Blessed are the generous

Hunger in a world of plenty

Dr. Karl Menninger, the world-renowned psychiatrist, was talking on one occasion to an unhappy but wealthy patient. He asked the patient what he was going to do with so much money. The patient replied, “Just worry about it, I suppose.” Menninger asked, “Well, do you get that much pleasure from worrying about it?” “No,” responded the patient, “but I get terrified when I think of giving some of it to somebody else.” Then Dr. Menninger went on to say something quite profound. He said, “Generous people are rarely mentally ill.” http://cbci.in/Sunday-Reflections.aspx

The full quotation of Dr Karl Menninger goes like this: “Money-giving is a very good criterion of a person's mental health. Generous people are rarely mentally ill people”. I am tempted to add, à la ‘modern beatitudes’ – “Blessed are the generous, for they shall be sane.” On the other hand, those who spend their entire life trying to reap and heap treasures on earth, also heap upon themselves all sorts of sickness. Buy one, get one free… Buy greed and get sick free! We meet such a person in the parable of Jesus, popularly titled ‘the Rich Fool’. (Luke 12: 16-21)
In the eyes of God this person was utterly foolish, because he was focused on himself and was selfish to the core. While he was planning what to do with his harvested goods, he liberally used the “aggressively possessive” pronouns “I” (six times) and “my” (five times). He was possessed by his possessions, instead of possessing them. He had built a fortress of selfishness around him through which only his own sweet self could pass. This was a veritable hell, but he imagined it to be heaven – false heaven.

What prompted him to build this false heaven – this castle in the air? The fruits of the harvest. The heap of grains reaching up to the ceiling, had blinded him from all the stark reality beyond. Jesus begins this parable with a simple statement: “The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully…” Obviously this ‘plenty’ did not come out of the blue and overnight. There were plenty of labourers involved in this process of production. Just imagine the scene of the labourers bringing in sacks of harvested grains to the barns. Those labourers must have been half-bent by the load they were carrying. Although they filled the barns of the rich man, they must have gone home on an empty stomach. None of these seem to bother the rich man one bit. All his attention was on the produce, not on the process and the people involved in the process! His thinking was short-circuited and warped. Naturally, God called him a ‘fool’. To the rich man, the grains simply came out of nowhere and he simply possessed them. He owed nothing to anyone! The grains filled not only his barns, but his mind and heart. There was no place for the people who caused this harvest.

When I was thinking how the harvested grains become the centre and the persons get ignored, my mind raced back to 2010 when I read some headlines in Indian newspapers:
UP: Food meant for kids eaten by dogs - July 21, 2010
After UP, now food grains rot in Maharashtra - July 23, 2010
Not a single food grain should be wasted: Supreme Court - July 27, 2010
Here are the lead lines of the last headline:
New Delhi:  The Supreme Court has observed that not a single food grain should be wasted. In a strongly-worded ruling, the apex court has told the government that food grains are rotting and if you can't do anything about it, then distribute it among the poor. The court has also sought government's response on this.
Why all this fuss? Close to 3 million tonnes, let me repeat… 3 MILLION TONNES of food grains rot across the country. This is simply not news about the Government’s inability to govern. It is also an unpardonable injustice!
These news items need to be seen in a context. Only when they are seen in the context of hunger in India, we begin to realise how ‘foolish’ we – all of us in India and all of us around the globe – have been. We begin to understand how much we stand accused like the foolish rich man depicted in today’s Gospel.
These three news items are to be seen in the context of the starvation deaths that occur in India year after year. At least 6,000 children are dying every day… let me repeat, EVERY DAY in India due to hunger and malnutrition. This is how a TV programme begins… If you have time, please watch “30 Minutes: Small, Hungry & Dying” prepared by IBNLive.Com. This video is available on YouTube under the title “6000 children starve to death in India EVERY DAY.

2010 is not the only year when such an atrocity took place. In 2001 there was a similar injustice. “We produce enough and more food in our country. But, we have a faulty PDS - Public Distribution System”. These were the comments by Vajpayee, the Prime Minister of India in 2001. How did our Prime Minister get this ‘enlightenment’? That year India had a stock of 90 million tonnes of grain in government storage, while people in Kashipur District in Orissa were dying of hunger. What does it mean to have 90 million tonnes of food grains? It simply means that 20 lakh people can be fed for 2 years with that much food… Most of these food grains were rotting in the open and, people were dying in India. Have the tragedies of 2001 and 2010 taught us lessons? I am afraid, not! This year (2013) there was a news headline in Times of India: Food worth Rs 50 thousand crore goes waste in India every year (January 11, 2013). It is a sad irony that such a news item appeared just before the famous harvest festival – Pongal. Every harvest brings us enough and more food. Still the number of underfed people grows year after year! Why? We have a very warped value system. Topsy-turvy idea of justice!

To prove this, I would like to return to the news on the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2010: the apex court has told the government that food grains are rotting and if you can't do anything about it then distribute it among the poor. A closer look at this ruling, pains my heart… the way the court has placed the poor in this context. If you can’t do anything about storing the grains, then distribute them among the poor. The apex court of India placed more stress on storing and hoarding rather than attending to the starving millions. Since FCI was incapable of storing, the court had asked the government to feed ‘at least’ the poor… The poor, as usual, take the least place!
When will come a time when we can hear the Supreme Court of India (or the legal court anywhere in the world) to give a verdict as follows: “It is unjust to store food grains when millions are starving in the country. Hence, we order the government to distribute the food grains first and foremost to the starving millions.” The poor take the ‘first and foremost’ position and not the ‘at least’ position!

It’s so easy to blame the government, the court, the FCI, the selfish rich, the black marketers, the politicians, … this litany is endless. Blame them, and then what? Remember… when we point a finger at our neighbour, there are three more pointing at us.
What should we do? Where do we begin? Here is a small snippet from the life of Ernest Hemingway, the Nobel laureate. Ernest Hemingway had a very unique habit. On the first day of every New Year, he gave away some of his most precious possessions. And when people asked him why he did that, he would answer, “If I can give them away, then I own them. But if I can’t give them away, they own me.” Very simple and idealistic… or, simplistic?

Jesus, who gave this challenging parable for our reflection, has also given his warning: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Luke 12: 15)

Feeding the world Starting at home

அப்போது, மனநல மருத்துவர் Karl Menninger மிக ஆழமான ஓர் எண்ணத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்: “Money-giving is a very good criterion of a person's mental health. Generous people are rarely mentally ill people.”"

Food Corporation of India

(a faulty PDS - Public Distribution System)!"

Food worth Rs 50 thousand crore goes waste in India every year (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-01-11)

World Youth Day, Rio – Pope’s Talk during the Vigil service

WYD – Vigil Service
With over 2 million youth participating, Pope Francis attended the Vigil on Copacabana beach on Saturday, July 27 around 7.30 p.m. During the vigil the youth presented a lovely tableau depicting the famous episode in the life of St Francis of Assisi, where Christ asks him ‘to rebuild the Church’. The Pope witnessed this tableau and then gave his reflections to the youth. Here is the full text of what the Pope said:

Dear Young Friends,

We have just recalled the story of Saint Francis of Assisi.  In front of the crucifix he heard the voice of Jesus saying to him: “Francis, go, rebuild my house”.  The young Francis responded readily and generously to the Lord’s call to rebuild his house.  But which house?  Slowly but surely, Francis came to realize that it was not a question of repairing a stone building, but about doing his part for the life of the Church.  It was a matter of being at the service of the Church, loving her and working to make the countenance of Christ shine ever more brightly in her.
Today too, as always, the Lord needs you, young people, for his Church.  Today too, he is calling each of you to follow him in his Church and to be missionaries.  How?  In what way?  Starting with the name of the place where we are, Campus Fidei, the field of faith, I have thought of three images that can help us understand better what it means to be a disciple and a missionary.  First, a field is a place for sowing seeds; second, a field is a training ground; and third, a field is a construction site.

1.         A field is a place for sowing seeds.  We all know the parable where Jesus speaks of a sower who went out to sow seeds in the field; some seed fell on the path, some on rocky ground, some among thorns, and could not grow; other seed fell on good soil and brought forth much fruit (cf. Mt 13:1-9).  Jesus himself explains the meaning of the parable: the seed is the word of God sown in our hearts (cf. Mt 13:18-23).  This, dear young people, means that the real Campus Fidei, the field of faith, is your own heart, it is your life.  It is your life that Jesus wants to enter with his word, with his presence.  Please, let Christ and his word enter your life, blossom and grow.
Jesus tells us that the seed which fell on the path or on the rocky ground or among the thorns bore no fruit.  What kind of ground are we?  What kind of terrain do we want to be?  Maybe sometimes we are like the path: we hear the Lord’s word but it changes nothing in our lives because we let ourselves be numbed by all the superficial voices competing for our attention; or we are like the rocky ground: we receive Jesus with enthusiasm, but we falter and, faced with difficulties, we don’t have the courage to swim against the tide; or we are like the thorny ground: negativity, negative feelings choke the Lord’s word in us (cf. Mt 13:18-22).  But today I am sure that the seed is falling on good soil, that you want to be good soil, not part-time Christians, not “starchy” and superficial, but real.  I am sure that you don’t want to be duped by a false freedom, always at the beck and call of momentary fashions and fads.  I know that you are aiming high, at long-lasting decisions which will make your lives meaningful.  Jesus is capable of letting you do this: he is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6).  Let’s trust in him.  Let’s make him our guide!

2.         A field is a training ground.  Jesus asks us to follow him for life, he asks us to be his disciples, to “play on his team”.  I think that most of you love sports!  Here in Brazil, as in other countries, football is a national passion.  Now, what do players do when they are asked to join a team?  They have to train, and to train a lot!  The same is true of our lives as the Lord’s disciples.  Saint Paul tells us: “athletes deny themselves all sorts of things; they do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable” (1 Cor 9:25).  Jesus offers us something bigger than the World Cup!  He offers us the possibility of a fulfilled and fruitful life; he also offers us a future with him, an endless future, eternal life.  But he asks us to train, “to get in shape”, so that we can face every situation in life undaunted, bearing witness to our faith.  How do we get in shape?  By talking with him: by prayer, which is our daily conversation with God, who always listens to us.  By the sacraments, which make his life grow within us and conform us to Christ.  By loving one another, learning to listen, to understand, to forgive, to be accepting and to help others, everybody, with no one excluded or ostracized.  Dear young people, be true “athletes of Christ”!

3.         A field is a construction site.  When our heart is good soil which receives the word of God, when “we build up a sweat” in trying to live as Christians, we experience something tremendous: we are never alone, we are part of a family of brothers and sisters, all journeying on the same path: we are part of the Church; indeed, we are building up the Church and we are making history.  Saint Peter tells us that we are living stones, which form a spiritual edifice (cf. 1 Pet 2:5).  Looking at this platform, we see that it is in the shape of a church, built up with stones and bricks.  In the Church of Jesus, we ourselves are the living stones.  Jesus is asking us to build up his Church, but not as a little chapel which holds only a small group of persons.  He asks us to make his living Church so large that it can hold all of humanity, that it can be a home for everyone!  To me, to you, to each of us he says: “Go and make disciples of all nations”.  Tonight, let us answer him: Yes, I too want to be a living stone; together we want to build up the Church of Jesus!  Let us all say together: I want to go forth and build up the Church of Christ!
In your young hearts, you have a desire to build a better world.  I have been closely following the news reports of the many young people who throughout the world have taken to the streets in order to express their desire for a more just and fraternal society.  But the question remains: Where do we start?  What are the criteria for building a more just society?  Mother Teresa of Calcutta was once asked what needed to change in the Church.  Her answer was: you and I!
Dear friends, never forget that you are the field of faith!  You are Christ’s athletes!  You are called to build a more beautiful Church and a better world.  Let us lift our gaze to Our Lady.  Mary helps us to follow Jesus, she gives us the example by her own “yes” to God: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me as you say” (Lk 1:38).  All together, let us join Mary in saying to God: let it be done to me as you say.  Amen!

World Youth Day, Rio – Pope’s Talk at the end of the Way of the Cross

Pope Francis has made a huge impression with his first foreign trip. He participated in the 28th World Youth Day held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His talks to the youth have been very simple, straightforward and appealing. Here is the talk he gave at the end of the Way of the Cross held on Copacabana beach on Friday, July 26th:

Dear Young Friends,
We have come here today to accompany Jesus on his journey of sorrow and love, the Way of the Cross, which is one of the most intense moments of World Youth Day.  At the end of the Holy Year of Redemption, Blessed John Paul II chose to entrust the Cross to you, young people, asking you “to carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and redemption” (Address to Young People, 22 April 1984).  Since then, the World Youth Day Cross has travelled to every continent and through a variety of human situations.  It is, as it were, almost “steeped” in the life experiences of the countless young people who have seen it and carried it.  No one can approach and touch the Cross of Jesus without leaving something of himself or herself there, and without bringing something of the Cross of Jesus into his or her own life.  I have three questions that I hope will echo in your hearts this evening as you walk beside Jesus: What have you left on the Cross, dear young people of Brazil, during these two years that it has been crisscrossing your great country?  What has the Cross of Jesus left for you, in each one of you?  Finally, what does this Cross teach us?

1.         According to an ancient Roman tradition, while fleeing the city during the persecutions of Nero, Saint Peter saw Jesus who was travelling in the opposite direction, that is, toward the city, and asked him in amazement: “Lord, where are you going?”  Jesus’ response was: “I am going to Rome to be crucified again.”  At that moment, Peter understood that he had to follow the Lord with courage, to the very end.  But he also realized that he would never be alone on the journey; Jesus, who had loved him even unto death on the Cross, would always be with him.  Jesus, with his Cross, walks with us and takes upon himself our fears, our problems, and our sufferings, even those which are deepest and most painful.  With the Cross, Jesus unites himself to the silence of the victims of violence, those who can no longer cry out, especially the innocent and the defenceless; with the Cross, he is united to families in trouble, those who mourn the loss of their children, or who suffer when they see them fall victim to false paradises, such as that offered by drugs.  On the Cross, Jesus is united with every person who suffers from hunger in a world where tons of food are thrown out each day; on the Cross, Jesus is united with those who are persecuted for their religion, for their beliefs or simply for the colour of their skin; on the Cross, Jesus is united with so many young people who have lost faith in political institutions, because they see in them only selfishness and corruption; he unites himself with those young people who have lost faith in the Church, or even in God because of the counter-witness of Christians and ministers of the Gospel.  The Cross of Christ bears the suffering and the sin of mankind, including our own.  Jesus accepts all this with open arms, bearing on his shoulders our crosses and saying to us: “Have courage!  You do not carry your cross alone!  I carry it with you.  I have overcome death and I have come to give you hope, to give you life” (cf. Jn 3:16).

2.         And so we can answer the second question: What has the Cross given to those who have gazed upon it or touched it?  What has it left in each one of us?  It gives us a treasure that no one else can give: the certainty of the unshakable love which God has for us. A love so great that it enters into our sin and forgives it, enters into our suffering and gives us the strength to bear it.  It is a love which enters into death to conquer it and to save us.  The Cross of Christ contains all the love of God, his immeasurable mercy.  This is a love in which we can place all our trust, in which we can believe.  Dear young people, let us entrust ourselves to Jesus, let us give ourselves over entirely to him (cf. Lumen Fidei, 16)!  Only in Christ crucified and risen can we find salvation and redemption.  With him, evil, suffering, and death do not have the last word, because he gives us hope and life: he has transformed the Cross from an instrument of hate, defeat and death into a sign of love, victory and life.
The first name given to Brazil was “The Land of the Holy Cross”.  The Cross of Christ was planted five centuries ago not only on the shores of this country, but also in the history, the hearts and the lives of the people of Brazil and elsewhere.  The suffering Christ is keenly felt here, as one of us who shares our journey even to the end.  There is no cross, big or small, in our life which the Lord does not share with us.

3.         But the Cross of Christ invites us also to allow ourselves to be smitten by his love, teaching us always to always look upon others with mercy and tenderness, especially those who suffer, who are in need of help, who need a word or a concrete action which requires us to step outside ourselves to meet them and to extend a hand to them.  How many people were with Jesus on the way to Calvary: Pilate, Simon of Cyrene, Mary, the women…  Sometimes we can be like Pilate, who did not have the courage to go against the tide to save Jesus’ life, and instead washed his hands.  Dear friends, the Cross of Christ teaches us to be like Simon of Cyrene, who helped Jesus to carry that heavy wood; it teaches us to be like Mary and the other women, who were not afraid to accompany Jesus all the way to the end, with love and tenderness.  And you?  Who are you like?  Like Pilate?  Like Simon?  Like Mary?
Dear friends, let us bring to Christ’s Cross our joys, our sufferings and our failures.  There we will find a Heart that is open to us and understands us, forgives us, loves us and calls us to bear this love in our lives, to love each person, each brother and sister, with the same love.  Amen!

Lessons in hospitality

Jesus-Mary-and-Martha

During my priestly formation as well as after Ordination, I have been showered with gifts from people. One of those gifts is the welcome I have felt in families I knew as well as families I knew not. Just because I was a ‘Brother’ or a ‘Father’ I was treated as a welcome guest.
I have enjoyed sumptuous and delicious meals offered by both the rich and the poor. The Readings of this Sunday (Gen. 18: 1-10 and Luke 10: 38-42) prompts me to recall some of those dinners offered. I know it is not fair to compare those dinners. But I wish to place these dinners side by side just to make a point…
In some of the more elegant, rich dinners I have been invited to, the conversation – sometimes – tended to revolve around the costly drinks or a particular costly dish served! Thinking of those dinners today, I raise this question: Who or what stole the limelight – the invited guests or the dinner served?
As a contrast, I can also think of some of the meals I have shared with middle-class or poor families. When I had returned from those dinners, sometimes I could not even recollect what I ate there. But, I was feeling a sense of fulfilment, having spent quality time with the family members. I also know how some of them had taken efforts to find out what I like and what food does not agree with me etc. Thus I was made to feel that I was a very important person to the family.
Dinner or the Guest… what or who takes the precedence? This is the question addressed in today’s Gospel. Jesus is the guest in the house of Martha and Mary. To Martha Jesus was important; but, the dinner to be served to him was also equally, if not more, important. To Mary, Jesus was important… Period! Jesus seems to approve of the choice made by Mary. “Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken from her.” (Luke 10: 42)

Two years back I met a Jesuit priest from the U.S. When I told him that I was from India and from the south, his face lit up. He recollected the welcome he experienced in Tamil Nadu. For many Europeans and Americans a visit to India leaves them with pleasant memories of our hospitality. As Indians, we feel truly proud about our hospitality.
‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ in Sanskrit means "Guest is God". Although the ‘Incredible India’ campaign of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has used this phrase for commercial purposes, the original implication of this famous phrase remains intact in most parts of India. For most Indians, the guest deserves attention and respect as does God. The idea of God coming in the form of a guest is the core of today’s reading from Genesis 18: 1-10.

Comparisons are odious, especially when you compare a story like that of Abraham entertaining total strangers, with something that happens to us today. Not practical. I understand this. Still, I would like to compare, rather contrast, this story with one of my personal experiences. About twenty years back when I was in a famous city in the U.S., I went to meet a family known to me. When I reached their apartment, I rang the calling bell. (Mobiles were not popular, those days…) There was the usual “who’s this?” voice. When I confirmed my identity, the door clicked open. They lived on the eighth floor. When I reached their door, once again there was an enquiry from behind closed doors and then my host had to open (believe me) around three doors to let me in. I just wondered whether a life like this was worth all the efforts taken by the couple to reach the US. I told them that they were living in a glorified prison. Well, such glorified prisons are in vogue in India today. With home security devices multiplying year after year, the idea of letting a stranger into one’s house is becoming more of a stranger-than-fiction episode.

The episode of Abraham is really very strange, but it is also the ideal proposed in the Indian tradition. Abraham goes out of the way to entertain guests as if it was his main purpose in life. Abraham invites the guests in and then begins preparing the dinner. Strange again. I am reminded of many houses where after the arrival of the unannounced guest, the host rises to the occasion and plays the perfect host. I have known middle class or poor families where the guest is provided the best while those at home do not even have decent meals. I have experienced this so often as a priest. What do they gain treating me this way? This is a ‘commercial’ question. The answer to this question would be the beaming smiles on their faces. No commerce, no strings… simply a demonstration of deep love for the guest.

In contrast to this show of affection, I am also thinking of instances where someone holds a party just to show off. A wedding that took place in 2004 is, probably, still the costliest wedding on earth. It is rumoured that anywhere between 60 to 70 million dollars were spent on this wedding. This works out to be 270 to 300 crores of rupees – enough to feed 30 crores of poor people for a day. Probably the food that was wasted that day could have easily fed around 10 crores. (For those who may not understand the term crore, 1 crore = 10 millions) The number of guests invited for the wedding did not exceed 1000. Scandalous, indeed. But the greatest scandal is that this person is an Indian!

Let us get back to Abraham. The reason for him to provide food for his guests was quite simple: “Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant." (Gen. 18: 5) Nothing in return. Of course, Abraham was blessed with a child. But, that was a later surprise. His primary purpose was simple – eat something, get refreshed so that you may be able to travel better.
Can life be so simple, without expectations, without calculations? Don’t ask me. I don’t have answers to this question. But, I know of people who have treated me like this… without expecting anything from me. So, I guess it is possible.

The ideal of India – ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ – as practised by Abraham, is expressed in similar yet different ways by Thiruvalluvar and the author of the Letter to the Hebrews.
He who treats guests well, and awaits more guests will become an honoured guest among angels. (Thirukkural 86)
Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
(Hebrews 13: 1-2)
Either we entertain angels in our homes and receive their blessings. Or, we become angels entertaining those who are in great need.

Our closing thoughts are on the World Youth Day which begins in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. We pray that the First Trip of Pope Francis goes well without any hitch. We also pray that this World Youth Day which has attracted thousands of youth from across the globe will be an occasion where the youth feel accepted as welcome guests in the present day world as well as accept the human family as guests, especially the poor and the needy who feel unwelcome wherever they go!
