Feast of the Ascension
Farewell is not a
permanent parting. In effect we say ‘see you later’! Jesus bids farewell to his
disciples on the day of the Ascension. Fr Munachi Ezeogu begins his reflections
on this Feast with a lovely thought: The Gospels contain many parables of a
master who sets out on a long journey and gives his servants charge of his
estate until his return. In the feast of the Ascension of the Lord the parable
becomes reality. Jesus departs to his heavenly Father and leaves his disciples
in charge of the affairs of his kingdom till his return in glory. Each of the
Gospels we have, ends with a scene in which Jesus finally takes leave of his
disciples. These farewell scenes focus not on describing the event in detail
but on the last words that Jesus leaves with his disciples. In fact, the very
fact of a bodily ascension of Jesus into heaven is described only by Luke.
In the Synoptic Gospels
(Matthew, Mark and Luke) and in the Acts of the Apostles there are different
versions of where and when the Ascension took place. Was it in Jerusalem
or in Galilee ? Was it forty days later or soon
after the Resurrection? These are unanswered questions. The Evangelists and the
author of Acts of the Apostles were not interested in the historical details of
the event of the Ascension. They were more interested in the message – the Mission
This message, like
many other statements of Jesus, has been interpreted by Christians in very
different (I am afraid, contrary) ways. The opening statement of Jesus given in
today’s Gospel goes like this: Go into all the world and proclaim the
good news to the whole creation. (Mark 16:15)
How are we to
‘proclaim the good news’? Many interpretations have been given to this
statement and, accordingly, many methods of this ‘proclamation’ have been
adopted. Here is an anecdote shared by Rebecca Pippert, the author of a book
titled - ‘Out of the Salt Shaker: Into the World’:
She tells of a time
she was sitting in her car at a traffic light with her window rolled down. As
the light turned green a car drove by and its occupant threw something into her
car hitting her on the cheek. It didn't hurt but she was so startled that she pulled
over immediately. When she unrolled the paper, she discovered it was a gospel
tract. She says she was the apparent victim of what she refers to as "torpedo
evangelism." I'm sure the ‘torpedoer’ meant well. At least I hope so, but
he or she did the wrong thing for the right reason in the wrong way. We can
engage people in conversation about their faith and their relationship with God
in a non-judgmental manner. We can encourage. We can invite. We can offer
counsel. But we leave the hard work, the heart work, up to Jesus and the Holy
Spirit. You see, we are not on some sort of spiritual mugging mission. (frtonyshomilies.com)
To correct this
aggressive mode of how to ‘proclaim the good news’, we need to embrace some
basic biblical principles that make it possible for us to lead others to the
same personal faith in Christ that we enjoy. They are suggested by Bill Hybels
and Mark Mittelberg in their book, Becoming a Contagious Christian...
I have not read this
book, but when I browsed the internet for this book, what caught my attention
was the cover-page illustration of this book… It was the picture of a row of
match sticks with one of them just having caught fire. One can easily imagine
what would happen to the other match sticks. Given the fact that any symbol is
limited, this illustration gives me some idea as to what would be the effect of
a ‘Contagious Christian’ in a group.
Contagious Christians
like St Francis of Assisi and St Mother Teresa have ‘proclaimed the good news’
without being aggressive with their eloquence. Their life and actions spoke
louder than words. They were ‘walking sermons’ all their lives. Here is an
anecdote about Dr Albert Schweitzer:
Reporters and city
officials gathered at a Chicago railroad station one afternoon in 1953. The person
they were meeting was the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner. A few minutes after
the train came to a stop, a giant of a man – six feet four inches – with bushy
hair and a large moustache stepped from the train. Cameras flashed. City
officials approached him with hands outstretched. Various people began telling
him how honored they were to meet him.
The man politely
thanked them and then, looking over their heads, asked if he could be excused
for a moment. He quickly walked through the crowd until he reached the side of
an elderly black woman who was struggling with two large suitcases. He picked
up the bags and with a smile, escorted the woman to a bus. After helping her
aboard, he wished her a safe journey. As he returned to the greeting party he
apologized, “Sorry to have kept you waiting.”
The man was Dr.
Albert Schweitzer, the famous missionary doctor who had spent his life helping
the poor in Africa. In response to Schweitzer’s action, one member of the
reception committee said with great admiration to the reporter standing next to
him, “That’s the first time I ever saw a sermon walking.” (franciskong.com)
It is more interesting
to note that Albert was a famous preacher in his younger days. So, he must have
known the difference between ‘proclaiming the good news’ through words and
through life. We know that Jesus did not choose his disciples to be eloquent
preachers but his true witnesses.
There is an ancient
legend about Jesus’ ascension into heaven. He is met by the angel Gabriel who
asks him, "Now that your work is finished, what plans have you made to
ensure that the truth that you brought to earth will spread throughout the
world?"
Jesus answered,
"I have called some fishermen and tax-collectors to walk along with me as
I did my Father’s will."
"Yes, I know
about them," said Gabriel, "but what other plans have you made?"
Jesus replied,
"I taught Peter, James and John about the kingdom of God; I taught Thomas
about faith; and all of them were with me as I healed and preached to the multitudes."
Gabriel replied.
"But you know how unreliable that lot was. Surely you must have other
plans to make sure your work was not in vain."
Jesus quietly
replied to Gabriel "I have no other plans. I am depending on them!" (sermoncentral.com)
Coming back to the
farewell message of Jesus given in today’s gospel, we see that Jesus spells out
his idea of this proclamation. The mission of proclaiming the good news is
accompanied by a list of signs given by Jesus: And these signs will accompany
those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak
in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any
deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and
they will recover. (Mark 16:17-18)
Healing the world,
driving away evil from the world and speaking a new language… a language of
love are sure signs that the good news is proclaimed. As a result of such a
proclamation, even deadly things will turn out to be harmless!
In today’s COVID
situation when we hear these words of Jesus, we naturally think of those who
are proclaiming the ‘good news’ of hope to thousands of desperate people,
especially in India, by their deeds – the medical personnel as well as the
volunteers who help poor people with supply of food and medicines. We pray that
the Good Lord grant all of them strength and courage to drive away the demons
that plague not only the bodies, but more so the minds of people during this
pandemic.
A final note… on the
24 hours adoration taken up in India and elsewhere around the world to protect
people from this pandemic. The theme chosen for this adoration is: “Fear
not, just believe” (Mark 5:36) – the words of Jesus to Ja'irus, the
ruler of the synagogue, who was begging Jesus to come home to heal his dying

Gracias, the Archbishop of Mumbai at 6 a.m. on May 15, Saturday and ends with
the Mass celebrated by George Antonysamy, the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore on

பேச்சாளருமான ரெபெக்கா பிப்பெர்ட் (Rebecca Pippert) என்ற பெண்மணி, ஒருநாள், தன் காரில், அலுவலகம்
சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தார். போகும்வழியில், நான்கு வழி சந்திப்பு ஒன்றில், சிவப்பு விளக்கு
மாறுவதற்காகக் காத்திருந்தார். தென்றல், மென்மையாக வீசிக்கொண்டிருந்ததால், ரெபெக்கா, தன் கார் கண்ணாடியை இறக்கிவிட்டிருந்தார். அப்போது, அருகில் ஒரு கார் வந்துநின்றது.

நற்செய்தி எண்ணங்கள் அடங்கிய ஒரு சிறு நூல் அது.
மடியில்
விழுந்தது, நற்செய்தி எண்ணங்கள் என்பது, ரெபெக்காவிற்கு மிகிழ்வைத் தந்தது. அந்நூலை
எறிந்தவர்கள் நல்ல எண்ணத்துடன்தான் செயல்பட்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதையும் ரெபெக்கா உணர்ந்தார்.
இருந்தாலும், அந்த நற்செய்தி, தன் முகத்தில்
அறையும்படி தன்னை வந்து சேரவேண்டுமா என்ற கேள்வியும் அவர் மனதில் எழுந்தது. நற்செய்தியால்
மற்றவர்களைத் ‘தாக்கும்’ இத்தகையப் பாணியை, “Torpedo Evangelism” அதாவது, "தாக்குதல் வழி, நற்செய்தியைப் பரப்புதல்"
என்று, ரெபெக்கா பிப்பெர்ட், தான் எழுதியுள்ள நூலில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். "நீங்கள்
மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்" (மத். 5:13) என்று இயேசு கூறிய சொற்களை அடிப்படையாகக்
கொண்டு, ரெபெக்கா அவர்கள் உருவாக்கிய
அந்நூலின் பெயர், "உப்புக் குப்பியிலிருந்து
உலகிற்கு" (Out of the Salt
Shaker: Into the World). அந்நூலில், நற்செய்தியை
உலகிற்கு எடுத்துச்செல்லும் வழிகளைப்பற்றி ரெபெக்கா எழுதியுள்ளார்.
ஆண்டவர்
இயேசுவின் விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழாவை இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். விண்ணேற்றத்திற்கு முன்னதாக
தன் சீடர்களை இறுதிமுறையாகச் சந்தித்த இயேசு, அவர்களிடம் விட்டுச்சென்ற செய்தி, இன்றைய
நற்செய்தியாக நம்மை அடைந்துள்ளது:
மாற்கு
நற்செய்தி 16: 15-18
அக்காலத்தில்,
இயேசு பதினொருவருக்குத் தோன்றி, அவர்களை நோக்கி, “உலகெங்கும் சென்று படைப்பிற்கெல்லாம்
நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுங்கள். நம்பிக்கைகொண்டு திருமுழுக்குப் பெறுவோர் மீட்புப் பெறுவர்; நம்பிக்கையற்றவரோ தண்டனைத்
தீர்ப்புப் பெறுவர். நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோர் பின்வரும் அரும் அடையாளங்களைச் செய்வர்; அவர்கள் என் பெயரால் பேய்களை
ஓட்டுவர்; புதிய மொழிகளைப் பேசுவர்; பாம்புகளைத் தம் கையால்
பிடிப்பர். கொல்லும் நஞ்சைக் குடித்தாலும் அது அவர்களுக்குத் தீங்கு இழைக்காது. அவர்கள்
உடல் நலமற்றோர்மீது கைகளை வைக்க, அவர்கள் குணமடைவர்” என்று கூறினார்.
“நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுங்கள்” என்று இயேசு கூறிய சொற்கள்,
மறைப்பணி ஆர்வலர்களால் பலவழிகளில் பொருள் கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளதால், நன்மைகள் விளைந்துள்ளன; பிரச்சனைகளும் எழுந்துள்ளன.
எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்றின் முதல் அலையும், தற்போது, இரண்டாவது அலையும் நம்மை பெரிதும் காயப்படுத்தியுள்ள
வேளையில், "இது, கடவுள் அனுப்பிய தண்டனை. எனவே, மனம் திரும்பி நற்செய்தியை நம்புங்கள்"

நற்செய்தியை
யார் பறைசாற்றுவது? அதை எப்படி பறைசாற்றுவது? என்ற கேள்விகள் கிறிஸ்தவ வரலாற்றில் அடிக்கடி
எழுந்துள்ளன. பொதுவாக, நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுதல் என்று சொன்னதும், கோவில்களில் முழங்கும் சக்திவாய்ந்த மறையுரைகளை
எண்ணிப்பார்க்கிறோம். இந்தக் கோணத்தில் சிந்திக்கும்போது, அருள்பணியாளர்கள், துறவியர், என்ற ஒரு குறுகிய குழுவுக்கு, இந்தப் பணியை
ஒதுக்கி வைத்துவிடுகிறோம்.
இன்றைய
நற்செய்தியில், இயேசு, தம் சீடர்களுக்குக் கொடுத்த கட்டளையை ஆழமாக சிந்திக்கும்போது, இக்கட்டளையில்
பொதிந்துள்ள இன்னும் சில அழகான எண்ணஙகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளலாம். 'நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுங்கள்' என்று இயேசு கூறிய அதே மூச்சில், அந்தப் பறைசாற்றுதலினால் விளையும் பல்வேறு
நன்மைகளையும் கூறுகின்றார். நற்செய்தியில் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டவர்கள், பேய்களை ஓட்டுவர், உடல்நலமற்றோரைக் குணமாக்குவர், பாம்போ, கொடிய நஞ்சோ அவர்கள் உயிரைப் பறிக்காது என்ற
அடையாளங்களை, இயேசு, இணைத்துக் கூறுகிறார்.
கோவில்களில்
முழங்கப்படுவதோடு நற்செய்தியின் பறைசாற்றுதல் நின்று விடுவதில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு நாள்
வாழ்விலும் வெளிப்படும் குணமளிக்கும் பணிகளில், தீயசக்திகளை உலகினின்று விரட்டியடிக்கும்
பணிகளில், இந்தப் பறைசாற்றுதல் நிகழவேண்டும் என்பதை, இயேசு தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார்.
இந்தக்கோணத்திலிருந்து
பார்த்தால், கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்றிலிருந்து
மக்களைக் காக்க போராடிவரும், மருத்துவப் பணியாளர்களும், இந்தப் பெருந்தொற்றின் விளைவாக, வாழ்வின்
ஆதாரங்களை இழந்து தவிப்போருக்கு உதவிகள் செய்வோரும், பெருந்தொற்று என்ற பேயை ஓட்டி, நோயை நீக்கி, இன்றையச் சூழலுக்கு அவசியமான நற்செய்தியைப்
பறைசாற்றிவருகின்றனர், அல்லது, நற்செய்தியாகவே வாழ்ந்துவருகின்றனர் என்று உறுதியாகச்
சொல்லலாம்.
வார்த்தை
வடிவில் ஆலயங்களில் பறைசாற்றப்படும் நற்செய்தியைக் காட்டிலும், வாழ்க்கையால் உணர்த்தப்படும் நற்செய்தி,
இன்னும் நீடித்த, ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை உருவாக்கும் என்பதை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம். வாழ்க்கையால்
நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றிய பலரில், மருத்துவர் Albert Schweitzer அவர்களும் ஒருவர்.
இவர் வாழ்வில் நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வு, நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுதல் என்பதை, இன்னும்
ஆழமாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவியாக இருக்கும்.
மருத்துவர்
ஆல்பர்ட் அவர்கள், ஆப்ரிக்காவில் மேற்கொண்ட மருத்துவப் பணிகளுக்காகவும், அணு ஆய்வுகளும், ஆயுதங்களும் இவ்வுலகிற்குத்
தேவையில்லை என்ற எண்ணத்தை வளர்க்க, அவர் மேற்கொண்ட முயற்சிகளுக்காகவும், 1952ம் ஆண்டு,
உலக அமைதிக்கான நொபெல் விருது அவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. இவ்விருதைப் பெற்ற அடுத்த ஆண்டு,
அவர், அமெரிக்காவின் சிக்காகோ நகருக்குச் சென்றார். அவரை வரவேற்க, பத்திரிக்கையாளர்கள், பெரும் தலைவர்கள் என்று, பலர், அவர் வரவிருந்த
இரயில் நடைமேடையில் காத்திருந்தனர். ஆல்பர்ட் அவர்கள், இரயிலை விட்டு இறங்கியதும், கரவொலியும், காமிரா ஒளிவிளக்களும் அந்த இடத்தை
நிறைத்தன. அவரோ, அவற்றை அதிகம் பொருட்படுத்தாமல், தன்னை சிறிதுநேரம் மன்னிக்கவேண்டும் என்று
வேண்டியபடி, அந்தக் கூட்டத்தை விலக்கிக்கொண்டு
சென்றார். அந்த நடைமேடையில் இரு பெட்டிகளைச் சுமந்தபடி, தடுமாறி நடந்துக்கொண்டிருந்த
வயதான கறுப்பின பெண்மணி ஒருவருக்கு உதவிசெய்து, அவரை ஒரு பேருந்தில் ஏற்றிவிட்டார். பின்னர்,
தனக்காகக் காத்திருந்த கூட்டத்தினரைச் சந்திக்க வந்தார் ஆல்பர்ட். இதைக்கண்ட ஒரு பத்திரிகையாளர்,
மற்றொருவரிடம், "நான், இதுவரை, கோவில்களில்
மறையுரைகளைக் கேட்டிருக்கிறேன். இதுதான் முதல்முறையாக, ஒரு நடமாடும் மறையுரையைப் பார்க்கிறேன்"
என்று கூறினார். இந்நிகழ்வு நடந்தவேளையில், மருத்துவர் ஆல்பர்ட் அவர்களது வயது,

ஆல்பர்ட்
அவர்கள், 25 வயது இளைஞனாக இருந்தபோது, மறையுரை வழங்குவதில், இறையியல் வகுப்புக்கள் நடத்துவதில் தன்னிகரற்ற
புகழ்பெற்றிருந்தார். ஆனால், தனது 30வது வயதில், அவர்
மருத்துவம் படித்து, ஆப்ரிக்காவில் மிகவும்
பின்தங்கிய ஒரு பகுதியில் மருத்துவமனையொன்றை நிறுவி, பணிசெய்யத் துவங்கினார். பல்வேறு
இடர்கள், சிறைவாசம் என்று, அவர்
வாழ்வில் சவால்கள் வந்தாலும், வறுமையில் வாடிய ஆப்ரிக்க
மக்களுக்கு, பல ஆண்டுகள், மருத்துவப்பணிகளைப் செய்துவந்தார்.
இளமையில்,
தன் வார்த்தைகள் வழியே, நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றி, புகழ்பெற்ற ஆல்பர்ட் அவர்கள், தன்
வாழ்வின் பிற்பகுதியில், நற்செய்தியை தன் வாழ்வின் வழியே பறைசாற்றினார். ஆல்பர்ட் போன்ற
நற்செய்திப் பணியாளர்களின் பறைசாற்றுதலே, இவ்வுலகில், நற்செய்தியை, இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகளாய்
அதிகமாய், ஆழமாய், வேரூன்றி
வளரச்செய்துள்ளது என்று சொன்னால், அது, முற்றிலும் உண்மை.
வாழ்வால்
நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றுவதற்கு, பெரும் அறிவாளிகள், பேச்சாளர்கள் தேவையில்லை. இயேசுவின் சீடர்களே,
இதற்கு, சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள். இயேசு விண்ணேற்றம் அடைந்ததும் நிகழ்ந்ததாய்ச் சொல்லப்படும்
ஒரு கற்பனைக் கதை இது.
இயேசு
விண்ணகம் சென்றதும், தலைமைத்தூதர் கபிரியேல்
அவரைச் சந்தித்தார். "உலகில் உங்கள் பணியைத் திறம்பட முடித்துவிட்டீர்கள். உங்கள்
நற்செய்தியை, உலகில் தொடர்ந்து பரப்புவதற்கு என்ன திட்டங்கள் வகுத்துள்ளீர்கள்?" என்று கேட்டார்.
"என்னுடையப்
பணியைத் தொடரும்படி, ஒரு சில மீனவர்களிடமும், வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களிடமும் சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன்"
என்று இயேசு சொன்னதும், கபிரியேல் தூதர் அவரிடம், "யார்... அந்தப் பேதுரு, தோமா இவர்களைப்பற்றிச் சொல்கிறீர்களா? அவர்களைப் பற்றித்தான் உங்களுக்கு நன்கு
தெரியுமே... ஒருவர் உங்களைத் தெரியாது என்று மறுதலித்தார், மற்றொருவர் உங்களை நம்பவில்லை. இவர்களை நம்பியா
இந்தப் பணியை ஒப்படைத்தீர்கள்? கட்டாயம் வேறு சில நல்ல
திட்டங்கள் உங்கள் எண்ணத்தில் இருக்கும், அப்படித்தானே?" என்று கேட்டார்.
இயேசு
வானதூதரிடம் அமைதியாக, "நற்செய்திப் பணியை இவர்களை
நம்பியே நான் ஒப்படைத்துள்ளேன். இவர்களைத்தவிர, என்னிடம் வேறு எந்தத் திட்டமும் கிடையாது"
என்று பதிலளித்தார்.
இருபது
நூற்றாண்டுகளைத் தாண்டி நற்செய்தி இன்றும் இவ்வுலகில் நடமாடி வருகிறது என்றால், இன்றும் அச்செய்தி, பொருள் நிறைந்ததாக உள்ளது
என்றால், அதற்குக் காரணம், நற்செய்தியை, தங்கள் அறிவுத்திறன் கொண்டு, வார்த்தைப் புலமை கொண்டு போதித்தவர்களோ, அவர்கள் பயன்படுத்திய வழிகளோ அல்ல... நற்செய்தியும், அதன் மையமான இயேசுவும்தான் காரணம்.
இயேசு,
மற்றும், அவர் தந்த நற்செய்தி என்ற மையங்களிலிருந்து விலகி, நற்செய்தியைப் போதிப்பவரின் புகழ், அவர் மேற்கொள்ளும் வழிகள் என்று, எப்போதெல்லாம்
நமது சிந்தனைகள் தடம்புரண்டனவோ, அப்போதெல்லாம், பிரச்சனைகள்
எழுந்துள்ளன என்பதை, கிறிஸ்தவ வரலாறு, மீண்டும் மீண்டும், நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தந்துள்ளது.
வார்த்தைகளை
அதிகம் கூறாமல், நற்செய்தியை வாழ்ந்துகாட்டிய
அசிசி நகர் புனித பிரான்சிஸ், மருத்துவர் Albert Schweitzer, புனித அன்னை தெரேசா என்று,
பல்லாயிரம் நற்செய்திப் பணியாளர்களின் வாழ்வால், நற்செய்தி இன்றும் நம்மிடையே வாழ்கிறது
என்பதை எண்ணி, இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம்.
