Buried grain – manifold grains

A grain of wheat must die…

5th Sunday of Lent

Of the four seasons of the year, Spring is labelled as the season of hope, since the apparently dormant life in winter, buried under the snow, springs back to life. The weather experts (cf. AccuWeather) have designated March 19, Tuesday, the Feast of St Joseph, as the official first day of spring for 2024. This date marks the vernal equinox. The weather experts have even announced the exact time of the equinox as 11:06 P.M. EDT – Eastern Daylight Time. This is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather experts seem to use the same vocabulary that is used for the arrival of a train or an aircraft. But, we know that the spring season does not spring up at the given hour. It has had a long gestation period under the blanket of snow and slowly (not abruptly) paints the world in multi-coloured leaves and flowers.

Our generation, accustomed to ‘instant’ and ‘ready-made’ products, does not have the patience to see this slow, imperceptible change that takes place in nature. Humankind will be a lot wiser if we learn to live with and learn from the cycles of nature, rather than try to portray them as machines that bring about changes at the touch of a button!

For us, Christians, spring season began along with Lenten Season. On the First Sunday of Lent, we spoke about Lent and the Spring Season. Today, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we are back to this theme. To add more relevance to this theme of hopeful changes that mark Lent and Spring, today’s Gospel brings us one of the famous sayings of Jesus about the ‘grain of wheat’.
Last week we reflected on one of the most famous quotes from the Bible known as the ‘gospel of all the gospels’, namely, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3: 16) Today we have another equally famous quote from John’s gospel, namely, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12: 24)

Both these verses from John’s gospel have been used as independent quotes without much reference to the context in which Jesus spoke these words. In fact, the whole of John’s gospel is considered more of a theological treatise rather than a historical narration. Hence most of the verses from this gospel can be used as independent quotes without much reference to the context. Still, it would be helpful to reflect on what prompted Jesus to say the words we hear in today’s Gospel.

The opening lines of today’s gospel (John 12:20-33) give us the context in which Jesus spoke the famous ‘parable’ of the grain of wheat. Here are the opening lines: Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So, these came to Philip … and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." (John 12: 20-21)
Philip, along with Andrew, approach Jesus and tell him about the desire of the Greeks. In response to the representation made by Philip and Andrew, Jesus says: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.” (John 12:23-25)
The response of Jesus seems very disconnected to the request of the Greeks, wishing to see Him. Since the Greeks must have come seeking some spiritual wisdom from Jesus, he could have easily spoken to those foreigners a great parable. After all, he was known as a master story teller. Instead, he talks about his death, using the parable of ‘the grain of wheat’. Why did the Greeks come to see Jesus? Why did Jesus speak about his death, through the parable of the grain of wheat?

The answers to these questions are given by Fr Munachi Ezeogu, a Roman Catholic Priest from Nigeria and a Scripture scholar. In his homily on today’s gospel passage, he has interpreted that the Greeks came to see Jesus since they were concerned about the safety of Jesus in Jerusalem and wanted to take him away to their country and hence, Jesus spoke about his impending death. This explanation seems quite plausible, and I wish to share Fr Ezeogu’s views here:
The Greek philosopher Socrates is regarded as one of the wisest men of all time. This man… devoted his life to exposing ignorance, hypocrisy and conceit among his fellow Athenians and calling them to a radical re-examination of life… But those in power arrested him, tried him and sentenced him to death… Subsequent generations of Greeks came to regard Socrates as a martyr for truth. They resolved never again to persecute anyone on account of their beliefs.

By the time of Jesus, the Greeks had become among the most broad-minded people in the world. Various religious and philosophical traditions flourished among them and vied for popularity. We see in today's gospel that among the huge crowds that had come to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, were some Greeks. It did not take these Greeks long to see that all was not well in Jerusalem. So, they came to see Jesus. Why did they come to see Jesus? Although John has somewhat spiritualised the story, thereby giving the impression that they came to seek admission into the "body" of Christ (cf. John 12:32), it is more probable that they came to alert Jesus of the seriousness of the danger surrounding him and to suggest to him to flee with them to Greece, the land of freedom. The response that Jesus gives to their request shows that it has to do with his impending death and that he has chosen to stay and face it rather than seek a way to escape it.

If the Greeks, in their short stay in Jerusalem for the Passover festival, could pick up the dangerous plots that were brewing, Jesus would have also sensed them. But He chooses to stay on and face the consequences. He begins his response with the famous line: “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.”
Thrice in John’s gospel we see the line ‘the hour has NOT yet come’. The first time was in the wedding at Cana: When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come." (John 2: 3-4) On two more occasions during the public ministry of Jesus the phrase ‘his hour had not yet come’ is used. (cf. John 7:30; 8:20). Now Jesus declares that the hour has come… The hour for what? The hour to become a life-giving seed by sacrificing life.

The purpose of the grain of wheat is twofold – either it can be ground into a flour to become food, or, buried in the ground and yield manifold grains. The imagery of the seed falling to the ground and, thus, becoming a life-giving source, has inspired millions of Christians to become life-giving seeds. One among them is St Ignatius of Antioch. Legend says that as Bishop Ignatius was led to the Colosseum to be thrown among the lions, he said: “I am God's wheat, ground fine by the lion's teeth to be made purest bread for Christ.”

Down the centuries, the courage and determination shown by Jesus and his followers have rubbed off on so many noble and courageous souls. One of the recent examples is Mr Alexei Navalny who was killed on February 16 by Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. We think of Mr Navalny especially today, March 17, when ‘fake elections’ are being conducted in Russia in which Putin is seeking his fifth term as president of Russia.

After the burial of Mr Navalny on March 1, his wife Yulia Navalnaya made a special appeal to the supporters of Mr Navalny to line up at the polling booths on March 17. Knowing full well that no protest can stop Putin from becoming the President once again, Ms Navalnaya has made this appeal with the fond hope that the grain of wheat – her husband – will yield rich harvest. Here are some excerpts from the news story that appeared on March 6 on ‘the Guardian’ about the call of Ms Navalnaya:
The widow of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has called for people to protest against Vladimir Putin at polling booths in the forthcoming presidential election. Yulia Navalnaya urged her supporters to protest against Putin by voting en masse at noon local time in the 17 March election, forming large crowds and overwhelming polling stations.
She said the action would also be a way to honour her late husband, who came up with the idea in one of his last public messages before his sudden death in an Arctic prison. “I want to do what he thought was right,” Navalnaya said in a video published on Wednesday (March 6) on YouTube. “There are many people around you who are anti-Putin and anti-war, and if we come at the same time, our anti-Putin voice will be much louder.”

The polling protest has been labelled “midday against Putin”... Navalnaya called on her supporters to vote for “any candidate except Putin”. She said: “You can ruin the ballot, you can write ‘Navalny’ in big letters on it. And even if you don’t see the point in voting at all, you can just come and stand at the polling station and then turn around and go home.”
Navalnaya, who is hoping to take over her husband’s mantle as leader of the Russian opposition, also said she had drawn hope from the tens of thousands that turned out last week for the funeral of her husband. She said: “Looking at you, I am convinced that everything is not in vain, and this thought gives me strength. Now you all know that there are actually a lot of us, all those who love and support Alexei, who share his ideas and as long as we have each other, it’s not over.” According to a count by the Russian independent outlet Mediazona, at least 27,000 people came to say farewell to Navalny at Borisovsky cemetery on the outskirts of Moscow.

The death of Mr Navalny, if it brings out his supporters to the polling booths this Sunday, will be a true testimony of what Jesus had predicted in today’s Gospel: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.”
Let us hope and pray that the supporters of Alexei Navalny can come together and help the people to hope that democracy is possible in Russia.

We can surely think of this event as an inspiration for us, Indians, to line up at the polling booths once elections dates are announced. We need to root out the weeds that have taken root in our Parliament and replace them with healthy grains of wheat that will, hopefully, restore democracy in India.

Death that brings life

(I am God's wheat, ground fine by the lion's teeth to be made purest bread for Christ.)

Called to win over darkness

For God so loved the world…

4th Sunday of Lent – Laetare Sunday

Every year, we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Lent as ‘Laetare Sunday’ – Rejoicing Sunday. The Latin word ‘Laetare’ is taken from the Entrance antiphon of today’s Mass, from Isaiah: “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her” (Is. 66:10). What we have seen and heard from October 7, 2023, via the mainstream media, about the present situation in Jerusalem and, more painfully, in Gaza, does not permit us to say: ‘Rejoice with Jerusalem’.

Down the centuries, Jerusalem and the Holy Land have seen many calamities one after another. One such calamity is spoken of in the First Reading today taken from the Second Book of Chronicles - 2 Chr. 36:14-16, 19-23. “Their enemies burnt the house of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, set all its palaces afire, and destroyed all its precious objects. Those who escaped the sword were carried captive to Babylon…” (2 Chr. 36:19-20).
But the First Reading does not end on this note of destruction and despair. Here are the closing verses of hope about the rebuilding of Jerusalem: “Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me, and he has also charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!” (2 Chr. 36:23)

At present, the mainstream media constantly bombards us with images and news stories of destruction orchestrated by the power-crazy Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. On the other hand, we also know that there are thousands of individuals, from Israel and Palestine who wish to put an end to the agony in the Holy Land. The news and views of these individuals do not get the attention of the mainstream media. When we are invited by the liturgy of this Sunday to ‘rejoice with Jerusalem’, we shall devote at least a few moments to reflect on hope-filled news coming from the Holy Land. One such news appeared on February 26, 2024, in the monthly Catholic magazine ‘America’, run by the Jesuits of the United States. The title of the news article itself gives us reason to rejoice: ‘We can live together’: A Palestinian doctor and political activist on Gaza, a ceasefire and the future of Israel-Palestine.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, a 70-year-old physician and Palestinian political activist, committed to nonviolence, has given an interview to ‘America’ magazine in which he reiterates how the problem of Israel-Palestine can and must be resolved in a nonviolent way. Speaking about the war in Gaza, Dr. Barghouti said that he wanted an immediate ceasefire and, after that, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state or “one democratic state” with equal rights for both Israelis and Palestinians. The idea of one democratic state is not new; it has been discussed in academic and political circles over the last 20 years; but since this idea is not advantageous to power-crazy politicians, it has not been pursued or made public. Notwithstanding the conflict and widespread hate today, Dr. Barghouti is convinced “we [Palestinians and Israeli Jews] can live together.”

Dr. Barghouti was born in Jerusalem and lives in Ramallah, the administrative centre of the Palestinian state. He founded the Palestinian Medical Relief Society and is the president of the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, a nongovernmental organization that provides health care and community services to people in the occupied territories, including Gaza. He confirmed in the interview his commitment to nonviolence, just as he did in another interview: “I will never depart from this belief (of nonviolence). I never changed my mind, even when the Israeli army shot me while I was treating an injured person in my white coat as a doctor. And I still carry the 35 shrapnel (small pieces of metal that fly around when a bomb explodes) in my back. But that didn’t change my mind or opinion that nonviolence is the best way. I believe in that, and I practice that.” He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.

We know for sure that there are thousands of peace-loving persons like Dr. Barghouti living in Israel and Palestine. But, their ideas do not spread far and wide. Hence, on ‘Laetare Sunday’, we wish to bring these rare flashes of hope and celebrate them in our liturgy. We need to believe that this world is still filled with good willed persons who work for reconciliation and forgiveness.

Reconciliation and forgiveness are two key concepts of the Season of Lent. To highlight these concepts as well as to celebrate the ‘Rejoicing Sunday’ meaningfully, Pope Francis suggested a ‘feast of forgiveness’ in 2014. For the past ten years we have been celebrating this ‘Feast of Forgiveness’ on the eve of the 4th Sunday of Lent. The main event of this feast is the ’24 Hours for the Lord’, in which the churches around the world are kept open for 24 hours and priests are available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. "Walk in newness of life" (Rom 6:4) is the theme chosen by Pope Francis for this year's celebration of reconciliation and forgiveness.

Close on the heels of this meaningful Feast of Forgiveness and Reconciliation, we are given the opportunity to reflect on how ‘God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ’ (2 Cor. 5:19). The reconciliation of the world in Christ was brought about by the total immersion of Jesus in the human race. We call this immersion – the Incarnation. In today’s Gospel (John 3: 14-21), we hear the famous verse talking about Incarnation: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3: 16) This is probably the best loved verse in the Bible. It tells us that the initiative in salvation is God’s love for man.

As we are meditating on the deeply theological expression ‘God-so-loved-the-world’, we shall set aside some moments today and in the coming days during this Lenten Season to think of the continuous, but unrecognized love stories we experience in our own families. Most of us know many families where the parent, the life-partner, a sibling is taking care of persons who cannot take care of themselves. This is not just a one-day, one month love-affair… But a year-long affair… for ten, twenty, thirty, forty and more years… Let us salute these silent stalwarts of true love and dedication who will not adorn any mainstream media or history book.

As we are reflecting on love, we cannot but think of the twisted, topsy-turvy definitions and images created by the commercial world around the word ‘love’. These misleading definitions put out the light of true love and mislead the world, especially the younger generation to get cozy with darkness. In the second half of today’s gospel, we hear Jesus talking about how people get accustomed to darkness and feel uncomfortable with light: “The light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (John 3: 19-20)

There is a funny story to drive home the point as to how darkness can become so ‘comfortable’ to us that we are willing to stay in the dark. This is the story of a desert nomad who woke up hungry in the middle of the night. He lit a candle and began eating dates from a bowl beside his bed. He took a bite from one and saw a worm in it; so, he threw it out of the tent. He took the second date, brought it close to the candle and found another worm, and threw it away also. It was the same with the third one too. Reasoning that he wouldn't have any dates left to eat, if he continued to look for worms, he blew out the candle and quickly ate the rest of the dates!
Putting out the light of true conscience, we can swallow worm-infested ideas and still feel comfortable… On the other hand, we can enjoy the light as per the invitation of Jesus in the last line of today’s Gospel: But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. (John 2:21)

The contrasting concepts of ‘darkness and light’ have inspired many noble persons to leave for the posterity some inspiring statements. Fyodor Dostoevsky, the renowned Russian author, in his novel “Crime and Punishment” published in 1866 says: “The darker the night, the brighter the stars.” This statement reminds us to seek out the positive aspects even when surrounded by darkness, and to appreciate the small moments of joy and inspiration.

Martin Luther King Jr., brought out the first volume of sermons with the title ‘Strength to Love’ in the year 1963. This book remains a concrete testament to King’s lifelong commitment to preach the ‘social gospel’. One of the famous statements in this book goes like this: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

With the overload of evil forces constantly submerging our minds and hearts in darkness, we are called to become agents of light and hope. Are we willing to come to Christ the Light of the World, in order to become sparks of that light? Are we willing to light a candle, become a candle ourselves to dispel the darkness? Or, are we comfortable staying in despair and cursing the darkness that surrounds us? Lenten season invites us to take up these crucial, life-changing questions and answer them honestly.

The light has come into the world

இந்த வாக்கியம் "நற்செய்திகளின் நற்செய்தி" (Gospel of the gospels) என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

ஃபியோடோர் தொஸ்தோவ்ஸ்கி (Fyodor Dostoevsky) என்ற இரஷ்ய எழுத்தாளர், 1866ம் ஆண்டு  வெளியிட்ட 'குற்றமும் தண்டனையும்' (Crime and Punishment) என்ற நெடுங்கதையில், "இரவு நேரத்தில், எவ்வளவுக்கெவ்வளவு இருள் மண்டிக்கிடக்கிறதோ, அவ்வளவுக்கவ்வளவு விண்மீன்கள் இன்னும் கூடுதலாக ஒளிவீசுகின்றன" (“The darker the night, the brighter the stars.”)

(“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”)
