Last Sunday, the First Sunday of Lent, we were given the privilege of seeing a very private experience of Jesus, probably one of the most vulnerable moments of his life… the temptations. Today, the Second Sunday of Lent, gives us the opportunity to see him in one of his most glorious moments… the transfiguration. I would like to begin this reflection with a class on human anatomy.
Human skin is an amazing organ -- protective, waterproof, and exceedingly useful. It's also constantly changing and regenerating itself… Your skin is composed of several layers… It takes roughly one month for new cells to get all the way to the top layer, meaning the skin you have a month from today will be completely new compared to the skin you have now.

Quite a few gels and lotions are advertised with false claims that they can keep my skin fresh, young, ageless and changeless! Blatant lie! No lotion can keep our skin changeless even for an hour. Here are some ‘enlightening’ facts about our skin:
Scientists estimate that the human body is made up of around 10 trillion cells in total. Your skin makes up about 16 percent of your body weight, which means you have roughly 1.6 trillion skin cells [source: BBC]. Of course, this estimate can vary tremendously according to a person's size. The important thing is that you have a lot of skin cells. Of those billions of skin cells, between 30,000 and 40,000 of them fall off every hour. Over a 24-hour period, you lose almost a million skin cells [source: Boston Globe]… In other words, your house is filled with former bits of yourself. In one year, you'll shed more than 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) of dead skin.

Change is an essential part of human beings as well as other living forms. When change ends, we usually presume that life has ended. But, even after death, change (we call it decay) takes place. We are invited to think of this most common phenomenon of human beings on the II Sunday of Lent when we think of change – change of place for Abram, and the transfiguration of Jesus.
Change can happen in bits and pieces, as in the case of our skin, or in sudden moment as it happened on 11th March in Japan. Since we are reflecting on change, we shall in a special way pray for the Japanese people that they recover from this sudden, tragic change and its consequences soon.
Last week we reflected that everyone born will have to face temptations. This week we reflect on another common human phenomenon – CHANGE! Change is a key theme during the Lenten season - change of heart, change of our lifestyle. Most of us would tend to believe that when our surrounding changes we also change. On deeper analysis, we can see that radical, lasting changes can begin mostly from within. Here is a story from the master storyteller Fr Anthony de Mello in his famous book ‘The Song of the Bird’:
CHANGE THE WORLD BY CHANGING ME
The Sufi Bayazid says this about himself; “I was a revolutionary when I was young and my prayer to God was: ‘Lord, give me the energy to change the world.’”
“As I approached middle age and realized that half my life was gone without my changing a single soul, I changed my prayer to: ‘Lord, give me the grace to change all those who come in contact with me. Just my family and friends, and I shall be content,’”
“Now that I am an old man and my days are numbered, my one prayer is, ‘Lord, give me the grace to change myself.’ If I had prayed for this right from the start I should not have wasted my life.”

The first reading from the Book of Genesis talks of the baby steps Abram took in order to be changed to Abraham. God invites Abram to leave his familiar surroundings into the unknown, trusting in God alone. Not a great deal, one would say, if this were to happen when a person was in the prime of life. But, when Abram was called for this adventure he was 75 years old. Baby steps at the age of 75? Here is this invitation from God:
Genesis 12: 1-4
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.
When I read this passage, my mind instinctively turned to many senior persons who, in a way, are ‘forced’ to take the leap into the unknown. I am thinking of parents who have to shift their familiar surroundings in order to be with their children who have settled down in another country. Spare a moment to pray for them. God promised to Abram: “I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing… and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” May senior persons who have to face the tough decision of uprooting and planting themselves in unfamiliar circumstances be filled with God’s blessings and become a blessing to others!
Change that begins from within can transform people and transform the world around them. This change is more than helped by true love. Here is another story from ‘The Song of the Bird’ that ties up change and love of God quite neatly:
DON’T CHANGE
I was a neurotic for years. Anxious, depressed, selfish. And everyone kept telling me to change.
And I resented them, and agreed with them, and wanted to change, but simply couldn’t, no matter how I tried. What hurt the most was that, like the others, my closest friend kept urging me tochange. So I felt powerless and trapped.
One day he said “Don’t change. I love you as you are.”
Those words were music to my ears: “Don’t change. Don’t change. Don’t change... I love you as you are.”
I relaxed. I came alive. And, suddenly, I changed!
Now I know that I couldn’t really change till I found someone to love me whether I changed or not.
Is this how you love me, God?

In the Transfiguration event given in Matthew’s Gospel, (Matthew 17: 1-9) we see this transforming love of God in the most endearing affirmation: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Mt. 17:5).
Dear friends, this Sunday we pray for the following intentions:
That the people of Japan who have been devastated by the changes in nature as well as their own invention – the atomic energy – may come out of this crisis with God’s grace…
That seniors who are forced to change from familiar surroundings to strange places may be blessed by God abundantly and thus become a blessing themselves…
That we learn deeper lessons of ‘change’ that is an inevitable part of our human experience…

ஓர் உயிரியல் பாடத்துடன் நம் ஞாயிறு சிந்தனைகளை இன்று ஆரம்பிப்போம். நமது உடலில் பொதுவாக 10 இலட்சம் கோடி செல்கள் (10 trillion cells) உள்ளன. அவற்றில் 16 விழுக்காடு, அதாவது, ஒரு இலட்சத்து 60 ஆயிரம் கோடி செல்கள் நமது தோல் பகுதியாக உள்ளன. இவற்றில் ஏறத்தாழ 40,000 செல்கள் ஒவ்வொரு மணி நேரமும் இறந்து, புது செல்கள் உருவாகின்றன.
உங்கள் சருமத்தை இளமை மாறாமல் அதே நிலையில் வைத்திருக்க எங்கள் கம்பெனியின் 'க்ரீமை'ப் பயன்படுத்துங்கள் என்று சொல்லும் அனைத்து விளம்பரங்களும் அப்பட்டமான பொய். உலகின் எந்த ஒரு ‘க்ரீமு’ம் நமது தோலை ஒரு நாள் கூட மாறாமல் வைத்திருக்க முடியாது. ஒரு நாளைக்கு நாம் 10 லட்சம் செல்களை இழக்கிறோம், உருவாக்குகிறோம். நமது தோலிலிருந்து இறந்து விழும் செல்கள் நுண்ணிய தூசி போன்ற குப்பையாக நமது வீடுகளில் சேகரிக்கப்படுகின்றன. எனவே, எதோ ஒரு 'க்ரீம்' நமது தோலை இளமை மாறாமல் காக்கும் என்பதை நம்புவதற்குப் பதில், ஒவ்வொரு நொடியும் நமது உடல் மாறிக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றது என்பதை நம்புவதே மேல்.
நமது தோலிலோ உடலிலோ மாற்றங்கள் இல்லையெனில் அதற்கு ஒரே ஓர் அர்த்தம், நமது உடலில் உயிர் இல்லை என்பதுதான். இறந்த நம் உடலும் புதைக்கப்பட்டால், அங்கும் மாற்றங்கள் தொடரும். மனிதராய் பிறந்த அனைவருக்கும், உயிரினங்கள் அனைத்திற்கும் உள்ள ஓர் அடிப்படை நியதி... மாற்றம்.
நமது உடலில் அல்லது மேல்தோலில் ஏற்படுவது போல், மாற்றங்கள் வாழ்வில் மெதுவாக, சிறுகச் சிறுக வரலாம். அல்லது இம்மாதம் 11ம் தேதி ஜப்பானில் உருவானதுபோல் நொடிப் பொழுது மாற்றங்கள் நம் உலகையும், வாழ்வையும் தலை கீழாய் புரட்டிப் போடலாம். மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும் வேளையில் ஜப்பானில் இலட்சக் கணக்கான மக்களின் வாழ்வு தலைகீழாக மாறியுள்ளதை எண்ணி அவர்கள் நல வாழ்வை நோக்கி மீண்டும் மாறி வர அவர்களுக்காக இன்று சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.
தவக்காலத்தை ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறோம். இக்காலத்தில் நாம் அடிக்கடி பேசும் அல்லது சிந்திக்கும் ஓர் எண்ணம் - மனமாற்றம். மனம் மாறும்போது, அதற்கு இணையாக வாழ்வு மாறும், இவ்வுலகமும் மாறும். மாற்றம் எங்கிருந்து ஆரம்பமாக வேண்டும்? நமக்குள்ளிருந்தா அல்லது வெளி உலகிலிருந்தா? பல நேரங்களில் நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மனிதர்கள், நமது சூழல் மாறினால் நாமும் மாறுவோம் என்று எண்ணுகிறோம், நம்புகிறோம். தீர ஆராய்ந்தால், நமக்குள் இருந்து வரும் மாற்றங்களே பிற மாற்றங்களின் அடித்தளமாய் அமையும்.... நமக்குள் இருந்து எழும் மாற்றங்களே நீண்ட காலம் நீடிக்கும் என்பதை உணரலாம்.
மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி, அதுவும் நமக்குள் இருந்து ஆரம்பமாகும் மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி பேசும்போது, அருள்தந்தை Anthony de Melloவின் கதை ஒன்று நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. வயது முதிர்ந்த ஒருவர் தன் வாழ்வைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்தார்: நான் புரட்சிகளை அதிகம் விரும்பிய இளைஞனாய் இருந்தபோது, "கடவுளே, உலகை மாற்றும் வரம் தா!" என்று இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினேன். நடுத்தர வயதை அடைந்தபோது என் செபம் சிறிது மாறியது: "கடவுளே, என் குடும்பத்தினரை, நண்பர்களை, என்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ளவர்களை மாற்றும் வரம் தா!" என்பது என் செபமானது. இப்போது வயது முதிர்ந்த நிலையில், என் இறுதி நாட்கள் எண்ணப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பதை உணர்கிறேன். இப்போது நான் வேண்டுவது இதுதான்: "கடவுளே, என்னையே நான் மாற்றிக் கொள்ளும் வரம்தா!" என்பதே என் இப்போதையச் செபம். இந்த செபத்தை நான் ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்தே வேண்டியிருந்தால், என் வாழ்வு எவ்வளவோ மாறியிருக்கும். ஒரு வேளை என்னைச் சுற்றியிருந்தவர்களும், இந்த உலகமும் மாறியிருக்கும்.
மாற்றங்களை, மனமாற்றங்களை சிந்திப்பதற்கு இன்றைய ஞாயிறு நல்லதொரு தருணம். ஆபிரகாம் வாழ்வில் ஏற்பட்ட மாற்றத்தைத் தொடக்க நூல் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமாகத் தருகிறது. இயேசு அடைந்த உருமாற்றத்தை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது.
ஆபிரகாம் பிறந்து, வளர்ந்து, வாழ்ந்து, பழக்கப்பட்ட ஓரிடத்திலிருந்து புதிய ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் செல்லும்படி இறைவன் அவரை அழைக்கிறார். (தொடக்க நூல் 12:1) இந்த மாற்றத்திற்கு இறைவன் அவரை அழைத்தபோது, ஆபிரகாமின் வயது 75. அந்த வயதில் ஒருவரால் பழக்கப்பட்ட இடங்களைவிட்டு, புதிய நாட்டிற்குப் போகமுடியுமா? சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு விஷயம். இன்று நாம் சந்திக்கும் ஓர் எதார்த்தம்.
என் நண்பர் ஒருவரது பெற்றோர் மதுரையில் 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக வாழ்ந்து வந்தவர்கள். அத்தனை ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் அவர்கள் சென்னையில் வாழும் தங்கள் மகனோடு சென்று தங்க வேண்டிய சூழல் உருவானது. அவர்கள் சென்னைக்கு வந்தபின் அவர்களைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றிருந்தேன். மதுரையில் அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்த வீட்டைக் காட்டிலும், சென்னையில் அவர்கள் இருந்த வீட்டில் வசதிகள் அதிகம் இருந்தன. இருந்தாலும், அவர்கள் எதையோ இழந்தவர்கள் போல் சோகமாய் இருந்தனர். நீரைவிட்டு வெளியே எறியப்பட்ட மீன்களைப் போல் அவர்கள் தவித்ததை உணர முடிந்தது. மதுரையும், சென்னையும் தமிழ் நாட்டின் பகுதிகள் தான். இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்கு அந்த வயதில் வந்த அந்த மாற்றங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை.
தமிழ் நாட்டை விட்டு, இந்தியாவின் பிற மாநிலங்களில் சென்று தங்க வேண்டியுள்ள வயதான பெற்றோரை எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். இந்திய மண்ணை விட்டு பிற நாடுகளில் வயதான காலத்தில் சென்று வாழ வேண்டிய பெற்றோரை எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். இவர்கள் அனைவரும் நமது வேண்டுதல்களுக்கு உரியவர்கள். வயதான காலத்தில் பழக்கப்பட்டச் சூழல்களில் இருந்து புதிய சூழல்களுக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ள, அல்லது புதியச் சூழல்களில் திணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இவர்களை நினைக்கும்போது, நீரை விட்டு வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட மீன், வேரோடு பிடுங்கப்பட்ட செடி அல்லது மரம் ஆகியவைகளே நமது எண்ணங்களில் பதியும் உருவகங்கள். ஆபிரகாமுக்கு இறைவன் இந்த அழைப்பைத் தந்தபோது, கூடவே தன் முழுமையான அசீரையும் தருவதாகக் கூறுகிறார். அது மட்டுமல்ல, ஆபிரகாமே ஓர் ஆசியாக மாறுவார் என்றும் இறைவன் வாக்களிக்கிறார். இறைவன் ஆபிரகாமிடம் சொல்வதைக் கேட்போம்:
தொடக்கநூல் 12 : 1-4
ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை நோக்கி, “உன் நாட்டிலிருந்தும் உன் இனத்தவரிடமிருந்தும் உன் தந்தை வீட்டிலிருந்தும் புறப்பட்டு, நான் உனக்குக் காண்பிக்கும் நாட்டிற்குச் செல். உன்னை நான் பெரிய இனமாக்குவேன்: உனக்கு ஆசி வழங்குவேன். உன் பெயரை நான் சிறப்புறச் செய்வேன்: நீயே ஆசியாக விளங்குவாய். உனக்கு ஆசி கூறுவோர்க்கு நான் ஆசி வழங்குவேன்: உன்னைச் சபிப்போரை நானும் சபிப்பேன்: உன் வழியாக மண்ணுலகின் மக்களினங்கள் அனைத்தும் ஆசி பெறும்” என்றார். ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுக்குக் கூறியபடியே அவர் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். அவருடன் லோத்தும் சென்றார். ஆபிராம் ஆரானைவிட்டுச் சென்றபொழுது அவருக்கு வயது எழுபத்தைந்து.
வயது முதிர்ந்த காலத்தில் பழக்கப்பட்டச் சூழல்களை விட்டு, புதியச் சூழல்களுக்குச் செல்லும் பெற்றோர் ஆபிரகாமைப் போல் இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து செல்லவும், அதன் வழியாக இறையாசீராகவே இவர்கள் மாறவும் வேண்டுமென செபிப்போம்.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூறியுள்ளது. இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தைப் பல கோணங்களில் சிந்திக்கலாம். இந்த உருமாற்ற நிகழ்வின் உச்சக்கட்டத்தை மட்டும் இப்போது சிந்திப்போம். இந்த உச்சக்கட்டத்தில் இயேசு தந்தையின் அன்புக்குரிய மகன் என்று புகழப்படுகிறார். உண்மையான அன்பு நல்ல மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கும் வலிமை பெற்றது என்பதை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம். Anthony de Melloவின் மற்றொரு கதை இக்கருத்தை வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.
பல வழிகளிலும் பக்குவமின்றி நடந்து வந்த ஓர் இளைஞனிடம் அனைவரும்: "தம்பி, நீ மாற வேண்டும்! மாற வேண்டும்!" என்ற ஒரே ‘கோரஸா’கச் சொல்லி வந்தனர். மாற வேண்டுமே என்ற கவலையில் அவன் இன்னும் மோசமாக மாறினான். அவன் மீது ஆழ்ந்த அன்பு கொண்ட ஒரு பெண் ஒரு நாள் அவனிடம் "நீ உண்மையிலேயே மிக நல்லவன். நீ மாற வேண்டிய தேவையே இல்லை." என்று கூறினார். அன்று முதல் அவன் மாற ஆரம்பித்தான்.
மலை என்பது இறைவன் வாழும் இடம் என்பதை இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் உணர்ந்திருதது போல் இயேசுவும் உணர்ந்திருந்தார். அன்று தன் சீடர்களுடன் மலைக்குச் சென்றதும், இறைவனின் பிரசன்னமும் அன்பும் தன்னைச் சூழ்ந்ததை அவர் உணர்ந்திருப்பார். அந்த உணர்வே அவரை உருமாற்றியிருக்க வேண்டும். இயேசு தனித்து உணர்ந்த தந்தையின் அன்பை இறைவன் சீட்கள் வழியே உலகறியச் செய்கிறார்.
இயேசுவுக்கும், சீடர்களுக்கும் நடந்த இந்த அற்புதமான, உன்னதமான உச்சக்கட்ட பூரிப்பிலேயே அனைவரும் தங்கிவிடலாம் என்று பேதுரு ஆலோசனை சொல்கிறார். கடவுளின் அன்பு நம்மில் உருவாக்கும் மாற்றங்கள் நம்முடைய தனிச் சொத்து என்று அங்கேயே கூடாரம் அமைத்துத் தங்கிவிட முடியாது. மீண்டும் மலையை விட்டு இறங்க வேண்டும், அதுமட்டுமல்ல... மற்றொரு மலைமேல் இறக்க வேண்டும் என்பதையும் இயேசு உடனடியாக தன் சீடர்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறார். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு உடனடியாக நினைவுபடுத்துகிறார். இறையன்பைச் சுவைப்பது பணி வாழ்வுக்கும், தியாகத்திற்கும் இட்டுச் செல்லவேண்டும். இல்லையெனில் அவ்வன்புக்கு அர்த்தம் இருக்காது என்பதை இயேசு தெளிவாக்குகிறார்.
தவக்காலத்தின் இந்த இரண்டாம் ஞாயிறன்று ஆபிரகாமின் வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்களை நிகழ்த்த இறைவன் கொடுத்த அழைப்பையும் இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தையும் இணைத்துச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, நம் மனதில் எழும் ஒரு சில வேண்டுதல்களோடு நம் சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்:
நிலநடுக்கம், சுனாமி, அணுக்கதிர் வீச்சு ஆகிய அடுக்கடுக்கான ஆபத்துக்களைச் சந்தித்துள்ள ஜப்பான் மக்கள் இரண்டாம் உலகப் போரில் சந்தித்த அணு அழிவு என்ற துயரச் சாம்பலிலிருந்து உயிர்பெற்று உயர்ந்தது போல், இப்பேரிடர்களிலிருந்தும் உயிர் பெற்று எழ வேண்டுமென அவர்களுக்காகச் சிறப்பாகச் செபிப்போம்.
75 வயதில் தன் நாட்டை விட்டு வேறு நாட்டிற்கு அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஆபிரகாம், இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து சென்றதுபோல், இறை அசீராகவே மாறியதுபோல், தங்கள் சூழ்நிலைகளை மாற்றவேண்டிய கட்டாயத்திற்கு உள்ளாக்கப்படும் வயதான பெற்றோர் ஆபிரகாமைப் போல் செல்லும் இடமெல்லாம் இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து செல்பவர்களாக மாற அவர்களுக்காகச் செபிப்போம்.
மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கும் வேளையில், தேர்தலை சந்திக்கவிருக்கும் தமிழ் நாட்டிலும் இன்னும் பிற மாநிலங்களிலும் மக்கள் வாழ்வை மையப்படுத்திய நல்ல மாற்றங்கள் உருவாக வேண்டும் என்றும் சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.
ஒவ்வொரு மாற்றமும் நமக்குள் இருந்து உருவாக வேண்டும், ஆழ்ந்த அன்பு கொண்டால் அனைத்தும் மாறும், இறையன்பு வெறும் உணர்வாக இல்லாமல், நம் வாழ்வில் செயலாக மாற வேண்டும் என்று இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றம் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தரும் பல பாடங்களை இத்தவக் காலத்தில் நாம் கற்றுக் கொள்ள ஒருவர் ஒருவருக்காகச் செபிப்போம்.

We are invited to think of this most common phenomenon of human beings on the II Sunday of Lent when we think of change – change of place for Abram, and the transfiguration of Jesus.
Change can happen in bits and pieces, as in the case of our skin, or in sudden moment as it happened on 11th March in Japan. Since we are reflecting on change, we shall in a special way pray for the Japanese people that they recover from this sudden, tragic change and its consequences soon.
Last week we reflected that everyone born will have to face temptations. This week we reflect on another common human phenomenon – CHANGE! Change is a key theme during the Lenten season - change of heart, change of our lifestyle. Most of us would tend to believe that when our surrounding changes we also change. On deeper analysis, we can see that radical, lasting changes can begin mostly from within. Here is a story from the master storyteller Fr Anthony de Mello in his famous book ‘The Song of the Bird’:
CHANGE THE WORLD BY CHANGING ME
The Sufi Bayazid says this about himself; “I was a revolutionary when I was young and my prayer to God was: ‘Lord, give me the energy to change the world.’”
“As I approached middle age and realized that half my life was gone without my changing a single soul, I changed my prayer to: ‘Lord, give me the grace to change all those who come in contact with me. Just my family and friends, and I shall be content,’”
“Now that I am an old man and my days are numbered, my one prayer is, ‘Lord, give me the grace to change myself.’ If I had prayed for this right from the start I should not have wasted my life.”

The first reading from the Book of Genesis talks of the baby steps Abram took in order to be changed to Abraham. God invites Abram to leave his familiar surroundings into the unknown, trusting in God alone. Not a great deal, one would say, if this were to happen when a person was in the prime of life. But, when Abram was called for this adventure he was 75 years old. Baby steps at the age of 75? Here is this invitation from God:
Genesis 12: 1-4
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.
When I read this passage, my mind instinctively turned to many senior persons who, in a way, are ‘forced’ to take the leap into the unknown. I am thinking of parents who have to shift their familiar surroundings in order to be with their children who have settled down in another country. Spare a moment to pray for them. God promised to Abram: “I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing… and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” May senior persons who have to face the tough decision of uprooting and planting themselves in unfamiliar circumstances be filled with God’s blessings and become a blessing to others!
Change that begins from within can transform people and transform the world around them. This change is more than helped by true love. Here is another story from ‘The Song of the Bird’ that ties up change and love of God quite neatly:
DON’T CHANGE
I was a neurotic for years. Anxious, depressed, selfish. And everyone kept telling me to change.
And I resented them, and agreed with them, and wanted to change, but simply couldn’t, no matter how I tried. What hurt the most was that, like the others, my closest friend kept urging me tochange. So I felt powerless and trapped.
One day he said “Don’t change. I love you as you are.”
Those words were music to my ears: “Don’t change. Don’t change. Don’t change... I love you as you are.”
I relaxed. I came alive. And, suddenly, I changed!
Now I know that I couldn’t really change till I found someone to love me whether I changed or not.
Is this how you love me, God?

In the Transfiguration event given in Matthew’s Gospel, (Matthew 17: 1-9) we see this transforming love of God in the most endearing affirmation: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Mt. 17:5).
Dear friends, this Sunday we pray for the following intentions:
That the people of Japan who have been devastated by the changes in nature as well as their own invention – the atomic energy – may come out of this crisis with God’s grace…
That seniors who are forced to change from familiar surroundings to strange places may be blessed by God abundantly and thus become a blessing themselves…
That we learn deeper lessons of ‘change’ that is an inevitable part of our human experience…

ஓர் உயிரியல் பாடத்துடன் நம் ஞாயிறு சிந்தனைகளை இன்று ஆரம்பிப்போம். நமது உடலில் பொதுவாக 10 இலட்சம் கோடி செல்கள் (10 trillion cells) உள்ளன. அவற்றில் 16 விழுக்காடு, அதாவது, ஒரு இலட்சத்து 60 ஆயிரம் கோடி செல்கள் நமது தோல் பகுதியாக உள்ளன. இவற்றில் ஏறத்தாழ 40,000 செல்கள் ஒவ்வொரு மணி நேரமும் இறந்து, புது செல்கள் உருவாகின்றன.
உங்கள் சருமத்தை இளமை மாறாமல் அதே நிலையில் வைத்திருக்க எங்கள் கம்பெனியின் 'க்ரீமை'ப் பயன்படுத்துங்கள் என்று சொல்லும் அனைத்து விளம்பரங்களும் அப்பட்டமான பொய். உலகின் எந்த ஒரு ‘க்ரீமு’ம் நமது தோலை ஒரு நாள் கூட மாறாமல் வைத்திருக்க முடியாது. ஒரு நாளைக்கு நாம் 10 லட்சம் செல்களை இழக்கிறோம், உருவாக்குகிறோம். நமது தோலிலிருந்து இறந்து விழும் செல்கள் நுண்ணிய தூசி போன்ற குப்பையாக நமது வீடுகளில் சேகரிக்கப்படுகின்றன. எனவே, எதோ ஒரு 'க்ரீம்' நமது தோலை இளமை மாறாமல் காக்கும் என்பதை நம்புவதற்குப் பதில், ஒவ்வொரு நொடியும் நமது உடல் மாறிக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றது என்பதை நம்புவதே மேல்.
நமது தோலிலோ உடலிலோ மாற்றங்கள் இல்லையெனில் அதற்கு ஒரே ஓர் அர்த்தம், நமது உடலில் உயிர் இல்லை என்பதுதான். இறந்த நம் உடலும் புதைக்கப்பட்டால், அங்கும் மாற்றங்கள் தொடரும். மனிதராய் பிறந்த அனைவருக்கும், உயிரினங்கள் அனைத்திற்கும் உள்ள ஓர் அடிப்படை நியதி... மாற்றம்.
நமது உடலில் அல்லது மேல்தோலில் ஏற்படுவது போல், மாற்றங்கள் வாழ்வில் மெதுவாக, சிறுகச் சிறுக வரலாம். அல்லது இம்மாதம் 11ம் தேதி ஜப்பானில் உருவானதுபோல் நொடிப் பொழுது மாற்றங்கள் நம் உலகையும், வாழ்வையும் தலை கீழாய் புரட்டிப் போடலாம். மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும் வேளையில் ஜப்பானில் இலட்சக் கணக்கான மக்களின் வாழ்வு தலைகீழாக மாறியுள்ளதை எண்ணி அவர்கள் நல வாழ்வை நோக்கி மீண்டும் மாறி வர அவர்களுக்காக இன்று சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.
தவக்காலத்தை ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறோம். இக்காலத்தில் நாம் அடிக்கடி பேசும் அல்லது சிந்திக்கும் ஓர் எண்ணம் - மனமாற்றம். மனம் மாறும்போது, அதற்கு இணையாக வாழ்வு மாறும், இவ்வுலகமும் மாறும். மாற்றம் எங்கிருந்து ஆரம்பமாக வேண்டும்? நமக்குள்ளிருந்தா அல்லது வெளி உலகிலிருந்தா? பல நேரங்களில் நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மனிதர்கள், நமது சூழல் மாறினால் நாமும் மாறுவோம் என்று எண்ணுகிறோம், நம்புகிறோம். தீர ஆராய்ந்தால், நமக்குள் இருந்து வரும் மாற்றங்களே பிற மாற்றங்களின் அடித்தளமாய் அமையும்.... நமக்குள் இருந்து எழும் மாற்றங்களே நீண்ட காலம் நீடிக்கும் என்பதை உணரலாம்.
மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி, அதுவும் நமக்குள் இருந்து ஆரம்பமாகும் மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி பேசும்போது, அருள்தந்தை Anthony de Melloவின் கதை ஒன்று நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. வயது முதிர்ந்த ஒருவர் தன் வாழ்வைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்தார்: நான் புரட்சிகளை அதிகம் விரும்பிய இளைஞனாய் இருந்தபோது, "கடவுளே, உலகை மாற்றும் வரம் தா!" என்று இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினேன். நடுத்தர வயதை அடைந்தபோது என் செபம் சிறிது மாறியது: "கடவுளே, என் குடும்பத்தினரை, நண்பர்களை, என்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ளவர்களை மாற்றும் வரம் தா!" என்பது என் செபமானது. இப்போது வயது முதிர்ந்த நிலையில், என் இறுதி நாட்கள் எண்ணப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பதை உணர்கிறேன். இப்போது நான் வேண்டுவது இதுதான்: "கடவுளே, என்னையே நான் மாற்றிக் கொள்ளும் வரம்தா!" என்பதே என் இப்போதையச் செபம். இந்த செபத்தை நான் ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்தே வேண்டியிருந்தால், என் வாழ்வு எவ்வளவோ மாறியிருக்கும். ஒரு வேளை என்னைச் சுற்றியிருந்தவர்களும், இந்த உலகமும் மாறியிருக்கும்.
மாற்றங்களை, மனமாற்றங்களை சிந்திப்பதற்கு இன்றைய ஞாயிறு நல்லதொரு தருணம். ஆபிரகாம் வாழ்வில் ஏற்பட்ட மாற்றத்தைத் தொடக்க நூல் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமாகத் தருகிறது. இயேசு அடைந்த உருமாற்றத்தை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது.
ஆபிரகாம் பிறந்து, வளர்ந்து, வாழ்ந்து, பழக்கப்பட்ட ஓரிடத்திலிருந்து புதிய ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் செல்லும்படி இறைவன் அவரை அழைக்கிறார். (தொடக்க நூல் 12:1) இந்த மாற்றத்திற்கு இறைவன் அவரை அழைத்தபோது, ஆபிரகாமின் வயது 75. அந்த வயதில் ஒருவரால் பழக்கப்பட்ட இடங்களைவிட்டு, புதிய நாட்டிற்குப் போகமுடியுமா? சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு விஷயம். இன்று நாம் சந்திக்கும் ஓர் எதார்த்தம்.
என் நண்பர் ஒருவரது பெற்றோர் மதுரையில் 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக வாழ்ந்து வந்தவர்கள். அத்தனை ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் அவர்கள் சென்னையில் வாழும் தங்கள் மகனோடு சென்று தங்க வேண்டிய சூழல் உருவானது. அவர்கள் சென்னைக்கு வந்தபின் அவர்களைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றிருந்தேன். மதுரையில் அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்த வீட்டைக் காட்டிலும், சென்னையில் அவர்கள் இருந்த வீட்டில் வசதிகள் அதிகம் இருந்தன. இருந்தாலும், அவர்கள் எதையோ இழந்தவர்கள் போல் சோகமாய் இருந்தனர். நீரைவிட்டு வெளியே எறியப்பட்ட மீன்களைப் போல் அவர்கள் தவித்ததை உணர முடிந்தது. மதுரையும், சென்னையும் தமிழ் நாட்டின் பகுதிகள் தான். இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்கு அந்த வயதில் வந்த அந்த மாற்றங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை.
தமிழ் நாட்டை விட்டு, இந்தியாவின் பிற மாநிலங்களில் சென்று தங்க வேண்டியுள்ள வயதான பெற்றோரை எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். இந்திய மண்ணை விட்டு பிற நாடுகளில் வயதான காலத்தில் சென்று வாழ வேண்டிய பெற்றோரை எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். இவர்கள் அனைவரும் நமது வேண்டுதல்களுக்கு உரியவர்கள். வயதான காலத்தில் பழக்கப்பட்டச் சூழல்களில் இருந்து புதிய சூழல்களுக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ள, அல்லது புதியச் சூழல்களில் திணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இவர்களை நினைக்கும்போது, நீரை விட்டு வெளியேற்றப்பட்ட மீன், வேரோடு பிடுங்கப்பட்ட செடி அல்லது மரம் ஆகியவைகளே நமது எண்ணங்களில் பதியும் உருவகங்கள். ஆபிரகாமுக்கு இறைவன் இந்த அழைப்பைத் தந்தபோது, கூடவே தன் முழுமையான அசீரையும் தருவதாகக் கூறுகிறார். அது மட்டுமல்ல, ஆபிரகாமே ஓர் ஆசியாக மாறுவார் என்றும் இறைவன் வாக்களிக்கிறார். இறைவன் ஆபிரகாமிடம் சொல்வதைக் கேட்போம்:
தொடக்கநூல் 12 : 1-4
ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை நோக்கி, “உன் நாட்டிலிருந்தும் உன் இனத்தவரிடமிருந்தும் உன் தந்தை வீட்டிலிருந்தும் புறப்பட்டு, நான் உனக்குக் காண்பிக்கும் நாட்டிற்குச் செல். உன்னை நான் பெரிய இனமாக்குவேன்: உனக்கு ஆசி வழங்குவேன். உன் பெயரை நான் சிறப்புறச் செய்வேன்: நீயே ஆசியாக விளங்குவாய். உனக்கு ஆசி கூறுவோர்க்கு நான் ஆசி வழங்குவேன்: உன்னைச் சபிப்போரை நானும் சபிப்பேன்: உன் வழியாக மண்ணுலகின் மக்களினங்கள் அனைத்தும் ஆசி பெறும்” என்றார். ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுக்குக் கூறியபடியே அவர் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். அவருடன் லோத்தும் சென்றார். ஆபிராம் ஆரானைவிட்டுச் சென்றபொழுது அவருக்கு வயது எழுபத்தைந்து.
வயது முதிர்ந்த காலத்தில் பழக்கப்பட்டச் சூழல்களை விட்டு, புதியச் சூழல்களுக்குச் செல்லும் பெற்றோர் ஆபிரகாமைப் போல் இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து செல்லவும், அதன் வழியாக இறையாசீராகவே இவர்கள் மாறவும் வேண்டுமென செபிப்போம்.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூறியுள்ளது. இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தைப் பல கோணங்களில் சிந்திக்கலாம். இந்த உருமாற்ற நிகழ்வின் உச்சக்கட்டத்தை மட்டும் இப்போது சிந்திப்போம். இந்த உச்சக்கட்டத்தில் இயேசு தந்தையின் அன்புக்குரிய மகன் என்று புகழப்படுகிறார். உண்மையான அன்பு நல்ல மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கும் வலிமை பெற்றது என்பதை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம். Anthony de Melloவின் மற்றொரு கதை இக்கருத்தை வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.
பல வழிகளிலும் பக்குவமின்றி நடந்து வந்த ஓர் இளைஞனிடம் அனைவரும்: "தம்பி, நீ மாற வேண்டும்! மாற வேண்டும்!" என்ற ஒரே ‘கோரஸா’கச் சொல்லி வந்தனர். மாற வேண்டுமே என்ற கவலையில் அவன் இன்னும் மோசமாக மாறினான். அவன் மீது ஆழ்ந்த அன்பு கொண்ட ஒரு பெண் ஒரு நாள் அவனிடம் "நீ உண்மையிலேயே மிக நல்லவன். நீ மாற வேண்டிய தேவையே இல்லை." என்று கூறினார். அன்று முதல் அவன் மாற ஆரம்பித்தான்.
மலை என்பது இறைவன் வாழும் இடம் என்பதை இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் உணர்ந்திருதது போல் இயேசுவும் உணர்ந்திருந்தார். அன்று தன் சீடர்களுடன் மலைக்குச் சென்றதும், இறைவனின் பிரசன்னமும் அன்பும் தன்னைச் சூழ்ந்ததை அவர் உணர்ந்திருப்பார். அந்த உணர்வே அவரை உருமாற்றியிருக்க வேண்டும். இயேசு தனித்து உணர்ந்த தந்தையின் அன்பை இறைவன் சீட்கள் வழியே உலகறியச் செய்கிறார்.
இயேசுவுக்கும், சீடர்களுக்கும் நடந்த இந்த அற்புதமான, உன்னதமான உச்சக்கட்ட பூரிப்பிலேயே அனைவரும் தங்கிவிடலாம் என்று பேதுரு ஆலோசனை சொல்கிறார். கடவுளின் அன்பு நம்மில் உருவாக்கும் மாற்றங்கள் நம்முடைய தனிச் சொத்து என்று அங்கேயே கூடாரம் அமைத்துத் தங்கிவிட முடியாது. மீண்டும் மலையை விட்டு இறங்க வேண்டும், அதுமட்டுமல்ல... மற்றொரு மலைமேல் இறக்க வேண்டும் என்பதையும் இயேசு உடனடியாக தன் சீடர்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறார். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு உடனடியாக நினைவுபடுத்துகிறார். இறையன்பைச் சுவைப்பது பணி வாழ்வுக்கும், தியாகத்திற்கும் இட்டுச் செல்லவேண்டும். இல்லையெனில் அவ்வன்புக்கு அர்த்தம் இருக்காது என்பதை இயேசு தெளிவாக்குகிறார்.
தவக்காலத்தின் இந்த இரண்டாம் ஞாயிறன்று ஆபிரகாமின் வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்களை நிகழ்த்த இறைவன் கொடுத்த அழைப்பையும் இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றத்தையும் இணைத்துச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, நம் மனதில் எழும் ஒரு சில வேண்டுதல்களோடு நம் சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்:
நிலநடுக்கம், சுனாமி, அணுக்கதிர் வீச்சு ஆகிய அடுக்கடுக்கான ஆபத்துக்களைச் சந்தித்துள்ள ஜப்பான் மக்கள் இரண்டாம் உலகப் போரில் சந்தித்த அணு அழிவு என்ற துயரச் சாம்பலிலிருந்து உயிர்பெற்று உயர்ந்தது போல், இப்பேரிடர்களிலிருந்தும் உயிர் பெற்று எழ வேண்டுமென அவர்களுக்காகச் சிறப்பாகச் செபிப்போம்.
75 வயதில் தன் நாட்டை விட்டு வேறு நாட்டிற்கு அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஆபிரகாம், இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து சென்றதுபோல், இறை அசீராகவே மாறியதுபோல், தங்கள் சூழ்நிலைகளை மாற்றவேண்டிய கட்டாயத்திற்கு உள்ளாக்கப்படும் வயதான பெற்றோர் ஆபிரகாமைப் போல் செல்லும் இடமெல்லாம் இறையாசீரைச் சுமந்து செல்பவர்களாக மாற அவர்களுக்காகச் செபிப்போம்.
மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கும் வேளையில், தேர்தலை சந்திக்கவிருக்கும் தமிழ் நாட்டிலும் இன்னும் பிற மாநிலங்களிலும் மக்கள் வாழ்வை மையப்படுத்திய நல்ல மாற்றங்கள் உருவாக வேண்டும் என்றும் சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.
ஒவ்வொரு மாற்றமும் நமக்குள் இருந்து உருவாக வேண்டும், ஆழ்ந்த அன்பு கொண்டால் அனைத்தும் மாறும், இறையன்பு வெறும் உணர்வாக இல்லாமல், நம் வாழ்வில் செயலாக மாற வேண்டும் என்று இயேசுவின் உருமாற்றம் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தரும் பல பாடங்களை இத்தவக் காலத்தில் நாம் கற்றுக் கொள்ள ஒருவர் ஒருவருக்காகச் செபிப்போம்.
