Why to pray? When to pray? Where to pray? What to pray for? How to pray? Questions and more questions about prayer always remain with us. The disciples of Jesus too had their questions about prayer. They were waiting for an opportune moment to clarify them with the Master. Such a moment was not hard to find, since Jesus was often engaged in prayer… any time of the day or night, any place. One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." (Luke 11: 1)
It looks as if Jesus was just waiting for a request like this. He began straightaway. He did not give them a treatise on prayer. He gave them, rather, a lovely prayer, a story and a gentle warning.

“When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be your name…”. These were the opening lines of Jesus’ lesson on prayer. He went on to give them one of the most popular prayers known universally. If the present population of the world is around 7 billion, one can easily guess that at least 3 billion would be able to recite this prayer by heart. I am not only thinking of Christians, but also others who have had the ‘Christian’ influence, say, for instance, those non Christian children who have been educated in Christian schools... Such is the popularity of this prayer. After teaching them this universal prayer, Jesus tells them a parable to illustrate that there is no when-and-where for prayer. Even midnights and closed doors need not deter us from praying… a lovely story! I am sure most of us have heard quite many stories about prayer. I would like to share two stories which are my favourites. I have taken them from http://www.inspirationalstories.com/

Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, "God is great and God is Good. Let us thank Him for the food, and I would even thank you more if mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!"
Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice-cream! Why, I never!"
Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?" As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer." "Really?" my son asked. "Cross my heart."
Then in theatrical whisper he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."
Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes and my soul is good already."

What to ask for in prayer can be a tricky question. Can a person ask God for ice cream? Such doubts would be cleared if one looks at the Lord’s Prayer. There is a petition asking for the Kingdom of God and another petition asking for daily bread. Most of the petitions in this prayer are simple and down-to-earth... Give us food. Give us a heart that forgives. Lead us not into temptations. Deliver us from harm... Unless we become like children, it is hard to pray this way.

The First Reading from Genesis (18: 20-32) deals with another question: how to pray. Abraham holds a tête-à-tête with God. It sounds more like a bargain in a market place… 50, 45, 40… down to 10. Since Abraham was sincere and serious in saving people, God was willing to go the distance with him. I look at this whole episode as one prolonged prayer. It looks as if God was also struggling with Abraham in this ‘prayer’.
Any struggle to establish goodness in human family, whether it takes the obvious form of prayer or not, can be considered a prayer since cries of anguish and sincere desires that rise from the soul are heard by God.

… Then the big night came. With his blue pinewood derby in his hand and pride in his heart, Gilbert and I headed to the big race. Once there, my little one's pride turned to humility. Gilbert's car was obviously the only car made entirely on his own. All the other cars were a father-son partnership, with cool paint jobs and sleek body styles made for speed. A few of the boys giggled as they looked at Gilbert's, lopsided, wobbly, unattractive vehicle…
As the race began it was done in elimination fashion… One by one the cars raced down the finely sanded ramp. Finally it was between Gilbert and the sleekest, fastest looking car there. As the last race was about to begin, my wide eyed, shy eight year old asked if they could stop the race for a minute, because he wanted to pray. The race stopped. Gilbert hit his knees clutching his funny looking block of wood between his hands. With a wrinkled brow he set to converse with his Father. He prayed in earnest for a very long minute and a half. Then he stood, smile on his face and announced, "Okay, I am ready."
As the crowd cheered, a boy named Tommy stood with his father as their car sped down the ramp. Gilbert stood with his Father within his heart and watched his block of wood wobble down the ramp with surprisingly great speed and rushed over the finish line a fraction of a second before Tommy's car. Gilbert leaped into the air with a loud "Thank you" as the crowd roared in approval.
The Scout Master came up to Gilbert with microphone in hand and asked the obvious question, "So you prayed to win, huh, Gilbert?" To which my young son answered, "Oh, no sir. That wouldn't be fair to ask God to help you beat someone else. I just asked Him to make it so I don't cry when I lose."
Children seem to have a wisdom far beyond us. Gilbert didn't ask God to win the race, he didn't ask God to fix the outcome, Gilbert asked God to give him strength in the outcome.

Gilbert, the eight year old, knew what to expect from his Father in heaven. Probably, many of us do not have this clarity. Hence, Jesus gives us the final words of today’s Gospel:
"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11: 9-13)

எப்போது செபிப்பது? எப்படி செபிப்பது? எங்கே எதற்காக ஏன் செபிப்பது?... இப்படி செபம் குறித்த பல கேள்விகள் நம்மில் அடிக்கடி எழுகின்றன. சீடர்களுக்கும் இந்த கேள்விகள் எழுந்தன. இயேசுவிடம் கேட்க அவர்களுக்கு ஆவல். நல்ல தருணத்திற்காகக் காத்திருந்தனர். அன்று இயேசு ஓரிடத்தில் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அது முடிந்ததும் அவருடைய சீடர்களுள் ஒருவர் அவரை நோக்கி, “ஆண்டவரே, யோவான் தம் சீடருக்கு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டக் கற்றுக் கொடுத்ததுபோல் எங்களுக்கும் கற்றுக்கொடும்” என்றார். (லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 11: 1) இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இப்படி ஆரம்பமாகிறது.
இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு விண்ணப்பத்திற்குக் காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தவரைப் போல் இயேசு செபிப்பது பற்றிய அழகான பாடத்தை உடனேச் சொல்லித் தந்தார். செபத்தைப் பற்றிய நீண்ட, அறிவுப்பூர்வமான விளக்கங்களை இயேசு சொல்லவில்லை. அவர் சொல்லித் தந்ததெல்லாம் ஒரு செபம், ஒரு கதை, ஒரு நம்பிக்கைக் கூற்று, ஓர் எச்சரிக்கை.
"பரலோகத்திலிருக்கிற எங்கள் பிதாவே" என்று இயேசு சொல்லித் தந்த அந்த செபம் உலகப் புகழ்பெற்றதொரு செபம். ‘உலகச் செபங்கள்’ (Universal Prayers) என்று தகவல்களைத் தேடினால், இந்தச் செபம் கட்டாயம் முதன்மை இடம் பிடிக்கும். கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்த இந்த செபம், கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் நடத்தும் பள்ளிகளில் பயிலும் மற்றவர்கள் மனதிலும் ஆழமாய் பதிந்திருக்கும். உலகின் மக்கள் தொகை 700 கோடியை எட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த வேளையில், அவர்களில் கட்டாயம் 300 கோடி மக்களுக்காகிலும் இந்த செபம் தெரிந்திருக்க வாய்ப்புக்கள் அதிகம்.

அழகிய இந்த செபத்தைச் சொல்லித்தந்த இயேசு, அதைத் தொடர்ந்து கதை ஒன்று சொன்னார். அவர் சொன்னக் கதையில், செபிப்பதற்கு நேரம், காலம், வழி முறைகள் இவைகளெல்லாம் கிடையாது என்பதை மறைமுகமாக வலியுறுத்தினார். மூடிய கதவுகள், நள்ளிரவு... எதுவும் செபத்திற்குத் தடையாக இருக்க முடியாது என்று தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.
செபத்தின் தேவை, வலிமை இவைகளைக் கூறும் அறுபுதமான கதைகள் பல உண்டு. அவைகளில் எனக்கு அதிகம் பிடித்த இரு கதைகளை உங்களோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன். இரண்டிலும் குழந்தைகள் செபிக்கிறார்கள். நமக்குச் செபிக்கக் கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள்.

ஒரு தாய் தன் குழந்தைகளுடன் உணவு விடுதிக்குச் சென்றார். சாப்பிடும் முன் அவர்களது ஆறு வயது சிறுவன், தான் செபிக்க விரும்புவதாகச் சொன்னான். பின் கண்களை மூடி, செபத்தை ஆரம்பித்தான். "இறைவா, நீர் நல்லவர், எல்லாம் வல்லவர். நீர் எங்களுக்குத் தரப்போகும் உணவுக்காக நன்றி. உணவுக்குப் பின் அம்மா வாங்கித் தரப்போகும் ஐஸ் க்ரீமுக்கு இன்னும் அதிக நன்றி... ஆமென்." என்று செபித்து முடித்தான். ஐஸ் க்ரீம் கிடைக்க வேண்டுமென்ற ஆர்வத்தில் அவன் சொன்ன செபம் கொஞ்சம் சப்தமாய் ஒலித்ததால், அந்த உணவு விடுதியில் மற்ற மேசைகளில் அமர்ந்திருந்தவர்களும் இந்த செபத்தைக் கேட்டனர். ரசித்தனர். அடுத்த மேசையில் சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு வயதான பெண், "ஹும்... இந்த காலத்துப் பிள்ளைங்களுக்குச் செபம் சொல்லக் கூடத் தெரியவில்லை. கடவுளிடம் ஐஸ் க்ரீம் கேட்டு ஒரு செபமா?" என்று சலித்துக் கொண்டார். இதைக் கேட்டதும், செபம் சொன்னக் குழந்தையின் முகம் வாடியது. "அம்மா, நான் சொன்ன செபம் தப்பாம்மா? கடவுள் என் மேல கோபப்படுவாரா?" என்று கண்களில் நீர் மல்கக் கேட்டான். அம்மா அவனை அணைத்து, "அப்படியெல்லாம் ஒன்றுமில்லை, கண்ணா." என்று தேற்ற முயன்றார். மற்றொரு மேசையிலிருந்து இன்னொரு வயதானப் பெண்மணி அந்தக் குழந்தையிடம் வந்து, கண்களைச் சிமிட்டி, "நான் கேட்ட செபங்களிலேயே இதுதான் ரொம்ப நல்ல செபம்." என்றார். பின்னர், தன் குரலைத் தாழ்த்தி, அந்தக் குழந்தையிடம், "பாவம், அந்தப் பாட்டி. அவர் கடவுளிடம் இதுவரை ஐஸ் க்ரீமே கேட்டதில்லை என்று நினைக்கிறேன். அப்பப்ப கடவுளிடம் ஐஸ் க்ரீம் கேட்டு வாங்கி சாப்பிடுவது ரொம்ப நல்லது." என்று சொல்லிச் சென்றார்.
சிறுவன் முகம் மலர்ந்தான். தன் உணவை முடித்தான். அவன் வேண்டிக் கொண்டதைப் போலவே, உணவு முடிந்ததும், அம்மா ஐஸ் க்ரீம் வாங்கித் தந்தார்கள். சிறுவன் அந்த ஐஸ் க்ரீம் கிண்ணத்தை வாங்கியதும், தன் செபத்தைக் குறை கூறிய அந்தப் பாட்டி இருந்த மேசைக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்றான். பெரிய புன்முறுவலுடன், "பாட்டி, இது உங்களுக்கு. இதைச் சாப்பிட்டால், மனசு நல்லா ஆயிடும்." என்று சொல்லி பாட்டிக்கு முன் ஐஸ் க்ரீமை வைத்து விட்டுத் திரும்பி வந்தான். அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் எல்லாரும் கைதட்டி மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

எதைப் பற்றியும் செபிக்கலாம், கடவுளிடம் எதையும் கேட்கலாம் என்று சொல்லித் தருவதற்குக் குழந்தைகளை விட சிறந்த ஆசிரியர்கள் இருக்க முடியாது. ஐஸ் க்ரீம் வேண்டும் என்ற சில்லறைத் தனமான வேண்டுதல்களையும் கேட்கலாம். உலகில் நீதியும், அமைதியும் நிலவ வேண்டும் என்ற பெரும் வேண்டுதல்களையும் கேட்கலாம்.
இயேசு சொல்லித் தந்த செபத்தைக் கொஞ்சம் ஆராய்ந்தால், இந்த உண்மை தெரியும். கடவுளின் அரசு வர வேண்டும் என்ற பெரியதொரு கனவையும், எங்கள் அனுதின உணவைத் தாரும் என்ற மிகச் சாதாரணமான விண்ணப்பத்தையும் இந்த செபம் கூறுகிறது. எங்களுக்கு உணவைத் தாரும், எங்கள் குற்றங்களை மன்னித்தருளும், மன்னிப்பது எப்படி என்று சொல்லித் தாரும், சோதனைகள், தீமைகள் இவைகளிலிருந்து காத்தருளும் ... இப்படி, இயேசுவின் செபத்தில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள பல விண்ணப்பங்கள் மிக, மிக எளிமையான, ஒவ்வொருவர் வாழ்க்கைக்கும் அடிப்படையில் தேவையான விண்ணப்பங்கள். குழந்தை மனம் கொண்டு செபிக்கும் போது, அது இறைமகன் இயேசு சொல்லித்தந்த செபத்தைப் போல் இருக்கும்.

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் (தொடக்க நூல் 18: 20-32) செபத்தின் மற்றொரு அம்சத்தை உணர்த்துகிறது. செபம் என்பது கடவுளுடன் கொள்ளும் உரையாடல். சில சமயங்களில் இந்த உரையாடல் உரசலாகி, உஷ்ணமாகி, கடவுளுடன் எழும் வாக்குவாதமாகவும் மாறும். ஒரு நகரத்தைக் காப்பாற்ற ஆபிரகாம் இறைவனுடன் பேரம் பேசும் இந்த முயற்சி ஒரு செபம். கடவுள் மட்டில் ஆபிரகாமுக்குப் பாசமும் உண்டு, பயமும் உண்டு. எனவே, 50 பேர் இருந்தால் இந்த நகரைக் காப்பாற்றுவீர்களா? என்று ஆரம்பித்து, 45, 40 பேர் என்று படிப்படியாகக் குறைத்து, இறுதியில் 10 பேர் என்ற அளவுக்குக் கடவுளை இழுத்து வருகிறார் ஆபிரகாம். சந்தையில் நடக்கும் பேரம் போல இது தெரிந்தாலும், ஒரு நகரைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும் என்ற ஆபிரகாமின் ஆதங்கம் இதை ஒரு செபமாக மாற்றுகிறது. நல்லது ஒன்று நடக்க வேண்டுமென ஆபிரகாமுடன் சேர்ந்து கடவுளும் போராடுவது இந்த வாசகத்தில் அழகாக வெளிப்படுகிறது. அன்பர்களே, தொடக்க நூல் 18: 20-32ல் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த சம்பவத்தை இன்று ஒருமுறை வாசித்துப் பாருங்கள். பயன் பெறுவீர்கள்.

செபத்தையும் குழந்தையையும் இணைத்துச் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ள மற்றொரு கதை இதோ. பள்ளிச் சிறுவர்கள் மத்தியில் போட்டி ஒன்று நடைபெற்றது. அவரவர் வீட்டில் செய்த கார் பொம்மைகளில் எந்தக் கார் அதிக வேகமாகச் செல்லக்கூடியது என்பதைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் போட்டி. மற்ற சிறுவர்களின் வீடுகளில் அந்தந்த சிறுவர்களுடன் பெற்றோரும் சேர்ந்து இந்த முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டதால், அவர்கள் கொண்டு வந்திருந்த கார் பொம்மைகள் மிக அழகாக இருந்தன. கில்பர்ட் என்ற சிறுவனின் தந்தைக்கு இது போன்ற விளையாட்டுகளில், கில்பர்ட்டின் மகிழ்வில் அக்கறை இல்லை. எனவே, கில்பர்ட் அவனாகவே தனித்து அந்தக் காரை வடிவமைத்தான்.
போட்டிக்கு வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த எல்லாக் கார் பொம்மைகளிலும் பார்க்கப் பரிதாபமாய் இருந்தது கில்பர்ட்டின் கார் தான். அவன் காரைப் பார்த்த மற்ற குழந்தைகள் கேலி செய்தனர். போட்டி ஆரம்பமாகுமுன், திடீரென கில்பர்ட் முழந்தாள் படியிட்டான். தன் காரைக் கையில் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, கண்களை மூடி செபித்தான். பின்னர் அந்தக் காரை பந்தயத்தில் வைத்தான். பந்தயத்தில் கில்பர்ட் கார் வென்றது. இதைக் கண்டு எல்லாருக்கும் ஆச்சரியம்.
ஆசிரியர் உடனே, கில்பர்டிடம் வந்தார்... "நீ வெற்றி பெற வேண்டுமென செபித்ததற்கு நல்ல பலன் கிடைத்தது." என்று புகழ்ந்தார். "நான் வெற்றி பெறுவதற்கு வேண்டவில்லை சார்." என்று அவன் சொன்னதும், அனைவரும் இன்னும் ஆச்சரியத்துடன், அமைதியாய் அவனைப் பார்த்தனர். "மற்றவர்களைத் தோற்கடிக்க வேண்டுமென்று கடவுளிடம் வேண்டுவது சரியான செபம் அல்ல." என்றான் கில்பர்ட் அழுத்தந்திருத்தமாய். "பின் எதற்காக வேண்டினாய்?" என்று ஆசிரியர் கேட்டதும், கில்பர்ட், "'இந்தப் போட்டியின் முடிவில் நான் தோற்றுவிட்டால், என்னை அழாமல் காப்பாற்றும் இறைவா' என்று தான் வேண்டிக் கொண்டேன்." என்று சொன்னான்.

வெற்றி, தோல்வியை நிர்ணயிக்கக் கடவுளை நிர்ப்பந்திக்கும் செபங்களை விட, வெற்றி, தோல்விகளைச் சந்திக்கும் மனப்பக்குவம் வேண்டி செபிப்பது மிகவும் சிறந்தது. கடவுளுக்குத் தெரியாதா நமக்கு எது நல்லது என்று? கில்பர்ட் சொல்லித் தரும் இந்தப் பாடம் அற்புதமான பாடம். "என் தோள்களிலிருந்து சுமைகளை எடுத்துவிடும் என்று நான் இறைவனை வேண்டவில்லை, ஆனால், அந்தச் சுமைகளைத் தாங்கும் வண்ணம் என் தோள்களுக்கு வலிமையைத் தாரும் என்று வேண்டினேன்." இப்படி ஒரு வாக்கியம் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட சுவரொட்டி என் நினைவுக்கு இப்போது வருகிறது.

குழந்தை மனதை வளர்த்துக் கொண்டால், செபம் எளிதாகும். குழந்தைகளைப் போல் நம்மை இயேசு மாறச் சொன்னதற்கு இதுவும் ஒரு காரணம். இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் குழந்தை, தந்தை உறவைப் பற்றியும், விண்ணகத் தந்தையைப் பற்றியும் ஒரு தெளிவை எடுத்துச் சொல்லி, வேண்டுவது எப்படி என்ற தன் பாடங்களை நிறைவு செய்கிறார். நாமும் இந்தப் பாடங்களுடன் நம் சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்.

லூக்கா 11: 9-13
மேலும் நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: கேளுங்கள், உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; தேடுங்கள், நீங்கள் கண்டடைவீர்கள்; தட்டுங்கள் உங்களுக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். ஏனெனில் கேட்போர் எல்லாரும் பெற்றுக்கொள்கின்றனர்; தேடுவோர் கண்டடைகின்றனர்; தட்டுவோருக்குத் திறக்கப்படும். பிள்ளை மீனைக் கேட்டால் உங்களுள் எந்தத் தந்தையாவது மீனுக்குப் பதிலாகப் பாம்பைக் கொடுப்பாரா? முட்டையைக் கேட்டால் அவர் தேளைக் கொடுப்பாரா? தீயோர்களாகிய நீங்களே உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு நற்கொடைகள் அளிக்க அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்கள். அப்படியானால் விண்ணகத் தந்தை தம்மிடம் கேட்போருக்குத் தூய ஆவியைக் கொடுப்பது எத்துணை உறுதி!
