WORDS THAT WORK MIRACLES…

In every miracle of Jesus, the very act of healing is only one part – perhaps a minor part. The situation, the people involved, the changes that take place… these form the major part. Major, because these can teach us some lessons and help us gain some insights. Keeping this in mind, I invite you to consider the miracle of Jesus healing the centurion’s servant. Jesus is the hero of this miracle. No second opinions about it. The second hero of this incident is the centurion. His famous words: “I am not worthy… say the word…” has become a lovely prayer used during Holy Mass. Here is the gospel passage that talks about this event.

LUKE 7:1-10
After Jesus had finished teaching all this to the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave who was highly regarded, but who was sick and at the point of death. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they urged him earnestly, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, because he loves our nation, and even built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not presume to come to you. Instead, say the word, and my servant must be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to this one, ‘Go’, and he goes, and to another, ‘Come’, and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this’, and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him. He turned and said to the crowd that followed him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith!” So when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave well.

This event is recorded in both Matthew and Luke soon after the sermon on the mount. Are these evangelists trying to suggest that this event is a practical demonstration of some of the deep lessons that Jesus preached on the mount?
Let’s enlist the qualities of the centurion:
He is a Roman centurion.
He has high regards for his slave.
He loves the Jews and has built a synagogue for them.
He does not misuse his power and does not overstep his limits; he is humble.
He has deep faith in Jesus, the Word.
All these qualities made Jesus exclaim: “Not even in Israel have I found such faith!”.

A Roman centurion usually rises in ranks. He is in the forefront in every war. In every battle centurions die in great number. In short, we can say that a centurion has no fear. Our hero does not have fear for life as well as fear for his position. If he feared his position, he would not have approached Jesus, a Jew. The centurion approaches Jesus in broad daylight sending delegations. I don’t think Rome would have seen this in a favourable light. He does not bother about this. He is very keen on having his slave healed – the slave he respected.
Kind hearted people in high ranks usually show love, concern or pity on those who serve them. But very rarely do we see any of them respecting their slaves. In general, who are those who can respect other human beings? They are those who can respect themselves. Those who have known and accepted their own selves, can also accept others and respect them. Our hero respected his salve. This means that he was very comfortable with himself in the first place. Blessed are those who can respect themselves, for they will respect others.
This respect for himself and others leads our hero to be kind to the Jews, even to the point of building a synagogue for them. Most of the Romans considered the Jews as their rivals and the Jewish God as a rival of Caesar. This centurion is so self-assured that he does not consider the Jews or their God as his rival.
Kindly allow me to digress here. When I think of the centurion building a synagogue for the Jews, I think of those who raise monuments or statues for themselves or for their leaders. Kings and big leaders have done this throughout human history. These attempts to leave their names on stones, monuments or leave their images on statues are a poor substitute for having their names etched in the hearts and minds of the people. Did the centurion inscribe his name on the synagogue? I don’t think so. Digression, over.
The centurion had a perfect assessment of his own self. Hence, he did not attempt to impose himself on Jesus. He sent some of his Jewish friends to accomplish the task. If he were a ‘regular’ centurion, he would have sent his soldiers and, perhaps, a chariot to fetch Jesus. Would Jesus have obliged the centurion in such a situation? Nope… He would not have ‘bent his knees before insolent might’. The centurion has probably understood Jesus better than even the Jews. Hence, this delegation.
As Jesus is on his way to meet the centurion, he sends another delegation, another message – a message that is deep and enlightening. The original text is given in the passage above. I wish to ‘translate’ it thus: “Sir, please don’t trouble yourself in coming to my house. I don’t think you need to come here to heal my servant. Wherever you are, just say a word… I have experienced the power of words in my life. Single word commands of mine are translated into action by my soldiers day after day. I know the power of words… Hence, kindly say a word and my servant will be healed.” A lovely prayer, indeed!
This ‘prayer’ of the centurion gives us a chance to reflect on the power of words. I am sure all of us have seen the power of words in our lives – words used in context, out of context, words used in joy and, more especially words used in rage…
The words of Jesus are powerful. They are especially loaded with the power to heal. How happy we would be, how happy our world would be that at the end of each day we don’t regret any word that left our lips. Let the words of Jesus heal us so that we, in turn, can heal others with our words.

தாகூர் எழுதிய "This is my prayer to Thee " என்ற ஒரு கவிதையின் வரிகள் நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றன. "Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knees before insolent might " "இறைவா, இதுவே என் ஜெபம்" என்று ஆரம்பிக்கும் தாகூரின் வேண்டுதல்களில் ஒன்று: "தன்னிலை மறந்து தலைகனம் மிகுந்தோரின் சக்திக்கு முன்னால் நான் ஒரு போதும் முழந்தாள் படியிட்டு பணியாத வரம் வேண்டும்."

THAT I MAY SEE AGAIN…

“Calling by name” and “Having proper perspective” are two ideas that crossed my mind when I read today’s Gospel. Here is the Gospel for the day:

MARK 10: 46-52 - Healing Blind Bartimaeus
They came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many scolded him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the road.

All the three synoptic gospels record this event. Only in Mark the visually challenged person is given an identity - Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus. Usually, in gospel miracles, the patients are mentioned by general terms: leprosy patient, one possessed, the paralytic, the deaf and mute… Hence, this miracle as seen by Mark gives us an opportunity to reflect on ‘being called by name’. Already in one of my earlier reflections, namely, Jesus transforming Zacchaeus, I had mentioned about the beauty of being called by name. (Kindly check my earlier post - HE GAVE MY NAME BACK TO ME...) Here is another opportunity to reflect on the same idea, especially from the point of view of how by calling someone by name, that person who is usually looked upon as a thing, a furniture… blossoms into a PERSON!
We know that the name given to us at birth is an identity we carry life-long. This identity is precious provided our names are cherished by people around us. But for many of us, this identity gets twisted, mangled, tarnished, broken, shattered… So, there are two sides to this coin ‘calling by name’.
First the bright side of the coin: In the medical profession, the person who becomes a doctor, is often called by the title ‘doctor’ than by the name. The same goes for teacher, professor, police inspector etc… These professional titles almost replace the names of the individual. For a judge in the court, a more respectable title ‘my lord’ is added. Such practices are followed in religious circles too. The titles: Father, Brother, Sister, My Lord, Your Grace… All of these titles can make one forget one’s name. I guess the identity of the profession is so respectful that these persons do not mind losing the identity they acquired at birth – the identity of their own names.
Now, the darker side of the coin: How do we call those who do menial services like sweeping the streets, mending shoes, cleaning vessels and clothes in our houses? Are they called by their ‘profession’? Do we consider these works as ‘profession’ at all? Do we call these individuals by their names? Do we take the effort to know the names of these persons? Hardly… For most of us those who are involved in these hard labours simply belong to the group of “Hei, you”.
In every institution that I served or visited, I made it a point to learn the names of those who were doing services like the receptionist, the table boys, the sweepers, the peons… and called them by name. I have enjoyed the smile my effort brought to their faces. In the midst of an avalanche of ‘hei, you’s, my attempt to call them by name, surely made a difference.
There is a special power behind calling someone by name, especially those who serve us in different ways… Try it. You won’t regret this effort!

The second idea that we can derive from this gospel is “getting a proper perspective”.
Bartimaeus could not see with his physical eyes. But he had a better perspective of Jesus – calling him by the special title: Jesus, son of David. This title will be used by thousands in Jerusalem when Jesus entered that city on Palm Sunday. This is an insight that Bartimaeus had even before receiving his bodily sight. He could see with the eyes of the heart… the eyes of faith. The lovely lines of Helen Keller is enlightening: “The most beautiful things in the world can’t be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” I am sure Helen Keller knew what she was talking about.
Let me remind you of two stories that talk about the power of seeing with the heart and having proper perspective. Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city’s skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. He was thoroughly shocked. The nurse asked him why he looked so shocked. He recounted all that had happened in that room with his neighbour. What the nurse told him made him freeze in further shock. The nurse said that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. This visually challenged person could see beyond the wall… just to make life easier for his companion.
The other story also has some connection with a window. Husband and wife move into a new home. The next day morning, the lady sips her coffee and sees through her glass window the backyard of the next house. She then calls her husband and tells him, “Oh, our neighbour doesn’t know how to wash clothes. See, how dirty they are.” This complaint goes on for three days. On the fourth day, the lady is surprised to see the washed clothes all spick and span. She called her husband and said: “Our neighbour must have heard my comments. Today she has done a good job of washing her clothes.” The husband said, “Honey, this morning I cleaned our window panes.”

Getting a proper perspective is a gift from God. Let us ask along with Bartimaeus, “Rabbi, let me see again.”

கண் பார்வை இல்லாமல், காது கேளாமல், வாய் பேசாமல் இருந்த ஹெலன் கெல்லெர் கூறிய அழக்கான சொற்கள்: “The most beautiful things in the world can’t be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

SORROW GATHERS… JOY SCATTERS…

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.
One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."
(Luke 17: 11-19)

Dear friends, just to remind you of what we have been sharing for the past few weeks… We have been reflecting on the different miracles that have been recorded by Luke. For the past two weeks, of course, we have expanded the idea of ‘miracle’ to include Jesus’ transfiguration and Jesus transforming Zacchaeus. Today we are back to one of the healing miracles of Jesus - Jesus curing ten leprosy patients.
This miracle is recorded only by Luke. We know that Luke’s Gospel is called the Gospel of Compassion. Luke has given Samaritans, sinners, shepherds, tax collectors, women and children their due place in his Gospel. Luke must have added this miracle just to highlight the attitude of the Samaritan who returns to give thanks to Jesus. We have already discussed Jesus curing one leprosy patient. That is placed right at the beginning of the public life of Jesus. Now, this miracle of curing ten leprosy patients comes at the fag end of his public life.
We shall begin our reflections on a ‘miracle’ that was already taking place when the ten leprosy patients approached Jesus. The opening lines of the gospel passage gives us a clue to this ‘miracle’. Jesus was going along the border between Samaria and Galilee. This means that this was a place where Jews and Samaritans were present. From this area ten men who had leprosy met Jesus. Were they Jews? Samaritans? No idea. They were leprosy patients. That was their main identity. Probably, both Jews and Samaritans banished them from their communities. This rejection from the community brought them together.
We can surely think of moments when pain, misfortune and disaster bring people together irrespective of their caste and creed. I recall one such experience from my life. It was 1977 when St Joseph’s college, Trichy, where I was studying, was flooded. Those who had lost their houses took refuge in St Joseph’s. For the next few days they shared the college building, shared the food packets distributed by the government. The flood waters not only brought down the walls of their houses, but also the walls of their social structures. Unfortunately, when the floods receded, they had rebuilt those walls, I guess.
All of us still remember 9/11 of 2001. Many write ups were published in the web about this tragedy. One of those write-ups was about how this tragedy brought the people of New York and, perhaps, the whole of the US together. Here is a passage written by Cheryl Sawyer, a professor.
An Inspiring Poem
As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.
As we lit candles of waiting and hope,
We became one generation.
As the firefighters and police officers fought their way into the inferno,
We became one gender.
As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.
As we whispered or shouted words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.
As we gave our blood in lines a mile long,
We became one body.
As we mourned together the great loss,
We became one family.
As we cried tears of grief and loss,
We became one soul.
As we retell with pride of the sacrifice of heroes,
We become one people.

Pain and tragedy bring people together. The artificial lines we draw among the human family are erased when we face a disaster. But, as and when the tragedy passes, the old battle lines are re-drawn. This was the case among the ten persons afflicted with leprosy. They were sharing one identity – leprosy patients, when they met Jesus. But when they were cured of their bodily ailment, their soul became sick. They probably did not want to take the Samaritan along with them when they went to meet the priests. The Samaritan probably understood their predicament. He did not want to embarrass them in front of the priests. So, he went back to Jesus. Jesus was both happy and sad to see the Samaritan. Happy, because he saw a grateful person. Sad, because this Samaritan was, once again, isolated.

Another point to consider in this miracle is the idea of thanksgiving. The world has two classes of people – ones who are thankful and others who are not. What is the proportion of these groups? One to nine… the Gospel tells us today. If we examine our daily thoughts, the same proportion is maintained. Namely, when one thankful thought enters our hearts, there are nine other thoughts of problems and perils that choke this.
I would like to end my reflections on two thoughts: Meister Eckhart wrote wisely, "The most important prayer in the world is just two words long: Thank you." Yet, we live in a society in which those words are coming to be used less frequently not only to God but to one another.
Another quote goes this way: "God has two homes - one in heaven and the other in a thankful heart."

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.
As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.

"The most important prayer in the world is just two words long: Thank you" Meister Eckhart
இன்னொமொரு அழகான கூற்று: "God has two homes - one in heaven and the other is a thankful heart" கடவுள் வாழும் இல்லங்கள் இரண்டு.

CHAIR / CROSS = THRONE...

This Sunday’s Gospel (Mark 10:35-45) is about a choice – Chair or Cross? Boss or Servant? Of course, our Christian instincts tell us to choose the latter. Instincts alone can’t take us far. We need convictions. Take up the cross? Yes. Carry the Cross? Okay… Be nailed to the cross? May be… Be nailed to it for hours, days, … for ever? Well, let me think about it!
I think both a Chair and a Cross are thrones. Chair with a capital C denotes the chair of power. There have been many who have died for a Chair and many more who have killed for a Chair. We also know that many have been killed on a cross and many have died for the Cross.
Here is an incident recorded by a priest who offered to work with Mother Teresa when she was in Kolkatta. I am taking this incident as related by Fr Joseph Pellegrino in his homily (http://homilies.net): “Fr. John Fullenbach is a professor of ecclesiology in Rome. One year he had a lot of time between the semesters he was teaching, so he decided to go to India and work alongside Mother Theresa and her sisters. He relates that he felt very good about himself on the plane on the way to India. That feeling did not last one full day. The first day he went to volunteer, one of the sisters asked him to join her walking through a very difficult section of Calcutta. It was the place where the poorest were dropped off to die. When they got there, a frail woman begged the sister and Fr. Fullenbach to follow her. She led them to an elderly man, probably her husband, spending his last few days lying in filth. Fr. Fullenbach bent over the man to reassure him and tell him they would take him indoors to a comfortable place to rest. As he bent down, the man spit in Father’s face. True story. Fr. Fullenbach was furious. He came all the way from Rome for this? He was a famous theologian and author. But he swallowed hard, picked up the man and brought him to the empty warehouse the sisters had made into a hospice. It was nothing more than a huge room with cots. There Fr. Fullenbach cleaned the man and fed him. But the entire time he was angry that this man should behave so badly towards him. Fr. Fullenbach was being taught humility. It was more important for him to help the man than for the man to be grateful.”
Fr Pellegrino goes on to talk about how Fr Fullenbach learnt a lot more lessons during his stay with Mother Teresa. I remember another incident related in connection with the Mother. Once a journalist spent one full day with Mother Teresa and at the end of the day he seemed to have said that even if he was offered ten thousand dollars, he would not be able to do that work. The Mother seemed to have said: “Neither will I do this for ten thousand dollars.”
Ten thousand dollars is nothing compared to the throne Mother Teresa has set up in the hearts of millions of people around the world. Not only she… There are many more selfless persons who have chosen the cross and hence are enthroned in many hearts.
Dear friends, Servant Leadership is a concept that has gained momentum in quite a few companies and institutions around the world. I think even business schools have begun to teach this! My curiosity about Servant Leadership led me to Wikipedia. I felt good reading in that site that the wisdom from the east – India and China – has helped the west to think about Servant Leadership. The quote from Chanakya’s Arthashastra is quite enlightening:
“The king (leader) shall consider as good, not what pleases himself but what pleases his subjects… The king (leader) is a paid servant and enjoys the resources of the state together with the people.”
The leader is a paid servant… Most of our ministers call themselves 'public servants'. According to Chanakya, they are expected to enjoy the resources of the state TOGETHER WITH THE PEOPLE. We in India lost this wisdom somewhere along the way.
I am sure many of us have read (or at least have heard of) two books - If Aristotle Ran General Motors and If Harry Potter Ran General Electric by Tom Morris. I am thinking of another title If Chanakya Ran Indian Republic. It would really be fun! Now, where was I? Oh, yes. Servant Leadership.
The Chinese wisdom is again quite significant. There are passages that relate to servant leadership in the Tao Te Ching, attributed to Lao-Tzu, who is believed to have lived in China sometime between 570 B.C. and 490 B.C.:
“The highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware. Next comes one whom they love and praise. Next comes one whom they fear. Next comes one whom they despise and defy. When you are lacking in faith, Others will be unfaithful to you. The Sage is self-effacing and scanty of words. When his task is accomplished and things have been completed, all the people say, ‘We ourselves have achieved it!’”
After quoting Chanakya and Lao-Tzu, Wikipedia quotes Jesus and the passage from Mark which we heard in today’s liturgy is cited.
Jesus urged his followers to be servants first. He told his followers:
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28; also Mark 10:42-45)

Last week, I spoke about Warren Buffett. Pardon me for going back to him. To me, he is a sign that reads loud and clear: ALL IS NOT LOST. TAKE COURAGE. Although he is rated as the second richest person in the world, he does not impose himself as one.
Here is some relevant material from an article Warren Buffet: Humblest Billionaire on Earth
“According to a report, he lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, which he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. Amazingly, it is reported that he drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him. Because of his genuine love and tremendous financial and moral supports he offers to the needy and humanity around the world, he doesn’t fear danger as his house does not have a wall or a fence. The report adds that 'he does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television'.
If that is incredibly unbelievable, then take this: 'Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk and never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.' Yet with an estimated current net worth over US$50 billion, his 2006 annual salary of about $100,000 is infinitesimal by all standards compare to remuneration of other CEOs in similar and relatively smaller companies.
There is also a report that Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.
Another report states that Buffet bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late! At age 14 he bought a small farm with savings from delivering newspapers. Today his company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. He has given his CEO's only two rules. Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money. Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.
His popular advice to young people, which is variously quoted is that: ‘Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself and Remember: Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money; live your life as simple as you are; don't do what others say, just listen to them, but do what you feel is good; don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which you feel is comfortable; don't waste your money on unnecessary things, just spend on what you really need . After all it's your life then why give chance to others to rule your life.’”

I feel that both Mother Teresa and Warren Buffett hold a special place in humanity. Some may feel bad that I have spoken of Mother and Warren Buffett in the same breath. I would like you to see both of them in our context – Servant Leadership.
Well, dear friends, Chair and Cross are signs of getting enthroned. The way to the Chair is overcrowded. You may have to step on others’ toes and sometimes may have to crush others under your feet. The way to the Cross, on the other hand, will be relatively free. The choice is yours!

"The king shall consider as good, not what pleases himself but what pleases his subjects. The king is a paid servant and enjoys the resources of the state together with the people."

HE GAVE MY NAME BACK TO ME…

Last week we considered Transfiguration as a miracle. Now, I invite you to consider transformation as a miracle - the transformation of Zacchaeus. Luke’s Gospel alone talks of this encounter of Jesus with Zacchaeus.
Luke 19:1-10 (New International Version)
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

When I reflected on Transfiguration, (COCOON + STRUGGLE = BUTTERFLY) I posted these lines: Usually, Transfiguration of Jesus (Luke, 9: 28-36) is not considered as a miracle. But, I have taken this incident and have tried to see it as a miracle, a miracle that happens to all of us. What can happen to all of us is what happened to Zacchaeus – transformation… and hence, a miracle!
Here is how I see this miracle. Jesus was walking along the streets of Jericho. His fame had spread far and wide and so he was surrounded by a crowd. Many reasons why the crowd followed Jesus. Curiosity… Hope… Desire to ‘fix’ Jesus. Many ways to tackle the crowd to get to Jesus. Remember the paralytic and the woman with the flow of blood? They chose two methods. Here is anther method chosen by Zacchaeus. He climbed the tree.
Climbing or moving up is more preferable than coming down. Medical opinions claim that it is easier on an ageing or a worn out knee to go up rather than come down a flight of steps. Zacchaeus climbed up the tree. A miracle brought him down.
Before we go into the miracle part of it, we need to know who this Zacchaeus is. He is a rich person. He is a tax collector. He is short. I see a connection between being a tax collector and being short. Really? Here is my theory.
Zacchaeus was born in the family of tax collectors. Hence, from his birth, he has been receiving only hatred and curses from the people around him. A child that grows up in such circumstances never really grows up – even physically! This was the case with Zacchaeus and he did not have the chance to grow up much. Why was he surrounded by hatred? The Jews hated the Romans. But they hated another group MORE - the group of Jews who were the betrayers of the Israelites, the sycophants of the Romans – the tax collectors. They were simply, THE SINNERS! Zacchaeus was one of them and he was curious to see Jesus. Since he was short, he climbed up the tree.
Let me come back to the miracle… Jesus was walking along the streets of Jericho. He saw Zacchaeus sitting on a tree. That was strange! A young person sitting on a tree was acceptable. Why a middle aged person? Was he mentally disturbed? He did not seem to be so. Then why? So, Jesus turned around to those who were following him and asked them: “Who is that man?” Those around Jesus looked at the person he was pointing at. “Oh, he is a…” Their list of labels and accusations came out. Jesus, as was his wont, swept aside all these irrelevant trash and insisted on knowing his name. After squeezing their collective memory for sometime, pop came the name: Zacchaeus. Jesus registered the name: ZACCHAEUS! (All caps). He went to the tree and called out: “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” The miracle!
Some one called Zacchaeus by name… by his REAL, ORIGINAL name. It was as if Zacchaeus was born again and he was ‘re-baptised’. A person who came from his own tribe that had refused to acknowledge his name and preferred to call him only by labels, called him by his sweet name.

BEING CALLED BY NAME – I am sure we can surely recollect many moments in our lives when we were called by name. Let me begin this recollection: the first time our names were pronounced, perhaps around our cradle when our parents or other relatives discussed this important issue. This was supposed to be our life-long identity… our names.
The various phases through which our names evolved, the different mutations…
The moments our names were called out in whispers – by our loved ones beginning with our Mothers…
The moments when our names were called out loud - on a public address system, to announce an award, to call our attention in an emergency, or in a crowd in a totally strange land…
I am sure we can think of a myriad different moments when we were called by name.

Zacchaeus was called by name and a miracle happened. The miracle of complete transformation. The Bible and our Christian tradition as well as many other religious traditions talk of persons getting completely transformed – making a complete turn-around. We talk about conversions… (Please don’t waste your time and energy on ‘conversions’ that are being talked about by the Indian politicians.) We do talk about our own conversions… our new year resolutions or the resolutions we take after a retreat.
The conversion, the transformation of Zacchaeus is something to reflect on. He does not proclaim: “Oh, Lord, I shall be good. I shall not harm others. I shall do good.” Simple, hollow platitudes! Compare these statements with what Zacchaeus says: "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
Half my possessions to the poor… pay back four times.
The Gospel says that “Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord” during the dinner. He did not whisper this to Jesus. A proclamation made from the rooftop, almost. When Zacchaeus stood up to speak, he was SHORT, still. But when he finished saying those lines, he really STOOD TALL. This great transformation took place since Jesus CALLED HIM BY NAME.

CANONISING ZEROS…

This is my Sunday sermon recorded yesterday – Oct, 10. (28th Sunday in Ordinary Time) I have tried to share my thoughts on riches and rich people. The very popular statement: “It is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle…” is the centre of my reflections.
Let me begin my thoughts by reflecting on the value of zero. Zero gets its value when attached to another number. Mathematicians would probably think otherwise; but I guess this is the view of an amateur. Why am I talking of zeros? Well, I was just trying to figure out how many zeros were there in 4000 crores. That is the cost of a house being built (or, probably already completed) in Mumbai. All of us know about this house, we have read a lot about this costliest house on planet earth from the internet. Its estimate is around 2 billion dollars… oops, I should have put it in caps. 2 BILLION DOLLARS! 4000 crores or 2 billion dollars… How many zeros for these numbers? Do these zeros have any meaning? This is the starting point of my reflections - zeros.
For those, who need to refresh their memories about this house, here are some web references:

http://www.rediff.com/money/2008/may/01reliance.htm
http://www.propertyinvestmentproject.co.uk/blog/most-expensive-house-in-the-world-2008/
The name of this house is ANTILLA. How very apt! Antilla is supposed to be a mythical island. This house in Mumbai is truly an island… The family living in this house has probably chosen to live on an island, separated from the rest of us.

Riches – how are they accumulated, how do they imprison us and how to be delivered from them… These are the three strands of thoughts I shall reflect on…

Accumulation of riches: Someone has become a billionaire through sheer hard work or by inheriting a fortune. Let him or her enjoy. Why talk about it? Well, if those riches were accumulated through fair means, we can surely let him or her be. But, if she or he had accumulated those riches through unfair means, especially, through exploiting poor people, then those riches also bring in lots of questions and condemnation. In this context, I am thinking of Nero making music on his fiddle or lyre or whatever it was. Well, Nero had a talent for music and he had a musical instrument with him. Why am I bothered about his music? The matter is not that simple. There are quite a few versions for this legend. Nero looked for inspiration to compose his music and he set fire to Rome in order to compose music… or he was involved in his music so much that he did not bother about Rome burning. His music and the misery of Rome were intrinsically connected. So, it is not easy to make statements like: Nero had a talent for music and he had a fiddle with him. The situation in which he made music needs some probing. The same logic need to be extended to the discussion of someone becoming rich, accumulating wealth. He worked hard and he has become rich is too simple a logic. Simplistic, I would say. Background information needs to be analysed.
When talking of accumulation of riches, my mind thinks of the list published every year by Forbes magazine. This year’s list came out on March 11, 2009. Whenever I see this list, my mind works this way. Namely, if this is the official disclosed wealth of these persons, their real worth (meaning, the assets that do not come to records) must be many more billions worth, right? Another question that creeps into my mind is: Why don’t we see political leaders in this list? Their assets will at least match these rich persons’ assets, if not more. To answer people who may have this type of thinking, wikepedia comes with an intro when they publish this list. Here is the intro by Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_billionaires_(2009)
This list of billionaires is based (where not otherwise noted) on an annual ranking of the world's wealthiest people compiled and published by Forbes magazine on March 11, 2009. The listed net worth represents the estimated value of assets less debt as of February 13, 2009. The list does not include heads of state whose wealth is tied to their position (see List of heads of state and government by net worth).
Well, even after reading this note, my mind thinks of those leaders who claim public properties as their own. Don’t we have such glaring examples in India? In other countries? These and many such thoughts crowd my mind when I think of accumulation of wealth!

Fettered by riches: Antilla in Mumbai is a good example of how riches can imprison a person. An island and a prison are images for someone spending life alone willingly or by force. I guess Antilla is one such image! In this context we can also think of the column from Francois Gautier in the Indian Express long back (It was when The New Indian Express was simply The Indian Express). Francois Gautier had reflected on the PLAGUE that swept Surat. He talks of Surat being one of the richest cities in India, since the main trade there was diamond business. The houses in Surat were palaces kept spotlessly clean with the help of domestic labourers. (That these labourers were paid unjust wages was also mentioned there). But the focus of the column was the key question: that if these houses were kept so clean, then why the plague? It was because the sense of cleanliness of these rich people stopped abruptly at the door steps of each palace. Their public sense of cleanliness was almost zero. These rich families were living in islands of luxury and opulence, while the city was becoming a cesspool. The result? Plague! The plague was a real wake up call for those rich people telling them that it was not enough just to be closed up with one’s own house and its affairs but also to be involved in the neighbourhood. Antilla in Mumbai, as some journalists have reported stands TOO MUCH APART from the rest of the neighbourhood around it, almost like an eyesore. Talk of living in islands, prisons and PALACES!

Deliver us from riches: How do we get out of such prisons? Today’s Gospel seems to give us an answer - (Mark 10: 17-30), especially verse 21:
And Jesus, looking upon him loved him, and said to him: You lack one thing; go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
The following verse 22 also needs some attention.
At that saying, his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for HE HAD GREAT POSSESSIONS.
Jesus must have admired this rich man, since he had been following all the commandments from his youth. Hence, he proposed the next step – go sell all that you have and give it to the poor. Following the ten commandments may help us in deliverance, but there are greater ways. The step proposed by Jesus was too much for the rich man. He went away sad. The admiration of Jesus for this man, turned into pity and he makes the famous saying: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
Being rich calls for a greater challenge to enter God’s kingdom. This must have come as a rude shock to the disciples. The Gospel says so. The disciples thought that the rich would EASILY enter God’s kingdom, in fact they had made advanced booking there. And Jesus says: “Excuse me, it is not so. They will have to really struggle very hard.”
We have heard of wealthy people entering God’s kingdom. Among catholic saints, there are quite a few kings, queens and people from very rich families. I would like to cite some news bits from the lives of the world’s two richest billionaires: Bill Gates and Warren Buffet:
Until 2008, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has spent 28 billion dollars for different social causes.
When Bill Gates stepped down from his position in Microsoft last year, he had made a statement that he would bequeath all his assets (worth around 58 billion dollars) to charities and will not leave his wealth to his children.
Warren Buffet has made the single largest contribution by an individual in human history so far when he contributed 37 billion dollars to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2006.
Dear friends, please don’t think that this is an attempt to canonise Bill and Melinda Gates as well as Warren Buffet. (By the way, today in Rome five blesseds are getting canonised. The famous Damian who worked among the lepers is one of them.)
But, I am sure you will agree that these two billionaires have taken some efforts to deliver themselves and thousands of unfortunate people in the world. I remember Bill Gates making some remarks during one of his talks that raising the standard of poor people around the world is not simply a matter of charity but business sense.
Here are some statements from Warren Buffet as reported by Hobson:
Buffett once told Fortune magazine: 'A very rich person would leave his kids enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing,' Hobson said.
Buffet says he and his wife talked about it and decided they shouldn't pass huge amounts of money along to their children. They believe their kids were born with the advantages of wealth, and grew up with great opportunities because of that. He says they had a gigantic head start, and that dynastic megawealth would further tilt the playing field in America, when we should be trying to make it more level.
I don’t want to load you with web references on these two billionaires here. But, if you insist… Here are two of them.

http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/home.aspx
Let us come back to zero with which I began my reflections. 28, 58, 37 billions… how many zeros do they have? I don’t think it is a big task to find this out. But, these zeros have become more valuable since they have been channelized from the very rich to the very poor people. These zeros have been canonised!

Go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.

Let these words of Jesus ring in our ears… and lead us to some action!

பெயர் பிரான்ஸ்வா குத்தியேர் (francois gautier the ‘Ferengi’s column” in the Indian Express ) பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால், சூரத் என்ற நகரில் கொள்ளை நோய் பரவியதை மையமாகக் கொண்டு அவர் எழுதிய ஒரு கட்டுரையில் அவர் செல்வந்தர்களைப் பற்றி கூறியதை இங்கு நினைவுபடுத்த விரும்புகிறேன்.
