Comforting Style of the Shepherd...

The Good Shepherd

Discipline without love is dangerous and love without discipline is equally dangerous. The right combination is what shapes a human person. When we grow up, we probably experience discipline from our parents and teachers. At that time we feel angry and rebel against it. It is because we cannot see the love that prompted that discipline. But as time goes on, we realise the love behind the discipline. Time, as all of us know, is a good teacher.

As we approach the end of another calendar year (Gregorian) we do reflect on time - time that was placed at our disposal throughout this year. All media channels are competing with one another to review 2010. Whether we review our personal life or the world events, painful memories come to mind first in our ‘rewind’. Pain leaves deep and lasting impressions on us. Though we talk of pain many times, we are still left with questions. For the past six months we have been reflecting of Psalm 23 with quite a few reflections on pain. For his book on Psalm 23, Harold Kushner has given the main title as ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’. He has also added a subtitle to this book: ‘Healing Wisdom of the Twenty Third Psalm’.

Many of us know that the book that turned the spot light on Harold Kushner was the famous bestseller ‘When Bad Things Happen to Good People’. This book was written by Kushner after he was crushed by the pain of losing his son Aaron at the age of 14 through a rare disease - progeria. Many of Kushner’s friends had suggested to him that he write another book with the title: ‘When Good Things Happen to Bad People.’ This is more than a suggestion. This is actually a question. In fact, both the titles are questions that bother us while we are in pain. We question the wisdom of God who ‘allows’ pain in the lives of innocent, good people. As we mentioned in our last reflection, we try to find answers to this question, saying, that through pain God is either punishing us for our misdeeds or testing our faith.

But the question on bad people enjoying life is an angry question. We are unable to search for answers here since our anger clouds our mind – the anger of seeing bad people thrive. On deeper analysis, we can raise few more questions and try to answer them. Are there really ‘bad people’? If so, do they really enjoy goodness? All the good that we see around this group is very external – their wealth, fame, glamour etc. But a deeper analysis would surely tell us that behind that façade live tormented souls. A simple question: How many of these so called bad people enjoy a good night’s rest without the help of tablets or alcohol? When these people retire to bed, they drag along with them their tired body as well as a tried and tortured soul. When the body craves for rest, their conscience seems to be awake, raising quite a few disturbing questions. As they had silenced this conscience through the day, they try to silence it once again through drugs and drinks. Can we really say that ‘good things happen to bad people’?

The Shepherd’s rod and staff take the form of our conscience. This is the best compass that the Lord has given to each of us. As long as this compass is not damaged, we can lead a decent life, steering our lives through utter darkness. The Shepherd’s rod and staff will comfort us.

As I had mentioned in my last reflection, the word ‘comfort’ seems out of place in this line. But, if we look at the root meaning of the word comfort, it springs from the word ‘fortis’ meaning strength. Hence com-fort would mean ‘with strength’ or ‘giving strength’. When I look at the word comfort from this perspective, I am reminded of some medical treatments that give us strength. I am not an expert in medicines. What I am sharing here is very much bits-and-pieces-information on some medical methods.

When a person suffers from headache, one style of treatment would treat the symptom; give a pill that would arrest the headache; make it subside fast. We have tablets that give us instant relief. There is also another method of treatment for headache, where instead of treating the symptom, the root cause of our headache is traced. It could probably be a disorder in the stomach or it could be a defect in the eyes. When the root is found, then treatment is given to take care of the root cause. Here the relief may not be instantaneous; but the treatment would have lasting effect. Sometimes in order to trace the real cause of headache, there could be a treatment that triggers more headache in order to locate the real problem and then treat it.

When I think of the rod and staff of the Shepherd, I am reminded of the second method of treatment. God’s style of dealing with us may leave us in more pain, so that we are ‘com-forted’ strengthened! Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me!

“Healing Wisdom of the Twenty Third Psalm” அதாவது, "மனக்காயங்களை ஆற்ற திருப்பாடல் 23 தரும் ஞானம்."

Harold Kushnerஐ மிகவும் புகழ்பெற்ற எழுத்தாளராக உலகிற்கு அறிமுகம் செய்த ஒரு நூல் “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” அதாவது, "நல்லவர்களுக்குப் பொல்லாதவைகள் நிகழும்போது" என்ற நூல்.
"நல்லவர்களுக்குப் பொல்லாதவைகள் நிகழும்போது" என்பதைச் சிந்தித்த Harold Kushner "போல்லாதவர்களுக்கு நல்லவைகள் நிகழும்போது" - When Good Things Happen to Bad People - என்பதையும் ஒரு புத்தகமாக எழுத வேண்டும் என்பதே அவர்களது வேண்டுகோள்.

Feast of the Holy Family

http://new.catholicmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/12_28_08_holy_family.jpg

Norman Vincent Peale, a great preacher and the author of many inspiring books, including the famous ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ reflects on Christmas in these words: "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."
But this softer and more beautiful world turned into a tragic mess in most countries in Asia exactly one day after Christmas on December 26, 2004. It was six years back when Christmas came on a Saturday and the next day December 26 was a Sunday, the Feast of the Holy Family, exactly as it is this year. So, naturally our minds go back to this painful tragedy that challenged our faith and our spirit of Christmas. The tsunami that occurred on December 26th, the Feast of the Holy Family, left thousands and thousands of families completely or partially uprooted.
If a family was uprooted fully, it looked like a blessing, since all the members of the family were gone and no painful memories lingered. But there were thousands of other families where the tsunami had taken away some members while the rest were left in agony and despair. On the Feast of the Holy Family why should this happen? Is there anything soft or beautiful about the Christmas Season of 2004? Those were the questions left with us.

Nothing soft and nothing beautiful about the tsunami in 2004 one would tend to say. But, wait… In the days and months and even years that followed, many soft and beautiful things did happen. They are still happening. Among the various incidents that I have read, one incident is etched deep in my mind and heart – the incident about Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. Here is an extract from the Hindu:

SEA OF LOVE: The tsunami-affected couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam, with their adopted children.
DINDIGUL : Even as tsunami `swallowed' all their three children and washed away their happiness once and for all, it could not wipe out humanism and confidence from the minds of the couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. The couple, suffering from irrevocable loss, adopted 16 child survivors of tsunami aged between three and 14 years.
Mr. Parameswaran's emotion-soaked outpouring of reactions moved a huge gathering. "It happened on my birthday," said Mr. Parameswaran. “First, my last son saw a giant wave, higher than many trees. I alerted my son to run. I could see my kid's two little legs moving at pace. In a few seconds, I could see thousands of bodies floating in water. I lost all my three children, my father and mother and 10 of my relatives from Karnataka”, he recalled.
"We have crores of rupees, but did not have a piece of cloth to cover my children's bodies before burial. With confidence instilled by my wife, we went to a fishermen hamlet near coastline the next day where many destitute children were roaming without parents. I have a bungalow without children. They have no parents and house. We brought four children home for providing shelter. Later, the number rose to 16," he said.

The tsunami plucked away three children of Parameswaran and Sudamani. But at the same time, it had planted many more children in their family. When we think of the Holy Family, we are also painfully aware that the incidents that happened around this family were not holy in any sense. They were asked to run for their life over night. The children in Bethlehem were massacred. Still, the Holy Family survived and this family opened its heart to include the whole human family. In this sense, we can say with some assurance: "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."

Many great thinkers are of the opinion that Christmas is not only restricted to December 25th but that it can be kept alive all through the year. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States said: "Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be generous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

‘Santa’s gift’ cheers tsunami couple
Nagapattinam, Dec. 22: This Christmas is special for Mr Parameswaran whose house now echoes with the voices of the 18 children he adopted after losing all three of his own children to the tsunami which struck the coast on December 26, 2004. Mr Parameswaran, who had found solace in these children either orphaned by the tsunami or with just one parent left after the disaster, has now been blessed with a child of his own.
Three-month-old Shamiah meaning “God’s answer to prayers”, is the best gift by Santa, say Mr Parameswaran and his wife Choodamani. The couple said that the birth of their child was met with a mixture of joy and worry by the rest of the children. “Some of the children wanted a girl, others a boy. When the baby was born our youngest daughter, two-year-old Priya came and asked me whether she will lose her room because of the baby. Apparently, she got this idea from her brothers who were teasing her.
We assured her that she would not. This child is the luckiest in the world. He has 18 loving brothers and sisters,” Mr Parameswaran, an employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation said. For the couple, the birth of Shamaiah has made their family complete. Kept busy in raising a battalion of 18 children, Ms Choodamani said it was the joy which these children brought them that had now given them Shamiah. “The children filled our empty home with their laughter and cries. Now the arrival of this child has washed away the wounds left by the disaster. There is no time even to think of the past,” she said. The baby has not changed the routine of the other children. “Half yearly exams are going on now. So we are not allowed to go near the baby as much as we want to. Once the Christmas holidays start then we will have more time to play with him,” said twelve-year-old Juniya.

Thy Rod and Thy Staff…

The closing words of verse 4 of Psalm 23 are taken for our reflection today. “Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” When I read this line, I felt that the word ‘comfort’ was out of place there. “Thy rod and thy staff, they chastise me,” sounded more logical. Having been brought up in a generation where ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ was almost a formula, I am inclined to think in this line.
Corporeal punishment is anathema now. Children and students who receive corporeal punishment can go to court against teachers and even against parents. Last week a catholic news website reported of a 9th standard boy hitting the principal of a catholic school. This was quite shocking for me. It happened in Kolkatta where a school function was in progress. The principal seemed to have hit the boy for some reason and the boy retaliated in front of the whole school. I was wondering whether such an incident would have happened when I was doing school. Perhaps they did happen. But, such incidents did not receive media attention. If a legal process were to be pursued in this Kolkatta incident, probably the principal would stand accused more than the student. Corporeal punishment is a no-no now. In such an ambience, my preoccupation is: how do I understand this line from Psalm 23 and how do I share my thoughts. Still, let me venture into this.

In the last few weeks we have seen a few salient features of verse 4 of Psalm 23. This verse is the centre of the Psalm; in this verse the Shepherd becomes a first person to the psalmist etc. There is another feature in the following verses. From verse 5 till the end of the psalm, the author talks of all the blessings he would be receiving from the Shepherd. This list of blessings stands in stark contrast to the valley of darkness and death the psalmist was talking about in verse 4. I feel that the last line of verse 4 serves as a portal to all the blessings that follow. If we are ‘comforted’ by the rod and staff of the Shepherd, then there will be a feast laid out, oil of gladness, overflowing cup, and everlasting life in God’s own house. This portal is a narrow door (similar to the one mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 7: 13-14) and hence requires lot of humility to understand how the Shepherd’s rod and staff will comfort us.

The author of the psalm was either a shepherd himself or one who knew quite a lot about shepherds. Hence, when he talks of the rod and staff of a shepherd, he has quite a few thoughts attached to these symbols. “The shepherd used his staff not only to lean on as he walked, but to help straying or fallen sheep climb out of the pits they may have stumbled into…He used his rod to discipline stubborn sheep that got out of line and wandered into danger. The staff was a symbol of help and support, the rod a symbol of discipline and punishment.
The image of God striking people with His rod, using it to punish even those whom He loves, is common in the Bible. God’s word to the prophet Isaiah (10:5) warns Israel that ‘I will send Assyria, the rod of My anger, against an ungodly people.’… God promises the aging King David that He will bless his son Solomon with His favour but will demand righteous behaviour from him: ‘I will be a father to him. When he does wrong, I will chastise him with the rod’ (II Samuel 7: 14). And perhaps the most familiar reference to the use of the rod to discipline even those whom we love is found in the Book of Proverbs (13:24), ‘He who spares the rod hates his son.’”
(Harold Kushner)

It is very significant that the psalmist thinks of the rod and the staff while walking through the valley of death. During our reflections on this Psalm, we have spoken very often about how we raise quite many questions on God when we are in pain. Not only do we raise questions, but we give some answers too. One such answer during painful moments is that God is punishing us through this pain. The other answer is that God is testing or strengthening our faith through pain. These are good thoughts in themselves. But, I am afraid that we bring in God too readily into our painful situations. For instance, when a child trips and falls on the ground since she ran very fast, it is our duty to make her understand that there are limits to her speed. Instead, we easily say: “You ran fast without listening to me. Now, you see, God has made you fall.” The fear of God may be the beginning of wisdom. But, this way of feeding the fear of God is rather warped! This way of positing God, we think, is an easier way to control the child. But, we should also think about what type of God we are imprinting on the child’s consciousness.
Such easy interpretations are given even in very grave matters like natural disasters. We may be aware that Graham Stein and his two children were burnt alive while they were asleep in a jeep in Orissa. This happened in January 1999. That same year in October there were cyclone and tidal waves in Orissa that took away 10,000 lives. I had heard pastors and priests linking these two isolated events and saying that the tidal waves and cyclone were God’s way of punishing the people of Orissa… A totally unacceptable way of interpreting the natural disaster in Orissa. The care and concern as well as the chastisement of God are symbolised in the rod and the staff of the Shepherd. Let us continue our search on these two symbols of the Shepherd.

'கோலெடுத்தால் குரங்காடும்' என்று தமிழிலும் ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’ அதாவது, 'கோலைப் பயன்படுத்தத் தவறினால், குழந்தையைப் பயனில்லாமல் ஆக்கி விடுவாய்.'

St Joseph, Patron of Dreams

Last Sunday, we heard Jesus paying a great compliment to John the Baptist - “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…” (Matthew 11: 11). Jesus has also paid another great tribute to Nathanael - When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” (John 1: 47) Jesus must have either said this or must have felt like saying this to his father, Joseph. The New Testament identifies Joseph as ‘the just man’. Joseph is a silent saint. No word of his is recorded in the gospels. Indeed no word was needed, since his whole life was a great testimony of all the gospel values.
Joseph is honoured by the Church as well by popular devotion as the patron and guardian of so many aspects of human life. He is the patron of the Catholic Church, of virgins, of families, of labourers, of immigrants, of holy death and many, many more... (The patronage list given under St Joseph is stunning. Those who wish to see this list, please go to: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-joseph/) I wish to add one more to this list. I wish to honour St Joseph as the guardian and patron of dreams. He is mentioned in Matthew’s gospel only on three occasions. In all of them, he is portrayed as being visited by the angel of God in his dreams. One of those instances is given as today’s gospel:

Matthew 1: 18-24
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. "All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife.

Two other instances where Joseph is mentioned, are the following:
Matthew 2: 13-14
Now when they (the wise men from the east) had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.
Matthew 2: 19-21
But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead." So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

Analysis of these three passages will give us good reasons to say that Joseph is indeed the guardian and patron of dreams. Joseph must have felt extremely happy to have been betrothed to Mary, the most admired young girl in Nazareth. But his joy was short lived. His dreams of having a glorious life with Mary, came crashing down when he learnt that Mary was pregnant. It was his choice to either make this public or solve this problem more quietly. He decided on the latter. He was a gentleman to the core.
If Joseph had decided on making this public, he would have been honoured; but Mary would have faced death by stoning. All of us have been quite disturbed by the famous news about Sakineh Ashtiani, a 43 year old mother, who was accused of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning by the court in Iran. While this news captured the headlines, there were gory details as to how this sentence would be carried out. The accused lady would be buried up to her neck and then people (are they human beings?) would stand around and throw stones at her head until she died.
For every one or two of these instances that capture media attention, thousands of women are brutally murdered and buried without any trace of attention. If this was the case in our ‘civilized society’, it must have been worse during the time of Joseph and Mary.
As Joseph was struggling to solve this problem, the angel came to him in a dream. If Joseph was a selfish person thinking only of his honour and did not care about Mary, the angel would have found it difficult to go to Joseph. Even God would find it difficult to enter a selfish person’s heart. The more selfless and sensitive a heart, the brighter the chances of divine interruptions… even through dreams!

All human beings dream. Then why make Joseph the patron of dreams? I can think of two reasons. There could surely be more.
Reason 1: Joseph was capable of interpreting his dreams as good news even during his agony. For many of us this may not be easy. When we are hemmed in by trials all around us, we tend to lose our normal, day to day activities, especially our sleep. Even if we manage to get some sleep, we may get more nightmares than dreams. Joseph must have been in such a predicament. Still, he recognised his dreams as divine promptings and interventions. Only persons without deceit, persons who are just, are capable of this. Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph?
Reason 2: It is easy to dream dreams; but not easy to act on them. In all the three gospel passages we cited, Joseph woke up from sleep and followed the instructions from the angel. If these instructions were easy, cozy things, then we won’t mind following them. Such instructions are dictated to us through our ‘commercial dreams’… a cream would change our complexion in a matter of days, or a toothpaste would make our friends flock around us all the time. We tend to follow these dreams, don’t we? The instructions that Joseph received in his dreams were demanding, tough decisions – taking a pregnant woman as his wife, taking a baby and his mother at night and travelling to a strange land… Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph? Don’t we wish to honour St Joseph, the Patron of dreams?

Fr Ronald Rolheiser, a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, is a speaker, columnist and author of many books. In his homily on ‘Joseph and Christmas’ he brings out another aspect of Joseph as revealed in today’s gospel:
Joseph is presented to us as an "upright" man, a designation that scholars say implies that he has conformed himself to the Law of God, the supreme Jewish standard of holiness. In every way he is blameless, a paradigm of goodness, which he demonstrates in the Christmas story by refusing to expose Mary to shame, even as he decides to divorce her quietly.
Then, after receiving revelation in a dream, he agrees to take her home as his wife and to name the child as his own. Partly we understand the significance of that, he spares Mary embarrassment, he names the child as his own, and he provides an accepted physical, social, and religious place for the child to be born and raised. But he does something else that is not so evident: He shows how a person can be a pious believer, deeply faithful to everything within his religious tradition, and yet at the same time be open to a mystery beyond both his human and religious understanding.
What does one do when God breaks into one's life in new, previously unimaginable ways? How does one deal with an impossible conception?... In essence what Joseph teaches us is how to live in loving fidelity to all that we cling to humanly and religiously, even as we are open to a mystery of God that takes us beyond all the categories of our religious practice and imagination.
Isn't that one of the ongoing challenges of Christmas?

Dear Friends,This homily was broadcast on Vatican Radio (Tamil Service). Kindly visit www.vaticanradio.org and keep in touch. Thank you.

GOD-WITH-US இறைவன் நம்மோடு

http://www.davisepic.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/image.png

Another key word in the fourth verse of Psalm 23 is WITH. “I will fear no evil, for you are WITH me…” God is seen as being with the Psalmist and not against him. More on this next week.
These were the closing lines of my last reflection. Since Harold Kushner is ‘with’ me, I can boldly venture into these reflections. When we are faced with painful situations, we become vulnerable physically and mentally. In quite a few of these situations, we feel that the whole world has ganged up against us. Quite often, questions about God do surface – questions about God’s whereabouts. Is God on my side or on the side of pain, misfortune, injustice etc.? “When the psalmist writes, ‘I will fear no evil for Thou art with me,’ he is not only saying, I can handle this because I am not alone. He is saying, I can handle this because God is with me and not on the side of the illness or accident. I can handle this because God is on my side and not on the side of the selfish, deceptive people who are embittering my life.” (Kushner)

After saying this, Kushner goes on to explain how God is ALWAYS on the side of the weak, the suffering. He cites the example of God’s meeting with Moses in the Burning Bush (Exodus 3: 1 to 4: 17). Here is how Kushner interprets this passage:
“God appears to Moses at the Burning Bush and directs him to go to Pharaoh and demand that Pharaoh free the Hebrew slaves. Moses responds by asking God, ‘What is Your name? When I go to Pharaoh and to the Israelites and tell them that You sent me, and they ask me who You are, what am I to say?’ At first glance, it sounds like a strange question. (God: Moses, I am the God of your fathers. I want you to change the course of human history by going to Pharaoh and demanding that he set his slaves free. Moses: Excuse me, what was Your name again?) We need to realize that in the biblical times, your name was more than your identification. It was your essence; it defined what you were about and what you stood for. Moses was asking God, What kind of god are you? There are fertility gods, gods of war, gods of the harvest. What kind of god are you? God answers him in three words that defy translation, Ehyeh asher ehyeh, usually rendered, ‘I am what I am’ or ‘I will be what I will be.’ Theologians, who assume that when God speaks, He speaks theology, explain those words to mean ‘I am pure being.’ Others understand God to be saying, ‘What I am is more than you can comprehend.’ But I have always been drawn to the interpretation that connects God’s answer to His use of the word ‘Ehyeh’ two verses earlier, when He tells Moses, ‘When you go to Pharaoh, I will be with you. For me, that is God’s name, the essence of what He is about. God is the one who is with us when we have to do something hard. He is the one who is with us when we are tempted to feel that the world has abandoned us. He is the one who is with us when we feel alone in the valley of the shadow.”

Having been assured that God would be with him, Moses undertook the monumental mission of leading his people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. In the desert, almost on a daily basis, Moses was tested about God being with him. Towards the end of his forty years of wandering in the desert with the people, God made clear to Moses that he would not enter the Promised Land. This must have been the worst trial Moses faced in his life. But, by that time he was a seasoned leader who understood well that God was ALWAYS with him. So, he passed on this wisdom to Joshua – the wisdom of God’s accompaniment, come what may: Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the LORD swore to their ancestors to give them…The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31: 7-8) Having been brought up in such a tradition, it is no wonder that the Psalmist talks of this in his masterpiece: “I will fear no evil, for you are WITH me…”

God’s presence with us does not always guarantee peace and consolation. When the angel Gabriel greeted Mary saying, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”, Mary was greatly troubled, says the Gospel (Luke 1: 28-29). God being with us does not automatically reduce pain. Sometimes, as in the case of Mary, God’s presence with us may bring more pain. What is assured in the 4th verse of Psalm 23 is that although there would be pain, God would be with us and that would take care of the pain.
Paul talks of God being present with us when we are surrounded by all sorts of pain. In his letter to Romans, Paul is very poetic when he describes that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8: 31-39)

Moses, Joshua, Mary, Paul… generations of the people of Israel have passed on this great wisdom that God is WITH us through thick and thin. We are very well aware of all the persecutions the Jewish race had undergone right down to the time of World War II. During these persecutions, there have been very inspiring episodes of courage and perseverance. The wisdom of ‘God-with-us’ passed on to them by their ancestors must have made them emerge from ashes over and over again, like phoenix!Emmanuel, God-with-us, is one of the most beautiful attributes of God. During the Advent Season we are constantly reminded of this lovely essence of God. May this Advent Season strengthen our image of the Emmanuel!

Miracles with a vengeance

http://mki.wisc.edu/Library/NewAcqs/2004/Spring2004.htm

Some Biblical passages are highly symbolic and ‘too good’ to be true. Today’s first reading from Isaiah is one such passage. Here are the opening lines of this passage:
Isaiah 35: 1
The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus*, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
(*Crocus = flowers in yellow, white and purple shades)
As I read these lines to prepare my reflections, I could easily sense two streams of thoughts within me. On one side, I wished that impossible dreams like this come true. On the other hand, my ‘practical’ mind tried to brush these dreams aside as too much fantasy, too poetic! Fantasy and poetry cannot feed the stomach, says my practical mind. Is there a place for fantasy and poetry in this world? I think so. I think so definitely. What kind of a world will ours be, where there is no poetry, painting, sculpture etc.? In short, what will the world be without art? World without heart!
Art, in my opinion, has been the heart-beat of the human race and has kept alive our dreams and hopes. Art, in its turn, has been kept alive for centuries by religion. Religious scriptures have given birth to so many masterpieces of art! The passage we have just heard from Isaiah is a good sample to show that scriptures have many inspiring, artistic pieces and they become inspiration for other art forms. They contain inspirational passages to lift human spirits which, otherwise, would be weighed down by and entangled in ‘practical’ thinking.

Quite many poets were much ahead of their times and, in that sense, they were prophets. Although, on a personal level, they lived a miserable life, their words lifted people out of their misery. One such poet was the revolutionary Tamil poet Subramaniya Bharathi whose birthday we celebrated yesterday, December 11. His thirst for a free India consumed him while he was only 38 (December 11, 1882 - September 11, 1921). Although he was chained by the oppressive structures and his own poverty, he was eloquent in speaking of real true freedom. His idea of freedom went far beyond political freedom, to gender justice and other forms of freedom and equality… much ahead of his times.

In today’s Gospel we are presented with another hero similar to Bharathi, who, in his personal life, was an unbridled spirit – John the Baptist! Here is the best compliment Jesus gives about John in today’s Gospel: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…” (Matthew 11: 11). John was a lonesome voice in the desert; but, he made himself heard by the people. While he welcomed the common people and gave them hope, he was severe on religious and political leaders. He was becoming too dangerous to the powerful. Result? Imprisonment. Even in prison, John was not bothered about his personal life; he was more worried about his people. He was hoping that after his imprisonment, Jesus would have taken the lead role to set free his people. When nothing was happening after his imprisonment, John sent word to Jesus asking him the key question: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Jesus did not answer this question directly since the idea of freedom was very different between Jesus and John. John’s idea of freedom for the Israelites revolved around these steps: drive away the powerful, capture power from them, and set the people free – in that order. Jesus’ idea began with setting the people free, free from personal bondages first. This is where he seems to resonate with Prophet Isaiah’s dream: Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. (Isaiah 35: 5-6)

The lines leading up to these two verses give us deep thoughts. In the preceding verse Isaiah says: “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isaiah 35: 4). When I read the word ‘vengeance’ my mind was curious to find how God’s vengeance would work. But, what a disappointment! Verses 5 and 6 talk nothing about vengeance. Doing something good is not a way of vengeance? Think again. This is probably a much stronger vengeance. God performs miracles with a vengeance!
An ‘eye for an eye’ is the usual, narrow sense of the idea of vengeance. But, ‘turning the other cheek’ is also another form. Doing good is a much stronger way of responding to evil. Such ‘vengeance’ does take place in the world even today. I would like to remind you about the incident I had recorded in my reflections a few months back – the incident about Ahmad Khatib, a 12 year old Palestininan boy. (Cf. The blogspot posted on February 23, 2010: FORGIVING = BREATHING)

Here are the details: In November 2005 Ahmad Khatib, a 12 year old boy, was killed by the Israeli soldiers who mistook his toy gun for real. His parents Ishmael Khatib and Ablah are simple people and Ishmael is a mechanic. Both the parents decided to do something marvellous. They decided to donate all the organs of Ahmad to the hospital in Israel. Many Palestinians were furious with this decision. When asked about this decision, Ishmael said: “They (Israeli forces) killed my son who was healthy, and we want to give his organs to those who need them. No one can tell me what to do. I feel very good that my son’s organs are helping six Israelis . . . I feel that my son has entered the heart of every Israeli. We are doing it for humane purposes and for the sake of the world’s children and the children of this country. I have taken this decision because I have a message for the world: that the Palestinian people want peace — for everyone.” His mother, Ablah, said: “We have no problem whether it is an Israeli or a Palestinian (who receives his organs) because it will give them life.” (A victory over death and hate, Nov. 9, 2005 - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east)
This gesture of Ishmael is all the more marvellous since he spent time in Israeli jails in the 1980s as a militant who fought against occupation. But now he runs the Ahmed Khatib Center for Peace, a small youth center in the Jenin refugee camp. http://www.arabamericannews.com/
God comes with vengeance to shower blessings. Jesus continued this style in his life. It is our duty to continue this rich tradition of ‘vengeance’ during this Advent Season.

Dear Friends,This homily was broadcast on Vatican Radio (Tamil Service). Kindly visit www.vaticanradio.org and keep in touch. Thank you.
