We’ve all… Got Talent

The Parable of the Talents

‘Classifieds’ are a special type of advertising that dominate our newspapers especially on week-ends. 20 years back there was a classified ad in one of the U.S. newspapers which read like this: "If you are lonely or have a problem, call me. I am in a wheelchair and seldom get out. We can share our problems with each other. Just call. I'd love to talk." The author of this ad was Nancy. Tony Campolo talks of Nancy in his book: ‘Wake Up America –Answering God’s Radical Call While Living in the Real World’. Here is a write-up on Nancy and her ministry:
Her name is Nancy and she lives in Philadelphia. She is crippled and confined to a wheelchair, yet she has developed a unique ministry to hurting and lonely people. She runs ads in the personal section of the newspaper that read: If you are lonely or have a problem, call me… The results: each week at least thirty calls come in. She spends her days comforting and counselling people — and has become someone upon whom literally hundreds of people have leaned.
When Tony Campolo asked her how she became crippled, she told him, “By trying to commit suicide.” She went on: “I was living alone, had no friends, hated my job and was constantly depressed. I decided to jump from the window of my apartment. Instead of being killed, I was paralyzed from the waist down. The second night I was in the hospital, Jesus appeared to me and told me that I had a healthy body and a crippled soul, but from then on I’d have a crippled body and a healthy soul. I gave my life to Christ right there and then. When I got out of the hospital, I tried to think of how a woman like me in a wheelchair could do some good, and I came up with the idea of putting the ad in the newspaper. And the rest, as they say, is all history.”

Many persons who, although wheel-chair-bound, are a source of inspiration to thousands of people in the world. For these persons the wheel chair is not a hurdle or a ‘handicap’ but a nursery that gives birth to hope in the hearts of people. Each one of us is created with our gifts of strengths and weaknesses. Weakness… a gift? I dare say yes. For Nancy, her weakness was a gift, she was willing to share with others. If our perspective changes, then our weakness also will change.
Today’s gospel invites us to take stock of our strengths and weaknesses – God-given talents – so that we can give a proper account of our lives. Taking stock and submitting accounts are some of the usual exercises we undertake when we come to the end of a year. We are approaching the end of another Litrugical year and hence we are given a chance to reflect on ‘submitting an account’ of our talents – the parable of the Talents.

This parable is found in Matthew’s Gospel (25: 14-30) as well as in Luke’s Gospel (19:11-27). When we compare these two versions, we get an insight into what we consider as ‘talents’. Matthew’s gospel talks of unequal distribution of talents – five, two and one – ‘to each according to his ability.’ (Mt. 25:15) while Luke’s gospel talks of equal distribution: Ten persons entrusted with ten pounds. (Lk. 19:13). Luke’s version seems to give us a picture of an ideal world where everyone gets equal share and opportunity. Matthew’s version gives us a picture of the real world. We know that in the real world, talents are not equally distributed to everyone. Even among siblings in a family one seems loaded with talents while another seems to lack talents as well as opportunities.

This point of view emerges from our identifying ‘talent’ as what can be ‘shown’ to others. Most of us are aware of the famous TV show – ‘Got Talent’. This reality show which, probably, began as ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, has now spread over 66 countries. The ‘talent’ spoken of here is that which can be ‘exhibited’ in front of others – in terms of art, sports etc. Unfortunately, the ‘talents’ promoted by the commercial world, bring in competition and all the complexes associated with competition – like dejection, discouragement and self-pity! We are also sadly aware of some of these ‘talent’ shows where children are involved. These children go through hell and some of them end up as drug-addicts!

Most of us identify ‘talents’ with intelligence, artistry or excellence in some form that can be seen. We don’t think seriously about talents that are present in every one of us… talents that do not show off; but come to our aid when required – talents to love, to share, to care, to counsel etc. From this perspective, we feel that Luke would be closer to truth – namely, that all of us are given varied talents and in good measure.
We know the famous story of the boatman and the scholar crossing the river. The scholar was trying to prove to the boatman that he had lost much of his life by not learning great literary pieces or the scriptures. The boatman kept quiet. In midstream, the boat developed a leak and began to sink. The boatman asked the scholar whether he knew swimming and the scholar said ‘No’. Then the boatman said that the scholar had lost his whole life; jumped into the river and swam away. My own gut feeling is that the boatman would have dragged the scholar along to the other shore with him.

Talents are very many and varied. Our idea of talents is pretty narrow. Unfortunately, due to this wrong understanding of ‘talents’, we bury our own unique talents; keep brooding over what we don’t have and waste our time. When the time comes for us to submit an account of our talents, out account statement would be a long a list of excuses.  We see this pattern when we analyse how the three persons in the parable present their account.
The first two persons who were able to multiply the talents given to them, came forward and talked about the talents given to them and what they were able to achieve. The third person, however, did not talk about the talent. He talked about the one who gave the talent to him. He blamed the Master as the reason for his own inactivity: “Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.” (Mt. 25:24-25) It would be helpful if we can examine ourselves and see how much of this person’s attitude has rubbed onto us. How much of our life has been wasted in ‘blame game’?

The judgement given by the master in this parable is very harsh and seems out of proportion. Part of the master’s statement is very challenging, especially in the context of the world where the divide between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ is appalling. The challenging statement goes like this: “Take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has, will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” (Mt.25:28-29) From the standpoint of social justice, this statement must be completely reversed. ‘Take a few talents from the one who has ten, and give them to this man who has only one.’ We must understand that Jesus is not giving us a lesson on social justice in this parable. His point is that each of us is accountable to what is entrusted to us… no excuses!

Herman Cain, former CEO and president of Godfather's Pizza, a candidate for the 2012 U.S. Republican Party presidential nomination, was raised in poverty. He credits his hard-working father for his success in life. In addition to his father, Herman Cain also found inspiration from Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, a former president of Morehouse College. Dr. Mays taught Herman a poem that has guided him through the ups and downs of life. It is as follows:
"Life is just a minute; only sixty seconds in it,
Forced upon you, can't refuse it. Didn't seek it, didn't choose it,
But it's up to you to use it. You must suffer if you lose it,
Give an account if you abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute; but eternity is in it."

The Parable of the Talents teaches us clearly that we will be held accountable for our “stewardship” of our lives, especially of our time. May the parable of the talents teach us how to look at varied ‘talents’ that are within and around us. May we have the creative courage and generosity to put to use all the god-given talents and opportunities and thus multiply happiness in the world.

The Mother of all Christian Churches on earth

St John Lateran Basilica and Palace - Wikipedia

As we grow older, we wish to get into the time machine and fly back-to-the-past. If possible, we take an actual trip to visit our childhood home, our first school etc. This desire is all the more intense if we have left these places and gone to another country. Living through our first birthday, the first day in school, the first swim in a pond, the first picnic with the family… is precious and at times sacred. Our first conscious visit to the Church may rank high in this list of ‘firsts’.

Today, the Catholic Church celebrates her first visit to a church. It took more than 300 years for this ‘first’ to happen. Christianity, as a new born child, received a cold welcome, rather, a ‘cold-blooded welcome’ into this world. After the cruel death of Jesus on Calvary, the Jews and the Romans began hunting the disciples and other followers of Christ. Roman emperors Nero, Domitian, Trajan, Hadrian, Valerian, Diocletian and others unleashed waves of violence against the Christians. Hence, Christians had to lead a hidden life. Their worship was done in secret, in underground caves.

When Constantine became the Roman Emperor in 306 A.D., things changed. By the persuasion of his saintly mother, Helena, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313, giving religious freedom for Christians within the Roman Empire. As a result of this, Christians built their first Church. It was built on the property given to the Church by Emperor Constantine. On November 9, 324 A.D., Pope St. Sylvester consecrated the first public Christian church erected in the ancient City of Rome, with the name - “The Church of the Most Holy Saviour.” Centuries later, this Church was re-dedicated, to include the names of St John, the Baptist and St John, the Evangelist. At present the Basilica bears the Latin inscription : Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sanctorum Iohannes Baptista et Evangelista in Laterano, which translates in English as Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour and Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist at the Lateran.

When we celebrate the Feast of the Dedication of St John Lateran Basilica, we are celebrating not only the material edifice of the Basilica, but also the spiritual edifice, namely, the Christian Community built around the name of Christ. This Basilica, which is the first fruit of the religious freedom given to Christians, also invites us to celebrate this day as the victory of religious freedom. But, our present situation is far from a celebratory mood. Religious freedom is chained in many countries. Among all the religious groups suffering discrimination and persecution, Christians are more in number than any other group. It seems, as it were, the first three centuries of Christianity is being re-enacted without the Colosseum and hungry lions tearing Christians to pieces.

On November 4, a news item from Zenit ran a headline like this: New Global Religious Freedom Report Shows 116 of 196 Nations Curtail Liberty. It goes on to say: The survey - conducted by journalists and scholars (of Aid to the Church in Need) and covering the years 2012-2014 - shows that in 116 of the world’s 196 nations, freedom of worship is obstructed to one degree or another, ranging from mild harassment and discrimination to outright persecution and violence. The Report classifies 20 countries as manifesting a “high” degree of religious intolerance or active persecution.
The report also documents “aggressive atheism” alongside a rise in anti-Semitism in Western Europe, as well as “religious illiteracy” on the part of Western policy-makers that gravely complicates the conduct of foreign policy. (Zenit, November 4)
On the same day there were other Christian news agencies like Fides and AsiaNews which carried headlines to confirm that religious freedom is becoming a distant dream.
  • Bishop of Islamabad: Couple burned alive, barbaric act shrouded by a guilty silence (AsiaNews)
  • PAKISTAN - Married couple burned alive: Christians protest in Lahore, calling for the UN to intervene (Fides)
  • Iraqi Prime Minister Tells Patriarch He'll Do More for Christians (Zenit)
  • INDIA - The Bishops: "With silence, the government becomes an accomplice in the attacks on minorities" (Fides)
Historically, November 9, the Day when the Christian family consecrated its first Church, two other events drew my attention. Two historical events that are poles apart, demonstrate that human beings are capable of the depths of insanity and the heights of sanctity. On November 9, 1938, the holocaust of the Jewish race began in Germany. On November 9, 1989, the Wall of Berlin was brought down and Germany was reunited. This year Germany is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of this unification. As human beings, with the basic thirst for peace, we can surely take part in this celebration!

The Readings for the Feast of the Dedication of St John Lateran Basilica, focus on the theme of ‘the temple’. Prophet Ezekiel paints a picture of hope to the people enslaved in Babylon, that they will be able to go back to worship in the temple and the water proceeding from the temple is life-giving and productive. This assurance of the Prophet must have enkindled the hope of freedom in the hearts of the slaves.
While reflecting on the hope of the Israelites, I was drawn to a particular passage from the Encyclical ‘Lumen Fidei’ (The Light of Faith) of Pope Francis (and Pope Benedict) where he portrays beautifully and practically what Christian faith means:
Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey. To those who suffer, God does not provide arguments which explain everything; rather, his response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every story of suffering and opens up a ray of light. (Lumen Fidei, No. 57)

The Gospel passage given for this Feast of the Dedication seems to be out of place. Why talk of the cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple on the day of Dedication of the Basilica? Our simple faith tells us that we need to go to the church or the temple to cleanse ourselves. But, here, Jesus cleanses the temple. This brings to our attention that even the holiest of places can become a market place (John 2:16) due to the uncontrollable avarice of human beings.

Jesus’ encounter with the Temple began when He was 12 years old. Even at that time, the Boy Jesus must have seen some anomalies in His Father’s House. Every year as He went to the Temple for His annual obligations, He must have come back with lots of questions… painful questions. This year He wanted to find an answer to His questions… Rather, He decided to become an answer to His questions.
Jesus identified himself with the poor who had agonising questions about God, who was locked up inside the Temple of Jerusalem by the selfish Priests and merchants. He sought a solution. He began cleansing the Temple. Some commentators would call this act of Jesus a miracle. How did He undertake such a daring act and still not get killed on the spot is a miracle indeed! What made Him do this? The Gospel says: "Zeal for the House of God consumed Him."

The temple authorities could see this zeal and they had no answer to this. Still, putting up a brave front, they questioned Jesus: "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" Jesus did not answer them directly but threw a challenge at them: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." A temple that took 46 years to be built can be built in three days? What a childish way of speaking!
Jesus spoke of a different temple – His own Body! The Body of Jesus, which was destroyed on the Cross, was built up anew in three days. In this temple there would be no more problems of meeting God; in this temple God cannot be bought; there will be no inner and outer courts in this temple to segregate people… All are welcome to meet God here!

The head-on collision Jesus had with Jerusalem Temple leaves us with some pertinent questions:
If Jesus were to visit our churches, especially some ‘important’ (meaning ‘lucrative’) shrines, will he take up the whip again?
Are our visits to churches and shrines tied up with some business negotiations? Is our relationship to God, an indirect, give-and-take contract? Why do most of us stop going to church, when there seems to be ‘no gain’ going there?

The Cleansing of the Temple

Aid to the Church in Need

(Pope Francis - Lumen Fidei, No. 57)

Dying and Living Meaningfully

Life Beyond the Grave

Last Saturday, October 25, Reyhaneh Jabbari, a young (26 years old) Iranian woman was hanged. She was executed in Iran's Evin Prison, for the 2009 murder of an intelligence officer with a penknife, when he, according to her, tried to rape her. Reyhaneh was in prison for the past 7 years. Many countries and human-rights organisations tried in vain to release her, claiming that the court proceedings were flawed. Iran went ahead with the execution.
In a heartbreaking voice message to her mother Sholeh, Reyhaneh narrates how she faced death for the crime of defending herself against a man who tried to rape her. She also tells Sholeh to donate her organs after her death. This voice message, which has been translated by National Council of Resistance of Iran, has reached the media far and wide.
When I read the transcript of Reyhaneh’s message, my heart ached. I was deeply touched by the words of Reyhaneh pleading with her mother to beg the court permission to donate her organs after death and to do it without seeking any publicity. Here are the words of Reyhaneh to her mother:
However, before my death I want something from you, that you have to provide for me with all your might and in any way that you can. In fact this is the only thing I want from this world, this country and you. I know you need time for this. Therefore, I am telling you part of my will sooner. Please don't cry and listen. I want you to go to the court and tell them my request. I cannot write such a letter from inside the prison that would be approved by the head of prison; so once again you have to suffer because of me. It is the only thing that if even you beg for it I would not become upset although I have told you many times not to beg to save me from being executed.
My kind mother, dear Sholeh, the one more dear to me than my life, I don't want to rot under the soil. I don't want my eye or my young heart to turn into dust. Beg so that it is arranged that as soon as I am hanged my heart, kidney, eye, bones and anything that can be transplanted be taken away from my body and given to someone who needs them as a gift. I don't want the recipient know my name, buy me a bouquet, or even pray for me. I am telling you from the bottom of my heart that I don't want to have a grave, for you to come and mourn there and suffer. I don't want you to wear black clothing for me. Do your best to forget my difficult days. Give me to the wind to take away.

These words of Reyhaneh gave me a unique perspective on death and dying. This Sunday, (November 2) the Church invites us to commemorate the Dear Departed. Hence this message of Reyhaneh seems more appropriate to reflect on. In recent years the world has awakened to the beauty of organ donation. In the recent months I have read many instances from Tamil Nadu, where the organs of accident victims were generously donated by the family members. This is a very meaningful way of proclaiming to the world that one’s life does not end with the grave. On a special day of remembering the Dear Departed, we thank God for awakening in the hearts of men and women the generosity of organ donation.

The other segment from Reyhaneh’s message that affected me deeply was her trust that God will set things right in the heavenly court. Here are the words spoken by Reyhaneh to her mother:
The world did not love us. It did not want my fate. And now I am giving in to it and embrace the death. Because in the court of God I will charge the inspectors, I will charge inspector Shamlou, I will charge judge, and the judges of country's Supreme Court that beat me up when I was awake and did not refrain from harassing me. In the court of the creator I will charge Dr. Farvandi, I will charge Qassem Shabani and all those that out of ignorance or with their lies wronged me and trampled on my rights and didn't pay heed to the fact that sometimes what appears as reality is different from it. Dear soft-hearted Sholeh, in the other world it is you and me who are the accusers and others who are the accused. Let's see what God wants.

When the war in Syria was at its peak, many innocent children were killed. A graphic photo of one of those children – a 3 year old boy – bleeding and dying on a hospital bed, was flashed in the media with the headline: The last thing a 3 year old Syrian said before he died: “I’m gonna tell God everything” Whether this was a true incident or not, no one is sure. But one can surely believe that out of the mouths of babes God can teach us very harsh truths about this life and the life after.

All true religions of the world teach us that the life on earth is not an end in itself; it is rather a journey that has a special destination on the other side of the grave. “Christian death is like putting out the candle, since daylight has come” is one of my favourite quotes on death. The same idea is expressed in the Preface for the Mass for the Dead:
Indeed for your faithful Lord, life is changed, not ended;
and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust,
an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.

This day of the commemoration of the dead, serves as a reminder that all of us are pilgrims here on earth. If only we can understand this concept and believe this fact, we can solve so many problems in our personal life as well as in the international arena. Unfortunately, most of us tend to believe that our life here is permanent. The cost we pay to secure this permanency brings along with it, most of the problems we face in life. When I say ‘cost’ I am not talking of the money factor, only.
Many of us may be aware of the process of ‘cryonics’. Alcor Life Extension Foundation says: “The object of cryonics is to prevent death by preserving sufficient cell structure and chemistry so that recovery (including recovery of memory and personality) remains possible by foreseeable technology.” We can see that science is interested in prolonging human life beyond the natural process called death.

The extreme example of deluding ourselves that life on earth is permanent, would be the lifestyle of some of the richest persons on earth. I am thinking specially about the billion dollar house (Antilia) built in Mumbai by one of these richest persons. If only those who live in this house, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only those who have stacked up money in Swiss banks, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only those who have ravaged nature for their own personal benefits, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
If only our leaders who play a double game, misleading people all the time, truly and sincerely believed that they were all pilgrims on earth…
All of us know that this litany could go on. We should include ourselves in this litany. If only all of us truly and sincerely believe that we are all pilgrims on earth… many problems can be and will be solved and we can live in peace and, at the end, truly RIP (rest in peace)!

We cannot wish death away. We can make it more meaningful by making our life more meaningful. As we celebrate the memory of our Dear Departed, let me close with the thoughts and words attributed to Henry Van Dyke, on death. This was a fresh perspective on death for me. I do hope it also gives you a new perspective on death:
Gone From My Sight
by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

Iran’s hanging of Reyhaneh Jabbari condemned

Christian death is like putting out the candle, since daylight has come.
