Mid January is a great season of Festivities in India, especially in Tamil Nadu. It is the season of the Harvest Festival – Pongal. With the advent of the Tamil month, ‘Thai’, all auspicious things would happen, says a Tamil proverb. We hope and pray that this harvest festival and the dawn of the month ‘Thai’ (also celebrated as the Tamil New Year in some places), close at heels with the dawn of the New Year 2023, will be a year of auspicious events.

Pongal – the harvest festival – is an occasion to turn our attention to our sources, namely, the mother earth, sunshine and rain. It is also a time to thank our farmers and the cattle who labour hard in the fields to bring food to our tables. Unfortunately, the commercial and media worlds have made this festival, like most other festivals, a shopping festival. Instead of visiting the fields and greeting the framers, we are made to wander through shopping malls as well as sit at home watching special Pongal programmes on TV screens. In spite of the manipulations of the commercial world, we pray that Pongal is celebrated as a festival of thanksgiving for the harvest, the farmers and the cattle, as well as a festival of welcoming and sharing - traits that are the backbone of Tamil culture!

As we celebrate Pongal, the harvest festival, we reflect on the concept of ‘harvesting’. Harvesting – whether in the field or in our lives – depends on what we sow. Moreover, if more care is taken between sowing and harvesting, more benefits will be harvested. Sowing, nurturing, growing and harvesting are lovely images for life. Proper growth calls for proper self-knowledge and self-respect. Respect for one’s self breeds respect for others. All these thoughts are reflected in the three readings of this Sunday. Prophet Isaiah says: “I am honoured in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength.” (Is. 49: 5). St Paul says that we are ‘sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people’. (I Cor. 1: 2). The Gospel of John brings to focus two great persons who admired and respected one another – John the Baptist and Jesus.

We turn our attention to self-knowledge and self-respect first. Some years back, I received a lovely PowerPoint Presentation sent via email by one of my friends. ‘VALUE WHAT YOU HAVE’ was the title. Here is the text of that presentation:

The owner of a small business, a friend of the poet Olavo Bilac, (a Brazilian poet and journalist) met him on the street and asked him, “Mr Bilac, I need to sell my small farm house, the one you know so well. Could you please write an announcement for me for the paper?”

Bilac wrote: “For sale: A beautiful property, where birds sing at dawn in extensive woodland, bisected by the brilliant and sparkling waters of a large stream. The house is bathed by the rising sun. If offers tranquil shade in the evenings on the veranda.”

Some time later, the poet met his friend and asked whether he had sold the property, to which he replied: “I’ve changed my mind when I read what you had written. I realised the treasure that was mine.”

Sometimes we underestimate the good things we have, chasing after the mirages of false treasures. We often see people letting go of their children, their families, their spouses, their friends, their profession, their knowledge accumulated over many years, their good health, the good things of life. They throw out what God has given them so freely, things which were nourished with so much care and effort.

Look around and appreciate what you have: your home, your loved ones, friends on whom you can really count, the knowledge you have gained, your good heath… and all the beautiful things of life that are truly your most precious treasure…

The idea of failing to value what we have – especially all the hidden treasures in our lives, reminds me of another familiar story. In a small village lived a beggar who sat at a particular spot day after day to ask for alms. He would not move to any other place. It looked as if he owned that piece of land as his own. After a few years, the beggar died on the very spot where he was begging. The people of the village decided to bury him at the same spot. When they began to dig for his burial, they found a treasure trove buried under the very same spot where the beggar sat all those years, begging.

Of all the treasures we can possess, the most precious treasure is ourselves. This treasure may or may not be approved and appreciated by the world. But, the most important factor is that we are honoured in the eyes of the Lord. This is the core theme of the first reading today (Isaiah 49: 3, 5-6).

A person who respects himself/herself is capable of respecting others. This is illustrated in the Gospel. St John the Baptist was already a popular preacher. If he was suffering from lack of self-assurance and self-appreciation, he would have been longing constantly for the limelight and, hence, would have ignored Jesus walking towards him, considering him, a threat to his name and fame. But, the moment John saw Jesus, he knew that the one superior to him had arrived and he did not hesitate to acknowledge it (John 1: 29-34).

Jesus, on his part, showered on John one of the best compliments ever given to a human being – “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). We came across this passage just a few weeks back (III Sunday of Advent). Acknowledging another as superior to oneself should spring from one’s own self appreciation. Otherwise, it would be false humility and would sound hollow.

The way John the Baptist introduced Jesus to his disciples and others is a great title that has been a source of inspiration down the centuries. We read in today’s Gospel: The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Just a few verses ahead of this incident, we hear John telling the people: “I am not the Christ (Messiah)” (cf. John 1:19) Hence, the ‘next day’, when John saw Jesus approaching him, he could have easily pointed Him out to the people, who were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Messiah, and said: “Behold, the Messiah”. That would have been a perfect way of launching Jesus as the hero. But, instead, John declared: “Behold, the Lamb of God”. The figure of the Messiah (or Christ) has the notion of anointing, as well as a regal or priestly status. Instead of introducing Jesus as the anointed king or a high priest, John uses the figure of the Lamb.

In English, we use the expression – “the first impression is the best impression”. When a person is introduced, we take special care to present that person at his/her best, even if it is a bit exaggerated. John chooses to introduce Jesus as the Lamb. The Lamb is the symbol of sacrifice, bearer of sin, a dish to be shared as a meal, as well as a shield – as in the case of the Paschal night when the blood of the lamb protected the Israel. Between the titles – Messiah, Christ or Lamb, one can imagine that Jesus would have preferred the title - ‘Lamb’.

The present-day world with its penchant for advertising, is keen on giving exaggerated and artificial titles to leaders, actors and players, (especially in countries like India). Against such artificiality, we are asked to examine ourselves and see how we would like to be introduced and remembered in this world.

There have been and still are very many noble persons who would like to be remembered for what they stand for, rather than be remembered by cheap, popular, and false titles. One such noble soul is – Martin Luther King Junior. Two months before his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke to his congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta about his impending death in what would, oddly enough, become his own eulogy:

Every now and then I guess we all think realistically about that day when we will be victimized with what is life's final common denominator--that something we call death. We all think about it and every now and then I think about my own death and I think about my own funeral. And I don't think about it in a morbid sense. And every now and then I ask myself what it is that I would want said and I leave the word to you this morning. 

If any of you are around when I have to meet my day, I don't want a long funeral. And if you get somebody to deliver the eulogy, tell him not to talk too long… Tell him not to mention that I have a Nobel Peace Prize--that isn't important. Tell not to mention that I have 300 or 400 other awards--that's not important…

I'd like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I'd like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to love somebody.

I want you to say that day that I tried to be right and to walk with them. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try to feed the hungry. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try in my life to clothe the naked. I want you to say on that day that I did try in my life to visit those who were in prison. And I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity… I won't have any money to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that is all I want to say. At the request of his widow, these recorded words of Dr. King's last sermon were played at his funeral.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr., was born exactly 94 years back, on January 15, 1929. Every year, on the third Monday of January, people in the U.S. celebrate Martin Luther King Junior Day. Hence, tomorrow, January 16, we commemorate the Martin Luther King Junior Day.

Martin Luther King Jr., in his own way, was a lamb that tried to take away the sin of injustice and racial discrimination from the world. May our lives be inspired by Jesus, the true Lamb of God, as well as persons like Martin Luther King Jr., so that the sins of the world are wiped away and the world be filled with grace and peace.

பொதுக்காலம் 2ம் ஞாயிறு

 

தமிழகத்திலும், உலகின் பல நாடுகளிலும் வாழும் தமிழர்களாகிய நாம், பொங்கல் திருவிழாவைச் சிறப்பிக்கின்றோம். இறைவனின் கருணையால், இயற்கை வளமும், மனித உழைப்பும் இணைந்து, நமக்குக் கொடுத்த கொடைகளுக்கு நன்றிசொல்லும் அழகான அறுவடைத் திருநாள் இது.

இந்த அறுவடைத் திருநாளைக் கொண்டாட அடிப்படைக் காரணங்களாக அமைந்துள்ள நிலம், நீர், காற்று, வயல்வெளி, மாடு, மற்றும், இத்திருநாளின் உயிர்நாடியாக விளங்கும் விவசாயப் பெருமக்கள் ஆகியோரைக் காண, கிராமங்களையும், வயல்வெளிகளையும் நாடிச் செல்லவேண்டிய நாள்கள் இவை. இயற்கையோடு நம்மை மீண்டும் இணைக்க வேண்டிய இத்திருநாளை, ஒரு வியாபாரத் திருநாளாக மாற்றிவிட்டன, பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்கள். அவர்களுடன் கூட்டணி வைத்திருக்கும் ஊடகங்கள், குறிப்பாக, தொலைக்காட்சி நிறுவனங்கள், இந்த நாள்களில் பல்வேறு நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஒளிபரப்பி, நம்மை, தொலைக்காட்சி பெட்டியின் முன்பு கட்டிப்போட்டு வைத்துள்ளன. உண்மையான வயல்வெளிகளில் நடந்து, இயற்கையான காற்றை உள்வாங்கி, உள்ளத்திலும், உடலிலும், புத்துணர்ச்சி பெறுவதற்குப் பதில், ஊடகங்கள் காட்டும் வயல்வெளி காட்சிகளைக் கண்டு அறுவடைத் திருநாளை நம் வீட்டுக்குள்ளேயே கொண்டாடும் வழக்கத்திற்கு நாம் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளோம்.

வியாபார உலகமும், ஊடக உலகமும் இணைந்து, நம்மைச் சுற்றி விரித்திருக்கும் இந்த மாய வலையிலிருந்து விடுபட்டு, நம் அறுவடைத் திருநாளின் ஆணிவேர்களாய் விளங்கும் விவசாயப் பெருமக்களுக்காகவும், அவர்களுக்கு துணை நிற்கும், நிலம், நீர், விலங்குகள் ஆகியவற்றிற்காகவும் நன்றி கூறி, பொங்கல் திருநாளை கொண்டாட முயல்வோம். நம் மனங்களில், நன்றி உணர்வும், பகிரும் உணர்வும் பொங்குவதற்கு, இப்பொங்கல் திருநாளன்று இறைவன் நமக்குத் துணை செய்யவேண்டும்.

பொங்கல் விழாவின் முக்கியக் காரணம் அறுவடை. பொருள்செறிந்த அறுவடைத் திருநாளையொட்டி வரும் இஞ்ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு, அறுவடையைக் குறித்த சிந்தனைகளை நம்முன் வைக்கிறது. நல்ல நிலங்களில் வளரும் பயிர்களைப் போல, பாதுகாப்பானச் சூழல்களில் வளர்ந்து, நமக்கும், பிறருக்கும், பயன்தரும் கருவிகளாக நாம் மாறமுடியும் என்ற அழகான எண்ணங்களை, இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள், நம் உள்ளத்தில் விதைக்கின்றன.

நமக்கே உரித்தான அடையாளங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்வதைப்பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, வலைத்தளத்தில் வலம்வரும் ஓர் அழகியக் கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. ‘Value What You Have’ - அதாவது, ‘உன்னிடம் உள்ளதை மதித்து வாழ்வாயாக’ என்ற தலைப்புடன் வெளியான அச்சிறுகதை இதோ:

Olavo Bilac என்பவர், பிரேசில் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு கவிஞர், பத்திரிக்கையாளர். ஒரு நாள், அவரது நண்பர் அவரைத் தேடிவந்தார். தன்னுடைய சிறு பண்ணை வீட்டை தான் விற்க விரும்புவதாகக் கூறிய நண்பர், அதை விற்பதற்கு நல்லதொரு விளம்பரத்தை எழுதித் தரும்படி Bilac அவர்களிடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். Bilac அவர்கள் பின்வரும் விளம்பர வரிகளை எழுதினார்:

"ஓர் அழகிய பண்ணை வீடு விற்பனைக்கு வருகிறது. இங்கு பறவைகளின் கானம் அதிகாலை முதல் ஒலிக்கும். பண்ணையின் நடுவில் அழகிய, தெளிந்ததொரு நீரோடை செல்கிறது. காலை இளஞ்சூரியனின் ஒளியில் வீட்டின் முகப்பு தினமும் குளிக்கும். மாலையில் பண்ணையில் பரவும் நிழலும், அமைதியும் நிம்மதி தரும்." என்ற இவ்வரிகளை எழுதி நண்பரிடம் கொடுத்தார் Bilac.

ஒரு சில வாரங்கள் சென்று தன் நண்பரைச் சந்தித்த Bilac அவர்கள், "என்ன? அந்த பண்ணை வீட்டை விற்றுவிட்டாயா?" என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு நண்பர், "இல்லை நண்பா! நீ அந்தப் பண்ணை வீட்டைப்பற்றி எழுதிய விளம்பரத்தை வாசித்தபின், என் பண்ணை வீடு எவ்வளவு அழகானதென்பதை உணர்ந்துகொண்டேன். அதை நான் விற்கப் போவதில்லை." என்று புன்னகையுடன் பதில் சொன்னார்.

நம்மைப்பற்றி, நம்மிடம் உள்ளவற்றைப்பற்றி எவ்வளவு தூரம் நாம் அறிந்துள்ளோம்; நம்மை நாமே எவ்வளவு ஆழமாய் புரிந்துவைத்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதைப் பொருத்து, நமது நல் வாழ்வு, நல வாழ்வு அமையும். நம்மிடம் உள்ள உண்மையான கருவூலங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளாமல், தூரத்துக் கானல்நீரை துரத்துவதால், வாழ்வின் பெரும் பகுதியை, நாம் வீணாக்குகிறோம். நம் உண்மை அடையாளங்களுடன் வாழ்வதற்குப்பதில், அவரைப்போல், இவரைப்போல் என்று போலி முகமூடிகளை அணிந்து வாழ முயல்கிறோம். பல நேரங்களில், இந்தப் பொய்யான, மாயைகளைப் பெறுவதற்கு, நம்மிடம் உண்மையாய் இருப்பனவற்றை விலைபேசுகிறோம். நம் குடும்ப உறவுகள், தொழில், நண்பர்கள் என்று, நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள நல்லவற்றை இழந்துவிட்டு, பின்னர் வருந்துகிறோம்.

நாம் நாமாகவே வாழ்வதற்கு, நம்மைப்பற்றிய தெளிவு முதலில் நமக்கு வேண்டும். இந்தத் தெளிவு, நம்மைப்பற்றிய உண்மையான மதிப்பை நமக்குள் உருவாக்கும். வேறு யாரும் நம்மை மதிப்பதற்குமுன், நமது பார்வையில் நாம் மதிப்புப் பெறவேண்டும். நமது பார்வையில், இறைவன் பார்வையில், நாம் மதிப்பு பெற்றவர்கள் என்பதை, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் (எசாயா 49: 3, 5-6) நாம் சந்திக்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயாவைப் போல், நாமும், நெஞ்சுயர்த்திச் சொல்லவேண்டும்.

கருப்பையில் இருக்கும்போதே ஆண்டவர் என்னை அழைத்தார்: என் தாய் வயிற்றில் உருவாகும்போதே என் பெயர் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிட்டார். தம் கையின் நிழலால் என்னைப் பாதுகாத்தார்... ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் நான் மதிப்புப்பெற்றவன்; என் கடவுளே என் ஆற்றல்.

ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் பார்வையில் மதிப்புப் பெறும்போதுதான், அடுத்தவரையும் நம்மால் மதிக்கமுடியும். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் (யோவான் 1: 29-34) நாம் சந்திக்கும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இதற்கு நல்லதோர் எடுத்துக்காட்டு. தன்னைச் சுற்றிலும் எப்போதும் அலைமோதும் கூட்டத்தைக் கண்டு, யோவான், தான் என்ற அகந்தை கொண்டு, நிலை தடுமாறவில்லை. தன் உண்மையான நிலை, தன் மதிப்பு அனைத்தும் இறைவனின் வழியை ஏற்பாடு செய்வதில்மட்டுமே அடங்கியுள்ளது என்று, தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவு யோவானுக்கு இருந்தது. தான் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த வழிக்கு உரிமையாளர் வந்துவிட்டார் என்பதை உணர்ந்ததும், மக்களின் கவனத்தை அந்த உரிமையாளர் பக்கம் திருப்பினார் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான். இதைத்தான் இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்குச் சொல்கிறது.

யோவான் நற்செய்தி 1: 29,34

இயேசு தம்மிடம் வருவதைக் கண்ட யோவான், “இதோ! கடவுளின் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி! ஆட்டுக்குட்டியாம் இவரே உலகின் பாவத்தைப் போக்குபவர். எனக்குப்பின் வரும் இவர் என்னைவிட முன்னிடம் பெற்றவர்... இவரே இறைமகன் எனச் சான்றும் கூறிவருகிறேன்.”

யோவான் நற்செய்தியின் முதல் பிரிவில் பல அறிமுகங்கள் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. இந்த நற்செய்தியின் ஆரம்பமே ஓர் இறையியல் அறிக்கையாக அமைந்துள்ளது. அந்த அறிக்கையில், இயேசு, இறைவனுடன் வாழ்ந்த வாக்கு என்றும், அந்த வாக்கு மனிதரானார் என்றும், நற்செய்தியாளர் யோவான் அறிமுகம் செய்து வைக்கிறார் (காண்க. யோவான் 1: 1-18). இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் அறிமுகம் இடம்பெறுகிறது. அவர், தான் மெசியாவோ, எலியாவோ, இறைவாக்கினாரோ அல்ல, தான் பாலைநிலத்தில் ஒலிக்கும் குரல் என்று தன்னையே அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார் (காண்க.  யோவான் 1: 19-28).

மறுநாள், அதாவது, தான் யார் என்று மக்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துகொண்ட மறுநாள் இயேசு தம்மிடம் வருவதைக் கண்ட யோவான், "இதோ! கடவுளின் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி!..." என்றார்  (யோவான் 1:29). இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இவ்வாறு ஆரம்பமாகிறது. "நான் மெசியா அல்ல" (யோவான் 1:19) என்று முந்தின நாள் திட்டவட்டமாகக் கூறிய திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், மறுநாள், இயேசுவைக் கண்டதும், 'இதோ மெசியா' என்று அவரை, மக்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்திருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அதற்கு மாறாக, "இதோ! கடவுளின் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி!" (யோவான் 1:29) என்று அவரை அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கிறார்.

'மெசியா' என்ற சொல்லின் முதல் பொருள், 'அர்ச்சிக்கப்பட்டவர்' என்றாலும், அந்த அர்ச்சிப்பின் விளைவாக, அவர் ஓர் அரசராக, தலைமைகுருவாக மாறும் நிலையும் அச்சொல்லுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, ஆட்சி, அதிகாரம் என்ற எண்ணங்களுடன் தொடர்புள்ள 'மெசியா' என்ற சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்தாமல், 'ஆட்டுக்குட்டி' என்ற சொல்லின் வழியே, இயேசுவின் பணிவாழ்வை அறிமுகப்படுத்துகின்றனர், திருமுழுக்கு யோவானும், நற்செய்தியாளர் யோவானும்.

ஒருவரை முதல் முறையாகச் சந்திக்கும்வேளையில், அல்லது, அவர் நமக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கப்படும் வேளையில், அவரைப்பற்றி நம் மனதில் பதியும் உருவம், எண்ணம் ஆகியவை ஆழமானதாக, நீண்டகாலம் நீடிப்பதாக அமையும் என்பதைக் கூற, ஆங்கிலத்தில், "First impression is the best impression" என்ற கூற்று பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. இதை மனதில் கொண்டே, ஒருவர் அறிமுகமாகும் வேளையில், அவரைப்பற்றி சொல்லப்படும் கருத்துக்களில் அதிக கவனம் செலுத்தப்படும்.

'ஆட்டுக்குட்டி' என்ற சொல்லில், பலியாகுதல், பாவங்களைச் சுமத்தல், விருந்தில் உணவாகுதல் போன்ற எண்ணங்கள் வெளிப்படுகின்றன. கூடுதலாக, பாஸ்கா இரவன்று, ஆட்டுக்குட்டியின் இரத்தம், கதவு நிலைகளில் பூசப்பட்டதால், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் அழிவிலிருந்து காக்கப்பட்டனர். எனவே, 'ஆட்டுக்குட்டி', மக்களின் கவசமாகவும் அமைந்தது. பலியாதல், பழிதீர்த்தல், உணவாதல், உயிர்களைக் காத்தல் என்ற அனைத்து அர்த்தங்களும் இயேசுவுக்கு அற்புதமாகப் பொருந்தியிருந்ததால், அவரை, திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், "கடவுளின் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி" என்று அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார்.

தன்னைவிட வேறொருவர் அதிக மதிப்புடையவர் என்று சொல்ல, ஒருவருக்கு, தன்னம்பிக்கையும், தன்னைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவும் தேவை. இத்தகையத் தெளிவும், நம்பிக்கையும் இல்லாமல், பிறரை உயர்த்திப் பேசும்போது, அதில் ஒரு போலியான தாழ்ச்சி தெரியும். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இயேசுவைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி, புகழுரைகள் சொன்னார். இயேசுவும், திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைக் குறித்து மிகச்சிறந்த புகழுரை வழங்கியுள்ளார் என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம். மனிதராய்ப் பிறந்தவர்களுள் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைவிடப் பெரியவர் எவரும் தோன்றியதில்லை. (மத்தேயு நற்செய்தி 11: 11) என்று இயேசு கூறினார். இயேசுவும், யோவானும், ஒருவரையொருவர் புகழ்ந்துகொண்டது, வெறும் முகத்துதி அல்ல. இருவரும் தங்களை உள்ளூர உயர்வாக மதித்தவர்கள், எனவே அவர்களால் அடுத்தவரின் உயர்வையும் மனதார உணரமுடிந்தது. வாயாரப் புகழமுடிந்தது.
