The Feast of the Holy Family
Today, December 31, is
the last day of the Year. It is also the Feast of the Holy Family.
We begin our reflections with the final day of 2023.
A few hours more… and
December 2023 will make way for January 2024. The month of January is named
after Janus, the Roman god with two faces – one looking back and the other
looking forward. Every year, our media gets busy ‘looking back’ at the year we
have travelled. This retrospective exercise of the media usually leaves us with
discouragement. We become tired of the negative stuff highlighted by the media.
To help us overcome
this negativity, the readings of this Sunday emphasize the theme of ‘faith’.
The exemplary faith, against all odds, shown by Abram – later, Abraham – is
highlighted both in the First Reading taken from Genesis (Genesis 15:1-6,
21:1-3) and the Second Reading taken from the Letter to the Hebrews (Hebrews
11:8,11-12.17-19).
The invitation of God
to Abram, given at the beginning of the first reading gives us some clues,
especially in the context of how we need to say goodbye to 2023. The Lord
took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars – if indeed
you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Gen.15:5)
The Lord invites us to
‘go outside’ and ‘look up at the sky’, instead of looking at the TV or the
newspapers as we say goodbye to 2023. Looking up at the sky helps us sing with
full gusto, ‘Te Deum’ praising God for the blessings we have received in the
year, 2023. This invitation of God helped Abraham to become the father of all
believers. Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as
righteousness. (Gen.15:6)
In the second reading,
taken from the Letter to the Hebrews, we hear a eulogy of the faith of Abraham.
Chapter 11 of Hebrews is a treatise on Faith. It begins with the words: Now
faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
This is what the ancients were commended for. (Heb.11:1-2) Then it goes
on to explain the faith of Abraham. And so, from this one man, and he as
good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as
countless as the sand on the seashore. (Heb.11:12) On this final day of
the year 2023, with its overload of catastrophes, both natural and human made,
we pray – through the intercession of Abraham – for the grace, to keep our
faith and hope alive! Not only that… We pray that we may pass on our positive
vibrations of hope to the next generations, especially the children!
Now, we turn our
attention to the Feast of the Holy Family. Norman Vincent Peale, a great
preacher and the author of many inspiring books, including the famous book,
‘The Power of Positive Thinking’, describes Christmas in these words: "Christmas
waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more
beautiful." Although this quote is lovely, we are haunted by questions
about the Christmas Season experienced by the Holy Family. Was there anything
soft or beautiful about the First Christmas? Was there anything to celebrate
for the Holy Family in the context of the killing of the Holy Innocents, or the
flight into Egypt?
Similar questions haunt
our minds and hearts as we see thousands of families destroyed by the Russian
and Israeli armies in Ukraine and Gaza. All the world leaders together seem to
have no power to control two mad men – Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu.
These two leaders remind us that ‘Herods’ still unleash their madness against
innocent people, especially children. How many thousands of families have been
broken due to the unrestrained hunger for power that these two leaders are
suffering from? Such hunger for power created the First World War and that war
became the reason for the establishment of the Feast of the Holy Family.
The feast of the Holy
Family was more of a private devotion popularised by some religious
congregations for many centuries. Pope Pius XI made this feast more ‘official’
in the year 1921. The reason behind such a move, as I see, was the First World
War. This war was over in 1918. One of the major casualties of this war was the
‘family’ – the tragic death of dear ones killed on the battlefield, orphaned
children, destroyed ‘homes’ etc… Wishing to infuse some hope in the hearts of
people devastated by this war, the Church officially integrated the Feast of
the Holy Family in the liturgical cycle.
The feast of the Holy
Family as we have today is a gift of the Second Vatican Council which took
place in the 60s. What was so special about the 60s? Although there was no
major political war, people had to face other types of wars. The world was
experiencing quite a few changes. One of the major crises was the ‘rebellion’
of the youth. Young people were very disillusioned with the way the world was
shaping up. Some of them tried to set things right; many others tried to
‘escape’ reality, since it was too hard to face. Many of them sought peace and
love outside families. The Church, in an attempt to restore family as the locus
and focus of a healthy Christian life, included the Feast of the Holy Family as
part of the Octave of Christmas – the Sunday after Christmas. Thus, the history
of this feast tells us that the Church was not a silent spectator to the
destruction caused to the basic foundation of human society – namely, family –
but made the family the locus of hope!
When we think of the
Holy Family, we are also painfully aware that the incidents that happened
around this family were not holy in any sense. They were asked to run for their
life overnight. The children in Bethlehem
We are painfully aware
of the violence that keeps destroying the world, over and over again. Due to
this tsunami of violence, the problems of refugees and massacre of children
continue unabated in the 21st century. In his special ‘Urbi et Orbi’
message delivered on Christmas Day – 25 December 2023, Pope Francis focussed on
the ongoing war in the Holy Land. He began the message with these words: The eyes
and the hearts of Christians throughout the world turn to Bethlehem; in these
days, it is a place of sorrow and silence, yet it was there that the
long-awaited message was first proclaimed: “To you is born this day in the
city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord” (Lk 2:11). Those words
spoken by the angel in the heavens above Bethlehem are also spoken to us.
The Holy Father went
on to talk about how children were massacred around Bethlehem when Jesus was
born and how the same tragedy continues today. Then he spoke of war as “an
aimless voyage, a defeat without victors, an inexcusable folly”. He
strongly condemned the ‘merchants of death’ who continue to produce arms and
sell them. He concluded the message with a strong appeal to all of us that we
should speak against these merchants of death and against governments spending
lots of money on army which should have been used for eradicating poverty and
hunger.

I wish to close my
reflection with the powerful message given by the children of the Ramallah
Friends School, Palestine. Three weeks ago, the children of this school
have posted a video in YouTube with the title “RFS Song to the World”. Here
is the short write-up as an introduction to their song: From Ramallah
Friends School to the world, we share our version of the timeless “Little
Drummer Boy.” Our hearts come together in prayer for the safety of the children
in Gaza. May our shared prayers echo for peace and justice, weaving a tapestry
of hope that goes beyond borders, embracing the shared humanity we all hold
dear.
The children, I
presume, sing in Arabic language. Here is the English translation of the song
as it appears on the screen giving us an idea of what the children sing:
Look at the
children of Gaza crying
The children of
Gaza are dying from war
And the world is
standing by, watching
It can see but does
not want to hear
It hears but
doesn’t speak
Justice in this
world is heartless
And it doesn’t
speak
After these lines, the
children begin to hum, while a child speaks out the following words: When
can I dream of a world without fear, where we don’t hear guns or worry about
being bombed? I am only a child, born to live, not to die… The last few
words are repeated slowly, and the child closes with an emphatic ‘NOT TO
DIE’.
The words sung by the
children for the second stanza of the “Little Drummer Boy”, touched me deeply.
Thank God for whoever wrote those words. While the first stanza spoke about the
present hopeless situation in Gaza, the second stanza speaks about the resolve
of the children to build up the community of Gaza, come what may! Here are the
words of the second stanza:
Gaza is calling, my
children
We want love, life
and justice
We will create it
with our own hands, no matter what happens
We will build our
country after destruction
Home after home, we
are determined
Gaza is strong, no
matter what

The YouTube video ends
with a very meaningful and touching photo in which the children of Gaza,
standing on the street filled with the broken pieces of their homes, make a
tiny human pyramid. The design of the Christmas tree is drawn around this
pyramid of children ending with a shining star at the top of the tree. The closing
slate of the video shows this message:
May this Christmas
bestow upon us the profound gifts of justice peace and unity.
Let the spirit of
love guide us towards a future where humanity prevails.

மாதத்துடன் துவங்கும். ஆண்டின் முதல் மாதம், ‘ஜானுஸ்’ (Janus) என்ற
உரோமையத் தெய்வத்தின் பெயரால், ஜ(ச)னவரி என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
‘ஜானுஸ்’ தெய்வத்திற்கு இரு முகங்கள்.
ஒரு முகம் பின்னோக்கிப் பார்ப்பதுபோலவும், மற்றொரு
முகம் முன்னோக்கிப் பார்ப்பது போலவும் அமைந்திருக்கும். முடிவுற்ற ஆண்டைப் பின்னோக்கிப்
பார்க்கவும், புலரவிருக்கும் புத்தாண்டை
முன்னோக்கிப் பார்க்கவும் ‘ஜானுஸ்’ தெய்வம் நினைவுறுத்துவதால், ஆண்டின் முதல் மாதம் இந்தத் தெய்வத்தின்
பெயரைத் தாங்கியுள்ளது. பின்னோக்கியும், முன்னோக்கியும்
பார்ப்பதற்கு, ஊனக்கண்கள் மட்டும் போதாது, நம்பிக்கையுடன் கூடிய ஆன்மக்கண்களும் தேவை

நம்
சலிப்பையும், மனத்தளர்ச்சியையும் நீக்கும்
மருந்தாக, இந்த ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள், நம்பிக்கையைப் பற்றி பேசுகின்றன. பிள்ளைப்பேறின்றி
தவித்த ஆபிரகாமிடம், "வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார்.
முடியுமானால், விண்மீன்களை எண்ணிப்பார்.
இவற்றைப் போலவே உன் வழிமரபினரும் இருப்பர்" (தொ.நூ. 15:5) என்று, ஆண்டவர் வாக்களிக்கிறார்.
ஆபிராம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்
(தொ.நூ. 15:6) என்று முதல் வாசகம் வலியுறுத்திக் கூறுகிறது.
வயது
முதிர்ந்த காரணத்தால், உடலளவிலும், பிள்ளைப்பேறு இல்லையே என்ற ஏக்கத்தால், மனதளவிலும், தளர்ந்திருந்த ஆபிரகாமைக் குறித்து
எபிரேயருக்கு எழுதப்பட்ட திருமுகம் கூறும் சொற்களும் நம்பிக்கையைப் பற்றி வலியுறுத்துகின்றன:
ஆபிரகாம்
வயது முதியவராயும் சாரா கருவுற இயலாதவராயும் இருந்தபோதிலும், அவர் ஒரு தந்தையாவதற்கான
ஆற்றல் பெற்றதும் நம்பிக்கையினால்தான். ஏனெனில் வாக்களித்தவர் நம்பிக்கைக்குரியவர்
என அவர் கருதினார். இவ்வாறு, உயிரற்றவர் போலிருந்த இந்த ஒருவரிடமிருந்து வானத்திலுள்ள திரளான
விண்மீன்களைப் போலவும் கடற்கரையிலுள்ள எண்ணிறந்த மணலைப் போலவும் கணக்கற்ற மக்கள் பிறந்தனர்.

“இயலாது, முடியாது, நிகழாது, 'சான்ஸே’ இல்லை”, என்று, பலவாறாக, நம் உள்ளங்களை
நிரப்பும் நம்பிக்கையற்ற எண்ணங்கள்,

வாசகம் கூறுகிறது. அத்தகையதோர் அழைப்பு, நமக்கும் வழங்கப்படுகிறது, குறிப்பாக, ஆண்டின்
இறுதி நாளன்று. கடந்துசெல்லும் ஆண்டைக்குறித்து நம் நம்பிக்கையை வேரறுக்கும்வண்ணம்,
ஊடகங்கள் சொல்லும் எண்ணங்களால் உள்ளத்தை நிறைப்பதற்குப் பதில், இறைவன் நம்மை வெளியே வரச் சொல்கிறார்; வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார்க்கும்படி கூறுகிறார்.
ஆண்டின்
இறுதி நாளில் இருக்கும் நாம், பரந்து விரிந்த வானத்தின்
மீதும், பரந்த உள்ளம் கொண்ட நல்லவர்கள்
மீதும், நம் பார்வையைப் பதிக்க, இறைவன் நமக்கு சிறப்பான வரமருள செபிப்போம். பரந்து விரிந்த பார்வையையும், அதைப்
பேணிக்காக்கும் நம்பிக்கையையும் நம் அடுத்த தலைமுறையினருக்கு, குறிப்பாக,
குழந்தைகளுக்கு வழங்கும் வரத்திற்காகவும் நாம் இன்று செபிப்போம். நல்லவற்றை உள்ளத்தில்
பதிக்கும் ஒரு முயற்சியாகத்தான், ஆண்டின் இறுதி நாளன்று,
'இறைவா, உம்மைப் போற்றுகிறோம்' என்ற பொருள்படும், 'தே தேயும்' (Te
Deum) என்ற நன்றிப் பாடலைப்
பாடும்படி, தாய் திருஅவை நம்மை அழைக்கிறார்.
கிறிஸ்து
பிறப்புப் பெருவிழாவைத் தொடரும் ஞாயிறன்று, திருக்குடும்பத்
திருநாளைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். டிசம்பர் 31, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று சிறப்பிக்கப்படும் திருக்குடும்பத் திருவிழாவில்,
நமது நம்பிக்கை உணர்வுகளின் நாற்றங்காலாய் விளங்கும் குடும்பத்தை எண்ணிப்பார்க்க திருஅவை
நமக்கொரு வாய்ப்பை வழங்கியுள்ளது.
கிறிஸ்மஸ்
காலம் முழுவதுமே, மகிழ்வையும், நம்பிக்கையையும் பகிர்வது ஒரு முக்கிய குறிக்கோள்.
இருப்பினும், முதல் கிறிஸ்மஸ் காலத்தில், திருக்குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மரியா,
யோசேப்பு, குழந்தை இயேசு மகிழ்விலும், நம்பிக்கையிலும் வாழ வாய்ப்பின்றி
தவித்தனர். பச்சிளம் குழந்தைகளின் படுகொலை, எகிப்து நாட்டிற்கு இரவோடிரவாக ஓட
வேண்டியச் சூழல் என்று, அக்குடும்பத்தை வேதனைகள் தொடர்ந்தன. அன்பையும், மகிழ்வையும் கொணரவேண்டிய கிறிஸ்மஸ் காலத்தில் ஏன் இந்தக் கொடுமைகள்? என்ற கேள்வி அவர்களை அலைக்கழித்தது.
இன்று, உக்ரைன் மற்றும் புனித பூமியின் காசாப்பகுதியில் இரஷ்ய மற்றும் இஸ்ரேலிய
இராணுவங்களால் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான குடும்பங்கள் அழிக்கப்படுவதைப் பார்க்கும்போது, இதே கேள்வி நம் மனதை நிரப்புகின்றது. விளாடிமிர் புடின் மற்றும் பெஞ்சமின்
நெதன்யாகு ஆகிய இரு மதியற்ற தலைவர்களைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்தும் சக்தியின்றி உலகத் தலைவர்கள்
கைகட்டி நிற்பதைக் காண்கிறோம். இயேசு பிறந்தபோது, மதியற்ற மன்னன் ஏரோது மாசற்ற குழந்தைகளை கொன்ற வெறி, இன்று, இவ்விரு தலைவர்கள் வழியே தொடர்கிறது.
இவ்விரு தலைவர்களும் கொண்டிருக்கும் அதிகார வெறியால், எத்தனை ஆயிரம் குடும்பங்கள் சிதைந்துள்ளன? தலைவர்கள் ஒரு சிலரின் அதிகார வெறி, முதல் உலகப் போரைத் துவக்கியது என்பதை அறிவோம். அந்தப் போர்,
திருக்குடும்பத்
திருநாள் உருவாக ஒரு காரணமாக அமைந்தது.
பல
நூற்றாண்டுகளாக, தனிப்பட்ட ஒரு பக்தி முயற்சியாக, துறவற சபைகளால் வளர்க்கப்பட்டு வந்த
திருக்குடும்பத் திருநாளை, 1893ம் ஆண்டு, திருத்தந்தை 13ம் லியோ அவர்கள், திருஅவையின்
திருநாளாக அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். ஒரு சில ஆண்டுகளில், திருவழிபாட்டிலிருந்து நீக்கப்பட்ட
இத்திருநாள், 1921ம் ஆண்டு, திருத்தந்தை 11ம் பயஸ் அவர்களால், மீண்டும், திருவழிபாட்டின்
ஓர் அங்கமாக இணைக்கப்பட்டது. இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம், அப்போது நடந்து முடிந்திருந்த முதல் உலகப்போர்.
1918ல் நடந்து முடிந்த உலகப்போரில், ஆயிரமாயிரம் குடும்பங்கள் சிதைக்கப்பட்டன. வீட்டுத்
தலைவனையோ, மகனையோ, போரில் பலிகொடுத்த
பல குடும்பங்கள், ஆழ்ந்த துயரத்தில்,
அவநம்பிக்கையில்
மூழ்கியிருந்தன. இக்குடும்பங்களுக்கு ஆறுதலும், நம்பிக்கையும் தரும் வகையில், திருக்குடும்பத்
திருநாளை, மீண்டும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி,
குடும்பங்களில்
நம்பிக்கையைக் கட்டியெழுப்ப திருஅவை முயன்றது.
இரண்டாம்
வத்திக்கான் பொதுச்சங்கத்தின்போது மீண்டும் திருக்குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றிய எண்ணங்களைத்
திருஅவை புதுப்பித்தது. இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம், அன்றைய உலகின் நிலை. இரண்டாம் உலகப்
போரின் காரணமாக, கட்டடங்கள் சிதைந்தது உண்மைதான். ஆனால், அவற்றைவிட, குடும்பங்கள் அதிகமாகச் சிதைந்திருந்தன...
தொழில் மயமான உலகம், அறிவியல் முன்னேற்றங்கள்
என்று, பல வழிகளில் உலகம் முன்னேறியதைப் போலத் தெரிந்தது. ஆனால், அதேவேளை, குடும்பம் என்ற அடித்தளம், நிலைகுலைந்தது.
‘ஹிப்பி’ கலாச்சாரம், போதைப் பொருட்களின் பரவலான பயன்பாடு என்று,
மக்கள், வீட்டுக்கு வெளியே, நிம்மதியைத் தேடி
அலைந்தனர். அந்த அமைதியை, அன்பை, வீட்டுக்குள், குடும்பத்திற்குள்
தேடச்சொன்னது, திருஅவை. குடும்ப உணர்வுகளை வளர்க்கும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் பெருவிழாவுக்கு அடுத்துவரும்
ஞாயிறை, திருக்குடும்பத் திருநாளாக, திருஅவை அறிவித்தது.
உலகப்
போர்களாலும், உலகப் போக்குகளாலும் அழிவைத்
தேடி, இவ்வுலகம் சென்ற வேளையில், இந்த அழிவுகளை, கைகட்டி நின்று வேடிக்கை பார்ப்பதற்குப்
பதிலாக, எல்லாம் அழிந்தது என்று,
மனம் தளர்ந்து போவதற்குப் பதிலாக, மனித சமுதாயத்தை மீண்டும்
கட்டியெழுப்பும் முயற்சிகளுக்கு வழிகாட்டியது, கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவை. அந்த வழிகாட்டுதலின்
ஒரு பகுதிதான், நாம் இன்று கொண்டாடும்
திருக்குடும்பத் திருநாள்.
இயேசு, மரியா,
யோசேப்பு என்ற திருக்குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றி இப்போது பெருமையாக, புனிதமாக நாம் கொண்டாடி வருகிறோம். ஆனால், அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்த நேரத்தில் அக்குடும்பத்தைச் சுற்றி நிகழ்ந்தது எதுவும்,
புனிதமாக, பெருமை தருவதாக இல்லையே! பச்சிளம்
குழந்தை இயேசு பிறந்ததும், இரவோடிரவாக அவர்கள் வேறொரு நாட்டிற்கு அகதிகளாய் ஓட வேண்டியிருந்தது.
நாட்டிற்குள்ளும், அடுத்த நாடுகளுக்கும், இரவோடிரவாக ஓடும் அகதிகளின் நிலை, இன்றும் தொடரும் துயரம்தானே
பச்சிளம்
குழந்தை இயேசுவோடு, மரியாவும், யோசேப்பும் எகிப்துக்கு ஓடிப்போன நேரத்தில், அக்குழந்தையை அழித்துவிடும் வெறியில், ஏரோதின் அடியாட்கள் பல நூறு குழந்தைகளைக்
கொன்றனர். ஏரோதின் வாரிசுகளாக வரலாற்றில் தோன்றியுள்ள விளாடிமிர் புடின் மற்றும் பெஞ்சமின்
நெதன்யாகு போன்ற தலைவர்களின் சுயநல வெறிக்கு, குழந்தைகள் பலியாவது இன்றும் தொடரும் அவலம்தானே!
திருத்தந்தை
பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், கிறிஸ்து பிறப்புப் பெருவிழாவன்று, புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலய மேல்மாடத்திலிருந்து
