5th Sunday of Easter
There are a few verses
in the Bible that have been used extensively and liberally, in-context and out-of-context,
in-season and out-of-season. One such verse is part of today’s gospel: “I
am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
There are seven
occasions in John’s Gospel where Jesus has spoken the famous ‘I am’ lines. All
these lines are self-defining lines, not as a person blowing one’s own trumpet,
but as someone trying to dispel darkness, doubts and debates.
“I am the bread
of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger.” John 6:35
“I am the light
of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have
the light of life.” John
8:12
“I am the gate;
if anyone enters through me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and
find pasture.” John
10:9
“I am the good
shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” John 10:11
“I am the resurrection
and the life; he who believes in me shall live even if he dies.” John 11:25
“I am the way,
and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me.” John 14:6
“I am the true
vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” John 15:1
There are quite many
hymns composed on these ‘I am’ statements of Jesus. These statements have also
been used as famous quotes inscribed on the altars, on trophies and on
clothing. As hymns and inscriptions these statements sound very solemn and
grand. But, we need to look at the context in which these statements were made
and the context would help us understand these statements better.
Last week we reflected
on one of these ‘I am’ statements of Jesus, describing himself as both the gate
for the sheepfold and the good shepherd. We understand that that discourse
(John 10:1-10), follows immediately after Chapter 9, which talks of Jesus
healing a person born blind. The curing of the visually challenged person
triggered a hot debate and the Pharisees branded Jesus, who healed on a
Sabbath, as a sinner and as an agent of the devil. To these accusations of the
Pharisees Jesus seems to clarify his role as the good shepherd and the gate
(John 10: 9,11). Similarly, we can see that all the ‘I am’ statements of Jesus were
statements of clarification and assurance in the midst of doubts and debates.
Life’s trials can either break or make us…
During trials, our true convictions come to light. These moments, as it were,
give us an opportunity to learn about ourselves better. We also admire those
who, due to their self-assurance (and not fake arrogance), remain calm during
trials. We see this happening in
Jesus’ life over and over again.
This stands in stark contrast to what
happens to politicians who, while on stage, can speak eloquently on who they
are – namely, ‘servant of servants’ and the ‘utopia’ they would be creating
once they come to power. But, when they step out of their comfort zones and are
challenged, they back away from their ‘self-definitions’ and speak contrary to
what they had thundered on the stage, just minutes earlier. It is not the
comfort zones, but the conflict zones that bring out the true colours of a
person.
Real gold and fake gold glitter while they
are placed in the showcase. But, when they are placed in fire, the true
‘colours’ of the real and the fake gold come to light. For Jesus, the tougher
the challenges he faced, the stronger were his convictions. In times of trials,
He defines and re-defines His true colours! These ‘defining moments’ have been
recorded in the Gospel of John as the ‘I am’ statements.
While the first five ‘I
am’ statements in the above list were spoken in public, the last two were spoken
as part of the private farewell discourse of Jesus during the Last Supper with
his disciples. Today’s gospel is part of this farewell discourse. This passage
begins with Jesus trying to instil some hope in his disciples. The mood at the
Last Supper must have been quite disturbing and depressing. To add to this
gloom, Jesus had predicted during the supper that one of the disciples would
betray him and another would deny him. In a close-knit group, such as the one
formed by the disciples around Jesus, such predictions must have sounded very
shocking.
To dispel the gloom,
Jesus speaks about the future. Here is the fist part of today’s Gospel:
John 14: 1-6
“Do not let your
hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house
has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going
there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I
will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You
know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to
him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me.”
Most of our trials
arise out of conflicts between two worlds that we live in. In the first chapter
of the book titled ‘Living a Life That Matters’ written by the Jewish
Rabbi, Harold S.Kushner, he talks about these two worlds – the world of work
and commerce as well as the world of faith.
According to Kushner,
the world of work and commerce honours people for being attractive and
productive. It reveres winners and scorns losers, as reflected in its treatment
of devoted public servants who lose an election or in the billboard displayed
at the Atlanta Olympic Games a few years ago: ‘You don’t win the silver medal,
you lose the gold.’ As in many contests, there are many more losers than
winners, so most of the citizens of that world spend a lot of time worrying
that they don’t measure up.
As against this ‘world
of work and commerce’ which glorifies ‘winning at all costs’, Kushner talks of
the ‘world of faith’ in these words: But, fortunately, there is another
world … the world of faith, the world of the spirit. Its heroes are models of
compassion rather than competition. In that world, you win through sacrifice
and self-restraint. You win by helping your neighbour and sharing with him
rather than finding his weakness and defeating him. And in the world of the
spirit, there are many more winners than losers. (Kushner)
Jesus, during the Last
Supper, was talking to a group of disciples who felt themselves to be losers.
Jesus was trying to tell them that they were winners of the Father’s house and
that He was the way leading to this great house.
A parting thought: This is the month of May… Quite many of us would be
at the cross-roads, choosing a career or a course, facing a transfer. We
remember especially the youth who will need lot more light to choose the proper
way for their future. We pray that the Good Shepherd, who is the Way and the
Truth, will lead them towards abundant Life.

சொற்கள், வழிபாடு என்ற எல்லையைத் தாண்டி, நினைவில் பதியக்கூடிய சொற்களாக விளங்குகின்றன. அவ்வாறு, தலைமுறை, தலைமுறையாக மிகவும் புகழ்பெற்ற இயேசுவின் கூற்றுகளில் ஒன்று, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில்
இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. "வழியும், உண்மையும், வாழ்வும் நானே..."
யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு, ஏழு முறை "நானே..."
என்ற சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்தி, தன்னைப் பற்றி கூறியுள்ளார்:
வாழ்வு தரும் உணவு நானே - யோவான் 6: 35
உலகின் ஒளி நானே - 8: 12
நானே வாயில். என் வழியாக நுழைவோருக்கு ஆபத்து இல்லை - 10: 9
நல்ல ஆயன் நானே - 10: 12
உயிர்த்தெழுதலும், வாழ்வும் நானே - 11: 25
வழியும், உண்மையும், வாழ்வும் நானே - 14: 6
உண்மையான திராட்சைச் செடி நானே - 15: 1
என்பவை, அந்த அற்புதமான 'நானே' வாக்கியங்கள்.
இயேசு கூறிய இந்த ‘நானே’ வாக்கியங்களை மையப்படுத்திய பல பாடல்களை
நாம் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். பல்வேறு மாறுபட்டச் சூழல்களில் இந்த வாக்கியங்களை நாம் மேற்கோள்களாகப்
பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். பாடல்களாக, மேற்கோள்களாக இந்த
வாக்கியங்கள் ஒலிக்கும்போது, மனதில் நிறைவான
பல எண்ணங்கள் எழும். தன்னைப் பற்றிய இந்த வாக்கியங்களை, தன்னைப் பற்றிய இந்த இலக்கணங்களை, இயேசு எதற்காகக் கூறினார் என்பதைச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, இந்த வாக்கியங்கள் இன்னும் கூடுதலானப் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தருகின்றன.
யோவான் நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு தன்னைப்பற்றிக் கூறிய "நானே..."
வாக்கியங்கள் எத்தகையச் சூழல்களில் சொல்லப்பட்டன என்பதை ஆழ்ந்து ஆராய்ந்தால், இவை அனைத்துமே, எதிர்ப்புகள், குழப்பங்கள் மத்தியில், இயேசு கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் என்பதை உணரலாம். போராட்டமும், குழப்பமும் தன்னை நெருக்கும்போது ஒருவர் 'நான் இப்படிப்பட்டவன்' என்று கூறுவதில்
நல்ல பாடங்களைக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியும். இயேசு இன்று அத்தகையப் பாடங்களை நமக்குச் சொல்லித்
தருகிறார்.
நம்முடைய வாழ்வைக் கொஞ்சம் திரும்பிப் பார்ப்போம். நமது உண்மையான
இயல்பு எப்போது அதிகம் வெளிப்படுகின்றது? எதிர்ப்பு, குழப்பம், போராட்டம் இவை பெருகும்போது, நமது உண்மை இயல்பு வெளிப்படும். வாழ்க்கை, மிகச்
சீராக, சுமுகமாகச் செல்லும்போது, நாம் எதை நம்புகிறோம், எதை நம்புவதில்லை, எது நமது வாழ்வின் அடிப்படை என்ற கேள்விகளெல்லாம் எழாது. ஆனால், போராட்டங்களில், சங்கடங்களில் நாம்
சிக்கிக்கொள்ளும்போது, நமது நிலைப்பாடு
என்ன, நாம் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்கள் என்பதெல்லாம் முதலில் நமக்குத் தெரியவரும், பின்னர் இவை பிறருக்கும் தெரியவரும். உண்மைத் தங்கமோ, போலித் தங்கமோ அழகிய ஒரு கண்ணாடி பேழைக்குள் இருக்கும்போது ஒரே விதத்தில் மின்னும்.
வேறுபாடு தெரியாது. தீயில் இடப்பட்டால் தான் உண்மைத் தங்கமும், போலித் தங்கமும் தங்கள் உண்மை நிலைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தும்.
இந்த ஒரு பின்னணியுடன் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியை நாம் அணுகுவது
நமக்கு உதவியாக இருக்கும். “வழியும் உண்மையும் வாழ்வும் நானே” என்ற சொற்களை, இயேசு, அமைதியான ஒரு சூழலில், ஒரு புன்முறுவலுடன், இலேசான ஒரு பெருமையுடன்
கம்பீரமாகச் சொல்லவில்லை. தன் சீடர்களுடன் இறுதி இரவுணவை அருந்திய வேளையில் இயேசு
இச்சொற்களைக் கூறினார். பயம், கலக்கம், சந்தேகம்... போன்ற எதிர்மறை உணர்வுகளில் மூழ்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த சீடர்களிடம்,
இயேசு, “வழியும் உண்மையும்
வாழ்வும் நானே” என்ற வார்த்தைகளைச் சொல்கிறார்.
சீடர்கள் அச்சமும், கலக்கமும், சந்தேகமும் அடையக் காரணம்
என்ன? இயேசு அப்போதுதான் அவர்களிடம் இரு பெரும் கசப்பான உண்மைகளைப்
பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார். இயேசுவின் மிக நெருக்கமான பன்னிரு சீடர்களில் ஒருவர், அவரைக் காட்டிக்
கொடுப்பார் என்றும், மற்றொரு சீடர், இயேசுவைத் தனக்குத் தெரியாது என்று மறுதலிப்பார் என்றும், இயேசு, இரு கசப்பான
உண்மைகளைக் கூறியிருந்தார். உண்மைகள் பொதுவாகவே கசக்கும், அதுவும் நம்பிக்கைத் துரோகம் என்ற உண்மை பெரிதும் கசக்கும். எனவே, சீடர்கள்
கலக்கத்திலும், குழப்பத்திலும் ஆழ்ந்திருந்தனர்.
நாம் சந்திக்கும் கலக்கம், குழப்பம், போராட்டம் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு காரணமாக இருப்பது, நாம் வாழும் இரு
வேறு உலகங்கள். இவ்விரு உலகங்களைப்பற்றி, யூத மத குரு Harold S.Kushner அவர்கள், ‘Living a Life That Matters’ என்ற தன் நூலின் முதல் பிரிவில் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்:
வேலை மற்றும் வர்த்தகத்தின்
உலகம், (the world of work and
commerce) நம்பிக்கையின் உலகம் (the world of faith) என்ற இரு உலகங்களுடன் நாம் வாழ்கிறோம். வேலை-வர்த்தக உலகம், வெற்றிபெற்றவர்களை போற்றுகிறது, தோற்றவர்களை ஏளனம்
செய்கிறது. மக்களுக்காக தன்னையே அர்ப்பணித்து பணி செய்யும் ஒருவர், தேர்தலில் தோற்றுப்போகும்போது, அவரை இந்த உலகம்
எள்ளி நகையாடுகிறது. 1996ம் ஆண்டு, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டில் Atlanta என்ற நகரில் ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகள் நடைபெற்றன. அப்போது வெளியான ஒரு விளம்பரத்தில், "நீ வெள்ளிப் பதக்கத்தை வெல்லவில்லை, தங்கப் பதக்கத்தை இழந்துள்ளாய்." (You don’t win the silver
medal, you lose the gold) என்ற வார்த்தைகள்
பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டன: இந்த வார்த்தைகள் நமது வேலை-வர்த்தக உலகம் காட்டும் வழி. வெள்ளி
போதாது, தங்கம் வேண்டும்; வேண்டும்... இன்னும் வேண்டும் என்று ஆவலைத் தூண்டும் ஓர் உலகம் இது. இந்த ஆவலைத்
தீர்க்க, போட்டிகளை உருவாக்கும்
உலகம் இது. இந்த உலகில், ஒருவர் வெற்றி அடைய, பலர் தோல்வி அடையவேண்டும். அடுத்தவரது பலமற்ற நிலைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தி, அவரைத் தோல்வியடையச் செய்வதே வெற்றிக்குச் சிறந்த வழி என்று இங்கு சொல்லித்
தரப்படுகிறது.
வேலை-வர்த்தக உலகை இவ்வாறு படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டும் Kushner அவர்கள், தொடர்ந்து, நம்பிக்கையின் உலகைப்பற்றி
விவரிக்கிறார்:
நல்ல வேளை... நம்பிக்கையின் உலகம் என்ற மற்றொரு உலகமும் இருக்கிறது.
ஆன்மீகத்தை வளர்க்கும் உயர்ந்த கொள்கைகள் நிறைந்த வேறொரு உலகம் இது. இந்த உலகில் போட்டிகள்
இல்லை. அடுத்தவரது பலமற்ற நிலைகளைக் கண்டு, அவருக்கு உதவிகள் செய்வதே இங்கு இயல்பாக நடைபெறும் ஒரு செயல். இந்த உலகில் அனைவரும்
வெற்றிபெற வேண்டும் என்றே எல்லாரும் பாடுபடுகின்றனர். இந்த உலகில் தோற்பவர்களைவிட, வெற்றி பெறுபவர்களே அதிகம்.
இறுதி இரவுணவின் வேளையில், நம்பிக்கையிழந்து, தோற்றுவிட்டவர்களைப்போல் முகம் கவிழ்ந்து அமர்ந்திருந்த சீடர்களிடம்
இயேசு கூறிய சொற்களே இன்றைய நற்செய்தியாக ஒலிக்கிறது.
யோவான் நற்செய்தி 14:1-6
இயேசு தன் சீடர்களிடம் கூறியது: “நீங்கள் உள்ளம் கலங்க வேண்டாம்.
கடவுளிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளுங்கள். என்னிடமும் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளுங்கள். தந்தை வாழும்
இடத்தில் உறைவிடங்கள் பல உள்ளன. அப்படி இல்லையெனில், ‘உங்களுக்கு இடம் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்போகிறேன்’ என்று சொல்லியிருப்பேனா? நான் போய் உங்களுக்கு இடம் ஏற்பாடு செய்தபின் திரும்பி வந்து உங்களை என்னிடம்
அழைத்துக் கொள்வேன். அப்போது நான் இருக்கும் இடத்திலேயே நீங்களும் இருப்பீர்கள். நான்
போகுமிடத்துக்கு வழி உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றார். தோமா அவரிடம், “ஆண்டவரே, நீர் எங்கே போகிறீர் என்றே எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. அப்படியிருக்க நீர் போகுமிடத்துக்கான
வழியை நாங்கள் எப்படித் தெரிந்து கொள்ள இயலும்?” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “வழியும் உண்மையும் வாழ்வும் நானே” என்றார்.
அவர்கள் அனைவரும் தன் தந்தையின் இல்லத்தை வென்றவர்கள் என்ற
எண்ணத்தை சீடர்கள் உள்ளங்களில் இயேசு ஆழமாகப் பதிக்கிறார். அந்த இல்லத்திற்கு செல்லும்
வழியாக, அந்த இல்லத்தில்
சீடர்கள் பெறவிருக்கும் வாழ்வாக தான் இருப்பதை, “வழியும் உண்மையும் வாழ்வும் நானே” என்ற சொற்கள் வழியே இயேசு உணர்த்துகிறார். இறுதி இரவுணவின் வேளையில்,
சீடர்களைவிட அதிக குழப்பத்திற்கும், போராட்டங்களுக்கும் உள்ளானவர் இயேசு என்பதை
நாம் அறிவோம். இருப்பினும், அவர், தன்னைப்பற்றியும், தன் தந்தையைப்பற்றியும்
கொண்டிருந்த தெளிவினால், அமைதியாக, தன் பாடுகளை எதிர்கொள்ள துணிவுபெற்றார்.
போராட்டமான, குழப்பமானச் சூழல்களில் முதலில் நம்மைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவு நமக்கு இருந்தால் மட்டுமே, அந்தப் போராட்டத்திற்கு, குழப்பத்திற்கு
தீர்வுகாண முடியும். நம்மைப்பற்றியத் தெளிவோ, அல்லது நம்மைப்பற்றிய நம்பிக்கையோ இல்லாமல் போகும்போது, போராட்டங்கள், நம்மில் அடிப்படைக் கேள்விகளை எழுப்பும். பிறரைப் பற்றியும், கடவுளைப் பற்றியும் கேள்விகள் எழும். இக்கேள்விகளின் சுமையில், நாம் உடைந்துபோகவும், சிதறிப்போகவும் வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. தம்மையும், சீடர்களையும் சுற்றி எதிர்ப்பும், போராட்டமும் சூழ்ந்துவருவதை நன்கு உணர்ந்த இயேசு, தான் யார், தன் பணி என்ன என்பவை
குறித்தத் தெளிவைப் பெற்றிருந்தார். தன் சீடர்களிடமும் அந்தத் தெளிவை உருவாக்க, “வழியும் உண்மையும் வாழ்வும் நானே” என்ற வார்த்தைகளை அவர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துகொள்கிறார்.
இது மே மாதம். வாழ்வுப் பாதைகளை, பயணங்களைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் நேரம் இது. பலருக்கு வேலை மாற்றம், இடம் மாற்றம், என்று பல மாற்றங்களை
சந்திக்கும் சூழல்கள் எழுந்திருக்கலாம். பல்வேறு பாதைகள் குறுக்கும் நெடுக்குமாக நம்
வாழ்வில் தெரியும்போது, இறைவன் சரியான வழியை, சரியான திசையை நமக்குக் காட்ட வேண்டும் என்று செபிப்போம்.
பல இளையோர் தங்கள் பள்ளிப்படிப்பை, அல்லது கல்லூரிப் படிப்பை முடித்துவிட்டு தங்கள் தொடர் கல்வியை, பணியை, அல்லது வாழ்வு
நிலையைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் தருணத்தில் உள்ளனர். இத்தருணத்தில், இயேசு கூறும் "வழியும், உண்மையும், வாழ்வும் நானே" என்ற வார்த்தைகள்,
அவர்களை, நல் வழிக்கு, ஒளிமிக்க, உண்மையான வாழ்வுக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்லவேண்டுமென்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
