We begin today’s reflections with an anecdote narrated by one of the Presbyterian Ministers: When I was at Duke, Will Willimon was telling our class about a parent who called him one day, very upset, and said, “I hold you personally responsible for this!” It turns out his daughter was going to - in his words - “throw it all away” to go do mission work in Haiti with the Presbyterian Church: “A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke, and she’s going to dig ditches in Haiti!” As the conversation went on, Willimon pointed out that it was actually the parents who had started all of this. They were the ones who had her baptized, who read Bible stories to her, who took her to Sunday School. “You’re the ones who introduced her to Jesus, not me,” he said. And the father said, “But all we ever wanted her to be was a Presbyterian.”

To be a Presbyterian, to be a Roman Catholic, to be a Christian… What does it imply to be an ‘average Christian’, fulfilling the Sunday obligations, doing some charitable works that do not involve too many risks? When someone decides to follow Christ, it becomes very challenging. Discipleship was, is, and will always be tough. When we listen to Jesus in today’s gospel, we get some idea of what is in store for a true disciple of Jesus.

Luke 14: 25-27

Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

Another young woman, Agnes, from Albania took up this challenge at the age of 18 and left her family as well as her country and joined a religious congregation in order to help people in India. At the age of 40, she decided to leave her congregation and follow Jesus more radically by founding another congregation to help the poor and marginalized people of India. Known throughout the world as ‘Mother Teresa’, she is also called by other titles like ‘Angel of the slums’ and ‘Saint of the gutters’. She was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016, during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Tomorrow, September 5, we celebrate the Silver Jubilee of St Mother Teresa’s death – Sep. 5, 1997. We thank God for inspiring St Mother Teresa to pay the price of being a true disciple of Christ.

Millions of other young men and women have paid a heavy price to become a true disciple of Christ. One of them is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who not only wrote the inspiring, famous book ‘The Cost of Discipleship’, but also practiced what he wrote.

Here is an extract of a sermon titled ‘The Cost of Discipleship’, preached by Dr. Mark E. Hardgrove on the Gospel passage of this Sunday:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer lived in Germany during the regime of Hitler. Bonhoeffer was part of the resistance to the Gestapo, and though he lived in America for a short time and could have avoided persecution, he chose to go back to Germany. He went to encourage others in Germany, especially the church, to refuse to crumble before the despot government ruling the country that he loved. Eventually Bonhoeffer, along with other members of his family, were arrested and placed in concentration camps. While in Tegel Prison, Bonhoeffer was a source of encouragement to many other prisoners. Even the guards took a liking to him and they often smuggled out his writings and poems. Eventually, Bonhoeffer was executed at the Flossenburg Concentration Camp on April 9th, 1945, just a few days before it was liberated by the Allies.

I told you all of this to let you know that the man who wrote the book ‘The Cost of Discipleship’ was writing out of experience… Bonhoeffer didn’t just write about this, but he lived and died the truths he believed. He understood the cost of discipleship, he counted those costs, and still he chose to follow Jesus rather than capitulate to the popular political agenda of the time.

A quick, superficial glance at the second part of today’s gospel (verses Lk. 14:28-33) gives us a sense of comfort.

Luke 14:28-33

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.”

‘He who fails to plan, plans to fail’ is a basic tenet of management lessons. Planning a course of action, planning a career, is basic common sense. Jesus, after having spoken some tough words, really tough words, about discipleship in the first part of today’s gospel (verses Lk. 14:25-27), suddenly becomes a master in management lessons… lessons in how to plan a building, how to plan a war… This is what gives us the feeling of comfort.

In my comfort zone, I began dreaming of some ‘what if’s… We are aware of the popular books ‘If Aristotle Ran General Motors’ and ‘If Harry Potter Ran General Electric’ written by Tom Morris. ‘If Jesus Taught in a Business School’ was the title of my book… To my surprise, in Google search, I came across two books with similar titles: ‘Jesus CEO’ by Laurie Beth Jones (1995), and ‘Jesus Christ: Millionaire, Entrepreneur, CEO’ by John R.Colt Ph.D., (2002). Thinking of Jesus as a CEO, or, as a Professor in a business school, was a cute dream!

As I was lost in these dreams, came the PUNCH… The last line of today’s Gospel! It was a KNOCKOUT PUNCH! “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has, cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)

When I read this last line, I felt as if some logic was missing there. Sometimes in our Sunday liturgy, we omit certain verses in our readings. I thought that in today’s Gospel some verses were omitted before this final line. So, I checked. No. Today’s Gospel was Luke 14: 25 to 33 with no omission. The last line simply flowed from the previous lines.

• Now, what is the big fuss about this last line and calling it a punch etc.?
• The last line reads this way: “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has, cannot be my disciple.”
• Yes, I can see that… Jesus always talks about sacrifice, giving up etc… So what?
• Not so fast, dear Friend. Please read the last line again.

If Jesus had simply said ‘If any of you who does not give up…’ it would have been the usual ‘formula’ of Jesus. But, this sentence begins with ‘In the same way…’ This phrase seems out of place here. But, on deeper reflection, this line seems to be the punch line of the whole Gospel… perhaps, the whole concept about discipleship for me. That is why I wish to call this the Knockout Punch!

The phrase ‘In the same way…’ set me thinking. In the same… which way?

This is how I rephrase this last line of Jesus… Jesus seems to say: “When one of you wants to build a tower or when one of you goes to war, don’t you sit down and plan every detail? Building a tower occupies your mind day and night, every day… Going to war may occupy not only your days and nights, but precious years of your life. In the same way… IN THE SAME WAY… becoming my disciple should involve you, should occupy your thoughts, words and deeds day and night, every day, ALL YOUR LIFE.” Dear Friends, this is how I interpret the phrase ‘In the same way…’ used by Jesus in the last line of this Gospel passage.

How many, in today’s world have given up sleep, food, family… so many necessities of life in order to reach a position or power. We have surely seen and heard of people who pursued, or who were ‘driven’ by a dream in their life. Perhaps, a ‘worldly’ dream! We have also seen and heard of those who have pursued ‘other-worldly’ dreams… like Mother Teresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Stan Swamy and many other saints – recognised and unrecognised by the Church! This is the real challenge for us… to match the passion and perseverance of those who pursue ‘this worldly’ and ‘other-worldly’ dreams… This is the criterion to become a true disciple!

Our closing thoughts are on the disciple of Jesus par excellence - Our Lady! On September 8, coming Thursday we celebrate the Birthday of Our Mother Mary. It is also celebrated as the Feast of Our Lady of Good Health, one of the most popular feasts in Tamil Nadu, India. Thousands of devotees are flocking to the famous shrine of Our Lady of Velankanni, as well as in other shrines erected for Our Lady of Good Health.

We pray, through the intercession of Our Lady of Good Health, that this Feast, celebrated after the scare of Covid pandemic, restores the health of the human family. We also pray that Our Lady may make all of us true disciples of Our Lord, to bring more health, happiness, peace and harmony in India as well as the world!

P.S. By the way, today’s reflections on discipleship are meant NOT ONLY for priests and religious. Jesus did not address these words to his disciples when they were alone. The first line of today’s Gospel says: Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said… Yes. This gospel is addressed to the large crowds, to every Christian, to you and me!

அந்த ஊருக்குப் புதிதாக மாற்றலாகிவந்த பங்கு அருள்பணியாளர், இளையோரை அதிகம் கவர்ந்தார். அவர் அங்கு வருவதற்குமுன், வறுமைப்பட்ட ஒரு நாட்டில் பல ஆண்டுகள் பணியாற்றிவர். எனவே, அவர், அந்நாட்டில் தான் பெற்ற ஆழமான அனுபவங்களை இளையோரிடம் பகிர்ந்துவந்தார்.

ஒருமுறை, ஞாயிறு திருப்பலி முடிந்தபின், ஓர் இளம்பெண்ணின் பெற்றோர் அவரைக் காண காத்திருந்தனர். அருள்பணியாளர் அறைக்குள் நுழைந்ததும், "சாமி, எங்கள் மகள் எடுத்துள்ள அர்த்தமற்ற, ஆபத்தான முடிவுக்கு நீங்கள்தான் காரணம்" என்று குற்றம் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தனர். அவர்கள் மகள் எடுத்த முடிவு என்ன? நிலநடுக்கத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஓர் ஏழை நாட்டில் ஆறு மாதங்கள் உழைக்கச் செல்வதாக அந்த இளம்பெண் பெற்றோரிடம் கூறியிருந்தார். அந்த முடிவு, பெற்றோரை நிலைகுலைய வைத்தது. அப்பெண் கல்லூரிப் படிப்பை முடிக்க இன்னும் ஓராண்டு இருந்தது. அவ்வேளையில் இதுபோன்ற ஒரு முடிவா? என்று திகைத்த பெற்றோரிடம், தன் கல்லூரிப் படிப்பு ஓராண்டு காத்திருக்கலாம், ஆனால், நிலநடுக்கத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்கள் காத்திருப்பது, அநீதி என்று மகள் வாதாடினார். தங்கள் மகளை இவ்விதம் மாற்றியது, பங்குத்தந்தை என்று எண்ணி, அவரிடம் முறையிட வந்திருந்தனர், பெற்றோர்.  

"எங்கள் மகளிடம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள மாற்றத்திற்கு நீங்கள்தான் பொறுப்பேற்கவேண்டும்" என்று இளம்பெண்ணின் பெற்றோர் சொன்னதும், பங்குத்தந்தை ஒரு புன்முறுவலுடன், "இல்லை... நீங்கள்தான் பொறுப்பேற்கவேண்டும்" என்று அவர்களிடமே திரும்பக் கூறினார். ஆச்சரியத்துடன் அவரைப் பார்த்த பெற்றோரிடம், "ஆம், உங்கள் மகளுக்கு முதலில் கிறிஸ்துவை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியது யார்? நான் இல்லையே" என்று அருள்பணியாளர் சொன்னார். உடனே, அந்த பெற்றோர், "எங்கள் மகள் ஒரு சராசரி கிறிஸ்தவப் பெண்ணாக வளரவேண்டும் என்றுமட்டும்தான் நாங்கள் எதிர்பார்த்தோம். அதற்காகத்தான் கிறிஸ்துவை அறிமுகப்படுத்தினோம்" என்று சொன்னார்கள்.

கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு அறிமுகமாவது ஒரு சடங்கு மட்டுமே; அவரை அவ்வப்போது கோவிலில், திருப்பலியில் சந்தித்தால் போதும்; அவர் பெயரைச் சொல்லி, ஒரு சில தான தர்மங்கள் செய்தால் போதும் என்று வாழ்வதுதான் பாதுகாப்பான, சராசரி கிறிஸ்தவ வாழ்வு என்று எண்ணியிருப்பவர்களுக்கு, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி, ஓர் அதிர்ச்சியைத் தர காத்திருக்கிறது. தனக்கு அறிமுகமானவர்கள், தன்னைப் பின்தொடர விழைபவர்கள், வெறும் பெயரளவில், சராசரி கிறிஸ்தவர்களாக வாழ்வது கடினம் என்பதை இயேசு அழுத்தந்திருத்தமாகக் கூறியுள்ளார்.

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 14 : 25-27

அக்காலத்தில், பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் இயேசுவோடு சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தனர். அவர் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து அவர்களிடம் கூறியது: “என்னிடம் வருபவர் தம் தந்தை, தாய், மனைவி, பிள்ளைகள், சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் ஆகியோரையும், ஏன், தம் உயிரையுமே என்னைவிட மேலாகக் கருதினால், அவர் என் சீடராயிருக்க முடியாது. தம் சிலுவையைச் சுமக்காமல் என் பின் வருபவர் எனக்குச் சீடராய் இருக்கமுடியாது”.  

இயேசு விடுத்த இச்சவாலை தன் 18வது வயதில் ஏற்று, துறவற வாழ்வைத் தொடர்ந்த ஆக்னெஸ் என்ற ஓர் இளம்பெண்ணை புனித அன்னை தெரேசாவாக உயர்த்தி பெருமைப்பட்டோம். தான் விரும்பித் தேர்ந்த துறவற சபையை விட்டு வெளியேறி, இயேசுவின் சவாலை இன்னும் முழுமையாக நிறைவேற்ற, 1950ம் ஆண்டு, தன் 40வது வயதில், மற்றொரு துறவு சபையை நிறுவி, துன்புறும் மக்களுக்கு தன் முழுமையான அர்ப்பணிப்பை 47 ஆண்டுகளாக வழங்கிய அன்னை தெரேசா, ஒரு புனிதராக உயர்த்தப்பட்டார். இரக்கத்தின் இறைதூதர், சேரிகளின் காவல்தூதர், சாக்கடையின் புனிதர் என்று, பல வழிகளில் புகழப்படும் அன்னை தெரேசா, 2016ம் ஆண்டு, இரக்கத்தின் சிறப்பு யூபிலி ஆண்டின் ஒரு சிகர நிகழ்வாக, இதே செப்டம்பர் 4, ஞாயிறன்று, திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் நிகழ்த்திய சிறப்புத் திருப்பலியில், புனிதராக உயர்த்தப்பட்டார். நாளை, செப்டம்பர் 5, திங்களன்று, புனித அன்னை தெரேசா அவர்கள் இறையடி சேர்ந்ததன் 25ம் ஆண்டு நிறைவு பெறுகிறது. பிறரன்பு மறைப்பணி சகோதரிகள் சபையை உருவாக்கி, வறுமைப்பிடியில் சிக்கித்தவிக்கும் பல்லாயிரம் மனிதர்களுக்கு, தன்னால் இயன்ற அளவு விடுதலை வழங்கிய இயேசுவின் உண்மையான சீடர், புனித அன்னை தெரேசாவிற்காக இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் வழியாக இயேசு விடுத்துள்ள சவாலை, புனித அன்னை தெரேசாவைப்போல், முழுமையாகப் பின்பற்றிய பல்லாயிரம் உன்னத உள்ளங்கள், தங்கள் உயிரையும் வழங்கியுள்ளனர். இவர்களில் ஒருவர், Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945). ஹிட்லர் காலத்தில், ஜெர்மனியில் வாழ்ந்த இவர், லூத்தரன் சபை பணியாளர், இறையியலாளர். ஹிட்லரின் அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிராகக் குரல் கொடுத்ததால், துன்பங்களைச் சந்தித்தவர். ஹிட்லரின் அநீதமான அடக்குமுறைக்கு உதவியாகச் செயல்பட்ட இராணுவத்தில் கட்டாயமாகச் சேரவேண்டியச் சூழலைத் தவிர்க்க, Bonhoeffer அவர்கள், அமேரிக்காவிற்குச் சென்றார். ஆனாலும், தன் சொந்த நாட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேறியது, அவர் மனதை உறுத்தியது. மீண்டும் ஜெர்மனிக்குத் திரும்பினார். அவர் ஜெர்மனிக்கு வந்தபின், அவரும் அவரது குடும்பத்தினரும் கைது செய்யப்பட்டனர். Flossenberg என்ற முகாமில், 1945ம் ஆண்டு, ஏப்ரல் 9ம் தேதி, Bonhoeffer அவர்கள், சித்ரவதைகளுக்கு உள்ளாக்கப்பட்டு, தூக்கிலிடப்பட்டார்.

இயேசுவின் சீடராக வாழ்வது குறித்து சிந்திக்கும் இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, Dietrich Bonhoeffer அவர்களைப் பற்றி குறிப்பாக எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பதற்குக் காரணம் உள்ளது. அவர் எழுதிய ஓர் அற்புதமான, புகழ் பெற்ற நூலின் பெயர் 'The Cost of Discipleship',  அதாவது, 'சீடராவதற்குத் தரவேண்டிய விலை'. Bonhoeffer அவர்கள், இந்நூலை அறிவுப்பூர்வமான விளக்கமாக எழுதவில்லை. இந்நூலில் விவரித்த சீடராக அவரே வாழ்ந்துகாட்டினார்.

இயேசுவின் சீடராக வாழ்வதென்பது, உலகத்தோடு ஒத்துப்போகும் வாழ்வு அல்ல. கும்பலோடு கும்பலாகக் கலந்து, கரைந்து போகும் வாழ்வு அல்ல. Bonhoeffer அவர்கள் விரும்பியிருந்தால், பல்லாயிரம் ஜெர்மன் நாட்டவர்களைப்போல், ஹிட்லரின் கொள்கைகளைக் கேள்வி கேட்காமல், ஏற்றுக்கொண்டிருக்கலாம். அல்லது, ஏற்றுக்கொண்டதுபோல் நடித்திருக்கலாம். 39 ஆண்டுகளே இவ்வுலகில் வாழ்ந்த Bonhoeffer அவர்கள், அமேரிக்கா சென்றபோது, அங்கேயேத் தங்கியிருந்துவிட்டு, போர் முடிந்தபின், ஜெர்மனி திரும்பியிருக்கலாம். இன்னும் பல ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்து, பல நூல்கள் எழுதி, புகழ் பெற்றிருக்கலாம்.

இதைச் செய்திருக்கலாம் அதைச் செய்திருக்கலாம் என்று இங்கு நாம் சிந்திப்பவை அனைத்தும், தன்னை மட்டும் காத்துக் கொள்வதற்கு, உலகம் சொல்லித்தரும் வழிகள். ஆனால், Bonhoeffer அவர்கள், உலகம் சொன்ன வழியைவிட, இயேசு சொன்ன வழியை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொன்ன வழியைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். இயேசுவின் சீடராய் வாழ்வதற்கான விலையைக் கொடுத்தார். தூக்கிலிடப்பட்டார்.

Bonhoeffer அவர்களை, சாவதற்கும் துணிந்த சீடராக வாழத்தூண்டிய இயேசுவும், அவர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், உலகத்தோடு ஒத்துப்போயிருந்தால், இளமையிலேயே இறந்திருக்கத் தேவையில்லை. இன்னும் பல ஆண்டுகள் மகிழ்வாய் வாழ்ந்திருந்து, இன்னும் பல்லாயிரம் புதுமைகள் ஆற்றி புகழடைந்திருக்கலாம்.

ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் புதுமை செய்தபோது, இயேசுவின் புகழ் பெரிதும் பரவியது. இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் ஆரம்ப வரிகள் சொல்வது போல், ‘பெருந்திரளான மக்கள்’ இயேசுவை எப்போதும் பின்பற்றிய வண்ணம் இருந்தனர். கூட்டம் கூட்டமாக, மக்களைத் தன் பக்கம் ஈர்த்து, தன் புகழை வளர்ப்பது மட்டுமே இயேசுவின் நோக்கமாய் இருந்திருந்தால், அந்த மக்கள் கூட்டத்தை எப்போதும் மகிழ்விக்கும் செய்திகளையேச் சொல்லி, புதுமைகள் செய்து, சுகமாக வாழ்ந்திருக்கலாம். ஒருவேளை, அவர்களது அரசராகக் கூட மாறியிருக்கலாம்.

இவ்வழிகளை இயேசு பின்பற்றியிருந்தால், இன்றைய அரசியல் தலைவர்களுக்கு அவர் ஓரு சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டாக இருந்திருப்பார். தலைமைத்துவம் என்றால் என்ன என்று, இன்றைய மேலாண்மை நிறுவனங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களுக்கு ஓர் இலக்கணமாக இயேசு இருந்திருப்பார். இயேசு, தான் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், மேலாண்மை பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தந்திருக்கிறார். “திட்டமிடத் தவறுகிறவர், தவறுவதற்குத் திட்டமிடுகிறார்.” (He who fails to plan, plans to fail) என்பது, மேலாண்மை நிறுவனங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் ஓர் அரிச்சுவடி.

வாழ்வில் திட்டமிடுவது மிகவும் அவசியம் என்பது எல்லாருக்கும் தெரிந்த ஒரு பாடம். நம் பேச்சு வழக்கிலும் இதையொத்த எண்ணங்களை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறோம்: “சும்மா எடுத்தோம், கவுத்தோம்னு எதையும் செஞ்சிடக்கூடாது; ஆர, அமர, யோசிச்சுத்தான் செய்யணும்” என்று. ஆர, அமர சிந்திப்பதைப் பற்றி இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் ஒரு முறை அல்ல, இரு முறை கூறியிருக்கிறார். அவர் கூறியுள்ளவற்றை நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து கேட்போம்:

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 14: 28-32

உங்களுள் யாராவது ஒருவர் கோபுரம் கட்ட விரும்பினால், முதலில் உட்கார்ந்து, அதைக் கட்டிமுடிக்க ஆகும் செலவைக் கணித்து, அதற்கான பொருள் வசதி தம்மிடம் இருக்கிறதா எனப் பார்க்கமாட்டாரா? இல்லாவிட்டால் அதற்கு அடித்தளமிட்ட பிறகு அவர் கட்டி முடிக்க இயலாமல் இருப்பதைப் பார்க்கும் யாவரும் ஏளனமாக, ‘இம்மனிதன் கட்டத் தொடங்கினான்; ஆனால் முடிக்க இயலவில்லை’ என்பார்களே! வேறு ஓர் அரசரோடு போர் தொடுக்கப்போகும் அரசர் ஒருவர், இருபதாயிரம் பேருடன் தமக்கு எதிராக வருபவரைப் பத்தாயிரம் பேரைக் கொண்டு எதிர்க்க முடியுமா என்று முதலில் உட்கார்ந்து சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்க மாட்டாரா? எதிர்க்க முடியாதெனில், அவர் தொலையில் இருக்கும்போதே தூதரை அனுப்பி, அமைதிக்கான வழியைத் தேட மாட்டாரா?

ஆர அமர சிந்தித்துச் செயலில் இறங்கவேண்டும் என்பதை, கோபுரம் கட்டுதல், போருக்குப் புறப்படுதல் என்ற எடுத்துக்காட்டுகளுடன் கூறும் இயேசு, திடீரென, சற்றும் எதிர்பாராத ஒரு கருத்தையும் கூறுகிறார். அதுதான், இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் அவர் கூறும் ஒரு திருப்பம். "அப்படியே, உங்களுள் தம் உடைமையை எல்லாம் விட்டு விடாத எவரும் என் சீடராய் இருக்க முடியாது." (லூக்கா 14: 33) இதை நாம் வாசிக்கும்போது, யாரோ நம் முகத்தில் தண்ணீர் தெளித்து, மயக்கத்திலிருந்து நம்மை எழுப்புவதைப்போல் உணர்கிறோம்.இயேசு பயன்படுத்திய 'அப்படியே' என்ற வார்த்தைதான் முகத்தில் தெளிக்கப்பட்ட தண்ணீர் போல் இருக்கிறது. 'அப்படியே' என்று இயேசு குறிப்பிடுவது எதை? அதற்கு முன் அவர் கூறிய அந்த இரு எடுத்துக்காட்டுகளை... இயேசு கூறுவது இதுதான்... எப்படி திட்டமிட்டு கோபுரம் எழுப்புவீர்களோ, எப்படி திட்டமிட்டு போருக்குச் செல்வீர்களோ, அப்படியே தம் உடைமையை எல்லாம் விட்டுவிடாத எவரும், என் சீடராய் இருக்க முடியாது என்பதுதான் இயேசு விடுக்கும் சவால். இந்த வாக்கியத்தை ஆழமாகச் சிந்தித்தால், இயேசு, இந்த வரிகளில் ஓர் உண்மைச் சீடனுக்குரிய சவாலை முன்வைக்கிறார் என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.கோபுரம் ஒன்றைக் கட்டுபவர், இரவும் பகலும் அதைப்பற்றியே எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருப்பார். ஒரு போருக்குச் செல்பவர், அதேபோல், அல்லது, அதைவிட இன்னும் தீவிரமாக எண்ணமும், துணிவும் கொண்டிருப்பார். இயேசுவைப் பின் தொடர்வதிலும் இரவும் பகலும் தீவிர எண்ணம் வேண்டும், துணிவு வேண்டும் என்பதைத்தான் அந்த 'அப்படியே' என்ற வார்த்தை சொல்கிறது. அந்த வார்த்தைதான் முகத்தில் தெளிக்கப்பட்ட தண்ணீரைப்போல் நம்மை விழித்தெழச் செய்கிறது.

ஒரு சீடராக இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றுவதென்பது, ஏதோ ஓரிரவில் தோன்றி மறையும் அழகான, இரம்மியமான கனவு அல்ல. மாறாக, வாழ்நாள் முழவதும், இரவும், பகலும், நம் சிந்தனை, சொல், செயல் இவற்றை நிறைக்கவேண்டிய ஒரு தாகம் என்பதைத்தான், இயேசு, இவ்வரிகளில் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

பணத்திற்காக, புகழ், பெருமைகளுக்காக, ஏதோ ஒன்றைச் சாதிக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக, தூக்கம் மறந்து, உணவை மறந்து, குடும்பத்தை மறந்து, உழைக்கும் பலரைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். தாங்கள் ஆரம்பித்ததை வெற்றிகரமாக முடிக்கவேண்டும் என்பதில் அவர்கள் கொண்டுள்ள தீவிரத்தை, தன் சீடர்கள் கொண்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்று இயேசு எதிர்பார்க்கிறார்.

செப்டம்பர் 8ம் தேதி, வருகிற வியாழன், அன்னை மரியாவின் பிறந்தநாள். இது, ஆரோக்கிய அன்னை திருநாளாக, குறிப்பாக, தமிழகத்தில், வேளாங்கண்ணி திருத்தலத்திலும், இன்னும், ஆரோக்கிய அன்னையின் பெயரைத் தாங்கிய பல திருத்தலங்களிலும் பெரு விழாவாகச் சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறது. இத்திருநாளையொட்டி வரும் இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று நாம் கேட்ட நற்செய்தி, இயேசுவின் சீடர்களாக வாழ்வதில் உள்ள சவாலைகளை முன்வைத்துள்ளது. இதை நாம் ஓர் அருள்நிறைந்த தருணமாகக் கருதலாம். இயேசுவின் சீடர்களிலேயே முதன்மை இடம் பெறுபவர், அன்னை மரியா. அந்த அன்னையின் பாதங்களில் அமர்ந்து, இயேசுவின் உண்மைச் சீடராக எவ்வாறு வாழ்வது என்ற பாடங்களைப் பயில்வோம்.

இறுதியாக ஓர் எண்ணம்... இந்த எண்ணம் நமக்குச் சவாலாக அமையலாம். இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் என்று இன்று நாம் பகிர்ந்த சிந்தனைகள் எல்லாம், அருள்பணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் துறவறத்தாருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள சிந்தனைகள் என்று எண்ணி, தப்பித்துக் கொள்ளமுடியாது. இயேசு, இந்த வார்த்தைகளை, தன் சீடர்களுடன் தனித்து இருக்கும்போது சொல்லவில்லை... மாறாக, தன்னைப் பின்தொடர்ந்த ‘பெருந்திரளான மக்களை’ நோக்கி, அதாவது, நம் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் நோக்கிச் சொல்கிறார். தியாகங்களுக்குத் தயாராக இல்லாத உள்ளங்கள், அதிலும் குறிப்பாக, இரவும் பகலும் தீர ஆய்வு செய்து, தியாகம் செய்யத் துணியாத உள்ளங்கள், தன்னைப் பின்தொடர்வது இயலாது என்று கூறும் இயேசுவுக்கு நமது பதில் என்ன?
