January 1 - Mary, the Mother of God

“The Lord bless you and keep you: The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you: The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.” (Numbers 6: 24-26)

The first reading (Numbers 6:22-27) brings us these words of blessings on the very first day of the New Year. This blessing was ‘taught’ by God to Moses and through him to Aaron and his sons (cf. Nm. 6:22).  

Seeing God ‘face to face’ was considered a dangerous risk by the Israelites. God teaches through Moses that seeing God’s face is a blessing that will bring peace. For the past two years seeing God and seeing our own family members were considered dangerous due to the ominous presence of COVID-19. We were limited to seeing God (namely, attending Mass and other liturgical celebrations) as well as seeing our own family members via touch-screens. We pray that the New Year 2023 help us see God and our family members face to face and enjoy greater peace!

The first day of January, is a Quadruple Festival. Yes, we have four good reasons to celebrate this day. The first reason… this is the beginning of another year in the Gregorian calendar. This is accepted as the New Year Day in most countries. It would surely help the human spirit if each of the 365 or 366 days of the year is celebrated as ‘first days’. A fresh beginning helps to revive the human spirit.

When we think of the New Year Day, we surely associate this with thoughts of ‘beginning’. We need to reflect whether the New Year ‘begins’ within us or outside of us. The media has been busy for the past few days on ‘looking back’ on 2022 as well as projecting 2023. In India, there is the additional discussion on what the stars foretell for 2023! It is so easy to let outside forces to lead us and govern us than to take the responsibility for our own life.

A mother heard her son saying the night prayers on the eve of the New Year. He was telling God what he planned to do the next year and how God could help him do this and that. The mother interrupted, saying, “Son, don’t bother giving God instructions; just report for duty.”

The New Year invites all of us to express good intentions and resolutions. “Just report for duty!” Each new day is “a miniature eternity”- 24 hours, 1440 minutes, 86,400 seconds. During that time, there are blessings to be received, there are opportunities to be grasped, challenges to be accepted, internal peace to cherish, etc.

‘Reporting for duty’ is what we hear in today’s Gospel (Luke 2: 16-21) The shepherds reported back for duty; Mary “kept pondering in her heart.” We, too, are here to report for duty and we need to learn what things to treasure, time to reflect. The time is now. Time is not the problem! It’s a matter of priorities! What are our priorities? Once these priorities are clearly lined up, then the whole year can be spent in relative peace and serenity. This does not mean our life will be a highway strewn only with flowers of bright colours. There would be crosses planted along the way.

There’s a story about Auguste Rodin, the great sculptor whose most famous work is called ‘The Thinker’. It seems that one day Rodin noticed a large crucifix that had been discarded in a pile of trash. Although it was terribly marred and defaced, Rodin perceived that it could be restored to its original beauty. Consequently, he and some companions carried the cross to his home, but the cross was too big for the house. What did Rodin do? Rather than return it to the trash heap, Rodin decided to knock some walls and raise the roof of his house to make room for the Cross!

Sometimes we have to welcome a cross into our homes – or each of us could be that cross! Let’s try to restore it.  It’s the ‘Way of the Cross’ that leads us to HIM.  The Church is not a travel agency taking us on a conducted tour, all comforts and perks guaranteed.  We travel not by sight but by faith: by going the extra mile, turning the other cheek, returning good for evil, loving the enemy… Thus, we can see, that there are enough challenges presented to us on New Year’s Day!

The second reason to celebrate January 1st is that this is the eighth day after Jesus’ birth. On this day, according to the Gospel of Luke (Lk. 2: 21), the child was taken to the temple for circumcision and he was given the name Jesus. Although the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is shifted to January 3^rd, we can celebrate the Divine Child being given the special name, Jesus!

The third reason is that the first day of the year is now dedicated to praying for world peace. This year we celebrate the 56^th World Day of Peace, begun by Pope Saint Paul VI on 1^st of January, 1968. For this year, Pope Francis has published his message with the title: “No one can be saved alone - Combatting Covid-19 together, embarking together on paths of peace.”

In his message, the Pope recalls that all crises are interconnected and that we must not forget any of them, but work for the good of humanity. Pope Francis begins his message recalling to mind the effects of the pandemic – COVID 19. He enumerates how the pandemic has affected all the aspects of the human family.

He says: In addition to its physical aspects, Covid-19 led to a general malaise in many individuals and families; the long periods of isolation and the various restrictions on freedom contributed to this malaise, with significant long-term effects. Nor can we overlook the fractures in our social and economic order that the pandemic exposed, and the contradictions and inequalities that it brought to the fore. … Indeed, the pandemic seems to have upset even the most peaceful parts of our world, and exposed any number of forms of fragility.

Three years later, the Pope goes on to say, “the time is right to question, learn, grow and allow ourselves to be transformed as individuals and as communities” reminding us that “we never emerge the same from times of crisis: we emerge either better or worse."

This experience has made us all the more aware of the need for everyone, including peoples and nations, to restore the word “together” to a central place in our lexicon.  Only the peace that comes from a fraternal and disinterested love can help us overcome personal, societal and global crises.

The Pope then turns our attention to the unjust aggression of Russia in Ukraine. Even so, at the very moment when we dared to hope that the darkest hours of the Covid-19 pandemic were over, a terrible new disaster befell humanity. We witnessed the onslaught of another scourge: another war, to some extent like that of Covid-19, but driven by culpable human decisions. The war in Ukraine is reaping innocent victims and spreading insecurity, not only among those directly affected, but in a widespread and indiscriminate way for everyone, also for those who, even thousands of kilometres away, suffer its collateral effects – we need but think of grain shortages and fuel prices. Clearly, this is not the post-Covid era we had hoped for or expected.

Pope Francis raises the question: What then is being asked of us? And he goes on to answer the question: We can no longer think exclusively of carving out space for our personal or national interests; instead, we must think in terms of the common good, recognizing that we belong to a greater community, and opening our minds and hearts to universal human fraternity.

Pope Francis concludes his message with a final appeal in the form of what he hopes for in the New Year: In sharing these reflections, it is my hope that in the coming New Year we can journey together, valuing the lessons that history has to teach us. I offer my best wishes to Heads of State and Government, to Heads of International Organizations, and to the leaders of the different religions. To all men and women of good will I express my prayerful trust that, as artisans of peace, they may work, day by day, to make this a good year!

The fourth and the last reason: The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God – the official Feast of January 1. Of all the four reasons, this stands out as the prime reason given by the Catholic Church. Of all the four reasons, this one seems the most intriguing. The very reason the Church gives as the reason for celebration, would have been a reason for condemnation in Mary’s time. She became a mother defying not only natural laws, but also the laws of her Jewish society. This is an example to tell us that, if God is on our side, we can discover or invent reasons to celebrate life against all odds.

Christmas and New Year is a peak season for sharing greetings. Millions of greetings fill our communication lines. We greet those we love and admire. Here is a greeting to Mary in the form of a letter:

Dear Mother Mary,

I wish to pen these few lines to show you how much we love and admire you for being such a great Mother. On the very first day of the calendar year, we wish to think of you as the Mother of God and celebrate it. But, I was just wondering whether it was possible for you to celebrate this very same fact, namely, becoming the Mother of God. For you, the days following your meeting with Angel Gabriel must have been quite fearful and uncertain.

The land in which you lived is still surrounded by fear and uncertainty. We realise that it is not easy for people to live in war zones – especially for young girls. You lived as a young lady in Roman occupied territory. You must have spent days and even nights in constant fear. Now, due to the Israel occupied Palestine, young girls, both in Palestine as well as Israel are forced to live in constant fear.

Today we celebrate your Motherhood and we have even built great basilicas in your name. Some of these basilicas are marvels in marbles and granite stones. But, if the people of your times had learnt that you had become a mother before your wedding, they would have used stones for a different purpose, namely, to stone you to death and build your tomb with stones. It is possible for us to build thousands of churches in your name since you had built yourself into a temple of God trusting only on God. Rightly has William Wordsworth written lovely lines about you:

Mother! whose virgin bosom was uncrost

With the least shade of thought to sin allied;

Woman! above all women glorified,

Our tainted nature's solitary boast;…

Not only Wordsworth, but thousands upon thousands of artists have been inspired to sing your praises through their masterpieces of art. You are such an inspiration for all of us, Mom!

சனவரி 1, மரியா இறைவனின் தாய் - பெருநாள்

"ஆண்டவர் உனக்கு ஆசி வழங்கி, உன்னைக் காப்பாராக! ஆண்டவர் தம் திருமுகத்தை உன்மேல் ஒளிரச்செய்து, உன்மீது அருள் பொழிவாராக! ஆண்டவர் தம் திருமுகத்தை உன் பக்கம் திருப்பி, உனக்கு அமைதி அருள்வாராக!" – (எண்ணிக்கை 6: 24-26) புத்தாண்டு நாள் திருப்பலியின் முதல் வாசகத்தில், இத்தகைய ஆசி மொழிகளைக் கேட்கிறோம். இறைவன், இந்த ஆசியுரையை, மோசே வழியாக, ஆரோனுக்கும் அவரது புதல்வருக்கும் சொல்லித்தந்தார் என்பது, இந்த ஆசியின் தனிப்பட்ட ஒரு சிறப்பு. கடவுளின் முகத்தைக் காண்பது பெரும் ஆபத்தானது என்று கருதிவந்த இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம், அவர்கள் கொண்டிருந்த எண்ணம் தவறானது, மாறாக, கடவுளை முகமுகமாய்க் காண்பது ஓர் ஆசீர் என்றும், கடவுளைக் காண்பது ஒருவரை அமைதியில் நிறைக்கும் என்றும் இறைவன் மோசே வழியே சொல்லித்தருகிறார்.

கடந்த இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளாக, நம்மை, மீண்டும், மீண்டும், சுற்றிச் சுற்றி வரும் கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்று காரணமாக, கடவுளையும், நம் நெருங்கிய உறவுகளையும் முகமுகமாகக் காண்பது ஆபத்து என்று சொல்லி, இந்த உறவுகளை, தொலைக்காட்சி, மற்றும், தொடு திரை வழியே நாம் பார்த்துவந்தோம். புலர்ந்திருக்கும் இந்த புதிய ஆண்டில், மீண்டும் இந்த பெருந்தொற்றின் கவலை நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ளது. இவ்வேளையில், இந்தப் பெருந்தொற்றின் தாக்கம் குறைந்து, நாம் மீண்டும் இறைவனை ஆலயங்களில் நேருக்கு நேர் சந்திக்கவும், நம் உறவுகளுடன் நேரடி தொடர்புகளை மேற்கொள்ளவும் இறையருளை இறைஞ்சுவோம்.

கிரகோரியன் நாள்காட்டியின்படி, இன்று உலகெங்கும், 2023ம் ஆண்டு துவங்குகிறது. புத்தாண்டு என்றதும், ஆரம்பம், துவக்கம், முதல் என்ற எண்ணங்கள் நம் சிந்தனைகளில் வலம் வருகின்றன. ஆரம்பம் சரிவர அமைந்தால், தொடர்வன அனைத்தும் சரிவர அமையும் என்பது, நம்மில் பலர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் ஓர் உண்மை. இதற்கு நேர் மாறாக, "முதல் கோணல், முற்றும் கோணல்" என்ற எச்சரிக்கையையும், நம்மில் பலர் நன்கறிவோம். இங்கு நாம் குறிப்பிடும் 'ஆரம்பம்', ‘துவக்கம்’, 'முதல்' என்பனவற்றை நாம் எப்படி புரிந்துகொள்கிறோம்? இவை, நமக்கு வெளியில் துவங்கும் ஆரம்பங்களா அல்லது, நமக்குள் பிறக்கும் ஆரம்பங்களா என்பதைப் பொருத்து, புத்தாண்டைக் குறித்த நம் எண்ணங்களும், உணர்வுகளும் அமையும்.

புத்தாண்டுக்கு முன்னதாக, கடந்து வந்த ஆண்டினைத் திரும்பிப் பார்ப்பது, நம்மத்தியில் நிலவும் வழக்கம். கடந்த சில நாட்களாக, ஊடகங்கள், 2022ம் ஆண்டின் அலசல் என்ற பெயரில், அதன் அருமை, பெருமைகளை, வெற்றி, தோல்விகளை நம் நினைவில் பதித்திருக்கும். தொடர்புக்கருவிகள் பெருகியபின், ஊடகங்கள் தரும் செய்திகளுக்காகக் காத்திராமல், நமக்குள்ளும் ஆயிரமாயிரம் செய்திகளைப் பகிர்ந்துவருகிறோம். நாம் பகிர்ந்துவரும் செய்திகளில் பெரும்பாலானவை, நம் மனங்களை துன்புறுத்தும் செய்திகளாகவே அமைந்துள்ளன.

நம்பிக்கை இழக்கச் செய்யும் இந்தக் கண்ணோட்டத்தை சற்று ஒதுக்கிவைத்துவிட்டு, இங்கு, ஆண்டவன் சந்நிதியில், நம்மைப்பற்றி சிந்திப்போம். புத்தாண்டு நமக்குள்ளிருந்து பிறக்கவேண்டும் என்ற தெளிவைப் பெறுவோம். 2022ம் ஆண்டை எவ்விதம் கடந்து வந்தோம் என்று ஓர் ஆன்மீக ஆய்வில் ஈடுபட்டு, நடந்த நல்லவை அனைத்திற்கும் நன்றி சொல்வோம். இனி, நாம் நடத்தப்போகும் வாழ்க்கையை, நல்வழியில் நடத்த, இறைவனின் அருளை வேண்டுவோம்.

புத்தாண்டு நாள் காலையில் ஒருவர் இவ்வாறு வேண்டினார்: "இறைவா, நீர் அளித்துள்ள புத்தாண்டிற்கு, புது வாழ்வுக்கு நன்றி. இறைவா, இவ்வாண்டில் எனக்கொரு கடிகாரத்தைப் பரிசாகத் தாரும். உம் அன்பு எனக்குள் பாய்ந்து, அதன் விளைவாக, நான், தேவையில் இருக்கும் அடுத்தவருக்குக் கரம் நீட்டும் நேரங்களை மட்டும், இந்தக் கடிகாரம் பதிவு செய்யட்டும். அடுத்தவரின் இன்ப, துன்பங்களில் பங்கேற்று, அவர்களுக்குச் செவிமடுக்கும் நேரங்களை மட்டும், இந்தக் கடிகாரம் பதிவு செய்யட்டும்... இறைவா, நேரம் என்ற கொடையை நீர் எனக்குத் தாராளமாக வழங்கியுள்ளீர்; அக்கொடையை நான் பிறரோடு பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளும் மனதைத் தந்தருளும்."

இளையவர் ஒருவர், டிசம்பர் 31 இரவு, அதாவது, புத்தாண்டுக்கு முந்தைய இரவு, படுக்கச்செல்வதற்கு முன், இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார். புதிய ஆண்டிற்கென தான் வகுத்துள்ள அனைத்து திட்டங்களையும் இறைவனிடம் எடுத்துச்சொல்லி, அவர் தனக்கு எந்தெந்த வகையில் உதவி செய்யமுடியும் என்பதையும், தன் செபத்தில், விளக்கிச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். இளையவரின் செபத்தைக் கேட்ட அவரது அம்மா, "மகனே, கடவுளுக்கு நீ திட்டங்களை வகுக்காதே. விடிந்ததும், நீ உன் கடமைகளைச் செய்யப் புறப்படு" என்று அமைதியாகக் கூறினார்.

"கடமைகளைச் செய்யப் புறப்படு" என்பதே, புத்தாண்டு நமக்கு விடுக்கும் அழைப்பு. புத்தாண்டில் நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள நேரம், அளவற்ற ஒரு கொடை. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும், 24 மணி நேரங்கள், 1440 நிமிடங்கள், 86,400 நொடிகள் என்ற உயர்ந்த பரிசு நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இப்பரிசுடன், இறைவனின் ஆசீர், தேடிவரும் வாய்ப்பு, நமது தாராளமனம் என்ற கூடுதல் கொடைகளும் நம்மை வந்தடைகின்றன. இவற்றிற்கு நாம் அளிக்கும் தகுதியான பதில், "கடமைகளைச் செய்யப் புறப்படுதல்"

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் இடையர்களும், அன்னை மரியாவும், தங்கள் கடமைகளைச் செய்தனர் என்பதை வாசிக்கிறோம். "இடையர்கள் தாங்கள் கேட்டவை, கண்டவை அனைத்தையும் குறித்துக் கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்து பாடிக்கொண்டே திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள்" என்று இடையர்களைப் பற்றியும், "மரியா இந்நிகழ்ச்சிகளையெல்லாம் தம் உள்ளத்தில் இருத்திச் சிந்தித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்" என்று அன்னை மரியாவைப்பற்றியும் இன்றைய நற்செய்தி கூறுகிறது.

சனவரி முதல் நாளன்று, இன்னும் மூன்று தினங்களைக் கொண்டாட நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம். இயேசு என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்தபின் வரும் எட்டாம் நாளான இன்று, குழந்தை இயேசுவுக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்து, இயேசு என்ற பெயர் தரப்பட்ட நாள் இது. (காண்க. லூக்கா 2:21) பிறந்த குழந்தைக்குப் பெயரிடுவது ஒரு முக்கிய கொண்டாட்டம்தானே.

உலக அமைதிக்காக செபிக்கும்படி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள நாள், சனவரி முதல்நாள். உலக அமைதி  என்பது ஒரு கனவு தான் என்றாலும், அந்தக் கனவையும் நாம் கொண்டாட வேண்டாமா?

இவ்வாண்டு சிறப்பிக்கப்படும் 56வது உலக அமைதி நாளுக்கென திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் வெளியிட்டுள்ள செய்தியை, "யாரும் தனியே காப்பாற்றப்பட முடியாது - கோவிட் 19 பெருந்தொற்றுடன் போராட, அமைதியின் வழிகளில் அனைவரும் பயணிப்போம்" என்ற மையக்கருத்துடன் பகிர்ந்துள்ளார்.

இச்செய்தியின் துவக்கத்தில் கோவிட் 19 பெருந்தொற்றினால் மனித குடும்பத்திற்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ள இழப்புக்களை திருத்தந்தை நினைவுகூர்ந்துள்ளார்.

“மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின், நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தனிப்பட்ட முறையிலும், குழுமமாகவும் அடையவேண்டிய மாற்றங்களைக் குறித்து கேள்விகள் எழுப்பி பாடங்களைக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். இந்த நெருக்கடியிலிருந்து நாம் முன்பிருந்ததைப் போலவே வெளியேற வாய்ப்பில்லை. ஒன்று, தற்போதைய நிலையைவிட உன்னத நிலையில் வெளியேறுவோம், அல்லது, மிகவும் மோசமான நிலையில் வெளியேறுவோம்” என்று திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, திருத்தந்தையின் செய்தி, உக்ரைன் நாட்டின் மீது இரஷ்யா மேற்கொண்டுள்ள தாக்குதலைப் பற்றி பேசுகிறது. "கோவிட் 19னால் உருவான இருளின் காலம் நீங்கியது என்று நாம் நம்பிவந்த வேளையில், தனி மனிதரின் தவறான முடிவுகளால் நாம் மற்றொரு துயரத்தில் மூழ்கியுள்ளோம். உக்ரைன் நாட்டில் பலியாகும் அப்பாவி மக்கள் மட்டுமல்ல, இந்த போரினால் பல்வேறு நாடுகளில் ஏற்படும் எரிசக்தி தட்டுப்பாடு, உணவு தானிய தட்டுப்பாடு என்று மீண்டும் ஓர் உலகளாவிய பிரச்சனைக்கு மனித குடும்பம் உட்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது" என்று திருத்தந்தை தன் வருத்தத்தை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்.

இத்தகையைச் சூழலில் நம்மிடமிருந்து என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது? என்ற கேள்வியை எழுப்பியுள்ள திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ், "நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் இனி நம் தனிப்பட்ட நலன், நம் நாட்டின் நலன்கள் என்ற அளவில் மட்டும் சிந்திக்காமல், அனைத்து மக்களின் நலனையும் முன்னிறுத்தி சிந்திக்க அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்" என்ற பதிலை பதிவு செய்துள்ளார்.

"அண்மைய வரலாறு நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தந்துள்ள பாடங்களை சரிவர கற்றுக்கொள்வோம் என்பதே என் நம்பிக்கை. அனைத்து நாடுகளின் தலைவர்கள், பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்களின் தலைவர்கள் மற்றும், நல்மனம் கொண்டோர் அனைவரும் இணைந்து, இந்த ஆண்டை நலம் நிறைந்த ஆண்டாக மாற்ற உழைப்பார்கள் என்ற என் நம்பிக்கை நிறைந்த வாழ்த்துக்களை வழங்குகிறேன்" என்ற சொற்களுடன் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் உலக அமைதி செய்தியை நிறைவு செய்துள்ளார்.

புத்தாண்டு நாள், இயேசு என்ற பெயர் வழங்கப்பட்ட நாள், உலக அமைதி நாள் என்ற இம்மூன்று காரணங்களுக்கும் மேலாக, திருஅவை, இன்று ஒரு மாபெரும் விழாவைக் கொண்டாட நமக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. 'மரியா, இறைவனின் தாய்' என்பதே அம்மாபெரும் விழா.

முதல் வாசகத்தில் வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஆசியுரை, நமது புத்தாண்டின் துவக்கத்தில் திருப்பலியில் ஒலிப்பது மிகப் பொருத்தமானது என்று மகிழ்கிறோம். ஆனால், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள், இந்த ஆசியுரையைக் கேட்கும்போது சிறிது அச்சம் கொள்ளவும் வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. குறிப்பாக, "இறைவன் தன் திருமுகத்தை உன்மேல் ஒளிரச்செய்து, உன்மீது அருள் பொழிவாராக!" என்ற சொற்கள் அவர்களுக்கு அச்சம் உருவாக்கும் சொற்கள். காரணம்... இறைவனின் முகத்தைப் பார்த்தவர்கள் உயிரோடிருக்க முடியாது என்பது, அவர்கள் எண்ணம். இந்த எண்ணத்தை முற்றிலும் அழித்து, இறைவனின் முகத்தை காண்பது மட்டுமல்ல, அவரது முகத்தை உருவாக்கவும் அன்னை மரியா தனித்துவமான அருள் பெற்றார் என்பதை, 'மரியா, இறைவனின் தாய்' என்ற திருநாளில் நாம் கொண்டாடுகிறோம்.

கிறிஸ்மஸ், புத்தாண்டு காலத்தில் நமக்கு நெருங்கியவர்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக்கள் அனுப்புகிறோம். வாழ்த்து மடல்கள், கடிதங்கள், மின்னஞ்சல்கள், தொலைபேசி அழைப்புக்கள் என்று, நமது வாழ்த்துக்களைப் பரிமாற, எத்தனையோ வழிகளையும் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். அன்னையான மரியாவுக்கு வாழ்த்து மடல் அனுப்ப, நமது திருப்பலி பொருத்தமான ஒரு நேரம். அவருக்கு ஒரு மடல் எழுதி நம் எண்ணங்களை, வாழ்த்துக்களைச் சொல்ல முயல்வோம்:

எங்கள் அன்பிற்கும் வணக்கத்திற்கும் உரிய மரியன்னையே,

நாங்கள் துவக்கியிருக்கும் 2023ம் ஆண்டில் நீர் எம்மோடு வாழ்ந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று கற்பனை செய்து பார்க்கிறோம். ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் புத்தாண்டு நாளன்று இறைவனின் தாயான உமக்கு நாங்கள் விழா எடுக்கிறோம். ஆனால், இறைவனின் தாயானதை உம்மால் கொண்டாட முடிந்ததா என்பது பெரும் கேள்வியாகவே உள்ளது.

நீர் அன்று வாழ்ந்தபோது, உமது நாடு, உரோமைய ஆதிக்கத்தில் துன்புற்றது. இன்றும் நீர் வாழ்ந்த அப்பகுதியில் எந்நேரமும் போர் மேகங்கள் சூழ்ந்துள்ளன. போர்சூழ்ந்த பூமியில் வாழ்வது யாருக்குமே எளிதல்ல. அதிலும் முக்கியமாக உம்மைப் போன்ற இளம்பெண்களின் நிலை எவ்வளவு ஆபத்தானது என்பதை, இன்னும் இந்த உலகம், பல கொடூரங்களின் வழியாக எங்களுக்கு நினைவுபடுத்திய வண்ணம் உள்ளது.

நீர் இறைவனின் தாயானதை எண்ணி, நன்றி கூறி, பெருமைபட்டு கற்களால் எழுப்பிய கோவில்களில் பீடமேற்றி உம்மை நாங்கள் இன்று வணங்குகிறோம். நீர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், திருமணம் ஆகாமல் இறைவனின் தாயானதற்காக, உமக்கு, கற்களால், கோவில் அல்ல... சமாதி எழுப்பியிருப்பார்கள் என்பதையும் உணர்கிறோம். கண்ணால் காண முடியாத இறைவனை உள்ளத்தால் கண்டு, அவரை மட்டுமே நம்பி, உமக்குள் அவரைச் சுமக்க, உமக்குள் அவருக்குக் கோவில் கட்ட நீர் சம்மதித்ததால், உம் பெயரில் நாங்கள் இன்று கோவில்கள் கட்டுகிறோம்.

கருவில் கடவுளைச் சுமந்ததுமுதல், கல்வாரியில் அவரது உயிரற்ற உடலை, உம் மடிமீது சுமந்ததுவரை உமது மகனால் நீர் அடைந்தது பெரும்பாலும் வேதனைகளே அன்றி நிம்மதி அல்ல. வாழ்ந்த நாட்கள் பலவும் வசைகளையும், வலிகளையும் மட்டும் அனுபவித்த உமக்கு, கடந்த இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகளாய் கிடைத்துள்ள வாழ்த்துக்கள் வானுயர உம்மை உயர்த்தியுள்ளன.

கடந்த இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகள் உலகில் பிறந்த, இனியும் பிறக்கப் போகும் ஒவ்வொரு மனித உயிரும் உம்மை ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் சந்தித்துள்ளனர், இனியும் சந்திப்பார்கள் என்பதை நாங்கள் உறுதியாகச் சொல்லலாம். அத்தனை புகழ் பெற்றவர் நீர். உலகில் வரலாறு படைத்துள்ள பல கோடி பெண்கள் மத்தியில், நீர் உண்மையில் பேறு பெற்றவர்.

"கறைபட்ட எமது குலத்தின் தனிப்பெரும் பெருமை நீர்" என்று ஆங்கிலக் கவிஞர் William Wordsworth உம்மைப்பற்றிச் சொன்னது உமது புகழ்கடலில் ஒரு துளிதான். உமது புகழ்கடலில் நாங்களும் மூழ்கி மகிழ்கிறோம், பெருமைப்படுகிறோம்.

வாழ்க மரியே! வாழ்க எம் அன்னையே!

Solemnity of Christmas

A few years back I was celebrating the Christmas Midnight Mass in one of the suburban parishes in Chennai. Every year when Christmas comes around, the thought of that Mass would cross my mind. This year too as we celebrate Christmas, the memory of that Mass is fresh.

The church of the suburban parish was overflowing with people all dressed up for the occasion. As the time for the homily drew near, I looked up at the audience and at the entrance to the church. Suddenly a thought crossed my mind and I began the homily with this question: “Friends, suppose Mary and Joseph of the original Christmas night were to walk into this church right now, what would happen? How would we feel?”

I could see a lot of smiles among the people… One of the ladies, as if speaking for the rest of them, said, “Oh, what a joy! That would be the most meaningful Christmas we would have ever celebrated! It would be a great blessing indeed.”

I told them not to be so quick in responding but, to think of the real situation a little more deeply. I continued to explain the situation in detail: “Sure! We would be the happiest people on earth if we knew that the two persons entering our church were Mary and Joseph. But, none of us know them. They are simply two strangers in our neighbourhood. We have not seen them earlier. They have, perhaps, travelled for three or four days on a donkey or a mule, or, they simply came walking many miles, (Remember hundreds of poor labourers who were forced to walk miles together, during the total lockdown in India. Their clothes are not clean, to say the least. They may not have had a wash. They are extremely tired. Above all, the lady is pregnant and is expecting the child any moment. Perhaps, she has already started having labour pains. That is why the man, Joseph, seeing a church close by, must have brought her in, trusting that they could get some help…”

As I was giving these details, their enthusiasm as well as their smiles vanished. There was a murmur. Most of them in that church were repatriates from a neighbouring country. Therefore, they knew first-hand what it would be like to land in a strange place in a crisis situation. I continued with the homily trying to share with them my ideas of the first Christmas and how it was not that glorious as we celebrate it today.

After the Mass and in the subsequent years during Christmas Season this question would come back to me quite often… What would I have done if Mary and Joseph walked into the church where I was celebrating the Midnight Mass? Would I have stopped celebrating the Mass and helped the poor couple? I would have certainly done so, if - a BIG IF - IF I had known that they were Mary and Joseph and that Mary was about to give birth to Jesus, the only reason why I was celebrating the midnight Mass in the church. What better place than a church for Jesus to be born! What a truly blessed Christmas Mass it would turn out to be!

All these are lovely holy thoughts… but, the reality would be different. Unfortunately, I would have been as ignorant as the people around the altar. Therefore, in all probability, I would have suggested some alternate place, an alternate solution for the poor couple and proceeded with the Midnight Mass. Neither I nor the people in the church could be faulted for our decisions. We simply did not know that real Christmas was going to happen among us!

The people of Bethlehem too did not know that during the first Christmas. They were busy inviting and entertaining their kth and kin. Hence, “there was no place for them (for Joseph and Mary) in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) Every year when Christmas comes, the words – no place in the inn – invite us to take up a self-examination. Has this situation improved in the past 20 centuries? 

Thomas Merton once gave a wonderful commentary on the words – no place in the inn: Into this world, this demented inn, in which there is absolutely no room for Him at all, Christ has come uninvited. But because He cannot be at home in it, because He is out of place in it, and yet must be in it, His place is with those others for whom there is no room. His place is with those who do not belong, who are rejected by power because they are regarded as weak, those who are discredited, who are denied status as persons, who are tortured, bombed, and exterminated. With those for whom there is no room, Christ is present in the world. He is mysteriously present in those for whom there seems to be nothing but the world at its worst.

The statement “there was no place for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) usually makes us feel annoyed towards the people of Bethlehem, especially the inn-keeper, who refused a place for the birth of Jesus. IF they had known that the long-awaited Saviour was at their door, would they have refused a place? Most certainly not. If an angel with ‘a multitude of heavenly host’ had appeared before them and said: “Behold your Saviour!”, not only the people in the inn, but the whole of Bethlehem would have gathered around Mary and Joseph to give them and the New-born a royal welcome… The key words here are: if they had known… a BIG IF, indeed! The people of Bethlehem did not know them. On the first Christmas night, God slipped into the human family in the quietest way possible and surprised all of us. Down these 20 centuries, God keeps surprising us in various other ways year after year.

This was not the only surprise that Jesus had in store for the people of Israel. The most awaited message of thousands of years, namely, “Your Saviour is born” was given on this very same day, but not in the way the people of Israel had expected. This message was not trumpeted from the pinnacle of Jerusalem temple, but to the shepherds in the fields. Surprise, again! The choice of the shepherds as well as the message given to them are crucial to our understanding of Christmas.

Today’s Gospel begins with the solemn words… “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled… And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. (Luke 2:1,3) If the whole world was to be enrolled, then why were the shepherds out in the field? Were they not to be enrolled? In all probability they were not counted among the human race. That is why they were there as part of the cattle. To them this great message was given.

The message given by the angel goes like this: “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Lk. 2: 10-12)

Two groups of people mentioned in this message, help us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas… In the message of the angel, the ‘you’ (meaning, the shepherds) and ‘all the people’ are contrasted. I would like to rephrase the message of the angel in the following words: “Don’t be afraid, my shepherds. I have brought good news of great joy meant for all the people. But, the people are too busy and pre-occupied with so many things to receive this news. Therefore, I am bringing it to you. A Saviour is born for you and like you… on the fringes of the human society. There was no place for him in the inn. A babe is lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes. I am sure you will not miss the babe. I doubt whether the people would recognise a Saviour in this Babe. You would surely be able to recognise your Saviour easily. Go forth to meet your Saviour!”

While the town of Bethlehem was over crowded and the people were busy welcoming the arrival of their kith and kin, the shepherds went to the manger to welcome the Saviour of the world.  Do we have time and space to welcome the Saviour amidst the overcrowded Christmas programme?

Here is an imaginary scene, but could well happen to any one of us… Let us imagine a family where the father of the family has come home for Christmas after five years. He has been abroad, working hard. He has brought so many gifts. Children are overjoyed and have begun to decorate the house and the crib with all fancy stuff Daddy has brought. On Christmas night, Dad is bringing Baby Jesus to place Him in the crib… But, the crib is filled with so many things from abroad that there is no place for Baby Jesus there!

Is there room for the Saviour in our lives, or, are we too busy with Christmas decorations and gifts? Are we ready to recognise the Saviour lying in a manger wrapped in rags?

கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பு பெருவிழா

பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், சென்னையின் புறநகர் பகுதியில் இருந்த ஒரு கோவிலில் டிசம்பர் 24 இரவு கிறிஸ்மஸ் திருவிழிப்புத் திருப்பலியை நிகழ்த்தச் சென்றிருந்தேன். அந்தத் திருப்பலியின் நினைவு, ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும், கிறிஸ்மஸ் நாளன்று மனதில் எழும். நள்ளிரவுத் திருப்பலிக்கு வந்திருந்தவர்கள் கூட்டம் கோவிலை முற்றிலும் நிறைத்திருந்தது. கோவிலுக்கு வெளியிலும் மக்கள் கூட்டம். அனைவரும், திருவிழாவுக்கு ஏற்றவகையில் புத்தாடை உடுத்தியிருந்தனர். மறையுரை வழங்கும் நேரம் நெருங்கியது. பீடத்திலிருந்த வண்ணம் மக்களை நிமிர்ந்து பார்த்தேன். கோவிலின் நுழைவாசலையும் பார்த்தேன். அப்போது, திடீரென எனக்குள் ஓர் எண்ணம் உதித்தது. அந்த எண்ணத்தை ஒரு கேள்வியாக்கி, மறையுரையைத் துவக்கினேன்:

"அன்பார்ந்தவர்களே, நாம் இங்கே திருப்பலி நிகழ்த்திக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த நேரத்தில் இந்தக் கோவிலுக்குள் மரியாவும், யோசேப்பும் நுழைந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும்?" என்று கேட்டேன். கோவிலில் சலசலப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. பலர் முகத்தில் புன்னகை படர்ந்தது. ஒரு பெண்மணி சப்தமாகப் பதில் சொன்னார்: "ஓ, அது பெரிய பாக்கியமாக இருக்கும். அதைப்போல ஒரு சந்தோசம் இருக்கவே முடியாது." என்று சொன்னார். அவர் சொன்னதை ஆமோதிப்பதுபோல் பலர் தலை அசைத்தனர். ஒரு சிலர் இலேசாகக் கரவொலியும் எழுப்பினர்.

"அவ்வளவு அவசரமாக, ஆர்வமாகப் பதில் சொல்லிவிடாதீர்கள். கொஞ்சம் சிந்தித்துப் பாருங்கள்" என்று அவர்களுக்கு ஓர் எச்சரிக்கை கொடுத்துவிட்டு, நான் தொடர்ந்தேன்:  "நம்மிடையே வந்திருப்பது அன்னை மரியா, புனித யோசேப்பு என்று நிச்சயமாகத் தெரிந்தால், ஒருவேளை நீங்கள் சொல்வதுபோல் மகிழலாம். ஆனால், கோவிலுக்குள் வந்திருக்கும் இருவரும் நமக்கு அறிமுகமில்லாதவர்கள். அவர்கள் ஊருக்குப் புதியவர்கள். பார்க்க பரிதாபமாக இருக்கிறார்கள். மூன்று அல்லது நான்கு நாட்கள் பகலும் இரவும் கடினமான பயணம் செய்து வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். சரியாக உண்ணாமல், உறங்காமல் வந்திருக்கும் அவர்களது உடையெல்லாம் அழுக்கும் புழுதியுமாய் இருக்கிறது. அவர்கள் குளித்து நாட்கள் ஆகிவிட்டன.” 

 

பல மைல் தூரம் நடைபயணத்தை மேற்கொண்ட மரியாவையும், யோசேப்புவையும் நினைக்கும்போது, நம் எண்ணங்கள் 2020ம் ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதத்தை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கின்றன. கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்றை தடுக்கும் ஒரு முயற்சியாக இந்தியாவில் விதிக்கப்பட்ட முழு அடைப்பு நாள்களை நாம் மறந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை. முழு அடைப்பு காலத்தில், வறுமைப்பட்ட தொழிலாளிகள், தங்கள் மனைவி மற்றும் குழந்தைகளுடன் பல மைல் தூரம் நடந்தே சென்ற காட்சிகள் நம் உள்ளங்களில் இன்னும் பதிந்துள்ளன. அத்தகைய வறியோர் குழுவைச் சேர்ந்த ஓர் இளம் தம்பதியர், இரண்டு மூன்று நாள்கள் நடந்து நம் கோவிலிக்குள் நுழைந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று கற்பனை செய்து பார்ப்போம்.

நள்ளிரவுத் திருப்பலியில் நான் தொடர்நது விவரங்களைத் தந்தேன்: “இவை எல்லாவற்றையும் விட அந்தப் பெண் நிறைமாத கர்ப்பிணி வேறு. எந்த நேரத்திலும் குழந்தை பிறக்கலாம் எனற நிலை. ஒருவேளை அந்தப் பெண்ணுக்கு பேறுகால வேதனை ஆரம்பித்திருக்கலாம். எனவேதான் யோசேப்பு அருகில் கோவிலைக் கண்டதும், அந்தப் பெண்ணுடன் அங்கு நுழைந்துவிட்டார்" என்று நான் அந்தக் காட்சியை விவரிக்க, விவரிக்க அவர்களிடையே ஆரம்பத்தில் உருவான சலசலப்பு, சிரிப்பு எல்லாம் அடங்கிவிட்டன. கொஞ்சம் இறுக்கமான அமைதி அங்கு நிலவியது. தொடர்ந்து நான் மறையுரையில், முதல் கிறிஸ்மஸ் நிகழ்ந்தபோது மரியா, யோசேப்பு, குழந்தை இயேசு ஆகிய மூவரும் சந்தித்த பிரச்சனைகளை அவர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்தேன்.

ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா நெருங்கும்போது, அந்தத் திருப்பலி என் நினைவுக்கு வரும். அந்த மக்களிடம் கேட்ட அந்தக் கேள்வியை எனக்கு நானே கேட்டு, விடை தேட முயன்றிருக்கிறேன். நான் கிறிஸ்மஸ் திருப்பலி நிகழ்த்திக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, மரியாவும் யோசேப்பும் கோவிலுக்குள் வந்தால் நான் என்ன செய்திருப்பேன்? திருப்பலியை நிறுத்திவிட்டு அவர்களுக்கு உதவிகள் செய்யப் போயிருப்பேனா? நிச்சயமாக... அவர்கள் மரியா, யோசேப்பு என்று தெரிந்தால், கட்டாயம் அவர்களுக்கு உதவிகள் செய்யப் போயிருப்பேன். குழந்தை இயேசு பிறந்ததும், அக்குழந்தையுடன் மீண்டும் கோவிலுக்கு வந்து திருப்பலியைத் தொடர்ந்திருப்பேன்.

இப்படி நான் உறுதியாகச் சொல்வதற்கு ஒரே ஒரு காரணம் தான் உண்டு. அவர்கள் மரியா, யோசேப்பு என்றும், பிறக்கப் போவது இயேசு என்றும் முன்கூட்டியே தெரிந்திருந்தால் இவற்றையெல்லாம் நான் நிச்சயம் செய்திருப்பேன். ஆனால், வந்திருக்கும் இவர்கள் இருவரும் என் கண்ணுக்கு சாதாரண, எளிய, வேற்றூர் மக்கள் என்பது மட்டும் தானே தெரிகிறது. இந்தச் சூழலில் என்ன செய்திருப்பேன்?

கோவில் பணியாளரை, பங்குப் பேரவையில் இருப்பவர்களை பீடத்திற்கு அழைத்து, ஓர் அவசர ஆலோசனை நடத்தி, அவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் வேறு ஏதாவது வகையில் உதவிகள் கிடைக்க வழி செய்துவிட்டு, என் திருப்பலியை நான் தொடர்ந்திருப்பேன்.

அவர்கள் இருவரும் மரியா, யோசேப்பு என்று நிச்சயமாகத் தெரிந்திருந்தால், ஒரு வகை செயல்பாடுகள். அவர்கள் யார் என்று தெரியாத சூழலில், வேறொரு வகை செயல்பாடுகள். இதுதான் முதல் கிறிஸ்மஸ் அன்று பெத்லகேம் ஊரில் நடந்தது. இதைத் தான் இன்று நாம் நற்செய்தியில் வாசிக்கிறோம். மரியாவும், யோசேப்பும் பெத்லகேம் ஊரை அடைந்து இடம் தேடுகிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு இடம் இல்லை. "அவர்கள் அங்கு இருந்தபொழுது மரியாவுக்குப் பேறுகாலம் வந்தது. அவர் தம் தலைமகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார். விடுதியில் அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை. எனவே பிள்ளையைத் துணிகளில் பொதிந்து தீவனத் தொட்டியில் கிடத்தினார்." (லூக்கா 2: 6-7)

‘விடுதியில் அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை’ என்ற சொற்கள், ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவன்று, நமக்கு பல்வேறு அர்த்தங்களைக் கொடுத்து, நம்மையே மீண்டும், மீண்டும் ஆன்ம ஆய்வுசெய்வதற்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கின்றன. புனித பெனடிக்ட் துறவு சபையின் ஆழ்நிலை தியானப் பிரிவாக விளங்கும் Trappist சபையின் துறவியும், சிறந்த ஆன்மீக எழுத்தாளருமான Thomas Merton என்பவர், ‘விடுதியில் அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை’ என்ற நற்செய்தி சொற்களுக்கு அழகியதொரு விளக்கம் அளித்துள்ளார்: “மதியிழந்த வண்ணம் செயல்பட்டுவரும் இந்த உலகம் என்ற விடுதியில் கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு இடம் இல்லை. அவர் இவ்வுலகிற்கு அழையாத விருந்தினராக வந்துள்ளார். தனக்கு இவ்வுலகில் இடமில்லை என்பது தெரிந்தும், அவர் இவ்வுலகிற்கு வந்தார். தன்னைப்போலவே இவ்வுலகில் இடமின்றி இருக்கும் மக்கள் நடுவில் தன் இடத்தை அவர் தெரிவு செய்துகொண்டார். சக்திவாய்ந்தவர்களால் புறம்தள்ளப் பட்டவர்கள் நடுவில், மனிதர்கள் என்ற மாண்பு மறுக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் நடுவில், வன்முறைகளால் வதைக்கப்பட்டு, தாக்கப்பட்டு, அனைத்தையும் இழந்தவர்கள் நடுவில், கிறிஸ்து தன் இடத்தைத் தெரிவு செய்துள்ளார். அனைத்து வழிகளிலும் இவ்வுலகில் இடமில்லை என்று ஒதுக்கிவைக்கப் பட்டவர்கள் நடுவே கிறிஸ்து இவ்வுலகில் பிரசன்னமாகியிருக்கிறார்.”

‘விடுதியில் அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை’ என்ற சொற்களை நற்செய்தியில் வாசிக்கும்போதெல்லாம், நம்மில் பலர், பெத்லகேம் மக்கள்மீது, முக்கியமாக அந்த விடுதி காப்பாளர்மீது கோபப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம். நமது கோபம் நியாயமா? அவர்களும் நம்மைப் போல்தானே. தங்களிடம் இடம் கேட்டு வந்திருப்பது மரியா, யோசேப்பு என்றும், பிறக்கப் போகும் குழந்தைதான் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் ஆயிரம் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளாய் காத்திருக்கும் மீட்பர் என்றும் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரிந்திருந்தால், அந்த விடுதி மட்டுமல்ல, பெத்லகேம் நகரம் முழுவதும் அங்கு திரண்டு வநது, அந்தப் பரிதாபமான வழிப்போக்கர்களை வரவேற்றிருப்பார்களே!

பரிதாபமான வழிப்போக்கர்களின் வழியாக இறைவன் வருவதை அவர்கள் உணர வில்லை... ஈராயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து, சென்னைப் புறநகர் பகுதி கோவிலுக்கு அந்த வழிப்போக்கர்கள் மீண்டும் வந்திருந்தால், அவர்களை நானோ, அங்கு கூடியிருந்த மக்களோ, உணர்ந்திருப்போமா என்பதும் சந்தேகம்தான்.

"இவர்தான் உலக மீட்பர்" என்று வானதூதர் அணி எக்காளம் ஒலித்து பெத்லகேமில் அறிவித்திருந்தால், மீட்பின் வரலாறு வித்தியாசமாக இருந்திருக்கும். ஆனால், எவ்வித முன்னறிவிப்பும் இல்லாமல், விளம்பரமும் இல்லாமல், இறைவன் நம்மில் ஒருவராக, எம்மானுவேலாக வந்து, நம்மை ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியதுதான் கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பின் அழகு.

முதல் கிறிஸ்மஸ் அன்று இயேசு தந்தது இந்த ஆச்சரியம் மட்டுமல்ல. "இவர்தான் உலக மீட்பர்" என்று வானதூதர் அறிவித்திருக்கலாமே என்று எண்ணுகிறோமே அந்த எண்ணமும் நிறைவேறியது. "இவர்தான் உலக மீட்பர்" என்று வானதூதர் அறிவித்தனர். ஆனால், நாம் எதிர்ப்பார்த்ததுபோல் ஊருக்கு நடுவே எக்காளம் ஒலித்து இந்தச் செய்தி சொல்லப்படவில்லை. மாறாக, ஊருக்கு வெளியே, மந்தைகளோடு, குளிரில் நடுங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த இடையர்களுக்கு, வானதூதர், இந்தச் செய்தியைச் சொன்னார். இதுவும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் தரும் ஓர் ஆச்சரியம்தான்.

இந்த இடையர்களைப் பற்றியும், அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட நற்செய்தியைப் பற்றியும் கொஞ்சம் சிந்திப்போம். ஊருக்குள் மக்கள் கணக்கெடுப்பு நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அவரவர் தங்கள் பூர்வீக ஊரை, உறவைத் தேடிச்சென்று பெயர்களைப் பதிவு செய்யவேண்டும். எனவேதான் “தாவீதின் வழிமரபினரான யோசேப்பும், தமக்கு மண ஒப்பந்தமான மரியாவோடு, பெயரைப் பதிவுசெய்ய, கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள நாசரேத்து ஊரிலிருந்து யூதேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்லகேம் என்ற தாவீதின் ஊருக்குச் சென்றார்.” (லூக்கா 2:5) என்று நற்செய்தியில் இன்று வாசிக்கிறோம். இப்படி ஊர் விட்டு ஊர் சென்று தங்கள் பெயர்களை மக்கள் பதிவு செய்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது, இடையர்கள் ஏன் எங்கும் செல்லவில்லை? மக்கள் கணக்கெடுப்பு என்கிறோம். அப்படியானால், இவர்கள் மக்கள் கணக்கில் சேர்க்கப்படாதவர்களா?

இவர்கள், மனித சமுதாயத்தில் இருக்க தகுதியற்றவர்கள் என்று அன்றைய சமுதாயம் ஒதுக்கிவைத்துவிட்டதால், இவர்கள், ஆடுகளோடு தங்களை ஒருங்கிணைத்து, சமுதாயத்தின் விளிம்பில் கிடந்தனர். அவர்களைத் தேடி, வானதூதர் வந்து, உலகிற்கெல்லாம் மகிழ்வைத் தரக்கூடிய நற்செய்தியை முதல் முறையாகப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறார். மனிதர்கள் என்ற தகுதி கூட இல்லாமல், சமுதாயத்தின் கடைசி இடத்தில், விளிம்பில் வாழ்ந்தவர்களுக்கு கடவுள் முதலிடம் கொடுத்து ஒரு முக்கியமான செய்தியைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறார்.

அவர்களுக்கு வானதூதர் சொல்லும் வார்த்தைகளும் நம் சிந்தனையைத் தூண்டுகின்றன. “அஞ்சாதீர்கள், இதோ, எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சியூட்டும் நற்செய்தியை உங்களுக்கு அறிவிக்கிறேன். இன்று ஆண்டவராகிய மெசியா என்னும் மீட்பர் உங்களுக்காகத் தாவீதின் ஊரில் பிறந்திருக்கிறார். குழந்தையைத் துணிகளில் சுற்றித் தீவனத் தொட்டியில் கிடத்தியிருப்பதைக் காண்பீர்கள்; இதுவே உங்களுக்கு அடையாளம்” (லூக்கா 2: 10-11). இந்தச் செய்தியில், வானதூதர், ‘எல்லா மக்கள்’ என்று ஓரிடத்திலும், இடையர்களுக்குச் சிறப்பிடம் அளித்து ‘உங்களுக்கு, உங்களுக்காக’ என்று ஒருசில இடங்களிலும் பேசுகிறார்.

வானதூதர் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளை நாம் இவ்விதம் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். "அன்பு இடையர்களே, எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தரும் நற்செய்தியை உங்களுக்கு அறிவிக்கிறேன். இந்த செய்தி எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் உரியதுதான். ஆனால், இதைக் கேட்கும் நிலையில் மக்கள் இல்லை. அவர்கள் தங்கள் உறவினர்களை வரவேற்பதில், விருந்துண்பதில் எல்லா கவனத்தையும் செலுத்திவிட்டார்கள். இந்தச் செய்தியைப் பெறுவதற்கு அவர்கள் மனதில் இடம் இல்லை. எனவேதான் இந்தச் செய்தியை உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். இந்த மீட்பர் உங்களுக்காகப் பிறந்துள்ளார். அவரை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்வதும் உங்களுக்கு எளிது. ஏனெனில் அவரும் உங்களைப்போல் சமுதாயத்தின் விளிம்பில் பிறந்துள்ளார். தீவனத்தொட்டியில் துணிகளில் பொதிந்து கிடக்கும் அந்தக் குழந்தையில் இறைவனை உங்களால் எளிதில் அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியும். உங்கள் மீட்பரைச் சந்திக்கச் செல்லுங்கள்" வானதூதர் சொன்னச் செய்தியில், இந்த அர்த்தங்கள் பொதிந்திருப்பதை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

தங்களை மீட்பவர் வருவார் வருவார் என்று பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் காத்திருந்த இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள், அவர் வந்தபோது, அவரை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாமல் போனது. நாமும் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவைக் கொண்டாடும்போது, கிறிஸ்துவை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாமல், அவரை இழந்துவிட வாய்ப்புண்டு. இதோ ஒரு கற்பனைக் காட்சி...

ஐந்தாண்டுகள் கழித்து, அயல்நாட்டிலிருந்து அப்பா கிறிஸ்மஸுக்கு வீட்டுக்கு வந்துள்ளார். வீட்டில் அனைவருக்கும் ஏகப்பட்ட மகிழ்ச்சி. எல்லாருக்கும் பல்வேறு பரிசுப்பொருட்கள் வாங்கி வந்துள்ளார் அப்பா. கிறிஸ்மஸ் அலங்காரங்களும் விதவிதமாக வாங்கி வந்துள்ளார். கிறிஸ்மஸ் குடில் ஒன்று செய்து, பல்வேறு அழகான பொம்மைகள், பூக்கள் என்று அப்பா வாங்கி வந்திருந்த அலங்காரப் பொருட்களால் அந்தக் குடில் முழுவதையும் நிறைத்தனர் அவரது குழந்தைகள். இறுதியில் அந்தக் குடிலில் குழந்தை இயேசுவை வைக்கவேண்டும்… அவ்வளவுதான். குழந்தை இயேசுவை அங்கு கொண்டுவந்தபோதுதான் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தது, அவரை வைக்க அங்கு இடமில்லை என்று... அவ்வளவு தூரம் அவர்கள் அந்தக் குடிலை பல்வேறு அலங்காரப் பொருட்களால் நிறைத்திருந்தனர்.

சமுதாயத்தின் நடுவில் சகல மரியாதைகளுடன், பெரும் ஆரவாரத்துடன் நம் இறைவன் பிறக்காமல், சமுதாயத்தின் விளிம்பில் பிறக்கத் தீர்மானித்தார். அவர் பிறப்பதற்கு விடுதியில் இடமில்லை என்பதை விட, விடுதியில் இடம் வேண்டாம் என்று தீர்மானித்து, சமுதாயத்தின் விளிம்பில் பிறந்தார். தான் பிறந்த செய்தியையும் சமுதாயத்தின் விளிம்பில் வாழ்ந்த இடையர்களுடன் முதன் முதலாகப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

இந்தக் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவில் குழந்தை இயேசுவை வழக்கமான நம் ஆலய வழிபாடுகள் மத்தியிலும், கிறிஸ்மஸ் அலங்காரங்கள் மத்தியிலும் மட்டும் அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ளாமல், சமுதாயத்தின் ஓரங்களில் வாழ்வோர் நடுவிலும் அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள தேவையான அருளை வேண்டுவோம். தீவனத் தொட்டியில் துணிகளில் பொதிந்து கிடப்பதுதான் உலக மீட்பர். இதை இன்றும் நம்ப முயல்வோம்.
