Rest as I have rested… Love as I have loved… நான் ஓய்வேடுத்ததைப் போல்… நான் அன்பு செய்ததைப் போல்…

Harold Kushner in his book ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’ recounts an interesting anecdote: “I read of a group of tourists on safari in Africa. They had hired several native porters to carry their supplies while they trekked. After three days, the porters told them that they would have to stop and rest for a day. They were not tired, they explained, but ‘we have walked too far and too fast and now we must wait for our souls to catch up to us.’”
This statement by the native porters may sound pretty strange and even funny at first glance. But, they have a deep meaning. The author of Psalm 23 speaks of the sheep lying down in green pastures and being led by quiet streams of water. These are wonderful imageries of peace and rest. This serenity seems to restore the soul. The suggestion of the African porters as well as the psalmist is very much needed in this fast paced world.

One of the privileges I enjoyed as a college teacher for the past few years was the trust some of my students had in me. Quite a few former students would come back to visit me and, after a bit of warm up chit chat, they would begin to share the problems they face in their profession. One of those problems was the emptiness they would feel on some days. They would say: “Father, when I come home some days I feel very lost and empty. I don’t know what I am doing with my life.” I have discussed this profound sentiment with some of them. What I have discovered in such conversations are these factors:
Almost all the youngsters begin their career with lots of enthusiasm… rather, over enthusiasm. They are not satisfied accomplishing only the tasks assigned to them but voluntarily accept the works of others and try to complete them in quick time… sometimes at lightning speed. Their main focus is to impress the higher-ups favourably. They do not bother about their health, rest, meals, family… even, friends… just work, work and more work.
How long can this go on? If their job is dull drab and monotonously repetitive, then the enthusiasm evaporates after a few months. Fortunately, most of my students are involved in creative jobs. So, their enthusiasm takes a longer time to wane. But, they too are human beings and so other factors begin plaguing them. In my discussions with them, I have found that they feel more lost when they have to compromise on some ethical questions. In other words, when questions of conscience come up, they are more lost.
Following the way of the world, keeping pace with the breakneck speed and the cut-throat competition leaves them high and dry. Many of us know the famous caution given by St Ignatius of Loyola to St Francis Xavier when the latter was pursuing the glory of this world. Ignatius was simply echoing the words of Christ found in all the three synoptic gospels.
Matthew 16: 25-26
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

When someone does some work with total involvement, we say that they ‘put their heart and soul’ in it. When such works do not bring the expected results, the soul that was put in it does not come back… it probably is lost… like the lamb that gets lost in the desert!
“The world asks so much of us. We give ourselves so totally to our work, to the task of raising our family and running a home, to our volunteer commitments that we often forget to take time to nourish our souls…We lack the wisdom of those native porters, the wisdom to know that we have left our souls behind and we need to stop and let our souls catch up to us… The Bible thought that the need to have God restore our souls was so important that it listed the Sabbath as a day of rest as one of the Ten Commandments, along with the obligation to honour one’s parents and the forbidding of murder and adultery.” (Harold Kushner)

Reading through the passage (Ex. 20: 10-11) that talks of God proposing the Ten Commandments, one thought struck me. The Sabbath day commandment is very unique among all the ten commandments. In all the other commandments it is a simple rule: ‘do this’ or ‘don’t do this’. This is the only commandment where God says ‘do this as I have done’. God has rested from work and therefore we also need to rest.
Exodus 20: 10-11
…the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

While reading these lines, my mind instinctively went to John’s Gospel where Christ says: “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34) God and Christ seem to tell us, “Rest as I have rested… Love as I have loved you…” Rest and Love are taught with the most sublime models – God the Father and Christ. Rest and Love – this combination may seem a bit stretched and artificial. But, if we rest for a while and reflect, we shall discover the intrinsic link between resting and loving.
Any rest leaves us refreshed. When problems heap up, one is asked to ‘take a break’ or ‘sleep over it’. Rest can surely help us see things better. In any tough situation, the immediate reaction is panic, anger, irritation, impatience etc… When we take a break and revisit the same situation, control, calmness, clarity and love seem to resurface.

Sometimes we are forced into rest due to various factors. When taken in the right spirit, such forced rest works magic in our life. The whole world had been very relieved with the rescue operation of 33 miners from San Jose mines in Chile. I have shared some of my thoughts about this event in my posting last Sunday (October 17). This forced rest, retreat for those 33 miners underground for 69 days have surely restored their soul and brought God close to their lives. On October 12, when the rescue efforts commenced, the youngest of those miners Jimmy Sanchez, aged 19, sent a message that read like this: “We are actually 34 down here. God is with us and never left us.” Jimmy’s note has created quite a few ripples in the internet world and many youngsters are sharing their views.
Let us learn the art of resting and loving from the supreme models God the Father and Christ. May the Shepherd restore our souls by teaching us how to rest.(If possible kindly re-visit my reflection posted on Sep.08… “Learning to rest… a great art!”)

ஆப்ரிக்கக் காடுகளில் 'Safari' என்ற சுற்றுலாப் பயணங்கள் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும். பலர் இப்பயணங்களை வாகனங்களிலும், ஒரு சிலர் நடைபயணமாகவும் மேற்கொள்வர். நடைபயணமாகச் சென்ற ஒரு சுற்றுலாக் குழுவோடு உள்நாட்டு ஆப்ரிக்கத் தொழிலாளிகள் அவர்களது சுமைகளை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு நடந்தனர். அக்குழுவினர் மூன்று, அல்லது நான்கு நாட்கள் நடந்தபின், அத்தொழிலாளிகள் சுமைகளை இறக்கி வைத்துவிட்டு, சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளிடம், "நாம் இங்கு ஒரு நாள் தங்க வேண்டும்." என்றனர். சுமைகளைச் சுமந்ததால் அதிகம் களைத்துவிட்டனரோ என்று அவர்களை விசாரித்தபோது, அத்தொழிலாளிகள் தந்த பதில் விநோதமாக இருந்தது. "நாங்கள் களைத்துப் போக வில்லை. ஆனால், நமது உடல் வேகமாக இக்காட்டில் நடந்து வந்து விட்டது. நமது ஆன்மா அந்த வேகத்தில் நம்முடன் வரவில்லை. எனவே, ஒரு நாள் இங்கு தங்கினால், நமது ஆன்மாவும் வந்து சேர்ந்துவிடும்." என்றனர் அந்த ஆப்ரிக்கத் தொழிலாளிகள்.
Harold Kushner எழுதியுள்ள ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ புத்தகத்தில் 23ம் திருப்பாடலின் மூன்றாம் வரியான "He restores my soul" "அவர் என் ஆன்மாவை மீண்டும் எனக்களிக்கிறார்." என்ற வரியை விளக்கும் போது இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
ஆப்ரிக்கத் தொழிலாளிகள் சொன்னது சிறிது வேடிக்கையாக, விநோதமாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அதில் உள்ள பொருளை உணர்ந்து கொள்வது நல்லது. வெகு விரைவாக, இராக்கெட் வேகத்தில் செல்லும் இந்த உலகுடன் போட்டி போட்டுக் கொண்டு ஓடிக் கொண்டே இருக்கும் நமக்கு, இது போன்ற ஓர் அறிவுரை தேவைதானே. நாம் புத்துயிர் பெறவேண்டும், நமது ஆன்மாவை மீண்டும் பெற வேண்டும் என்று 23ம் திருப்பாடலின் ஆசிரியர் கூறுவதும் இதுதானே.

கல்லூரியில் நான் பணி செய்தபோது, என்னிடம் படித்து முடித்த மாணவர்கள் அவ்வப்போது என்னைச் சந்திக்க வருவார்கள். அவர்களில் பலர் தொலைக்காட்சி, திரைப்படம், விளம்பரம் என்று தொடர்புசாதனத் துறைகளில் பணி செய்பவர்கள். இத்துறைகளில் நான்கு அல்லது ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் உழைத்தபின், அவர்களில் ஒரு சிலர் என்னிடம் பகிர்ந்து கொண்ட ஒரு பொதுவான அனுபவம் இது. "Father, இப்பெல்லாம் பல நாட்கள் வேலை முடிந்து வீட்டுக்கு வரும்போது, எதையோ தொலைச்சிட்டு வந்ததைப் போல இருக்கு." என்று சொல்வார்கள்.
இப்படி அவர்கள் சொல்லும் போது, அவர்களுடன் இதைப் பற்றி இன்னும் ஆழமாக பேசியிருக்கிறேன். அப்போது ஒரு சில உண்மைகளை நான் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். எந்த ஒரு துறையிலும் ஓர் இளைஞன் அல்லது இளம் பெண் பணியை ஆரம்பிக்கும் போது, ஆர்வம் அவர்களை அதிகம் ஆக்ரமிக்கும். வழி நடத்திச் செல்லும். அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட பணியை விட, அவர்களாகவே பல பணிகளை இழுத்துப் போட்டுக் கொண்டு செய்வார்கள். மேலிடத்தில் உள்ளவர்களின் கவனத்தை நல்ல முறையில் ஈர்க்கவேண்டும் என்று அவர்கள் மேற்கொள்ளும் முயற்சிகள் இவை. இரவு, பகல், பசி, தூக்கம், உடல் நலம், வீடு, குடும்பம் என்று எதைப் பற்றியும் அதிக அக்கறை கொள்ளாமல் அத்தனை ஈடுபாட்டுடன் உழைப்பார்கள்.

இந்த வேகம், இந்த ஆர்வம், இந்த ஈடுபாடு எத்தனை நாட்கள் இருக்க முடியும்?
இவர்கள் எடுத்துக் கொண்ட பணிகள் வெகு சாதாரணமான வேலைகள், தினம், தினம் செய்யக்கூடிய ஒரே வகையான பணிகள் என்றால், இந்த வேகம் ஈடுபாடு எல்லாம் விரைவில் காய்ந்து விடும், கரைந்து மறைந்து விடும்.
என்னுடைய மாணவர்களில் பலர் கலைநயம் மிக்க, படைப்பாற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டவர்கள் என்பதால், இந்த ஈடுபாடு கூடுதல் நாட்கள் நீடிக்கும். ஆனால், நாட்கள் செல்லச் செல்ல, வருடங்கள் போகப் போக பல்வேறு பிரச்சனைகள் எழும். அந்தப் பிரச்சனைகளை அலசும்போது, அவைகளில் பல பிரச்சனைகள் மனசாட்சி தொடர்பானவைகளாக இருப்பதைக் காணலாம்.
பணி இடங்களில் பல ஆண்டுகள் ஊறிப்போன மூத்தவர்கள் காட்டும் குறுக்கு வழிகள், பிறருடன் எழும் போட்டிகள், அந்தப் போட்டிகளில் வெற்றிபெற மனசாட்சியை அடகு வைத்தல், நேரிய கொள்கைகளுக்கு முற்றிலும் மாறான சமரசங்கள், பணத் தொடர்பான பிரச்சனைகள் என்று சிறிது, சிறிதாக மலை போல் குவிந்து விடும் குப்பைகளைக் கண்டு இளையோர் மலைத்து விடுகிறார்கள். அந்தக் குப்பையிலிருந்து எழும் துர்நாற்றம் அவர்களது மூச்சை, அவர்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் மனசாட்சியின் மூச்சை, nephesh என்று சென்ற வாரம் சிந்தித்தோமே அந்த இறைவனின் மூச்சையே நிறுத்தும் போது, இவர்கள் நிலை குலைந்து போகிறார்கள். வழி தடுமாறுகிறார்கள். வீடு திரும்பும் போது, எதையோ பறி கொடுத்ததைப் போல், தொலைத்து விட்டதைப் போல் உணர்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் முக்கியமாகத் தொலைப்பது அவர்களது மனசாட்சியை, ஆன்மாவை.

இவ்வுலகத்தின் வழிகளுக்கு, வேகத்திற்கு ஈடுகொடுக்க வேண்டுமெனில் இது போன்ற இழப்புக்களைச் சந்திக்க வேண்டியிருக்கும். 16ம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த புனித இலோயோலா இஞ்ஞாசியார், பாரிஸ் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் உலகப் புகழைத் தேடி ஓடிக் கொண்டிருந்த புனித பிரான்சிஸ் சவேரியாருக்கு இந்த ஆபத்தைப் பற்றி எச்சரிக்கை கொடுத்தார் என்ற வரலாறு நம்மில் பலருக்குத் தெரியும். இஞ்ஞாசியார் தன் கற்பனையிலிருந்து இவ்வெச்சரிக்கையைத் தரவில்லை. இயேசு கூறிய எச்சரிக்கையை அவர் எதிரொலித்தார். இயேசு கூறிய இந்த எச்சரிக்கை மத்தேயு, மாற்கு, லூக்கா என்ற மூன்று நற்செய்திகளிலும் காணக்கிடக்கின்றது.
மத்தேயு 16: 25-26
ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக் கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவர். மாறாக என்பொருட்டுத் தம்மையே அழித்துக் கொள்கிற எவரும் வாழ்வடைவார். மனிதர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் ஆதாயமாக்கிக்கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பாரெனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்?
(மாற்கு 8: 35-36; லூக்கா 9: 24-25)

ஆன்மாவை, மனசாட்சியை இழக்காமல் வாழ்ந்த புனித பிரான்சிஸ் சவேரியாரைப் போல இன்னும் பல கோடி புனிதர்கள் நமக்கு வாழ்க்கைப் பாடங்களைத் தந்து சென்றுள்ளனர். அதேபோல், உலகை வெல்வதாய் நினைத்து ஆன்மாவை இழந்து, இறுதியில் தற்கொலையில் தங்கள் வாழ்வை முடித்துக் கொண்ட கிளியோபாட்ரா, ராபர்ட் கிளைவ், அடால்ப் ஹிட்லர், போன்றவர்களின் வரலாறும் நமக்குப் பாடமாய் அமைகிறது.

ஒருவர் முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன் ஒரு பணியைச் செய்வதைக் குறிக்க 'உயிரைக் கொடுத்து வேலை செய்கிறார்' என்று கூறுகிறோம். ஆங்கிலத்தில் 'putting one's heart and soul' என்ற உருவகத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். அதாவது, ஒருவர் தன் இதயத்தையும், ஆன்மாவையும் தந்து பணி செய்கிறார் என்று சொல்வர். இதைத்தான் குமரகுருபர சுவாமிகள், நீதி நெறி விளக்கம்:52ல் இவ்விதம் கூறியுள்ளார்:
மெய்வருத்தம் பாரார் பசிநோக்கார் கண் துஞ்சார்
எவ்வெவர் தீமையும் மேற்கொள்ளார் – செவ்வி
அருமையும் பாரார் அவமதிப்பும் கொள்ளார்
கருமமே கண் ஆயினார்.

இப்படி எந்நேரமும் இயந்திரகதியில் ஓடும் வாழ்வில் ஆன்மாவை இழக்கும் ஆபத்து உள்ளதென உணர்ந்த இறைவன், ஒய்வுநாளை உண்டாக்கி, அதைப் புனிதமாக்கினார். “நமது உடல் வேகமாக வந்து விட்டது நமது ஆன்மா வந்து சேரும்வரை இங்கு தங்குவோம்” என்று இந்தச் சிந்தனையின் துவக்கத்தில் நாம் குறிப்பிட்ட அந்த ஆப்ரிக்கத் தொழிலாளிகள் சொன்னதையும் இறைவன் நமக்குத் தந்துள்ள இந்த ஒய்வுநாள் கட்டளையுடன் இணைத்துப் பார்க்கலாம்.
கடவுள் தந்த பத்து கட்டளைகளில், தாய் தந்தையை மதித்து நட, கொலை செய்யாதே போன்ற மிக முக்கியமான கட்டளைகளுக்கு இணையாகக் கடவுள் தந்த கட்டளை ஒய்வு நாளை கடைபிடிக்க மறவாதே என்பது. வேறு எந்தக் கட்டளைக்கும் இல்லாத ஒரு தனித்துவம் இந்தக் கட்டளைக்கு மட்டும் உண்டு. வேறு எந்த கட்டளைக்கும் தன்னை ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாகக் கூறாத இறைவன், இந்த ஒய்வு நாள் கட்டளையைக் கூறும் போது தன்னையே ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாகக் கூறியுள்ளார்.

விடுதலைப் பயணம் 20: 10-11
ஏழாம் நாளோ உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவருக்கான ஓய்வு நாள். எனவே அன்று நீயும் உன் மகனும் மகளும் உன் அடிமையும் அடிமைப்பெண்ணும் உன் கால்நடைகளும் உன் நகர்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் அன்னியனும் யாதொரு வேலையும் செய்ய வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில், ஆண்டவர் ஆறு நாள்களில் விண்ணுலகையும், மண்ணுலகையும், கடலையும், அவற்றிலுள்ள அனைத்தையும் படைத்து ஏழாம் நாளில் ஓய்ந்திருந்தார். இவ்வாறு ஆண்டவர் ஓய்வு நாளுக்கு ஆசிவழங்கி அதனைப் புனிதப்படுத்தினார்.

தான் ஓய்வெடுத்தது போல் நம்மையும் ஓய்வெடுக்க அழைக்கும் இறைவனின் இந்தக் கூற்று நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு சொன்ன மற்றொரு கூற்றை எனக்கு நினைவுபடுத்துகிறது.
யோவான் நற்செய்தி 13: 34
'ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துங்கள்' என்னும் புதிய கட்டளையை நான் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன். நான் உங்களிடம் அன்பு செலுத்தியது போல நீங்களும் ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துங்கள்.

நான் ஓய்வேடுத்ததைப் போல் நீங்களும் ஓய்வெடுங்கள் என்று கூறினார் இறைவன். நான் அன்பு செய்ததைப் போல் நீங்களும் அன்பு செலுத்துங்கள் என்று கூறினார் இயேசு. ஓய்வேடுப்பதையும் அன்பு காட்டுவதையும் இணைத்துப் பார்ப்பது செயற்கையாகத் தெரியலாம். ஆனால், சிறிது நிதானமாக, ஓய்வெடுத்து சிந்தித்தால் இதன் இணைப்பு விளங்கும். எந்த ஒரு சூழ்நிலையிலும் சிறிது ஒய்வு கிடைக்கும் போது, அந்தச் சூழலைப் பற்றிய தெளிவு கிடைக்கும். முக்கியமாக, பிரச்சனைகள் மத்தியில் நாம் மலைத்துப் போயிருக்கும் நேரத்தில் ஒய்வு கட்டாயம் பல தெளிவுகளை உருவாக்கும். உடலளவில் நாம் எடுக்கும் ஒய்வு உள்ளத்தில் பல விந்தைகளைச் செய்யும்.
சில சமயங்களில் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக நமக்குக் கிடைக்கும் ஓய்வும் நமது வாழ்வின் அவசியமான, அவசியமற்ற உண்மைகளை வெளிச்சம் போட்டுக் காண்பிக்கும். அண்மையில் இந்த உலகமே வியந்து பாராட்டிய சிலே நாட்டு சுரங்க விபத்தில் நடந்ததும் இதுதானே. 69 நாட்கள் பூமிக்கடியில் புதைக்கப்பட்ட அந்த 33 தொழிலாளர்களும் இறைவனை அதிகம் நினைத்தனர். இறைவனிடம் நெருங்கி வந்தனர் என்பதற்கு பல சம்பவங்கள் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளன. அத்தொழிலாளர்களில் மிக இளையவரான 19 வயது நிரம்பிய Jimmy Sanchez என்பவர் அனுப்பிய ஒரு செய்தியில் "இங்கு உண்மையிலேயே 34 பேர் இருக்கிறோம். கடவுள் எங்களை விட்டு எங்கும் செல்லவில்லை. எங்களுடனேயே தங்கி இருக்கிறார்." என்று கூறினார். இந்தச் செய்தி பலரையும், பல வழிகளில் பாதித்துள்ளது. அதிலும் இளையோர் இது குறித்து கணனியில் பல செய்திகள் எழுதி வருகின்றனர்.
ஒய்வு நம் மனதை, உடலை புத்துயிர் பெறச் செய்யும். உயிரைக் கொடுத்து நாம் செய்யும் பணியால் நாம் இழந்த உயிரை, ஆன்மாவை மீண்டும் நமக்குத் தரும் வல்லமை பெற்றது ஒய்வு. இந்த ஒய்வு நேரத்தை நம் குடும்பங்களுடன், அதுவும் குடும்பத்துடன் கூடிவந்து செபிப்பதில் செலவிட்டால், நாம் இழந்த ஆன்மாவை மட்டுமல்ல, நாம் இழந்த நிம்மதி, உடல் நலம், குடும்பப் பாசம் என்று பலவற்றையும் நாம் மீண்டும் கண்டடைய முடியும். "அவர் எனக்குப் புத்துயிர் அளிக்கிறார். என் ஆன்மாவை மீண்டும் எனக்களிக்கிறார்." என்ற 23ம் திருப்பாடலின் வரிகள் நம்மைத் தொடர்ந்து வழி நடத்த வேண்டுவோம்.
