‘What About Bob?’ is a comedy film that depicts the main character Bob Wiley suffering from many phobias. He is shown as suffering from agoraphobia –the fear of any public place, especially where crowds gather. Bob is also shown as suffering from nosophobia which is the irrational fear of contracting a disease, accompanied by germaphobia (also sometimes spelled germophobia) the fear of germs.

Those of us who have seen the movie ‘What About Bob?’ would have laughed at the character of Bob. But, laughter aside, on a deeper analysis, we need to accept that each of us do carry phobias – big or small, simple or complicated, few or many. Ever since the dawn of 2020 and ever since the terms Corona and COVID occupied our minds and hearts, most of us have suffered from agoraphobia, nosophobia and germaphobia in varying degrees.

The opening lines of today’s first reading (Jeremiah 20:10-13) from the Prophet Jeremiah seem to echo our feelings: Jeremiah said: I hear the whisperings of many: ‘Terror on every side!’. As an antidote, the Gospel passage begins with the reassuring message of Jesus: “Do not fear…” (Mt. 10:26). When we hear words like terror and fear, we are reminded of the ambience of violence that has become part and parcel of our lives today.

At this moment, our memories are haunted by the violence that is unleashed in Manipur since May 3, resulting in death, injury and displacement of innocent people. We are also aware of the tragedy in Uganda where the authorities recovered the bodies of 41 people, including 38 students, who were burned, shot or hacked to death after suspected rebels, with ties to Islamic State, attacked a secondary school near the border with Congo on June 16.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have heard of the war that raged in Syria and the attacks carried out by terrorist groups. As the world was limping back to normalcy, after the pandemic, Ukraine was invaded by the Russian army. When violence erupts, both the government as well as the opposing groups exploit the situation for personal gains. From the violence of war, arms manufacturers profit. From the violence of terrorism, once again, arms manufacturers profit. Hence, ultimately, violence is a profitable market for arms trade!

The terrorists, instead of confronting the powerful groups, target the powerless, innocent common folks. Market places, buses, trains, schools and hospitals are the easy targets of their terror attacks. Places of worship are very often targeted by these groups. When these attacks are carried out in the name of religion, it leaves us with lots of painful questions. The suicide bomb attacks in Colombo, Sri Lanka, during Easter Sunday services on 21, April 2019, have left us with more questions than answers. Most of those questions are still unanswered!

When we are subjected to violence because of our faith, when our places of worship become places of massacre, our faith is shaken. At such challenging moments, the words of Christ ring true.

The passage chosen for our Gospel today, (Matthew 10: 26-33) is part of a discourse given by Jesus to his newly chosen Apostles. At the beginning of chapter 10, Matthew describes Jesus choosing the twelve Apostles. While sending them on a mission, Jesus gives them instructions. He tells them clearly that the world they are about to face, would be tough. “I am sending you as sheep among wolves” (Mt. 10:16) says Jesus. What is worse… that some of those ‘wolves’ would be one’s own family members! (Mt. 10: 21-22)

To face this tough world, the disciples are not asked to get trained in martial arts, nor are they asked to carry weapons. In fact, Jesus tells them: “Take no gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff” (Mt. 10:9-10). The only ‘shield’ they can take with them is, Faith - faith in the Father who does not ‘let one of the sparrows fall to the ground’.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Mt. 10:29-31) These lines of Jesus sound beautiful and consoling when we are seated in meditation, but to hold on to such faith in everyday life, is a great challenge. Prior to this, Jesus gives his Apostles another challenge: “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mt. 10:28). These words of Jesus have energized not only the Apostles, but countless noble men and women to face death with undaunted faith.

On February 7, 1945, the Communist soldiers arrived at the Franciscan Monastery in Široki Brijeg (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and said, “God is dead, there is no God”. The communists asked the Fransiscan monks to remove their habits. They refused. One angry soldier took the Crucifix and threw it on the floor. He said, “you can now choose either life or death.” Each of the Franciscans knelt down, embraced the Crucifix and said, “You are my God and my All.” The thirty Franciscans were taken out and slaughtered and their bodies burned in a nearby cave where their remains lay for many years. For these martyrs, the process of beatification and canonization has begun. Many of them have not only saved themselves for eternal life, but also have helped their assassins to ‘save themselves’. Fr Tommy Lane talks of one such incident that took place in the Franciscan Monastery in Široki Brijeg: One of the soldiers in the firing squad at Široki Brijeg later said, “Since I was a child, in my family, I had always heard from my mother that God exists. To the contrary, Stalin, Lenin, Tito had always asserted and taught each one of us: there is no God. God does not exist! But when I stood in front of the martyrs of Široki Brijeg and I saw how those friars faced death, praying and blessing their persecutors, asking God to forgive the faults of their executioners, it was then that I recalled to my mind the words of my mother and I thought that my mother was right: God exists!” That soldier converted and now he has a son, a priest and a daughter, a nun. Witnessing to Jesus and following God’s way also helps others in the crowd who are lacking the courage to follow Jesus.

Laying down one’s life for the faith is not a chance given to all of us; but, living our faith is a call given to each one of us. This call is not an easy one. This call, most often, makes us stand alone, away from the crowd. It is easier to go with the crowd, even when it goes against our convictions.

Let me close with the words of Fr Tommy Lane on this Sunday’s readings: Instead of following the crowd, the invitation to us in the Scripture readings this weekend is to be strong and stand up for Jesus and for what is right even if it is unpopular. Our happiness will not come from following the crowd because the crowd is not happy. Our happiness will come from following God’s ways. Even if they think you are out of touch, odd, or old-fashioned because you go to Mass, because you respect marriage as a sacrament and you follow God’s way, hold your head high. Remember on the last day they will not judge you, God will, and God will also judge them.

Jeremiah, as we heard in our first reading suffered dreadful persecutions because he would not give in to following the crowd, but he was fully aware of the presence of God with him. He said, “the Lord is at my side, a mighty hero.” (Jer 10:11) Remember the words of Jesus, “If anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in the presence of my Father in heaven.”

May God give us the grace to foster our faith so that we may face our fears squarely!

A final thought on Monday, June 26 – The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

It is appropriate that these words of Jesus have come to us on the eve of June 26 – The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Jesus reminds us that there are ways in which one can kill the body alone and ways in which one can kill both body and soul. We know that ‘torture’ has been used and, still is used as a means to break down a person not only physically but, much more, psychologically. The message from the United Nations for this International Day begins with these words: Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being. Despite the absolute prohibition of torture under international law, torture persists in all regions of the world. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said: “Torturers must never be allowed to get away with their crimes, and systems that enable torture should be dismantled or transformed.”

Pope Francis has published his prayer intention for the month of June inviting us to pray ‘for the abolition of torture’: We pray that the international community may commit in a concrete way to ensuring the abolition of torture and guarantee support to victims and their families.

Let us unite ourselves with the Holy Father and the international community in prayerful support for the victims of torture.

பொதுக்காலம் 12ம் ஞாயிறு

"கவிதை பயம் எனக்கு, கவி பயம் எனக்கு, காடு பயம் எனக்கு, நாடு பயம் எனக்கு, அழுக்கு பயம், குளிக்க பயம்... எல்லாமே பயமயம்" என்று, தமிழ் திரைப்படம் ஒன்றில், மனநலமருத்துவரிடம் தன் பிரச்சனையைக் கூறுவார், அந்தக் கதையின் நாயகன். வாழ்க்கையில் பார்க்குமிடத்திலெல்லாம் பயங்களை மட்டுமே சந்திக்கும் மனிதர் அவர். அந்தக் கதை நாயகனை வதைத்த ‘எல்லாமே பயமயம்’ என்ற பிரச்சனை, கடந்த இரு ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக நம்மையும் சுற்றிவரும் பிரச்சனைதானே?

2020ம் ஆண்டு புலர்ந்ததிலிருந்து, நம் எண்ணங்களை அதிகம் ஆட்கொண்ட ஓர் உணர்வு, பயம். கொரோனா, கோவிட் 19, கொள்ளைநோய் என்ற சொற்களை மீண்டும், மீண்டும் கேட்டுவந்துள்ள நாம், இன்றும், அந்தக் கொடூரத்திலிருந்து விடுபட வழியில்லாமல் தவித்துவருகிறோம்.

இத்தருணத்தில், இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாட்டில், நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள இறைவாக்கு, நம் அச்சங்களை நீக்குவதற்குப் பதில், அவற்றை கூட்டுவது போன்று ஒலிக்கிறது. "'சுற்றிலும் ஒரே திகில்' என்று பலரும் பேசிக்கொள்கிறார்கள்" (எரேமியா 20:10) என்று இறைவாக்கினர் எரேமியா, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தைத் துவக்குகிறார். "உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டாம்" (மத்தேயு 10:26) என்று, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், இயேசு, அறிவுரை வழங்குகிறார். திகில், கொலை, அச்சம் என்று கூறும் இந்த வாசங்களைக் கேட்கும்போது, வன்முறையே நம் வாழ்வின் அடித்தளமாகிவிட்டதோ என்ற கலக்கம் உண்டாகிறது.

கடந்த மாதம் 3ம் தேதி முதல் மணிப்பூர் மாநிலத்தில் நடைபெறும் கலவரங்களை நாம் அறிவோம். இத்தகைய வன்முறைகள் வெடிக்கும்போது, அவற்றில் சிக்கி உயிர்விடுவது பெரும்பாலும் அப்பாவி மக்களே. அந்த உண்மை மணிப்பூரிலும் நிகழ்ந்து வருகிறது. இஸ்லாமிய அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுவுடன் தொடர்புள்ள ஓர் இயக்கம், உகாண்டா நாட்டில் ஜூன் 16ம் தேதி பள்ளியொன்றில் நடத்திய தாக்குதலால் அங்கிருந்த 38 மாணவர்கள் உட்பட 41 பேர் கொல்லப்பட்ட நிகழ்வு, நம் நினைவுகளில் இன்னும் வேதனையை உருவாக்குகின்றது.

கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்று இலட்சக்கணக்கான உயிர்களை பலி வாங்கிய வேளையிலும், சிரியா போன்ற நாடுகளில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக தொடர்ந்துவரும் உள்நாட்டு வன்முறைகளில் அப்பாவி உயிர்கள் பலியாவது குறையவில்லை. இந்த பெருந்தொற்றிலிருந்து மனித சமுதாயம் மீண்டுவர முயன்றுகொண்டிருந்த வேளையில், மதியற்ற இரஷ்ய அரசுத்தலைவனின் ஆணவ வெறியால், உக்ரைன் நாட்டின் மீது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட தாக்குதல்கள், கடந்த ஆண்டு பிப்ரவரி மாதம் துவங்கி, 16 மாதங்களாகத் தொடர்ந்து வருகின்றன.

வன்முறைகள் வெடிக்கும்போது, அவற்றை, தங்களுக்கு ஆதாயமாகப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் குழுக்கள், அரசுதரப்பிலும், எதிர் தரப்பிலும் உள்ளன. வன்முறையை தங்கள் வாழ்வின் அடித்தளமாகக் கொண்டு செயல்படும் தீவிரவாதக் குழுக்கள், கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்று காலத்திலும், தங்கள் தாக்குதல்களை ஆங்காங்கே மேற்கொண்டனர் என்பதை செய்திகள் கூறுகின்றன.

வன்முறைகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுவினர், தங்கள் கொள்கைகளுக்கு எதிராக இருக்கும் அரசு அதிகாரிகளையோ, அரசியல்வாதிகளையோ நேரடியாகத் தாக்குவதற்குப் பதில், அப்பாவிப் பொதுமக்களைத் தாக்கும் மதியற்ற போக்கு, கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகளாகப் பெருகியுள்ளது. மக்கள் கூடும் கடைவீதிகள், பயணிக்கும் பேருந்துகள், இரயில் பேட்டிகள், மருத்துவமனைகள், பள்ளிகள் என்று... அனைத்து தலங்களிலும், வெறித்தனமான வன்முறைத் தாக்குதல்கள் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளன. இந்தத் தாக்குதல்களுக்கு, பல நேரங்களில், வழிபாட்டுத் தலங்களும் இலக்காகியுள்ளன. அவை, கடவுளின் பெயரால், மதத்தின் பெயரால் நிகழ்ந்ததாகவும் ஒரு சில குழுக்கள் அறிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளன. மதத்தின் பெயரால் வன்முறைகள் நிகழம்போது, நம் உள்ளங்களில், வேதனையான கேள்விகள் எழுகின்றன. 2019ம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதம், உயிர்ப்புப் பெருவிழாவன்று, இலங்கையில், ஆலயங்களில் நிகழ்ந்த தற்கொலை வெடிகுண்டு தாக்குதல்கள், நான்கு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னரும், கூடுதலான கேள்விகளை எழுப்பி வருகின்றனவே தவிர, விடைகளை வழங்கவில்லை.

மதநம்பிக்கை காரணமாக, நாம் வன்முறைகளுக்கு உள்ளாகும்போது, என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்பதை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு சொல்லித்தருகிறார். நாம் இன்று வாசிக்கும் நற்செய்தி பகுதி, மத்தேயு நற்செய்தி 10ம் பிரிவிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இப்பிரிவின் துவக்கத்தில், இயேசு, தன் திருத்தூதர்கள் பன்னிருவரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து (மத். 10:1-4), அவர்களை, பணியாற்ற அனுப்புகிறார். அவ்வேளையில், இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கிய அறிவுரைகள், இப்பிரிவில் தொகுத்து வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

பணியாற்றச் செல்லும் சீடர்கள், எவ்வகை உலகைச் சந்திக்கவுள்ளனர் என்பதை, இயேசு, ஒளிவு மறைவின்றி வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறுகின்றார். "இதோ! ஓநாய்களிடையே ஆடுகளை அனுப்புவதைப்போல நான் உங்களை அனுப்புகிறேன்" (மத். 10:16) என்ற கலப்படமற்ற உண்மையைக் கூறும் இயேசு, தன் சீடர்களைச் சூழும் ஓநாய்களில் சில, அவர்களது சொந்தக் குடும்பத்தினராகவே இருப்பர் (காண்க. மத். 10:21-22) என்றும் எச்சரிக்கிறார். அவர்கள் செல்லுமிடங்களிலெல்லாம் வெறுப்பும், துன்பமும் அவர்களைத் துரத்தும் (மத். 10:23) என்பதையும் வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறும் இயேசு, அவற்றைக் கண்டு தன் சீடர்கள் அஞ்சவேண்டாம் என்று சொல்கிறார். இதுவே, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் ஆரம்ப வரிகளாக அமைகின்றன. 

திருத்தூதர்களாக இயேசு தேர்ந்தெடுத்தவர்கள் யாரும் வீரப்பரம்பரையில் பிறந்தவர்கள் அல்ல; போர் பயிற்சி பெற்றவர்கள் அல்ல. எனவே, அவர்கள் ஆயுதங்களை ஏந்தி தங்கள் பயணத்தைத் துவக்கவில்லை. இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால், பொன், வெள்ளி, செப்புக் காசுகளை எடுத்துச் செல்லவேண்டாம்; மிதியடிகளோ, கைத்தடியோ வேண்டாம் (மத். 10: 9-10) என்பதை, இயேசு, தன் சீடர்களுக்கு முதல் அறிவுரையாக வழங்கியுள்ளார்.

சீடர்கள் சந்திக்கப்போகும் வன்முறைகளுக்கு எதிராக, இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கும் பாதுகாப்பு கேடயம், இறைவன் மீது அவர்கள் கொள்ளவேண்டிய நம்பிக்கை ஒன்றே.

'காசுக்கு இரண்டு' என்ற கணக்கில் விற்கப்படும் சிட்டுக்குருவிகள் தரையில் விழாதவாறு பராமரிக்கும் விண்ணகத்தந்தை, அவர்களையும் பாதுகாப்பார் என்ற நம்பிக்கை, தன் சீடர்களை வழிநடத்தவேண்டும் என்று இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறுகிறார் (மத். 10:29). நம்பிக்கைக்கு இலக்கணமாகச் சொல்லப்படும் இப்புகழ்மிக்க சொற்கள், தியானம் செய்வதற்கு உகந்த சொற்களாகத் தெரிகின்றன. ஆனால், நடைமுறை வாழ்வில் இத்தகைய நம்பிக்கையைக் கொண்டிருப்பது, இயலாத சவாலாக ஒலிக்கிறது.

நம்ப முடியாததாகத் தோன்றும் இந்தச் சவால், 20 நூற்றாண்டுகளாக, கோடான கோடி உன்னத உள்ளங்களை உறுதிப்படுத்தியுள்ளது. "ஆன்மாவைக் கொல்ல இயலாமல், உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டாம். ஆன்மாவையும் உடலையும் நரகத்தில் அழிக்க வல்லவருக்கே அஞ்சுங்கள்" (மத். 10:28) என்று இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறிய சொற்கள், கோடான கோடி கிறிஸ்தவர்களை, மரணம் வரை துணிவுகொள்ளச் செய்துள்ளது.

2008ம் ஆண்டு, ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 25ம் தேதி முதல் 28ம் தேதி முடிய, இந்தியாவின் ஒடிஸ்ஸா மாநிலத்தில், கந்தமால் பகுதியில், கிறிஸ்தவர்களுக்கு எதிராக, இந்து அடிப்படைவாதிகள் மேற்கொண்ட வன்முறையில், 45 கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டனர்.

1996ம் ஆண்டு, மார்ச் 27ம் தேதி, அல்ஜீரியா நாட்டில், சிஸ்டெர்சியன் (அல்லது, 'Trappist') துறவு சபையைச் சேர்ந்த ஏழுபேரை, இஸ்லாமியத் தீவிரவாதிகள் கடத்திச் சென்றனர். மே 31ம் தேதி, அத்துறவிகளின் துண்டிக்கப்பட்ட தலைகள் மட்டும் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டன.

1945ம் ஆண்டு, பிப்ரவரி 7ம் தேதி, போஸ்னியா-ஹேர்செகொவினா நாட்டின், ஷிரோக்கி ப்ரியேக் (Široki Brijeg) என்ற ஊரில், பிரான்சிஸ்கன் துறவு மடத்தில், கம்யூனிச படையினர் நுழைந்தனர். "கடவுள் இறந்துவிட்டார்..." என்று கத்தியபடி, அவர்கள், அத்துறவிகள் அணிந்திருந்த சிலுவைகளைப் பறித்து, கீழே எறிந்தனர். துறவிகளோ, சிலுவைகளை மீண்டும் எடுத்து, அவற்றை, தங்கள் மார்போடு இறுகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டனர். அந்த 30 துறவிகளும், மடத்திலிருந்து இழுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டு, கொல்லப்பட்டனர். அவர்களது உடல்கள் அனைத்தும் தீயிட்டுக் கொளுத்தப்பட்டன.

நாம் இப்போது நினைவுகூர்ந்த இந்த மறைசாட்சிய மரணங்கள் அனைத்தும், 20, மற்றும் 21ம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் நிகழ்ந்தவை. கடந்த 20 நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக, கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் வேட்டையாடப்பட்டு வருகின்றனர் என்பது, வரலாற்று உண்மை. 20ம் நூற்றாண்டில் தங்கள் மத நம்பிக்கைக்காக உயிரிழந்தவர்களில், கிறிஸ்தவர்களே மிக அதிகம் என்ற விவரம், உலகறிந்த செய்தி. இத்தனை நூற்றாண்டுகளாய், வன்முறைகளையும் மரணத்தையும், மன உறுதியுடன் எதிர்கொண்ட, இன்றும் எதிர்கொண்டு வரும், நம் சகோதரர்கள், மற்றும், சகோதரிகள் காட்டிய துணிவுக்குமுன், தலை வணங்கி, நன்றி கூறுகிறோம்.

இந்தப் படுகொலைகள் அனைத்திலும் ஓர் உண்மை தெளிவாக ஒளிர்கின்றது. அதுதான், இறந்தவர் அனைவரும் காட்டிய உறுதி. தங்கள் உடலைக் கொல்பவர்களைக் குறித்து எந்த அச்சமும் இன்றி, தங்கள் உயிரைக் கையளித்ததால், தங்கள் ஆன்மாவை அவர்கள் முடிவில்லா வாழ்வில் இணைத்துக்கொண்டனர் என்பதை நாம் நம்புகிறோம்.

இவர்களில் பலரை அருளாளர்களாக, புனிதர்களாக அறிவிக்கும் வழிமுறைகள், ஆய்வு செய்யப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. துணிவுடன் மரணத்தைச் சந்தித்த இவர்கள், தங்கள் ஆன்மாவை மட்டுமல்ல, தங்களைக் கொலை செய்தோரின் ஆன்மாக்களையும் காப்பாற்றியுள்ளனர் என்பதை, பின்வரும் நிகழ்வு வெளிச்சமிட்டு காட்டுகிறது.

அத்துறவிகளைச் சுட்டுக் கொன்றவர்களில் ஒருவரான இவர், மீண்டும் கத்தோலிக்க மறையைத் தழுவினார். அவரது மகன், ஓர் அருள்பணியாளராகவும், மகள், ஓர் அருள் சகோதரியாகவும் இன்று பணியாற்றி வருகின்றனர். தங்கள் உடலைக் கொல்பவர்களைக் குறித்து பயம் ஏதுமின்றி, தங்கள் உயிரைக் கையளித்த பிரான்சிஸ்கன் துறவிகள், தங்கள் ஆன்மாவைப் புனிதமாகக் காத்துக்கொண்டனர். அதுமட்டுமல்ல, தங்களைக் கொலை செய்தவர்களில் ஒருவரின் ஆன்மாவையும் அவர்களது மரணம் காப்பாற்றியது.

கிறிஸ்துவின் சாட்சிகளாக இறக்கும் வாய்ப்பு நம் அனைவருக்கும் கிடைக்குமா என்பது நிச்சயமில்லை. ஆனால், கிறிஸ்துவின் சாட்சிகளாக வாழும் அழைப்பு, நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால், நம்மில் பலர் வாழும் கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு, 'இறைவன் இறந்துவிட்டார்' என்பதை, சொல்லாமல் சொல்லும் வாழ்வாக மாறி வருகிறது.

உலகத்தோடு சேர்ந்து, கூட்டத்தோடு சேர்ந்து, நம் தனிப்பட்டக் கொள்கைகளை துறந்து வாழ்வதை, இன்று 'பேஷன்' என்று சொல்லிக்கொள்கிறோம். நன்னெறி, நற்செய்தி இவற்றின் விழுமியங்களைப் பின்பற்றினால், 'பழமைவாதி' என்று முத்திரை குத்தப்படுவோமோ என்று பயந்து, கூட்டத்தோடு சேர்ந்துவிடுகிறோம். கிறிஸ்துவையும், நற்செய்தி கூறும் விழுமியங்களையும் பின்பற்றவோ, தேவைப்பட்டால், அனைவரும் அறியும்படி உயர்த்திப்பிடிக்கவோ நாம் அழைக்கப்படும்போது, முன்வருகிறோமா, அல்லது, பின்வாங்குகிறோமா என்பதை, இன்று ஆய்வுசெய்து பார்க்கலாம்.

மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவரை விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கும் என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வேன். மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை மறுதலிப்பவர் எவரையும் விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கிற என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் மறுதலிப்பேன்.

கிறிஸ்துவின் சாட்சிகளாக வாழ்வதற்கும், தேவைப்பட்டால், கிறிஸ்துவின் சாட்சிகளாக, நம் உயிரை வழங்குவதற்கும், இறைவன், நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் துணிவை வழங்குவாராக!

இறுதியாக ஓர் எண்ணம், ஒரு வேண்டுதல்... ஜூன் 26, இத்திங்களன்று, சித்ரவதைகளால் துன்புறுவோருக்கு உறுதுணை தரும் உலக நாள் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகின்றது. "ஆன்மாவைக் கொல்ல இயலாமல், உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டாம். ஆன்மாவையும் உடலையும் நரகத்தில் அழிக்க வல்லவருக்கே அஞ்சுங்கள்" (மத்தேயு 10:28) உடலை மட்டும் கொல்பவர்களை விட, உடலையும் ஆன்மாவையும் கொல்பவர்கள் அதிக ஆபத்தானவர்கள் என்று இயேசு கூறும் சொற்கள், சித்ரவதைகளின் கொடூரத்தைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்க நம்மைத் தூண்டுகின்றன. மனிதர்களின் உடலை மட்டுமல்லாமல், அவர்களை உளரீதியாக வதைத்து, அவர்களது மனித மாண்பைக் குலைத்து அவர்களை முற்றிலும் 'உடைப்பதற்கென்று' உருவாக்கப்பட்ட வழியே, சித்ரவதைகள். அரசுகளும், ஏனைய குற்றங்கள் புரியும் அமைப்புகளும் சித்ரவதைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தி மனிதர்களை நொறுக்குவதை நாம் அறிவோம். சித்ரவதைகளை ஒழிப்பதற்கு சட்டங்கள் இருந்தபோதும், அவை தொடர்ந்து நடைபெற்று வருவது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாத ஓர் அநீதி என்று, திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களும் ஐ.நா. தலைமைப் பொதுச்செயலர் அந்தோனியோ குட்டேரஸ் அவர்களும் கூறியுள்ளனர்.

திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் ஜூன் மாதத்திற்கென்று வெளியிட்டுள்ள செபக்கருத்தில் சித்ரவதைகளால் துன்புறுவோருக்கு  நம் இறைவேண்டுதல்கள் வழியே உறுதுணையாக இருக்க அழைப்பு விடுத்துள்ளார். "பன்னாட்டு சமுதாயம் சித்ரவதையை முற்றிலும் ஒழிக்கும் முயற்சிகளை உறுதி செய்யவும், சித்ரவதைகளால் துன்புறுவோருக்கும், அவர்கள் குடும்பத்தினருக்கும் துணை நிற்கவும் நாம் வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம்" என்று திருத்தந்தை விடுத்துள்ள இந்த அழைப்பில் நம்மையும் இணைத்து, இந்த கருத்துக்காக செபிப்போம்.
