On February 28th, Thursday, at 05.07 p.m. Pope Benedict XVI left the Papal Residence at Vatican for the last time. He arrived at Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Popes, at 5.23 p.m. He greeted the people there briefly, speaking to them without any prepared text. He withdrew from the balcony around 5.30 p.m., finishing, perhaps, his final public appearance to the people.

At the stroke of 8 in the evening, the front door of Castel Gandolfo was closed and locked. The Swiss Guards, who usually give protection to the reigning Pope, handed over their duty to the Vatican police and left for Vatican. They will resume their duties once the new Pope takes over. The ring worn by Benedict XVI was broken. All these ‘rituals’ were carried out to declare to the world that the Holy See is vacant, empty! ‘Sede vacante’ (Vacant Chair) are the words now used in Vatican circles to denote that there is no one occupying the Chair of St Peter!

Whenever I use the words ‘sede vacante’, I feel a sense of unease. Two streams of thought are the cause for this uneasiness – the idea of ‘vacuum’ and the strategies employed by the media during these ‘vacuum’ days.

We know that there would be a rush of wind to fill up any vacuum. In weather forecast we are familiar with the term ‘depression’ and ‘low pressure’. We also know that when such a situation arises, the surrounding elements like air and water would rush in and form clouds, resulting in rain and even a cyclone. In a figurative way we can say that a vacuum invites trouble!

There is a vacuum in Vatican. This vacuum was forecast on February 11^th and came into effect on February 28^th. This vacuum, I am afraid, has invited media trouble. This is the reason for my uneasy feelings.

This is not the first time that there is ‘sede vacante’. It occurred in 2005 when Pope John Paul II passed away in April. It occurred when Pope John Paul I died in a matter of thirty three days after becoming the Pope. The main difference between those and the present one is that when the Holy See became empty with the death of a Pope, there were ceremonies surrounding the deceased Pope. The media was busy covering the days when the Pope’s body was laid in state.

At present, no such ‘distractions’ are available for the media and hence there are many opinions and ideas trying to fill in the vacuum in Vatican. We are aware that most of the media firms have pitched their tent in Rome to dish out stories after stories from February 11. The Cardinals, like you and me, are also reading, hearing and sometimes, speaking various aspects of the vacuum in Vatican. Are they filling up their minds with all these ‘stories’? That is my concern!

The Chair of St Peter will be filled up with due process by the Cardinals. On Monday, March 4^th, the College of Cardinals will meet at 9.30 a.m. to decide on the date of the Conclave (the official group of Cardinals that would elect the next Pope – 115 of them). Once the Cardinals gather in the famous Sistine Chapel for the Conclave they would spend some sessions reflecting on the world and the Church before going in for the voting on the next Pope. All these require time and, more importantly, PATIENCE.

The present day world which is always on the run does not seem to have patience. Not accustomed to patience, prayer and even penance in the process of electing a leader, the media is trying to make the Vatican process similar to other elections held for presidents and political leaders. This is the real danger of the media trying to fill up the vacuum of Vatican.

On the part of the Church, there are very precise procedures to make sure that this election takes place in the best spiritual atmosphere. The Conclave will take place in the famous Sistine Chapel. The Cardinals attending this Conclave will stay together in St Martha’s House very close to the Sistine Chapel. Once the date of the Conclave is announced, work will begin on St Martha’s House and in the Sistine Chapel. The television and telephone connections in these buildings will be removed. An electro magnetic shield will be installed around these buildings to cut off any mode of communication with the outside world. The Cardinals and those who will be helping out in the Conclave, once inside the Sistine Chapel, will take an oath that they will not communicate anything to the outside world. Anyone who breaks this oath, will be excommunicated!

When we read such precautions taken by the Church, we feel that the Conclave is a sacred duty of the Cardinals. It is true that the Church wishes to shield the Cardinals from any outside influence. The Church wishes to make sure that the Holy Spirit becomes the main influence in electing the successor to Benedict XVI.

Although I felt ‘safe’ when I read about the precautions taken for the process of the Conclave, my feeling of uneasiness continued. As human beings like you and me, if the Cardinals fill up their minds with all the ideas that they read, hear and speak these days prior to the Conclave, there would hardly be any space for the Holy Spirit to operate. Hence, it becomes imperative that we pray for our Cardinals that they step into the Sistine Chapel with an unbiased, non-prejudiced, non-filled up mind, open to the Holy Spirit.

The first reading from Exodus for this Sunday seems like a ‘God-sent’ in this situation. It is the famous incident of the ‘Burning Bush’, where Moses meets God for the first time. The bush was on fire and was not burnt. And Moses said, “I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” (Ex. 3:3) Once Moses became interested in the burning bush and came closer to it, he was invited by God. God was present in the burning bush and God was there as a representative of the suffering people.

This is an excellent symbol for the Conclave. Can there be a better symbol than the burning bush to represent the present world and the Church? The world and the Church are constantly burning with problems without being consumed. Our Cardinals will begin the exercise of the Conclave reflecting on the world and the Church – the burning bush! Once they pay a closer, more careful attention to this burning bush as Moses did, they are sure to hear the call of God from there, right among the burning problems.

Another parallel I would like to draw between the incident of Exodus and the Conclave is the first condition God laid down to Moses – ‘to put off his shoes’. (Ex. 3:5) Similarly, our Cardinals need to enter the Sistine Chapel putting off their baggage of accumulated thoughts, prejudices gathered from the pre-conclave days.

We pray that our Cardinals meet the Lord in the burning issues of the world and the Church, listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and thus choose a Moses according to God’s will! When Moses was chosen, he felt hesitant since he was preoccupied with his limitations. God told him to go ahead with the assurance that He would be with Moses. We also pray that the new Moses chosen by the Conclave does not get preoccupied with his assets or limitations, but take up the Leadership Mission with the assurance that God will accompany him!

பிப்ரவரி மாதத்தின் இறுதிநாள், 28ம் தேதி, வியாழனன்று உரோம் நேரம் 8 மணிக்கு திருத்தந்தையரின் கோடைவிடுமுறை இல்லமான Castel Gandolfoவின் தலைவாசல் கதவு மூடப்பட்டது. அதுவரை அவ்வில்லத்தைக் காவல் காத்த Swiss காவல் வீரர்கள், வத்திக்கான் காவல் வீரர்களிடம் தங்கள் பணியை ஒப்படைத்துவிட்டு, அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பி வத்திக்கானைச் சென்றடைந்தனர். முன்னாள் திருத்தந்தை 16ம் பெனடிக்ட் அவர்கள் தலைமைப்பொறுப்பில் இருந்தபோது அணிந்திருந்த மோதிரம் உடைக்கப்பட்டது.

இச்சடங்குகள் எல்லாம் உலகிற்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான உண்மையை எடுத்துரைத்தன. அதாவது, கடந்த எட்டு ஆண்டுகள் உரோம் மறைமாவட்டத்தின் ஆயராகவும், கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையின் தலைவராகவும் இருந்த 16ம் பெனடிக்ட் அவர்கள் தன் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பைத் துறந்ததால், திருஅவையின் தலைமைப் பீடம் காலியானது என்பதே அந்த உண்மை. Sede Vacante என்ற இத்தாலியச் சொற்களின் பொருள், வெற்றிடமான தலைமைப் பீடம் அல்லது திருப்பீடம். தலைமைப் பீடம் காலியானது அல்லது வெற்றிடமானது என்ற சொற்களை பயன்படுத்தும்போது, மனதில் சிறிது பதைபதைப்பு உருவானதை உணர்ந்தேன்.

அறிவியலின்படி, வெற்றிடம் ஒன்று உருவானால், அவ்விடத்தை நிரப்ப காற்று பல திசைகளிலிருந்தும் வரும். காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வு மண்டலத்தைப்பற்றி அடிக்கடி வானிலை அறிக்கையில் கேட்கிறோம். காற்றழுத்தம் குறைந்தாலோ, அல்லது காற்றில்லாமல் ஓரிடம் வெற்றிடமானாலோ, அவ்விடத்தை நோக்கி மேகங்கள் திரண்டு வந்து மழையும், புயலும் உருவாகும். திருஅவைத் தலைமைப்பீடத்தில் வெற்றிடம் உருவாகியுள்ளது என்பதை எண்ணியபோது, இந்த எண்ணங்களும் உள்ளத்தில் எழுந்தன. இனம்புரியாத ஒரு சங்கடத்தை உருவாக்கின.

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையின் தலைமைப் பீடத்தில் உருவாகியுள்ள வெற்றிடத்தை நிறைக்கும் பணிகள் விரைவில் ஆரம்பமாகும். அடுத்தத் தலைவரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் தகுதிபெற்ற கர்தினால்களின் சிறப்பு Conclave அவை துவங்குவதற்கு இன்னும் சில நாட்கள் ஆகும். அப்படியே அவர்கள் கூடி வந்தபின், செபத்திலும், ஆழ்ந்த விவாதங்களிலும் சில மணி நேரங்கள், அல்லது சில நாட்கள் செலவிட வேண்டியிருக்கும்.

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவை வரைமுறைகளின்படி, தலைமைப் பீடம் மீண்டும் நிறைவடைய காலம் தேவை, பொறுமை தேவை. அந்த அளவுக்குப் பொறுமையுடன் காத்திருக்கும் பக்குவம் நம் உலகிற்கு இருக்குமா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான். வெகுவேகமாக இயங்கிவரும் உலகம் இது. கேள்வி என்ற ஒன்று எழுந்த ஒரு சில நொடிகளில் பதில் கிடைக்கவேண்டும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கும் கணணி வேக உலகம் இது. அவ்விதம் உடனுக்குடன் பதில்கள் கிடைக்கவில்லையெனில், அதற்குக் காரணம் ஏதோ ஒரு பிரச்சனைதான் என்று முடிவுகட்டும் உலகம் இது. பொறுமையின்றி கேள்விகளை எழுப்பும் ஊடக உலகம், அது எதிர்பார்க்கும் பதில்கள் கிடைக்காதபோது,  தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில், கதைகளை உருவாக்கிவிடும். இத்தகைய பொறுமையற்ற உலகம், இப்போது வத்திக்கானை வலம் வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது.

உரோமையில் தற்போது தங்கியுள்ள கர்தினால்கள், ஆயர்கள், குருக்கள், அருள்சகோதரிகள், பொதுநிலையினர்... யாராக இருப்பினும், அவர்கள் கூறும் வார்த்தைகளைப் பதிவுசெய்வதில் ஊடக உலகம் மும்முரமாக உள்ளது. இவர்களது கூற்றுகளில் எவை சுவையான, பரபரப்பான எண்ணங்களாக உள்ளனவோ, அவையே தலைப்புச் செய்திகளாகி வருகின்றன. இவ்விதம் வெளியாகும் எண்ணங்களுக்கு அரசியல் வண்ணங்களும் பூசப்படுகின்றன. ஊடகத் துறைக்குத் தேவையானதெல்லாம் செய்தித்தாள்களின் பக்கங்கள் விறுவிறுப்பான செய்திகளால் நிறையவேண்டும்... தொலைக்காட்சி அல்லது வானொலி இவற்றின் 24 மணி நேரமும் சுவையான நிகழ்ச்சிகளால் நிரப்பப்பட வேண்டும். இவை மூலம் ஊடக நிறுவனங்களின்  விற்பனைத்தர புள்ளிகள் (Rating Points) கூடுதலாக வேண்டும்.

இத்தகைய வழிகளில் சிந்திக்கும் ஊடகங்கள், அடுத்தத் திருத்தந்தையின் தேர்வை ஏறத்தாழ ஓர் அரசுத் தலைவரின், அல்லது அரசியல் தலைவரின் தேர்தலைப் போல் காட்ட மேற்கொண்டுவரும் முயற்சிகள் வேதனையைத் தருகின்றன. திருஅவையின் தலைமைப் பீடத்தில் உருவாகியுள்ள வெற்றிடத்தை ஊடகங்களிலிருந்து வரும் ஆதாரமற்ற கதைகள் நிறைத்துவிடும் என்ற பதைபதைப்பைத்தான் முதலில் குறிப்பிட்டேன். ஊடகங்கள் தொடர்ந்து கூறிவரும் இவ்வகை எண்ணங்கள் நம் மனங்களை நிறைப்பதுபோல், அடுத்தத் திருத்தந்தையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கச் செல்லும் கர்தினால்களின் மனங்களையும் நிறைக்கும் என்ற எண்ணம் என் பதைபதைப்பை அதிகரிக்கிறது.

Conclave அவை என்பது கர்தினால்கள் மேற்கொள்ளவிருக்கும் ஒரு புனிதமான பணி. இந்த அவை வத்திக்கானில் உள்ள புனிதமான, உலகப்புகழ்பெற்ற Sistine சிற்றாலயத்தில் நடைபெறும். இச்சிற்றாலயத்திற்கு அருகே அமைந்திருக்கும் புனித மார்த்தா இல்லத்தில் அனைத்து கர்தினால்களும் தங்க வேண்டும். Conclave அவை ஆரம்பமாகும் தேதிக்கு முந்தைய மாலையில் மட்டுமே இவர்கள் இவ்வில்லத்திற்குள் செல்ல அனுமதிக்கப்படுவர். அதற்கு முன், இவ்வில்லத்தைச் சுற்றி பல பாதுகாப்பு வளையங்கள் அமைக்கப்படும். புனித மார்த்தா இல்லத்தில் உள்ள தொலைக்காட்சி, தொலைபேசி தொடர்புகள் துண்டிக்கப்படும். அவ்வில்லத்தைச் சுற்றி மின்காந்த அலைகளால் ஆன அரண் ஒன்று அமைக்கப்படும். அங்கு தங்குபவர்கள் வெளி உலகுடன் எவ்வகையிலும் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முடியாமல் தடுக்கும் பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் இவை.

கர்தினால்களின் எண்ணங்களும், விவாதங்களும், அவற்றின் முடிவில் அடுத்தத் திருத்தந்தையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் அவர்களின் முடிவுகளும் வெளி உலகின் தாக்கங்கள் எதுவுமின்றி நடைபெறவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் இந்த பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்யப்படும். இவற்றை மீறி, Conclave அவையில் பங்கேற்கும் கர்தினால்களில் ஒருவரோ, அல்லது இந்த அவையில் உதவிகள் செய்யும் ஒருவரோ வெளி உலகுடன் தொடர்பு கொண்டால், அவர் திருஅவையிலிருந்து விலக்கி வைக்கப்படுவார் என்ற கடுமையான சட்டமும் உண்டு.

இந்த ஏற்பாடுகள் பற்றிய செய்திகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, மனதில் ஒரு பாதுகாப்பான உணர்வு எழுகிறது. இத்தகைய பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் இருந்தாலும், Conclave அவைக்குள் செல்வதற்கு முன், கர்தினால்களின் மனம் தற்போது சுற்றிவரும் வதந்திகள், கருத்துக்கள் ஆகியவற்றால் நிறைந்துவிட்டால், அங்கு புதிய எண்ணங்கள் நுழைய வழியில்லாமல் போகும். எனவே, Conclave சிறப்பு அவை ஆரம்பமாகும் முன்னர் கர்தினால்கள் தங்கள் சிந்தனைகளைத் தேவையற்ற எண்ணங்களால் நிறைத்துவிடக் கூடாது; முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்களுடன் அவர்கள் Conclave அவைக்குள் காலடி எடுத்துவைக்கக் கூடாது என இந்நாட்களில் தூய ஆவியாரிடம் நாம் சிறப்பாக வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம். திறந்த, தூய, வெற்றிடமான மனதோடு கர்தினால்கள் இந்தச் சிறப்பு அவையில் பங்கேற்கும்போதுதான், தூய ஆவியாரின் வழிநடத்துதல் அங்கே இருக்கும்.

மேலே குறிப்பிட்ட மனநிலை கர்தினால்கள் மத்தியில் உருவாகும் என எதிர்பார்ப்பது  இன்றைய உலகில் சாத்தியமா என்ற கேள்வி நம்மில் பலருக்கு எழலாம். இத்தகையச் சந்தேகங்களை நமக்குள் ஆழமாகப் பதித்துவிட்ட இந்த உலகப் போக்குகளிலிருந்து விடுதலை பெற்று, திருஅவையின் தலைவர்கள் செயல்பட முடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையுடன் நாம் வேண்டுவோம்.

தூய ஆவியார் நமது கர்தினால்களை வழிநடத்துவார் என்ற  நம்பிக்கையை உறுதிப்படுத்த, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தை இறைவன் நமக்கு வழங்கியுள்ளார் என எண்ணிப் பார்க்கலாம். ஆடுகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த மோசேயை, எரியும் புதர் வழியாக ஆண்டவர் அழைத்த அற்புதமான நிகழ்வை இன்று நாம் சிந்திப்பது, நம் அனைவருக்கும், சிறப்பாக, நமது கர்தினால்களுக்கு இறைவன் விடுக்கும் புதியதோர் அழைப்பைப் போல் தெரிகிறது.

நாம் வாழும் இன்றைய உலகைப் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்ட, எரியும் புதரைவிடச் சிறந்த அடையாளம் இருக்கமுடியுமா? அந்தப் புதர் தொடர்ந்து எரிந்தாலும், அது தீய்ந்து போகவில்லை என்றும், அதனால் மோசே அதிகம் வியப்படைந்து அந்தப் புதரை அணுகினார் என்றும் இன்றைய வாசகம் கூறுகின்றது. “ஏன் முட்புதர் தீய்ந்து போகவில்லை? இந்த மாபெரும் காட்சியைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக நான் அப்பக்கமாகச் செல்வேன்” (விடுதலைப்பயணம் 3: 3) என்று மோசே தனக்குள் பேசிக்கொண்டே எரியும் புதரை அணுகினார். இன்றைய உலகின் பிரச்சனைகளும் தொடர்ந்து முடிவின்றி எரிந்துகொண்டிருப்பதைப் போல் நாம் உணர்கிறோம். எரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் புதரில் இறைவன் இருந்தார். அவர் வேறெங்கும் செல்லவில்லை. எகிப்தின் அடிமைத் தனத்தில் துன்புறும் மக்களின் சார்பாக, எரியும் புதரில் நின்று இறைவன் மோசேயை அழைத்தார்.

இன்றைய உலகிலும், திருஅவையிலும் தீராமல் எரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் பிரச்சனைகளின் நடுவில் நின்று, திருஅவைத் தலைவர்களான கர்தினால்களை இறைவன் அழைக்கிறார். Conclave அவையின் துவக்கத்தில் இன்றைய உலகின் நிலை, இன்றையத் திருஅவையின் நிலை ஆகியவற்றை கர்தினால்கள் ஆழ்ந்து சிந்திக்கவேண்டும் என்பது இந்த அவைக்கென வகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள விதிமுறை. தீராமல் எரிந்துகொண்டிருப்பதாய்த் தோன்றும் இவ்வுலகின் பிரச்சனைகளையும், முக்கியமாக, திருஅவையின் பிரச்சனைகளையும் இன்னும் நெருங்கிப் பார்க்க கர்தினால்கள் செல்லும்போது, அங்கு இறைவனின் அழைப்பு ஒலிக்கும்.

எரியும் புதரை நெருங்கிய மோசே, மிதியடிகளைக் கழற்றிவிட்டு வரவேண்டும் என்பது இறைவன் தரும் முதல் நிபந்தனை. அதேபோல், Conclave அவையில் நுழையும்போது, அதுவரை கர்தினால்கள் சுமந்துச்செல்லும் பல்வேறு முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்களைக் கழற்றிவைத்துவிட்டு, தாங்கள் ஒரு புனித இடத்திற்குள், ஒரு புனித பணிக்கென அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் இந்த அவையில் அவர்கள் காலடி எடுத்துவைக்க வேண்டும் என்று இறை ஆவியாரைச் சிறப்பாக வேண்டுவோம்.
