I Sunday of Advent

The cyclonic storm 'Nivar' crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between November 25 and 26. Thankfully, the storm did not cause too much damage as was predicted by the Indian Meterological Department and the media.

Three years back, on Sunday, November 26, 2017, residents of many coastal towns in Tamil Nadu must have lived in panic. There were rumours (created by the irresponsible sharing in the social media) that a tsunami was about to strike the coastal towns of Tamil Nadu, especially Nagapattinam. Thank God, this rumour did not come true. The number 26, and the fact that it was a Sunday, must have brought back memories of the tragic tsunami that devastated India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and many other Asian countries on December 26, 2004, the day after Christmas, which also was a Sunday – the Feast of the Holy Family. Thousands of families were uprooted on that day due to the tidal waves that crashed on us without any prior warning.

Added to the various natural calamities we have faced so far, this year, 2020, we faced one of the worst calamities in our living memory – COVID-19 pandemic. Many media outlets have spoken of this pandemic as the ‘beginning of the end’ – the end of the world!

When there is a natural disaster – like earthquake, tsunami, eruption of a volcano, hurricane, pandemic etc. – our minds tend to think of the end of the world. A few years back, some of us, or, most of us, may have had anxious moments… anxious because the end of the world was imminent. According to the Mayan prediction, 21-12-2012, that is, 21^st December 2012 was to be the end of the world. Such predictions and rumours have caused lots of anxiety for the human race right from the time of Christ… Or, perhaps, even earlier!

• In A.D. 204, Hippolytus, a Christian writer in Rome, recorded that a bishop was convinced that the Lord was going to return immediately. He urged his followers to sell all their possessions and to follow him into the wilderness to await the Lord’s coming.
• At the end of the first millennium, anticipation of the Second Coming ran high. On the last day of 999, the basilica of St. Peter’s at Rome was filled with people who were weeping and trembling as they expected the world to end.
• In 1978 the media flashed the shocking news of the mass suicide of 914 men and women from the U.S.A., belonging to a doomsday cult called The People’s Temple, in Jonestown, Guyana at the instruction of their paranoid leader Rev. Warren (Jim) Jones.
• In March 1997, 39 members (21 women and 18 men) of a California cult called Heaven’s Gate, headed by Marshall Applewhite, exploded onto the national scene with their mass suicide in a luxurious mansion at Rancho Santa Fe near San Diego in California. This was their preparation for being safely transported to heaven by a UFO, thus avoiding the tribulations accompanying the immediate end of the world.
• This anxiety ran high, once again, as we approached the end of 1999 and 2000. 

When we speak about ‘The End’, most of our thoughts and conversations are about how ‘terrible that day would be when the Master returns’. Some of us would have come across the experience, when someone would suddenly thrust a paper, or a pamphlet into our hands as we were walking down the road. Those were the roadside preachers who were trying to warn the people of the impending disaster. “The Day of the Lord is at hand”… was their constant theme.

Today we begin a new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. This season is meant to prepare us for the coming of the Divine Child at Christmas. This is also a season where we can think about the Second Coming of Christ. This is the theme of today’s gospel - Mark 13: 33-37

We are NOT SURE of the when, where and how of this Second Coming and the end of the world. It could come tomorrow or after hundred thousand years. But, we are VERY SURE of our going out of this world one day. Instead of spending our time and energy worrying about the end of the world, it would  surely be beneficial to us to spend time on our departure from the world. Even in our departure, instead of spending time on when we would depart, we can think about how we could or should depart. In today’s gospel, Christ gives us the necessary tips as to how we should prepare for our departure... Take heed, be watchful, be responsible!

Being watchful and being responsible have different shades of meaning. We can be watchful and be responsible out of fear or out of love. We can carry out our responsibilities for the sake of pleasing others (trying to be on our best behaviour in front of the Master) or, simply being honest and sincere in what we are doing, irrespective of whether we are being watched or not. Two stories can illustrate how one can work with dedication even if no one is watching over them.

Some years ago, a tourist visited one of the famous villas on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. An old gardener opened the gates, and the visitor stepped into the garden, which was perfectly kept. The visitor asked when the owner was last there. He was told, "Twelve years ago." Did he ever write? No. Where did he get instructions? From his agent in Milan. Does the master ever come? No. "But, you keep the grounds as though your master were coming back tomorrow", said the visitor. The old gardener quickly replied, "Not tomorrow, but today, sir, today."

Years ago, when 20th Century Fox advertised in the New York papers to fill a vacancy in its sales force, one applicant replied: "I am at present selling furniture at the address below. You may judge my ability as a salesperson if you will stop in to see me at any time, pretending that you are interested in buying furniture. When you come in, you can identify me by my red hair. And I should have no way of identifying you. Such salesmanship as I exhibit during your visit, therefore, will be no more than my usual workday approach and not a special effort to impress a prospective employer." From among more than 1500 applicants, this person got the job.

Doing something to please one’s own conscience and, ultimately God, would set the enlightened apart from the unenlightened, who keep doing things to please others all the time. Here are two samples from the lives of the enlightened…

John Wesley, an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was the founder of the Methodist movement, was once asked what he would do if he knew that that was his last day on earth. He replied, "At 4 o'clock I would have some tea. At 6 I would visit Mrs. Brown in the hospital. Then at 7:30 I would conduct a mid-week prayer service. At 10 I would go to bed and would wake up in glory."

Here is an incident from the life of St.Philip Neri: While Philip was playing cards with his friends, one of them asked him what he would do if he knew that his death was imminent. Without any hesitation, Philip told him that he would continue playing cards. Knowing the sense of humour Philip had, one can well imagine that if he had died playing cards, he would simply continue playing cards on the other side of the grave as well. Only his companions would have changed to… God and angles!

Even if we are not so enlightened as John Wesley, or, St Philip Neri, some hard realities of life help each of us to see more clearly the purpose of our lives. Probably most of us have heard of, or, read some of John Grisham’s novels, such as The Firm, Pelican Brief, and The Client. Despite his fame and wealth, Grisham makes a concerted effort to focus on things that have lasting meaning, including his faith in God.

Grisham remembers, as a young law student, the remarkable advice of a friend: “One of my best friends in college died when he was 25, just a few years after we graduated from Mississippi State University. I was in law school, and he called me one day and wanted to get together. So we had lunch, and he told me he had cancer. I couldn't believe it.

‘What do you do when you realize you are about to die?’ I asked. ‘It's real simple,’ he said. ‘You get things right with God, and you spend as much time with those you love as you can. Then you settle up with everybody else.’ Finally, he said, ‘You know, really, you ought to live every day, like you have only a few more days to live.’ Grisham concludes: ‘I haven't forgotten those words’”.

Let us beg of God to give us this enlightenment! 

As we begin our Advent season this year amidst the trials of the pandemic, cyclone and the aggressive ‘dictatorship-like’ behaviour of our politicians, we pray in the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “O that thou wouldst rend the heavens and come down… to make thy name known to thy adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at thy presence!” (Is. 64:1-2)

Oh that you would rend the heavens...

திருவருகைக்காலம் முதல் ஞாயிறு

நவம்பர் 25, 26 ஆகிய நாள்களில், தமிழகமும், புதுச்சேரியும், ‘நிவர்’ (Nivar) புயலின் தாக்கத்தை உணர்ந்தன. இந்தப் புயலைக்குறித்து வானிலை ஆய்வுகளும், ஊடகங்களும் கூறிய, பெரும் அழிவுகளை உருவாக்காமல் இது கடந்துசென்றதற்காக, இறைவனுக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம். அதேபோல், மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், 2017ம் ஆண்டு, நவம்பர் 26, ஞாயிறு, தமிழ் நாட்டின் கடற்கரைப் பகுதிகளில், குறிப்பாக, நாகப்பட்டினத்தில் சுனாமி வரக்கூடும் என்ற வதந்தி வலம் வந்தது. கடவுளின் கருணையால், அந்த வதந்தி உண்மையாகவில்லை. பலருடைய மனங்களில், 26 என்ற தேதி, 2004ம் ஆண்டு, டிசம்பர் 26ம் தேதியை நினைவுக்குக் கொணர்ந்திருக்கக்கூடும். அன்று, கிறிஸ்மஸ் முடிந்து அடுத்தநாள், ஞாயிறு, திருக்குடும்பத் திருநாளன்று, இந்தியா, இலங்கை, இந்தோனேசியா மற்றும் பல ஆசிய நாடுகளின் கடற்கரைப் பகுதிகளைத் தாக்கிய சுனாமிப் பேரலைகள், அழிவுகளைக் கொணர்ந்தன. பல இலட்சம் மக்களின் வாழ்வை புரட்டிப்போட்ட ஒரு பேரழிவு அது.

இவ்வாறு, அவ்வப்போது, நம்மை வதைத்துவரும் இயற்கைப் பேரிடர்கள் போதாதென்று, 2020 ஆண்டு முழுவதும் உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், கோவிட்-19 கொள்ளைநோயின் பரவல், அலை அலையாக எழுந்து, ஆயிரமாயிரம் உயிர்களைப் பலிவாங்கியவண்ணம் உள்ளது. பலர், இந்தக் கொள்ளைநோயை, உலகமுடிவின் ஓர் அடையாளமாகக் கூறிவருகின்றனர்.

மனித வரலாற்றைப் பின்னோக்கிப் பார்த்தால், உலகம் முடியப்போகிறது என்ற செய்தி அடிக்கடி பேசப்பட்டுள்ளது. கி.பி.204ம் ஆண்டு Hippolytus என்ற கிறிஸ்தவ எழுத்தாளர், அப்போது வாழ்ந்த ஆயர் ஒருவரைப் பற்றி எழுதியுள்ளார். உலகம் முடியப்போகிறது என்பதைத் தீவிரமாக நம்பிய அந்த ஆயர், தன் மக்களுக்கு ஓர் எச்சரிக்கை கொடுத்தார். அவர்களிடம் இருந்த சொத்துக்களையெல்லாம் விற்று, ஏழைகளுக்குப் பகிர்ந்து கொடுத்துவிட்டு, அவருடன் பாலை நிலத்திற்கு வரும்படி அவர்களை அழைத்தார். அங்கு அவர்கள் இறைவனின் வரவுக்குக் காத்திருக்கலாம் என்று சொன்னார்.

கி.பி.999ம் ஆண்டின் இறுதி நாட்களில் உலகம் முடியப்போகிறது என்று எண்ணிய பல்லாயிரம் கிறிஸ்தவர்கள், உரோம் நகரில், புனித பேதுரு பெருங்கோவில் வளாகத்தில் கூடி, அழுகையோடும், அச்சத்தோடும், உலகமுடிவை எதிர்பார்த்ததாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டில் உலகமுடிவு வந்துவிட்டது என்று தீர்மானித்த இரு குழுக்கள் வேதனையான முடிவுகள் எடுத்ததை செய்திகளில் வாசித்தோம். 1978ம் ஆண்டிலும், 1997ம் ஆண்டிலும் உலகமுடிவு வந்துவிட்டதென்று உணர்ந்த இரு குழுவினர், நஞ்சு அருந்தி தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டனர் என்ற செய்திகள் நமக்கு அதிர்ச்சியைத் தந்தன. 1999ம் ஆண்டு முடிந்து, 2000மாம் ஆண்டு துவங்கியபோது, இதே கலக்கம் மீண்டும் தலைதூக்கியது, நமக்கு நினைவிருக்கலாம்.

நகரங்களில், அவ்வப்போது, சாலையோரங்களில் யாராவது ஒருவர் நின்றுகொண்டு, போவோர் வருவோர் அனைவரிடமும் துண்டு பிரசுரங்களை அல்லது சிறு புத்தகங்களை இலவசமாக வழங்குவதை பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். அந்தப் பிரசுரங்களில் அடிக்கடி நாம் காணக்கூடிய ஒரு செய்தி: "ஆண்டவரின் நாள் அண்மித்துவிட்டது... விழித்தெழு" என்ற செய்தி. ஒவ்வொரு முறையும், உலகில், நிலநடுக்கம், எரிமலை வெடிப்பு, சுனாமி, கொள்ளைநோய் போன்ற பேரிடர்கள் நிகழும்போது, உலகமுடிவைப் பற்றி அதிகம் பேசுகிறோம், சிந்திக்கிறோம்.

திருவருகைக்காலத்தின் முதல் ஞாயிறான இன்று, புதியதொரு வழிபாட்டு ஆண்டை ஆரம்பிக்கிறோம். இறைமகனை, குழந்தை வடிவில் எதிர்பார்த்துக் காத்திருப்பதெற்கென உருவாக்கப்பட்ட திருவருகைக் காலத்தின் முதல் ஞாயிறன்று, உலகின் முடிவில் இறைவன் இரண்டாம் முறை வருவதை நினைவுறுத்தும் நற்செய்தி நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ளது. - மாற்கு நற்செய்தி 13: 33-37

உலகமுடிவைப் பற்றி நம்மால் தீர்மானமாக ஒன்றும் சொல்லமுடியாது. நாளையே வரலாம்; அல்லது, நாலாயிரம் கோடி ஆண்டுகள் சென்று வரலாம். ஆனால், நம் ஒவ்வொருவரின் தனிப்பட்ட உலகவாழ்வு முடியும் என்பது திண்ணமான உண்மை. எப்போது இந்த முடிவு வரும் என்பதும் நிச்சயமற்ற ஒன்று. நம் முடிவு எப்போது வரும் என்பதில் நாம் நேரம், சக்தி இவற்றைச் செலவிடாமல், நம் முடிவு எப்படி இருக்கப்போகிறது, அல்லது எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று சிந்தித்தால், பயன்பெறலாம். எதிர்பாராத நேரத்தில் வரும் இந்த முடிவைச் சந்திக்க, அந்த முடிவு நேரத்தில் வரும் இறைவனைச் சந்திக்க நாம் எப்படி நம்மையே தயாரித்து வருகிறோம் என்பதை எண்ணிப்பார்க்க, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நம்மைச் சிறப்பாக அழைக்கிறது.

விழிப்பாயிருங்கள், பொறுப்புணர்வுடன் செயல்படுங்கள் என்பவை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்கு விடுக்கும் அழைப்பு. பொறுப்புடன் நடந்துகொள்வது என்பது, தலைவர் இருக்கும்போது நல்லபெயர் எடுக்கவேண்டும்; அவர் இல்லாதபோது எப்படி வேண்டுமானாலும் நடந்துகொள்ளலாம் என்று நடிப்பது அல்ல. தலைவர் என்னை மதித்து ஒப்படைத்துள்ள பொறுப்பை, எல்லா நேரத்திலும் நானும் மதித்து நடந்து கொள்வதுதான், உண்மையான பொறுப்புணர்வு.

இத்தாலி நாட்டின் வடபகுதியில் அழகிய ஒரு மாளிகை இருந்தது. அதைச்சுற்றி அழகான ஒரு தோட்டமும் இருந்தது. சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளை ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் கவர்ந்துவந்த அந்த மாளிகையையும், தோட்டத்தையும், வயதில் முதிர்ந்த ஒருவர் பராமரித்து வந்தார். ஒருநாள், சுற்றுலாப் பயணி ஒருவர், அந்த மேற்பார்வையாளரிடம், "இந்த மாளிகையின் உரிமையாளர் இங்கு வந்து எத்தனை நாட்கள் ஆகின்றன?" என்று கேட்டார். மேற்பார்வையாளர், "12 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகின்றன" என்று சொன்னார். "ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நீங்கள் என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று சொல்ல, முதலாளி, எதுவும் கடிதமோ, வேறு தொடர்போ வைத்துள்ளாரா?" என்று கேட்டதற்கு, அவர், "இல்லை" என்று பதில் சொன்னார். "நீங்கள் இந்த மாளிகையையும், தோட்டத்தையும் சுத்தம் செய்வதைப் பார்க்கும்போது, உங்கள் முதலாளி ஏதோ நாளையே வரப்போகிறாரோ என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது" என்று சொன்ன அந்த சுற்றுலாப் பயணியைப் பார்த்து சிரித்தார் மேற்பார்வையாளர். பின்னர், "நாளை இல்லை நண்பரே, இன்றே அவர் வரக்கூடும்" என்று பதில் சொன்னார்.

12 ஆண்டுகளாய், ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் 'தலைவன் இன்றே வரக்கூடும்' என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் கடமைகளைச் செய்த இந்த மேற்பார்வையாளரைப் போல் நாம் செயலாற்றவேண்டும் என்பதையே இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்கிறார். தலைவன் வந்தாலும் சரி, வராவிடினும் சரி, தனக்கு தரப்பட்டுள்ள பணிகளை சரிவர செய்யவேண்டும் என்று எண்ணுவதற்கு, தனியொரு பக்குவம் பெறவேண்டும்.

20th Century Fox என்ற திரைப்பட நிறுவனம், 'விற்பனை செய்யும் திறமை பெற்றவர் ஒருவர் தேவை' என்று, ஒருமுறை விளம்பரம் வெளியிட்டது. ஆயிரக்கணக்கானோர் இந்த விளம்பரத்தைக் கண்டு, விண்ணப்பம் அனுப்பியிருந்தனர். அவர்களில் ஒரு பெண்மணி அனுப்பியிருந்த பதில், நிறுவனத்தினரின் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்தது. அந்த விண்ணப்பத்தில், ஒரு கடையின் முகவரியைக் குறிப்பிட்டு அப்பெண் எழுதியிருந்தது இதுதான்:

"நான் தற்போது இந்தக் கடையில் மேசை, நாற்காலிகள் விற்கும் பணி செய்து வருகிறேன். இந்தக் கடைக்கு நீங்கள் வந்தால் என்னை எளிதில் அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ளலாம். இங்கிருக்கும் பணியாளர்களில் எனக்கு மட்டுமே தலைமுடி சிவந்த நிறத்தில் உள்ளது. எந்த முன்னறிவிப்பும் இன்றி நீங்கள் கடைக்கு வந்து, நான் பணிசெய்யும் விதத்தைக் கவனிக்கலாம். நீங்கள் யாரென்று எனக்குத் தெரிய வாய்ப்பில்லை. எனவே உங்கள் நன்மதிப்பைப் பெறும் வகையில், நீங்கள் வரும் நேரம் மட்டும் நான் வித்தியாசமாக நடந்து கொள்ளவும் வாய்ப்பில்லை. நான் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் விற்பனை செய்யும் திறமையையே நீங்கள் வரும் நாளிலும் நான் வெளிப்படுத்துவேன். அந்தத் திறமை உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்திருந்தால், எனக்கு உங்கள் நிறுவனத்தில் வாய்ப்பு கொடுங்கள்" என்று அந்தப் பெண் எழுதியிருந்தார். வேலைக்கு விண்ணப்பம் செய்திருந்த 1,500 பேரில், அந்தப் பெண் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டார் என்பதை, சொல்லவும் வேண்டுமா?

பிறரது கவனம் நம்மீது இருக்கிறது என்பதை உணரும் நேரங்களில், நாம் நடந்துகொள்ளும் முறை வேறுபட்டிருக்கும். குழந்தைகளிடமும், மிகவும் வயதானவர்களிடமும் இத்தகைய வேறுபாடுகள் அதிகம் இருக்காது. அதேபோல், ஆன்மீகத்தில் மிகவும் ஆழ்ந்து தெளிந்தவர்களிடமும் இத்தகைய வேறுபாடுகள் வெளிப்படாது. யார் பார்த்தாலும், பார்க்காமல் போனாலும் சரி, அவர்கள் எந்த நேரத்திலும், ஒரே விதமான, உண்மையான ஈடுபாட்டுடன் ஒவ்வொரு நாள் செயல்களையும் செய்வர். 

"A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one." "சோகத்தில் வாழும் ஒரு மனதைவிட, மகிழ்வில் நிறைந்த மனம், எளிதில் உன்னதத்தை அடையும்" என்ற விருதுவாக்குடன் வாழ்ந்தவர், புனித பிலிப் நேரி. நகைச்சுவை உணர்வுடன் எப்போதும் வாழ்ந்ததாகச் சொல்லப்படும் இப்புனிதரின் வாழ்வில் நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வு இது. புனித பிலிப் நேரி அவர்கள், ஒருநாள், நண்பர்களுடன் சீட்டு விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது சாவைப்பற்றிய பேச்சு அங்கு எழுந்தது. நண்பர்களில் ஒருவர், அவரிடம், "பிலிப், இதோ, அடுத்த நிமிடமே நீ சாகப்போகிறாய் என்று தெரிந்தால், என்ன செய்வாய்?" என்று கேட்டார். பிலிப், அவரிடம், "தொடர்ந்து சீட்டு விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருப்பேன்." என்றாராம்.

சாவை பயங்கரமான ஒரு மாற்றமாக, முடிவாகப் பார்ப்பவர்கள் அதைக் கண்டு பயப்படலாம். காரணம்? அவர்களது வாழ்வுக்கும், சாவுக்கும் இடையே ஏகப்பட்ட முரண்பாடுகள் இருக்கலாம். இந்த முரண்பாடுகளை எல்லாம் சரிசெய்துவிட்டு, சாவைச் சந்திக்க அவர்களுக்கு அதிக நேரம் தேவைப்படுகிறது. ஆனால், வாழ்வு முழுவதையும் நல்ல விதமாக பொறுப்புணர்வுடன் வாழ்பவர்களுக்கு, வாழ்ந்தவர்களுக்கு சாவு எந்த வகையிலும் பயத்தை உண்டாக்காது என்பதற்கு புனித பிலிப் நேரி அவர்கள் நல்லதோர் எடுத்துக்காட்டு. சாவின் வழியாகத் தன்னைச் சந்திக்கப் போவது அல்லது தான் சென்றடையப் போவது இறைவன் தான் என்றான பிறகு ஏன் பயம், பரபரப்பு எல்லாம்? தேவையில்லையே. பிலிப் நேரியைப் பொருத்தவரை நான் இப்படியும் கற்பனை செய்து பார்க்கிறேன். அந்த நண்பர் சொன்னது போலவே, சீட்டு விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது அவருக்கு சாவு நேரிட்டால், மறு வாழ்வில் அந்த இறைவனோடு தன் விளையாட்டைத் தொடர்ந்திருப்பார் பிலிப். வாழ்க்கையில் இறைவனை அடிக்கடி சந்தித்து வந்த அவருக்கு பயம் பரபரப்பு எதற்கு?

இந்த நிலை எல்லாருக்கும் கிடைக்கும் ஒரு பாக்கியம் அல்ல. சூழலுக்குத் தக்கதுபோல் வாழ்வை மாற்றாமல் வாழ்ந்த பல உயர்ந்த மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து, நாம் பாடங்களைக் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
