We come to this Sunday liturgy with a heavy and wounded heart. Our thoughts are with the 83 years old Jesuit Priest, Fr Stan Swamy, who is languishing in a prison in Mumbai, India. This is the first time such a senior person has been put behind bars. This shows that the ruthless Indian government would go to any length to choke the voices of those who speak the truth. We join with thousands praying for his speedy release.

The Church in Tamil Nadu is dedicating October 18, as ‘the Sunday for Stan’. The Bishops of Tamil Nadu have made a special request to all the people to celebrate the Sunday Mass for the special intention of the release of Fr Stan.

By coincidence, this Sunday we are offered the Gospel (Matthew 22:15-21) which speaks of the political efforts taken by the Pharisees to entangle Jesus. The opening lines of today’s Gospel passage is a typical ‘political statement’: “In those days, the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle him in his talk.” (Mt. 22:15) It is interesting to note that the Gospel passages on Sundays usually begin with the phrase, ‘In those days’ or ‘At that time’. In quite a few passages, we see a great similarity between what happened ‘in those days’, namely at the time of Jesus, and ‘in our days’, namely, what is happening around us today.

In those days, the Pharisee were trying to entangle Jesus in his talk. In our days, we have the recent event of the Indian government trying to implicate Fr Stan Swamy with an out-lawed group called the ‘Maoists’ and also to implicate him in the violent events that took place in Bhima Koregaon, Maharashtra, India in 2018. Fr Stan has denied any connection with both the allegations made by the government. The NIA – the National Investigation Agency, which is a puppet at the hands of the Central government – has been grilling Fr Stan for many long hours on these false charges. When they were not able to find sufficient evidence, they had inserted some files into the computer of Fr Stan when the agency had confiscated his computer and phone during this investigation. As a result of this ‘phony investigation’, Fr Stan was arrested on October 8.

Why is the Indian government so hell-bent on getting Fr Stan arrested and put behind bars? He has been a champion of the tribal people (Adivasis) living in Jharkhand. He has dedicated his life for the past 50 years among these people. He was helping the mostly illiterate tribal people, who were robbed of their lands by some ‘corporate’ sharks with the connivance of the present Indian government. Fr Stan tried to educate the Adivasis about their land rights and tried to organise them to fight for their rights.

Fr Stan was also aware of the police atrocities unleashed especially on the tribal youth. He saw innocent Adivasis languishing in jails on fabricated allegations. He helped conduct a research study on Left-wing undertrials in Jharkhand. The study found that of the 102 imprisoned youth they spoke with, as many as 97% that said allegations against them were wrong. The government had imposed the harshest law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on them without evidence. The large number of acquittals eventually vindicated the study. (Scroll.in)

The Indian government was keen to silence Fr Stan’s voice, since it was reaching far beyond Jharkhand and was in international circles. Its efforts resulted in the arrest of Fr Stan in his residence by the NIA personnel at night on October 8, without the arrest warrant. In India, arrests or ‘encounter-killings’ of terrorists and violent criminals by the police are usually carried out at night. To use such a cruel procedure against an octogenarian is quite shocking. 

Our minds go back to the arrest scene of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Evangelist Luke records these words spoken by Jesus: Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” (Luke 22:52-53)

The power of darkness in the form of the NIA was operative in the residence of Fr Stan on the night of October 8. Speaking of this inhuman arrest, Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, the auxiliary bishop of Ranchi, criticized the timing of the NIA action and echoed the words of Jesus:

“It is very sad that a premier investigating agency like the NIA could not find time during the day to interrogate such an elderly person who has always cooperated with the investigation. The timing of their arrival at the residence of the priest, after the sun has set and darkness has fallen, perhaps manifests the evil designs of those who are dealing with the case.” (UCAN)

Fr Stan had stated clearly that given his health condition (Parkinson’s, heart-related problems), as well as the pandemic when elderly persons are forbidden to go out, he was willing to cooperate with the enquiry via online. But the NIA dragged him from Ranchi all the way to Mumbai and shut him up behind bars.

It is a sad coincidence that Fr Stan was given the same treatment he was fighting against, namely, false and fabricated accusations under which many tribal youths had been arrested. By carrying out this blatant violence against all humane, civil norms, the Indian government as well as NIA have shown the world that they are above the law and anyone who tries to question them will have to face this treatment.

Just a few days before his arrest, sensing that anything can happen to him, Fr Stan recorded a video message that has been circulated widely. In this video, he says: "What is happening to me is not something unique happening to me alone. It is a broader process that is taking place all over the country… We are all aware how prominent intellectuals, lawyers, writers, poets, activists, students, leaders, they are all put into jail because they have expressed their dissent or raised questions about the ruling powers of India."  

We pray that Jesus, who had seen the ‘power of darkness’ operative during his life, stand by Fr Stan during this difficult time… not only with Fr Stan, but with all those who have been unjustly arrested and are languishing in prisons for their committed work towards the liberation of people.

On this special ‘Sunday with Stan’, we are presented with the Gospel passage which speaks of one of the political plots attempted against Jesus.

Matthew 22:15-21

In those days, the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle him in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God truthfully, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the money for the tax.” And they brought him a coin. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Today’s gospel passage reveals some of the traits of politicians all over the world. The first one: planning to trap someone in his/her words. As far as my idea of politics goes, this is probably the ONLY work done by most politicians. The very next sentence gives us a clue to another trait of politicians – striking a compromise to defeat a common enemy. It is also clear from these lines how political leaders act… namely, how they would depute emissaries in critical situations. In today’s gospel we see how the Pharisees sent their disciples along with the Herodians. Both Herod and the Pharisees themselves would not burn their fingers. They had had enough encounters with Jesus to have learnt how smart He was. Then, why risk one more time?

The Pharisees and the Herodians were usually sworn enemies. For the Pharisees, God was the supreme ruler and anyone who claimed divinity was an abomination. Caesar claimed divinity and hence, for the Pharisees he was an abomination. For the Herodians, Caesar was a saviour of sorts. Following their leader Herod, they were willing to serve Caesar.

These two groups belonging to two different enemy camps were willing to compromise their positions to thwart a common enemy – Jesus. For the Herodians, compromises were their ‘daily bread’ since they were proper politicians. But for the Pharisees? Well, for them too… since they were politicians in clerical garb and with clerical titles.

The way they talk to Jesus brings to light another aspect of politicians, namely, how they approach their enemy carrying a garland within which are hidden daggers. If politicians speak out their real thoughts and real intentions, they would be laughed at. Hence, almost by instinct, they lay their snares with sugar-coated words. Thus, the opening lines of today’s gospel give us quite a few thoughts on ‘dirty politics’.

The second part of today’s gospel gives us hope that politics can still be saved. Here we see the ‘good politics’ as practised by Jesus. Good politics begins by calling a spade, a spade. As against the sweet talk of the Pharisees and the Herodians, Jesus confronts them with their insincerity. Such courage has been found in the history of politics, but very rarely. Such courage was exhibited by Fr Stan Swamy and he is paying the price!

Coming to the core of today’s gospel, we are given one of the most famous lines spoken by Jesus. These words of Jesus have become one the most oft-quoted lines: “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” If only these words of Jesus are followed in all spheres of life, namely, give each one what is due to him or her, this world would automatically become heaven. We pray that Fr Stan, who is languishing in prison right now, will come out like a phoenix and continue his mission among the Adivasis, guiding them to their rightful heaven, their land!

The whole reflection may have sounded as venting my anger over politicians. But, as one of my fingers is pointed towards them, I need to be aware that three more are pointing towards me. Thus, I need to examine myself thrice over to see how many of the traits of ‘dirty-politics’ are present in my life and also to see how much of the ‘good politics’ I can put into practice.

“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” When Jesus told us to give back to Caesar his coins since they bore his image, in the same breath, He reminded us that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1: 26) and, therefore, we need to give ourselves back to God. In that sense, Caesar too needs to give himself back to God! Hope our politicians realize this truth sooner!

வேதனை நிறைந்த உள்ளத்துடன் இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வழிபாட்டில் இறைவனை நாடி வந்திருக்கிறோம். ஸ்டனிஸ்லாஸ் லூர்துசாமி என்கிற 83 வயது நிறைந்த இயேசு சபை அருள்பணியாளர் ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்கள், மும்பையில், சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். வயதில் மிக முதிர்ந்த ஒருவரை, சிறையில் அடைத்த அவலத்தை, இந்திய நடுவண் அரசு, முதல்முறையாக நடத்திக் காட்டியுள்ளது. அதுவும், ‘பார்கின்சன்ஸ்’ எனப்படும் நரம்புத்தளர்ச்சி நோய், இருதயம் தொடர்பான குறைபாடுகள் உட்பட, பல்வேறு உடல்நலக் குறைபாடுகளுள்ள அவரை, இந்தக் கொள்ளைநோய் காலத்தில், இராஞ்சியிலிருந்து மும்பைக்கு இழுத்துச்சென்று, அங்கு சிறையில் அடைத்திருப்பது, மனிதாபிமானமற்ற கொடுமை. இது, இந்திய நடுவண் அரசு, தனக்குத்தானே சூட்டிக்கொண்ட கேவலமான ஒரு மகுடம்.

எவ்வகையிலும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளமுடியாத இக்கொடுமையைப்பற்றி, இறைவனிடம் முறையிட வந்திருக்கிறோம். நாம் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள இந்த இறைவேண்டல் முயற்சியை, தமிழகத் திருஅவையுடன் இணைந்து மேற்கொள்கிறோம். அக்டோபர் 18, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, தமிழக ஆயர் பேரவை, அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்களுக்காகச் செபிக்கும்படி விடுத்துள்ள விண்ணப்பம் இதோ:

அக்டோபர் 18 ஞாயிறு, நாளை, 'ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரின் உரிமைக்காக உழைத்த தந்தை ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்களுக்கு, தமிழகத் திருஅவை தனது தோழமையை உறுதிப்படுத்தும் நாள்' என்று அனுசரிக்க உங்களை அழைக்கிறது. அன்று, நாம், ஒவ்வொரு பங்கிலும், தந்தை ஸ்டான் சுவாமியினுடைய உடல்நலத்திற்காகவும், விடுதலைக்காகவும், திருப்பலியை ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கவும், திருப்பலி முடிந்தவுடன், ஆலயத்திற்கு முன்பாகக் கூடி, தந்தை ஸ்டான் சுவாமியினுடைய கைதைக் கண்டித்து, அவரை உடனே விடுதலை செய்யச் சொல்லி கோரிக்கை வைத்து, பங்கு அளவிலான நிகழ்வை நடத்தவும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். மேலும், தொடர்ந்து, ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்கள் விடுதலை செய்யப்படும்வரை, அவரது விடுதலைக்காக, செப, தவங்களில் ஈடுபடவும், மனித நேயமிக்க மற்ற மக்களோடும், தோழமை அமைப்புகளோடும் இணைந்து, அமைதியான வழியில் போராடவும், வேண்டிக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

இறையரசின் விழுமியங்களில் ஒன்றான நீதியை இவ்வுலகில் நிலைநிறுத்த உழைத்துவந்த அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள்மீது நடத்தப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த அரசியல் சதியைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்கு உதவியாக உள்ளது. "அக்காலத்தில் பரிசேயர்கள் போய் எப்படி இயேசுவைப் பேச்சில் சிக்க வைக்கலாமெனச் சூழ்ச்சி செய்தார்கள்" (மத்தேயு 22:15) என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தி ஆரம்பமாகிறது. அக்காலத்தில் இயேசுவுக்கு நிகழ்ந்ததுபோலவே, இக்காலத்தில் அவரது பணியாளர் ஒருவருக்கு நிகழ்ந்துள்ளது. அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்களை பேச்சில் சிக்கவைப்பதற்கு, National Investigation Agency (NIA) எனப்படும் தேசியப் புலனாய்வு அமைப்பு, பல மாதங்களாக முயன்று வந்தது. இதுவரை நடைபெற்ற விசாரணைகள் அனைத்திலும், அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள்மீது எவ்வித குற்றத்தையும் சுமத்தமுடியவில்லை. ஆனால், விசாரணை என்ற பெயரில், அவரது கணணியைப் பறித்த NIA அமைப்பு, தீவிரவாதக் குழுக்களைப் பற்றிய தகவல்களை, அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியாமல், அந்தக் கணணிக்குள் புகுத்திவிட்டனர். எவ்வித குற்றமும் அற்ற வறியோர் பலரை காவல்துறையினர் கைது செய்வதற்கு உதவியாக, அவர்கள் இல்லங்களில் போதைப்பொருள்களை நுழைக்கும் கேவலமான யுக்தி நாம் அறிந்ததே. அதைப் போன்றதொரு முயற்சி, இங்கும் பின்பற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது. தற்போது, மாவோயிஸ்ட் தீவிரவாதக் குழுவுடன் அவருக்குத் தொடர்பு உள்ளதென்றும், 2018ம் ஆண்டு நடைபெற்ற Bhima-Koregaon வன்முறைகளைத் தூண்டிவிட்டதில் அவருக்கு தொடர்பு உண்டென்றும், அவர்மீது, பொய்க் குற்றங்கள் சுமத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இத்தனைக் கீழ்த்தரமான அரசியல் வேட்டைக்கு பலியாகும்வண்ணம், அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள் செய்தது என்ன? இந்திய நடுவண் அரசின் அத்துமீறிய அராஜகங்களை, குறிப்பாக, ஜார்க்கண்ட் மாநிலத்தில் வாழும் பழங்குடியின மக்கள்மீது அரசு கட்டவிழ்த்துவிட்டிருக்கும் வெறியாட்டத்தைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்த, அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள் உழைத்துவந்தார். பழங்குடியின மக்களுக்கென, அவர், கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகளாக, பல்வேறு வழிகளில் பாடுபட்டு வந்துள்ளார். எழுதப்படிக்கத் தெரியாத அந்த அப்பாவி மக்களின் உரிமைகளை அவர்களுக்கு உணர்த்திவந்தார்.

அண்மைய சில ஆண்டுகளாக, இந்திய நடுவண் அரசு, 'கார்ப்பரேட்' (Corporate) என்று சொல்லப்படும் பெருநிறுவனங்களின் செல்வந்தர்களுக்கு, இந்தியாவைக் கூறுபோட்டு விற்றுவருவதை நாம் அறிவோம். நடுவண் அரசும், பெருநிறுவனங்களும் இணைந்து, பழங்குடியினரின் உரிமைச்சொத்தான நிலங்களிலிருந்து அவர்களை விரட்டியடித்துவிட்டு, அந்த நிலங்களையும், இயற்கை வளங்களையும் கொள்ளையடித்து வருகின்றன. இந்தக் கொள்ளைக்கூட்டத்தின் அட்டூழியங்களுக்கு எதிராக, மக்களை, குறிப்பாக, இளையோரை ஒருங்கிணைத்து, சட்டப்படி அவர்களுக்கு உள்ள உரிமைகள் குறித்து விழிப்புணர்வையும், அந்த உரிமைகளைக் கோரி போராடும் வழிமுறைகளையும், அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள் வழங்கிவந்தார்.

ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பழங்குடியின இளைஞர்கள், தம் உரிமைகளுக்காகப் போராடிய வேளையில், அவர்களை 'நாக்சலைட்டுகள்' என்று முத்திரை குத்தி, எவ்வித வழக்கும் இன்றி, அவர்களை சிறையில் அடைத்தனர், காவல் துறையினர். வறுமைப்பிடியில் சிக்கித்தவித்த அவ்விளையோர், வழக்கறிஞர் வைத்து வாதாட முடியாத நிலையில், பல ஆண்டுகளாக சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இது தொடர்பாக ஆய்வுகளை மேற்கொண்ட அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள், அநியாயமாக சிறையில் வாடும் இளைஞர்களை விடுவிக்க, ஜார்க்கண்ட் மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள உயர்நீதிமன்றத்தில், பொதுநல வழக்கு ஒன்றை தாக்கல் செய்தார். அவர் தாக்கல் செய்த வழக்கின் அதிர்ச்சியூட்டும் விவரங்கள், உலகின் பல பகுதிகளில் உள்ள மனித உரிமை ஆர்வலர்களின் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்தன. இதனால் ஆத்திரம் அடைந்த இந்திய அரசு, அருள்பணியாளரைப் பழிவாங்கத் துடித்தது. தற்போது Bhima-Koregaon வழக்கில் அவரைத் தொடர்புபடுத்தி, தன் பழியைத் தீர்த்துக்கொண்டது.

கோவிட்-19 கொள்ளைநோய், இந்தியாவில், கட்டுப்பாடின்றி, மக்களை வதைத்துவரும் இவ்வேளையில், வயதில் முதிர்ந்தவர்கள் வெளியே செல்லக்கூடாது என்ற கட்டுப்பாடுகளை அரசு விதித்துள்ளதை நினைவுறுத்தி, எந்த விசாரணையையும் தான் தங்கியிருக்கும் இடத்திலேயே நடத்தும்படி, அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். வயதில் முதிர்ந்த அந்த அருள்பணியாளர் கூறிய எதையும் கேட்காமல், அக்டோபர் 8ம் தேதி இரவில், அவர் தங்கியிருந்த இல்லத்திற்கு, கைது செய்வதற்கான எந்த ஆணையும் இன்றி சென்ற NIA அமைப்பு, அவரை இரவோடிரவாக இழுத்துச்சென்றது

பொதுவாக, தீவிரவாதிகளையும், தொடர் கொலைகளைச் செய்துவரும் ‘தாதா’க்களையும் காவல்துறையினர் இரவோடிரவாக கைது செய்வதோ, 'என்கவுன்டர்' என்ற பெயரில் சுட்டுக்கொல்வதோ வழக்கம். 83 வயது நிறைந்த ஓர் அருள்பணியாளருக்கு, அத்தகைய ஒரு கொடுமை நிகழ்ந்திருப்பது, நம் நினைவுகளை, கெத்சமனி தோட்டத்திற்கு இட்டுச் செல்கின்றது. அங்கு, இரவில் செபித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த இயேசுவைப் பிடிக்கச்சென்ற கூட்டத்தினரிடம், அவர், "ஒரு கள்வனைப் பிடிக்க வருவதுபோல நீங்கள் வாள்களோடும், தடிகளோடும் வந்தது ஏன்? நான் நாள்தோறும் கோவிலில் உங்களோடு இருந்தும் நீங்கள் என்னைப் பிடிக்கவில்லையே. ஆனால் இது உங்களுடைய நேரம்; இப்போது இருள் அதிகாரம் செலுத்துகிறது" (லூக்கா 22:52-53) என்று கூறிய சொற்கள், நம் உள்ளங்களில் எதிரொலிக்கின்றன.

அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்கள் கைதுசெய்யப்பட்டதைக் குறித்துக் கேள்விப்பட்டதும், இராஞ்சி உயர்மறைமாவட்ட துணை ஆயர், தியடோர் மஸ்கரீனஸ் அவர்கள், இயேசு கூறிய இச்சொற்களை நினைவுறுத்தும் ஒரு கூற்றை வெளியிட்டார். “பல வழிகளில் உடல் நலன் குறைந்திருந்த 83 வயது நிறைந்த அருள்பணியாளரை, இந்தக் கொள்ளைநோய் காலத்தில், இவ்வாறு அழைத்துச் சென்றிருப்பது, மிகவும் கொடுமையானது. இதுவரை, காவல்துறையினரால் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட அனைத்து விசாரணைகளிலும், முழு ஒத்துழைப்பு கொடுத்துவந்த அருள்பணியாளர் ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்களை, தேசியப் புலனாய்வுத் துறை, இரவோடிரவாக அழைத்துச் சென்றிருப்பது, இந்த கைதின் பின்னணியில் இருப்போர் தீட்டிவந்த இருள்நிறை சதித்திட்டங்களை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது” என்று ஆயர் மஸ்கரீனஸ் அவர்கள் கூறியுள்ளார்.

அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் சுவாமி அவர்களை கைது செய்திருப்பதன் வழியே, இந்திய நடுவண் அரசு, பழங்குடியின மக்களுக்கு கடுமையான அச்சுறுத்தலை அளித்துள்ளது என்று, மனித உரிமை ஆர்வலரான இயேசு சபை அருள்பணி செட்ரிக் பிரகாஷ் அவர்கள் ஊடகங்களுக்கு அளித்த பேட்டி ஒன்றில் கூறியுள்ளார். பழங்குடியின மக்கள் தங்கள் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளுக்காகப் போராடுவதற்கு, அவர்களை வழிநடத்திவந்த அருள்பணி ஸ்டான் அவர்களுக்கே இந்த கதி என்றால், மக்களின் கதி என்ன ஆகும் என்பதை அவர்களுக்கு உணர்த்தவே, மனிதாபிமானமற்ற இந்த வன்முறையை, நடுவண் அரசு மேற்கொண்டுள்ளது என்று அருள்பணி பிரகாஷ் அவர்கள் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இயேசுவை பேச்சில் சிக்கவைத்து, அவரை வீழ்த்துவதற்கென்று, கருத்தளவில் எதிர் துருவங்களாய் இருக்கும், பரிசேயர்களும், ஏரோதியரும், கூட்டணி அமைத்தல் - இயேசுவை மனதார வெறுத்தவர்கள், அவரைப் புகழ்ந்து பேசிய வெளிவேடம் - "சீசருக்கு உரியவற்றை சீசருக்கும் கடவுளுக்கு உரியவற்றைக் கடவுளுக்கும் கொடுங்கள்" என்ற இயேசுவின் கூற்று - ஆகிய மூன்று எண்ணங்கள், நமக்குத் தேவையான வாழ்க்கைப் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தருகின்றன.

அரசியல் உலகில், நண்பர்கள், எதிரிகள் என்பவர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு தேர்தல் நேரத்திலும் மாறுபவர்கள் என்பதை, நாம், இந்தியாவிலும், இன்னும் பிற நாடுகளிலும், பார்த்து வருகிறோம். பாம்பும், கீரியும் போல, ஒருவரையொருவர் கடித்துக் குதற ஆசைப்படும் அரசியல்வாதிகள், தேர்தல் நேரத்தில், கூட்டணி அமைத்து, கரங்கள் கோர்த்து, மேடைகளில் தோன்றுவதைப் பார்த்து, நாம் பலமுறை வேதனையடைந்திருக்கிறோம். இப்படி ஒரு காட்சியை மீண்டும் நமக்கு நினைவுறுத்துகிறது, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி. ஏரோதியர்கள் முழுமையான அரசியல்வாதிகள். பரிசேயர்கள் தங்களை மதத்தலைவர்கள் என்று கருதுபவர்கள். இயேசுவை ஒழிக்கும் ஒரே நோக்கத்துடன், அரசியலும், மதமும் இணைந்து வருகின்றன.

அதிகாரத்தை, சுயநலத்தை காத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் எழும்போது, கொள்கைகளை மூட்டைகட்டி வைத்துவிடும் அரசியல் பச்சோந்திகளைப் போல், நாமும், வாழ்வில், அவ்வப்போது நிறம் மாறுகிறோமா என்ற கேள்வியை இன்று எழுப்புவது அவசியம். ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட ஆதாயத்திற்காக, உயர்ந்த கொள்கைகளை விட்டுக்கொடுத்த நேரங்கள், அல்லது உண்மையை மறுத்த நேரங்கள் எத்தனை, எத்தனை? குறிப்பிட்ட ஒருவரைப் பழிவாங்குவதற்காக, அல்லது அவரை வெல்வதற்காக, நம் மனசாட்சியை விலைபேசிய நேரங்கள் எத்தனை, எத்தனை? இக்கேள்விகளுக்கு உண்மையான விடைகள் தேடினால், நம் வாழ்விலும், அரசியல் அவலங்கள், எவ்வளவு தூரம் ஊடுருவியுள்ளது என்பதும், அந்த அவலங்களை எவ்விதம் களைவது என்பதும், தெளிவாகும்.

கொள்கைகளைப் புறந்தள்ளிவிட்டு, கூட்டணி சேர்ந்து வரும் பரிசேயர்கள் மற்றும் ஏரோதியர்களுடன் இயேசு மேற்கொண்ட உரையாடல், நமக்கு அடுத்தப் பாடம். நேர்மையுடன் செயல்பட முடியாத பரிசேயர்களும் ஏரோதியர்களும் உள்ளொன்று வைத்து புறமொன்று பேசும் போலி வார்த்தைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தினர். இதற்கு முற்றிலும் மாறாக, இயேசு நேரடியாகவே பேசினார். அவர்களை, 'வெளிவேடக்காரரே' என்று அழைத்து, அவர்களைப்பற்றிய உண்மைகளை தோலுரித்துக் காட்டினார்.

சீசருக்கு வரி செலுத்துவது பற்றி எழுப்பப்பட்ட கேள்விக்கு, “சீசருக்கு உரியவற்றை சீசருக்கும் கடவுளுக்கு உரியவற்றைக் கடவுளுக்கும் கொடுங்கள்” (மத்தேயு 22:21) என்ற புகழ்பெற்ற வரிகளை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் சொல்கிறார் இயேசு. விவிலியம், கிறிஸ்தவம் என்ற எல்லைகளைத் தாண்டி, பொருளாதாரம், அரசியல் என்ற பலச் சூழல்களில் மேற்கோளாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற வாக்கியம் இது.
