2^nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - Pongal

Starting from January 14, this Sunday, Pongal (the harvest festival) is celebrated in Tamilnadu and in many other countries where Tamil speaking communities live. In recent years, some of the States of the U.S. have designated January 14, Pongal Day, as a special holiday for the state. This recognition must have created a feeling of elation for the thousands of Tamils living around the world.

A similar feeling was experienced a few years back (2017) during Pongal. On Pongal day, the eyes of thousands of people all over the world were turned towards Marina Beach, Chennai. Young men and women, as well as family persons, children and senior citizens in tens of thousands gathered in Marina Beach demanding the re-instatement of ‘Jallikattu’ - the bull-fight, banned a few years back.

Hats off to the young women and men of Tamil Nadu, who had taken up protests in various locations of Tamil Nadu spontaneously. They had not sought the support of political paries or media personalities. They had taken care not to be divided on the basis of caste, religion, political allegiance, fan club etc. They had not resorted to any violent ways but had conducted themselves in an orderly way to demand their right to conduct ‘Jallikattu’. To me, this was truly a people’s movement – especially a youth movement, where no individual stole the limelight. The Central and State governments as well as various MNCs were forced to take note of this event, and also take stock of their dubious, underhand dealings with people.

This ‘dharmic’ protest by the youth gave hope as to what our young generation can do if they unite for a purpose. We can surely remember in recent years, how young men and women all over the world are fighting to save our environment. Unfortunately, after the ‘Jallikattu’ protest, the youth of Tamil Nadu have not shown interest in coming together to protest against other oppressive measures like the NEET exam. In general, the youth in India have not supported the lengthy protests taken up by the farmers in Delhi (2020-2021), or raised their voice against the atrocities carried out in Manipur (2023).

It is painful to see how thousands of young women and men, even after seeing what youth power can do, still waste their time in fan clubs, cricket matches and public rallies organized by political leaders. We pray that the youth may wake up from their slumber and truly become a constructive force in this election year (2024) to bring awareness to the people of India to choose proper leaders and thus bring about social change in Tamil Nadu and all over India.

One of the Tamil poets by name ‘Kaniyan Poongunranar’ has enunciated the broad-minded Tamil culture that welcomes every one as a relative through the poem “Yaathum Oore, Yaavarum Kelir”, which means, “All the towns are our neighbourhood and all the people, our relatives”. We pray that the festival of Pongal, which brings near and dear ones together from far and wide, reminds us strongly that all of us are knit together into a noble human family! We pray that our young men and women do not become a prey to the divisive tactics employed by our selfish political leaders on the basis of caste, creed, language, and political parties in order to gain votes!

Let us now turn our attention to this Sunday’s readings…

The first reading (I Samuel 3:3-10, 19). and the Gospel (John 1: 35-42) talk about how God gets introduced to us in various ways. In the first reading we hear how God gets introduced to Samuel when he was a child. In the Gospel, Andrew and Simon Peter get introduced to Jesus as adults. There are a few lessons – old and new – that we can learn from these two readings.

God meets Samuel in the temple. Samuel has been serving in the temple for quite some time. The opening line of this passage says that Samuel was lying down within the temple of the LORD. (I Sam. 3:3) This indicates that he was all the time in the temple. Still, he had not met God.

I am reminded of the small fish swimming in the ocean. It was swimming here and there as if searching for something. A big fish asked the small fish: “What are you searching for?” The small fish answered: “The ocean”. It is possible to be immersed in the ocean and still not be aware of it.

It is possible for us to be in God’s presence and still not be aware of God as in the case of Samuel. Samuel was a child and, hence, his ignorance need not be made much of. What about us when we take God for granted when our life is smooth-sailing and begin searching for God mainly when things became tough for us?

In the Gospel, we come across two adults getting introduced to Jesus. In the case of Samuel, God gets introduced in the temple; whereas in the Gospel, Jesus gets introduced on the roadside. Both in the Bible, as well as in human history, God gets introduced more often in very ordinary circumstances and places than in the holy of holies. Since God gets introduced in very ordinary situations, many of us tend to miss the importance of it. Even in the case of the two disciples of John, they could have missed Jesus. But, they took extra efforts. They followed Him.

The two disciples… followed Jesus. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. (John 1: 37-39)

It is interesting to note that the very first words spoken by Jesus, in the Gospel of John, are in the form of a pertinent question: "What do you seek?" At the beginning of a New Year, we seek so many things to make our life better. If Jesus were to ask each of us "What do you seek?", what would be our answer. What are we seeking in 2024? 

Two questions ‘What do you seek?’ and ‘Where are you staying?’ as well as an invitation ‘Come and see’ are the main focus of this passage and it gives us two fundamental characteristics of a true disciple, namely, seeking God and staying with God.

I have read this passage from John’s Gospel quite many times and have interpreted it in very many ways. This time, one aspect of this passage struck me for the first time… the idea of Andrew taking efforts to introduce the Lord to his brother Simon. As siblings, we tend to introduce our brothers and sisters to many things and persons in life. But how many of us introduce God to our own brothers and sisters? In how many families God is a topic of our conversations? The family that prays together, not only stays together, but also becomes familiar with God!

Another aspect of this passage is the humility of Andrew. He brings Peter to Jesus and Jesus seems to pay more attention to Peter, calling him ‘the rock’ etc. The meeting between Jesus and Peter began a historical relationship that has survived 20 centuries. This does not seem to have disturbed Andrew one bit. He came from the school of John the Baptist, who often spoke of how ‘Jesus must increase and he must decrease’. In reality, John did just that. After introducing Jesus to his disciples, he disappeared from the scene. Andrew too, after introducing Jesus to Peter, remained incognito! We can surely pray for this wonderful grace of getting our own near and dear ones introduced to God and disappearing, once God takes over.

We pray that the Pongal festival brings more cheer and hope to the farmers in Tamilnadu, especially after the heavy rains and floods. We pray that the youth power in India reaps a bumper harvest of noble deeds, especially during this election year - 2024. We pray that our families become schools where God gets introduced to our near and dear ones.

தமிழகத்திலும், உலகில், தமிழர்கள் வாழும் பல நாடுகளிலும், சனவரி 14, இஞ்ஞாயிறு முதல், பொங்கல் திருநாள் சிறப்பாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. எல்லா நாடுகளிலும், ஆண்டின் பல்வேறு நாட்களில், அறுவடைத் திருநாள் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. இயற்கை வளம், மனித உழைப்பு, இறைவனின் கருணை அனைத்தும் இணைந்து, நமக்குக் கிடைத்த கொடைகளுக்கு நன்றி சொல்லும் அழகானத் திருநாள் இது.

ஏழு ஆண்டுகளுக்குமுன், 2017ம் ஆண்டு, பொங்கல் திருநாளையொட்டி, உலகில், பெரும்பாலானோரின் பார்வை, மெரினா கடற்கரையை நோக்கித் திரும்பியிருந்தது. இலட்சக்கணக்கான இளையோர், மெரினா கடற்கரையிலும், தமிழகத்தின் பல்வேறு நகரங்களிலும் மேற்கொண்ட போராட்டங்கள், நம் நினைவில் பசுமையாகப் பதிந்துள்ளன. தமிழகமெங்கும், கண்ணியமான முறையில், நடைபெற்ற அந்தப் போராட்டத்தின் விளைவாக, தடைசெய்யப்பட்டிருந்த ‘ஜல்லிக்கட்டு’ விளையாட்டு, மீண்டும், தமிழ்நாட்டில் துவக்கப்பட்டது.

சுயவிளம்பரம் தேடும் நடிகர்களையும், தலைவர்களையும் சார்ந்திராமல், அரசியல் நாற்றம் அறவே இல்லாமல் நடத்தப்பட்ட அந்த அறப்போராட்டம், நம்மை வியக்கவைத்தது; இளையோர் மீது நம்பிக்கையை விதைத்தது. ஒரு நோக்கத்தை மையப்படுத்தி இளைஞர்கள் ஒன்றிணைந்தால், அவர்களால் எதையும் செய்யமுடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையை உருவாக்கியது. ஆனால், அந்த போராட்டத்திற்குப்பின், இந்திய மக்கள் சந்தித்த வேறு பல பிரச்சனைகளில் இளையோர் ஈடுபடாமல் போனது, பெரும் ஏமாற்றத்தைத் தருகிறது. NEET தேர்வினால் பல இளம் உயிர்கள் பலியானபோதும், டெல்லியில், தமிழக விவசாயிகளும், பின்னர், ஏனைய விவசாயிகளும் நீண்ட போராட்டங்கள் நடத்தியபோதும், இன்னும், மணிப்பூர் கலவரங்களின்போதும், இந்தியாவை வதைத்த பிரச்சனைகளை இளையோர் கண்டும் காணாமல் இருந்தது, வேதனை தருகிறது.

இளையோர் இணைந்தால் என்ன செய்யமுடியும் என்பதை, 'ஜல்லிக்கட்டு' போராட்டத்தின் வழியே உணர்ந்த பின்னரும், ஆயிரக்கணக்கான இளையோர், இன்னும் ரசிகர் மன்றங்களிலும், கிரிக்கெட் போட்டிகளிலும், அரசியல் தலைவர்கள் நடத்தும் பொதுக்கூட்டங்களிலும் நேரத்தை வீணடிப்பது, வேதனை அளிக்கிறது. இந்த தேர்தல் ஆண்டில், இளைஞர்கள், கிரிக்கெட், சினிமா ஆகியவை உருவாக்கியுள்ள கனவுலகிலிருந்து விழித்தெழவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம். நல்ல தலைவர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்க, இந்திய மக்களுக்கு விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தவும், அதன் வழியே, தமிழகத்திலும், இந்தியா முழுவதும், சமுதாய மாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தவும், இளையோர், ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான சக்தியாக மாறவேண்டும் என்று இறைவனை வேண்டுவோம்.

இனி, இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வாசகங்களின் மீது ஒரு பார்வை....

நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும், வாழ்வின் பல நிலைகளில், பலச் சூழல்களில், இறைவன் அறிமுகம் ஆகிறார் என்பதை, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமும் (1 சாமுவேல் 3:3ஆ-10,19), நற்செய்தியும் (யோவான் 1:35-42) நமக்குத் தெளிவுபடுத்துகின்றன. சிறுவன் சாமுவேலுக்கு இறைவன் அறிமுகமான நிகழ்வை, முதல் வாசகமும், வளர்ந்துவிட்ட நிலையில், அந்திரேயா, மற்றும் பேதுரு இருவருக்கும், இயேசு அறிமுகமாகும் நிகழ்வை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியும் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டுகின்றன. இந்த இரு நிகழ்வுகளுமே, சில பாடங்களை நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றன.

சிறுவன் சாமுவேலுக்கு, ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில், இறைவன் அறிமுகமாகிறார். ஆண்டவரின் இல்லமே சாமுவேலின் வாழ்வாக மாறிவிட்ட நிலையிலும், அந்தப் புனிதமான இடத்தில், அச்சிறுவனால், இறைவனை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியவில்லை.

நம் வாழ்வை ஆய்வு செய்யும்போது, நமக்கு அதிக பழக்கமான இடங்களிலும், சூழல்களிலும் இறைவன் தன்னை அறிமுகப்படுத்திய நேரங்களில், அவரை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாமல் தடுமாறியிருக்கிறோம். குறிப்பாக, நம் துன்ப நேரங்களில், இறைவன் காணாமற் போய்விட்டதாக எண்ணியிருக்கிறோம்.

கடற்கரையில் இறைவனும், பக்தனும் இணைந்து நடந்து சென்ற கதை நமக்கு நினைவிருக்கும். கடந்து வந்த பாதையைத் திருப்பிப் பார்த்த பக்தன், தானும், இறைவனும் வாழ்வில் இணைந்து நடந்ததன் அடையாளமாக இரு சோடி காலடித்தடங்கள் கடற்கரை மணலில் பதிந்திருந்ததைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தான். ஒரு சில வேளைகளில், அந்தப் பாதையில், ஒரு சோடி காலடித்தடங்களே இருந்ததைப் பார்த்து திடுக்கிட்டான், பக்தன். நினைவுபடுத்தி பார்த்தபோது, அந்த நேரங்களெல்லாம் அவன் அதிக துன்பத்தோடு போராடிய நேரங்கள் என்பதைக் கண்டுபிடித்தான். உடனே பக்தன் கடவுளிடம், "துன்ப நேரத்தில் என்னைத் தனியே தவிக்க விட்டுவிட்டு போய்விட்டீர்களே. இது உங்களுக்கே நியாயமா?" என்று முறையிட்டான். இறைவன், பதில் மொழியாக, "மகனே, பெரும் அலைகளாய் துன்பங்கள் வந்தபோது, ஒரு சோடி காலடித் தடங்களே இருப்பதைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு, அவசர முடிவேடுத்துவிட்டாய். அந்த நேரங்களில் உன்னைவிட்டு நான் எங்கும் போகவில்லை. உன்னைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு நடந்தேன்" என்றார்.

சிறுவயதில் நமக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கப்பட்ட இறைவனைச் சரியாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ளாமல், அவருடன் அதிகமான நேரத்தைச் செலவு செய்யாமல் போனதால், இத்தவறுகள் நடந்தன. இத்தவறுகளைத் தீர்க்கும் வழிகளை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொல்லித்தருகிறது.

இன்றைய நற்செய்திப் பகுதியில், திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இயேசுவை, தன் சீடர்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கும் நிகழ்வை வாசிக்கிறோம். சாமுவேலுக்கு இறைவன் கோவிலில் அறிமுகமாகிறார். நற்செய்தியிலோ, வழியோரம், இயேசுவின் அறிமுகம் நடைபெறுகிறது. கோவில்களிலும், புனிதத் தலங்களிலும் இறைவன் அறிமுகம் ஆவதை விட, சாதாரண, எளியச் சூழல்களில் அவர் அறிமுகம் ஆன நிகழ்வுகளே, மனித வரலாற்றிலும், விவிலியத்திலும் அதிகம் உள்ளன என்பதை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நினைவுறுத்துகிறது.

வழியோரம் அறிமுகமான இயேசுவை, வழியோரமாகவே விட்டுவிட்டு, தங்கள் வழியில் செல்லவில்லை, அச்சீடர்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவைப் பின் தொடர்ந்தனர். இந்நிகழ்வை யோவான் நற்செய்தி அழகாக விவரிக்கின்றது:

யோவான் நற்செய்தி 1: 38-39

இயேசு திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, அவர்கள் தம்மைப் பின் தொடர்வதைக் கண்டு, “என்ன தேடுகிறீர்கள்?” என்று அவர்களிடம் கேட்டார். அவர்கள், “ரபி, நீர் எங்கே தங்கியிருக்கிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம், “வந்து பாருங்கள்” என்றார். அவர்களும் சென்று அவர் தங்கியிருந்த இடத்தைப் பார்த்தார்கள். ,,, அன்று அவர்கள் அவரோடு தங்கினார்கள்.

இயேசு பேசிய முதல் சொற்களாக, யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் நாம் காண்பது, "என்ன தேடுகிறீர்கள்?" என்ற பொருள் செறிந்த கேள்வி. இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, "வந்து பாருங்கள்" என்ற அழைப்பையும் இயேசு விடுக்கிறார்.

ஒவ்வொரு புதிய ஆண்டிலும் நாம் தேடல்களை மேற்கொண்டு வருகிறோம். பொதுவாக, இத்தேடல்கள், நமது வாழ்வை, கூடுதலான நலமும், வசதியும் நிறைந்ததாக மாற்றும் தேடல்களாக அமைகின்றன. நம்மிடம், இன்று, இயேசு, "என்ன தேடுகிறீர்கள்?" என்ற கேள்வியை எழுப்பினால், நமது பதில் என்னவாக இருக்கும் என்பதை, ஓர் ஆன்மீக ஆய்வாக மேற்கொள்வது பயனளிக்கும். 2024ம் ஆண்டு, நம் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விற்காகவும், இந்திய நாட்டிற்காகவும் நாம் தேடுவது என்ன?

"என்ன தேடுகிறீர்கள்?" "நீர் எங்கே தங்கியிருக்கிறீர்?" என்ற இரு கேள்விகளும், "வந்து பாருங்கள்" என்ற அழைப்பும், அந்த அழைப்பை ஏற்று, சீடர்கள் இயேசுவுடன் தங்கியதும், இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் மைய நிகழ்வுகளாக அமைந்துள்ளன. இறைவனை, இயேசுவை, உலகிற்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்க விரும்பும் சீடர்களுக்குத் தேவையான இரு அம்சங்கள் இங்கு கூறப்பட்டுள்ளன. இறைவனைத் தேடுவதும், இறைவனுடன் தங்குவதும் சீடர்களுக்கு மிகவும் தேவையான அம்சங்கள். அடுத்ததாக, தாங்கள் பெற்ற அனுபவத்தை, பிறரும் பெறவேண்டுமென்ற ஆவலில், அவர்களை இறைவனிடம் அழைத்துச் செல்வதும், உண்மையான சீடரின் பண்பு. இதையே, அந்திரேயா செய்தார்.

அந்திரேயா முதலில் இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்கிறார். பின்னர், தான் பெற்ற இன்பம் தன் சகோதரனும் பெறவேண்டும் என்ற அக்கறையுடன், பேதுருவை, இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்து வருகிறார். நம் குடும்பங்களில், உடன்பிறந்தோரும், உறவுகளும், வாழ்வில் முன்னேறுவதற்கு உதவியாக, பலரை அவர்களுக்கு நாம் அறிமுகம் செய்து வைக்கிறோம். இந்த அறிமுகங்களில் எல்லாம் மிக முக்கியமான அறிமுகம், இறைவனை, அவர்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைப்பது.

இந்த அறிமுகம் நம் குடும்பங்களில் நடைபெறுகிறதா? நாம் வாழும் இன்றைய உலகில், இறைவனை அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கும் வாய்ப்புக்கள் உள்ளனவா? என்ற கேள்விகளை நாம் ஆழமாக ஆராயவேண்டும். இறைவனை நம் குடும்பங்களில் அறிமுகப்படுத்த, அவருடன் உறவை வளர்க்க, குடும்ப செபங்கள் பெரும் உதவியாக இருக்கும்.

அந்திரேயா தன் உடன் பிறந்த பேதுருவை இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்து வந்தார். பேதுருவும் இயேசுவும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் அறிமுகம் ஆனதால், காலத்தால் அழியாத ஒரு வரலாறு உருவானது. பேதுருவைக் கண்டதும் இயேசுவின் முழு கவனமும் அவர்மீது திரும்பியது. அவரை 'கேபா' 'பாறை' உறுதியானவர் என்றெல்லாம் புகழ்கிறார் இயேசு. தான் அழைத்து வந்த சகோதரன் மீது இயேசு தனி கவனம் காட்டியது, அந்திரேயாவுக்கு வருத்தத்தையோ, பொறாமையையோ உருவாக்கவில்லை. காரணம், அவர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் சீடர். ‘அவர் வளரவேண்டும், தான் மறைய வேண்டும்’ என்று அடிக்கடி சொல்லி வந்த திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இயேசுவை தன் சீடர்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்தார்; மறைந்துபோனார். அவரது சீடராக இருந்த அந்திரேயாவும், அதே மன நிலையில் இருந்தார். தான் மறைந்தாலும் சரி, தன் சகோதரன் பேதுரு வரலாறு படைக்கவேண்டும் என்று எண்ணினார் அந்திரேயா. அவர் எண்ணியபடியே, இயேசுவும், பேதுருவும் படைத்த அந்த வரலாறு, 20 நூற்றாண்டுகளாக வாழ்ந்து வருகிறது.

உடன் பிறந்தோரிடையில் இப்படி உன்னதமான எண்ணங்கள், உறவுகள் வளர்ந்தால் உலகத்தை மாற்றும் வரலாறுகள் தொடரும். உடன்பிறந்தோரும், உறவுகளும் கூடிவரும் இந்தப் பொங்கல் திருநாளில், நாம், ஒருவர் ஒருவருக்கு இறைவனை அறிமுகம் செய்வதற்கும், அனைவரும் இணைந்து, “யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்” என்ற பரந்த மனப்பான்மையுடன், மனித குடும்பத்தை உருவாக்குவதற்கும் இறைவன் நமக்கு நல்வழிகாட்ட மன்றாடுவோம்.

புலர்ந்திருக்கும் புதிய ஆண்டு, இளையோருக்கு ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான ஆண்டாக அமைய வேண்டுவோம். குறிப்பாக, இவ்வாண்டு, தேர்தலை எதிர்நோக்கியிருக்கும் இந்தியாவில், நல்லதொரு எதிர்காலத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்பும் மிக முக்கியப் பணி தங்களுக்கு உள்ளது என்பதை இளையோர் உணர்ந்து, அதற்கு ஏற்ற முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று சிறப்பாக மன்றாடுவோம்.
