The Lord is my Shepherd… ஆண்டவரே என் ஆயர்

Hidden agenda… is a term that has loads of negative connotations. But, I guess it need not be so. When I took up the Psalms for my Bible Reflection programme, there was a hidden agenda there. I wanted to speak of Psalm 23 at length. That time has come. I wish to share all the nice things I have learnt about this Psalm.
I am sure many of you may have come across the famous book “The Lord Is My Shepherd” by the famous Rabbi – Harold S. Kushner. I have already spoken earlier in one of my reflections about his best seller “When Bad Things Happen to Good People”. This book was published in 2003, two years after the famous twin tower attack in New York. The book on Psalm 23 is given the subtitle: The healing wisdom of the twenty third psalm. When I read this book, I was seriously thinking of translating it into Tamil. These reflections will be a good chance to begin this process. Talk about hidden agenda!
This psalm has six verses that can be split into 14 ideas. Even if we take two ideas per week, I guess these reflections will continue for at least six to seven weeks. I can assure you that the time spent on this psalm is worth it.
In chapter one of his book, Kushner talks of how this psalm is the only chapter of the Bible that most people in the English-speaking world know by heart. I think that assumption is true in all languages. I can surely vouch for the Tamil-speaking world. Most of us can sing this psalm along with the congregation without the help of a hymn book. In my introduction to the Book of Psalms I mentioned that psalms are used by the believing community on various occasions. This particular psalm has been used at the bedside of a person who is sick or at the time of losing someone… This psalm brings home lot of peace and comfort. Here are the lovely verses from this famous psalm:

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,
for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

There are so many anecdotes and interpretations related to this psalm. One of those anecdotes goes like this:

There was once a Shakespearean actor who was known everywhere for his one-man shows of readings and recitations from the classics. He would always end his performance with a dramatic reading of Psalm 23.
Each night, without exception, as the actor began his recitation – “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want”, the crowd would listen attentively. And then, at the conclusion of the Psalm, they world rise in thunderous applause in appreciation of the actor’s incredible ability to bring the verse to life.
But one night, just before the actor was to offer his customary recital of Psalm 23, a young man from the audience spoke up. “Sir, do you mind if tonight I recite Psalm 23?” The actor was quite taken back by this unusual request, but he allowed the young man to come forward and stand front and centre on the stage to recite the Psalm, knowing that the ability of this unskilled youth would be no match for his own talent.
With a soft voice, the young man began to recite the words of the Psalm. When he was finished, there was no applause. There was no standing ovation as on other nights. All that could be heard was the sound of weeping. The audience had been so moved by the young man’s recitation that every eye was full of tears. Amazed by what he had heard, the actor said to the youth, “I don’t understand. I have been performing Psalm 23 for years. I have a lifetime of experience and training – but I have never been able to move an audience as you have tonight. Tell me, what is your secret?”

The young man quietly replied, “Well sir, you know the Psalm… I know the Shepherd.”

There is also another version of this story where, instead of the young man, there is an older person who recites the psalm from his heart. Whatever is the story, the message is clear. Knowing the Shepherd is, anyday, better than knowing the psalm. This will be our endeavour… to know the Shepherd!

Let me close with another story not directly connected with Psalm 23, but can throw light on how one can deal with obstacles in life. I have shared this story as the thought for the day in the Tamil section.

One night a man was sleeping in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Saviour appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore, and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.
… One day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord.
"Lord" he said, "I have laboured long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimetre. What is wrong? Why am I failing?"
The Lord responded compassionately, "My friend, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven't moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. I, my friend, will now move the rock."

At times, when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just simple obedience and faith in Him.... By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but know that it is still God who moves the mountains. You just P.U.S.H.!

நாளுமொரு நல்லெண்ணம்
உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த அந்த இளைஞனின் அறை ஒளி வெள்ளத்தில் நிறைந்தது. கண் விழித்த அவன் முன் கடவுள் நின்றார். "மகனே, உனக்கு ஒரு தனிப்பட்ட பணியைத் தருகிறேன். உன் வீட்டுக்கு முன் உள்ள பாறையை முழு வல்லமையோடு நீ தள்ள வேண்டும்." கடவுள் இதைச் சொல்லிவிட்டு மறைந்தார்.
அடுத்த நாள் காலை அந்த இளைஞன் பாறையைத் தன் முழு வல்லமையோடு தள்ளினான். அது கொஞ்சமும் அசையவில்லை. பல மணி நேர போராட்டத்திற்குப் பின், அடுத்த நாள் தொடரலாம் என்று விட்டு விட்டான்.
அடுத்த நாள், அதற்கடுத்த நாள் என்று ஓராண்டு இந்த முயற்சியைத் தொடர்ந்தான் அந்த இளைஞன். பாறை இருந்த இடத்தை விட்டு நகர மறுத்தது.
"கடவுளே, ஒரு பயனுமற்ற இந்தப் பணியை ஏன் எனக்குக் கொடுத்தீர்?" என்று இளைஞன் முறையிட்டான்.
"மகனே, உன் கரங்கள், உன் தோள், உன் கால்கள்... உன் உடல் முழுவதையும் ஒரு முறை பார். உன் கேள்விக்கு பதில் கிடைக்கும்." என்றார் கடவுள்.
இளைஞன் தன்னையே ஒரு முறை பார்த்தான். அவன் உடல் முழுவதும், ஒவ்வொரு அங்கமும் வலுவடைந்து, முறுக்கேறி, ஏறக்குறைய அந்த பாறையைப் போல் உறுதியாக இருந்தது.
"பாறையைத் தள்ளுவது தான் உனக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட பணி. அதை அசைக்கவோ, இடம் பெயர்க்கவோ நான் சொல்லவில்லை. பாறையை இடம் பெயர்ப்பதை விட, அந்தப் பாறையைப் போல் நீ மாற வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே நான் உனக்கு இந்தப் பணியைக் கொடுத்தேன்." என்றார் கடவுள்.
தள்ளுதல் என்று பொருள்படும் PUSH என்ற ஆங்கில வார்த்தைக்கு நான்கு எழுத்துக்கள். ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒரு வார்த்தையின் முதல் எழுத்து என பார்க்கும் போது, PUSH என்ற வார்த்தையை Pray Until Something Happens என்று விரிவாக்கலாம். அதாவது, ஏதாவதொன்று நடக்கும் வரை செபம் செய்.


விவிலியத் தேடல்:

விவிலியத் தேடலில் திருப்பாடல்கள் பற்றி நான் என் பகிர்வுகளை ஆரம்பித்ததற்குப் பல காரணங்கள் உண்டு. அந்தக் காரணங்களில் மிக, மிக முக்கியமான காரணம்... திருப்பாடல் 23. "ஆண்டவர் என் ஆயன்" என்று ஆரம்பமாகும் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலை நான் ஆங்கிலத்திலும், தமிழிலும் பாடி மகிழ்ந்திருக்கிறேன். பல முறை தியானித்துப் பலனடைந்திருக்கிறேன். உடல் நோய் கண்டவர்கள், குடும்பத்தில் ஒருவரை இழந்து தவித்தவர்கள் பலர் இந்தப் பாடல் வழியாக ஓரளவு மன சாந்தி அடைந்ததைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன்.
இந்தத் திருப்பாடலைப் பற்றி கட்டுரைகள் படித்திருக்கிறேன், இணையதளத்தில் விவரங்கள் சேகரித்திருக்கிறேன். இவைகளை விவிலியத் தேடல்கள் வழியாக உங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள விழைகிறேன். நான் பெற்ற இன்பம் நீங்களும் பெற வேண்டும் என்ற ஆவல்.
இந்தத் திருப்பாடலைக் குறித்து நான் கற்றவைகளில் என்னை அதிகம் கவர்ந்த, பாதித்த ஒரு நூல் Harold Kushner என்ற யூத குரு எழுதிய "The Lord is my Shepherd" என்ற நூல். 2003ம் ஆண்டு வெளியான இந்த நூல், திருப்பாடல் 23ஐப் பற்றிய மிக அழகான, ஆழமான விளக்கங்களைக் கூறும் ஒரு புத்தகம். 2001ம் ஆண்டு அமெரிக்காவில் வர்த்தகக் கோபுரங்கள் இரண்டு தாக்கப்பட்டதைத் தொடர்ந்து அமெரிக்க மக்கள், உலக மக்கள் எழுப்பி வந்த முக்கிய கேள்விகளுக்கு, உலகத்தில் நடக்கும் பல துன்பங்களையும், கடவுளையும் இணைத்து எழுப்பப்பட்ட பல கேள்விகளுக்குப் பதில் சொல்லும் வகையில் இந்தப் புத்தகம் எழுதப்பட்டது. இந்த நூலைத் தமிழில் மொழி பெயர்க்க வேண்டும் என்பது என் கனவு. அந்தக் கனவுக்கு இந்தத் தேடல் ஒரு நல்ல முயற்சியாக இருக்கும்.

இதோ திருப்பாடல் 23
ஆண்டவரே என் ஆயர்: எனக்கேதும் குறையில்லை. பசும்புல் வெளிமீது எனை அவர் இளைப்பாறச் செய்வார்: அமைதியான நீர்நிலைகளுக்கு எனை அழைத்துச் செல்வார். அவர் எனக்குப் புத்துயிர் அளிப்பார்: தம் பெயர்க்கேற்ப எனை நீதிவழி நடத்திடுவார்: மேலும், சாவின் இருள்சூழ் பள்ளத்தாக்கில் நான் நடக்க நேர்ந்தாலும், நீர் என்னோடு இருப்பதால் எத்தீங்கிற்கும் அஞ்சிடேன்: உம் கோலும் நெடுங்கழியும் என்னைத் தேற்றும். என்னுடைய எதிரிகளின் கண் முன்னே எனக்கொரு விருந்தினை ஏற்பாடு செய்கின்றீர்: என் தலையில் நறுமணத் தைலம் பூசுகின்றீர்: எனது பாத்திரம் நிரம்பி வழிகின்றது. உண்மையாகவே, என் வாழ்நாள் எல்லாம் உம் அருள் நலமும் பேரன்பும் எனைப் புடைசூழ்ந்துவரும்: நானும் ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் நெடுநாள் வாழ்ந்திருப்பேன்.

திருப்பாடல் 23ல் 6 திருவசனங்கள் உள்ளன. அவைகளில் 14 கருத்துக்கள் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒவ்வொரு கருத்தும் ஒரு வைரச் சுரங்கம். எனவே இந்தத் திருப்பாடல் பற்றிய நமது தேடல், நமது பகிர்வுகள் நிச்சயம் ஒரு சில வாரங்களாவது தொடரும்.

விவிலியத்தின் எத்தனை பகுதிகளை உங்களால் மனப்பாடமாகச் சொல்ல முடியும்? உங்களில் ஒரு சிலர், ஒருவேளை பலர், விவிலியத்தின் பல பகுதிகளை வரிக்கு வரி சொல்லக் கூடிய திறமை பெற்றவர்களாய் இருப்பீர்கள். உங்களது ஆர்வத்திற்கு முன் நான் தலை வணங்குகிறேன். எனக்கு அவ்வளவு பகுதிகள் மனப்பாடமாய்த் தெரியாது. போலி தாழ்ச்சியல்ல, நண்பர்களே... உண்மை. இறைவன் தந்த பத்து கட்டளைகள், இயேசுவின் மழைப் பொழிவில் கூறிய 'பேறுபெற்றோர்' என்ற கூற்றுகள், இயேசு கற்பித்த செபம் அன்னை மரியாவின் புகழ் பாடல்... என்று ஒரு சில பகுதிகளையே என்னால் மனப்பாடமாய்ச் சொல்ல முடியும். அப்படி மனதில் பதிந்த விவிலியப் பகுதிகளில் திருப்பாடல் 23ம் ஒன்று. "ஆண்டவர் என் ஆயன்" என்று முதல் வரிகளில் ஆரம்பித்து, "நானும் ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் நெடுநாள் வாழ்ந்திருப்பேன்" என்ற இறுதி வரிகள் வரை அதிக தடுமாற்றம் இல்லாமல் என்னால் சொல்ல முடியும். அதுவும் இதைப் பாடலாகப் பாடச் சொன்னால், இன்னும் எளிது. எனக்குத் தெரிந்து, ஆங்கிலத்திலும், தமிழிலும் இந்தத் திருப்பாடல் பல கவிதை வரிகளில், இசையோடு வெளியாகி இருக்கிறது. எனக்குத் தெரிந்த பழைய பாடல்கள் இவை:

ஆண்டவர் எனது நல்லாயன், ஆகவே எனக்கொரு குறையுமிராது...
ஆண்டவர் என் ஆயன், ஏது குறை எனக்கு?...
The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want…
My Shepherd is the Lord, nothing indeed shall I want…

எபிரேய மொழியில் திருப்பாடல் நூலை Tehilim அதாவது, புகழ் பாக்கள் என்றும் ஒவ்வொரு திருப்பாடலையும் Mizmorim என்றும் அழைக்கின்றனர். திருப்பாடல் 23 Mizmor Kaf Gimmel என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தத் திருப்பாடல் Adonai Roi lo echsar என்ற வார்த்தைகளுடன் ஆரம்பமாகிறது.

இப்படி ஏறக்குறைய உலகின் எல்லா மொழிகளிலும் திருப்பாடல் 23 கவிதையாக, இசையாக வெளி வந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளது. திருப்பாடல் 23ஐ மையமாக்கி வெளிவந்துள்ள கதைகள், சம்பவங்கள், விளக்கங்கள் பல நூறு உள்ளன. அவைகளில் இந்தக் கதையும் ஒன்று. Shakespeare எழுதிய நாடகங்களின் பல பகுதிகளை மனப்பாடம் செய்து, அவற்றை மக்களுக்கு முன் உணர்வுப் பூர்வமாய் சொல்லி புகழ் பெற்ற கலைஞர் ஒருவர் தன் நிகழ்ச்சியின் முடிவில் எப்போதும் திருப்பாடல் 23ஐ மிக அழகாகச் சொல்லி முடிப்பார். அவர் அப்படி சொல்லி முடித்ததும், கரவொலியில் அந்த அரங்கமே அதிரும். பல சமயங்களில் அந்தத் திருப்பாடலை மட்டும் மீண்டும், மீண்டும் சொல்லச் சொல்லி கூட்டத்தினர் கேட்பர். ஒவ்வொரு முறை அவர் சொல்லும் போதும், மக்கள் மெய் மறந்து அதைக் கேட்டு, கரவொலி எழுப்புவர். ஒரு நாள் அவர் இப்படி அந்தத் திருப்பாடலைச் சொல்லி முடித்தார். வழக்கம் போல் மக்களும் மிகவும் ரசித்து, பரவசமடைந்து, கரவொலி எழுப்பினர்.
அப்போது, அங்கிருந்த வயதான ஒருவர் தானும் அந்தத் திருப்பாடலை மேடையேறிச் சொல்ல அனுமதி கேட்டார். மக்களும், கலைஞரும் தயங்கினர். இருந்தாலும், அவரது வயதுக்கு மதிப்பு கொடுத்து அவருக்கு அனுமதி அளித்தனர். வயதான அவர் மேடையேறி, "ஆண்டவர் என் ஆயன்" என்று ஆரம்பித்து, திருப்பாடலைச் சொல்லி முடித்தார்.
அவர் முடித்ததும், அரங்கில் ஒருவரும் கை தட்டவில்லை. ஆழ்ந்த அமைதி அங்கு நிலவியது. பலரது கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தது. மேடையேறி சொன்னவர் கண்களிலும் கண்ணீர். அரங்கமே, அமைதியில் தியானத்தில் ஆழ்ந்திருந்தது.
இதுவரை பல முறை, பல இடங்களில் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலைச் சொல்லி மக்களிடம் பாராட்டுக்களையும், கரவோலியையும் பெற்ற அந்தக் கலைஞர் முன் வந்தார். அவர் கண்களிலும் கண்ணீர். தொண்டையைச் சரி செய்து கொண்டு, "நான் பல முறை இந்தத் திருப்பாடலைச் சொல்லி உங்களைப் பரவசப்படுத்தி பாராட்டைப் பெற்றிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், அப்போதெல்லாம் நீங்கள் என்னையே நினைக்கும் படி செய்திருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், இவர் இன்று உங்களை எல்லாம் செபிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார். அவரை விட அவர் சொன்ன அந்த ஆண்டவரை நினைக்க வைத்தார். எனக்கும் அவருக்கும் உள்ள அடிப்படை வேறுபாடு... எனக்கு இந்தத் ஆயனைப் பற்றிய திருப்பாடல் தெரியும், இவருக்கு ஆயனான ஆண்டவரைத் தெரியும்."
நமது தேடலில் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலின் ஆயனைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ள முயல்வோம். தினமும் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலை ஒரு முறை வாசித்தால், மனப்பாடமாய்ச் சொன்னால், மனதார செபித்தால்... அறுபுதமான உணர்வுகள் மனதை நிறைக்கும், அற்புதங்கள் வாழ்வில் நிகழும். தொடர்வோம் நம் தேடலை.
