Parable of the Growing Seed

Many of us may have seen the TV show – ‘Got Talent’ – conducted in various countries. Although this is a show that is predominantly talent based, at times, the background stories of the persons appearing on stage, touch our hearts. One such person, appeared on America’s Got Talent (AGT) show, last Tuesday - June 8.

Jane Marczewski, a 30-year-old lady from Ohio took the stage. She said that when she sings, she goes by the name Nightbirde. She was going to sing her original song titled: “It’s Okay”. But when the judges began questioning about her background, her story was anything but okay. Before she began her performance, Nightbirde told the auditorium her devastating story: "’It's Okay’ is the story of the last year of my life. I have not been working the last few years, I have been dealing with cancer. Last time I checked, I had some cancer in my lungs, my spine and my liver," she explained to the judges.

When one of the judges said, “So, you’re not okay”, she, with her beaming smile, said, “Well, not in every way, no” and then added a very lovely statement defining how she wanted to be known: "It's important that everyone knows I'm so much more than the bad things that happen to me," This statement prompted a huge applause from the crowd. Then she began to sing. Her song revolved around the idea: “It’s okay, if you’re lost. We’re all a little lost and it’s all right”.

After she finished singing, there was a standing ovation from the audience as well as the four judges. One of the judges appreciated her for her stunning voice and said that her song had so much authenticity and added, “You just almost casually told us what you are going through.” Saying this, the judge was filled with emotions and could not speak further. At that moment, Jane said: “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.” Her performance prompted the judge to give her a golden buzzer!

After she won the golden buzzer and went back stage, Terry Crews, the host of ‘America’s Got Talent’ show, told Jane: “You blew us all away. You are the voice we all need to hear this year”. What Terry said can be interpreted as referring to Jane’s lovely voice we need to hear in this year’s competition, or, it could also be interpreted as referring to Jane’s story which needs to be heard over and over again during this special year when people are struggling with not only physical survival, but many other forms of survival.

In the closing minutes of the YouTube video, Jane says: “I have 2% chance of survival, but 2% is not zero percent. 2% is something and I wish people know how amazing it is.” Terry was right. Statements like this, need to heard again and again to fill us with a sense of hope.

That is what is happening in the YouTube. 24 hours after this video was uploaded on the YouTube, there were over 2.24 million (2,243,104) views. This Saturday afternoon, this number has swelled to 14,589,056 and is still climbing. Among these 14.5 million views, we can be sure that there are thousands of viewers fighting with cancer and other forms of illnesses, including COVID-19, who must have drawn inspiration from the ‘seed’ called Nightbirde. Here are a few comments from the YouTube page:

WHEN SHE SAID “you can’t wait till life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy” mannnnnn i needed that one!!!!

“2 percent is not zero. 2 percent is something.” Miss Nightbirdie, that can only come from a courageous woman who has beaten her fears and has the wisdom that comes from being through hardship. I bow to you and wish you all fortune and happiness.

She just gave me the best life advice. She turned her pain and struggles as the remedy of my weary and broken heart. Nightbirde, you are a miracle to many fragmented souls during this prevalent times. (these tough times?)

I don’t care about the finals! This is our winner right here. Her presence, her aura, her smile, her confidence, her tenacity, all while fighting to live is absolutely beautiful! We love you Night-Bird!

An angel. Just what we needed in these trying times.

I have described Nightbirde’s performance on AGT, and her background story in great length for two reasons: One – stories like this serve to keep our hopes alive in this pandemic when we have been loaded with ‘negative’ news day after day. Two – today’s Gospel (Mark 4:26-34) invites us to reflect on a seed growing silently, as well as, the smallest mustard seed becoming the greatest of all shrubs, putting forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.

Every seed that falls to the ground goes through a near-death experience. We remember what Jesus said on another occasion: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24). When we recollect that Jesus said these words on the eve of his passion, make them more significant.

Once the seed goes through death and burial, it brings forth a rich harvest or becomes a sanctuary for the birds. We know that ‘simple, humble seeds’ like Jane, although facing death every passing moment, have sown positive energy all around.  We need to be humble enough to learn from seeds. Let us give an honest try to this learning process this Sunday.

Jesus had a deep fascination with nature. He was constantly learning from nature and was keen on sharing his insights of nature through his parables. Seed, flowers, vine, branches, trees, lilies, birds… all of them were his favourite subjects. Having been a carpenter himself, his contact with and respect for nature must have been quite deep.

Today’s gospel passage is, once more, an evidence of his fascination with nature. Today’s Gospel passage from Mark gives us two parables of Jesus – the less-known Parable of the Growing Seed (Mk. 4:26-29) and the more famous Parable of the Mustard Seed (Mk. 4:30-32).

With humility, let us enter the school of nature where Jesus is waiting to teach us simple truths about nature. When we read the parable of the silently Growing Seed, there could be a condescending smile escaping our lips. Jesus’ words may sound very naïve to us. Although Jesus was not giving a class on plant biology, and was more interested in talking about the Kingdom, still, his words sound too simplistic about the process of agriculture. Here are the words of Jesus:

Mark 4: 26-29

And he said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

Jesus seems to make agriculture a very simple process… All that we need to do is sow the seed and wait for the harvest. Between our sowing and reaping, nature will work… Too simple! Too naïve! On a deeper analysis, what Jesus seems to say in this parable is what the world leaders keep saying in a more sophisticated way especially when they come together for international meetings. Every Earth Summit keeps repeating the slogan – Do not tamper with nature… Allow nature to work!

The first Earth Summit took place in Rio in 1992. That Summit is remembered well for only one reason – Severn Cullis Suzuki!  The Earth Summit 1992 held in Rio, Brazil, was swept away by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a 13-year-old girl from Canada. The six minutes talk that she gave in the summit, is still doing enough rounds on the internet. What Severn Suzuki shared 30 years back still sounds relevant and drives home some poignant questions for all of us still. One of the most powerful lines from the appeal of Suzuki was: “If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!”  If only we could listen to our future generations and stop breaking the universe, the environment and the human family… If only we could listen to what Jesus is telling us in today’s parable – Allow nature to work…

If we cannot leave a wholesome universe for our next generation, let us at least leave a broken world, instead of a completely devastated one for them! Warning bells do ring now and then about this impending devastation… the last one being from COVID-19. When shall we learn the very simple, fundamental truth… to let Nature be!

This is exactly what Jesus is telling us in today’s gospel. Jesus is trying to teach us lessons in patience and hope, traits that have long disappeared from our world. Our greed and impatience have created more havoc with nature! May the post-covid era bring us to our senses and help us to learn lessons of life with more humility!

ஜேன் அவர்களைப்பற்றியும், அவர் கலந்துகொண்ட நிகழ்வைப்பற்றியும், இவ்வளவு விரிவாகக் கூறுவதற்கு இரு காரணங்கள் உண்டு. இளம்பெண்  ஜேன் அவர்களின் கதையைப்போன்று, நேர்மறையான உணர்வுகளையும், நம்பிக்கையையும் தரும் கதைகளை, இந்நாள்களில் நாம் அதிகம் கேட்பது, நம் உள்ளங்களுக்கு நல்லது. என்பது, முதல் காரணம்.

அடுத்து, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், (மாற்கு 4 : 26-34) யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல், தானாகவே வளரும் விதை, மற்றும், பெரியதொரு செடியாக வளரும் மிகச் சிறிய கடுகுவிதை என்ற இரு உவமைகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, ஜேன் போன்றவர்களைப்பற்றிய வாழ்க்கை விவரங்கள், விதைகளாக மாறி, நமக்குள் பலன்கள் தரவேண்டும் என்பது, இரண்டாவது காரணம்

மண்ணில் விதைக்கப்படும் ஒவ்வொரு விதையும், தான் மடிந்து புதைந்தால்தான், பல மடங்கு பயன்தரும். இந்த எண்ணத்தை வெளிப்படுத்த, இயேசு மற்றொரு விதையைப்பற்றி கூறிய கூற்று, நினைவில் தோன்றுகிறது: "கோதுமை மணி மண்ணில் விழுந்து மடியாவிட்டால் அது அப்படியே இருக்கும். அது மடிந்தால்தான் மிகுந்த விளைச்சலை அளிக்கும் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்" (யோவான் 12:24). தான் ஒரு விதையாக மண்ணில் புதைக்கப்படப்போகிறோம் என்ற எண்ணம் இயேசுவின் உள்ளத்தில் மேலோங்கியிருந்த வேளையில், அவர் இந்த 'உவமை'யைக் கூறியுள்ளார் என்ற உண்மை, இவ்வுவமைக்கு இன்னும் அதிக ஆழத்தைத் தருகிறது.

ஒரு விதை, மரணத்தையொத்த அனுபவம் பெறும்போது, பல விதைகளை வழங்குகிறது, அல்லது, பல உயிர்களுக்கு நிழல்தரும் மரமாக உயர்கிறது. இளம்பெண் ஜேன் அவர்கள், AGT நிகழ்வில் தோன்றிய YouTube பதிவை, 24 மணி நேரத்தில் ஏறத்தாழ 23 இலட்சம் பேர் பார்த்திருந்தனர். அடுத்த இரு நாள்களில், இப்பதிவைப் பார்த்தோரின் எண்ணிக்கை, ஆறு மடங்காக உயர்ந்து, இச்சனிக்கிழமை காலையில், 1 கோடியே, 38 இலட்சத்தைத் தாண்டி, (13,870,702) இன்னும் வளர்ந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளது. இத்தனை இலட்சம் பேரில், புற்றுநோய், கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்று போன்ற பல பிரச்சனைகளைச் சந்தித்துவரும் ஆயிரமாயிரம் பேரின் உள்ளங்களில், இல்லங்களில், ஜேன் அவர்கள், நம்பிக்கை விதைகளை விதைத்திருப்பார் என்று உறுதியாக நம்பலாம்.

விதைகளிடமிருந்து பாடங்கள் கற்றுக்கொள்ள நமக்கு பணிவுள்ள மனம் தேவை. தானாக வளரும் விதை, கடுகு விதை என்ற இரு விதைகள் வழியே, இயேசு சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை, பணிவான உள்ளத்துடன் பயில முயல்வோம்.

பொதுவாகவே, இயற்கை என்ற பள்ளியில், இறைவன் நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை, கவனமாகக் கற்றிருந்தால், இயற்கையை அழிவிலிருந்து எவ்விதம் காப்பாற்றுவது என்று கவலைப்படும் நிலைக்கு நாம் வந்திருக்கத் தேவையில்லை. இயற்கையைவிட நாம் அறிவாளிகள் என்ற இறுமாப்பில், இறைவன் படைத்த இயற்கையை சின்னாபின்னமாக்கிவிட்டு, இப்போது, இறந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் இயற்கையை எப்படி உயிர்பிப்பது என்று கற்றுக்கொள்ள, உச்சி மாநாடுகள் நடத்திவருகிறோம்.

மனிதர்களாகிய நாம், நம் சுயநல வெறியால், இயற்கையைச் சீரழித்து, ஏனைய உயிர்களை, அளவுக்கதிகமாக வதைத்துவந்ததன் விளைவாக, கோவிட்-19 பெருந்தொற்றையும், அதன் உறவு தொற்றுக்களையும் இவ்வுலகில் புகுத்திவிட்டோம். இப்போது, இவற்றை நம் நடுவிலிருந்து இனி விரட்டியடிக்க முடியாது என்பதை உணர்ந்து, இந்தக் கிருமிகளோடு எவ்வாறு வாழ்வது என்ற பாடங்களைப் பயில முயன்று வருகிறோம்.

ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்தே, இறைவன் தந்த கொடையான இயற்கையை அடக்கி ஆளாமல், அதனுடன் நாம் எவ்வாறு இணைந்து வாழமுடியும் என்ற பாடத்தைப் பயின்றிருந்தால், தற்போது, கிருமிகளோடு வாழும் பாடங்கள் நமக்குத் தேவையில்லாமல் போயிருக்கும். இயற்கையை, அதன் வழியில் வளரவிடுவதே தலைசிறந்த ஞானம் என்பதை, இயேசு, 'தானாகவே வளரும் விதை' உவமை வழியே சொல்லித்தர விழைகிறார்.

மாற்கு நற்செய்தியில் மட்டும் நாம் காணும் இந்த அழகிய உவமை (மாற்கு 4: 26-29) கேட்பதற்கு மிக எளிதான உவமை. வேளாண்மை என்பது மிகவும் எளிதான விடயம் என்ற கற்பனையை, இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகள் உருவாக்குகின்றன. விதைப்பவர் செய்யவேண்டியதெல்லாம், மிக, மிக எளிதான காரியங்கள்... விதைக்கவேண்டும், காத்திருக்கவேண்டும், அறுவடைக்காலம் வந்ததும் அறுவடை செய்யவேண்டும்... அவ்வளவுதான். விதைப்பதற்கும், அறுவடை செய்வதற்கும் இடைப்பட்டக் காலத்தில், இயற்கை தானாகச் செயல்படும் என்ற கருத்தில் இயேசு பேசியிருக்கிறார். "அவர் எதுவும் செய்யாமலே நாள்கள் நகர்ந்து செல்கின்றன. அவருக்குத் தெரியாமல் விதை முளைத்து வளருகிறது... நிலம் தானாகவே விளைச்சல் அளிக்கிறது" (மாற்கு 4: 27) என்பவை, இயேசுவின் வார்த்தைகள்.

இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, நமக்குள் கேலிச்சிரிப்பு எழுவதற்கு வாய்ப்புண்டு. இயேசுவுக்கு விவசாயம்பற்றி சரிவரத் தெரியவில்லை என்ற மமதையில் எழும் கேலிச்சிரிப்பு அது. ஆனால், இந்த உவமையின் ஆழத்தைப் புரிந்துகொண்டால், நம் கேலி மறைந்து, கேள்விகள் மனதை உறுத்தும். இந்த உவமையில், இயேசு சுட்டிக்காட்டுவது, எளிதான, இயற்கை வழிகள்... இந்த இயற்கை வழியில் நாம் சென்றிருந்தால்... நம் பேராசைகளுக்கும், அவசரங்களுக்கும் ஏற்றபடி இயற்கையை மாற்றாமல், அது செயல்படும் போக்கில் நாம் சென்றிருந்தால்... இயற்கையை இவ்வளவு சீரழித்திருப்போமா, கோவிட் கிருமியின் குடும்பத்தை நம் மத்தியிலும், நமக்குள்ளும் வாழ அழைத்திருப்போமா என்ற கேள்விகள் எழுகின்றன.

இந்த உவமையில் இயேசு முக்கியமாக வலியுறுத்துவன - பொறுமை, நிதானம், நம்பிக்கை போன்ற அற்புத குணங்கள்... இந்த அற்புத குணங்கள், நாம் வாழும் உலகில், பெருமளவு காணாமல்போய்விட்டன. இன்றைய அவசர உலகின் கணக்குப்படி, இன்று விதைக்க வேண்டும், நாளையே அறுவடை செய்யவேண்டும்.

நமது அவசரத்துக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்கும் வண்ணம், தொழில் நுட்பங்கள், வேதியல் உரங்கள், விதைகளில் மரபணு மாற்றங்கள், திடீர் விதைகள், திடீர் பயிர்கள் என்று எத்தனை, எத்தனை விபரீதச் சோதனைகள். இந்தச் சோதனைகளின் தீய விளைவுகளால், ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் விவசாயிகளின் தற்கொலைகளும் நிகழ்ந்துவருகின்றன.

சுயநலம், பேராசை, குறுக்குவழி, உடனடித்தீர்வுகள், அவசரம், என்ற களைகளை ஆரம்பத்திலிருந்தே நமது தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும், சமுதாய வாழ்விலும் நாம் வேரோடு களைந்திருந்தால், சுற்றுச்சூழலைப்பற்றி இவ்வளவு தூரம் கவலைப்பட்டிருக்கத் தேவையில்லை. பூமிக்கோள உச்சி மாநாடுகளை நடத்தியிருக்கத் தேவையில்லை. ஒரு மாநாட்டில் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டத் தீர்மானங்கள் சரிவர நடக்காமல் போனதால், அடுத்தடுத்து, உலக உச்சி மாநாடுகளை நடத்தியுள்ளோம்.

அடிப்படையில் மனித சமுதாயத்தில் ஆழமாய் வேரூன்றியிருக்கும் சுயநலத்தையும் அதன் கிளைகளாய் வளர்ந்திருக்கும் பேராசை, குறுக்குவழிகள் என்ற களைகளையும் நீக்காவிட்டால், மீண்டும், மீண்டும் பூமிக்கோள உச்சி மாநாடுகள் மட்டும் நடைபெறுமே தவிர, நாம் முழு மனித வளர்ச்சியில் உச்சிகளை அடைவது கடினமாகிவிடும்.

மண்ணில் புதையுண்டு, தங்கள் உருவை இழந்து, செடிகளாக, மரங்களாக மாறி, ஏனைய உயிர்களை வாழவைக்கும் விதைகளைப்போல, இவ்வுலகில் வாழும் இளம்பெண் ஜேன் போன்றவர்கள் தரும் நம்பிக்கையும், உறுதியும், நம் உள்ளங்களில் இன்று விதைக்கப்படவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம். மனிதர்களாகிய நாம், சுயநல வெறியை அழித்து, இறைவன் வழங்கிய அற்புதக் கொடையான இயற்கையைப் பேணிக்காக்கவும், இயற்கையோடு இயைந்து வாழவும் தேவையான பாடங்களை பயில, இறைவன், நமக்கு உள்ளொளியை வழங்குவாராக!
