II Sunday of Advent

"The old American Dream . . . was the dream of men and women content to accumulate their modest fortunes a little at a time, year by year by year. The new dream was the dream of instant wealth, won in a twinkling by audacity and good luck. [This] golden dream . . . became a prominent part of the American psyche only after Sutter's Mill."

This is a quote from The Age of Gold: The California Gold Rush and the New American Dream, written by Henry William Brands. The golden dream began on December 5, 1848. On that day, in a message before the U.S. Congress, US President James K. Polk confirmed that large amounts of gold had been discovered in California. This rush for gold, resulted in thousands dying, even without seeing gold. This rush was also the reason for the massacre of thousands of native Americans. The rush for gold, the dream of instant wealth, drives large number of people to the shores of the U.S. even today.

Two fables related to gold come to my mind and both have also been stories of avarice and tragedy – Midas Touch and the Goose that laid Golden Eggs. The lessons from these fables have very little impact on the commercial world, which is always on the run, rushing to make hay, whether the sun shines or not. Unfortunately, the spirit of the commercial world has seeped into our religious spehere too.  Here is a news item that serves as a warning as to how our Christmas season has been hi-jacked by the market forces:

SALT LAKE CITY (CNS) -- Salt Lake City Bishop John C. Wester (Now, the Archbishop of of Santa Fe) has urged Catholics to hold off celebrating the Christmas season until it officially begins on the church calendar Dec. 24.

In his first pastoral letter as Salt Lake City's bishop, he urged the state's Catholics to keep true to the spirit of Advent -- a season of preparation which he said has been "neglected in many places" and often "overshadowed by the holiday season."

In the letter, Bishop Wester described the Christmas holiday season as one where many "rush from one thing to the next," stirring momentum "to get all the decorations up, celebrate the event and quickly dismantle all the decorations" to move to the next event.

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist also speaks of ‘rushing’… “The kingdom of heaven is AT HAND” is his warning. But his plea for making haste is for repenting and ‘straightening things out’ and not for grabbing and accumulating as suggested by the commercial world.

Given the least chance, the commercial world would turn everything into a commodity. I would like to share with you three world events which have been ‘commercialised’. These are simply random samples:

On November 9, this year we commemorated the 30^th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. It was eulogised as a social revolution brought about by the will power of the people of Germany. But, on the day (1989, Nov. 9), when people from East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR) crossed over to West Germany (FRG), the supermarkets on the western side of the wall were kept open throughout the night. People from GDR spent the night on a buying spree. Within a few months, the ‘fallen wall’ became more of a commercial venture. Pieces of that wall were sold as souvenirs. I would not be surprised if counterfeit pieces of Berlin Wall were sold!

There have also been rumours of how the debris of World Trade Centre, New York (Sep.11, 2001) were made into souvenirs and SOLD. When Bl.Mary MacKillop was made the first Saint of Australia (17 October 2010), there were very many news items as to who owned the copyright for the image of the new Saint.

Berlin wall, WTC debris, St Mary Mackillop… nothing is left out of the purview of the commercial world. The commercial world seems to dominate religious festivals with its own ritual and price-tag for ‘celebration’. Of all the religious festivals, Christmas seems to suffer the most with an overload of ‘celebration’.

Advent is a grace-filled time to step aside from the mad rush of ‘celebration’ to a time of ‘expectation’. But, what do we expect in this season? We know that God can come in various ways – least expected ways – into our lives. Sometimes, God can not only surprise us, but also can shock us by the way he enters our lives in the most unexpected ways. Here is a story (an event?) that is posted in the social media about how an expected guest can come in unexpected ways. This story is reported in different versions in YouTube and I have added my own variations to this story:

The city parish church was filling with people for the Sunday Mass. Since there was an announcement that the new parish priest was arriving that Sunday, the church was overflowing. A homeless person sat outside the church and greeted everyone as they passed by. No one reciprocated his greeting, except one. The hat he had placed in front of him was empty.

When it was time for the Mass, the homeless person entered the church and proceeded to the front. An usher told him to go back to the last bench. The homeless person obliged with a smile. Then a member of the parish council went to the altar and said: “Dear friends, all of us are eagerly awaiting to meet the new parish priest. I have not seen him myself. He sent me a message just a few minutes back saying that he has already arrived and is among us.”

When the member of the parish council said this, people turned to the entrance of the church and in eager anticipation began clapping. The homeless person who was sitting in the last bench stood up and began walking towards the altar. The applause died out and people began to murmur.

The homeless person went up to the altar and introduced himself as the new parish priest. He then recounted his experience that morning. Many bowed their heads in shame and some of them wept. The pastor said: “I wish all of us go home and reflect on what happened here this morning. See you next week!”  

This is a lovely parable on Advent Season. God comes to us in the most unexpected form and, perhaps, God is already present among us. But, we, with our pre-conceived expectations can miss God.

Let us come back to Bishop Wester of Salt Lake City. For the commercial world, what the Bishop said would be pretty ‘heretical’. If the commercial world got a chance, they would have kidnapped the Bishop and kept him under check until Christmas sales was over.  But, they would not have gone to that extent since they knew how to drown out voices like that of Bishop Wester with their sales messages.

In the Gospel today, we meet John the Baptist who also challenged the easy going lifestyle of the religious leaders and Herod. Although he was only ‘a voice in the wilderness’, he was quite loud and clear. Hence he needed to be silenced before he became a greater threat. This was achieved sooner than later.

The commercial world proposes very different preparations for Christmas than the ones proposed by Bishop Wester or John the Baptist. We need to turn away from these commercial messages to the Gospel message that calls for mending our ways: A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” (Mt. 3:3) Once the path is set right, then decorations can start… not the other way around, as the commercial world tells us.

My closing thoughts are about the ‘fantastic’ dream of Prophet Isaiah given in the first reading for this Sunday (Isaiah 11:1-10). This passage is extremely good. I don’t think I shall spoil the beauty of this passage by trying to ‘explain’ or ‘interpret’ this. I would like to make one comment, though. I used the label ‘fantastic’ for this dream since it sounds like a lovely fantasy, meaning, that this CANNOT happen. But, on second thought, why not? So many dreams proposed by the commercial world are also fantastic. If we can believe in those fantasies, why not give a fair chance to the ‘fantasy’ of Isaiah too?

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD -

and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;

but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth...

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat,

the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.

The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The infant will play near the cobra’s den, the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

Last week Isaiah gave us the dream of swords being turned into ploughshares. This week we are given another dream to long for. Let good dreams flow in and out of human beings!

ஐரோப்பிய வரலாற்றில் தனியிடம் பெற்ற ஒரு நிகழ்வின் 30ம் ஆண்டு நினைவை, இவ்வாண்டு நவம்பர் 9ம் தேதி, நாம் சிறப்பித்தோம். ஜெர்மன் நாட்டை, கிழக்கு, மேற்கு என்று இரண்டாகப் பிரித்திருந்த பெர்லின் சுவர், 1989ம் ஆண்டு, நவம்பர் 9ம் தேதி வீழ்ந்தபோது, உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், மக்கள் மகிழ்ந்தனர். மக்கள் தாங்களாகவே இணைந்து மேற்கொண்ட சமுதாயப் புரட்சியால், ஜெர்மனி, ஒரே நாடாக இணைந்தது என்று வரலாறு சொன்னது. ஆனால், விரைவில், அந்த வரலாற்று நிகழ்வு, வர்த்தகப் பொருளாக மாற்றப்பட்டது. இடிக்கப்பட்ட அந்தச் சுவர், சிறு சிறு துண்டுகளாக்கப்பட்டு, நினைவுப் பொருள்களாக விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன. பெர்லின் சுவர் என்று சொல்லி, போலித் துண்டுகளும் விற்கப்பட்டதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

2001ம் ஆண்டு, செப்டம்பர் 11ம் தேதி, நியூயார்க் நகரில், உலக வர்த்தகக் கோபுரங்கள் இரண்டு, விமானங்களால் தாக்கப்பட்டு, இடிந்து விழுந்தன. அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டு வரலாற்றைக் காயப்படுத்திய ஒரு நிகழ்வு இது என்று கூறப்பட்டது. இக்கோபுரங்களின் இடிபாடுகளும், நினைவுப் பொருள்களாக விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன.

2010ம் ஆண்டு, அக்டோபர் மாதம், வத்திக்கானில், அருள் சகோதரி, மேரி மெக்கில்லாப் அவர்கள், (St.Mary MacKillop) ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் முதல் புனிதராக உயர்த்தப்பட்டார். அப்புனிதரின் உருவத்தை, நினைவுப் பொருள்களாக விற்பதில், ஆஸ்திரேலிய அரசுக்கும், வர்த்தகர்களுக்கும் இடையே, மோதல்கள் ஏற்பட்டன.

சமுதாயப் புரட்சி, தீவிரவாதத் தாக்குதல், புனிதராகும் திருச்சடங்கு என்று இவ்வுலகில் எந்நிகழ்வு நடந்தாலும், அதை, எவ்விதம் விற்பனை செய்யமுடியும் என்பதில், வர்த்தக உலகம், தீவிர முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்கிறது. அனைத்தையும் விற்பனைப் பொருளாக்கி, விலைபேசும் இப்போக்கு, மதம், கல்வி, நலவாழ்வு, என்ற அனைத்திலும் ஊடுருவியிருப்பது, வேதனையளிக்கிறது.

புனிதமான உண்மைகளையும், உணர்வுகளையும் கொண்டாடுவதற்கென்று உருவாக்கப்பட்ட சமய விழாக்கள் அனைத்திலும், வர்த்தக வாடை வீசுவது, வேதனை தருகிறது. சமய விழாக்களை எவ்வகையில் கொண்டாடவேண்டும் என்று, வியாபார உலகம் வழிகாட்டுகிறது. சமய விழாக்களின் அடிப்படையாக விளங்கும் உண்மைகள், சவால்கள் நிறைந்தவை என்பதால், அவற்றைப் பற்றிய எண்ணங்களுக்கு முதலிடம் கொடுக்காமல், நமது சமய விழாக்களை பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்களால் நிறைப்பது, வர்த்தக உலகின் குறிக்கோளாக விளங்குகிறது. வர்த்தக உலகம் விளம்பரப்படுத்தும் பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்களில் அதிகம் சிக்கியிருப்பது, நம் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா.

"அவசரப்பட்டு கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை ஆரம்பிக்காதீர்கள், தயவுசெய்து, டிசம்பர் 24 இரவு வரை காத்திருங்கள்" என்று, அமெரிக்காவின் Salt Lake City மறைமாவட்டத்தின் முன்னாள் ஆயர் John Wester அவர்கள், சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், தன் மறைமாவட்ட மக்களுக்கு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் மடலை அனுப்பினார். ஆயர் அனுப்பிய அந்த வேண்டுகோளை, வியாபார உலகின் பிடியிலிருந்து, கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவை விடுதலை செய்யும் ஒரு முயற்சியென்று பாராட்டலாம்.

ஆயர் Wester அவர்கள், இவ்வாறு சொன்னதற்குக் காரணம் என்ன? அமெரிக்காவில், ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும், நவம்பர் மாதத்தின் 4வது வியாழன், ‘நன்றியறிதல் நாள்’ என்று கொண்டாடப்படும். இறைவன் அளித்த நல்ல அறுவடைக்கு நன்றி சொல்லும் நாளாக, இந்நாளை, மக்கள் கொண்டாடிவந்தனர். ஆனால், வியாபார உலகம், விரைவில், இந்நாளை, ஒரு விடுமுறை கொண்டாட்டமாக மாற்றிவிட்டது. தற்போது, இந்த நன்றியறிதல் நாள், மத உணர்வு அதிகமற்ற சமுதாயத் திருநாளாகக் கொண்டாடப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

இந்த விழா முடிந்த கையோடு, வியாபார உலகம், கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களைத் துவக்கிவிடும். வியாபார உலகம் ஆரம்பித்து வைக்கும் இந்த கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவை, ஆடம்பரமாக, ஆர்ப்பாட்டமாக கொண்டாடச்சொல்லி, விளம்பரங்கள் தூண்டிவிடும். இந்தத் தூண்டுதலுக்கு இணங்க, ஒரு மாத அளவு கொண்டாடிவிட்டால், டிசம்பர் 24ம் தேதி இரவு, உண்மையான கிறிஸ்மஸ் வரும்போது, நாம் அனைவரும் களைத்துப் போய்விடுவோம் என்ற அக்கறையுடன், ஆயர் Wester அவர்கள், அந்த எச்சரிக்கையைத் தந்தார். களைத்துமட்டும் போய்விட மாட்டோம், கலைந்தும் போய்விடுவோம். வியாபார உலகம் விரிக்கும் மாயவலைக்குள் அகப்பட்டு, ஒவ்வொரு திருநாளின் உட்பொருளை விட்டுக் கலைந்து, வேறு வழிகளில் நம் மனங்கள் சிந்திக்கின்றன என்பது, வேதனையான உண்மை.

கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பு விழாவின் உண்மைப் பொருளை உணர்வதற்கு நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள வரம்நிறைந்த காலம், திருவருகைக் காலம். இறைவன் வருவார் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் நாம் காத்திருக்கும் காலம் இது. ஆனால், இறைவன் எந்த வடிவில் வருவார் என்பதை நாம் அறியோம். நாம் எதிர்பாராத வழிகளில் வந்து, நம்மை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்துவது, இறைவனுக்கே உரிய அழகு. இறைவனின் வரவு, நம்மை, வியப்பிலும், சில வேளைகளில் அதிர்ச்சியிலும் ஆழ்த்தமுடியும் என்பதைக் கூறும் பல கதைகளை நாம் கேட்டிருக்கிறோம். அத்தகைய கதைகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

வசதிமிகுந்த நகரப் பங்குக் கோவில் ஒன்றில், ஞாயிறு திருப்பலிக்காக மக்கள் கூடிவந்தனர். அன்று, அந்த பங்கிற்கு புதிய பங்கு அருள்பணியாளர் வருகிறார் என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்ததால், வழக்கத்திற்கு மேலாக மக்கள் கோவிலுக்கு வந்திருந்தனர். கோவிலுக்கு வெளியே, வீடற்ற ஒருவர் அமர்ந்து, கோவிலுக்குள் செல்வோர் அனைவருக்கும் வணக்கம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். ஒரே ஒருவர் மட்டும் அவருக்கு பதில் வணக்கம் சொன்னார். அவருக்கு முன் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கிண்ணத்தில் ஒருவரும் தர்மம் எதுவும் தரவில்லை.

திருப்பலி நேரம் நெருங்கியபோது, வீடற்ற அம்மனிதர், கோவிலுக்குள் புகுந்து, பீடத்தை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். அங்கிருந்த ஒரு பெரியவர், அவரை, கோவிலின் பின்பக்கம் சென்று அமருமாறு கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். வீடற்ற மனிதரும் இறுதி பெஞ்சில் சென்று அமர்ந்தார். பங்குப் பேரவையின் தலைவர், பீடத்திற்குச் சென்று, "நம் பங்கிற்கு வந்திருக்கும் புதிய பங்குத்தந்தையை உங்களுக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்க விழைகிறேன்" என்று கூறினார். அமர்ந்திருந்த மக்கள், ஆர்வத்துடன், வாசலை நோக்கித் திரும்பி நின்று, கரவொலி எழுப்ப ஆரம்பித்தனர். அவ்வேளையில், இறுதி பெஞ்சில் அமர்ந்திருந்த வீடற்ற மனிதர் எழுந்து, பீடம் நோக்கி நடந்தார். கரவொலி, சிறிது சிறிதாக அடங்கிப்போனது. அனைவரும் அதிர்ச்சியுடன் அம்மனிதரைப் பார்த்தவண்ணம் அமர்ந்திருந்தனர்.

பீடத்திற்குச் சென்ற அம்மனிதர், தான், அப்பங்கின் புதிய பங்குத்தந்தை என்று தன்னையே அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். பின்னர், அன்று காலையில் தனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவங்களை மக்களிடம் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார். அவர் பேச, பேச, அங்கிருந்தோர், தலையை நிமிர்த்தி அவரைப் பாக்கமுடியாமல் அமர்ந்திருந்தனர். ஒரு சிலரது கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தது. "இன்று இங்கு நடந்தது நமக்கெல்லாம் நல்லதொரு பாடம். வீட்டுக்குச் சென்று இதைப்பற்றி சிந்திப்போம். அடுத்தவாரம் நாம் மீண்டும் சந்திப்போம்" என்று, அப்புதிய பங்குத்தந்தை கூறி, மக்களை அனுப்பிவைத்தார்.

இறைவன் இவ்வடிவில்தான் வருவார், அவரது வரவை இப்படித்தான் கொண்டாடவேண்டும் என்று, சில வர்த்தக மந்திரங்களைச் சொல்லித் தரும் இவ்வுலகின் வழிகளிலிருந்து விலகி, அவரது உண்மையான வரவுக்காக, வழிமேல் விழி வைத்து காத்திருக்க, இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு நம்மை அழைக்கிறது. இறைவனின் வரவுக்காக நம்மையே எவ்விதம் தயாரிப்பது என்ற வழிமுறைகளை, திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், ஓர் எச்சரிக்கையாக விடுக்கிறார்.

அவர் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லியிருக்கும் வார்த்தைகள், எந்தவித இனிப்பும் கலக்காத, கசப்பான உண்மை. கசப்பான மருந்து. வியாபார உலகம் உருவாக்கும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் வாழ்த்து அட்டைகளில், திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் கூறியுள்ள வார்த்தைகள் இடம் பெறமுடியுமா என்று சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்தேன். ஊஹூம்... வாய்ப்பே இல்லை. இத்தகைய உண்மைகளை மறைத்து, அந்த உண்மைகளைச் சொல்பவர்களை மறைத்து, மற்ற கனவு நாயகர்களை, அவர்கள் சொல்லும் விளம்பர வரிகளை நம் மனங்களில் பதிய வைப்பதுதானே, வியாபார உலகின் விருப்பம்.

“கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை இவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் ஆம்பிக்காதீர்கள்” என்று சொன்ன ஆயர் Wester அவர்களை, வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால், வியாபார உலகம் கடத்திக் கொண்டுபோய், கிறிஸ்மஸ் முடியும்வரை கண்காணாத இடத்தில் வைத்துவிடும். கசப்பான உண்மைகளைச் சொன்ன திருமுழுக்கு யோவானை, யூத மதத் தலைவர்கள், இந்த உலகைவிட்டே அனுப்பத் துடித்தார்கள். ஏரோது மன்னன் வழியே, விரைவில், அனுப்பியும் விட்டார்கள். உண்மையைச் சொல்லும் எந்த இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் ஊரில் நல்ல பெயர் இருந்ததில்லையே! ஆனால், உண்மையைச் சொல்லி, உலகில் நன்மையை வளர்க்கும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள் நமது உலகிற்கு தேவை.

இறைவனின் பக்கம் நம்மை வழிநடத்தும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள், இறைப்பணியாளர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்களாய் இருப்பார்கள்; அவர்கள் உலகில் இருந்தால் இவ்வுலகம் எவ்வளவு அழகாக மாறும் என்பனவற்றை, இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா, ஓர் அழகியக் கனவாகத் தந்திருக்கிறார், இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில். இந்த வரிகளுக்கு விளக்கமே தேவையில்லை. எசாயாவின் இந்தக் கனவு, இன்று, நாம் வாழும் உலகில் நடைமுறையாக வேண்டும் என்ற ஏக்கத்தோடு இந்த வரிகளுக்குச் செவிமடுப்போம்.

இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா 11: 1-10

ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி அவர்மேல் தங்கியிருக்கும்: ஞானம், மெய்யுணர்வு, அறிவுரைத்திறன், ஆற்றல், நுண்மதி, ஆண்டவரைப்பற்றிய அச்ச உணர்வு - இவற்றை அந்த ஆவி அவருக்கு அருளும். அவரும் ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்பதில் மகிழ்ந்திருப்பார். கண் கண்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் நீதி வழங்கார்: காதால் கேட்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் தீர்ப்புச் செய்யார்: நேர்மையோடு ஏழைகளுக்கு நீதி வழங்குவார்: நடுநிலையோடு நாட்டின் எளியோரது வழக்கை விசாரிப்பார்: வார்த்தை எனும் கோலினால் கொடியவரை அடிப்பார்: உதட்டில் எழும் மூச்சினால் தீயோரை அழிப்பார். நேர்மை அவருக்கு அரைக்கச்சை: உண்மை அவருக்கு இடைக்கச்சை.

இத்தகைய நேரியவர்கள் வாழும் நாட்டில் என்ன நடக்கும் என்பதையும் இந்தக் கனவில் தொடர்ந்து கூறுகிறார் இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா:
