Serving… not being served

Pope Benedict XVI reads a document in Latin as he announces his resignation.
(AP Photo/L’Osservatore Romano)

Last Monday was very special for Vatican, for Rome, for Italy and for the world… surely, at least for the Catholic world. Yes, on February 11th Pope Benedict XVI made history by announcing his decision to step down from his position as the Head of the Catholic Church (Bishop of Rome). This was indeed a historic moment, since no one living today, including the Pope himself, would have experienced anything like this. There are claims that such an event took place 600 years ago. Newspapers have reported that there have been four other instances of Popes’ resignation in the last 1000 years, each under different – very different – circumstances. I would like to focus on this important event for this Sunday’s reflection, since this gives us an opportunity to look at authority in general and, specially, at authority in the Catholic Church.
Let me begin with my reactions, since, I presume, that many of us would have had similar reactions. The moment I heard this news, around noon time on February 11th, my first reaction was surprise. Since I am old enough, I don’t wish to use the word ‘shock’ that easily. The first question was ‘Really?’ Then, naturally, the next question popped up… ‘Why?’… Why did the Holy Father decide to step down? The Holy Father had formally answered this question when he made the announcement before a group of Cardinals. In case, some of you have not seen the full text of the Pope’s statement, which he read out in Latin, here is the official English translation:

Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church.
After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.
I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.
However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.
For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects.
And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

The ‘Why’ question has been answered clearly by the Pope in terms of the challenges of today’s world and his own declining strength. He had also made it clear that this was not a decision taken at the spur of the moment, but done with deep reflection and prayer, knowing the enormity of the situation. I don’t think there could be a clearer answer than this. Being a scholar, the Pope had worded his statement quite adequately. Still…

Still… the question of ‘why’ is making its rounds – actually merry-go-rounds – around the media. The media is trying to probe into the mind and heart of the Pope to find out the ‘real’ reason. Not only that… the media was interested in alluding to ‘heavenly signs’ like the lightning that struck the dome of St Peter’s on February 11th.
Having taught media for a few years, I can say that for the media the statement made by the Pope was not ‘juicy’ enough for a ‘news-story’. Hence, they would go ahead with their own search for reasons for his resignation. They hope to find out something more exciting. Yes… that is their aim. To make this important event more dramatic. When I was thinking of the insatiable thirst of the media for drama, I was also painfully questioning myself whether it is the basic desire in all of us to see drama, especially in the life of others, which has encouraged the media to develop along these lines!
The first Sunday of Lent is centred around the theme of ‘temptation’. Can we, individually and collectively, control our temptations for rumours, stories, dramas especially when it involves others? That is a sure way to make the media more accountable and objective. Otherwise, the insatiable, primal desire of voyeurism will live on and the media would be the happier for it!

Once the phase of surprise and curiosity settled down, I began the process of understanding the present situation. I read some of the comments made by religious and political leaders. One of them caught my attention. It was the interview given by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, who was also the leader of the Anglican Church. He had stepped down from his leadership on December 31st, 2012. He has acknowledged that he had spoken about his decision with the Pope. Here is an excerpt from Archbishop Williams’ interview given in Vatican Radio:
“It wasn’t a total surprise, I think because in our last conversation I was very conscious that he was recognising his own frailty and it did cross my mind to wonder whether this was a step he might think about….. it does seem to me that an act like this does something to, as you might put it, demystify the papacy, the pope is not like a sort of God King who goes on to the very end. The ministry of service that the Bishop of Rome exercises is just that, a ministry of service and it’s therefore reasonable to ask if there is a moment when somebody else should take that baton in hand.”

When I read these comments of Archbishop Williams, I could sense a waft of fresh air in my mind about authority in the Catholic Church, and a clearer picture of the position of the Holy Father. The very idea that the Pope need not be for life, makes the position closer to the human realm. The other idea, namely, that this position is primarily a ministry rather than an authority brings the Roman Pontiff closer to the people. The decision of Pope Benedict XVI has thus made the position of the Head of the Church more fragile and, hence, more beautiful.
The Conclave of Cardinals which will take place in March will elect the new Pope. Who can be elected a Pope? Any one… Yes, any man can be elected a Pope. He need not be a Cardinal, a Bishop, not even a Priest. All that is needed would be… once elected, he would be consecrated Bishop. This, as we know is only a theoretical possibility. But, it still IS a possibility! Even such a thought or a discussion liberates one’s mind from the burden of traditions and rituals of the Catholic Church! We must be thankful to Pope Benedict XVI, who by his decision, has set in motion a process of thinking on authority after quite a few years! We are taking a mental pilgrimage to our sources!

The Gospel passage (Luke 4: 1-13) for the First Sunday of Lent presents Jesus struggling with the Satan over the question of power and authority. Satan is trying to tempt Jesus to take over the world through compromises short-cuts and spectacular show of power. All of us get tempted with power. The more absolute the power, the greater the danger of ‘playing god’…

Both the decision of Pope Benedict XVI as well as the Gospel today tell us that the power of the leader is in serving and not in being served!

Pope's resignation a 'bolt from the blue'

TEMPTATIONS… ALL AROUND US.

Every First Sunday in Lent is assigned to temptation. Assigned to? Well, devoted to temptation. Devoted to? Hmm… Whichever way you say this, it jars. Right? That is what temptation does to us. It makes us feel uncomfortable. Yet it is an essential part of human life. No one escapes temptation. Not even Jesus. Today’s Gospel talks about this. How do we see temptation and the tempter… call him / her satan, devil, the evil one, whatever?
Last year when I was discussing this topic with a friend of mine, the moment he saw the theme temptation, he broke into an old Tamil film song that talked of the hero being beset with problems. (Sothanai mel sothanai podhumadaa saami) Lord, enough of this wave after wave of temptations and tribulations, he cries! One can easily feel the sense of desperation that runs through that song.
For people who believe strongly in fate, temptations are seen as predestined plan to attack us for no reason at all. Temptations are like the flash floods that carry us alive. When we begin to imagine temptations in such a way, we seem to give undue power to temptations. We know that temptations are powerful. But, are we simply puppets in the hands of the tempter? To attribute so much power to temptations and the evil forces that manufacture these temptations leave us with lot of negativity in life.
The present generation suffers from what I would like to call ‘negative-syndrome’. Part of this ‘negative syndrome’ comes out of our media which revels in highlighting disasters, destruction, scandals and more tragedies. Why do the media indulge in these? Nothing sells like tragedy and disaster. That is why.
We know that the world is a mixed bag of the good and the bad. For every disaster that happens, there is always a blessing that happens too. In the recent earthquake that devastated Haiti, there were many distressing facts and figures. There were equally, if not more, uplifting events. The media was more interested in reporting the negatives more than the positives. Since we hear and see such negative news day after day, we tend to give up on the world very quickly. This is the most dangerous temptation our present generation faces! The temptation of believing that there are far too many evil forces around us and that we can do nothing about them.
We can surely learn a lesson or two… or perhaps, three from the three temptations that Jesus faced. Here is Luke’s account of the temptations of Jesus.

Luke 4:1-13 (New International Version - UK)
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'People do not live on bread alone.'"
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours."
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.' [c]"
The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. For it is written:
" 'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;
they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

The devil did not tempt Jesus with anything bad. All the suggestions were harmless, innocent, and attractive. This is the first lesson we learn from temptations… that almost all temptations are good and attractive! The devil, almost all the time, comes clothed in light. The second lesson? That temptations or the devil come at the most opportune moment. Jesus was hungry. He needed to eat something. Needs and wants are the seedbed for temptations… more in the case of wants than needs.
The devil tries to hook Jesus with a challenge… “If you are the Son of God…” I am reminded of how children goad one another into bravery or bravado. “Hey, if you are brave enough, climb this tree, do this or do that…” Such a challenge implies that if someone does not take up the challenge, he/she is a coward. The definition of bravery is in climbing the tree. Such bravado usually leaves our kids with a few bruises, or broken bones!
The devil tries to tell Jesus what it means to be a Son of God… Turn these stones into bread. What for? If the devil had at least suggested that Jesus could satisfy his hunger with the bread, there would be some meaning in turning stones into bread. But, both the gospel accounts of Luke and Matthew mention that the devil wanted the stones to be turned into bread. Period. This is simple magic, simple exhibition of power. The devil seems to say that such a magic would prove or establish Jesus as the Son of God. The devil was trying to give Jesus a job description of the Son of God. Jesus did not want to fit into this definition as prescribed by the devil. Jesus who did not want to use his power to satisfy his personal need of hunger, would use the same power later on to feed thousands. Power is not to be used to enhance one’s own needs and wants.

The second temptation was too good to be true. The devil was offering the whole world on a platter. After all, Jesus came as a human being just to win over the world. Now, it was offered on a platter. Of course, there were strings attached to this offer. Jesus needed to make compromises, a simple surrender to the devil. Jesus, who refused this offer, would later on surrender to God the Father while on the cross. Through that surrender, he would win the world. Compromises and the resultant corruption seem to have seeped into all the spheres of human life today. Compromise seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

The third temptation of Jesus would have thrilled any one of us living today. We live in an ‘instant’ world. We need quick results. Instead of spending 30 years of seclusion in Nazareth, 3 years of hard public life, 3 days of hunger and brutal treatment, and the final 3 hours of excruciating torture on the cross, all Jesus needed to do was to jump down from the pinnacle of the Jerusalem temple. The whole world would be at his feet. The moment he jumped, heavens would have opened; myriads of angels would have come to carry him down to the ground in one of the most spectacular special-effects-scene. The whole of Jerusalem, nay, the whole world would have witnessed who the Messiah was. One moment of brilliance, instant success. What else one could ask for? Thank God, Jesus was not an ‘instant’ person. He chose the 30+3+3+3 path!

'Tis one thing to be tempted, another thing to fall' (William Shakespeare). Jesus was tempted, but did not fall. The famous ‘Our Father’ has the petition: Lead us not into temptation. The translation of this petition in Tamil is closer to what Shakespeare is talking about. It says, “Do not make us fall in temptation.” ‘Being tempted’ happens to all of us; but ‘falling’ is our personal choice. Let us pray that the Lord gives us enough backbone to stand erect and not fall.

"Even the devil can quote the Bible" என்ற பழமொழி உண்டு. 'Tis one thing to be tempted, another thing to fall' (William Shakespeare)
