Street Lamp-lighter

Anybody can serve – Martin Luther King

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Mission Sunday

Every year, on the penultimate Sunday of October, the Church celebrates the Mission Sunday. Pope Pius XI, in the year 1926, established this day, as the day of prayer for all the missionary efforts of the Catholic Church. This year, for the 92nd Mission Sunday, Pope Francis has given a message with the title: "Together with young people, let us bring the Gospel to all". With the World Synod of Bishops on the theme of young men and women, entering its final week, this call of Pope Francis is all the more relevant. For this world, especially the world of the youth, reeling under ‘bad-worse-worst-news’ 24x7 all through the year, we need to bring ‘the Good News’ to all! That is the special mission set before all of us, especially the youth.

The moment we hear the word, ‘mission’, we may assign this ‘job’ to the Bishops, Priests and Religious. That is a very narrow view of the word. The broader view of ‘mission’ talks not of a ‘job done’ but a ‘life lived’. The famous words of the great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore come to mind: “Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man.”
Yes, each of us has been sent as a gift into this world with a special message and a mission. Every Christian is expected to proclaim the Good News that ‘God is passionately in love with this world, STILL’. This proclamation is to be done more by how we live than by what we say! The ‘mission’ assigned to every Christian is that of a ‘lamp-lighter’, as described by John Ruskin.

One evening, the famous British author John Ruskin was sitting in his house looking out the window. He lived in an age when there was no electricity to light the street lights. Across the valley was a street on the hillside. There Ruskin could see one lamp after another being lit by the lamp-lighter as he went along. Because of the darkness and the distance, Ruskin could not see the lamp-lighter, only his burning torch and the trail of lights he left behind.
Seeing that, Ruskin turned to the person sitting with him and said, "There’s a good illustration of a Christian. People may never have known him, they may never have met him, they may never even have seen him, but they know he passed through their world by the trail of lights he left behind him."

This imagery of a Christian painted by Ruskin is the anti-thesis of what the world teaches us. It tells us to bathe in the floodlight or spotlight, be in the limelight, and even, steal the limelight. As against this, the Christian calling is to become a light, become a candle to light up the darkness around.
Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, used a similar imagery to depict the mission of every Christian.   Jesus said: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:14-16).

Dwelling more on the imagery of what a light does, it is interesting to note that once we light a lamp, our attention is not on the lamp, but on things around the lamp. If we continuously gaze at the lamp or, for that matter, any light, including the sunlight, our eyes begin to hurt. The purpose of light is not to draw attention to itself, but to help us see other objects with the help of the light. This is the Christian mission – to become the light of the world!

Being the light is not an easy mission. The world is comfortable with the darkness.  (Cf. John 3:19-21) Hence, light becomes a disturbance. Jesus was aware of his mission of being the Light of the world and he was also aware of the price he would be paying to accomplish his mission. He warned his disciples about the cruel death that was awaiting him in Jerusalem. This is given as the Gospel for our liturgy this Sunday. (Mark 10:35-45)

Mark records the discrepancy between the wavelength of Jesus and that of his disciples thrice in his Gospel. When Jesus predicted his passion for the first time, Peter called him aside and tried to put some sense into Jesus. Jesus rebuked him in severe terms: “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.” (Mk. 8:33). We read this Gospel five weeks back, on the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time. (Mk. 8:27-35)
When Jesus predicted his passion the second time, the disciples were least bothered about it, since they were more worried about who was the greatest among them. This Gospel was read on the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. (Mk. 9:30-37). Today, on the 29th Sunday, we have the third prediction of Jesus. Here again, we see another anti-climax coming in the form of a strange request from James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Jesus was speaking of him being raised on the Cross whereas, James and John were making requests for two chairs on the right and left of Jesus.

This Sunday’s Gospel is about a choice – Chair or Cross? Boss or Servant? Both Chair and Cross are thrones. Chair with a capital C denotes the chair of power. There have been many who have died for a Chair and many more who have killed for a Chair. We also know that many have been killed on a Cross and many have died for the Cross.

When James and John made this ‘job application’, Jesus told them point blank, “You do not know what you are asking.” (Mk. 10:38)  These words of Jesus were not only spoken to James and John but to all those who seek thrones – they do not know what they are asking? We are aware that those who are seeking positions of power know what they are doing. But, digging deeper, we can find out that their idea and knowledge of power are warped. Knowing full well, how ignorant these power-mongers can be, Jesus made the appeal to the Father on the Cross: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

Jesus, sensing that the ‘childish’ request of James and John had made the other disciples angry, gave them a lesson in ‘Servant Leadership’. Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.” (Mark 8:42-44)

Servant Leadership is a concept that has gained momentum in quite a few companies and institutions around the world. I think even business schools have begun to teach this! Here is a story of one who practised this type of leadership:
During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers who were busy pulling out a horse carriage stuck in deep mud. Their officer was shouting instructions to them while making no attempt to help. The stranger who witnessed the scene, asked the officer why he wasn't helping. With great dignity, the officer replied, "Sir, I am a Corporal!" The stranger dismounted from his horse and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers himself. When the job was completed, he turned to the corporal and said, "Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this, and don’t have enough men to do it, inform your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again." Too late, the proud Corporal recognized General George Washington.

When Pope Francis assumed the leadership of the Church on March 19, 2013 - the Feast of St Joseph - he stated clearly his idea of power and authority. Here is an extract from his homily that day: Today, together with the feast of Saint Joseph, we are celebrating the beginning of the ministry of the new Bishop of Rome, the Successor of Peter, which also involves a certain power. Certainly, Jesus Christ conferred power upon Peter, but what sort of power was it?... Let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross. He must be inspired by the lowly, concrete and faithful service which marked Saint Joseph and, like him, he must open his arms to protect all of God’s people and embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom Matthew lists in the final judgment on love: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-46). Only those who serve with love are able to protect!

George Washington, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and Pope Francis hold a special place in human history. They are living examples of what Jesus speaks of in today’s Gospel – Servant Leadership.
Chair and Cross are signs of getting enthroned. The way to the Chair is overcrowded. You may have to step on others’ toes and sometimes may have to crush others under your feet. The way to the Cross, on the other hand, will be relatively free and, most of the time, lonely!  Chair or Cross? Street Lamp-lighter or seeker of spot light? The choice is yours!

அக்டோபர் 21, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று நாம் சிறப்பிக்கும் 92வது மறைபரப்புப்பணி நாளுக்கென திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் வழங்கியச் செய்தி, "Together with young people, let us bring the Gospel to all", அதாவது, "இளையோருடன் இணைந்து, நற்செய்தியை அனைவருக்கும் கொணர்வோமாக" என்ற தலைப்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Woman rickshaw puller from Bangladesh

யூத குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்து, பின்னர் கிறிஸ்தவ மறையைத் தழுவிய Edersheim அவர்கள், "Sketches of Jewish Life in the Days of Christ" அதாவது, "கிறிஸ்துவின் காலத்தில் யூத வாழ்வின் குறிப்புகள்" என்ற நூலை, 1876ம் ஆண்டு வெளியிட்டார்.

Radical decisions – Hallmark of Saints

Canonization 2018

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Canonization

“Holiness … is for everyone! big and small; men and women; it is proposed as a possibility! Indeed, it is proposed as a duty! Holiness, let us say with joy and amazement, is for all!
Dear children, two things are needed for holiness: the grace of God and good will. Do you have these two things? Yes? Then you are holy!”
These words resounded at St Peter’s Square, Vatican, on March 16, 1966, during the Papal Audience. That day, there were hundreds of children gathered at St Peter’s Square for the Papal Audience and hence, the Pope made a special attempt to make things very simple on the topic “The Duty of Holiness”. It was Pope Paul VI.

“It is a great moment when people realize that they are God’s instruments. We live as long as God wants us to live; we are able as long as God enables us.”
These words are from the final public homily given by Archbishop Óscar Romero. This was given on March 23, 1980, the V Sunday of Lent. The next day, March 24, the eve of the Feast of the Annunciation, Archbishop Romero was shot dead while celebrating Mass. Talk about premonition! ‘We live as long as God wants us to live’… Prophetic words, truly!

The Pope who declared that ‘holiness is for everyone’ and the Archbishop who said that ‘it is a great moment when we realize that we are God’s instruments’, are canonized as Saints during the Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on Sunday, October 14.  Along with a Pope, and an Archbishop, two diocesan priests, two nuns and a lay person (a young man of 19 years) are canonized in the same ceremony. Indeed, holiness is for everyone!

On this day of Canonization, our reflections revolve around holiness. No one is a born saint (except Mary and Jesus), but all of us are called to be saints. Pope Paul VI said that holiness requires ‘the grace of God and good will’. The process of holiness is tied up with our willingness to become holy.  As human beings we are the only creatures who are given the will power, a capacity to decide! Our intelligence and will power help us to choose the best.

The 15th World Synod of Bishops with the theme: “Young People, Faith, and Vocational Discernment”, brings into focus the young women and men and their capacity to discern and decide. At this juncture, we are given a Gospel (Mark 10:17-30), that talks of a young man who comes to Jesus to help him decide the course of action he needs to take in order to ‘inherit eternal life’ – in other words, ‘to become holy’. Jesus prescribes the commandments as ‘a starter’. But, when Jesus finds out that the young man was ready for the ‘magis’ (the Jesuit term of ‘greater things’!), He proposed a radical solution – a way of life that would turn the young man’s life on its head! The young man went away sorrowful for he had great possessions. (Mk. 10:22)

We are sure that many Saints had approached Jesus to get his directions as to what they need to do to ‘inherit eternal life’. For all of them Jesus proposed very radical ways, and they were willing to take up the challenge. That is what distinguished them from the rest of us. One of the Saints who chose to follow Jesus more radically was Archbishop Romero!

Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez, born in 1917, was ordained a Priest when he was 25. In 1970, Romero was appointed an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of San Salvador. In 1974, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Santiago de María, a poor, rural region, where he may have come into contact with the harsh realities of El Salvador. On 23 February 1977, Romero was appointed Archbishop of San Salvador. All the three appointments were given by Pope Paul VI.
Romero spent his years up until 1977 as a pious, conservative cleric who, by his silence, may have quietly sided with the rich, the military, and the powerful. When he became the Archbishop of San Salvador, the rich and the powerful were very happy since they knew that they had a ‘safe’ Archbishop who would not rock the boat. On the other hand, the Jesuits at the UCA (The Cenral American University) in San Salvador were crushed. They immediately wrote him off -- all but one, Rutilio Grande, who reached out to Romero in the weeks after his installation and urged him to learn from the poor and speak on their behalf.
Grande himself was a giant for social justice. He organized the rural poor in Aguilares, and paid for it with his life on March 12, 1977. This murder took place hardly two weeks after Romero took up his responsibility as the Archbishop of San Salvador. Standing over Grande's dead body that night, Romero was transformed into one of the world's great champions for the poor and the oppressed. From then on, he stood with the poor, and denounced every act of violence, injustice and war. He became a fiery prophet of justice and peace, "the voice of the voiceless."

The day after Grande's death, Romero preached a sermon that stunned El Salvador. To protest the government's participation in the murders, Romero closed the parish school for three days and cancelled all masses in the country the following week, except for one special mass in the Cathedral. Over one hundred thousand people attended the Cathedral Mass that Sunday and heard Romero's bold call for justice, disarmament and peace. Grande's life and death bore good fruit in the heart and soul of Romero. Suddenly, the nation had a towering figure in its midst.

This ‘transformation’ of Romero sent shock waves to Vatican. But, Romero had a great friend in Paul VI. According to Roberto Morozzo della Rocca, a professor of contemporary history at Roma Tre University and author of a biography of Romero, Pope Paul VI had a deep appreciation and affection for Romero, despite the rumors and gossip that floated around the Vatican corridors.
One of the first meetings between Paul VI and Romero, Morozzo said, occurred shortly after he was named Archbishop of San Salvador. Within days of losing his good friend, Fr Grande, Archbishop Romero travelled to Rome and met the Pope on March 26, 1977. Pope Paul told him fraternally a Latin phrase that said: ‘Courage! You’re the one in charge!’
The two future saints met again in June 1978. During this meeting, according to the Archbishop, Pope Paul said, “I understand your difficult work. It is a work that perhaps may not be understood; you need to have a lot of patience and strength. I know that not everyone thinks like you; it is difficult in the circumstances of your country to find that unanimity of thought. Nevertheless, proceed with courage, with patience, with strength and with hope.”
After returning from Rome, Romero also delivered the pope’s words of encouragement to the people of El Salvador while celebrating Mass July 2, 1978. “‘They are a people,’ the pope told me, ‘who fight for recognition, they look for a more just environment. And you must love the people, you must help them. Be patient, be strong and help them. And tell them the pope loves them, he loves them and is following their difficulties; but to never look for solutions through irrational violence, that they never let themselves be led by the currents of hate’,” Romero said.

Encouraged by the support and blessings from Pope Paul VI, Archbishop Romero continued his life as an apostle of peace and justice in El Salvador. As the arrests, torture, disappearances and murders continued, Romero made two radical decisions which were unprecedented. First, on Easter Monday, 1978, he opened the seminary in downtown San Salvador to welcome any and all displaced victims of violence. Hundreds of homeless, hungry and brutalized people moved into the seminary, transforming the quiet religious retreat into a crowded, noisy shelter, make-shift hospital, and playground.
Next, he halted construction on the new Cathedral in San Salvador. When the war is over, the hungry are fed, and the children are educated, then we can resume building our cathedral, he said. Both historic moves stunned the other bishops, cast judgment on the Salvadoran government, and lifted the peoples' spirits.

When President Jimmy Carter announced, in February 1980, that he was going to increase U.S. military aid to El Salvador by millions of dollars a day, Romero was shocked. He wrote a long public letter to Carter, asking the United States to cancel all military aid. Carter ignored Romero's plea, and sent the aid. (Between 1980 and 1992, the U.S. funded El Salvador government, $6 billion, which helped the government to kill 75,000 poor Salvadorans.)
In the weeks afterwards, the killings increased. So did the death threats against Romero. He made a private retreat, prepared for his death, discovered an even deeper peace, and mounted the pulpit. During his March 23, 1980, Sunday sermon, (which was his last public homily) Romero let loose and issued one of the greatest appeals for peace and disarmament in church history:
I would like to make an appeal in a special way to the men of the army, to the police, to those in the barracks. Brothers, you are part of our own people. You kill your own campesino brothers and sisters. And before an order to kill that a man may give, the law of God must prevail that says: Thou shalt not kill! No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the law of God. No one has to fulfill an immoral law. It is time to recover your consciences and to obey your consciences rather than the orders of sin. The church, defender of the rights of God, of the law of God, of human dignity, the dignity of the person, cannot remain silent before such abomination. We want the government to take seriously that reforms are worth nothing when they come about stained with so much blood. In the name of God, and in the name of this suffering people whose laments rise to heaven each day more tumultuously, I beg you, I ask you, I order you in the name of God: Stop the repression!

The next day, March 24, 1980, Romero presided over a small evening mass in the chapel of the hospital compound where he lived. He read from John's Gospel: "Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains only a grain. But if it dies, it bears much fruit "(12:23-26). Then he preached about the need to give our lives for others as Christ did. Just as he concluded, he was shot in the heart by a man standing in the back of the church. He fell behind the altar and collapsed at the foot of a huge crucifix depicting a bloody and bruised Christ. Romero's vestments, and the floor around him, were covered in blood. He gasped for breath and died in minutes.

As we thank God for raising this Apostle of Peace and Justice to sainthood, we also thank God for St Pope Paul VI who stood by St Oscar Romero and helped him in his journey to holiness.

Of the seven Blesseds who are canonized this Sunday, one is Nunzio Sulprizio, a young man of 19 years, who died of bone cancer and various other complications in the year 1836. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI in the year 1963. Now, together with the same Pope, he is canonized. It is very meaningful to canonize this simple, young man during the World Synod of Bishops on the theme of the youth.

The other four Blesseds who are canonized on Sunday:
Blessed Francesco Spinelli, a diocesan priest and Founder of the Institute of the Sister Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament, was born in Milan (Italy) on 14 April 1853 and died at Rivolta d’Adda (Italy) on 6 February 1913.
Blessed Vincenzo Romano, another diocesan priest, was born at Torre del Greco (Italy) on 3 June 1751 and died there on 20 December 1831.
Blessed Maria Caterina Kasper, was the Foundress of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. She was born on 26 May 1820 in Dernbach (Germany) and died there on 2 February 1898.
Blessed Nazaria Ignazia March Mesa (as a religious took the name: Nazaria Ignazia di Santa Teresa di Gesù), Foundress of the Congregation of the Misioneras Cruzadas de la Iglesia Sisters, was born in Madrid (Spain) on 10 January 1889 and died in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on 6 July 1943.

May these seven new Saints help us make more radical decisions for Christ and His people!

Canonization at St Peter’s Square

(Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment)
