Prepare ye the Way of the Lord"The old American Dream . . . was the dream of men and women content to accumulate their modest fortunes a little at a time, year by year by year. The new dream was the dream of instant wealth, won in a twinkling by audacity and good luck. [This] golden dream . . . became a prominent part of the American psyche only after Sutter's Mill."
This is a quote from The Age of Gold: The California Gold Rush and the New American Dream, written by Henry William Brands. The golden dream began on December 5, 1848. On that day, in a message before the U.S. Congress, US President James K. Polk confirmed that large amounts of gold had been discovered in California. This rush for gold resulted in thousands dying even without seeing gold. This rush was also the reason for the massacre of thousands of native Americans. The rush for gold, the dream of instant wealth, drives large number of people to the shores of the U.S. even today.
Two fables related to gold come to my mind and both have also been stories of avarice – Midas Touch and the Goose that laid Golden Eggs. The lessons from these fables have very little impact on the commercial world which is always on the run, rushing to make hay whether the sun shines or not. Here is a news item which drew my attention in the recent past.

Meaning of season lost by rushing Christmas celebration, bishop says

SALT LAKE CITY (CNS) -- Salt Lake City Bishop John C. Wester has urged Catholics to hold off celebrating the Christmas season until it officially begins on the church calendar Dec. 24.
In his first pastoral letter as Salt Lake City's bishop, he urged the state's Catholics to keep true to the spirit of Advent -- a season of preparation which he said has been "neglected in many places" and often "overshadowed by the holiday season."
In the letter, Bishop Wester described the Christmas holiday season as one where many "rush from one thing to the next," stirring momentum "to get all the decorations up, celebrate the event and quickly dismantle all the decorations" to move to the next event.

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist also speaks of ‘rushing’… “The kingdom of heaven is AT HAND” is his warning. But his plea for making haste is for repenting and ‘straightening things out’ and not for grabbing and accumulating as suggested by the commercial world.
Given the least chance, the commercial world would turn everything into a commodity. I would like to share with you three world events which have been ‘commercialised’. These are simply random samples. When the Berlin wall came down in 1989, pieces of that wall were sold as souvenirs. I would not be surprised if counterfeit pieces of Berlin Wall were sold! There have also been rumours of how the debris of World Trade Centre, New York (Sep.11, 2001) were made into souvenirs and SOLD. When Bl.Mary MacKillop was made the first Saint of Australia, there were very many news items as to who owned the copyright for the image of the new Saint. Here is one of those news items that appeared before the canonisation:

As Bradman’s name was used to sell cookies in India, people in the commercial world were vying with one another to sell the name of St Mary Mackillop. Berlin wall, WTC debris, St Mary Mackillop… nothing is left out of the purview of the commercial world.
Let us come back to Bishop Wester of Salt Lake City. For the commercial world, what the Bishop said would be pretty ‘heretical’. If the commercial world gets a chance, they would kidnap the Bishop and keep him under check until Christmas sales is over. But, they would not go to that extent since they know how to drown out voices like that of Bishop Wester with their sales messages. In the Gospel today, we meet John the Baptist who also challenged the easy going lifestyle of the religious leaders and Herod. Although he was only ‘a voice in the wilderness’, he was quite loud and clear. Hence he needed to be silenced before he became a greater threat. This was achieved sooner than later.
The commercial world proposes very different preparations for Christmas than the ones proposed by Bishop Wester or John the Baptist. We need to turn away from these commercial messages to the Gospel message that calls for mending our ways: A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” (Mt. 3:3) Once the path is set right, then decorations can start… not the other way around, as the commercial world tells us.
My closing thoughts are about the ‘fantastic’ dream of Prophet Isaiah given in the first reading for this Sunday. This passage is extremely good. I don’t think I shall spoil the beauty of this passage by trying to ‘explain’ or ‘interpret’ this. I would like to make one comment, though. I used the label ‘fantastic’ for this dream since it sounds like a lovely fantasy, meaning, that this CANNOT happen. But, on second thought, why not? So many dreams proposed by the commercial world are also fantastic. If we can believe in those fantasies, why not give a fair chance to the ‘fantasy’ of Isaiah?

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD -
and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth...
The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

Last week Isaiah gave us the dream of swords being turned into ploughshares. This week we are given another dream to long for. Let good dreams flow in and out of human beings!

"சிறுகச் சிறுக சேகரித்து வாழ்வதென்பது அமெரிக்காவில் குடியேறியவர்களின் ஆரம்பக் கனவாக இருந்தது. ஆனால், அந்த அமெரிக்கக் கனவு ஒரு நாளில் மாறியது. அனைவரும் விரைவில் செல்வம் சேர்க்க விழைந்தனர். 'விரைவில் செல்வம்' என்பதே அமெரிக்காவில் குடியேறியவர்களின் தாரக மந்திரம் ஆனது."
அமெரிக்க வரலாற்றை (The Age Of Gold: The California Gold Rush And the New American Dream) எழுதியுள்ள Henry William Brands இவ்வாறு கூறியுள்ளார். 'விரைவில் செல்வம்' என்ற இந்த அமெரிக்கக் கனவு ஆரம்பமான நாள் 1848ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 5ம் தேதி. அன்று, கலிபோர்னியாவில் பெருமளவு தங்கம் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டதாக அமெரிக்க அரசுத்தலைவர் ஜேம்ஸ் போக் (James K.Polk) அறிவித்தார்.
அவரது அறிக்கை கலிபோர்னியா பகுதிக்குக் கோடிக்கணக்கான மக்களை இழுத்தது. தங்க வேட்டை ஆரம்பமானது. தங்கம் மட்டும் வேட்டையாடப்படவில்லை. மக்களின் உயிர்களும் வேட்டையாடப்பட்டன. முக்கியமாக, அப்பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்த அமெரிக்க பழங்குடியினரின் உயிர்கள் கொடூரமாக வேட்டையாடப்பட்டன.
1848க்குப் பின் அமெரிக்காவின் ஆரம்பக் கனவு மட்டுமல்ல, அந்நாட்டின் வரலாறே தலை கீழாக மாறியது. இன்றும் அமெரிக்காவைத் தேடிப் போகும் கோடிக்கணக்கானவர்களின் கனவு 'விரைவில் செல்வம்' என்பது தானே?
ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ஒரு பொன் முட்டையிட்டு வந்த வாத்தின் வயிற்றைக் கிழித்து, ஒரே நாளில் அத்தனை முட்டைகளையும் எடுக்க விழைந்தவரின் பரிதாபக் கதை நமக்கு இன்னும் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தந்ததாகத் தெரியவில்லை.
ஞாயிறு சிந்தனை
1989ம் ஆண்டு பெர்லின் சுவர் இடிக்கப்பட்டு இரு ஜெர்மனி நாடுகள் இணைந்தன. மக்களின் முயற்சியால் ஏற்பட்ட ஒரு பெரும் சமுதாய புரட்சி இது என்று வரலாறு சொன்னது. இடிக்கப்பட்ட அந்தச் சுவர் சிறு சிறு துண்டுகளாக்கப்பட்டு, விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன. பெர்லின் சுவர் என்று சொல்லி, போலித் துண்டுகளும் விற்கப் பட்டன.
2001ம் ஆண்டு நியூயார்க்கில் இரு வர்த்தகக் கோபுரங்கள் வன்முறைத் தாக்குதலால் இடிந்து விழுந்தன. உலக வரலாற்றைக் காயப்படுத்திய ஒரு நிகழ்வு இது என்று கூறப்பட்டது. இந்த இடிபாடுகளும் விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன.
இந்த ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் மாதம் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் முதல் புனிதராக மேரி மெக்கில்லாப் (St.Mary MacKillop) உயர்த்தப்பட்டார். அந்தப் புனிதரின் உருவத்தை படங்களாக, அணிகலன்களாக மாற்றி விற்பதில் ஆஸ்திரேலிய அரசுக்கும் வியாபாரிகளுக்கும் சச்சரவு ஏற்பட்டது. வத்திக்கான் இந்தப் பிரச்சனையில் தலையிட்டுத் தீர்க்க வேண்டுமென்று வியாபாரிகள் கேட்டுக் கொண்டனர்.
சமுதாயப் புரட்சி, வன்முறைத் தாக்குதல், புனிதராகும் திருச்சடங்கு என்று உலகில் எது நடந்தாலும் அனைத்தையும் வியாபாரப் பொருட்களாக்கும் வழிமுறைகள் பெருகி வருவது வேதனையைத் தருகிறது.
நமது சமய விழாக்கள் அனைத்தும் வியாபார மயமாகி வருகின்றன. இந்த வியாபார, விளம்பர உலகம் சொல்லும் வழிகளில்தான் நாம் சிந்திக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது. ஏனெனில், இவைகளே அதிக நேரங்கள், அதிக சப்தத்தோடு ஒலிக்கும் போதனைகளாக மாறிவருகின்றன. இந்த போதனைகள் எல்லாம் நம் வாழ்வை இதமாகக் கொண்டு செல்லும் வழிகள். எந்த வித சவாலையும் முன் வைக்காமல், நம்மைக் கனவில் மிதக்க வைக்கும் வழிகள்.
இந்த வழிகளைக் காட்டுவதற்கும் பல நாயகர்களை, நம் முன் காட்டுகின்றது இந்த வியாபார உலகம். இந்தியாவில் இந்த நாயகர்களில் பலருக்குக் கோவில்கள் கட்டும் அளவிற்கு இவர்கள் மக்கள் மனங்களில் இடம் பிடித்து, அங்கு இருக்க வேண்டிய இறைவனை வெளியேற்றுவது பெரும் வேதனையான போக்கு. இந்த வியாபார உலகின் போதனைகளுக்கு, இந்த உலகம் நமக்கு முன் நிறுத்தும் நாயகர்களுக்கு ஒரு மாற்றாக இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமும் நற்செய்தியும் நமக்குப் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றன. வியாபார உலகத்தின் கூச்சல்களை எல்லாம் மீறி இந்த வார்த்தைகள் நம் மனதை சென்றடைய வேண்டும். முயல்வோமா?
"அவசரப்பட்டு கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை ஆரம்பிக்காதீர்கள், தயவு செய்து டிசம்பர் 24 இரவு வரை காத்திருங்கள்" என்று அமெரிக்க ஆயர் ஒருவர் இம்மாதம் முதல் தேதி தன் மக்களுக்கு வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்துள்ளார். அமெரிக்காவில் Salt Lake City என்ற மறைமாவட்டத்தின் ஆயர் John C.Wester அனுப்பியுள்ள ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் இது.
அவர் இப்படி சொல்வதற்குக் காரணம் என்ன? அமெரிக்காவில் நவம்பர் இறுதி வியாழனன்று நன்றியறிதல் நாள் கொண்டாடப்படும். இறைவன் அளித்த நல்ல அறுவடைக்கு நன்றி சொல்லும் ஒரு விழாவாக ஆரம்பித்த இந்த நாளை, வியாபார உலகம் தனக்கே உரித்தான விடுமுறை கொண்டாட்டமாக மாற்றி விட்டது. தற்போது இந்த நன்றியறிதல் நாள் எந்த வித சமய உணர்வும் இல்லாமல் கொண்டாடப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இந்த விழா முடிந்த கையோடு, நவம்பர் இறுதியிலிருந்து, கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்கள் ஆரம்பமாகிவிட்டன. விளம்பர, வியாபார உலகம் ஆரம்பித்து வைத்துள்ள இந்த கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை ஆடம்பரமாக, ஆர்ப்பாட்டமாக ஒரு மாத அளவு கொண்டாடி விட்டால், உண்மையான கிறிஸ்மஸ் டிசம்பர் 24 இரவு வரும்போது நாம் அனைவரும் களைத்துப் போய் விடுவோம் என்று ஆயர் Wester எச்சரிக்கை தருகிறார்.
களைத்து மட்டும் போய்விட மாட்டோம் அன்பர்களே, கலைந்தும் போய்விடுவோம். ஒவ்வொரு திருநாளின் உட்பொருளை விட்டுக் கலைந்து, வேறு வழிகளில் நம் மனங்கள் சிந்திக்கின்றன. கிறிஸ்மஸின் உண்மைப் பொருளை உணர்வதற்கு நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு நல்ல காலம் இந்தத் திருவருகைக் காலம். வீட்டு அலங்காரம், புத்தாடைகள், வண்ண விளக்குடன் கூடிய விண்மீன்கள், கிறிஸ்மஸ் மரம், பரிசுகள் என்று வியாபார உலகம் காட்டும் வழியில் இந்த வருகைக் காலத்தை நாம் இந்நேரம் ஆரம்பித்திருந்தால், அவைகளைக் கொஞ்சம் நிறுத்தி விட்டு, உண்மையான கிறிஸ்மஸின் பொருளை உணர்வதற்கு இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள் நம்மை அழைக்கின்றன.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானை நாம் சந்திக்கிறோம். அவர் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லியிருக்கும் வார்த்தைகள் அனைத்தும் உண்மை. அப்பட்டமான உண்மை. எந்தவித இனிப்பும் கலக்காத கசப்பான உண்மை. கசப்பான மருந்து. வியாபார உலகம் உருவாக்கும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் வாழ்த்து அட்டைகளில் இந்த வார்த்தைகள் இடம் பெற முடியுமா என்று சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்தேன். ஹூஹூம் வாய்ப்பே இல்லை. இது போன்ற உண்மைகளை மறைத்து, இந்த உண்மைகளைச் சொல்பவர்களை மறைத்து, மற்ற கனவு நாயகர்களை, அவர்கள் சொல்லும் விளம்பர வரிகளை நம் மனங்களில் பதிய வைப்பது தானே இந்த உலகின் விருப்பம்.
“கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை இவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் ஆம்பிக்காதீர்கள்” என்று சொன்ன ஆயர் Westerஐ வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால், வியாபார உலகம் கடத்திக் கொண்டு போய் கிறிஸ்மஸ் முடியும் வரை கண் காணாத இடத்தில் வைத்து விடும். அதேபோல் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானை யூத மதத் தலைவர்களும், உரோமைய அரசும் இந்த உலகை விட்டே அனுப்பத் துடித்தார்கள். விரைவில் அனுப்பியும் விட்டார்கள். உண்மையைச் சொல்லும் எந்த இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் ஊரில் நல்ல பெயர் இருந்ததில்லையே!
ஆனால், உண்மையைச் சொல்லி, உலகில் நன்மையை வளர்க்கும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள் நமது உலகிற்கு தேவை. இறைவனின் பக்கம் நம்மை வழி நடத்தும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள், இறை பணியாளர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்களாய் இருப்பார்கள் அவர்கள் உலகில் இருந்தால் இவ்வுலகம் எப்படி அழகாக மாறும் என்பவைகளை இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா ஒரு அழகியக் கனவாகத் தந்திருக்கிறார் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில். இந்த வரிகளுக்கு விளக்கமே தேவையில்லை. எசாயாவின் இந்தக் கனவு இன்று நாம் வாழும் உலகில் நடைமுறையாக வேண்டும் என்ற ஏக்கத்தோடு இந்த வரிகளைக் கேட்போம்.
இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா 11: 1-9
ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி அவர்மேல் தங்கியிருக்கும்: ஞானம், மெய்யுணர்வு, அறிவுரைத்திறன், ஆற்றல், நுண்மதி, ஆண்டவரைப்பற்றிய அச்ச உணர்வு-இவற்றை அந்த ஆவி அவருக்கு அருளும். அவரும் ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்பதில் மகிழ்ந்திருப்பார். கண் கண்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் நீதி வழங்கார்: காதால் கேட்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் தீர்ப்புச் செய்யார்: நேர்மையோடு ஏழைகளுக்கு நீதி வழங்குவார்: நடுநிலையோடு நாட்டின் எளியோரது வழக்கை விசாரிப்பார்...
இத்தகைய நேரியவர்கள் உள்ள நாட்டில் என்ன நடக்கும் என்பதையும் ஓர் அழகியக் கனவாகக் கூறுகிறார் இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா:
அந்நாளில், ஒநாய் செம்மறியாட்டுக் குட்டியோடு தங்கியிருக்கும்: கன்றும், சிங்கக்குட்டியும், கொழுத்த காளையும் கூடி வாழும்: பச்சிளம் குழந்தை அவற்றை நடத்திச் செல்லும். பசுவும் கரடியும் ஒன்றாய் மேயும்: அவற்றின் குட்டிகள் சேர்ந்து படுத்துக்கிடக்கும்: சிங்கம் மாட்டைப் போல் வைக்கோல் தின்னும்: பால் குடிக்கும் குழந்தை விரியன் பாம்பின் வளையில் விளையாடும்: பால்குடி மறந்த பிள்ளை கட்டுவிரியன் வளையினுள் தன் கையை விடும். என் திருமலை முழுவதிலும் தீமை செய்வார் எவருமில்லை: கேடு விளைப்பார் யாருமில்லை: ஏனெனில், கடல் தண்ணீரால் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது போல, மண்ணுலகம் ஆண்டவராம் என்னைப் பற்றிய அறிவால் நிறைந்திருக்கும்.
அன்புள்ளங்களே, வியாபார உலகம், விளம்பர உலகம் காட்டும் பல கனவுகளை, நமது திரைப்படங்களில் நாயகர்கள் சொல்லும் வசனங்களை, செய்யும் சாகசங்களைக் கண்டு இவை உண்மையாகக் கூடாதா என்று எங்கும் நாம், இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயாவின் கனவையும் ஏன் அப்படி நினைத்து ஏங்கக் கூடாது? ஏங்குவோம். உலகில் நல்லவைகள் அபரிமிதமாக நடக்க வேண்டும் என்று ஏங்குவோம்.
