Last Sunday we began our reflection with this statement: It’s high time we got out of Vatican… Now, it’s high time we got back to Vatican. Vatican has witnessed quite a few topsy-turvy events in the past few days – from Wednesday evening, to be precise! We don’t want to be left behind. It is a right-about-turn for us and, hopefully, for the Church!

Last Sunday we wanted to get out of Vatican so that we would not be part of the guessing games –played by the media on who would be the successor to Benedict XVI. There were ‘expert opinions’ on the next Pope – his age, his nationality, his ability to govern, his academic achievements, his intellectual acumen… so on and so on. Of course, there were also some Cardinals who were projected as serious candidates to ascend the Chair of St Peter. All these seemed to have turned topsy-turvy! Our prayer for the Holy Spirit to work, seemed to have worked!

March 13, Wednesday, the second day of the Conclave, 5.30 p.m. People had made a calculation that the third ballot of the day, the fourth from the start of the Conclave would yield a positive result. So, there were thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square, not minding the incessant drizzle. I was one of them. While there, I looked up at the central balcony of the Basilica from where the New Pope would appear to greet the people. This balcony was draped in white and maroon cloth – usual colours of royalty! As I was gazing at the balcony, suddenly a question flashed across my mind – will it be possible for an ordinary person, say, one of these thousands gathered here, to stand on that balcony and wave to the people? Little did I imagine that this question would be answered in a matter of three hours.

Yes, around 7 p.m., after the fifth ballot, there was WHITE SMOKE from the chimney. The bells of the Basilica began ringing to drive away any doubt from people’s mind that this was really ‘white smoke’. The Cardinals had found the new Pope! The message spread like wildfire and the crowd swelled to 150,000. The cheer from the people was a special experience!

Around 8 p.m., the maroon screen of the balcony parted and out came Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran to announce ‘Habemus Papam’, which, literally translated, would mean – We have a Father! Well, over the history of the Church, ‘Papa’ became a title. The original sense of this announcement made sense to me after another half an hour, since I felt that we have a real ‘Father’ in the new Pope.

Then Cardinal Tauran went on to announce the name of the Cardinal who would be our Pope. When he mentioned the name of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, most of those in Peter’s Square did not know who it was. It suddenly dawned on me… This was the only Jesuit attending the Conclave! But, I had not seen him nor had known anything about him earlier. So, I was part of the thousands who were there and the millions who were watching on the TV, awaiting eagerly to find out who this stranger was. But, when Cardinal Tauran announced that the new Pope had taken the name of Francis, there was a spontaneous applause from the crowd. I was amazed at the choice of this name. I am sure millions would have shared this pleasant amazement with me. I was wondering how such an endearing Saint’s name had not been taken even by some Franciscans who had become Popes.

In another ten minutes, the 265^th successor to St Peter, Pope Francis, appeared on the balcony, wearing a simple white cassock with a simple crucifix – no red mozzetta (red upper piece covering the shoulders up to the waist), and no golden, ornamented crucifix. Talk of the first impressions!

What followed in the next 20 minutes confirmed the first impressions that we have a great person in front of us. Pope Francis spoke to the people from his heart, beginning with a simple ‘buona sera’ – good evening. It was like listening to a Parish Priest chatting with his parishioners. Here is a translation of his first words to the world:

Brothers and sisters, good evening.

You all know that the duty of the Conclave was to give a bishop to Rome. It seems that my brother Cardinals have come almost to the ends of the earth to get him… but here we are. I thank you for the welcome that has come from the diocesan community of Rome.

First of all I would say a prayer for our Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI.. Let us all pray together for him, that the Lord bless him and Our Lady protect him.

Then he went on to lead the people in their simple daily prayers - Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory be to the Father…

By this time one could sense a remarkable change in the people. They had come for a public celebration, but Pope Francis had turned the ambience to a prayerful mood. He went on to say:

And now let us begin this journey, the Bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome which presides in charity over all the Churches, a journey of brotherhood in love, of mutual trust. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world that there might be a great sense of brotherhood. My hope is that this journey of the Church that we begin today, together with help of my Cardinal Vicar, be fruitful for the evangelization of this beautiful city.

What followed was a defining moment which is etched deep in my mind and heart. I am sure millions would share these sentiments of mine. Pope Francis requested the people to pray for him.

And now I would like to give the blessing, but first I want to ask you a favour. Before the bishop blesses the people I ask that you would pray to the Lord to bless me – the prayer of the people for their Bishop. Let us say this prayer – your prayer for me – in silence.

Pope Francis, the Supreme Pontiff of 1.2 billion Catholics around the world, bowed down before the people and asked for their prayers. That gesture was a supreme testimony of the type of person we have as our Holy Father. The silence that prevailed in Peter’s Square would have left lasting impression on millions around the world. If the Pope can bow down in prayer before the world in the full glare of all the media, then we can be assured of many blessings! All through his talk, never once did he mention the word ‘Pope’, neither for himself nor for Benedict XVI.

Then the Pope went on to give the famous ‘Urbi et Orbi’ – to the City and to the World – blessing.   

I will now give my blessing to you and to the whole world, to all men and women of good will.

Soon after the Blessing, he resumed his informal chat with the people.

Brothers and sisters, I am leaving you for now. Thank you for your welcome. Pray for me and I will be with you again soon. We will see one another soon. Tomorrow I want to go and pray to the Madonna, that she may protect Rome.

Good night and sleep well!

Those twenty minutes of Pope Francis on the balcony answered the question I had raised in my heart around 5.30 p.m., namely, whether an ordinary person could stand on that balcony. Pope Francis had answered this question with an emphatic reply – not in words, but in action – that an ordinary, down to earth person can become the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church.

For the past three days many more incidents have spoken eloquently about how simple and spiritual Pope Francis is.

• Usually, after the election of the Pope, the chosen Cardinal would sit on a special chair reserved for the Pope and all the other Cardinals in the Conclave would pay their respectful obedience to him. When Cardinal Bergoglio was chosen, he did not sit on that chair; instead he greeted all the Cardinals, standing.
• Soon after the public appearance in St Peter’s Square, the special car was waiting for him with all the swiss guards in attendance. Pope Francis got into the bus arranged for all the Cardinals and took his place among them.
• In the House of St Martha where all the Cardinals stayed for the Conclave, there is a special room for the Pope. He did not take that room and still remains in the same room allotted to      him for the Conclave.
• On Thursday, March 14, when he went to the Basilica of St Mary Major, it was a very simple affair. He did not take the car meant for the Pope and he did not want any other car to accompany his car. (Usually, when the Pope rides within Rome, there would be five or six cars in a row and the traffic would be halted briefly on the route.)
• After visiting the Basilica he went back to the House where he was put up before the Conclave, cleared his room, thanked the staff of the house, paid the bills and returned to Vatican.
• On Friday, he visited one of the senior Cardinals in a hospital in Rome without any prior notice, surprising everyone in the hospital.
• He had called the Superior General of the Jesuits, Fr Adolfo Nicolas, over the phone directly himself. When the person working at the reception of Fr General’s Residence who was attending the call, came to know it was the Pope, he was so excited that the Pope had to tell him to calm down.
• The statements he has made in different talks these days have reflected that he is very Christ-centered.

If these are just a fore-taste of what is to come, we can expect a real ‘metanoia’ (turn-around), a Vatican Spring during this Lenten Season, leading to the Resurrection!

The media, in general, has welcomed the New Pope with warmth. But… BUT… there have also been some comments and criticisms on his ministry in Argentina. There are also negative comments made on the Society of Jesus to which he belongs.

This trend of the media and some negative minded persons keen on searching for skeletons in imaginary cupboards, remind us of today’s Gospel where the scribes and the Pharisees bring to Jesus a woman caught in adultery. For the religious bigwigs the woman was only a pawn. Their main motive was to corner Jesus. Jesus tells them: “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8: 7) Jesus was trying to tell them: “No one is blameless. Why harp on the negative? Try to foster goodness in people.”

I am reminded of one of the posters I had seen some time back. It was a photograph of a person with well muscled arms balancing on parallel bars on the strength of his arms. His legs, affected by polio, dangled like two pieces of rag. The caption for this picture went like this: “Look at my strength, not my weakness.”

If Jesus were to walk into Vatican today he would pat Pope Francis on the back and tell him, “Well begun, my friend. Keep it up!” We know that Pope Francis is an ordinary, fragile human being. He would probably be the first person to acknowledge this. Pope Francis would gladly say along with St Paul the words we read in today’s second reading from the Letter to the Philippians:

Philippians 3: 8-14

I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

St Paul goes on to say the following words which are not given to us in today’s reading. But, this may be a good counsel given to those who are trying to pick holes in Pope Francis’ earlier ministry in Argentina.

Let those of us who are mature be thus minded; and if in anything you are otherwise minded, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained. (Philippians 3: 15-16)

There are quite a few versions about the call St Francis of Assisi received from God: "Go, Francis, and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin." We pray to the Holy Spirit to help Pope Francis to ‘rebuild the House of God’!

வத்திக்கானுக்குத் திரும்புவோம் வாருங்கள். சென்ற வாரம் வத்திக்கானை விட்டு வெளியேறுவோம் என்று சிந்தித்தோம். அதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம், புதியத் திருத்தந்தையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் 'கான்கிளேவ்' கர்தினால்கள் அவை விரைவில் துவங்கவிருந்தது. திருஅவையின் தலைவர் யாராக, எப்படிப்பட்டவராக, எந்த நாட்டினராக, எந்த வயதினராக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று ஊடகங்களும், உலக அரசியல் பாணியில் சிந்தித்த அறிஞர்களும் பல்வேறு கணிப்புக்களை, கருத்துக்களைப் பரப்பிவந்தனர். அந்தக் கருத்துக்களால் பாதிக்கப்படாமல், தூய ஆவியாரை நம்பி 'கான்கிளேவ்' அவைக்குள் கர்தினால்கள் செல்லவேண்டும் என்ற வேண்டுதலுடன் நாம் வத்திக்கானைவிட்டு வெளியேறினோம். இப்போது, வத்திக்கானுக்குள் திரும்புகிறோம். ஏனெனில், ஒரு  புதியத் திருத்தந்தை தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். மார்ச் 13 வரை சொல்லப்பட்ட பல கருத்துக்களை முற்றிலும் புரட்டிப் போட்டதுபோல், கர்தினால்கள் புதியத் திருத்தந்தையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ளனர் என்று சொன்னால், அது மிகையல்ல.

திருஅவையின் 266வது தலைவராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றிருக்கும் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ், 'முதல்' என்ற வார்த்தையைத் தனக்கே உரிமையாக்கிக் கொண்டதுபோல் தெரிகிறது. அமெரிக்கக் கண்டத்திலிருந்து தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள முதல் திருத்தந்தை இவர். திருத்தந்தை என்ற பொறுப்பை ஏற்கும் முதல் இயேசு சபை துறவி இவர். 'பிரான்சிஸ்' என்ற பெயரை ஏற்கும் முதல் திருத்தந்தை. நமது சிந்தனைகளின்போது இன்னும் பல வழிகளில் இவர் முதன்மையானவர் என்பதை உணர வாய்ப்புண்டு.

மார்ச் 13, புதன் மாலை 5.30 மணிக்கு, சிஸ்டின் சிற்றாலயத்தில் கூடியிருந்த கர்தினால்களின் 'கான்கிளேவ்' அவையில் நான்காவது வாக்கெடுப்பு முடியும் என்று கணித்து மக்கள் கூட்டம் புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தின் வளாகத்தை நிறைத்தது. விடாமல் மழை பெய்துகொண்டிருந்தாலும், ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் சிஸ்டின் சிற்றாலயக் கூரையில் அமைந்திருந்த புகைப்போக்கியைப் பார்த்தவண்ணம் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர்.

நானும் அவர்களில் ஒருவன். 6.00 மணி வரை எந்த முடிவும் வரவில்லை. நான் அங்கு காத்திருந்த 15 அல்லது 20 நிமிடங்களில் புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தின் மேல்மாடத்தை ஏதோ முதல் முறை பார்ப்பதுபோல் ஆழ்ந்து பார்த்தேன். சிவப்பு, வெள்ளை ஆகிய திரைகள் மாட்டப்பட்டு காட்சியளித்த அந்த மாடத்தில் புதியத் திருத்தந்தை முதல் முறையாக மக்களுக்குத் தோன்றுவார் என்பது தெரியும். அந்த மாடத்தைப் பார்த்தபோது, திடீரென எனக்குள் ஓர் எண்ணம் எழுந்தது. இத்தனை ஆயிரம் சாதாரண மக்கள் இங்கு நிற்கின்றனரே, இவர்களில் ஒருவர் அங்கு ஏறி நிற்க முடியுமா? என்பதே அந்த எண்ணம். அந்த எண்ணம் அடுத்த சில மணி நேரங்களில் நிஜமாகும் என்று அப்போது நான் எண்ணிப் பார்க்கவில்லை.

ஆம், கான்கிளேவ் அவையின் 5வது வாக்கெடுப்பு முடிந்து, 7.05 மணிக்கு வெள்ளைப் புகை வெளியானது. புதியத் திருத்தந்தை தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டார் என்ற அவ்வடையாளத்தைக் கண்டதும் மக்களிடம் எழுந்த ஆரவாரம் அழகான ஓர் அனுபவம். இச்செய்தி பரவியதும், வளாகத்தில் கூடிய கூட்டம் இன்னும் பல்லாயிரமாக உயர்ந்தது. இரவு 8 மணி அளவில், மேல்மாடத்தில் தோன்றிய கர்தினால் Jean Louis Tauran, இலத்தீன் மொழியில், "Habemus Papam", அதாவது, "தந்தையைப் பெற்றுள்ளோம்" என்று அறிவித்தார். ஆம், அன்புள்ளங்களே, அவர் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளின் நேரடி மொழிபெயர்ப்பு இதுதான் - நாம் ஒரு தந்தையைப் பெற்றுள்ளோம். "திருத்தந்தையைப் பெற்றுள்ளோம்" என்ற அறிவிப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து, கர்தினால் Tauran புதியத் திருத்தந்தையின் பெயரை அறிவித்தார். "கர்தினால் Jorge Mario Bergoglio அவர்களே நமது புதியத் திருத்தந்தை. அவர் 'பிரான்சிஸ்' என்ற பெயரைத் தேர்ந்துள்ளார்" என்று அவர் அறிவித்தார். புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலய வளாகத்தில் கூடியிருந்த மக்களில் பலருக்கு அவர் அறிவித்த கர்தினால் யார் என்று தெரிந்திருக்கவில்லை. ஆனால், அவர் 'பிரான்சிஸ்' என்ற பெயரைத் தெரிவு செய்துள்ளார் என்ற செய்தி மகிழ்வைத் தந்தது.

அடுத்த ஐந்து நிமிடங்கள் சென்று, சிலுவை ஏந்திய ஒருவர் முன்னே வர, அவருக்குப் பின், வெள்ளை அங்கி அணிந்து மேல்மாடத்திற்கு வந்தார் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ். தென் அமெரிக்க நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களைத் தவிர, வளாகத்தில் கூடியிருந்த பல்லாயிரம் மக்களுக்கும், தொலைக்காட்சியில் இதைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பல கோடி மக்களுக்கும் இவர் முதன்முறையாக அறிமுகமாகி, அனைவரையும் ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்தினார்.

தொடர்ந்த 15 அல்லது 20 நிமிடங்கள் அங்கு நிகழ்ந்தவை இன்னும் பல ஆச்சரியங்களைச் சுமந்து வந்தன. திருத்தந்தையர் பொதுவாக முதல்முறை மக்கள் முன் தோன்றும்போது அணியும் ஆடம்பரமான சிவப்பு மேலுடையையோ, தங்கத்தால் ஆன சிலுவையையோ அணியாமல், வெறும் வெள்ளை அங்கியின் மேல் சாதாரண சிலுவை அணிந்து தோன்றினார், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ்.

எளிமையான இத்தாலிய மொழியில் மக்களிடம் உரையாடுவதுபோல் அமைந்திருந்தது அவரது முதல் உரை. தனக்கு முன்னர் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பிலிருந்த 16ம் பெனடிக்ட் அவர்களுக்காகச் செபிக்கும்படி கூறிய திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ், வானகத் தந்தை, அருள்நிறை மரியே, மூவொரு இறைவன் புகழ் என்ற எளிய செபங்களை மக்களோடு சேர்ந்து செபித்தார். புதியத் திருத்தந்தையைக் காணவேண்டும் என்ற ஆவலில் அந்த வளாகத்தில் உருவாகியிருந்த விழாக்கோலம் மாறி, ஒரு செப வழிபாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ளும் அனுபவம் மக்கள் மத்தியில் பரவ ஆரம்பித்தது.

திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் தொடர்ந்து பேசிய எண்ணங்கள் இவைதாம்: "உரோமையின் ஆயராகிய நான், உங்களோடு சேர்ந்து இவ்வுலகப் பயணத்தில் கலந்துகொள்கிறேன். உங்களுக்கும், உலகில் உள்ள அனைத்து நல்மனதோருக்கும் என் சிறப்பு ஆசீரை (Urbi et Orbi) வழங்கவிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், அதற்கு முன் உங்களிடம் ஒரு வேண்டுகோளை விடுக்கிறேன்" என்று அவர் சொன்னதும், அங்கிருந்த மக்கள் அமைதியாயினர்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, புதியத் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் சொன்னதும் செய்ததும் எந்த ஒரு திருத்தந்தையும் செய்யாத ஒன்று என்று உறுதியாகச் சொல்லமுடியும். திருத்தந்தை தொடர்ந்து பேசியது இதுதான்: "ஓர் ஆயர் தன் மக்களை ஆசீர்வதிப்பதற்குமுன், மக்களாகிய நீங்கள் உங்கள் ஆயருக்காக, எனக்காக இறைவனிடம் அமைதியாகச் செபியுங்கள்" என்று சொன்னபின், அற்புதமான ஒரு செயலை திருத்தந்தை செய்தார். மேல்மாடத்தில் மக்களுக்கு முன் அவர் தலைவணங்கி நின்றார்.

1,50,000க்கும் அதிகமாய் அங்கிருந்த மக்கள் முழு அமைதியில் செபித்தது அற்புதமான ஓர் அனுபவம். இந்தக் காட்சியை நேரடி ஒளிபரப்பில் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த பல கோடி மக்களும் அந்நேரம் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களுக்காகச் செபித்திருப்பார்கள். மதம், இனம், மொழி என்ற அனைத்து எல்லைகளையும் கடந்து அந்த ஒரு சில மணித்துளிகள், மக்களின் செபங்களுக்காக விண்ணப்பித்து, அனைவர் முன்னிலையில் புதியத் திருத்தந்தை தலைவணங்கி நின்றது இதுவரை யாரும் கண்டிராத முதல் அனுபவம்.

உலக ஊடகங்கள் தன்னைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தன என்ற எண்ணமே இல்லாமல், ஏதோ ஒரு பங்கு மக்களைச் சந்தித்து உரையாற்றும் பங்குதந்தை போல அவர் பேசியதைக் கேட்டபோது, 120 கோடி கத்தோலிக்க மக்களின் தலைவர், மக்கள் முன் தலைவணங்கி நின்றபோது, வெகு சாதாரண அருள்பணியாளர் ஒருவர் அந்த மேல்மாடத்தில் நிற்கிறார் என்ற உண்மை எனக்குப் புலனானது. மாலை 5.30 மணிபோல அந்த மேல்மாடத்தைப் பார்த்தபோது எனக்குள் எழுந்த கேள்விக்கு விடை கிடைத்ததைப்போல் உணர்ந்தேன்.

புதன் இரவு மட்டுமல்ல, வியாழன், வெள்ளி, சனி ஆகிய மூன்று நாட்களும் அவர் ஆற்றிய அனைத்துச் செயல்களிலும், அவர் வழங்கிய அனைத்து உரைகளிலும் தாழ்ச்சியும், எளிமையும், ஆழ்ந்த ஆன்மீகமும் வெளிப்பட்டன என்பதை மறுக்கமுடியாது. இதுவரை, திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் குறித்து வெளிவந்துள்ள கருத்துக்களெல்லாம் பொதுவாக நல்லவைகளாகவே இருந்தாலும், இங்கொன்றும் அங்கொன்றுமாக நல்லவை அல்லாத ஒரு சில செய்திகளும் வெளிவந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளன. ஊடகங்களுக்கே உரிய ஒரு பாணி இது என்று சொல்ல முடியும். அதே நேரம், இதை நம்மிடம் உள்ள ஒரு குறைபாடு என்றும் எண்ணிப் பார்க்க வேண்டும். நம்மைச் சுற்றி நாலாபக்கமும் நல்லவைகள் நடக்கும்போது, அவற்றைப் போற்றி வளர்ப்பதற்குப் பதில், ஏதாவது ஒரு மூலையில் உள்ள குறைகளைப் பெரிதுபடுத்தும் நம் மனித இயல்பை நாம் ஆய்வு செய்யவேண்டும்.

சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் நான் பார்த்த வாசகம் தாங்கிய ஒரு புகைப்படம் இப்போது என் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. அந்தப் படத்தில், உடற்பயிற்சி செய்யும் ஒருவர் இணையான இரு இரும்புச் சட்டங்களில் (parallel bars) இரு கைகளை ஊன்றி, உடலை மேலெழுப்பி நிற்கிறார். உருண்டு திரண்டிருக்கும் வலுவான அவரது இரு கைகளும் அவரது உடல் பாரத்தைத் தாங்கிய வண்ணம் உள்ளன. ஆனால், இளம்பிள்ளைவாத (polio) நோயினால் தாக்கப்பட்டு, வலுவிழந்த அவரது இரு கால்களும் துணிபோல் தொங்குகின்றன. அந்தப் படத்திற்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள வாசகம் இதுதான்: "Look at my strength; not my weakness", அதாவது, "என் வலிமையைப் பாருங்கள்; என் குறையை அல்ல".

இதற்கு நேர்மாறான வழிமுறை, வத்திக்கானையும் சேர்த்து, திருஅவையின் பல்வேறு நிறுவனங்களிலும், துறவு சபைகளிலும், காணப்படுகிறது என்பது வேதனை தரும் உண்மை. இந்த அவலமான வழிமுறையைப் பின்பற்றி, புதியத் திருத்தந்தையாகப் பொறுப்பேற்றிருக்கும் பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களின் கடந்தகால வாழ்வைப் பல கோணங்களில் ஆய்வுசெய்து, அங்கு காணப்பட்ட குறைகளை, பொறுப்பற்ற முறையில் வெளிச்சம் போட்டுக்காட்டும் முயற்சிகளும் நடைபெறுகின்றன.

இதுமட்டுமல்லாமல், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் சேர்ந்திருந்த இயேசு சபையைப் பற்றிய அரைகுறையான கருத்துக்களையும் ஒரு சிலர் வெளியிட்டு வருவதைக் காண முடிகிறது. திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் பதவியேற்று முழுதாக ஒரு வாரம் கூட முடியாத நிலையில், அவரைப்பற்றியும் அவர் சார்ந்திருந்த இயேசு சபையைப்பற்றியும் முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்களுடன் அவசரமாக வெளியிடப்படும் இந்த அரைகுறையான எண்ணங்களைக் கண்டு சிரிப்பதா, வேதனைப்படுவதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. இவ்விதம் செய்யப்படும்  முயற்சிகள் என்ன சாதிக்கப்போகின்றன என்பதுதான் நாம் எழுப்ப வேண்டிய கேள்வி.

குறைகளையே பெரிதுபடுத்தும் நம் இயல்பை, விரைவாகத் தீர்ப்பு வழங்கும் நம் இயல்பை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி படம் பிடித்துக் காட்டுகிறது. இயேசுவை எப்படியும் வெல்லவேண்டும் என்ற வெறியில் ஒரு பெண்ணை பகடைக் காயாகப் பயன்பத்திய மறைநூல் அறிஞரும், பரிசேயரும் வேறு யாருமல்ல... நாம் அனைவருமே!

இயேசு அன்று சொன்னதையே இன்று நம்மைப் பார்த்தும் சொல்வார்: "உங்களுள் பாவம் இல்லாதவர் முதலில் இப்பெண்மேல் கல் எறியட்டும்". இயேசுவின் இவ்வார்த்தைகளை நான் இவ்விதம் எண்ணிப்பார்க்கிறேன்: "உங்களில் யார்தான் குறையின்றி வாழ்கிறீர்கள்? நாம் அனைவருமே குறையுள்ளவர்கள்தான். எனவே, குறைகளில் உங்கள் கவனத்தைச் செலுத்தாமல், நல்லது செய்வதில், வீழ்ந்து கிடப்போரைத் தூக்கி எழுப்புவதில் கவனம் செலுத்துங்கள்".

இயேசு இன்று நம்மிடையே வந்தால், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களை ஆசீர்வதித்து, "நன்கு ஆரம்பித்துள்ளீர்கள். தொடருங்கள் உங்கள் நற்பணியை" என்றுதான் சொல்வாரே தவிர, அவரது கடந்த வாழ்வில், பணியில் உள்ள குறைகளைப் பெரிதுபடுத்தமாட்டார். நம்மை வழிநடத்த வந்திருக்கும் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், நம்மைப்போல் ஒரு சாதாரண மனிதர்தான்; ஆனால், இவ்வேளையில் ஒரு புனிதமான பணிக்கென அழைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பவர் என்ற எண்ணம் நமக்குள் மேலோங்கவும், தலைமை ஆயரின் பணியைத் அவர் திறம்படச் செய்யவும் தூய ஆவியாரை இறைஞ்சுவோம்.
