But this softer and more beautiful world turned into a tragic mess in most countries in Asia exactly one day after Christmas on December 26, 2004. It was six years back when Christmas came on a Saturday and the next day December 26 was a Sunday, the Feast of the Holy Family, exactly as it is this year. So, naturally our minds go back to this painful tragedy that challenged our faith and our spirit of Christmas. The tsunami that occurred on December 26th, the Feast of the Holy Family, left thousands and thousands of families completely or partially uprooted.
If a family was uprooted fully, it looked like a blessing, since all the members of the family were gone and no painful memories lingered. But there were thousands of other families where the tsunami had taken away some members while the rest were left in agony and despair. On the Feast of the Holy Family why should this happen? Is there anything soft or beautiful about the Christmas Season of 2004? Those were the questions left with us.
Nothing soft and nothing beautiful about the tsunami in 2004 one would tend to say. But, wait… In the days and months and even years that followed, many soft and beautiful things did happen. They are still happening. Among the various incidents that I have read, one incident is etched deep in my mind and heart – the incident about Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. Here is an extract from the Hindu:
SEA OF LOVE: The tsunami-affected couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam, with their adopted children.
DINDIGUL : Even as tsunami `swallowed' all their three children and washed away their happiness once and for all, it could not wipe out humanism and confidence from the minds of the couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. The couple, suffering from irrevocable loss, adopted 16 child survivors of tsunami aged between three and 14 years.
Mr. Parameswaran's emotion-soaked outpouring of reactions moved a huge gathering. "It happened on my birthday," said Mr. Parameswaran. “First, my last son saw a giant wave, higher than many trees. I alerted my son to run. I could see my kid's two little legs moving at pace. In a few seconds, I could see thousands of bodies floating in water. I lost all my three children, my father and mother and 10 of my relatives from Karnataka”, he recalled.
"We have crores of rupees, but did not have a piece of cloth to cover my children's bodies before burial. With confidence instilled by my wife, we went to a fishermen hamlet near coastline the next day where many destitute children were roaming without parents. I have a bungalow without children. They have no parents and house. We brought four children home for providing shelter. Later, the number rose to 16," he said.

The tsunami plucked away three children of Parameswaran and Sudamani. But at the same time, it had planted many more children in their family. When we think of the Holy Family, we are also painfully aware that the incidents that happened around this family were not holy in any sense. They were asked to run for their life over night. The children in Bethlehem were massacred. Still, the Holy Family survived and this family opened its heart to include the whole human family. In this sense, we can say with some assurance: "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."
Many great thinkers are of the opinion that Christmas is not only restricted to December 25th but that it can be kept alive all through the year. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States said: "Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be generous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

‘Santa’s gift’ cheers tsunami couple
Nagapattinam, Dec. 22: This Christmas is special for Mr Parameswaran whose house now echoes with the voices of the 18 children he adopted after losing all three of his own children to the tsunami which struck the coast on December 26, 2004. Mr Parameswaran, who had found solace in these children either orphaned by the tsunami or with just one parent left after the disaster, has now been blessed with a child of his own.
Three-month-old Shamiah meaning “God’s answer to prayers”, is the best gift by Santa, say Mr Parameswaran and his wife Choodamani. The couple said that the birth of their child was met with a mixture of joy and worry by the rest of the children. “Some of the children wanted a girl, others a boy. When the baby was born our youngest daughter, two-year-old Priya came and asked me whether she will lose her room because of the baby. Apparently, she got this idea from her brothers who were teasing her.
We assured her that she would not. This child is the luckiest in the world. He has 18 loving brothers and sisters,” Mr Parameswaran, an employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation said. For the couple, the birth of Shamaiah has made their family complete. Kept busy in raising a battalion of 18 children, Ms Choodamani said it was the joy which these children brought them that had now given them Shamiah. “The children filled our empty home with their laughter and cries. Now the arrival of this child has washed away the wounds left by the disaster. There is no time even to think of the past,” she said. The baby has not changed the routine of the other children. “Half yearly exams are going on now. So we are not allowed to go near the baby as much as we want to. Once the Christmas holidays start then we will have more time to play with him,” said twelve-year-old Juniya.

என் மனம் ஆறு ஆண்டுகள் பின்னோக்கிச் செல்கிறது. 2004ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 25 சனிக் கிழமையன்று வந்தது. அதற்கடுத்த நாள் டிசம்பர் 26 திருக்குடும்பத் திருவிழா ஞாயிறு வந்தது. இந்த ஆண்டும் அதேபோல், டிசம்பர் 25 சனிக்கிழமை. 26 ஞாயிறு - திருக்குடும்பத் திருவிழா. இத்துடன் இந்த ஒப்புமைகள் முடிய வேண்டும். ஏனெனில் 2004ம் ஆண்டு திருக்குடும்பத் திருவிழாவன்று நடந்தது இனி நம் வாழ்வில் எப்போதும் நடக்கக் கூடாது. அவ்வாண்டு கிறிஸ்மஸ் மந்திரக் கோலாகச் செயல்படவில்லை. உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், சிறப்பாக, ஆசிய நாடுகள் பலவற்றில் 2004ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 26 எதையும், மென்மையாக, அழகாக விட்டுச் செல்லவில்லை.

வெளிவந்த செய்திகளில் என் மனதில் ஆழமாய்ப் பதிந்த ஒரு செய்தி... நாகப்பட்டினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பரமேஸ்வரன் சூடாமணி தம்பதியரைப் பற்றிய செய்தி. இவர்களைப் பற்றி ஏற்கனவே சென்ற ஆண்டு ஒரு முறை விவிலியத் தேடலில் கூறியுள்ளேன். மீண்டும் நினைவு படுத்துகிறேன்.
சுனாமியில் தன் குழந்தைகள் மூவரையும் சேர்த்து தன் குடும்பத்தில் பத்து பேரை இழந்தவர்கள் பரமேஸ்வரன், சூடாமணி தம்பதியர். டிசம்பர் 26 பரமேஸ்வரனின் பிறந்த நாள். அதைக் கொண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது வந்த சுனாமி அவரது மூன்று குழந்தைகளையும் மற்ற உறவினர்களையும் கடலுக்கு இரையாக்கியது. குழந்தைகளை இழந்த பரமேஸ்வரன் - சூடாமணி தம்பதியர் நம்பிக்கை இழந்து வெறுப்பைச் சுமந்து கொண்டு போகவில்லை. மாறாக, ஒரு புதுமையை அவர்கள் ஆரம்பித்தனர். அந்த சுனாமியால் பெற்றோரை இழந்து தவித்த 16 அனாதை குழந்தைகளைத் தத்தெடுத்து வளர்த்து வருகின்றனர்.
சுனாமி அவர்கள் குடும்பத்தை அழித்தாலும், அவர்களது மனித நேயத்தை அழித்துவிடவில்லை. அந்த குழந்தைகளின் மதம், இனம், இவைகளையெல்லாம் கடந்து மனித நேயம் என்ற அடிப்படையில் மட்டுமே குழந்தைகளைத் தத்தெடுத்தார்கள். 3 வயது முதல் 16 வயது வரை உள்ள 16 பேரைத் தத்தெடுத்து வளர்த்து வருகின்றனர். மனித குலத்தின் மேல் அவர்களுடைய விசுவாசத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினர். மனித குலத்தின் மேல் நமக்குள்ள விசுவாசத்தை பரமேஸ்வரன் - சூடாமணி தம்பதியர் வளர்த்திருக்கின்றனர்.
இந்தத் தம்பதியரின் மூன்று குழந்தைகளை சுனாமி வேரோடு பறித்துச் சென்றது. ஆனால், இன்று அதே தம்பதியர் குடும்பத்தில் 16 இளந்தளிர்கள் நடப்பட்டு வளர்ந்து வருகிறார்கள். ஒரு கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்க்கும் போது, இதுவும் ஒரு திருக்குடும்பம் தானே!
இயேசு, மரியா, யோசேப்பு என்ற திருக்குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றி இப்போது பெருமையாக, புனிதமாக நாம் கொண்டாடி வருகிறோம். ஆனால், அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்த நேரத்தில் அக்குடும்பத்தைச் சுற்றி நிகழ்ந்தது எதுவும் புனிதமாக, பெருமை தருவதாக இல்லையே. பச்சிளம் குழந்தை இயேசு பிறந்ததும் இரவோடிரவாக அவர்கள் வேறொரு நாட்டிற்கு அகதிகளாய் ஓட வேண்டியிருந்தது. இக்குழந்தையின் உயிரைப் பலி வாங்க வந்த ஏரோதின் அடியாட்கள் பல நூறு குழந்தைகளின் உயிர்களைப் பலி வாங்கினர். அகதிகள், குழந்தைகள் கொலை இன்றும் ஒரு தொடர்கதை தானே. இதில் புனிதம், பெருமை எங்கே உள்ளன?
சுனாமி தந்த காயங்களை, பேரலையாய் வந்து நம் நம்பிக்கையை துடைத்துச் சென்ற அந்த ஆழிப் பேரலையை மாற்றி, அந்த அழிவு நாளை நம்பிக்கைத் தரும் நாளாக மாற்றியது பரமேஸ்வரனும், சூடாமணியும். அதேபோல், தங்களைச் சுற்றி நடந்த அத்தனை அவலங்களையும் மீறி புனிதத்தையும் பெருமையையும் நிலை நாட்டிய மரியா, யோசேப்பு, குழந்தை இயேசு இவர்களால் தான் இந்தக் குடும்பத்தை இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். மலை போல, அலை போல துயர் வந்தாலும், மனித குலத்தில் இன்னும் விசுவாசம் தழைத்தோங்க சில நூறு மனிதர்கள் இருப்பதாலேயே, இன்னும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் காலம் நம் மத்தியில் ஒரு மந்திரக் கோலாக வீசப்படுகிறது. இந்த உலகம் இன்னும் மென்மையாய், அழகாய் மாறுகிறது.
