December 24^th night we begin Christmas celebrations. Indeed, Christmas celebrations began almost a month back. Almost everyone in the world knows that it’s Christmas time. But, do THEY know it’s Christmas? Who? The starving millions in Africa. ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ was the title of a song written by two famous musicians from Ireland and Scotland. The images of starving children and adults from the continent of Africa, especially from Ethiopia, began appearing on TV and newspapers in 1983 and they pierced the conscience of the human race. Bob Geldof, an Irish singer and songwriter, saw the report, and called Midge Ure, a Scottish guitarist, and singer. Together they quickly co-wrote the song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in the hope of raising money for famine relief. (You can find the lyrics of this famous song at the end of today’s reflection!)

Geldof then contacted colleagues in the music industry and persuaded them to record the single under the title 'Band Aid' for free. Performed by a collection of British and Irish musicians, the song was released on 7 December 1984 and became the fastest-selling single ever in Britain and raised £8 million. Encouraged by this outpouring of goodwill from the people, Geldof then set his sights on staging a huge concert to raise further funds for famine-stricken Ethiopia.

Famous singers around the world came together on July 13, 1985, to perform ‘Live Aid’ to help the starving millions of Ethiopia. Billed as the "global jukebox", the event was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, England, United Kingdom (attended by 72,000 people) and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (attended by about 100,000 people). On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative happened in other countries, such as Australia and Germany. The concert grew in scope, as more acts were added on both sides of the Atlantic. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time: an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched the live broadcast. As a charity fundraiser, the concert far exceeded its goals: on a television programme in 2001, one of the organisers stated that while initially it had been hoped that Live Aid would raise £1 million with the help of Wembley tickets costing £25.00 each, the final figure was £150 million (approx. $283.6 million). One of the songs performed during this Live Aid concert was Paul McCartney’s “Let It Be”. The whole idea of ‘Live Aid’ as well as the song “Let It Be” are relevant for our Sunday reflection today. Paul McCartney (of Beatles fame) claimed in some interviews that the song ‘Let It Be’ was inspired by a dream he had about his own mother named Mary. But the words ‘Mother Mary’ that Paul has used in this lyric, as well as the phrase ‘Let it be’, often repeated in this song, bring to one’s mind the image of our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, and her famous lines spoken to Angel Gabriel during the scene of the Annunciation… “Let it be to me according to your word.”

As Christmas approaches, schools and parishes would enact the Christmas story. This story usually begins with the scene of the Annunciation, and then goes on to show the Visitation, the Nativity, Shepherds and the Magi…. all in a matter of half an hour. Usually children enact these scenes and hence they are all the more lovely. A few years back, when we were returning home after one such tableau, one of my friends suddenly posed this question: “Was the first Christmas this good?” This question was like a wake-up call!

What was the first historical Christmas like? Surely not such a happy, peaceful event. When history is transformed into pages in a book, we tend to remember the glorious moments of that history and tend to forget the real pain and misery of those events. Similarly, when reading the Gospels during our liturgical celebrations, our minds tend to ‘spiritualise’ these events. It is so easy for us to say at the end of the Gospel reading that it is Good News. For the 4^th Sunday of Advent, after reading the scene of the Annunciation during the Mass, the Priest says in a clear loud voice, “This is the Gospel (Good News) of the Lord” and all of us respond “Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.” But, was it really ‘good news’ when this scene took place the very first time?

The original Christmas story was far from happy and holy. It was loaded with pain and misery. So many things worked against happiness and holiness. We shall consider only one aspect… namely, that Judea was an occupied territory. Army soldiers are not the best models of virtue, to say the least. The duty of army personnel, by definition, is to protect a country. But, unfortunately, there are soldiers who have joined the army for various other reasons. Such soldiers are a threat to common people. Women, especially young girls, who live around army camps, do not live. They die each day in fear. If people have to fear the soldiers of their own country, what can we say about soldiers from foreign lands?

If we can talk to the people of Afghanistan or Iraq we would know what it means to live in country occupied by foreign troops. Almost every day we hear of the atrocities done by the Myanmar army personnel against the Rohingya tribe. This was the plight of Mary, who had to live through horrors enacted by Roman soldiers day after day… everyday. Not a day must have passed without Mary raising questions and prayers to God about their liberation. Her prayers, her questions were answered. God said, “I shall send my Son to save you. You will become the mother of my Son.” Mary wanted to escape the frying pan and God seemed to offer her the fire. God wanted her to become an unwed mother!

Mary knew full well what this meant. Sure death… death by stoning! Mary must have witnessed such brutal murders. Especially, after the Roman occupation, quite a few young girls, raped by the Roman soldiers, must have faced such sentences and, hence, the frequency of such gory scenes must have increased, haunting Mary day and night.

In our present day, the U.N. has acknowledges that sexual violence to women is used as a war tactic. In the resolution, passed by the U.N. Security Council, it noted that “women and girls are particularly targeted by the use of sexual violence, including as a tactic of war to humiliate, dominate, instil fear in, disperse and/or forcibly relocate civilian members of a community or ethnic group.”

When Mary, living under the tyranny of the Roman occupation, cried to God for liberation, God offered her an ‘impossible’ invitation. God invited her to become an unwed mother! Most of us imagine the scene of the Annunciation in terms of holy light, soft music and Mary’s immediate ‘Yes’ to God. She would not have said an immediate “Yes, my Lord…” Much less would she have jumped up in joy to sing “The Magnificat”. She may have suffered sleepless nights to gather enough courage to say this ‘yes’ to God. Finally, she did say ‘yes’, relying totally on God and not thinking about all the earthly consequences… Here are the closing lines of today’s Gospel:

And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." (Luke 1: 35-38)

It is the ‘let it be’ of Mary that made the whole scene of the Annunciation ‘good news’. Without that surrender of Mary, trusting only on God, this scene would be far from ‘good news’.

During the Live Aid concert in 1985, people around the world must have had so many questions about the famine in Ethiopia. The song “Let It Be” may have come as some sort of an answer, although not a complete one.

Mary’s ‘let it be’ was not the complete solution for all the problems; but the starting point of the salvation history. It required great courage and trust on the part of Mary to say this ‘let it be’. May Mother Mary teach us this courage and trust to overcome our personal troubles and the troubles of the world around us during this Christmas.

P.S. Due to the whims and fancies of an individual (who happens to be the President of a powerful nation), Jerusalem has become a war zone lately. Let us pray that the Prince of Peace, born in Bethlehem and died in Jerusalem, may bring more peace to the Holy City, common to three great monotheistic religions – Judaism, Islam and Christianity!
