‘Creating a Livable Planet Earth’ "வாழத் தகுந்த பூமிக் கோளத்தை உருவாக்க..."

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Human family and the Indian community were honoured by the presence of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on planet earth. Hailing from a simple, humble family in Rameswaram – one of the southern cities in India – Abdul Kalam rose to the highest position an Indian can dream of… namely, the President of the largest democracy in the world. When a person is honoured with a position or with a citation, we tend to believe that that person gets honoured. But, there are a few persons in the world who have made a position or a citation more honourable by having their names attached to them. Dr Kalam made the position of the President of India more honourable. He also made the highest civilian honour of India, namely, ‘Bharat Ratna’, more honourable by being its recipient.
More than the positions held and honours received by Dr Kalam, he will be remembered, especially by the youth of India, as the architect (or sower) of noble dreams. Dr Kalam himself would prefer to be remembered as a ‘teacher’ more than by any other roles he had played in his life. Mr Srijan Pal Singh, who had been a close associate of Dr Kalam for many years, talks of his conversation with Dr Kalam:
Often he (Dr Kalam) would ask me, “You are young, decide what will you like to be remembered for?” I kept thinking of new impressive answers, till one day I gave up and resorted to tit-for-tat. I asked him back, “First you tell me, what will you like to be remembered for? President, Scientist, Writer, Missile man, India 2020, Target 3 billion…. What?” I thought I had made the question easier by giving options, but he sprang on me a surprise. “Teacher”, he said.

Dr Kalam passed away in the only way he would have loved to bid good-bye to his earthly life. Mr Singh also talks of this:
Then something he said two weeks back when we were discussing about his missile time friends. He said, “Children need to take care of their parents. It is sad that sometimes this is not happening”. He paused and said, “Two things. Elders must also do. Never leave wealth at your deathbed – that leaves a fighting family. Second, one is blessed if one can die working, standing tall without any long drawn ailing. Goodbyes should be short, really short”.
True to his wish, he passed away, standing at the podium, as he was addressing the students of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.

My admiration for Dr Abdul Kalam is tinged with a shadow – namely, his whole-hearted support to make India a nuclear force in the world. But, when I saw the topic of his final talk, namely, ‘Creating a Liveable Planet Earth’, I was hoping that Dr Kalam was negotiating a corner in his uni-directional nuclear journey. To confirm my hope, here are the words of Mr Singh:
The topic of lecture at IIM Shillong was ‘Creating a Livable Planet Earth’. He related the incident (the loss of innocent lives in an attack in Punjab) to the topic and said, “it seems that man made forces are as big a threat to the livability of earth as pollution”. We discussed on how, if this trend of violence, pollution and reckless human action continues, we will be forced to leave the earth. “Thirty years, at this rate, maybe”, he said. “You guys must do something about it… it is going to be your future world”.
I wish to believe that Dr Kalam was apprehensive of the unbridled power certain sections of the human family were wielding. That he should talk about ‘Creating a Livable Planet Earth’ at the fag end of July seemed very apt for me, since the beginning of August brings to mind how human beings can make this earth ‘totally unlivable’.

Every year, at the beginning of the month of August haunting memories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 6 and 9, 1945) flood our memory. The gory details of this human massacre are well-known. So, let us not go over those statistics. They can only feed our curiosity. Has Hiroshima and Nagasaki become only museum pieces to be visited once a year or, are they schools where we can learn a lesson or two?
I am afraid that even Japan is treating this tragedy as a ‘treasured museum piece’. Why do I say this? If Japan had treated Hiroshima and Nagasaki as schools, then Fukushima would not have happened. After Fukushima nuclear threat, Japan began to close down its atomic plants one by one. I was so happy about it that I announced this news in Vatican Radio with full gusto. Unfortunately, my happiness was short-lived. Japan has reopened its atomic power plants once again!
Sadly, Japan as well as the whole world are madly… MADLY… in love with nuclear energy still. On a day like this, we need to focus on our tragic romance with nuclear energy. The cenotaph at the Hiroshima Peace Park is inscribed with an ambiguous sentence: "Let all the souls here rest in peace; this mistake shall not be repeated." (Wikipedia) But from Hiroshima to Fukushima nuclear mistakes have been repeated – all over the world! This begins our reflections…

Why are mistakes repeated? There could be hundred of reasons. But, I wish to focus on two of them. The first is… when mistakes are covered up with falsehood and made to look like the right thing, they tend to be repeated. The mistake of the U.S. was well covered up. Delayed information, distorted information, downright lies accompanied the dropping of the atomic bombs. As I was going through many details of this historic tragedy, something struck me hard. When the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, it was 8.15 a.m. on August 6th. It was still night in most of the U.S. and the people there were asleep. One can see that this nation is still struggling to wake up from this sleep and find out the real truth. Here is a news item to illustrate this uneasiness:
New York: Pax Christi commemoration of Hiroshima & Nagasaki
Posted: Monday, July 30, 2012 9:41 pm
Pax Christi Metro New York is hosting 'Nuclear Lies, Nuclear Truths' a lecture, silent procession, prayers and discussion to mark the 67th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki this Sunday 5 August.
In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a few thoughtful Americans questioned the morality of the bombings. Alarmed by those questions, men such as Conant, Bundy, and Stimson went about creating an explanation of why atomic bombs were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That explanation has been widely accepted; however, the vast majority of historians who have studied the matter since then believe that the story told by men like Conant, Bundy, and
Stimson—and later by Truman—was profoundly misleading.

Dear friends, I have quoted from this news item to show that at least some conscientious persons are still trying to learn from history so that we don’t repeat it. I was also equally impressed with the stand of the Christians in the U.S. soon after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1946, a report by the Federal Council of Churches entitled Atomic Warfare and the Christian Faith, includes the following passage:
"As American Christians, we are deeply penitent for the irresponsible use already made of the atomic bomb. We are agreed that, whatever be one's judgment of the war in principle, the surprise bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are morally indefensible." (Wikipedia)
When the mistakes are not covered up in lies, we can surely learn from those mistakes, since truth will always set us free. But, unfortunately, every government in the world is dishing out lies as far as nuclear warheads are concerned.
As if the threat of nuclear warheads is not enough, every country is moving towards nuclear plants. On this front as well, lots of lies have been told about the safety of a nuclear plant and about the different accidents that have happened in nuclear plants. Hence, here is my simple (you may call this ‘simplistic’) conclusion: Nuclear energy can thrive in the seedbed of lies!
If you wish to read more truth, kindly read the news feature: HIROSHIMA, NAGASAKI BOMBINGS WERE AVOIDABLE by David Krieger, President, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. (IDN-InDepthNews – August 3, 2012)

Why are we so madly in love with nuclear energy? Is there no other alternative? I am not a scientist and hence my answer to this question cannot be scientific. But I am a believer. My belief says that our world can survive, in fact, flourish in safer environment if we depend on other natural sources of energy – wind, water, sunlight… My belief says that the universe is designed in such a way that it can sustain itself when we are able to tap the sources appropriately. The catch words are: tap and appropriately… Unfortunately, our present generation has not tapped natural sources of energy but has exploited them indiscriminately!
Our natural sources of energy can surely sustain the whole of humanity, provided we decide to satisfy our needs and not our desires… our unbridled desires of accumulation. Our mad passion for self above everything else has created more demands on our resources. Since nature could not satisfy our mad rush for more and MORE… we looked for artificial sources of energy. Look, where we have landed up… We have landed on a planet that is waiting to explode any time.

God the Father has a simple solution to offer in the first reading today: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not.” (Exodus 16: 4) Gather only what is needed for the day and not more. Only on the sixth day they were allowed to gather for two days. We see later in this chapter that there were people who did not obey this instruction and gathered more. These were the ancestors of some of the world leaders today who have accumulated mind boggling amount of wealth. Will they carry this beyond their graves?
And the people of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less... He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat. And Moses said to them, "Let no man leave any of it till the morning." But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. (Ex. 16: 17-21)

In the gospel today Jesus gives another simple solution to those who came seeking him ‘not because they saw signs, but because they ate their fill of the loaves’. Jesus could see that they were seeking a short cut to fulfil their desires. He too offers another solution in the very next line : “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal.” (John 6: 26-27)

The solutions given in both these readings sound extremely simple. We can give them a try. Otherwise, we need to build more temples (nuclear plants) to worship nuclear energy!

Atomic bomb mushroom clouds over Hiroshima (left) and Nagasaki (right)

“... One is blessed if one can die working, standing tall without any long drawn ailing. Goodbyes should be short, really short.”

Greed… far beyond Pluto

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

On July 14, and 15, NASA’s space probe, the ‘New Horizons’ flew close to the farthest planet in the solar system – Pluto. The ‘New Horizons’ began its mission in January, 2006. Travelling at the speed of 50,000 kmph, for the past nine years, it has ‘touched’ Pluto. The distance between the Earth and Pluto is around 6 billion kilometres (depending on the orbitrary positions of the Earth and Pluto). Traversing such an unthinkable distance at such an incredible speed, without colliding with other planets, thousands of satellites, and millions of asteroids… is a scientific wonder, indeed. We the ‘earthlings’ have made attempts to ‘shake hands’ with the most distant relatives of the solar family – Pluto and its moons!
It is significant that on the very same July 14 and 15, when the ‘New Horizons’ made this historic contact with our ‘distant relative’, Iran and some powerful nations arrived at a nuclear deal in Vienna! This news made the human family breathe a sigh of relief, at least for the time being. We are aware that this deal is not a guarantee for a nuclear-free, safe world.

Although the ‘New Horizons’ and the Iran deal happening at the same time was not pre-planned, it gives us an opportunity to put them together and see where we are heading. Our so called progress takes us far beyond unthinkable distances across space in a smooth, serene fashion, while we stumble and fall in our efforts to bridge distances between nations, cultures!
I am reminded of the famous lines from a passage titled – ‘The Paradox of our Times’.
“We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour. We conquered outer space but not inner space.” This inability to meet the neighbour has resulted in our fear – nay, paranoia – of our neighbour. Humanity suffers from IS – Insecurity Syndrome – which has become a seemingly incurable disease due to outfits like the ISIS!

When we talk of ‘insecurity’, we are not talking only about the insecurity of human beings, but also of the insecurity of our eco system. The root cause of the insecurity faced by us today, is the  UNCONTROLLED GREED! In his recent Encyclical, ‘Laudato Si’, Pope Francis says:
“The current global situation engenders a feeling of instability and uncertainty, which in turn becomes “a seedbed for collective selfishness”.   When people become self-centred and self-enclosed, their greed increases… Obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, above all when few people are capable of maintaining it, can only lead to violence and mutual destruction.” (No.204)

We are painfully aware that our sense of insecurity manifests itself in all the fields – physical, social, financial, political, psychological etc…etc. We can easily see that all these are inter-related. The more financial and social insecurity, the greater the violence! There is no strong political will to find a permanent solution to this situation. Any one can easily see that the gap between the haves and the have-nots is becoming a bottomless chasm! I feel, that in the final analysis, this is the main reason for all the insecurity we feel. Instead of bridging this gap, most of the governments spend more and more money on weapons. The best shield that can protect us is SHARING of our resources rather than stocking up wealth and weapons.

Sharing is the main theme in today’s liturgy. The readings from II Kings as well as the Gospel of John talk of the miraculous feeding of people. At the first glance, these readings seem to highlight the miraculous intervention of God. But, on a deeper analysis, we can find that God and Jesus did not produce food out of nothing. There was the element of human contribution.
2 Kings 4:42-44
A man came from Ba'al-shal'ishah, bringing the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Eli'sha said, "Give to the men, that they may eat." But his servant said, "How am I to set this before a hundred men?" So he repeated, "Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and have some left.'" So he set it before them. And they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the LORD.

We see a similar scene in John’s gospel – John 6: 1-15. This passage seems like a sequel to last week’s passage from Mark. The closing lines of last week’s gospel gave us a picture of the compassionate shepherd:
Mark 6:34
As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
This week’s gospel begins with Jesus, the Good Shepherd being concerned about feeding the people. His question of how to feed those people met with more questions. Then came a solution: "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish". Jesus, as if waiting for this clue, told his disciples to make the people sit down for a meal! All that Jesus required was a little effort from one of them and it came via a child!

Usually this miracle is looked upon as a miracle of multiplication performed by Jesus. But, there is another interpretation to this episode. This interpretation stems from the basic question – how is it that a child carried food to the desert? When a family goes on a journey, children do not think of carrying food. This is the job of the parents. They foresee what would be required by children and get prepared.
For the Jews, this foresight was almost second nature. Having suffered slavery and shortage of food for generations, they were careful to carry food whenever they left their house. So, here was a family which had come to the desert to meet Jesus. The mother of the family had prepared five loaves and two fish for the family to eat. The child was simply carrying the food packet. We can easily presume that many of those who were there around Jesus, carried some food.
As it was getting late, they began to feel pangs of hunger. They were hesitant to open their packets since they knew that what they had was insufficient to feed the crowd.
I can well imagine what happens in a railway compartment, when it is time for meals. Those who have brought food packets would be hesitant to open them. If one of them starts, then the others will follow. Sometimes, something more would happen… namely, if one begins to share the food, then the others would share and there would be a tasty meal from the bits and pieces of food items shared!
A similar situation prevailed in the desert… around Jesus. When Jesus told his disciples about feeding the people, the disciples as well as those sitting close to Jesus must have raised their eyebrows! Hesitations, questions, calculations are typical of adults. Thank God, children are different. Hence, the miracle happened.
The little lad heard Jesus discussing with his disciples about feeding the people. Without a second thought, the lad offered what he had carried from home – five loaves and two fish! Once the crowd saw this, then it was easy for them to open their packets and share…
Five loaves + two fish + Jesus’ blessing = more than 5000 people (men) fed + 12 baskets of left-over food!
Not a simple mathematics, but pure magic! I consider this – namely, that Jesus and the child inspiring the people to share – a much more powerful miracle than Jesus multiplying the loaves all by himself!

The world needs extraordinary miracles of sharing. How do we get rid of the scandal of millions dying of hunger? We can pray for God’s direct intervention; we can hope for efficient actions of governments; we can fight with the haves to share with the have-nots… OR, as the little lad, we can start sharing.

Let me close these reflections with two news items – one that talks of what is wrong with us and another talking of what can be done:
What is wrong with us?…
We Already Grow Enough Food For 10 Billion People -- and Still Can't End Hunger
(Source: Huffington Post - Posted: 05/02/2012; Updated: 12/18/2014)
Hunger is caused by poverty and inequality, not scarcity. For the past two decades, the rate of global food production has increased faster than the rate of global population growth. The world already produces more than 1 ½ times enough food to feed everyone on the planet. That's enough to feed 10 billion people, the population peak we expect by 2050. (The present population is around 7.3 billion) But the people making less than $2 a day -- most of whom are resource-poor farmers cultivating unviably small plots of land -- can't afford to buy this food.
In reality, the bulk of industrially-produced grain crops goes to biofuels and confined animal feedlots rather than food for the 1 billion hungry. The call to double food production by 2050 only applies if we continue to prioritize the growing population of livestock and automobiles over hungry people.
The following are some statistics gathered from the media:
  • Our present world population is around 7.3 billion…
  • The food prepared daily around the world can easily feed around 7.5 billion people…
  • Everyday around 1.4 billion go to bed hungry…
  • Hence, food that can feed around 1.6 billion people is thrown away daily.
  • Every year, around 3 million people die of hunger around the world. Most of these victims of hunger, are children!
What can be done?... Here is the second news item:
Spearheading a revolution with handful of rice (Source: UCAN-India)
July 15, 2012. Every drop makes an ocean. That adage perhaps never held so true as in the case of a Christian community in one of the poorest areas of India. A small community in Mizoram despite having not much to depend on for themselves have been religiously paying their tithes – “a handful rice.”
This community in the northeast not only supports itself financially, but has also managed to send out hundreds of missionaries. Behind their success is a simple practice called "a handful of rice."
Lalua lives in a tiny, remote village in Mizoram. Her family sustains on a meager income of less than $1 a day. Despite abject poverty, simple women like Lalua are spearheading a revolution that's sweeping the world of missions.
"Buhfai tham" is a practice where each Mizo family puts aside a handful of rice every time they cook a meal. Later, they gather it and offer it to the church. The church, in turn, sells the rice and generates income to support its work.

I rest my case.

P.S. As I was finishing my reflections for this Sunday, another news caught my attention:
Huge asteroid with $5 trillion worth of platinum to pass by Earth, published in The Hindu, July 18, 2015.
What struck me as very odd with this news item was the fact that an approaching asteroid - UW-158, was seen primarily as an object of investment (worth $5 trillion) rather than a celestial body. If this news were published, say, 10 or 15 years back, there would be some concern raised about the ‘safety’ of the earth. Discussions on whether the asteroid would collide with the earth etc. would have figured as headline. Now, more than safety concerns, the ‘property value’ of the asteroid has taken precedence. What was more striking in this piece of news is the fact that an asteroid mining company by name, Planetary Resources, is already operational! Our greed seems to go far beyond the earth!  As we have devastated our Mother Earth by our mining, we are ready to destroy other heavenly bodies as well!

Hospitality is Sharing Food Together

(The Paradox of Our Time)
(We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space.)

The current global situation engenders a feeling of instability and uncertainty, which in turn becomes “a seedbed for collective selfishness”. When people become self-centred and self-enclosed, their greed increases. (LAUDATO SI’ – No.204)

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” – Gandhi.

We Already Grow Enough Food For 10 Billion People -- and Still Can't End Hunger - அதாவது, "1000 கோடி மக்களுக்குத் தேவையான உணவை நாம் உற்பத்தி செய்கிறோம் - இருப்பினும், பட்டினியை ஒழிக்க முடியவில்லை"

Huge asteroid with $5 trillion worth of platinum to pass by Earth
The Hindu, July 18, 2015.

Time for God and self…

The Exhortation of the Apostles - James Tissot
Wikipedia

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Some of the most pleasant memories from my formation days as a Jesuit, come from my week-end ministries and my summer camps. The week-end ministries during the Novitiate days involved teaching catechism to kids and preparing them for the Sunday Liturgy. The ministry part of these experiences was reasonably attractive. The more attractive part came from the cycle ride, the warmth and the hero-worship I enjoyed among the kids. This was more evident during the summer camps where I was quite famous due to my singing ability. Oh, those lovely days!
In case I had rested only on these laurels, on these peripheral pleasant feelings, I would have become too complacent. I am not sure whether I would have learnt much if I had stayed at that level. Thank God, there were evaluation sessions for these ministries and for the summer camps. I had also reflected on them during my annual retreats. These moments of quiet recollection and evaluation helped me see these experiences in better light. Of course, my companions too helped me see myself better and hone my abilities and talents. Sometimes these evaluations served as painful chisels to make me a more rounded-off person.

Why am I reminiscing ‘those good-old-days’? Today’s Gospel talks of one such ‘evaluation’ session of the disciples with Jesus. Last week’s Gospel talked about how Jesus sent out his disciples two by two on their mission. Today we see them back after their mission. Here are the opening lines of today’s Gospel:
Mark 6: 30-31
The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

The apostles returned from their maiden missionary trip and hence they must have been quite excited and elated about all they did… the crowds that heard them in rapt attention, the evil spirits that came out of the people screaming, the sick persons who were in tears when they saw themselves cured…etc. etc. Oh, it was a glorious trip, really!
To such an excited sharing of experiences, the response of Jesus looked pretty simple, almost a wet-blanket over the fire of enthusiasm! If I were one of the apostles, I would have felt like a punctured balloon. What a kill-joy this Jesus was, I would have told myself! He simply said: "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while." Couldn’t He have said something more encouraging?

If Jesus had been one of the bosses of the result-driven, competitive, cut-throat, ‘professional’ groups, or, if he had been one of the political leaders, his response would have been very different. He would have pushed his disciples harder to achieve more, to show more results… more audience rating, more conversions, more healings, more exorcisms… more and more… Show me numbers, he would have demanded! Such bosses and leaders are more interested in the profit line which needs to hit the roof. They are least bothered about what happens to their employees. No wonder, the suicide rate of quite a few modern day, result-driven firms also hits the roof.
Thank God, Jesus was Jesus and none else. He was a Good Shepherd who took care of his sheep. He was not result-driven, but person-oriented. He was not like the ‘false shepherds’ as spoken of in the first reading from the book of Prophet Jeremiah (23: 1-6)

The best care a Good Shepherd can give his sheep is to make them rest peacefully in green meadows. We see this in the lovely Psalm 23. So, Jesus calls his disciples to a lonely place and rest a while. Rest is a great antidote to our present day world which is asking us to be constantly on the move. Even though most of our work is sedentary, we are asked to be ‘on the move’. As an antidote to this ‘driven’ style of life, Jesus suggests rest! Resting the body and mind can take care of the rest of our lives. This wisdom is evident in the ‘examen of conscience’ proposed by St Ignatius of Loyola.
Some spiritual experts claim that the ‘examen’ of St Ignatius is a master-stroke. This is not meant only for the religious and priests. It is a help to all of us engaged in seemingly endless activities throughout the day. Such endless activities make our lives more complicated, cluttered and ultimately, meaningless. A fifteen minutes silence per day where we can take stock of what is happening to us, can set a lot of things right at the right time. Usually, many of us allow problems to become more complex before we take efforts to set them right. An examen done daily, would help us become more and more aware of ‘what is’ in order to move to the realm of ‘what can be’ or ‘what ought to be’. Jesus is proposing such a session for his apostles.

Michael Faraday, an early pioneer of electromagnetic current, once addressed a convocation of scientists. For an hour, he held the audience spellbound with his lecture on the nature of the magnet. After he had finished, he received a thundering ovation.  The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, stood to congratulate him. The applause thundered again. Just as quickly, a deadened silence pervaded the audience. Faraday had left. It was the hour of a midweek prayer service in a little church of which he was a member.
If each of us can build our own little niches (‘lonely places’ as given in today’s Gospel) like Michael Faraday, and ‘escape’ there even for a few minutes everyday, the quality of our lives will surely improve. Of course, this quality oriented formula is dead against the quantity-driven world!

Retreating to a lonely place is not an escape from reality. This is made clear from the closing lines of today’s Gospel. Jesus had suggested going away to a lonely place to rest, since ‘they had no leisure even to eat’. But, once he saw the people, he set aside his personal needs and those of his apostles in order to help them out, since the need of the people was more acute.
Mark 6: 33-34
Now many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. As he went ashore he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Here is an invitation to all of us… to combine contemplation and action in our daily lives. To strike a balance between recollection and committed service to people who are in need. This is not an exclusive prerogative of priests and religious. It is an invitation to every Christian.
