We live in a world filled, rather, ‘over-loaded’ with information. It is so filled that there is not much room for personal interpretations and hence, no room for transformation. One of my most favourite books on media is “Amusing Ourselves to Death” written by Neil Postman. This is a scathing criticism on what television had done to the American Society in the 80s. What was written by Postman in 1985 is still very relevant for the U.S. and, unfortunately, it is now almost a universal phenomenon.

One of the accusations that Postman levels against TV is, that it has kept our human family ‘amused to death’. He says that TV has turned EVERYTHING (be it politics, religion, sports, stock market etc.) into ENTERTAINMENT, including news. We are submerged in an ocean of information which keeps us fully soaked and completely passive. Add to this, the other gadgets of communication and social networks, like facebook, whatsapp… and our deluge of information and entertainment has become a destructive tsunami.

The Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, talks about our insatiable thirst for entertainment in a parable. He tells the parable of a theater where people are entertained. Here is what Kierkegaard says in his book “Either/Or”: “A fire broke out backstage in a theatre. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. So I think the world will come to an end amid general applause from all the wits, who believe that it is a joke.” – (Either/Or, vol. I, p. 30)

Warnings come to us in different forms. If we are part of the cheering crowd, ‘amusing ourselves to death’, this Sunday gives us one more opportunity to wake up.  Today’s readings warn us about the “Day of the Lord” that dawns on us quite unexpectedly.

We have come to the end of another liturgical year. Next Sunday we shall celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and the week after, we begin a new liturgical year with Advent. When we began this liturgical year last November, we were given a passage from Luke 21 (verses 25-28; 34-36). As we close the liturgical year, we are given a passage, again, from Luke 21 (verses 5-19). Both talk of the end of the world… Is this the best way to begin and end a liturgical year? Talk of the frightening end? I am not a great fan of the frightening part of the end, as most Hollywood films revel in. But, I do believe that the thought of our end, whether imminent or far off, can surely put things in perspective. If only all of us can be convinced, that we are all pilgrims on earth, so many problems would be solved.

Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus standing in Jerusalem temple and predicting how that magnificent structure would be destroyed. It requires lots of courage for anyone to do this – namely, stand right in the middle of the holiest spot for the Israelites and tell them that it would be totally destroyed. One can easily assign this courage (call it bravado?) of Jesus to his divine quality of knowing past-present-and-future. But, we can also see it as part of our way of ‘predicting the future’. Most of us do have premonitions of our own or some one else’s life, from the way that life shapes up. The same premonition can be had for an institution too, by the way it is run. Jesus, from the age of twelve, must have been intrigued by the commercialism that surrounded the temple of Jerusalem. At the age of 33, he felt he had had enough of that and he tried his best to cleanse the temple (Luke 19: 45-46). He probably saw that the temple was returning to its commercial ways just a few days later.

Here are the opening lines of today’s Gospel: Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” (Luke 21:5-6)

This is how I would like to rephrase the thoughts / words of Jesus: “You seem to admire these beautiful stones and the ‘gifts’ adorning this temple. These very same things are going to draw the envious eyes of other nations. The wealth that surrounds this temple is going to be its undoing. It would be destroyed.” It does not require a great prophetic quality to predict what would happen to an individual or an institution if only we can observe closely. Simple logic would be sufficient!

This warning given by Jesus brings to mind the present day Churches, Temples and Mosques that pride themselves as the largest, richest, greatest, tallest… etc. The more wealth is accumulated in places of worship, the greater they have to rely on fortress-like walls. Instead of relying on stone walls, if all the places of worship relied on the community of worshippers, religion will become more humane and, hence, divine!

Jesus does not stop with his prediction of the temple alone. He goes on to predict what would happen to the world and, more especially, what would become of those who follow him. He begins with those who would mislead people with ‘divine revelations’, those who would exploit the anxiety of people about the end of the world. Didn’t we hear enough of these ‘revelations’ at the turn of this millennium? The list of things Jesus had predicted almost read like our headlines today… “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.” (Lk 21: 10-11)

In the following lines (12-19) Jesus turns his attention to his disciples. Jesus calls a spade, a spade. If his aim was to retain a crowd around him all the time, he would not have revealed such bitter truths… the price to be paid for following him. Betrayal from one's own family, murdering courageous witnesses in order to silence them... Once again, what Jesus lists out here seems to be happening today. I am thinking of the massacre that took place in the Sunday liturgy in Baghdad on October 31.

Out of all these 15 verses given in today’s Gospel, only three verses give hopeful, soothing words. “For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict… not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.” (Luke 21: 15, 18-19). The ‘life’ Jesus is talking of, is the afterlife we mentioned in our last Sunday’s reflection.

In my last week’s reflection I spoke about Randy Pausch, the professor who passed away in his forties. I had also mentioned about ‘The Last Lecture’ he had given to his university staff and students. I was fortunate also to listen to the talk he gave his students on their graduation day. Here is the gist of what he said: “Pursue your dreams with passion. Before you begin pursuing, make sure what type of dreams you are chasing. Let them not be dreams to acquire more money. Those dreams will not give you satisfaction, since there would always be someone who would have more money than you. Rather follow dreams of building up human relationships.”

Relationships will save us, not money or possessions. This is exactly what Jesus is saying in today’s Gospel. This is the assurance that Jesus himself experienced in his personal life. But for his personal relationship with his Father he would have been crushed in his life. As we go through life, especially the toughest phases of our life, we can be assured that God will be with us, Christ will be with us.

பொதுக்காலம் - 33ம் ஞாயிறு - ஞாயிறு சிந்தனை

தத்துவ இயல் மேதைகளில் ஒருவரான சோரென் கீர்க்ககார்ட் (Søren Kierkegaard) அவர்கள், நாடக அரங்கத்தை மையமாக வைத்து, ஓர் உவமை கூறியுள்ளார்.

ஓர் அரங்கத்தில், அலைமோதும் கூட்டத்தின் நடுவே நாடகம் அரங்கேறி வருகிறது. அடுத்தடுத்து வரும் காட்சிகள், ஒன்றையொன்று விஞ்சும் அளவு விறுவிறுப்பாக இருப்பதால், மக்கள் தொடர்ந்து, ஆரவாரமாய், கைதட்டி இரசிக்கின்றனர்.

அவ்வேளையில், திடீரென, திரைக்குப் பின்புறமிருந்து மேடைக்கு ஓடிவரும் கோமாளி, "மக்களே, அவசரமான ஓர் அறிவிப்பு... மேடையின் பின்புறத்தில் தீப்பிடித்துள்ளது. எனவே, தயவுசெய்து, விரைவாக இங்கிருந்து வெளியேறுங்கள்" என்று கத்துகிறார்.

அவர் அப்படி கத்துவதை, நாடகத்தின் நகைச்சுவைப் பகுதி என்று மக்கள் கருதி, ஆரவாரமாய் கைதட்டி இரசிக்கின்றனர். கோமாளியோ, கரங்களைக் கூப்பி, கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிய, மேடையில் முழந்தாள் படியிட்டு, "தயவுசெய்து வெளியேறுங்கள்" என்று கெஞ்சுகிறார். ஆனால், அவர் அற்புதமாக நடிக்கிறார் என்று கூட்டம் பாராட்டுகிறது. திடீரென, அந்த அரங்கம் முழுவதும் தீயால் சூழ்ந்து, அனைவரும் தீக்கிரையாகின்றனர்.

"உலக முடிவும் இதுபோல்தான் இருக்கும். அந்த உண்மையை ஒரு வேடிக்கை என்று எண்ணுவோரின் கரவொலியோடு, இவ்வுலகம் முடியும்" என்று கீர்க்ககார்ட் அவர்கள், தன் உவமையை நிறைவு செய்துள்ளார்.

வாழ்வில் பல வேளைகளில், பல வடிவங்களில் வந்தடையும் எச்சரிக்கைகளில் கவனம் செலுத்தாமல், அனைத்தையும் விளையாட்டாக இரசித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பவர்களில், நாமும் ஒருவரெனில், இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு, மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை, நம்மை விழித்தெழச் செய்கிறது.

திருவழிபாட்டு ஆண்டின் இறுதி ஞாயிறு இது. அடுத்த ஞாயிறு கிறிஸ்து அரசர் பெருவிழா. அதற்கடுத்த ஞாயிறு துவங்கும் திருவருகைக் காலம், புதிய திருவழிபாட்டு ஆண்டைத் ஆரம்பித்துவைக்கிறது. இந்த ஞாயிறு, உலகமெங்கும் குறிக்கப்பட்ட ஆலயங்களில் திறக்கப்பட்டப் புனிதக்கதவுகள் மூடப்படுகின்றன. அடுத்தவாரம், புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தில் புனிதக்கதவு மூடப்படும். அத்துடன், நாம் கொண்டாடிவரும் இரக்கத்தின் சிறப்பு யூபிலி நிறைவடையும். யூபிலி ஆண்டு நிறைவுற்றாலும், இரக்கம் நம் வாழ்வில் தொடரவேண்டும் என்பதை நினைவுறுத்த, யூபிலியின் இறுதி இரு வாரங்களில் வத்திக்கானில் இரு கொண்டாட்டங்கள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. சென்ற ஞாயிறு, சிறைப்பட்டோரின் யூபிலி, இந்த ஞாயிறு, சமுதாயத்தால் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டோரின் யூபிலி.

இரக்கத்தின் சிறப்பு யூபிலியாக நாம் சிறப்பித்த இந்த வழிபாட்டு ஆண்டு முழுவதும், இரக்கத்தின் நற்செய்தி என்று அழைக்கப்படும் லூக்கா நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து நாம் வாசித்த அற்புதப் பகுதிகள் வழியாக, இறைவன் நம்மை இரக்கச் சிந்தனைகளில் நிறைத்ததற்காக அவருக்கு நன்றி கூறுவோம்.

நற்செய்தியின் அற்புதப் பகுதிகள் என்று சொன்னதும், எல்லாமே மனதிற்கு இதமானதைச் சொல்லும் பகுதிகள் என்று பொருள் கொள்ளக்கூடாது. நற்செய்தி என்றால், நல்லதைச் சொல்லும் செய்தி. அந்த நல்ல செய்தி, சில வேளைகளில், அச்சத்தையும், அதிர்ச்சியையும் உண்டாக்கும். நல்லவை நடக்கவேண்டும் என்ற ஆதங்கத்தோடு தரப்படும் எச்சரிக்கையும், நல்ல செய்திதானே! இந்தக் கண்ணோட்டத்துடன் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியை நாம் சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். இன்று நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள நற்செய்தி வாசகத்தில், 15 இறைச்சொற்றொடர்கள் உள்ளன. அவற்றில் 13 இறைச்சொற்றொடர்கள் அழிவைக் கூறுகின்றன. இதோ, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் துவக்க வரிகள்...

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 21: 5-6

அக்காலத்தில், கோவிலைப் பற்றிச் சிலர் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். கவின்மிகு கற்களாலும், நேர்ச்சைப் பொருள்களாலும் கோவில் அழகுபடுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது என்று சிலர் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். இயேசு, “இவற்றையெல்லாம் பார்க்கிறீர்கள் அல்லவா? ஒரு காலம் வரும்; அப்போது கற்கள் ஒன்றின் மேல் ஒன்று இராதபடி இவையெல்லாம் இடிக்கப்படும்” என்றார்.

இப்படி ஆரம்பமாகிறது, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி. இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் மதநம்பிக்கைக்கு உயிர்நாடியாக விளங்கிய எருசலேம் பேராலயத்தின் நடுவில் நின்றுகொண்டு, அந்தப் பேராலயம், கல்மேல் கல் இராதபடி இடிந்து தரைமட்டமாகும் என்று இயேசு கூறுகிறார். அவ்விதம் கூறுவதற்குத் தனிப்பட்ட ஒரு துணிவு வேண்டும். பின்வருவதை முன்கூட்டியே அறியும் அருள் இயேசுவுக்கு இருந்ததால், அவரால் இவ்வளவு உறுதியாகப் பேச முடிந்ததென்று, இந்த வீரத்திற்கு நாம் விளக்கம் சொல்லலாம்.

ஆனால், அதேநேரம், தனிப்பட்ட ஒருவரது வாழ்வு போகின்ற திசை, அவர் நடந்து கொள்ளும் முறை இவற்றை வைத்து, அவர் வாழ்வு அழிவை நோக்கிப் போகிறதா அல்லது மகிழ்வை நோக்கிப் போகிறதா என்று கணிக்கமுடியும், இல்லையா? அதேபோல், ஒரு நிறுவனம் நடத்தப்படும் முறையை வைத்தும் அதன் எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூறலாம். எருசலேம் கோவில், எவ்விதம் நிர்வகிக்கப்பட்டது என்பதை இயேசு ஆழமாய் உணர்ந்து, வெளிப்படுத்திய எண்ணங்களே, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.

இயேசுவைப் பொருத்தவரை, அவர் 12 வயதிலிருந்தே, எருசலேம் ஆலயம் நடத்தப்பட்ட முறையைப் பார்த்து கவலைப்பட்டிருப்பார். அவரது கவலை, ஆதங்கம் இவற்றை ஒரு சாட்டையாகப் பின்னி, அந்த ஆலயத்தை அவர் தூய்மைப்படுத்தினார். (லூக்கா 19: 45-46) அதற்குப் பின்னும், அந்த ஆலயம், மீண்டும் தன் பழைய வியாபார நிலைக்குத் திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்ததைப் பார்த்த இயேசு, இவ்வளவு தூரம் வருமானம் சேர்க்கும் அக்கோவில், நிச்சயம் பிற நாட்டவரின் பொறாமைப் பார்வையில் படும். அக்கோவில் சேர்த்துள்ள செல்வமே, அதன் அழிவுக்குக் காரணமாய் இருக்கும் என்பதை, சொல்லாமல் சொல்லும் வண்ணம், இயேசு, இந்த எச்சரிக்கை வார்த்தைகளைச் சொல்லியிருக்க வேண்டும்.

செல்வம் சேர்க்கும் நிறுவனங்களாக மாறும் கோவில்கள், கற்களால் எழுப்பப்படும் கோட்டைகளாக மாறிவிடுகின்றன. கோவிலில் உள்ள கடவுளைக் காப்பதைவிட, செல்வத்தைக் காப்பதற்காக வலுவானக் கற்சுவர்களை அமைத்துக்கொள்கின்றன. கற்களை நம்பி உயர்ந்து நிற்கும் கோவில்களுக்குப் பதில், மக்களை நம்பி எழுப்பப்படும் உண்மை ஆலயங்களை, அனைத்து மதங்களும் கட்டவேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம்.

முதல் இரு இறைச்சொற்றொடர்களில், எருசலேம் கோவிலின் அழிவுபற்றி பேசும் இயேசு, அதன் பின், உலகில் நிகழப்போகும் அழிவுகளைப்பற்றி கூறியுள்ளார். அவர் பட்டியலிட்டுக் கூறும் அவலங்களை அலசினால், ஏதோ நாம் வாழும் இக்காலத்தைப்பற்றி இயேசு பேசுவது போல் தெரிகிறது. இதோ, இயேசு கூறும் அந்த அவலங்கள்:

·          கடவுளின் பெயரால், உலகம் அழியப்போகிறது என்ற பயத்தால், மக்களை வழிமாறிப் போகச் செய்தல்;

·          போர் முழக்கங்கள், குழப்பங்கள், ஒன்றை ஒன்று எதிர்த்து எழும் நாடுகள்;

·          பெரிய நில நடுக்கங்கள், பஞ்சம், கொள்ளை நோய்;

·          அச்சுறுத்தும் அடையாளங்கள் வானில் தோன்றுதல்…

இவை அனைத்தும், நாம் வாழும் காலத்திலும் நம்மைச் சுற்றி நடப்பதை நாம் பார்த்து வருகிறோம். இந்த அவலங்களுக்கு, அழிவுகளுக்கு மத்தியில், கலங்காமல் இருங்கள் என்று இயேசு கூறுவது, நமக்கு விடுக்கப்படும் பெரும் சவால்!

இயற்கையிலும், சமுதாயத்திலும் நடக்கும் இந்த பயங்கரங்களைக் கூறிவிட்டு, பின்னர் நமது தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்வை, குறிப்பாக, தம்மைப் பின்பற்றுகிறவர்களின் வாழ்வை  வெளிச்சம்போட்டுக் காட்டுகிறார், இயேசு. அங்கும், அவர் சொல்பவை, அச்சத்தையும் கலக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தும் ஒரு பட்டியல்தான்.

·          நீங்கள் விசாரணைகளுக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்லப்படுவீர்கள்;

·          உங்கள் குடும்பத்தினரே உங்களைக் காட்டிக் கொடுப்பார்கள்;

·          உங்களுக்கு எதிராகச் சான்று பகர்வார்கள்;

·          உங்களுள் சிலரைக் கொல்வார்கள்;

·          என்பெயரின் பொருட்டு எல்லாரும் உங்களை வெறுப்பார்கள்…

இயேசு கூறும் இத்தகையத் துன்பங்களை தங்கள் வாழ்வில் ஒவ்வொருநாளும் சந்திக்கும் பல கிறிஸ்தவர்களைப் பற்றி அடிக்கடி செய்திகள் வெளியாகி வருகின்றன. கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக வன்முறைகளைச் சந்திக்கும் இவர்களுக்காக இன்று சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.

இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறிய இந்த அழிவுகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, இது என்ன நற்செய்தியா என்றுகூட கேட்கத் தோன்றுகிறது. மீண்டும் நினைவில் கொள்வோம். நற்செய்தி என்றால், இனிப்பான செய்தி அல்ல. நமக்குள் வளரும் ஒரு நோயை நமக்குச் சுட்டிக்காட்டும் மருத்துவரை எதிரி என்றா நாம் கூறுகிறோம்? கசப்பான மருந்துகளைத் தரும் அவரை, நன்மை செய்பவர் என்று நாம் நம்புவதில்லையா? அதேபோல், இயேசுவும், இவ்வுலகைப் பற்றிய கசப்பான உணமைகளைச் சொல்கிறார். முக்கியமாக, தன்னைப் பின்பற்றுகிறவர்களுக்கு வரவிருக்கும் சவால்களை ஒளிவு மறைவு இல்லாமல் தெளிவாக்குகிறார். தனக்குச் சீடர்கள் வேண்டும், தன்னைச் சுற்றி எப்போதும் கூட்டம் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று அவர் நினைத்திருந்தால், கசப்பான உண்மைகளைச் சொல்லத் தேவையில்லையே!

தொண்டர்களைத் தவறான வழி நடத்தும் தலைவர்கள், எதிர்வரும் ஆபத்துக்களைச் சொல்லத் தயங்குவார்கள். அப்படியே ஆபத்துக்கள் வரும்போதும், உண்மைப் பிரச்சனைகளிலிருந்து தொண்டர்களைத் திசைத்திருப்பி, வெறியூட்டும் பாகுபாட்டு உணர்வுகளை வளர்த்து, தேவையில்லாமல் உயிர்களைப் பறிக்கும் வழிகளையேக் காட்டுவர், இந்தப் போலித் தலைவர்கள். இயேசுவின் வழி, மாறுபட்ட வழி...

இத்தனைப் பிரச்சனைகளின் மத்தியிலும் இயேசு தரும் ஒரே வாக்குறுதி... அவரது பிரசன்னம். அழிவுகளையும், குழப்பங்களையும் பட்டியலிட்ட இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இறுதி இரு இறைச்சொற்றொடர்களில் மட்டும் மனதுக்குத் துணிவூட்டும் நல்ல செய்தியைச் சொல்கிறார், இயேசு. விசாரணைகளின்போது, “என்ன பதில் அளிப்பது என முன்னதாகவே நீங்கள் கவலைப்பட வேண்டாம். இதை உங்கள் மனத்தில் வைத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். ஏனெனில் நானே உங்களுக்கு நாவன்மையையும் ஞானத்தையும் கொடுப்பேன்; உங்கள் எதிரில் எவராலும் உங்களை எதிர்த்து நிற்கவும் எதிர்த்துப் பேசவும் முடியாது.” (லூக்கா 21: 14-15) என்று கூறுகிறார் இயேசு. நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியிலும், இயேசு, அறுதல் தரும் வார்த்தைகளுடன் நிறைவு செய்கிறார். “நீங்கள் மன உறுதியோடு இருந்து உங்கள் வாழ்வைக் காத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள்.” இயேசு கூறும் ‘உங்கள் வாழ்வு’ இவ்வுலக வாழ்வு அல்ல. மறு உலக வாழ்வு.

நாம் எல்லாருமே ஒருநாள் இவ்வுலகிலிருந்து விடைபெற வேண்டும். ஆனால், அது எப்போது என்பது மட்டும் யாருக்கும் தெரியாது. ஒரு சிலருக்கு, மறுவுலக வாழ்வு நெருங்கிவருகிறது என்ற உண்மை, அவர்களுக்கு வரும் நோயால் உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது. அவ்வேளையில், அவர்களில் ஒரு சிலர் மிகுந்த தெளிவுடன் இவ்வுலக வாழவைக் குறித்து உன்னதமான உண்மைகளைக் கூறியுள்ளனர். மறுவுலக வாழ்வுக்கு நாள் குறிக்கப்பட்ட Randy Pausch என்ற பேராசிரியர், இறப்பதற்கு ஒரு சில வாரங்களுக்கு முன், தன் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் புதிதாகப் பட்டம் பெற்ற இளையோருக்கு வழங்கிய ஓர் உரையைக் கேட்கும் வாய்ப்பு பெற்றேன். அதில் அவர் கூறுவது இதுதான்:

“உங்கள் வாழ்வில் ஆழ்ந்த தாகத்தோடு கனவுகளைத் துரத்துங்கள். கனவுகளைத் துரத்துவதற்கு முன், அவை எப்படிப்பட்ட கனவுகள் என்பதைத் தீர்மானம் செய்யுங்கள். பொருளும், புகழும் சேர்க்கும் கனவுகளைத் துரத்தவேண்டாம். நீங்கள் எவ்வளவுதான் பொருள் சேர்த்தாலும், உங்களை விட வேறொருவர் இன்னும் அதிகப் பொருள் சேர்த்திருப்பார்; அது உங்களை மீண்டும் ஏக்கத்தில் விட்டுவிடும். உறவுகளைச் சேகரிக்கும் கனவுகளைத் துரத்துங்கள். உண்மையான உறவுகள், ஏக்கம் தராது. நிறைவைத் தரும்."
