave them the great mission. By choosing Galilee, Jesus gives us a clear indication that the Gospel needs to be proclaimed starting from familiar surroundings.

This idea of proclaiming the good news in familiar surrounding makes more sense this year when we had been asked to stay home during the Lenten season, the Holy Week and, in some countries, even during the Feast of the Ascension. We can surely examine and see whether our houses have become places of ‘gospel proclamation’ as well as the school of formation for ‘making disciples’!

How are we to ‘proclaim the good news’ and ‘make disciples’ in an effective way? Many interpretations have been given to this statement and, accordingly, many methods of this ‘proclamation’ have been adopted. Here is one such attempt described by Joseph Bayly in his book ‘The Gospel Blimp’. It is about the attempt of Christian neighbours reaching out to the community for Christ. The family purchased a hot air balloon – blimp – to broadcast the Gospel to the community and dropped "bombs" on the town (These "bombs" were Gospel passages wrapped in coloured cellophane). They were also blaring Gospel songs so loudly from the blimp that the people had to run away closing their ears and the dogs began howling in response. In spite of the trouble and expense of this attempt to proclaim the good news, it failed miserably.

The point Joseph Bayly was making is that there is no substitute for loving, caring, and personal witness, even though this is slow, time-consuming, likely to cause anxiety and even likely to create some hostility. Relying heavily on fancied tools of communication to proclaim the good news, sometimes, may backfire.

It is significant that on the Feast of the Ascension, the Church celebrates the 54^th World Day of Social Communications. Pope Francis has published this year’s message with the title: “That you may tell your children and grandchildren” (Ex 10:2) - Life becomes history

Every year, the message for the World Day of Social Communications is published on January 24, the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, the patron saint of Catholic writers and the Catholic press. When Pope Francis published this year’s message on January 24, there was hardly any symptom of the pandemic that was to sweep the world in a month’s time. But, it is significant that the quote used in the title of this message was taken from the Book of Exodus. In this book, the ten plagues that ravaged Egypt are described from chapter 7 to chapter 12. In this section, the Lord tells Moses to recount to his children and grandchildren what signs the Lord had worked among the Egyptians and the Israelites during the plagues.   

While the COVID 19 pandemic is keeping most of us locked up, it is a good time to reflect on what the Lord has done to us and also to recount his blessings to our children and grandchildren.

Pope Francis has devoted his message to theme of story telling. Here are the opening lines of this year’s message:

I would like to devote this year’s Message to the theme of storytelling, because I believe that, so as not to lose our bearings, we need to make our own the truth contained in good stories. Stories that build up, not tear down; stories that help us rediscover our roots and the strength needed to move forward together. Amid the cacophony of voices and messages that surround us, we need a human story that can speak of ourselves and of the beauty all around us. A narrative that can regard our world and its happenings with a tender gaze. A narrative that can tell us that we are part of a living and interconnected tapestry. A narrative that can reveal the interweaving of the threads which connect us to one another.

The opening lines of this message seem to speak to us specifically during this pandemic. The mainstream media as well as the social media have been filled with stories that have torn the human family to pieces. In this midst of this ‘cacophony of voices and messages’ we are called to narrate stories that build up our confidence in humanity and pass on these stories to our children and our grandchildren. Such stories of tenderness have been shared in our media now and then. But, unfortunately, the overwhelming stories of tragedy have injected too much negativity in our common narrative.

Pope Francis, in his message pays special attention to how ‘disinformation’ and ‘falsehood’ have brainwashed many of us. He goes on to tell us that we need wisdom, courage, patience, and discernment to ‘rediscover stories’ that help us not to lose hope:

In an age when falsification is increasingly sophisticated, reaching exponential levels (as in deepfake), we need wisdom to be able to welcome and create beautiful, true and good stories. We need courage to reject false and evil stories. We need patience and discernment to rediscover stories that help us not to lose the thread amid today’s many troubles. We need stories that reveal who we truly are, also in the untold heroism of everyday life.

Pope Francis, in this message reminds us that Jesus was a great story teller. This great story teller, before his departure, called his disciples and asked them to continue proclaiming these stories of hope and love.

Let us close our thoughts with some powerful thoughts on how ‘story-telling’ will help us survive great tragedies of life. Life on earth is guaranteed as long as song, dance and story-telling live. Here is a quote from Oren Lyons, a Native American Faithkeeper: “Life will go on as long as there is someone to sing, to dance, to tell stories and to listen.”

John Shea, an expert on the theme of ‘storytelling in world religions’, also talks of the power of stories in his famous book ‘Stories of God – An Unauthorized Biography’:

“When we reach our limits, when our ordered worlds collapse, when we cannot enact our moral ideals, when we are disenchanted, we often enter into the awareness of Mystery... Our dwelling within Mystery is both menacing and promising, a relationship of exceeding darkness and undeserved light. In this situation, with this awareness, we do a distinctively human thing. We gather together and tell stories of God to calm our terror and hold our hope on high.”

When we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, as well as the World Day of Social Communications, we pray that every one of us cherish and nourish stories of hope and pass them on to our children and grandchildren. Thus, the world will be filled with the courageous proclamation of Good News and that all of us can become a grand family of true disciples!

இயேசு, தன் நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்க, இறையரசை அறிமுகப்படுத்த, கலிலேயாவைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார் (மத். 4:12-17). கலிலேயக் கடற்கரையில் அவர் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த சீடர்களுடன் இறுதி சந்திப்பை மேற்கொண்டது, மீண்டும் கலிலேய மலைப்பகுதியே! தன் பணிவாழ்வைத் துவக்கிய அதே பகுதிக்கு, தான் சீடர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த அதே பகுதிக்கு, தன் சீடர்களை மீண்டும் அழைத்து, அங்கிருந்து அவர்களது நற்செய்திப் பணி துவங்கவேண்டும் என்று இயேசு பணிக்கிறார். நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுதல், சீடர்களை உருவாக்குதல் போன்ற உன்னத பணிகள், அவரவர் வாழும் சூழல்களில், இல்லங்களில் துவங்கவேண்டும் என்பதை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி வழியே இயேசு நமக்கு மீண்டும் நினைவுறுத்துகிறார். ஆண்டவரின் விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழாவின் கருப்பொருள் இதுவே!

ஏனைய ஆண்டுகளை விட இவ்வாண்டு, விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழாவை நாம் இல்லங்களில் இருந்தவண்ணம் கொண்டாடுவது, இவ்விழாவின் கருப்பொருளை, அதாவது, நற்செய்தியின் பறைசாற்றலும், சீடர்களின் உருவாக்கமும் நாம் வாழும் சூழல்களில் உருவாகவேண்டும் என்ற கருப்பொருளை மீண்டும் நம் உள்ளங்களில் பதிக்க வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு வாய்ப்போ என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது.

கடந்த சில வாரங்களாக, பொது வழிபாடுகளுக்கு கோவில்கள் மூடப்பட்ட நிலையில், நம் இல்லங்கள், வழிபாட்டுத் தலங்களாக மாறியிருக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு. தொலைக்காட்சி அல்லது ஏனைய ஊடகங்கள் வழியே, நற்செய்தியின் பறைசாற்றல், இல்லங்களில் நிகழ்ந்திருக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு. இந்த வாய்ப்புக்களை நாம் எவ்வாறு பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளோம் என்பதை சிந்திப்பது நல்லது. இனிவரும் நாள்களில், தொடர்ந்து, நம் இல்லங்களை ஆலயங்களாக மாற்றவும், நம் குடும்பங்களில் நற்செய்தியின் பறைசாற்றலும், சீடர்களின் உருவாக்கமும் நடைபெறவும், இறைவன் நம்மை வழிநடத்தவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

இல்லங்களில், விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழாவை இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடும் வேளையில், இயேசு நம் இல்லங்களைத் தேடிவருவதாகவும், உலகெங்கும் சென்று சீடர்களை உருவாக்குதல், நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுதல் என்பவை, பிரம்மாண்டமான பணிகள் என்றாலும், அவை நம் இல்லங்களில், அடக்கமாக, அமைதியாக துவங்கவேண்டும் என்ற அன்புக்கட்டளைகளை அவர் வழங்குவதாகவும் கற்பனை செய்வது பயனளிக்கும்.

அத்துடன், இச்செய்தியில் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள கூறியுள்ள கருத்துக்கள், கொரோனா தொற்றுக்கிருமியால் உருவாகியுள்ள நெருக்கடி நேரத்தில் நாம் சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய உண்மைகளாகத் தெரிகின்றன. 'கதை சொல்லுதல்' என்ற மையக்கருத்தையொட்டி, திருத்தந்தை வெளியிட்டுள்ள இச்செய்தியின் ஒரு சில கூற்றுகள் இதோ:

"இவ்வாண்டின் செய்தியை 'கதை சொல்லுதல்' என்ற பொருளுக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்க விரும்புகிறேன். உண்மைகள் அடங்கிய நல்ல கதைகளை நாம் உருவாக்கவேண்டும். கட்டியெழுப்பும் கதைகள் வேண்டும், சீரழிக்கும் கதைகள் அல்ல. நம்மைச் சுற்றி ஓலமிடும் பல்வேறு குரல்கள் நடுவே, மனிதத்தின் அழகை வெளிப்படுத்தும் கதைகள் வேண்டும்."

"உயர்தர தொழில் நுட்பங்களின் உதவியுடன் இன்று பொய்மை கட்டுக்கடங்காமல் வளர்ந்துள்ளது. இந்தப் பொய்மையை நிராகரிக்கும் துணிவு நமக்குத் தேவை. உண்மையான, அழகான, நன்மை தரும் கதைகளை உருவாக்கவும், வரவேற்கவும் நமக்கு ஞானம் தேவை. ஒவ்வொருநாளும் வெளிப்படும் நமது அடிப்படை நன்மைத்தனத்தைக் கூறும் கதைகளைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் பொறுமையும், பகுத்தறிதலும் நமக்குத் தேவை."

கொரோனா தொற்றுக்கிருமியைப்பற்றி வெளிவந்த, இன்னும் வெளிவந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் விவரங்களில் பெரும்பாலானவை, நம் நம்பிக்கையைக் குலைத்துள்ளன. இவற்றின் நடுவே, ஆங்காங்கே, மனிதத்தை உயர்த்திப்பிடிக்கும் கதைகளும் பேசப்படுகின்றன.

இயேசுவின் விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழாவையும், 54வது உலக சமூகத் தொடர்பு நாளையும் கொண்டாடும் இந்நாளில், "உலகெங்கும் சென்று படைப்பிற்கெல்லாம் நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுங்கள்" (மாற்கு 16:15) என்று இயேசு வழங்கிய அன்புக் கட்டளையை ஏற்று, தங்கள் வாழ்வின் வழியே நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றிவருவோரை எண்ணி, இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி கூறுவோம். கொரோனா தொற்றுக்கிருமியின் கோரப்பிடியிலிருந்து மக்களை, குறிப்பாக, வறியோரை காக்க போராடிவரும் அன்புள்ளங்கள் அனைவருக்காகவும், இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம்.

நல்ல, நம்பிக்கை தரும் செய்திகளின் பறைசாற்றலும், சீடர்களின் உருவாக்கமும் நம் குடும்பங்களிலிருந்து, நம் தினசரி வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து துவங்கவேண்டும் என்று உருக்கமாக மன்றாடுவோம்.
