GOD WILL GRAPPLE ALONG WITH US… நம்முடன் சேர்ந்து போராடும் கடவுள்

Recently I came across the information about a book written by George Lucius Salton, a Polish Jew now settled in the U.S. He was 11 years old when Poland was taken over by the Germans. He was separated from his parents and elder brother. He survived the horrors of ten concentration camps. Of the 500 prisoners of the Nazis who marched through the streets of Colmar in the spring of 1944, just fifty were alive one year later when the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army liberated the Wobbelin concentration camp on the afternoon of May 2, 1945. "I felt something stir deep within my soul. It was my true self, the one who had stayed deep within and had not forgotten how to love and how to cry, the one who had chosen life and was still standing when the last roll call ended" writes Salton in his book. This book was published in 2002. The title of this book: The 23rd Psalm: A Holocaust Memoir.
I was really curious as to why the author gave this title to his book. I tried getting the information from the web, but was not successful. Salton must have survived the horrors of his youth with the help of Psalm 23. Not only George Salton. Down the centuries millions must have surely been inspired by Psalm 23 in various ways. Last week I mentioned the book (The Lord is my Shepherd - Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm) written by Harold Kushner, the Jewish Rabbi, who had helped so many of his congregation as well as himself with the help of this Psalm. Why has this Psalm appealed to so many millions? Because, it speaks of a simple truth – namely, that this world, filled with so many problems, is filled much more with God’s presence. Kushner talks of this presence in a far better way. Here are some thoughts that Kushner shared in an interview with Beliefnet on this Psalm.

God's promise was never that life would be fair. God's promise was that when we have to confront the unfairness of life, we will be able to handle it because we won't do it alone--He'll be with us…I realized that's the 23rd Psalm. "I will fear no evil for thou art with me."

For the thirty years I was a congregational rabbi, I always used it at funerals, at memorial services, at unveilings. It has this magical power to comfort people. I don't know how many people turned to it personally privately, but I suspect it was used at a lot of funerals and memorial services in the wake of 9/11, Christian and Jewish alike.

Often tragedies like September 11th or the death of a family member make people lose faith in God. How can this psalm help them? (Question from Beliefnet)

Sometimes people lose faith. But sometimes people lose faith in a certain childish conception of God and acquire a more mature conception of God. Paul Tillich once said, "When I was 17 I believed in God. Now that I'm 70 I still believe in God, but not the same God." A naïve conception of God is a God who is always there to protect us. We replace it with a more realistic understanding of a God who is there to help us through the difficult times in our lives.
Notice the psalmist doesn't say, "I will fear no evil because nothing bad ever happens in the world." He says, "I will fear no evil because it doesn't scare me because God is with me."

I was fortunate to come across another information about a DVD released in 2006. The title of this DVD caught my attention: You Don’t Have to be Afraid Anymore: Reflections on Psalm 23 For People with Cancer Prepared by Dr. Ken Curtis.

Why Psalm 23?
Words matter! Think of the affirming power of the words “I love you.” Or the paralyzing effect on a child who is told repeatedly “you are stupid.”
As we think of the power of words to affect us we stand back in amazement at the words of the 23rd psalm. What is it about this brief and simple affirmation that has maintained its potency in such a unique way some 3,000 years after it was first uttered? How many other words can you think of that have a similar longevity? Why have these words so easily crossed centuries and cultures? Why have these words so often been made a centrepiece for some of life’s most critical moments—at the personal, community and national levels?
There is no simple answer to such questions. It is something we intuitively grasp more than something we can analyze. But minimally we can say this: The 23rd psalm reminds us that life inevitably has its uncertainties, reversals and fears. There are times when our resources, wisdom and strength are simply inadequate. In such times we need not despair but can move forward in confidence that we are not alone in this universe. There is One with us, who not only knows us, but cares for us and guides us. There is a way through our difficulties that will bring us past the trauma of the moment. That being so, we can pause, take a deep breath, remind ourselves of the bigger picture and face our situation with confidence, courage, trust and hope.

The central theme that God accompanies all of us through the unfair situations of life is the main reason why this Psalm has been such an inspiration to millions over all these centuries. We shall continue to draw inspiration from this great Psalm.

1942ல் போலந்து நாட்டில், 14 வயது சிறுவனான George Lucius Saltonம் அவனது அண்ணனும் சித்ரவதை முகாமுக்குக் கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டனர். அவர்களது பெற்றோர் ஏற்கனவே கைது செய்யப்பட்டு வெவ்வேறு முகாம்களில் அடைபட்டிருந்தனர். ஜார்ஜும் அவனது அண்ணனும் பிரிக்கப்பட்டனர். ஜார்ஜ் தன் அண்ணனையும், பெற்றோரையும் அதற்குப் பின் பார்க்கவில்லை. ஜார்ஜ் பத்து நாசி வதை முகாம்களில் சித்ரவதைகளை அனுபவித்தார். இறுதியில் 1945 மே மாதம் 2ம் நாள் விடுதலை அடைந்தார்.
1944ல் இறுதி வதை முகாமுக்கு 500 பேர் அளவில் எடுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்ட இளைஞர்களில் 50 பேர் மட்டுமே எஞ்சியிருந்தனர் என்று குறிப்பிடுகிறார் ஜார்ஜ். விடுதலை நாளன்று, குற்றுயிரும், குலையுயிருமாய் இருந்த அந்த இளைஞர்களை அமெரிக்க வீரர்கள் பெயர் சொல்லி அழைத்து, கணக்கெடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தனர். அப்போது, ஜார்ஜ் தன் மனதில் எழுந்தவைகளை இப்படி எழுதுகிறார்:
"ஜார்ஜ் என்று என் பெயரைச் சொல்லி அவர்கள் அழைத்தபோது, என் ஆழ்மனதில் ஏதோ ஒன்று சிலிர்த்தெழுந்தது. அது ‘நான்’ என்ற என் உண்மை வடிவம். இந்த 'நான்' கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளாய், 36 மாதங்களாய் எனக்குள் புதைந்திருந்தது, மறக்கப்படவில்லை. இந்த 'நான்' அன்பு செய்யவும், அழவும் தெரிந்த ஓர் உண்மை. இந்த 'நான்' வாழ்வதற்கு தீர்மானித்த ஓர் உண்மை. எனவேதான் இத்தனை மாதங்கள் கழித்து பெயர் சொல்லி அழைத்ததும் எழுந்து நிற்கிறேன்."
இப்படி இவர் எழுதியிருப்பது ஓர் அழகான புத்தகத்தில். 2002ம் ஆண்டு வெளியான இந்தப் புத்தகத்தின் தலைப்பு என்ன தெரியுமா? "23ம் திருப்பாடல்: ஒரு தகனப் பலியின் நினைவுகள்" (The 23rd Psalm: A Holocaust Memoir). ஏறத்தாழ நாசி வதை முகாம்கள் முடிந்து 60 ஆண்டுகள் சென்று வெளியாகி உள்ள இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை எழுதிய ஜார்ஜைப் போல இன்னும் ஆயிரமாயிரம் பேர் உடலளவில் உயிரோடு வெளிவந்தது மட்டுமல்ல, அதற்கும் மேலாக, நம்பிக்கை நிறைந்த மனிதப் பிறவிகளாக வதை முகாம்களிலிருந்து வெளிவந்ததற்குத் திருப்பாடல் 23ம் ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம் என்று உலகம் முழுவதும் அறிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.
நம்பிக்கை எனும் அமுதை கடந்த 3000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக அள்ளி அள்ளி வழங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஓர் அமுத சுரபி "ஆண்டவர் என் ஆயர்" என்ற திருப்பாடல் 23 என்று சொன்னால், முற்றிலும் அது உண்மை. சென்ற வாரம் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலைக் குறித்த நம் விவிலியத் தேடலை ஆரம்பித்தோம். திருப்பாடல் 23 எனக்குப் பிடித்த பாடல் என்று சென்ற வாரம் நான் ஆரம்பித்த சிந்தனைகளைக் கேட்டு ஒரு நேயர் "எனக்கும் இந்தத் திருப்பாடல் மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். ஏன்? இன்னும் சொல்லப்போனால், விவிலியத்தில் நான் அடிக்கடி படிக்கும், அல்லது மனப்பாடமாய்ச் சொல்லும் பகுதி திருப்பாடல் 23 தான்." என்று மின்னஞ்சலில் எழுதியிருந்தார்.
கவலைகள், மனவலிகள் என்று நம்மை இருள் சூழும் நேரங்களிலும், நிறைவு, நன்றி என்று நம் மனதில் ஒளி எழும் நேரங்களிலும் இந்தத் திருப்பாடலை நாம் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். மற்ற 149 திருப்பாடல்களை விட, விவிலியத்தின் பிற பகுதிகளை விட திருப்பாடல் 23ஐ பலரும் பயன்படுத்துவதற்கு காரணம் என்ன?
இந்தத் திருப்பாடல் நாம் எல்லாரும் எளிதில் ஏற்கக்கூடிய ஒர் உண்மையைத் தன் ஆறு திருவசனங்களில் சொல்கிறது. அதனால்தான் இது இவ்வளவு பயன்படுகிறது. என்ன உண்மை இது?
உலகில் நடக்கும் அநீதிகள், அவலங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் நாம் காணும் போது, அல்லது அந்தக் கொடுமைகள் நம் வாழ்வைத் தாக்கும்போது, "இறைவா நீ எங்கிருக்கிறாய்? ஏன் என்னை இந்த இருளில் தள்ளிவிட்டாய்?" என்று நம் மனதில் கேள்விகள் எழும் போது, கடவுளின் பதில் இப்படி கேட்கலாம்:
“இந்த உலகம் நீதியாக, அமைதியாக, பிரச்சனைகள் இன்றி இருக்கும் என்று நான் வாக்குறுதி தரவில்லை. மாறாக, பிரச்சனைகளை நீ சந்திக்கும் போது நான் உன்னோடு இருப்பேன் என்றுதான் நான் உறுதி கூறியுள்ளேன்.” இந்த எண்ணத்தை ஆழமாகச் சொல்கிறது இந்தத் திருப்பாடல்.
"நான் ஏழு வயதில், கடவுளை நம்பினேன். இப்போது எழுபது வயதிலும் கடவுளை நம்புகிறேன். ஆனால், அந்தக் கடவுளுக்கும் இந்தக் கடவுளுக்கும் வேறுபாடு உள்ளது." இப்படிச் சொன்னவர் Paul Tillich என்ற இறையியல் வல்லுநர். நம் எல்லாருக்கும் இந்த அனுபவம் இருக்கின்றது, உண்மைதானே? ஏழு வயதுக்கும் எழுபது வயதுக்கும் இடையே, கடவுள் மாறவில்லை. கடவுளைப் பற்றிய நம் எண்ணங்கள் வளர்ந்துள்ளன. அப்படி வளராமல் இருந்தால் சில சமயம் பிரச்சனைகளைச் சந்திக்க வேண்டியிருக்கும்.
காக்கும் கடவுள் என்பது கடவுளின் குணங்களில் ஒன்று. இந்த ஒரே ஒரு குணத்தை மட்டுமே கடவுளின் இலக்கணமாக வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் நினைத்து வாழ்வது ஒரு வகையில் குழந்தைத் தனம். காக்கும் கடவுள் என்ற அந்த எண்ணத்திலிருந்து நாம் வளர மறுத்தால், துன்பங்கள் வரும் போது, காக்கும் கடவுள் எங்கே என்று தேடுவோம். நாம் தேடும் அந்தக் கடவுள் வராவிட்டால், காக்கும் கடவுள் மீது நம் நம்பிக்கை காணாமல் போய்விடும்.
துன்பங்கள் வரும் போது, நம்முடன் துணைவந்து, நம்முடன் போராடி, பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்ப்பதற்கு உதவும் கடவுள் எதார்த்தமான உண்மையான கடவுள். இந்தக் கடவுளைப் புரிந்துக் கொள்வதற்கு, ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதற்குத் திருப்பாடல் 23 உதவியாக இருக்கும்.
“நீர் என்னோடு இருப்பதால், உலகில் எத்தீங்கும் நிகழாது” என்று திருப்பாடலின் ஆசிரியர் கூறவில்லை. அவர் சொல்வதெல்லாம் இதுவே: “நீர் என்னோடு இருப்பதால் எத்தீங்கிற்கும் அஞ்சிடேன்” (திருப்பாடல் 23: 4)
தீமைகள், துன்பங்கள் இல்லாத உலகம் என்ற உறுதியைவிட அந்தத் துன்பங்களில் கடவுளின் துணை உண்டு என்ற உறுதியைத் திருப்பாடல் 23 வழங்குவதாலேயே இது இவ்வளவு தூரம் பயன் படுத்தப் படுகிறது. புகழும் பெற்றுள்ளது. நாடு விட்டு நாடு அடிமைகளாக விரட்டப்பட்டு வாழ்ந்து வந்த இஸ்ராயல் மக்கள் மத்தியில் தலைமுறை, தலைமுறையாய்ச் சொல்லித் தரப்பட்ட பல வாழ்க்கைப் பாடங்களின் சாராம்சம் இந்தத் திருப்பாடல். திருப்பாடல் 23 சொல்லித்தரும் இந்த வாழ்க்கைப் பாடங்களின் உதவியோடு இந்த உலகைப் பார்க்கும் போது, உலகைப் பற்றிய பல பயங்கள் குறையும். ஏனெனில் இறைவன் நம்மோடு நடந்து வருகிறார்.

Albert Einstein நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரிந்த ஓர் அறிவியல் மேதை. அவர் இந்த உலகைப் பற்றிய பல விளக்கங்களைத் தந்தவர். ஆனால், இந்த உலகைப் பற்றிய ஒரு சில கேள்விகளுக்கு விளக்கங்களைத் தன்னால் தர முடியவில்லை என்பதை ஒத்துக் கொண்டார். "உலகின் வயது, அதன் சுற்றளவு, பரப்பளவு, எடை, எந்தெந்த சக்திகள் உலகை இயக்குகின்றன என்று இந்த உலகைப் பற்றிய பல அறிவியல் உண்மைகளைத் துல்லியமாக அளந்து சொல்லிவிடலாம். ஆனால், உலகைப் பற்றிய ஒரு முக்கியமான கேள்விக்கு அறிவியல் பதில் சொல்ல முடியாது... மனித குலத்தின் நம்பிக்கைகளை, கனவுகளை வளர்க்கும் வண்ணம் இந்த உலகம் அன்பாய், நட்பாய் இருக்குமா? என்ற இந்தக் கேள்விக்கு அறிவியல் பதில் சொல்ல முடியாது." என்று சொன்னார் Albert Einstein.
அறிவியலால் சொல்ல முடியாத இந்தக் கேள்விக்குத் திருப்பாடல் 23 பெருமளவு பதில் சொல்கிறது. இந்த உலகைத் தாண்டி அடுத்த உலகில் எல்லாம் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என்ற வாக்குறுதியைத் தரவில்லை 23ம் திருப்பாடல். மாறாக, இந்த உலகத்திலேயே வாழ்வு நன்றாக அமையும் என்பதைச் சொல்கிறது. அனைத்தும் நல்லதாய், தலை சிறந்ததாய் இயங்கும் உலகமல்ல நாம் வாழும் உலகம். ஆனால், இது இறைவன் நம்மோடு வாழும் உலகம்; அதனால், இது நல்ல உலகம் என்பதை ஆழமாய் நாம் உணர வைக்கிறது திருப்பாடல் 23.

இந்த ஆவணப் படத்தின் இறுதியில் வரும் மன்றாட்டின் ஒரு பகுதியை நமது இன்றையத் தேடலின் இறுதி செபமாக்குவோம்:
“இறைவா, உமது அழகான உலகில் மதிப்பிற்குரிய விருந்தாளியாக எனக்கு இன்னும் ஒரு நாளை அளித்திருக்கிறீர். அதற்கு உமக்கு நன்றி. நல்லதொரு ஆயனாக என்னைத் தொடர்ந்து வழிநடத்தும் உமது அன்புக்கு நன்றி. என் தேவைகளை எல்லாம் எனக்கு முன்னே நீர் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர். அதற்கும் நன்றி, இறைவா.”
Thank you, O God, that I have been given another day as an honored guest on your good earth. I also give thanks for a Lord who leads me and loves me.
Thank you for the security of knowing the shepherd provides, and this day and in the future I will always have what I really need…
