This Sunday would be announced quite in advance. Posters about this Sunday would appear; raffle tickets would be sold; Mission Sunday Fair would be conducted. All in all, this was a Sunday to look forward to. Later, during my Jesuit formation and priestly ministry I understood that this Sunday was set aside to bring to focus those who were toiling in the Lord’s vineyard in very difficult circumstances. Here is a brief information about ‘The origins of World Mission Sunday’.
In 1922, Pope Pius XI made the Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF) the official mission-funding society for the whole Catholic Church. On 14 April 1926, Pope Pius XI gave his approval to a request formulated by the APF which, in a plenary assembly, petitioned the Pope to establish ‘a day of prayer and propaganda for the missions to be celebrated on the same day in every Catholic diocese, parish and institute in the world’. The reasons for the request were clearly stated: ‘The day would foster understanding of the greatness of the missionary task, encourage zeal among the clergy and the people; offer an opportunity to make the APF ever more widely known and encourage offerings for the missions...’

In the past, Asia and Africa were considered fertile ground for missionary activities. Special collections were made to support missionaries who worked in mission stations in far away places.
I can see a marked shift in my thoughts on Mission Sunday. I can see that Asia and Africa have graduated very much from being continents which received missionaries, to continents sending missionaries to other parts of the world. The tide has surely turned around. My present thoughts are not overly concerned about which country or continent sends more missionaries. I am more concerned about how all of us are called to become missionaries, messengers to bring good news to our world.
On June 28th, 2010, the eve of the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul, Pope Benedict XVI announced: "I have decided to create a new organism, in the form of pontifical council, with the specific task of promoting a renewed evangelization in countries where the first proclamation of the faith already resounded, and where Churches are present of ancient foundation, but which are going through a progressive secularization of society and a sort of 'eclipse of the sense of God,' which constitutes a challenge to find the appropriate means to propose again the perennial truth of the Gospel of Christ." Accordingly, in October 2010, he established the Council for New Evangelisation. This world needs to be evangelised anew. It would be more profitable to look at Mission Sunday from this perspective.
I would like to confine my thoughts mainly to the idea of ‘Mission’ – the idea of ‘being sent’. This concept widens the scope of this Sunday from the narrow ‘missionary’ image. The term ‘missionary’ brings to mind only priests and religious, whereas the term ‘mission’ includes all of us. Every one of us is ‘missioned’, namely, ‘sent’.
There is a beautiful saying attributed to Rabindranath Tagore, namely: “Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man.” Every one of us coming into the world is a gift from God, a messenger sent by God, bringing a positive message to the world.
When Pope Benedict XVI visited England recently to beatify Cardinal Newman, he quoted from one of the meditations of Newman. “God has created me to do him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another.”
Helen Keller emphasises our ‘mission’ in these words: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
Stringing together the thoughts of Tagore, Newman and Keller, we can see that the very first ‘mission’ given to each one of us is to cherish ourselves and others as lovely gifts come into this world. Each of us is given a specific mission to fulfil in this world. No one else is assigned to do this mission. How great this world would turn out to be if every child realises that he or she is a unique gift given to this world for a unique purpose!
The second reading for this Sunday is taken from the Second Letter to Timothy, where St Paul looks at his life with a sense of satisfaction having accomplished his mission.
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (II Tim. 4: 6-8)
These words of St Paul follow last week’s readings where Paul tells Timothy to preach the good news ‘in season and out of season’. (II Tim. 4:2) Another translation of this verse makes St Paul’s instruction clearer. “Preach the Word God. Be prepared, whether the time is favourable or not.” When the time is favourable, preach the word from the pulpit, from an erected stage via microphones and speakers. In our present day world such loud proclamation may land the messenger in trouble. We can easily recall the amount of tensions created by religious messages delivered via loudspeakers.
When such a chance is not possible, the next best option is the sharing of the Word of God in small groups, beginning with our families. Of all the evangelising, missionary activities undertaken, the sharing of the Word of God in families is the most challenging one. I know of many youngsters who share the Word of God in their work spots, friends circle and prayer groups. When talking of sharing in groups, we can surely think of Basic Christian Communities which have their roots in Latin America and the Philippines. I am happy that in India, Basic Christian Communities have taken strong roots.
Sharing the good news or the Word of God through words is one way of evangelising. In my opinion, a better way of preaching is through not-preaching, but living the Word. For instance, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’(John 13:34) are powerful words indeed, when spoken. But when this is truly practised in life, the effect is more powerful. ‘Forgive your brother not seven times but seventy times seven…’ (Matthew 18:22) is a power-packed formula. But its practice is surely better. It’s a knock-out punch! Action speaks louder than words. Most of the early Christians did exactly this. Here is a passage from the Acts of the Apostles in which one can see how action spoke louder than words:
Acts 4: 32-35
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
My closing thoughts on the word ‘mission’ come from the commercial world. All of us know that each company, each firm has a ‘mission statement’ or a ‘vision statement’. The commercial world is very clear as to what its ‘mission’ is. It pursues this mission with unparalleled passion and zeal. How great it would be if we can match up to this passion and zeal in living out our ‘Mission’.
Mission Sunday today, especially in the context of the world standing in need of New Evangelisation, is a call, a challenge to all of us. We begin this ‘Mission’ from within. We need to believe that each of us is a gift sent by God to fulfil a specific, unique mission in this world. The second level of ‘Mission’ is the one we owe to our families. We need to share good news in our families as often as possible. All of us may not have the opportunity to preach the good news from a pulpit. But, all of us do have the opportunity to live the good news in our lives.

இஞ்ஞாயிறை மறைபரப்பு ஞாயிறென்று கொண்டாட திருச்சபை நம்மை அழைக்கிறது. முன்பு இந்த ஞாயிறு விசுவாசப் பரப்புதல் அல்லது வேதபோதக ஞாயிறென்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. வேதபோதக ஞாயிறு என்றதும் என் மனதில் சிறு வயது எண்ணங்கள் அலை மோதுகின்றன.
சிறு வயதில் வேதபோதக ஞாயிறுக்கு இரண்டு அல்லது மூன்று வாரங்களுக்கு முன்னதாகவே அறிவிப்புக்கள் வெளி வரும். திருத்தந்தையின் உருவம், புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காவின் படம் இவைகளைக் கொண்ட சுவரொட்டிகள் கோவிலைச் சுற்றி ஒட்டப்படும். இந்த ஞாயிறையொட்டி விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகள், பரிசு குலுக்கல்கள் நடத்தப்படும். ஒவ்வொரு பங்கிலும் நிதி திரட்டப்பட்டு, உரோமைக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்படும். வேதபோதக நாடுகளில், மிகக் கடினமானச் சூழ்நிலையில் மறைபரப்புப் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள குருக்கள், துறவியருக்கு இந்த நிதி அனுப்பப்படும். வேதபோதக, விசுவாசப் பரப்புதல் ஞாயிறென்றால் இவைகளே என் சிறுவயது எண்ணங்களாய் இருந்தன.
இன்று இந்த நாளைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கும் போது, வேறுபல, வெகுவாக மாறுபட்ட எண்ணங்கள் உள்ளத்தில் எழுகின்றன. இந்த ஞாயிறைக் குறிக்க நாம் பயன்படுத்தும் Mission Sunday என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொற்றொடரை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு நம் சிந்தனைகளைப் பகிர்வோம்.
Mission Sunday என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொற்றொடரை அப்படியே மொழி பெயர்த்தால், 'அனுப்பப்படும் ஞாயிறு' என்று சொல்லலாம். அனுப்பப்படுதல் என்பது அழகான ஓர் எண்ணம்.
"உலகில் பிறக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையும் இறைவனிடமிருந்து வரும் பரிசு. இந்தப் பரிசுப் பொருள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒரு செய்தியுடன் இவ்வுலகை அடைகிறது. 'இறைவன் இந்த உலகைக் குறித்து இன்னும் களைப்படையவில்லை' என்பதே அச்செய்தி."
இதைச் சொன்னவர் இந்திய மகாக் கவி இரவீந்திரநாத் தாகூர். நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். ஒரு பரிசாக அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். உலக வரலாற்றில், மனித வரலாற்றில் நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தனிப்பட்ட ஓர் இடம் உண்டு. நாம் பிறந்ததற்குத் தனிப்பட்ட ஒரு காரணம் உண்டு. நமக்கேனக் குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள, நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள அந்தக் குறிக்கோளை வேறு ஒருவராலும் நிறைவேற்ற முடியாது.
சென்ற மாதம் திருத்தந்தையால் இங்கிலாந்தில் முத்திபேறு பெற்றவராக உயர்த்தப்பட்ட கர்தினால் நியூமன் எழுதிய ஒரு தியானத்தில் காணப்படும் ஒரு பகுதியைத் திருத்தந்தை தன் மறையுரையில் கூறினார்.
"ஒரு தனிப்பட்டப் பணிக்கென இறைவன் என்னைப் படைத்துள்ளார். வேறு எவருக்கும் அவர் கொடுக்காமல், எனக்கு மட்டுமே அப்பணியைக் கொடுத்துள்ளார்." என்று நியூமன் கூறியுள்ளார்.
கேட்க, பேச, பார்க்க இயலாமல் இருந்தாலும், தன் வாழ்வின் மூலம் சாதனைகளைப் புரிந்து வரலாற்றில் தனி இடம் பெற்றுள்ள Helen Kellerம் தாகூர், நியூமன் ஆகியோரின் எண்ணங்களைத் தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில் கூறியுள்ளார்:
"என்னால் இவ்வுலகில் எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்ய முடியாது. ஆனாலும், என்னால் ஒரு சிலவற்றைச் செய்ய முடியும். எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்ய முடியவில்லை என்பதற்காக, நான் செய்யக் கூடிய சிலவற்றைச் செய்ய மறுக்க மாட்டேன்."
கடல் மணலைக் கயிறாகத் திரிக்கவோ, வானத்தை வில்லாக வளைக்கவோ நமக்கு அழைப்பு இல்லாமல் போகலாம், அதற்குரிய திறமைகள் இல்லாமல் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், நமக்கென்று மனித வரலாற்றில் தனியிடம் உள்ளது. அதற்காக நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம், இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ள பரிசுப் பொருட்கள். பிறரும் பரிசுப் பொருள்கள். அதனால் நாம் அனைவரும் மதிப்பிற்குரியவர்கள். ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தனிப்பட்டதொரு பணி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. நம்மால் இயன்றவரை அப்பணியைச் செய்வது நமது பெருமை... நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் தனித்துவத்தை உணர்வது, அதன் அடிப்படையில் நம்மை மதித்து, பிறரையும் மதிக்கப் பழகுவது நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள முதல் Mission.
வேதபோதக அல்லது மறைபரப்பு ஞாயிறு என்றதும் அது வழக்கமாக குருக்கள், துறவியருக்கென ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட பணி என்று நம்மில் பலர் ஒதுங்கி விடுகிறோம். ஆனால், இந்த நாளை “அனுப்பப்படும் ஞாயிறு” என்று எண்ணிப் பார்த்தால், வேறுபட்ட எண்ணங்கள் மனதில் தோன்றும்.
பிரசங்கம், மறையுரை என்று பீடத்திலிருந்து, அல்லது ஒலிபெருக்கிகள் மூலம் முழங்கினால்தான் இறைவார்த்தையை, நற்செய்தியை, மறையைப் பரப்ப முடியும் என்பது மறைபரப்பின் ஒரு கண்ணோட்டம். Mission என்பதன் முழுமையான கண்ணோட்டம் இது அல்ல. சென்ற ஞாயிறு வாசகங்களில் தரப்பட்ட பவுல் அடியாரின் கூற்று ஒன்று நம் சிந்தனைகளுக்கு உதவும்.
2 திமோ. 4 : 2
"இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவி. வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தாலும், கிடைக்காவிட்டாலும் இதைச் செய்வதில் கருத்தாயிரு."
வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் போது, மேடை போட்டு, ஒலிபெருக்கிகள் வைத்து இறைவார்த்தையை உரக்கச் சொல்லலாம். ஆனால், பல நேரங்களில் இப்படிச் சொல்லப்படும் இறைவார்த்தைகள் எவ்வளவு ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை உண்டாக்குகின்றன என்பது கேள்விக் குறியாகிறது. சிறப்பாக, இந்தியாவில் ஏற்படும் மதப் பிரச்சனைகளில் ஒலிபெருக்கிகளுக்கும் ஒரு பங்கு உண்டு என்பது கசப்பான ஓர் உண்மை. மேடையிட்டுக் கூறாமல், சிறு குழுக்களில் பகிரப்படும் இறைவார்த்தையும் பலரது வாழ்வில் தாக்கங்களை உண்டாக்கியுள்ளன.
சிறு குழுக்கள் என்றதும் முதலில் நம் குடும்பங்களை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கலாம். நமது குடும்பங்களில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இறைவார்த்தை சிறிது நேரமாவது பகிரப்பட்டால் பல நன்மைகள் விளையும். குடும்பங்களில் நாம் மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டிய மறைபரப்புப் பணி மிகவும் சவால் நிறைந்த ஒரு பணி.
நமது பணிச் சூழல்களில், நண்பர்கள் நடுவில், சிறு குழுக்களில் பகிரப்படும் இறை வார்த்தைகள் ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை உருவாக்குவதை நாம் கண்கூடாகக் காணலாம். Basic Christian Communities என்று இலத்தீன் அமெரிக்காவில், பிலிப்பின்ஸில் உருவான அடிப்படை கிறிஸ்தவக் குழுக்கள் வழியே இறைவனைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டவர்கள், இறைவனிடம் மீண்டும் வந்தவர்கள் பல ஆயிரம் பேர். கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாய் இந்தக் குழுக்கள் இந்தியாவிலும் வளர்ந்து வந்துள்ளது மகிழ்ச்சி தரும் ஒரு செய்தி.
மேடையிட்டோ, குழுக்களிலோ இறைவார்த்தையைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வாய்ப்பு இல்லாத போதும் இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கச் சொல்கிறார் பவுல் அடியார். வாய் வார்த்தைகளைக் காட்டிலும் வாழ்வினால் நாம் அறிவிக்கும் இறைவார்த்தைகள் மக்கள் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதியும்.
"உன் அயலவர் மீது அன்பு காட்டு" (யோவான் 13:34) என்பதை வார்த்தைகளில் சொல்வது ஒருவகை தாக்கத்தை உண்டாக்கும். அதே வார்த்தைகளை வாழ்ந்து காட்டும்போது, அதன் தாக்கம் இன்னும் ஆழமாக இருக்கும்.
"ஏழு முறையல்ல... எழுபது முறை ஏழு முறை மன்னித்து விடு" (மத்தேயு 18:22) என்று இயேசு விடுத்த சவாலைச் சப்தமாகச் சொல்லிப் புரிய வைக்கலாம். அல்லது தவறிழைக்கும் ஒருவரை ஏழுமுறை எழுபது முறை... அதாவது எந்நேரமும் மன்னிப்பதன் வழியாகவும் கிறிஸ்துவின் நற்செய்தியைப் பறை சாற்றலாம்.
திருச்சபையின் ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் இறை வார்த்தையை, கிறிஸ்துவின் புதிய வழியை வார்த்தைகளால் பறை சாற்றுவதற்குப் பதில், வாழ்வின் வழியாகப் பறை சாற்றியவர்கள் முதல் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள். இந்த ஆரம்ப கால கிறிஸ்தவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோர் அப்போஸ்தலர்களோ, சீடர்களோ, குருக்களோ இல்லை... சாதாரண, எளிய மக்கள். இவர்களது வாழ்வைப் பார்த்து வியந்தவர்கள் அதிகம். அந்த வழியைப் பின்பற்றியவர்கள் அதிகம். திருத்தூதர் பணியின் முதல் சில பிரிவுகளில் இவர்களது வாழ்வைக் குறித்து பல குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன.

நம்பிக்கை கொண்ட மக்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே உள்ளமும் ஒரே உயிருமாய் இருந்தனர். அவர்களுள் எவரும் தமது உடைமைகளைத் தம்முடையதாகக் கருதவில்லை: எல்லாம் அவர்களுக்குப் பொதுவாய் இருந்தது. திருத்தூதர் அனைவரும் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு உயிர்த்தெழுந்தார் என மிகுந்த வல்லமையோடு சான்று பகர்ந்து வந்தனர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் மக்களின் நல்லெண்ணத்தை மிகுதியாகப் பெற்றிருந்தனர். தேவையில் உழல்வோர் எவரும் அவர்களுள் காணப்படவில்லை. நிலபுலன்களை அல்லது வீடுகளை உடையோர் அவற்றை விற்று அந்தத் தொகையைக் கொண்டு வந்து திருத்தூதருடைய காலடியில் வைப்பர்: அது அவரவர் தேவைக்குத் தக்கவாறு பகிர்ந்து கொடுக்கப்படும்.
திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் 5: 12-14
மக்களிடையே பல அரும் அடையாளங்களும் அருஞ்செயல்களும் திருத்தூதர் வழியாய்ச் செய்யப்பட்டன... மக்கள் இவர்களைப் பற்றிப் பெருமையாகப் பேசினர். ஆண்டவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்ட திரளான ஆண்களும் பெண்களும் இவர்களோடு சேர்க்கப்பட்டார்கள்.
வாழ்வால் போதித்து வந்த முதல் கிறிஸ்தவர்களின் பாரம்பரியத்தைத் தொடர்ந்தவர்கள் பலர். புனித பிரான்சிஸ் அசிசி ஆற்றிய மௌனமான மறையுரையைப் பற்றி கேள்விப் பட்டிருக்கிறோம். தன் சீடர்களுடன் ஊரைச் சுற்றி அவர் மெளனமாக நடந்ததே அவ்வூர் மக்களுக்கு அரியதொரு மறையுரையானது. அதேபோல், Dr.Albert Schweitzer என்ற புகழ்மிக்க மருத்துவர் ஆப்ரிக்காவில் ஏழைகள் நடுவில் அற்புதமான பணிகள் செய்தவர். அவரை 'நடமாடும் ஒரு மறையுரை' (Walking sermon) என்று சொல்வார்கள்.
இறுதியாக, Mission என்ற சொல்லுக்கு வர்த்தக உலகம் காட்டும் மதிப்பிலிருந்து நாம் பாடங்கள் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். செல்வம் சேர்ப்பது, இலாபத்தை அதிகரிப்பது என்ற குறிக்கோள்களுக்காக இயங்கும் பல்வேறு வர்த்தக நிறுவனங்கள் தங்கள் கொள்கைகளை உலகறியப் பறைசாற்றும் போது, அந்தக் கொள்கைத் திரட்டிற்கு அவர்கள் அளிக்கும் உயர்ந்ததொரு தலைப்பு என்ன தெரியுமா? Mission Statement, Vision Statement. அவர்கள் தங்கள் சுயநலக் கொள்கைகளை விளக்க இது போன்ற உயர்ந்த வார்த்தைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தும் போது, நாம் ஏன் தயங்க வேண்டும்?
மறைபரப்பு ஞாயிறு, அனுப்பப்படுதல் ஞாயிறு என்பதன் ஆழமான எண்ணங்களை உணர முயல்வோம். உலகில் பிறக்கும் நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் குறிப்பிட்டதொரு பணிக்கென அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். நமது தனித்துவத்தை உணர்ந்து நம்மையும் பிறரையும் மதிக்கக் கற்றுக் கொள்வோம். வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தாலும் கிடைக்காவிட்டாலும் நமக்கென குறிக்கப்பட்ட பணியை நிறைவேற்றுவோம்.
வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும்போது, வார்த்தைகளால் வலிமையோடு அறிவிப்போம்.வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கவில்லையெனில் வாழ்வால் இன்னும் அதிக வலிமையுடன் அறிவிப்போம்.
சிறு வயதில் வேதபோதக ஞாயிறுக்கு இரண்டு அல்லது மூன்று வாரங்களுக்கு முன்னதாகவே அறிவிப்புக்கள் வெளி வரும். திருத்தந்தையின் உருவம், புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காவின் படம் இவைகளைக் கொண்ட சுவரொட்டிகள் கோவிலைச் சுற்றி ஒட்டப்படும். இந்த ஞாயிறையொட்டி விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகள், பரிசு குலுக்கல்கள் நடத்தப்படும். ஒவ்வொரு பங்கிலும் நிதி திரட்டப்பட்டு, உரோமைக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்படும். வேதபோதக நாடுகளில், மிகக் கடினமானச் சூழ்நிலையில் மறைபரப்புப் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள குருக்கள், துறவியருக்கு இந்த நிதி அனுப்பப்படும். வேதபோதக, விசுவாசப் பரப்புதல் ஞாயிறென்றால் இவைகளே என் சிறுவயது எண்ணங்களாய் இருந்தன.
இன்று இந்த நாளைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கும் போது, வேறுபல, வெகுவாக மாறுபட்ட எண்ணங்கள் உள்ளத்தில் எழுகின்றன. இந்த ஞாயிறைக் குறிக்க நாம் பயன்படுத்தும் Mission Sunday என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொற்றொடரை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு நம் சிந்தனைகளைப் பகிர்வோம்.
Mission Sunday என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொற்றொடரை அப்படியே மொழி பெயர்த்தால், 'அனுப்பப்படும் ஞாயிறு' என்று சொல்லலாம். அனுப்பப்படுதல் என்பது அழகான ஓர் எண்ணம்.
"உலகில் பிறக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு குழந்தையும் இறைவனிடமிருந்து வரும் பரிசு. இந்தப் பரிசுப் பொருள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒரு செய்தியுடன் இவ்வுலகை அடைகிறது. 'இறைவன் இந்த உலகைக் குறித்து இன்னும் களைப்படையவில்லை' என்பதே அச்செய்தி."
இதைச் சொன்னவர் இந்திய மகாக் கவி இரவீந்திரநாத் தாகூர். நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். ஒரு பரிசாக அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். உலக வரலாற்றில், மனித வரலாற்றில் நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தனிப்பட்ட ஓர் இடம் உண்டு. நாம் பிறந்ததற்குத் தனிப்பட்ட ஒரு காரணம் உண்டு. நமக்கேனக் குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள, நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள அந்தக் குறிக்கோளை வேறு ஒருவராலும் நிறைவேற்ற முடியாது.
சென்ற மாதம் திருத்தந்தையால் இங்கிலாந்தில் முத்திபேறு பெற்றவராக உயர்த்தப்பட்ட கர்தினால் நியூமன் எழுதிய ஒரு தியானத்தில் காணப்படும் ஒரு பகுதியைத் திருத்தந்தை தன் மறையுரையில் கூறினார்.
"ஒரு தனிப்பட்டப் பணிக்கென இறைவன் என்னைப் படைத்துள்ளார். வேறு எவருக்கும் அவர் கொடுக்காமல், எனக்கு மட்டுமே அப்பணியைக் கொடுத்துள்ளார்." என்று நியூமன் கூறியுள்ளார்.
கேட்க, பேச, பார்க்க இயலாமல் இருந்தாலும், தன் வாழ்வின் மூலம் சாதனைகளைப் புரிந்து வரலாற்றில் தனி இடம் பெற்றுள்ள Helen Kellerம் தாகூர், நியூமன் ஆகியோரின் எண்ணங்களைத் தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில் கூறியுள்ளார்:
"என்னால் இவ்வுலகில் எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்ய முடியாது. ஆனாலும், என்னால் ஒரு சிலவற்றைச் செய்ய முடியும். எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்ய முடியவில்லை என்பதற்காக, நான் செய்யக் கூடிய சிலவற்றைச் செய்ய மறுக்க மாட்டேன்."
கடல் மணலைக் கயிறாகத் திரிக்கவோ, வானத்தை வில்லாக வளைக்கவோ நமக்கு அழைப்பு இல்லாமல் போகலாம், அதற்குரிய திறமைகள் இல்லாமல் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், நமக்கென்று மனித வரலாற்றில் தனியிடம் உள்ளது. அதற்காக நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம், இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளோம். நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ள பரிசுப் பொருட்கள். பிறரும் பரிசுப் பொருள்கள். அதனால் நாம் அனைவரும் மதிப்பிற்குரியவர்கள். ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தனிப்பட்டதொரு பணி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. நம்மால் இயன்றவரை அப்பணியைச் செய்வது நமது பெருமை... நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் அவரவர் தனித்துவத்தை உணர்வது, அதன் அடிப்படையில் நம்மை மதித்து, பிறரையும் மதிக்கப் பழகுவது நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள முதல் Mission.
வேதபோதக அல்லது மறைபரப்பு ஞாயிறு என்றதும் அது வழக்கமாக குருக்கள், துறவியருக்கென ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட பணி என்று நம்மில் பலர் ஒதுங்கி விடுகிறோம். ஆனால், இந்த நாளை “அனுப்பப்படும் ஞாயிறு” என்று எண்ணிப் பார்த்தால், வேறுபட்ட எண்ணங்கள் மனதில் தோன்றும்.
பிரசங்கம், மறையுரை என்று பீடத்திலிருந்து, அல்லது ஒலிபெருக்கிகள் மூலம் முழங்கினால்தான் இறைவார்த்தையை, நற்செய்தியை, மறையைப் பரப்ப முடியும் என்பது மறைபரப்பின் ஒரு கண்ணோட்டம். Mission என்பதன் முழுமையான கண்ணோட்டம் இது அல்ல. சென்ற ஞாயிறு வாசகங்களில் தரப்பட்ட பவுல் அடியாரின் கூற்று ஒன்று நம் சிந்தனைகளுக்கு உதவும்.

"இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவி. வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தாலும், கிடைக்காவிட்டாலும் இதைச் செய்வதில் கருத்தாயிரு."
வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் போது, மேடை போட்டு, ஒலிபெருக்கிகள் வைத்து இறைவார்த்தையை உரக்கச் சொல்லலாம். ஆனால், பல நேரங்களில் இப்படிச் சொல்லப்படும் இறைவார்த்தைகள் எவ்வளவு ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை உண்டாக்குகின்றன என்பது கேள்விக் குறியாகிறது. சிறப்பாக, இந்தியாவில் ஏற்படும் மதப் பிரச்சனைகளில் ஒலிபெருக்கிகளுக்கும் ஒரு பங்கு உண்டு என்பது கசப்பான ஓர் உண்மை. மேடையிட்டுக் கூறாமல், சிறு குழுக்களில் பகிரப்படும் இறைவார்த்தையும் பலரது வாழ்வில் தாக்கங்களை உண்டாக்கியுள்ளன.
சிறு குழுக்கள் என்றதும் முதலில் நம் குடும்பங்களை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கலாம். நமது குடும்பங்களில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இறைவார்த்தை சிறிது நேரமாவது பகிரப்பட்டால் பல நன்மைகள் விளையும். குடும்பங்களில் நாம் மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டிய மறைபரப்புப் பணி மிகவும் சவால் நிறைந்த ஒரு பணி.
நமது பணிச் சூழல்களில், நண்பர்கள் நடுவில், சிறு குழுக்களில் பகிரப்படும் இறை வார்த்தைகள் ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை உருவாக்குவதை நாம் கண்கூடாகக் காணலாம். Basic Christian Communities என்று இலத்தீன் அமெரிக்காவில், பிலிப்பின்ஸில் உருவான அடிப்படை கிறிஸ்தவக் குழுக்கள் வழியே இறைவனைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டவர்கள், இறைவனிடம் மீண்டும் வந்தவர்கள் பல ஆயிரம் பேர். கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாய் இந்தக் குழுக்கள் இந்தியாவிலும் வளர்ந்து வந்துள்ளது மகிழ்ச்சி தரும் ஒரு செய்தி.
மேடையிட்டோ, குழுக்களிலோ இறைவார்த்தையைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வாய்ப்பு இல்லாத போதும் இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவிக்கச் சொல்கிறார் பவுல் அடியார். வாய் வார்த்தைகளைக் காட்டிலும் வாழ்வினால் நாம் அறிவிக்கும் இறைவார்த்தைகள் மக்கள் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதியும்.
"உன் அயலவர் மீது அன்பு காட்டு" (யோவான் 13:34) என்பதை வார்த்தைகளில் சொல்வது ஒருவகை தாக்கத்தை உண்டாக்கும். அதே வார்த்தைகளை வாழ்ந்து காட்டும்போது, அதன் தாக்கம் இன்னும் ஆழமாக இருக்கும்.
"ஏழு முறையல்ல... எழுபது முறை ஏழு முறை மன்னித்து விடு" (மத்தேயு 18:22) என்று இயேசு விடுத்த சவாலைச் சப்தமாகச் சொல்லிப் புரிய வைக்கலாம். அல்லது தவறிழைக்கும் ஒருவரை ஏழுமுறை எழுபது முறை... அதாவது எந்நேரமும் மன்னிப்பதன் வழியாகவும் கிறிஸ்துவின் நற்செய்தியைப் பறை சாற்றலாம்.
திருச்சபையின் ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் இறை வார்த்தையை, கிறிஸ்துவின் புதிய வழியை வார்த்தைகளால் பறை சாற்றுவதற்குப் பதில், வாழ்வின் வழியாகப் பறை சாற்றியவர்கள் முதல் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள். இந்த ஆரம்ப கால கிறிஸ்தவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோர் அப்போஸ்தலர்களோ, சீடர்களோ, குருக்களோ இல்லை... சாதாரண, எளிய மக்கள். இவர்களது வாழ்வைப் பார்த்து வியந்தவர்கள் அதிகம். அந்த வழியைப் பின்பற்றியவர்கள் அதிகம். திருத்தூதர் பணியின் முதல் சில பிரிவுகளில் இவர்களது வாழ்வைக் குறித்து பல குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன.
