The Holy Transfiguration
A man took
his new hunting dog on a trial hunt. After a while, he managed to shoot a duck
and it fell into the lake. The dog walked on the water, picked up the duck and
brought it to his master. The man was stunned. He didn’t know what to think. He
shot another duck and again it fell into the lake and, again, the dog walked on
the water and brought it back to him. What a fantastic dog – he can walk on
water and get nothing but his paws wet. The next day he asked his neighbour to
go hunting with him so that he could show off his hunting dog, but he didn’t
tell his neighbour anything about the dog’s ability to walk on water. As on the
previous day, he shot a duck and it fell into the lake. The dog walked on the
water and got it. His neighbour didn’t say a word. Several more ducks were shot
that day and each time the dog walked over the water to retrieve them and each
time the neighbour said nothing and neither did the owner of the dog. Finally,
unable to contain himself any longer, the owner asked his neighbour, "Have
you noticed anything strange, anything different about my dog?" "Yes,"
replied the neighbour, "come to think of it, I do. Your dog doesn’t know

The neighbour could not see the wonder of a dog
that could walk on water, since he was so accustomed to seeing hunting
dogs swim. ‘Getting accustomed to’ can be a dangerous. It can narrow down our
vision and lock our perspective to a great extent. Fresh perspectives, insights
are required to clear our minds of the cobwebs of ‘the usual’. Sometimes the
‘usual’ can become too sacred as to guide our life. Lent is a good time to open
our hearts and minds to fresh beginnings. Lent is the proper time to change!
This Sunday we have two reasons to
reflect on ‘Change’. The Liturgical Readings present us with the theme of
‘Change’. That is the first reason. Today’s Gospel (Matthew 17: 1-9)
talks of the change in Jesus – his Transfiguration. The First Reading (Genesis
12: 1-4) talks of Abraham being invited to change from the known to the
unknown. In simple terms, he was asked to leave his hometown and move to a
strange place. When Abraham was invited to make this change, he was 75 years
old! (Gn. 12:4)
Last year, in March, a Bishop who was 77 years
old, was invited to make a similar change. This is the second reason for
us to reflect on ‘Change’. Yes, when Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was invited
to leave Buenos Aires
On Thursday, March 13, 2014, Pope Francis has
completed his first year as the Bishop of Rome. Ever since Pope Francis took up
this role, expectations ran high as to how he would CHANGE EVERYTHING in VATICAN
Ever since he appeared on the balcony of St
Peter’s Basilica around 8 p.m. on March 13, 2013, he had changed our
perspective on who the Pope is. Pope Francis, appeared on the balcony, wearing
a simple white cassock with a simple crucifix – no red mozzetta (red upper
piece covering the shoulders up to the waist), and no golden, ornamented
crucifix. Talk of first impressions!
What followed in the next 20 to 30 minutes confirmed that the Pope was
one of us. The first words he spoke to the world at large were: “Fratelli e
Sorelle, buona sera” – Brothers and Sisters, Good evening! It was like
listening to a Parish Priest chatting with his parishioners. The distance
between the Pope and the people dissolved that instant!
What
followed was a defining moment of CHANGE which is etched deep in my mind and
heart. I am sure millions would share these sentiments of mine. Pope Francis
requested the people to pray for him. He said:
And
now I would like to give the blessing, but first I want to ask you a favour.
Before the bishop blesses the people I ask that you would pray to the Lord to
bless me – the prayer of the people for their Bishop. Let us say this prayer –
your prayer for me – in silence.
Pope
Francis, the Supreme Pontiff of 1.2 billion Catholics around the world, bowed
down before the people and asked for their prayers. That gesture was a supreme
testimony of the type of person we have as our Holy Father. The silence that
prevailed in Peter’s Square would have left lasting impression on millions
around the world. If the Pope can bow down in prayer before the world in the
full glare of all the media, then we can be assured of many blessings!
I am sure
many of us have prayed for Popes and their intentions many times in our life.
None of them, as far as I know, have made this request to me personally. Here
was a Pope who was doing it personally. That one gesture erased all the
distance between the Pope and the people. All through this year he has
repeatedly asked people to pray for him. Even on the First Anniversary while he
was making his Annual Retreat, he had tweeted saying: “Please pray for me.” This
was a refreshing CHANGE, indeed!
In the
first year of his leadership ministry, Pope Francis has brought in many changes
on the personal level:
- Usually, after the election of
the Pope, the chosen Cardinal would sit on a special chair reserved for
the Pope and all the other Cardinals in the Conclave would pay their
respectful obedience to him. When Cardinal Bergoglio was chosen, he did
not sit on that chair; instead he greeted all the Cardinals, standing. In
the past one year, Pope Francis has kept up this practice of meeting
others, standing.
- In the House of St Martha where
he continues to stay, he serves his own meals and sits down in any
available chair, with other members of the community.
- He brought sandwiches to the
Swiss Guard standing near his room.
- He sent money to a senior lady
who had lost her money while travelling in a bus.
- He keeps calling people directly
over the phone and gives them pleasant surprises. For the First

Sono Francesco. Il Papa e la rivoluzione comunicativa un
anno dopo” (Hello? This

Looking
back on the first year of Pope Francis in Vatican
- Persons who have left the
Church for many years have returned to the Church after seeing Pope
Francis.
- The simplicity of Pope Francis
has set in motion changes in other ‘leaders’ of the Church, who have begun
to see themselves not as leaders but ministers (meaning, servants).
- People’s idea has become more
focussed and clear as to how their pastors and bishops should be – in
terms of their residence, their dress, and the vehicles and gadgets they
use. Bishops in

Pope Francis does not achieve anything significant as the Bishop of Rome, the
very fact that he had made the Pope an accessible, ordinary human being is a
very big achievement, indeed. I call this a very BIG achievement since I
believe that this ‘accessibility’ will set in motion many other changes in
Vatican and in the entire Church, perhaps extending its influence even to the
rest of the world. If the Pope is an ordinary human person, then, naturally,
the others – namely, the Cardinals, the Bishops and the Priests are human
beings as well. They cannot hoist themselves on pedestals and build protective
walls around them. When walls and pedestals break down, fresh breeze can come
in! The Church seems to be undergoing a ‘transfiguration’ with the help of a
wave that is sweeping over Vatican
Waves
always move forward. They are not stagnant nor go back! Waves are a good sign
of life and change! Let ‘Pope Francis Wave’ which was set in motion on March
13, 2013, continue to create ripples.

வாங்கிய வேட்டைநாயுடன் ஒருவர் ஏரிக்கருகே வேட்டையாடச் சென்றார். அவர் சுட்ட பறவை ஏரியில்
விழுந்ததும், வேட்டைநாய், ஏரி நீர்பரப்பின்மீது நடந்து சென்று பறவையைக் கொணர்ந்தது. இதைக்
கண்ட வேட்டைக்காரருக்குப் பெரும் வியப்பு. அவர் மீண்டும் ஒரு பறவையைச் சுட்டு, அது நீரில்
விழுந்ததும், மீண்டும் அந்த வேட்டைநாய் நீரின்மீது நடந்துசென்று
பறவையைக் கவ்வி வந்தது.
அடுத்தநாள், அவர் தன் நண்பர் ஒருவரை வேட்டைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார். தன் வேட்டைநாயின்
அற்புதத் திறமையை நண்பர் காணவேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே அவரை அழைத்துச் சென்றிருந்தார்.
தன் நாயைப்பற்றி அவர் நண்பரிடம் எதுவும் சொல்லவில்லை. அவராகவே அதைக்கண்டு வியக்கட்டும்
என்று எண்ணியிருந்தார்.
அவர்
ஒரு பறவையைச் சுடவே, அது நீரில் வீழ்ந்தது. அவரது வேட்டைநாய்
நீரின்மீது நடந்துசென்று பறவையை எடுத்துவந்தது. இதைக்கண்ட தன் நண்பர் வியப்பில் கூச்சலிடுவார்
என்று எதிர்பார்த்த வேட்டைக்காரருக்குப் பெரும் ஏமாற்றம். நண்பர் எதுவும் சொல்லவில்லை.
மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை அவர் ஒரு பறவையைச் சுடவே,
மீண்டும் அந்த நாய்
நீரின்மீது நடக்கும் சாகசத்தைச் செய்தது. நண்பரிடம் எந்த மாற்றமும் இல்லை.
பொறுமை
இழந்த வேட்டைக்காரர், நண்பரிடம், "என் வேட்டைநாயிடம் ஏதாவது வித்தியாசம் தெரிகிறதா?" என்று கேட்டார். சிறிது நேரம் சிந்தனையில் மூழ்கிய அந்த நண்பர், "ஆம்... உன் வேட்டைநாய்க்கு நீச்சல் அடிக்கத் தெரியவில்லை"
என்று கூறினார்.
கண்மூடித்தனமாக
அந்த நண்பர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு, சிரிப்பதா, வேதனைப்படுவதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. வேட்டைநாய்கள் என்றால் நீச்சல்
அடிக்கவேண்டும் என்ற கருத்திலேயே ஊறிப்போன அந்த நண்பருக்கு, அந்த நாய் நீரின்மீது நடந்தது வியப்பாகத் தெரியவில்லை. அதற்கு நீச்சல்
அடிக்கத் தெரியவில்லை என்புது மட்டுமே குறையாகத் தெரிந்தது.
இவை, இவை இப்படித்தான் இருக்கும், இருக்கவேண்டும்
என்ற கண்ணோட்டத்தில் ஊறிப்போகும் நம் சிந்தனைச் சங்கிலிகளை, பழக்கவழக்கங்களை உடைத்தெறிவதற்கும், மாற்றங்களை மனதார வரவேற்பதற்கும் இந்த ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள் நமக்கு
அழைப்பு விடுக்கின்றன. மனித வாழ்வை மேம்படுத்த,
மாற்றங்கள் தேவை
என்பதை நமக்கு நினைவுறுத்தும் காலம், தவக்காலம்.
தவக்காலத்தின்
2ம் ஞாயிறன்று, இயேசுவின் தோற்றமாற்றம் நமக்கு நற்செய்தியாக
வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதேபோல், தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள
இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமும் மாற்றத்தைப் பற்றி கூறுகிறது. தனக்குப் பழக்கமான ஓர் இடத்தைவிட்டு, மற்றொரு இடத்திற்குச் செல்லவேண்டிய மாற்றம் ஆபிரகாமுக்கு ஏற்பட்டது.
மாற்றங்களை சந்திக்க, இளவயது பொருத்தமானது, வயது முதிர்ந்த காலத்தில் மாற்றங்கள் வரும்போது, அவற்றை ஏற்பதற்குப் பெரும் தயக்கம் நமக்குள் உருவாகும். தான் பிறந்துவளர்ந்த

இன்னும் இரண்டு வயது கூடுதலாக, அதாவது, தன் 77வது வயதில், ஆயர் ஒருவர், தான் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த நாட்டிலிருந்து, பணிசெய்த மறைமாவட்டத்திலிருந்து மற்றொரு நாட்டிற்குச் செல்ல அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.

Aires) பிறந்து அங்கேயேப் பேராயராகப் பணியாற்றிய கர்தினால் ஹோர்கெ
மாரியோ பெர்கோலியோ (Jorge Mario Bergoglio)
அவர்கள், தன் 77வது வயதில், பணிஒய்வைப்பற்றி சிந்தித்துக்
கொண்டிருந்த வேளையில், பெரியதொரு மாற்றத்திற்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டார்.
கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையில் முன்னாள் திருத்தந்தை 16ம் பெனடிக்ட் அவர்கள் உருவாக்கிய
ஒரு வரலாற்று மாற்றத்தின் எதிரொலியாக, கடந்த ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதம் வத்திக்கானில்
கூடிய கர்தினால்கள், 76வயது நிரம்பிய கர்தினால் பெர்கோலியோ
அவர்களை, திருஅவையின் தலைவராகத் தெரிவு செய்தனர்.
அர்ஜென்டினாவிலிருந்து அகில உலகத்திற்கு மாறச்சொல்லி கர்தினால் பெர்கோலியோ அவர்கள்
பெற்ற இந்த அழைப்பு, மாற்றங்களை வலியுறுத்தும் தவக்காலத்தின்போது
நிகழ்ந்தது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
மார்ச்
13, கடந்த வியாழனன்று, திருஅவையின் தலைமைப் பணியில் தன் முதல் ஆண்டை நிறைவு செய்துள்ளத்
திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், மாற்றங்களைப்பற்றி சில பாடங்களைச்
சொல்லித் தந்துள்ளார். திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் பொறுப்பேற்றதும், திருஅவையில் மாற்றங்களைக் கொணர்வார் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பிற்கு அவர்
அவ்வப்போது அளித்துவரும் பதில் இதுதான்: "திருஅவையில் மாற்றங்கள் உருவாக, ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் மாற்றங்கள் நிகழவேண்டும்"
என்ற கருத்தை அவர் வலியுறுத்தி வருகிறார். தனிப்பட்ட மனிதர் என்ற முறையில் அவர் இதுவரை
கொணர்ந்துள்ள மாற்றங்கள், நம் அனைவருக்கும் ஓர் உந்துசக்தியாய்
அமைந்துள்ளன.
கடந்த
ஆண்டு, மார்ச் 13ம் தேதி, இரவு எட்டு மணியளவில், கர்தினால் பெர்கோலியோ அவர்கள், புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தின் மேல் மாடத்தில், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் என்று அறிமுகம் ஆனபோது அவர் அணிந்திருந்த
எளிய உடையே மாற்றத்தை உணர்த்தியது. அவர் மக்கள் முன், உலக ஊடகங்களின் முன் கூறிய முதல் வார்த்தைகள், மாற்றத்தை உணர்த்தின: "சகோதரர்களே, சகோதரிகளே, மாலை வணக்கம்" என்று திருத்தந்தை
பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் கூறிய வார்த்தைகள், அங்கு கூடியிருந்த ஒரு இலட்சத்திற்கும்
அதிகமான மக்களுக்கும், இன்னும் ஊடகங்களின் வழியே பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த
பலகோடி மக்களுக்கும், திருத்தந்தைக்கும், இடையே இருந்த தூரத்தை வெகுவாகக் குறைத்தன. உலகில் வாழும் 100 கோடிக்கும்
மேற்பட்ட கத்தோலிக்க மக்களின் தலைவர் என்ற முறையில் பேசும் திருத்தந்தை, உயர்வான எண்ணங்கள் பொதிந்த வார்த்தைகளையே முதலில் பேசுவார் என்று
நிலவிவந்த கருத்தை மாற்றி, நானும் உங்களில் ஒருவன்தான் என்பதை, அவர் சொன்ன 'மாலை வணக்கம்' என்ற வார்த்தைகள் பறைசாற்றின.
அதுமட்டுமல்ல, அடுத்த 30 நிமிடங்கள் அவர் சொன்னவை, செய்தவை அனைத்தும், அவரை மக்களில் ஒருவராக மீண்டும்
மீண்டும் காட்டின. உரோமையின் ஆயராகிய தான் மக்களை அசீர்வதிப்பதற்கு முன், மக்கள் தனக்காகச் செபிக்கவேண்டும் என்று விண்ணப்பித்த திருத்தந்தை
பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், மக்கள் முன் தலைவணங்கி நின்றார். அந்த
சில மணித்துளிகள், பலகோடி மக்களின் மனங்களில் இனம்புரியாத
மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கின.
மறக்கமுடியாத
இந்த அறிமுகத்திற்குப் பிறகு, கடந்த ஓராண்டளவாக திருத்தந்தை
சொன்னவை, செய்தவை பலவும் அவரை ஒரு மனிதப் பிறவி
என்று மக்கள் மனதில் ஆணித்தரமாகப் பதித்தன.

மார்த்தா இல்லத்தில் தன் உணவை தானே பரிமாறிக்கொண்டு, மற்றவருடன் உண்பது...

நீண்டுசெல்லும் பட்டியலில் நாம் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் காண்பது ஒரே ஒரு மாற்றம்தான்...
திருத்தந்தை என்பவர், வெகு, வெகு எளிதாக தொட்டுவிடக்கூடிய ஒரு சாதாரண மனிதர் என்ற அர்த்தமுள்ள
ஒரு மாற்றம்.
திருத்தந்தை
பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், தலைமைப் பணியில் நீடிக்கும் ஆண்டுகளில்
பெரும் சாதனைகள் எதையும் ஆற்றாமல் போனாலும் கவலையில்லை. திருஅவையின் தலைவர், ஏனைய மனிதர்களைப் போல் ஒரு சாதாரண மனிதர் என்ற ஒரு மாற்றத்தை அவர்
உருவாக்கிச் சென்றால், அதுவே ஒரு பெரும் சாதனைதான்.
திருத்தந்தையே
ஒரு சாதாரண மனிதர்தான் என்பதை இவ்வுலக மக்கள்,
குறிப்பாக, கத்தோலிக்க மக்கள் புரிந்துகொண்டால், திருஅவையில் ஆரோக்கியமான மாற்றங்கள் உருவாகும். அருள் பணியாளர், ஆயர், பேராயர், கர்தினால், திருத்தந்தை என்று பணி நிலைகள்
உயர, உயர, அந்நிலைகளைச்
சுற்றி சுவர்கள் எழுப்பப்பட்டு, அந்நிலைகளில் உள்ளோரை எட்டாத உயரத்தில்
பீடமேற்றும் பழக்கங்கள் மாறும்போது, திருஅவை இன்னும் நலமுள்ள ஓர் இயக்கமாக
மாறும்.
உலகக்
கவனத்தை ஈர்க்க, இயேசு தன் தோற்றத்தை மாற்றவேண்டும் என்று
அலகை தூண்டியதை சென்றவாரம் சிந்தித்தோம். அலகையின் யோசனையைப் பின்பற்றி, இயேசு எருசலேம் கோவிலிலிருந்து குதித்திருந்தால், யூதர்கள் மத்தியில், உரோமையர்கள் மத்தியில் பரபரப்பான
மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கியிருப்பார். அத்தகைய மாற்றங்களை விரும்பாத இயேசு, தன் மூன்று சீடர்களுக்கு முன் தோற்றமாற்றம் பெறுகிறார் என்று இந்த
வார நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. இந்த மாற்றம், சீடர்களின் உள்ளங்களில் நலமிக்க
மாற்றங்களைக் கொணரும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் இயேசு தன் தோற்றமாற்றம் என்ற அருளை சீடர்களுக்கு
வழங்குகிறார்.
என்னைப்
பொருத்தவரை, திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களது பணிவாழ்வின்
முதலாம் ஆண்டில், ஊடகங்களின் கவனத்தைக் கவர்ந்த மாற்றங்கள், வெளிப்படையாக உருவாகியுள்ளன. அதேநேரம், விளம்பரங்கள் ஏதுமில்லாத மாற்றங்கள் பலவற்றிற்கும் அவர் காரணமாக
இருந்தார். இவற்றை முக்கியமான மாற்றங்களாக நான் கருதுகிறேன்.
- பல ஆண்டுகளாகக் கோவில் பக்கமே
செல்லாத கிறிஸ்தவர்கள், இவர் தலைமைப் பணியை ஏற்ற
ஒரு சில நாட்களில், கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றுள்ளனர்
என்பது விளம்பரம் ஆகாத உண்மை.
- திருத்தந்தை அவர்களின் எளிமையான
பணிவாழ்வால், திருஅவை தலைவர்களைப் பற்றி மக்களின்
பார்வை தெளிவும், கூர்மையும் பெற்றுள்ளது என்பது
வரவேற்கத்தக்க ஒரு மாற்றம்.
- தலைவர்கள் என்று தங்களையே
எண்ணிவந்தவர்கள், இன்று தங்களை, திருஅவையின் பணியாளர்கள் என்று எண்ண முயற்சி செய்து வருகின்றனர்.
- திருஅவைப் பணியாளர்களின்
உறைவிடங்கள், உடைகள், பயன்படுத்தும் வாகனங்கள், சாதனங்கள்...
மாற்றம் பெறவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணங்கள் மக்கள் மத்தியில் வலுவடைந்து வருகின்றன. ஜெர்மனியிலும், அமெரிக்காவிலும் இரு ஆயர்கள் தங்கள் இல்லங்களை அழகுபடுத்த
செய்த செலவைப்பற்றி மக்கள் கேள்விகள் கேட்டனர்.
இவையாவும், வரவேற்கத்தக்க மாற்றங்கள். மக்கள் மத்தியில் உருவாகிவரும் இந்த
மாற்றங்கள் தொடரும் என்று நம்பிக்கை கொள்வோம்.
வத்திக்கான்
என்ற நீர்நிலையில் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் வடிவத்தில் விழுந்த ஒரு கல், அலைகளை உருவாக்கி வருகின்றது என்பது ஆனந்தம் தரும் நற்செய்தி.
"திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அலை" இன்னும் பல ஆண்டுகள், நலமிக்க மாற்றங்களை திருஅவையிலும் இவ்வுலகிலும் உருவாக்கவேண்டும்
என்று இறைவனை இறைஞ்சுவோம்.
தன்
தோற்றமாற்றத்திற்குப் பிறகு, இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுக்கு விடுத்த
அழைப்பு: "எழுந்திருங்கள். அஞ்சாதீர்கள்." தாங்கள் கண்ட அதிசயக் காட்சியிலிருந்து
அவர்கள் எழுந்து, மலையைவிட்டு இறங்கினர். அடுத்தநாள் பிரச்சனைகளைச்
சந்திக்கத் துணிந்தனர்.
திருத்தந்தை
பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களுடன் இணைந்து, நம் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும், கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையிலும், கிறிஸ்தவர்கள்
மத்தியிலும், மனித சமுதாயத்திலும் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்க
முதலில் நம்மிடம் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்குவோம். இதற்கு, நாம் ஏறி
நிற்கும் மமதை மலையிலிருந்து நாம் இறங்குவோம். நம்முன் மலைபோல் குவிந்திருக்கும் பிரச்சனைகளைக்
கண்டு மலைத்துவிடாமல், நலமிக்க மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்குவோம்.
